travel crush is official underway. >> just coming into the airport, it took us half an hour to just get through. >> reporter: with the holiday now just three days away, americans are packing up and heading out in record numbers. >> these will likely be some of the busiest travel days in u.s. history. >> reporter: aaa estimates some 80 million people will travel this holiday week, with 90% of them expected to drive to their thanksgiving destinations. >> we do recommend tuesday and wednesday, try to leave early in the morning. the afternoon hours on tuesday and wednesday are the worst. >> reporter: many grateful for cheaper gas prices, down from a summer high. prices falling below $3 a gallon in more than half of the states nationwide. and at america's airports, the tsa expecting to screen a record number of travelers. the faa is also dealing with another problem. warning some airports will see slowdowns from shortages of air traffic controllers. and adding to potential headaches for those flying in or

out of charlotte, airport service workers there announcing overnight they are set to strike today to protest low wages. for all of those looking forward to spending time around the holiday table with family and friends, mother nature may have other plans. >> make sure you check the weather, because i had no clue it was going to take 12 hours to get to atlanta. >> more than 17,000 flights have been canceled or delayed since friday, as snow and rain hammered the west. and more bad weather is on the way this week. with two storms expected to bring as much as 5 inches of snow to the midwest and rain and cold weather expected along the east coast. >> just be patient, enjoy the moment, you'll get to your destination safely. >> reporter: and officials are reminding travelers to know what you can and perhaps more importantly cannot bring through security. a good rule of thumb, if you can spread it, spill it, pump it, or pour it, it is not a solid and you cannot bring it in your carry-on. try saying that five times fast, guys. >> we're going over it.

spread it, spill it, pump it, or pour it. we got it. >> sounds like a saturday night. >> mr. roker's tracking everything we need to know, whether people are driving or flying. >> i'm telling you, it's going to be an interesting one. we start off the week with a couple of storms. one over the midwest. the other out over the pacific northwest. the one brings early week rainfall. a quick hit, not a big deal. a quick shot of rain, maybe some upper midwest snow. this is going to be a coast-to-coast storm that's going to bring a california flood threat, snow for the sierra and the rockies a thanksgiving day mess. depending on the model, this is what we'll be looking at. the pacific storm moves onshore today, into tomorrow. significant snow across the rockies. now, this new storm center will transfer its energy, spin up over texas. the american model brings it across wednesday and thursday. it stays to the south. the heaviest rain over the southeast. it exits the mid-atlantic. however, the european model brings it a little further to the north.

that means a track closer to the northeast. that means widespread rain, gusty winds, and snow, especially wednesday into thursday, including on thanksgiving day. wednesday, travel, evening downpours in the midsection of the country, colorado snow, texas warmth, airport delays possible. minneapolis, chicago, detroit, st. louis, definitely denver. san francisco and los angeles, as far as the roads, midwest rain pick up in the evening for i-64, the rockies, i-70. i-25 will be a mess. thanksgiving day, bitterly cold, a mess along the eastern seaboard, the way it looks right now, east coast storm, i-90, i-70, i-85, i-20, a mess southeast all the way up into new england. rest of it looks pretty good. guys, right now, it's still a little up in the air. >> i don't love that parade forecast you just gave. >> it's not looking great. >> you might want to think about changing your wardrobe, you'll be outside, all of our friends will be outside for that parade.

picks, including pete hegseth and tulsi gabbard, both expected to face tough questions. gabbard, accused of amplifying russian propaganda. >> i think she's compromised. russian-controlled media called her a russian asset. >> i think it's really interesting that anybody that has a different political view now is being cast as a russian asset. i think it's insulting. it's a slur, quite frankly. >> reporter: she's also facing questions over her secret meeting with the syrian president in 2017. >> she met with bashir al asad. we'll want to know what the purpose was. >> reporter: gabbard has rejected accusations she is a mouthpiece for the syrian regime. pete hegseth expected to be questions over a police report detailing a woman's sexual assault allegation, which he denies. >> i was completely cleared. >> reporter: investigators say he was not charged, but paid his accuser a settlement for 2023. hegseth also in the spotlight for saying that women should not

have combat roles. >> we would have an ineffective combat roll. >> the policy is set by the president of the united states, not by the cabinet members. i think pete hegseth will follow the lead of the commander in chief. >> reporter: these latest revelations prompting questions about vetting from mr. trump's cabinet picks, and potentially skipping the traditional fbi background checks. >> why wouldn't we get these background checks for the most important jobs in the united states government. >> i don't think the american public cares who does the background checks. what the american public cares about is to see the mandate they voted him in delivered upon. >> so hallie, the focus really in terms of confirmation focuses is pete hegseth, tulsi gabbard, obviously since gaetz dropped out. what is this coming down to? what are you reading in the tea leaves? >> a lot is going to depend on how the candidates for these jobs answer questions from senators, in particular these very small handful of senate republicans who may be willing to push back against

president-elect trump. we talk a lot about his firm grip on the gop, and it is firm, but you mentioned the withdrawal of matt gaetz as ag pick last week. that is an example that some senators, at least a degree, are willing to flex some co-equal branch muscle, if you will. also keep an eye on robert f. kennedy jr., he's been nominated to lead the nation's health agencies. he has acknowledged in his words many skeletons in his closet. we mentioned the focus on pete hegseth who has already held some meeting with senate republicans, and as for tulsi gabbard, she is expected to head to the hill here in washington and meet with folks after the thanksgiving break. something else to watch coming up pretty soon, savannah. >> hallie, thank you. also this morning, the war between russia and ukraine is intensifying with new attacks and new concerns over the weapons now being used by both sides. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel joins us now from kyiv. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. russia fired missiles at the

city of kharkiv, and more than 145 drones at cities all across this country. ukraine launching attacks inside russia, too. and all of this just in the last 24 hours. with more attacks overnight in ukraine and in russia, this war is escalating rapidly. but is this all a race to the finish. ukrainian intelligence are now examining the wreckage of a new type of high-speed nuclear-capable missile that vladimir putin launched last week. ukrainian officials confirm it flew 11 times the speed of sound, too fast for ukraine to shoot down. putin called the launch a test and a response after president biden authorized ukraine to fire american weapons deeper into russia for the first time. putin, zelenskyy, and biden are all escalating, it seems, to secure stronger positions before president-elect trump takes office. >> if i'm president, i will have

that war settled in one day. 24 hours. >> reporter: this weekend, trump's pick for national security adviser mike waltz signaled a new policy is coming. >> we need to bring this to a responsible end, we need to restore deterrence, restore peace. >> reporter: many ukrainians also want the war to stop, but they do not believe that putin would ever honor a deal. we joined a group of soldier who call themselves the witches of bucha, now taking up arms. in a force outside kyiv, they're training in close combat, fully expecting one day russian troops will make another push for kyiv. >> 90% of this unit are women. many of their sons and husbands are out fighting on the front lines, so they have stepped up, volunteering to defend the capital. >> reporter: valentina, the soldiers only release their first names, is a grandmother. her son and son-in-law are on the front lines. >> president-elect trump says that he's going to wrap up this war in a day.

we've been talking about e. coli for a few weeks, a few months. baby carrots, quarter pounders. what's the latest on the e. coli outbreak. >> some important outbreaks. we'll start with the carrot producers at the center of that. at grimmway farms, it says all carrots on store shelves are safe and the affected products are no longer for sale. that outbreak, that was a lot of popular brands like 365, good and gather, whole foods, trader joe's, a whole bunch of names, but they're not on shelves anymore, the company tells us. now that recall of 167,000 pounds of ground beef, that minnesota health officials linked to more than a dozen illnesses. michigan-based wolverine packing company says it has notified all of its customers about that recall. all of that meat was sent to restaurants. you didn't buy this in a grocery store. this was at restaurants, and they say that recall is ongoing. finally, this multi-state listeria outbreak, a baby died, multiple people hospitalized. these are ready-to-eat meat products.

the company telling nbc news it is implementing better food safety standards and that recall remains active. we learned about that late friday night. i'll continue to follow that one for you. >> is this unusual that we've had kind of this raft of food-borne illnesses? or are we just hearing about it more? >> we're hearing about it more. and i've talked to a lot of food safety experts who have said there are 48 million cases of food-borne illness every single year. people go to the hospital every single day with food-borne illness. a couple of things that you can do. because you can't keep the manufacturing process clean, but ground beef, for example, ground meat, it must be cooked to 160 degrees or higher. ground poultry, even more. fish and shellfish, maybe 145 degrees. and these experts tell me that produce is really hard, because you can't wash e. coli off produce. you can make improvement, but it's still -- when in doubt, throw it out on the produce side. >> real quick, what's happening with the egg prices. they're soaring? >> they're up 30%. if you're shopping for thanksgiving this week, you've seen the egg prices are up. there's avian flu.

so these producers have had to cull their herds or their flocks, rather, because they're trying to keep avian flu from spreading to others. so less supply and more demand. it is thanksgiving week. people are going to be out there buying eggs no matter what. and prices are up about 30%. i've been looking at other prices. most everything else is going down. the turkey will be less, a lot of the trimmings will be less. we talked last week that the farm bureau said you'll pay less than six bucks a person for dinner this week. that's good news. and the 2 liter, i've been talking about, 2 liter sodas are down about 14%. if you're feeding a big crowd, lean into the 2 liters. >> that's great news for christine romans and those three boys. >> they like the soda. >> very hungry, thirsty boys. the 2 liter is cheaper this year. to the nfl now. eagles fans waking up with big smiles on their faces this morning. philadelphia picking up their servant straight wins last night, taking on the l.a. rams

conejero saab in palo alto. this latest storm comes as many people in the bay area are recovering from last week's storm. people in the peninsula and in the south bay are bracing themselves after seeing the amount of rain that was dumped in the north bay. the russian river surged just below moderate flood stage this weekend. also over the weekend, authorities confirm a fatality in sonoma county after a car was spotted in a flooded roadway saturday morning. first responders recovered a body of a man that was pronounced dead at the scene. let's get a look now at the forecast with meteorologist kari hall. and we are still tracking some rain at times it has been quite heavy. and as we take a look at storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar, and what to expect heavy rain, at least for the next few hours, and then tapering off later on, but some lingering spotty showers in the forecast through tomorrow morning and time for thanksgiving. we are going to see it drying out, but there will be a lot of fog during our mornings. after all of this, heavy rain starts to move out of

hearing. they're fighting to be re-sentenced and then released. >> nbc's liz kreutz is at the courthouse in l.a. hey, liz, good morning. >> hey, guys, good morning. this status hearing is happening in the same courthouse here where eric and lyle were sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, 28 years ago for murdering their parents. their attorney says they're expected to appear virtually in court via zoom from san diego. while it is the same venue, it is a new judge and the brothers hope a new era of criminal justice. >> reporter: nearly three decades after the menendez brother were convicted of killing their parents, jose and kitty, for the first time in years, erik and lyle will be back in front of a judge, joining virtually in court today as they make their case for sentencing and release. >> no one believes us. >> interest in the brothers' story skyrocketing after the release of multiple series and documentaries about the murders.

erik and lyle's attorneys say new evidence proves their claims they acted in self-defense after years of sexual abuse by that you are father. something they testified about during their trial in 1993. >> did you cry? >> yes. >> were you scared? >> very. >> reporter: but to this day, the original prosecutor telling "dateline" their alleged abuse doesn't justify murder. >> the law doesn't allow them to kill their father, even if he was a child abuser. and it certainly does allow them to kill their mother. >> reporter: the outgoing d.a. says that erik and lyle are rehabilitated men, citing their volunteer work in prison and their personal lives as husbands, although last week, lyle's wife of 20 years announced that they have been separated and shut down rumors of an affair on facebook writing, this is not a cheating scandal and that she is forever committed to the enduring fight for their freedom. while erik's stepdaughter posting that the brothers are two separate individuals, and that she would appreciate it if people would consider my dad for who he is and not based on the actions of someone else.

>> how much do you think these stories about who they are behind bars, their personal lives. >> the one way that could matter for the court is when it comes down to erik and lyle's credibility. >> is it possible that one of the brothers could get a resentence, not the other? >> it is possible. >> an attorney for the menendez brothers has acknowledged that possibility. today's procedural hearing will set the stage for the brothers' key hearing next month, scheduled nine days after los angeles' incoming district attorney takes office and begins reviewing whether to recommend resentencing. >> you need to do that extensive review of the facts and the law. menendezes get no special treatment. they will get equal treatment. >> reporter: now, california governor newsom has recently said he's going to hold off on making his clemency decision until after that new d.a. makes his recommendation. as for today, any true crime fans hoping to be inside, get a glimpse at the brothers as they appear virtually, they may have a tough time, guys. there's no cameras allowed in court, as of now. and there are only 16 seats open to the public, which they are

giving out via lottery. guys? hoda. >> liz kreutz for us there in l.a. thanks. >> let's get more insight on what we expect today. nbc's senior legal correspondent laura jarrett is here. so what do you expect you could actually learn from today's hearing as a status hearing? >> today you're going to sort of get the first preview and how this new judge is treating the case and treating the evidence. he knows just like all of us do that there is a new district attorney in town. and he's not getting sworn in until december 2nd. and yet this hearing on resentencing is happening on the 11th. if i'm the judge, i say, wait a minute, guys. we know there's a new administration coming. what is the district attorney's position about whether that should move forward or not. there are plenty of career prosecutors in this case who don't have anything to do with the new administration. but still, that judge could decide to push off the hearing and give them a chance to weigh in. and we know he wants -- the district attorney wants to do his own assessment of the evidence, as we just heard. >> so three different tracks, potentially, towards freedom for the brothers here. is there one particular track that seems to be shaping up best?

system bringing a flood threat. thanksgiving day mesas well. this comes on in tomorrow, into today. then it transfers its energy from that system to this one in texas. american model brings it across the mid-atlantic. so it's not quite so bad. the heaviest rain southeast. the european model, however, though, brings it further to the north. and that means widespread rain, gusty winds and snow, a real mess in the stronger storms. so we'll have to wait and see which one is the actual outcome that we see. now, we are looking thanksgiving day, up and down the east coast, a mess. sunny in the southwest, bitterly cold in the plains. here's what we look for, as far as the roads from boston, i-90, i-95, i-85, and i-20 all going to be looking at gusty winds, rain, some sections looking at some snow. for today, though, no travel problems except for maybe a few snow showers in the plains and wet weather along the west coast. but we'll continue to really track this see and if those models can come into an agreement.

>> reporter: about 70% of the u.s. population does have access to fluoridated water. the cdc, the american dental association, the american academy of pediatrics and the vast majority of dentists in america all support it, citing that it reduces tooth decay by 25%. the american dental association saying that it unreservedly endorsed the fluoridation of community water supplies as safe, effective, and necessary in preventing tooth decay. but robert f. kennedy jr. tapped by president-elect trump to lead the health and human services department wrote on "x" that the trump white house will advise all u.s. water systems to remove fluoride from public water. >> i think the faster that it goes out, the better. >> reporter: legislators in arkansas filed a bill against fluoride last week. but in buffalo, new york, a different story. nine years, the city stopped adding fluoride to drinking water and recently brought it back after public pressure and a lawsuit by parents seeking

damages from their children's dental surgeries. >> there's many stories of young children who have, you know, ended up needing immediate emergency dental surgery. >> reporter: still, some like dr. bruce lamphere argue that the use of fluoride should be re-examined. >> it's really critical that we need to pause and reassess all of this evidence and make sure that we're adequately protecting children. >> a study in october shows because so many have started using toothpaste and mouth wash with added fluoride in recent decades, maybe it's not as necessary to add fluoride to drinking water. that's one of the things that the florida surgeon general points out as well. one group advocating against fluoride say that more than 175 communities across the u.s. have rejected fluoride, but the cdc and many agencies continue to support adding fluoride to water. the cdc calling that policy change one of the ten great public health interventions, guys, of the 20th century. >> oh, wow. >> the buffalo example is

we're back with our annual series, thanks and giving, focused on the life-saving work at st. jude research children's hospital. >> sharing the inspiring stories of patients is a tradition we've loved for more than two decades at the "today" show. nbc's morgan radford is here this morning, and you met a young cancer survivor and rising country musician who got a boost from a mega star. >> her name is addie pratt, diagnosed with cancer at a young age, she came to st. jude and

with the help of brad paisley, she's using her story and her voice to inspire a whole new generation of people in their fight against cancer. ♪ the woman that i am ♪ >> reporter: for as long as she could remember, addie pratt has loved to sing. her first official gig at age 3, when she walked on stage at a local barbecue restaurant in her hometown of kansas city, kansas. >> i just marched up there, asked if i could sing and performed "you are my sunshine." >> reporter: a sense of fearlessness she would need to rely upon 11 years later when her health took a turn. >> i just had a sore throat and i was super tired. and one day, i couldn't even get my head off of the pillow. and went back to the doctor and ended up at st. jude that night. >> reporter: at 14 years old, she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, or aml, a rare form of cancer that at one time only had a survival rate of 30%.

>> it was hard, physically, but all of the doctors are the best in the entire world. >> reporter: like dr. naroba and nurse practitioner who treated addie with a new approach to aml developed at st. jude. >> she got a five course of chemotherapy. >> you looked at her genes and boosted and adjusted the chemotherapy to treat her. >> yes. >> what did her process and journey look like while she was here? >> she is a fighter. she would need a blood transfusion and at the same time, she would bring her guitar and sing for us. >> she did that while getting treatment? >> yes. >> treatment that ultimately led to addie's cancer-free future. and permitted this young patient to pursue her dream in the country music industry. >> everybody meet addie pratt, st. jude cancer survivor. >> three years later, i get this call, and they're like, brad paisley wants you to sing on a song that he's written and has a plug for st. jude in it. next thing i know, i'm driving to nashville. and it was the best night of my

life. >> reporter: a once in a lifetime chance to perform "alive right now," something brad paisley still recalls. >> she showed up and it's a live tv taping and she just floored everybody. >> there was a line that struck me, where you all sing, "it's great to be alive right now, by the grace of god somehow, no one knows how long a time." who were you trying to reach? >> probably myself. these kids here are actually forced way too young to wrestle with that idea of the sands in the hourglass being finite. people like addie who go through this become so mature, so fast, and handle it with way more grace than most adults. it's really inspiring. >> well, thank you. oh, man. brad, you got me crying over here! >> reporter: today, addie is striking out with her own song called "the woman that i am,"

about her personal battle with cancer. a song she sang for the st. jude community at a special event where she and paisley reunited once more. >> "the woman that i am" just about empowerment. there's a line in it that says "every broken wing taught me how to fly." and that's the message. is that no matter what you've been through, there is hope. >> reporter: the survival rate for the kind of cancer addie had is now closer to 70%, thanks in part to research done at st. jude. one more reason addie says she'll keep using her voice for the young lives at st. jude. >> when you look back and think about that time, does it affect the way you look at life? >> for sure. i couldn't imagine doing anything else with my life than giving back and doing everything that i can to give hope to somebody else. ♪ the woman that i am ♪ >> "every broken wing has taught me how to fly," she says. addie is living her dream.

she now lives in nashville, where she works for the organization that actually does fund-raising and awareness for st. jude. she met up with brad paisley at an event called country cares, which is a big st. jude fund-raiser. in fact, you can find the video to her song on today.com. back to you guys. >> wow, just beautiful. morgan, thank you. for the first time in our 21 years of the series, marlo is not with us this morning. she's taking some time off after the loss of her beloved husband, phil donahue. >> stepping in is her husband, tony thomas. we're so used to having marlo here on the couch with us. how is she doing? >> she's doing as best can be expected. she's -- she lost her guy, you know, that was a 44-year marriage that was a love affair. a true love affair. everybody that called me said, i can't believe that their marriage was such a love affair and the chemistry.

they were very, very close. and i believe it's going to be a while before she can handle this. but she'll be back next year. >> please give her our love, absolutely. we know that she will be very proud that you're here talking about the work of st. jude, which means so much to her and to you. let's talk about leukemia. because that's one of the areas that st. jude has really improved the survival rate for. >> there's a.l.l., acute leukemia, and when the door was opened, we were at 4%, now we're at over 90%. now, aml, that was a tough, tough blood cancer to deal with. and it's at 70% now, but one must remember, that it took 40 years to get there and a lot of kids didn't make it. and we have to try harder and we are. and because of the technology and our advanced research, i believe we will escalate the survival rates.
