morning. i'm frances rivera. glad you're with me and hope you are ready. tomorrow is thanksgiving and travelers are facing a growing weather threat. rain is causing air traffic delays on both coasts, and it's expected to get worse. adding to the travel headache is a shortage of air traffic controllers. the faa says it's taking steps for the holiday week to deal with the staffing shortages on the roads. major interstates from the midwest to the east coast could all be affected today by incoming storms bringing rain and snow. let's turn now to nbc meteorologist andy lassman. angie. good morning. how are we looking so far, especially for those traveling today? good morning frances. we're looking okay in some spots, but we do have a couple locations that travelers are going to want to pay close attention to. as we've got this next storm system crossing the country. dry across the east. some snow and some rain across parts of the rockies. that's going to be where we see the most impactful weather for the first half of the day today. and then that shifts into parts of the ohio valley and the midwest. that's where we'll see rain, especially
4:03 am
into the evening hours for that commute tonight. by tomorrow, that all shifts into the mid-atlantic and stretches into the northeast, and we'll even see some snow. additionally, for folks across the new england area. so big picture. look, we'll see that rain for folks in places like saint louis. the snow for denver. those are the spots i want you to watch for delays. boston to miami looks great. phoenix, you look good, too. los angeles similar story on the roads. we'll see the heaviest snow across the mountains. so of course it will be difficult across i-70. and that rain for the midwest. looking ahead to tomorrow, notice all the rain for the east. this is where the trouble spots will be. it will be wet on the roadways. we'll see some of that snow causing slick conditions across new england, especially interior areas. but the rest of the country, chicago to denver and out to san francisco looks pretty good. frances. everyone's travels are safe, smooth and stress free. thanks, angie. breaking news now, israel and hezbollah have agreed to a united states brokered cease fire in lebanon after more than a year of fighting. president joe biden outlined the deal from the white house, which took effect early this morning. local time. the
4:04 am
fighting across the lebanese-israeli border will end. will end. this is designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities. let's be clear, israel did not launch this war. the lebanese people did not seek that war either. nor did the united states. let's go now live to nbc's claudio lavanga for the latest. good morning. claudio. good morning frances. well, that ceasefire deal went into effect early this morning in lebanon. now, as part of the deal, both hezbollah and israel will cease all hostilities. israel will withdraw all of its troops from lebanon in the next 60 days. so in different stages. hezbollah has guaranteed that it will not entrench itself close to the border with israel. and finally, the regular lebanese army will move down south to take back full control of its territory.
4:05 am
now, the hope is that this will end the bloodiest conflict between hezbollah and israel in decades, which has left, at least according to the lebanese health ministry, more than 3800 people dead and more than a million displaced from their homes, especially from the south, near the border with israel. of course, now hezbollah has not commented officially on the cease fire deal yet, even though a senior official has told the lebanese media that he believes that the group will emerge stronger because of the after the war. while the prime minister of israel, benjamin netanyahu, said that now israel can entirely focus on its ongoing conflict with hamas in gaza and on the threat posed by iran. but he also warned that if hezbollah or anyone else breaks the deal, then israel will reserve the right to exercise its right of self-defense. francis. okay, claudio lavanga
4:06 am
for us. claudio. thank you. with only 54 days left until the inauguration, the transition of power has officially begun. president elect trump's team has signed an agreement with the white house, allowing them to begin accessing resources and working directly with federal agencies. nbc's brie jackson joins us now from dc. hi, brie. good morning. so mr. trump has just chosen someone to lead another one of those agencies. good morning, frances. that's right. president elect trump has picked a candidate to lead the national institutes of health, naming doctor jay bhattacharya to take over the job once held by doctor anthony fauci. the stanford university professor would have taken a much different approach to the pandemic. he was a vocal critic of the lockdowns and has promoted the idea of herd mentality. meanwhile, the incoming border czar, tom homan, visited texas. he says he's ready to carry out plans for mass deportations, starting with criminals. while speaking to members of the texas national guard. homan had a message for
4:07 am
democratic mayors and governors who have threatened to push back. let me be clear there is going to be a mass deportation because we just finished a mass illegal immigration crisis on the border, and i'm sending a message for people who say they're going to get in our way. don't test us. the nation wants a safe country. it's unclear how these deportations would be carried out, but a study from a pro-immigration advocacy group estimated that up to 4 million mixed status families are at risk of being split up, and the plan could cost as much as $315 billion. 21 states are part of a program that allows state and local law enforcement to help enforce federal immigration law, and critics argue that this gives local police an unlawful excuse to deport people. so as the program ramps up, it could be at the center of a legal

showdown. francis brie jackson for us. brie. thank you. the biden administration proposing a rule change that could lead to expensive, in-demand drugs like wegovy being covered by medicare and medicaid. stephanie gosk explains a proposal that could dramatically change the battle against obesity. the biden administration, looking to expand medicaid and medicare coverage to include weight loss medications. how big a deal is this potentially for your patients? oh my goodness. this would be wonderful. for now, medicaid and medicare only cover the popular drugs, including ozempic. if patients are diabetic or have certain obesity related conditions, people struggling with obesity alone are forced to pay out of pocket at roughly $1,000 a month. doctor lori damania is an obesity specialist. it's heartbreaking to have one specific treatment option be so effective and yet so expensive.
4:09 am
it keeps it out of reach for many, many people. the hhs says 7.4 million beneficiaries would qualify at a cost of $36 billion over the next decade. but there are obstacles. the congressional budget office recently reported that a plan like this would cost billions more to medicare than the administration projects. there is also a mandatory 60 day public comment period before enacting a new rule, leaving the ultimate decision up to the next administration. president elect trump's choice to run medicare and medicaid doctor mehmet oz has publicly supported the use of weight loss drugs, but robert kennedy jr. mr. trump's pick to head hhs has argued lifestyle changes are the key to tackling obesity. they're counting on selling it to americans because we're so stupid and so addicted. addicted to drugs. doctor recommends a combination of lifestyle changes and medication. there's people who don't believe or agree that that is a disease, and yet it it
4:10 am
impacts over 150 other different illnesses. private insurance companies often fall medicare's lead. so if this rule becomes enacted, that could mean millions of americans could gain coverage for these very critical weight loss medications. back to you. stephanie. thank you. now let's get another check on the travel troubles. here's nbc meteorologist andrew lassman, who's back. hi again. angie. hi there. francis. let's talk about after the holiday. so friday, if you're heading home or maybe somewhere else for the weekend. we've got that lake effect snow ramping up across the great lakes. that's really what's going to impact us most through the next couple of days. so detroit, chicago, those will be some trouble spots with the windy conditions and of course that snow. otherwise looks pretty good across the interstates as we look ahead to saturday, really chilly temperatures start to settle in across the plains. teens for minneapolis, we've got 28 for cleveland. more of that snow piling up the rest of the country looks nice. boston, philadelphia. atlanta. you're going to be great. we'll see. maybe some of those delays again for chicago. and detroit. and
4:11 am
then we wrap up the weekend that december. chill is in place across the southeast with more of that lake effect snow on the way. that's a look at the weather across the country. let's see what's happening in your neighborhood. good wednesday morning. i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri will start it off with some chilly seconds and 40s and plenty of sunshine through the day up to 63. we'll stay dry and sunny for thanksgiving. more details on this in the cold mornings in the 30s. coming up at five. and that's a look at your forecast. frances, back to you. okay. thanks so much. early today is back in a minute with how trump's terror threat is already impacting industries and cars flying off the lot at airports. the auto theft crime ring targeting unsuspecting travelers with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. my skin was no longer mine. my active psoriatic arthritis joint symptoms held me back. don't let symptoms define you emerge as you with clearer skin with tremfya. most people saw 100% clear skin that stayed

morning karen. good morning frances. yes. trump's proposal to impose new 25% tariffs on imports from canada and mexico, as well as increasing tariffs by 10% on imports from china, really rocked markets on tuesday, with the autos industry being one of the sectors hardest hit. and this is amid concerns that it could disrupt close knit supply chains and production. and increase costs. now, this is not only cost of popular cars that are produced in mexico and canada, but also u.s. car makers who have their factories in, for example, mexico, and who import goods for the production from canada. and this is likely to raise costs not only of the cars, but also for the production line as well, which could have implications, of course, for consumers when they're purchasing these vehicles and inflation costs in general. and we really saw automakers take a hit in
4:14 am
markets. on tuesday, we saw shares of general motors drop 9% and ford 3%, and also felt ramifications over here in europe as well, with european car makers thinking that they could be next in line potentially. and it's not only cars, it's also drinks makers feeling that they could be hit by these tariffs too. so this would be imports of the likes of tequila from mexico or whiskey from canada. that also could be subject to higher costs as a result of these tariffs. now trump has said that this will help u.s. production and also stem illegal immigration, but it remains to be seen how far he will go with these tariffs and whether it's more of a sort of a suggestion that it. all right. we lost karen there. but we thank her for that. now to a consumer alert for anyone who is flying this holiday season. and leaving their car in the lot. emily ikeda has details on the thieves targeting some of the nation's busiest airport. reporter. adding to the stress of holiday travel, new warnings
