tuesday morning to you. 6:00 right now. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we're going to have a look at that commute with mike coming up in just a bit. but first let's start out with that forecast. did a lot of dealing with a lot of rain over the last few days. today it's still lingering in parts of the bay area, but we are expecting it to clear out later this afternoon, so it's a soggy morning commute for a lot of people as you're getting up and heading out. we've seen a wave of showers moving through the north bay, and another one over san francisco and extending over toward the east bay, so a closer look shows that most of the activity is light to moderate. and if you have the nbc bay area app, you can see exactly what stormranger is scanning and also get alerts as rain approaches your location. we are seeing it pretty much covering most of the marin county into southern napa and sonoma counties, and it's extending over toward vallejo as well, and over toward solano county. as you're getting up and heading out for the south
6:02 am
county. still, that chance of rain through 7:00. after that, it's just cloudy and a cool day with highs in the upper seconds here and only a few peeks of sunshine as our high temperatures will be much cooler than normal. our cold mornings will settle back in over the next few days, so we'll take a look at those temperatures. mike still tracking a traffic alert and two slowing areas, but one traffic alert. the traffic alert is eastbound 24. chp called that as you're heading past oak hill and getting in toward lafayette. two lanes still blocked by a crash, and they need several vehicles removed with tow trucks. that's complicated. even though it's counter commute, the commute direction is distracted and it's complicated by the fact that they need more tow trucks for another crash westbound in your commute direction. that's the reason for a bigger backup at fish ranch that's just shy of the caldecott tunnel. outside the tunnel, westbound 24 has also possibly slowing, and the right shoulder blocked by several vehicles there. that's the stretch for 24. another

crash south 13 opposite your commute right at the split or the merge with 580. and that is affecting folks again counter commute. the commute direction shows some slowing down the east shore freeway toward the bay bridge, where we do have a slow build at the toll plaza. this tuesday has a lighter volume, but it's still tuesday, and maybe the last hurrah for folks getting in for meetings today. to the office. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, this week we know thanksgiving travel is going to reach some peak levels. but as more people are gathering, some may bring some winter bugs with them. today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us now with a look at where we stand with this respiratory virus season. and chris, they were pushing big time for us to get the flu and covid vaccines right. and not a lot of people took that advice. but the good news is marcus and laura, is that the three big respiratory viruses that are usually circulating and surging during this time of year, they're mostly low, not just in california, but nationwide, which will matter if you are hopping on a plane. here is the big picture. flu is low but rising in california. low across
6:04 am
the u.s, covid is low in california and stable or declining across the country. but respiratory syncytial virus or that rsv, which is most dangerous for babies and elderly folks that is rising in california and elevated in the south and the east. so all of this is according to the california department of public health and the cdc. so the advice is still to mask up. if you are gathering with someone who is vulnerable or if you're headed into a crowded setting like ginger at sfo or going on an airplane. and while many bay area counties are ordering their health care workers to mask up when providing patient care, there are no such orders for regular folks. sonoma county's interim health officer says. still, you have to do what's right for you and your family. people have to realize you know, as we gather for the holidays, as we come indoors, because it's colder, we're going to share our germs. it's inevitable. so any little thing that we can do,
6:05 am
particularly even in family gatherings, if you have members of your family who are particularly vulnerable either either because they're elderly or because they have an immunosuppression, you know, their immune system doesn't work well. it's really important to remember that and try to protect those people as much as possible. well, as marcus mentioned, the cdc really does recommend flu and covid vaccination, particularly for children five and under and adults 65 and older, pregnant women and all people with underlying health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, asthma or who are immunocompromised. it is maybe too late to boost your immunity through vaccines for thanksgiving, seeing as it's just a couple days away. but it is not too early to put it on your to do list ahead of christmas, hanukkah, new year's celebrations, and whatever else you have planned. marcus. yeah, i got my two shot. boom boom. good sunday. so not enough time
6:06 am
for thanksgiving, but hopefully by christmas. i'm good. good. good job. all right. thanks, chris. well, happening today in southern california. la county prosecutors face the deadline to respond to a petition challenging the conviction of the menendez brothers. in court yesterday, that judge pushed for their upcoming resentencing hearing to january 30th. this is to give the county's new da time to review the case. lyle and erik menendez are seeking to overturn the life sentence for the murder of their parents in the mid 90s. they did not appear in court yesterday, in part due to technical glitches. prosecutors say today must respond to the petition calling for the brothers sentencing unconstitutional in light of new evidence. also today, santa clara valley water agency leaders, they will debate new homeless encampment policies. the water resources protection zone ordinance is a culmination of a series of feedback sessions. this is meant to devise new strategies to tackle encampments along creeks and waterways. at one point, directors considered issuing steep fines or even jailing

the white house, or perhaps california's race for governor two years from now. political experts say it's a big decision for harris. which path do i want? a path where i'm likely to succeed the governorship. a path that would be the top office in the world. the presidency, but much less of a guarantee. with that choice. kamala harris is a brilliant, brilliant person, and she's a wonderful politician. she would make a fantastic governor. one cannot lose a presidential race and then become the leader of a party. sadly. a new berkeley igs poll says nearly half of california voters would be very or somewhat likely to support her candidacy. if she does make a run for california governor. let's take a live look outside over at sfo this morning. you can see there are a lot of folks ready to travel this holiday season. so today, tomorrow and sunday are three of the busiest days for thanksgiving holiday travel season across the u.s. the tsa

there saying that for they're forecasting that more than 18 million people plan to fly between now and next monday. that's a 6% increase over the same period last year. happening now, if your thanksgiving plans include a trip to the sierra, most ski resorts have received more than a foot of snow since last week, and there's still more snow in the forecast this morning. chains are still required for highway 50 and interstate 80, but look at this fun for some families along highway 50. yesterday they pulled over and they didn't even need skis and snowboards. we finally like, you know, find the spot. and we were like, yeah, i think it was enough. you know, it's enough space here so he can slide. he's very he's actually enjoying it. yeah. no kidding. simple joys there. look at that smile. woo! the cierra expected to be dry and cold by thanksgiving day, so make sure you bundle up. yeah. so, look, i know a lot of people are excited that it's going to be dry
6:10 am
thanksgiving day. yeah, but you want to throw an extra couple of layers in that suitcase before you go because it's going to be cold. and just a heads up that we're still seeing snow coming down as we speak. so if you're traveling or at least early today, we're still going to see some very tricky travel conditions. we're looking mainly at south lake tahoe, where the snow is a little bit heavier. so going on 80, maybe a little bit more slippery, and then looking at palisades, we're still looking at snow in the forecast today. highs in the mid 30s. but look at these overnight temperatures in the teens for the next several days. but once again the good news is that we will be clearing out tomorrow. and this winter storm warning will be expiring. but between now and then we're still going to have gusty winds and most likely some chain controls and very slow travel times. but as far as the additional snow, we're going to see, it's not a lot. it's only about 1 to 2in of additional snowfall. and this takes us all the way through the end of next week. so we're not expecting any more snow anytime soon, but hopefully that

hopefully improves your for driving there. for the next several days. so we'll be watching that and we'll talk about our temperatures here in the bay area. but before you hit the road, you might have to fill up. so here's mike with a look at lower gas prices. yeah. make sure you keep that tank well filled before you head in through the cierra in case you get some delays. don't want to get caught without gas. their best price in the bay is worthy of being in the top ten for the state. it's in alameda county. we have 349 at livermore marathon on home street today in the south bay. the next price up is santa clara's best. three. 77 at platinum gas on washington street and in the city, san francisco's low is 379. make it quick and head to double time on mission street. that's at the bottom price. you can get all these prices wherever you're going. gasbuddy.com will give you a good reference there on the roadway, we have a lighter early commute, but things are really kicking in and very slow for two sections of 24. basically between orinda and
6:12 am
walnut creek. it's jammed up eastbound. there is an alert for three separate crashes. the opposite, your main commute. so unusual slowdown there. getting past oak hill and then westbound. your commute direction jams up to fish ranch road, where three vehicles involved in a crash there blocking slow lane and the right shoulder. combined, there are about eight cars that have to be removed from both of those scenes, and that's going to be a shortage of tow trucks. this could take a while, but the backup has reached the bay bridge toll plaza. despite a lighter tuesday commute so far. back to you. thanks very much. well, marking a major milestone coming up here on today in the bay out of the ashes. a first look inside the first home fully rebuilt following that fire that destroyed the town of lahaina. plus, walmart becomes the biggest company ever to scale back on die. we'll talk about that. let's go out to the futures. this morning. markets were rattled overseas. but look okay this morning after trump's proposed tariffs. plus san francisco is set to show off

after that, it's going to be cloudy with some peeks of sunshine and highs headed for the low 60s. for today, it's going to be cool these next several days, but at least we get sunshine. we'll talk about that coming up. and we are looking at a lighter volume for this tuesday's commute overall. but 24 big problems in both directions out of orinda. your commute direction westbound. there's one crash in eastbound there's three crashes to clear as you head in toward lafayette. we'll track those and the rest of the commute routes. this morning. coming up. well good morning. very happy tuesday to you. the dow hit a new record monday. but markets may be a bit rattled over something incoming president trump posted on social media. we'll talk more about that in a minute. feds are going to send less money to intel than intel might want under the chips bill. still a lot like $8 billion, but less because washington's going to subtract about a half a billion. it already paid intel for chips for the military. starbucks apparently has been hit by some kind of ransomware attack that's

canada. the electric car maker rivian will also get billions in government loans to build its plant in georgia. the california based company has been struggling partly because it's having trouble sourcing parts. something tariffs might make worse. now these loans are absolutely nothing new. it's the same government money that got tesla off the ground, though tesla got a lot less. and walmart says it's backing off its d e i program. that's diversity equity inclusion. other companies tractor supply, harley davidson, molson coors among them have done the same. walmart says it will drop some a drop out of some of the indices that measure equal opportunity will no longer count race as a factor when sourcing goods, and it's also going to rethink its contributions to pride efforts that are done by the employees. this comes as an activist investor in walmart puts pressure on them. he says, quote, no more woke walmart.

interesting. all right. thanks, scott. you bet. well, new at six. a milestone moment out of the ashes of the deadly maui firestorm. one family in lahaina has so much to be thankful for. they're moving into the first rebuilt home after passing a final inspection last week. they say it took six months to rebuild, something they feared would take years. the mayor there says more than 120 homes are currently in one phase or another of being rebuilt following the massive firestorm in august of last year. well, happening tonight, a sure sign the holidays have arrived in san francisco. beautiful sighting there. so, pier 39, beginning its nightly holiday light show. this is video of the 60 foot tall christmas tree now up after getting into place earlier this month. it hails from siskiyou

6:21 am
then the rest of the day, it's dry as we start to see some sun peeking out around 3:00. it will continue to clear out later on this afternoon into the evening. looking at the bigger picture here, if you're going to be traveling, we're going to be tracking everything going on, including the snow over the rockies, and that big cold front that's been moving across the east coast and dropping those temperatures here at home. we're still looking at some light rain moving through the north bay, as well as san francisco, with a closer look at some of the showers now crossing the bay bridge from san francisco over toward oakland. and then we're also seeing some light rain over parts of the east bay, and anywhere from mill valley to san rafael, across the bay to vallejo. we're seeing the rain coming down this morning, but later on today, it's going to be partly to mostly cloudy and temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s. we're up to 60 in gilroy today, and 60 in walnut creek. also seeing 60 for oakland this afternoon and
6:22 am
fremont in the upper 50s, and also upper 50s for san mateo and redwood city in san francisco. up to 60 downtown, but mostly 50s and a breezy wind for the afternoon in the north bay. 59 in sonoma and napa, and 60 in santa rosa. even though our temperatures for highs pretty uniform. but it's going to be cold these next few days. take a look at what we'll wake up to tomorrow morning. this morning we're in the 50s, tomorrow morning, 30s and low 40s. so a big drop in temperatures is coming and it gets even colder on thanksgiving morning. you're going to wake up to 33 degrees in napa, 31 in santa rosa and 35 in dublin. even some mid 30s for the south bay. and this is a black friday. if you're getting up early, trying to get some of those deals, you'll need extra layers because our temperatures will be near freezing at least. looking at the sky condition and rain chances, we are all good after today, so once this storm

system clears, we don't see anything else coming, at least for the next week. and our thanksgiving is looking dry with highs in the upper seconds. it's going to be chilly in the next several mornings. will be in the mid 30s. all right mike, it looks like there's a lot going on, including in richmond. yeah. flashing lights, more flashing lights at the bridge over to san rafael. we're out of lanes at the gore point, but a second tow truck, a flatbed, has now arrived to pull up what is either a disabled vehicle, but i think it was a fender bender. not on the chp report in front of our live camera. that adds to the distraction westbound. that's one issue here, but a lighter overall volume. the big problem is 24 continues westbound. we have one crash in your commute direction around fish ranch road. and eastbound we have three crashes. counter commute just about oak hill. back to you. thanks, mike. 623. a unique effort to fight climate change from the sky. next on today in the bay, meteorologist kari hall shows us the actions being taken to ease our climate

6:32 am
let's get to meteorologist kari hall. should we be concerned about the weather at all? well, that's always a concern this time of year, especially when you start to throw snow in the mix and really, it's anywhere across the country that could throw things off a chain reaction across the country. but as of right now, we are seeing the storm system that's bringing the bay area some rain now changing over to snow as it moves over toward the rockies. and we're also seeing a blast of cold air with some rain out ahead of that moving through the east coast. but look at the airport delays right now. none at any of the major airports. so that's some good news to start out on. this tuesday morning. but as you're packing your bags, let me show you the high temperatures for other parts of the country. if you're going to chicago, the high temperature today, 39 degrees and plan on the high on thanksgiving in the 20s and lows in the teens. so that's how cold this air is. that's continuing to move across the country while we're still looking at some mild weather
6:33 am
here in the west. and, mike, you've been tracking any road delays and also what you may encounter as you're heading out this morning. kari we've been monitoring that road to the cierra highway 50, interstate 80. both do have chain screening going on, so do bring those chains because of continuing conditions through the cierra and then heading south. kari, you've been talking about that system that we had now pushing south. and that might affect folks heading down to the grapevine and along 101. so keep that in mind. meanwhile, locally lighter traffic expected today tuesday before thanksgiving. a lot of folks heading to the airport. ginger talks about san jose, san francisco and oakland, and we're looking at a big delay now for highway 24. be aware westbound is jammed up toward fish ranch road, where there's one crash. eastbound, there are three crashes getting into lafayette. and that's really unusual. this whole quarter tied up for highway 24. possibility of some slicker roads as well. back to you. thanks, mike. well, we know that holiday travel rush is on, and it's set to be record

breaking. triple a says 80 million people will be traveling 50 miles or more today in the bay's ginger conejero saab over at the very busy sfo this morning. and ginger, i know tsa is saying that everyone should arrive early. that's right. good morning, marcus and laura. they're saying the earlier the better. and we just spoke to a family not long ago. they say they intentionally booked their flights this early to the east coast so they can beat some of that travel rush. and projections are up this year. i want to give you a live look at the security checkpoint here at terminal one. i'm told this looks pretty long, but it actually is fast moving. about 10 to 15 minutes of a wait here and as i mentioned, those projections are up. so you do want to get here early if you can, starting today until december 2nd. that is the crunch time for the thanksgiving holiday. let's give you some more numbers here. tsa says that they project to screen more than 18 million people. that number is up 6% from last year. today and tomorrow are expected to be the busiest days. but people took off last week, so tsa says
6:35 am
it has already picked up. now, if you do find yourself in a long line, tsa says take advantage of that. that's the ideal time to take everything out of your pockets your cell phone, your other cell phone, your keys, your wallet, your tissues, whatever is in your pockets. and put them directly into your carry on bag. that way, you save a little time when you get to the stainless steel tables. also, instead of putting them into the bin that means you're less likely to leave something behind in a bin. well, speaking of leaving things behind when you're done to leave the thanksgiving holiday behind, sunday is expected to be even busier than today. and tomorrow. tsa says get to the airport early, at least two hours before your flight, maybe even earlier, to be on the safe side in case there are dreaded delays or cancellations. so let's take a look at those delays and cancellations this morning. these are the latest numbers.
6:36 am
there are 52 delays here at sfo. just one flight cancellation over at san francisco bay oakland international. there are eight delays, no cancellations and down to the south bay at sjc, two delays and no cancellations. now let's say you're hitting the road today. triple a says you are joining a record 71 million people who will travel by car over thanksgiving. that surpasses 2019 numbers by more than a million people. and there's some good news for people on the road. those gas prices are lower this thanksgiving. the national average is 307. as of today. it was about 325 a year ago. i've got to say, we've got some pretty pleasant travelers here at sfo. have a couple people waving to the camera. there you go. have a nice flight, sir. triple a says if you want to hit the road on this trip, this thanksgiving holiday, you want to do so before ten today and tomorrow. coming back, they suggest you leave before one on saturday and sunday, or you have to wait until seven on monday, 7
6:37 am
p.m. that is. do you see those those smiles? people are pretty happy traveling, even if it is a little early. i think it's because they're getting here on time. they're feeling like they're ahead of the game. that is some good advice that tsa says now amtrak. another way to travel is also expecting today and tomorrow to be pretty busy sunday as well. and they're expecting to surpass their 130,000 travelers that traveled back on sunday last year. so really record breaking all around guys. we'll have more for you and those record breaking numbers later on in our newscast, but for now, we're live at sfo. ginger conejero saab today in the bay. yeah, it's nice to see all the people waving behind us a good mood. they were smiling because vacation has begun. exactly. let's hope it stays nice as opposed to some of the pictures you see where people have to sleep in the airports. and it's good that it's all great, right? yes. we'll make sure you stay with nbc bay area. both on air and online as that holiday travel rush gets underway. we're going to send you alerts for anything that could possibly impact your commute on our free
