logan airport in boston. and the ongoing shortage of air traffic controllers has caused delays at another airport here in the northeast. we're going to turn to al in just a moment for the latest holiday forecast. adrian broaddus is standing by at chicago's o'hare airport. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. high traffic could mean long lines at security checkpoints. airport officials expect today and tomorrow to be the busiest of the week. this morning, it's the perfect storm for holiday travel headaches. two major weather systems dumping heavy snow and rain from the west coast to the plains to the east coast just as record numbers of travelers hit the roads and skies for thanksgiving. the tsa expecting more than 18 million passengers at airports this week, a 22% jump from two years ago. why did you choose to leave today? >> we were trying to get ahead of all the holiday travel traffic.

>> reporter: in san francisco, heavy winds elaying nearly a quarter of flights. and in newark, a shortage of air traffic controllers causing big delays. in boston, holdups with two separate plane collisions in hours. overnight, an airplane carrying five people struck by an empty jetblue aircraft being towed by a tug vehicle in boston. hours later, at the same airport, an american airlines' plane clipping the wing tip of a frontier airlines jet preparing to depart with 200 passengers on board. some frustrated passengers wait waiting for nearly two days for a flight. >> i have no idea what's going on. >> reporter: gas prices have

fallen to $3.06 a gallon, down from $3.26 a year ago. back to that collision. frontier is offering $100 travel vouchers or full refunds. plus they're offering meal and hotel vouchers. travelers are bracing for snow in the coming days, hoping that weather doesn't impact their flight as they make their way to the thanksgiving table. hoda. mr. roker is watching those holiday week storms and their timing very closely for all of us. >> yesterday we were talking about these models not getting together. well, they're starting to get some consensus. on the east coast, a quick hit of rain, snow as you get up into new england. out west, it's going to cross the country. impacts will go from the west to the east coast. today the pacific storm heads into the rockies. look for rain in california, mountain snows and snow starting to develop right on through the rockies.

is going to be a problem. i-70, i-87 as you get to the south. pack the patience. take your time. you're going to get to where you need to go, but just not when you expect to get it. take it easy. now to a move that could have a major impact on consumer prices. president-elect trump vowing overnight to make good on his campaign promise, saying he will slap new tariffs on products from canada, mexico and china on his very first day in office. here to break down what this could mean for you, your wallet, for business in this country, business correspondent christine romans. we have tasked you this morning with schoolhouse rock. the real idea of what are tariffs, how will they affect consumers, because this is something trump campaigned on and he's ready to deliver on this promise. >> this is an import tax.

a tariff is an import tax. imagine you are a load of lumber coming from canada to the american housing market. as it crosses the border, whoever is buying that lumber in the united states must pay a tariff, according to the president-elect, 25% tariff. a dollar of lumber now costs $1.25. who pays that? donald trump keeps saying the countries pay it, the government of canada would pay 25 cents on every dollar. that's not how it works. whoever imports it into the united states pays it, and they pass it along to consumers. these taxes essentially end up in your grocery bill, your housing bill. american consumers pay them or the companies that import them pay them. alarm bells in the capitals last night of our closest friends and allies because they see this as something that could disrupt supply chains. it could lead to counter tariffs and retaliation.

>> how would a retaliatory tariff work? >> imagine canada, for example. it has a big auto cars. half of the auto parts were made in america, shipped to canada, put in a car and shipped back to the united states. it's a very dynamic cross-border situation. if they're going to be taxed to send something to us, why wouldn't they tax the united states to send the parts in the first place? it sounds complicated, but when you start throwing taxes on top of taxes among your best friends, that disrupts supply chains, it can raise prices. what's interesting is president trump talked about being tariff man before because he wants tariffs to have stuff made in america, saying if you're going to make it someplace else, i'm going to put a big tariff on it because i want it made in america. this time it's different. he wants these countries to stop illegal immigration and the drug trade.

this is more of a punishment, a different kind of rationale than we've seen before. wondering if this is an opening salvo of what would be a long negotiation. but on day one prices could start rising early next year. i was covering the port strikes a few months ago. as i was talking to people who bring things in and out of these ports, they say we have been stockpiling goods that we import because we expect big, big tariffs and inflation and supply problems in the spring. so industry is preparing for this. >> inflation is what most analysts think led to donald trump's victory. people were sick of paying more prices. >> if you have 10% tariffs on chinese goods, which donald trump has promised, goldman sachs said that would add one percentage point to inflation.

instead of 2.5% inflation, you have 3% inflation. you put big tariffs on our closest allies, that would mean more inflation too. we are following a major development in the federal criminal cases against the president-elect. special counsel jack smith filing motions to drop all charges tied to trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the mishandling of classified documents, citing justice department policy that prohibits the prosecution of a sitting president. laura jarrett is here with details. good morning. >> good morning to you. the cases were a first of their kind, striking allegations, an effort to cling to power, the mishandling of our nation's top secrets, claims only made possible because mr. trump was a private citizen at the time. from the very beginning there were delays and detours and ultimately a successful strategy in bringing all of this to a shift end. first, the political victory, and this morning, a legal one. the top prosecutor overseeing

the federal charges against president-elect trump formally asking to drop them. special counsel jack smith writing, the justice department's longstanding policy against prosecuting a sitting president should apply to the president-elect as well. notwithstanding the gravity of the crimes charged and the strength of the government's proof. a federal judge in washington quickly signing off on the move, which was expected, bringing the final conclusion to a historic case accusing mr. trump of a criminal plot to reverse the 2020 election results as he ran for reelection. >> my office will seek a speedy trial so our evidence can be tested in court. >> but it never got off the ground, marred in delays and cut down by the supreme court's decision last summer, finding some of mr. trump's conduct immune from any prosecution at all, while then-candidate trump, who plead not guilty to all charges, sought to use his criminal exposure to his criminal advantage.

>> you get indicted for ing with a presidential election where you have every right to do it. you get indicted, and your poll numbers go up. >> reporter: smith is expected to resign before trump can fire him, also moving to dismiss the charges he brought in florida accusing mr. trump of illegally hoarding classified documents at mar-a-lago after he left office and obstructing the government's efforts to get them back. >> those are the federal cases. there are two other state cases, one awaiting sentencing. >> the georgia case is still sort of a mystery. it was tied up on appeal over that alleged ethical conflict with d.a. fani willis. and the defense wants to wipe out his conviction in the hush money case. there will be a final report from special counsel jack smith detailing his decision making and why he decided not to bring

certain charges that we should see. >> the trump justice department doesn't have any say over those state cases. >> has no say, and you can't be pardoned for them. the push for peace in the middle east. israel and hezbollah appear to be on the verge of a cease-fire deal, but both sides are continuing to carry out new attacks. keir simmons joins us. >> reporter: european diplomats and u.s. officials signaling to nbc news this morning that we are potentially on the brink of something. a cease-fire deal might involve hezbollah ing its heavy weapons behind the la tan any river. the leader of hezbollah saying any agreement would need to be complete and comprehensive. that doesn't sound like israel saying it reserves the right to

ride raid sirens in kyiv. rush launched 188 drones at this country just overnight, a record number. russian attacks have been escalating in recent days. today nato and ukrainian officials are convening an urgent meeting. russia is advancing at its fastest pace in two years, according to an assessment from the institute for the study of war. moscow is firing swarms of drones daily as well as artillery and missiles. but it was russia's launch of a new kind of missile last week that got nato's attention. ukrainian intelligence clocked it flying 11 times the speed of sound. russia has the momentum as the holiday season in kyiv begins. >> oh my gosh. merry christmas. >> reporter: this charity gives psychological support to children whose parents were killed in battle or had their homes destroyed by making cupcakes, writing letters to soldiers and tying bracelets and

travel this thanksgiving period. we're seeing about 10 to 15 minutes of a wait time for the security checkpoint. this morning. there are 57 flight delays and one cancellation here at sfo. eight over at san francisco bay, oakland international and four delays down in san jose. there are no flight cancellations in oakland and at sjc. i'm bob redell in dublin. nbc news reports that the cost of going to the grocery store for that thanksgiving meal this year is actually cheaper compared to last year, according to the american farm bureau federation. thanksgiving dinner this year, expected to cost just over $58 for ten people at the table. that's a 5% drop from last year. and when adjusted for inflation, the farm bureau says this is the cheapest thanksgiving meal since 1984, when they started surveying thanksgiving grocery store prices. let's see if the weather is going to cooperate. checking in with meteorologist kari hall. and we are seeing some lingering showers this morning. cloudy skies overhead in the south bay, and the radar has been tracking

this is the one that comes cutting across the country. impacts are going to be from coast to coast. the pacific coast storm heading into the rockies, snow developing, california rain and mountain snows. then san diego, las vegas and los angeles, denver as well may see some major delays. tomorrow, this storm will redevelop east of the rockies from st. louis, indianapolis, into upstate new york. tomorrow, the big impacts, denver, kansas city's airport, st. louis as well, nashville to chicago and denver. detroit may see a few delays. the roads will be a mess. i-65, i-75, i-80. then thanksgiving day, a real nightmare in the northeast. heavy rain, gusty winds and this storm is going to bring a lot of snow from syracuse to parts of new england. i-70, i-80 all the way down to i-95 all going to mean a slowdown. take it easy. you'll get there. just don't rush it. guys.

use some help. >> jude, good morning. i watched this last night. it's very intense and very captivating. it like pulls you in. >> yeah, that was the idea. >> it's working. >> we were really intrigued when we got the script. first of all, it's a true crime story. it took place 40 years ago. it has some real relevance to today. but more importantly, sort of wrapped up in a wonderful thrilling genre. it reminded us a lot of the films from the late '70s and '80s, real crowd pleasers like the films of loumet and friedkin. it's thrilling. >> it absorbs you almost right away. it's sort of this cat-and-mouse game between you and your costar nicholas holt, who you just told me was the kid in "about a boy".

>> he's the sweetest, gentlest. >> in this movie, he's absolutely terrifying. the two of you, there's this distance between you which i read this morning the director kind of cultivated. >> he's a brilliant director and cultivated an awful lot. he realized nick was rehearsing his story, his theme of the film and i was rehearsing mine. he just kept us apart. it makes sense . you look for any kind of plausible, you know, something you can sink your teeth into. i think it wouldn't have made sense for us to spend lunch together. >> like you're gabbing over the craft services table. >> exactly. we stayed apart until that scene. >> you didn't meet each other. >> not at all, spent no time together whatsoever. it helped. i was always saying what's he doing, how is that part of the film going? that edge, i hope, plays. >> it does.

it's based on a series of true events that a lot of us forgot or didn't know about, about a white supremacist group that was trying to escalate and have an armed militia. >> that's right. this took place in '83 in the pacific northwest. the fbi uncovered it through a series of robberies and linked the ies to financing an urban army. they were following the seven-step guide through a book they were all obsessed with, and they got to step five. it was a serious threat. >> it's haunting. we need to ask about "star wars." you are now in the "star wars" universe. we're of the same age. "star wars" was it. were you one of the kids playing with the figurines? >> i was prime age. prior to "star wars" i'd probably seen or been taken to

see the disney animated movies we all love. and then "star wars" landed and changed everything. >> do you remember when you saw it? >> i do. going to the cinema was such an event. it sort of flooded everything. it was all i played. it was all i wanted to play with the little toys and collect the cards. >> now you're in this new trilogy. what is your character? do you pay homage to characters you've loved all your life? >> in the back of my mind i'm thinking of the wonderful influences those characters had on me. the guy i play has a sort of cynical roguish quality. >> i'm feeling han solo. >> he's hard to pin down. his name is jod. he's hard to pin down. >> close to jude. >> i know. i took that as a compliment. >> for sure.
