and sjc. the holiday travel rush officially in full force now. today is expected to be one of the busiest for people rushing to get to their homes for thanksgiving during their destinations, trying to get that doesn't look busy there right now. maybe they're taking later flights, but i promise you it is busy over those airports. triple a said about 6 million people will be flying domestically this holiday season. unfortunately, we don't see them there, but there are a lot. i promise you, if you're hitting the roads there, expect a lot of company. about 72 million people will drive to their thanksgiving destinations, and it will feel like they're all in front of you no matter what lane you pick. i was driving last night somewhere, and it took me a long time. well, at least the weather is clear. that's the good thing. but it is chilly this morning. yes it is. all right. have a good morning. today show is nex. good. wednesday morning. the record thanksgiving travel rush is on this morning. and so are concerns over that massive storm now sweeping across the country. good morning guys. it's november

27th. this is today. on the move. millions heading out for thanksgiving today with that major cross country storm threatening to make a mess out of those trips. we're like three hours early just to avoid any headache. flight delays, mounting traffic, building on the roads and the rough weather. it's just getting started. we've got it all covered, including al's full holiday forecast. breaking overnight push for peace in the middle east, a us brokered cease fire now in effect in lebanon. pausing more than a year of deadly violence between israel and hezbollah. president biden, now pushing hamas to accept its own deal. the only way out is to release the hostages, including american citizens. we're live in the region with the very latest. immigration showdown. president elect trump's incoming border czar issuing a warning to anyone who opposes the plan for mass deportations. don't test us. the nation wants to save country,

arrive, and what it all means for the future of fast food. and let's have a parade. the floats are decorated. the bands and balloons are set to go. and with just one day to go, we're getting ready for macy's thanksgiving day parade by bringing its magic right here to studio one, a today, wednesday, november 27th, 2020. for from nbc news. this is today with savannah guthrie and hoda kotb. live from studio one a in rockefeller plaza. good morning. good to see you. happy you're joining us on this wednesday morning. savannah is taking a day off. and craig, we can kind of feel the excitement bubbling, not just at thanksgiving. and the parade is tomorrow, but we got some magic outside. oh, check it out. we've got the mighty sound of the southeast. the university of south carolina marching band, they are rehearsing outside. they're going to perform throughout the
7:04 am
morning. they're actually getting set to take part in the macy's thanksgiving day parade for the very first time in the school's history. so we're excited to talk to them. and again, we're going to hear them perform in just a little bit. i like when it's a little home cooking. i'm glad they're here. i know you're going to have fun with them too. we all are. but first, the travel rush for the holidays kicking into high gear. let's check out some of the airports and highways across the country. getting ready to handle a record number of people hitting the skies and the roads. and we've been talking about it all week that rapidly moving coast to coast storm threatening to complicate plans for millions of americans today and tomorrow. al's got the updated forecast in just a moment, but let us begin with nbc's tom costello, who's watching the nation's airport. he's at reagan national. how's it looking? here we go. here we go. take a look. we've got an awful lot of people moving through the system already. the crowds have been long this morning, but they're moving pretty quickly. i got good news for you so far. minimal delays, minimal cancellations nationwide
7:05 am
ahead of the storm system. all these people trying to beat that storm system. the faa has opened up military airspace along the east coast and the gulf of mexico, and also put a halt to rocket launches in florida to keep the airspace moving and keep traffic moving on this record breaking week from seattle to sarasota, boston to the bay area winds here a hit the nation's airlines have spent months prepping for this week. this day, we're like three hours early just to avoid any headache. nearly 3 million tsa passenger screenings, 50,000 flights in the air and a coast to coast storm is threatening to disrupt one of the busiest thanksgiving travel periods on record, with heavy snow, arctic temperatures and heavy rain expected. the extreme weather potentially adding to the travel crush and already leading to delays and crowded airports on the east coast and the west. at united's center, near chicago, they monitor every weather

system, every flight worldwide. you're trying to stay ahead of the storm and even ahead of the weather channel, right? yes, several days ahead, if we can. the latest storm predictions fed directly to the captain's ipad in the cockpit. any time visibility starts going down, ceiling starts going down. you'll most likely see a delay. it's not just weather that will impact flights today. it's also the ongoing air traffic control, staffing shortages at newark airport, a critical united hub. united says 28,000 of its newark customers are being disrupted every day. the problems leading to a ground stop lasting past midnight. while the faa is training new controllers, it will take years to fully staff up nationwide. for its part, united is now using ai to read all of its flight data, then quickly reaching out to customers with flight updates. it is ingesting our flight notes to make sure that we understand the reason for the delay, and then that is then sending to a customer via text and email,
7:07 am
including weather radar images. so customers can see for themselves what's behind the delay and make their own choices. if my flight is canceled, am i better off letting you rebook me or should i get on my app and do it myself? our app is absolutely the path you should take to rebook yourself. yeah, so have that app handy and hopefully you won't need to rebook. bottom line so far so good here on this wednesday before thanksgiving. sunday is going to be a real test. you guys. that's the record breaker day. certainly at airports. but also they're expecting on the nation's highways back to you. yeah i mean it's really really filling up even in like the three minutes you've done that piece. all right tom, we'll check back with you in a bit. thank you. all right, let's go from the airports to the highways now set to be packed as well with more drivers hitting the road for the thanksgiving holiday than ever before. nbc's sam brock is along that busy new jersey turnpike with that part of the story, including some good news for your budget if you're driving.
7:08 am
sam, how's it looking so far where you are? yes, so far, so good. or so far pretty good, i should say, craig, but happy early thanksgiving with a side of traffic because the projections are 71.7 million people for the holiday. that's about a million more than last year. that would constitute a record. when you talk about some of the largest metropolitan areas in the country, craig, they're expected to see double their normal traffic levels. we're talking about new york, boston and d.c. on the east coast. san francisco, seattle and los angeles on the west coast. so really across the country, interstates expected to be packed. the good news that you mentioned are the gas price, $3.25 a gallon nationally was last year. fast forward to this year. it's now about 307 a gallon. it will be a little bit higher than that and higher cost of living states like new york and california. but you are definitely going to be saving money on your commute this time around. all right, got some good news there. any last minute tips, sam, before folks might head out the door? so the most
7:09 am
important tip that i can give you, as we're trying to be safe this holiday season. check your tires ahead of time. craig. you may not realize this, but a good rule of thumb for every ten degrees of temperature drop is one psi, the air condenses in your tires. so check. especially with this wintry weather coming and hitting today and tomorrow in the northeast and the midwest. check your tank and your battery drain. batteries can be one of the biggest issues that you see. not filling up enough oil in your tank as well. bring healthy snacks. sugar is a short term fix, but what you really want is protein. beef jerky, trail mix, protein bars and stay alert. chew gum, sit up straight and switch drivers every few hours. and also good road trip music, right? we're at the jon jon bon jovi service area here. is there a better road trip? there you go. back then bon jovi there you go. new jersey in the house, my friend. got to have the playlist. sam brock for us there along the turnpike. thank you sam, i like that. a little bon jovi in the car. all right, mr. roker is tracking this last piece of the puzzle. the weather. how's it looking? well, not great, but
7:10 am
could be a lot worse. good morning, everybody. as you can see on the radar, satellite imagery, we do have snow right now impacting the rockies. we've also got some snow and wet weather making its way through the midsection of the country. so this storm is going to race from the rockies into the midwest today. rain will start intensifying from saint louis, indianapolis, on into pittsburgh for today. airport impacts denver, kansas city, saint louis some slowdowns at nashville, dallas, houston and austin. and then we're looking at the roads i-80, i-64, i-75, all going to be impacted by rain, snow around i-25 and i-70 in the rockies. then tomorrow, thanksgiving day, heavy rain moves to the east coast. now, the good news is not a lot of wind in the morning, but by the afternoon, airports are going to be a mess. snow around the great lakes, all the way into new england. i-95, i-8, i-87, i-81, i-95 all going to be impacted by rain friday. a lake effect snow event starts up. we could be talking upwards of
7:11 am
three feet of snow. sunny skies through texas, lunch, lots of sunshine along the eastern seaboard, then sunday the cold continues. this is going to be some of the coldest air of the season, but in the meantime, lake effect snow will be a big problem. and as far as the airports are concerned, detroit, chicago all may see some problems. east coast looks pretty good, as does the west coast guys, so that travel on sunday should be okay at least as far as the road and the airports. all right. thanks, al. thanks, buddy. we'll come back to you in just a few moments. meanwhile, breaking overnight, a long sought ceasefire brokered by the u.s. is now in effect between israel and hezbollah. it's a major step toward ending the worst fighting in the middle east in decades. but a lot of questions still remain over what happens next in gaza and the fate of those hostages who have been captive, held captive for more than a year now. nbc's chief international correspondent, keir simmons, is in that region for us with the very latest. keir good morning. hey craig. good morning to you.
7:12 am
so far this ceasefire appears to be holding and it's earning praise from u.s. allies and from iran. but there are critics too, including israeli families who live along that border in the north and say they don't yet feel safe to return home. at 4 a.m. in lebanon, guns were being fired, but this time in celebration as a ceasefire finally took hold. later lines of cars stacked with mattresses returned to southern lebanon. families who had fled the violence finally able to go home. peace is possible. president biden, with welcome news ahead of thanksgiving after thousands displaced on both sides of the border amid the deadliest war in decades. this is designed to be a permanent cessation of hostilities. while overnight, an israeli strike in syria near a border crossing with lebanon underscoring prime minister netanyahu's vow not to let hezbollah rearm. netanyahu
7:13 am
saying last night if hezbollah violates the agreement and tries to rearm itself, we will attack. but the vote in favor of a ceasefire by the israeli cabinet being called a serious mistake by right wing members of the government. israel will withdraw from lebanon over 60 days, replaced by un peacekeepers and the lebanese national army, who failed to prevent hezbollah firing rockets in the past, while hezbollah would retreat north of the litani river. a coalition of countries will monitor the cease fire, including france, but no u.s. forces on the ground. it will be a fragile truce. macy netanyahu warning the duration of the ceasefire depends on what happens in lebanon. an israeli offensive that saw bombs in pages. the assassination of hezbollah's leader, hassan nasrallah, and thousands dead. israel still finding targets on
7:14 am
the last day in beirut and in the south, with hezbollah firing rockets across the border and in the south. news this morning of fresh strikes in gaza, where around 100 hostages, including americans, are still held by hamas. that war is not over. so, as you point out here, this fragile peace deal now in place, but this is going to be yet another year, another holiday season that the hostages are still not home with their families. where do things stand on a deal for their release? what more can you tell us about that? well, that's right, craig. here's what prime minister netanyahu is saying. he's saying he hopes this deal will isolate hamas and lead to a wider peace deal, including the release of those hostages. president biden is saying in that speech in the rose garden. hamas now has a choice to make. the only way out is to release the hostages, including the american citizens. now, craig, some of those hostage families have been critical of that deal. president biden, promising, though, to do
7:15 am
all he can in the coming weeks to push for their release. craig. keir simmons for us there. keir. thank you. now to new developments in the president elect trump's transition. another battle over immigration is taking shape, with the incoming border czar touting a plan for mass deportations and some state and local officials already signaling that they will push back. we're also learning more about the president elect's plan to impose new tariffs on imported goods, sparking fears of a possible trade war. nbc's senior white house correspondent gabe gutierrez, has the latest. hey, gabe. good morning. hey there hoda. good morning, president elect trump's transition team just agreed to a memorandum of understanding with the biden white house, allowing the two sides to formally begin the transition of power. three trump allies also tell nbc news the president elect is expected to sign up to five executive orders aimed at dealing with immigration alone as soon as he's sworn in. while touring texas president elect trump's
7:16 am
new borders are with a warning for anyone planning to stand in the way of the incoming administration's mass deportation plan. don't cross that line. it's a felony to knowingly harbor and conceal an illegal alien immigration authorities. it comes as the l.a. city council just adopted a sanctuary city ordinance that prohibits the use of local resources for immigration enforcement. denver's democratic mayor threatened to post local police at the county line to block federal immigration officers before backtracking. we have no plan to do that, and we really hope that we don't ever have to do that. a major question now how immigration and customs enforcement or ice will get the manpower to carry out more deportations. do you believe that local authorities should help enforce federal immigration laws? oh, absolutely. i think we have to. the sheriff's office in harford county, maryland, is one of dozens of agencies across 21 states that are part of an ice program that allows the feds to delegate specialized immigration functions to state and local law enforcement inside jails.
7:17 am
there's also new fallout from a brewing trade war. the president elect planning a 10% added tariff on china and 25% tariffs on anything imported from mexico and canada. trump, suggesting the plan is designed to punish those countries for the dangerous drug fentanyl entering the u.s, which they dispute. but because tariffs are a tax on what other countries send here and u.s. companies pay that cost, many economists warn that american consumers will be stuck with the bill. so what could get more expensive? more than $1.3 trillion worth of goods came from all three countries last year, including everything from fresh produce to cars and electronics. mexico's president is now previewing possible retaliatory tariffs if the president elect follows through. while canada's prime minister says he's spoken with trump, we talked about some of the challenges that we can work on together. chinese state media is warning against what it calls a mutually destructive tariff war.
7:18 am
trump's proposal could also blow up the trade agreement he himself helped negotiate with canada and mexico in his first term, and it could be challenged in court. hoda. all right. gabe gutierrez there at the white house. gabe. thank you. meanwhile, labor organizers say thousands of amazon workers in more than 20 countries are set to protest on black friday and cyber monday. the protests on two of the busiest shopping days of the year are planned for here in the united states, across europe and in japan, brazil and several other countries as well. organizers say they are demanding that amazon treat its workers fairly and respect their rights. amazon responded, saying in part, the company remains, quote, proud of the competitive pay and comprehensive benefits it offers employees. all right, we got more to get to, including a video from after sunday's kansas city chiefs game that's really gone viral. it shows one of the chiefs defensive linemen making the most important catch in the nfl this week. take a look. so there's an excited

airports across the country has officials concerned and empty handed drivers distraught as the thanksgiving travel rush kicks into high gear. authorities are warning travelers who are leaving their vehicles behind at airports nationwide to take extra precautions. it's extremely easy to steal a car at the world's busiest airport in atlanta, police are using motorcycle patrols, added cameras and new fencing to deter crime across its 30,000 parking spaces after more than 300 cars were stolen there. this year, over three times as many as last year. suspects can program key fobs to vehicles, and that has gotten us here, where we are no. reprogramed key fobs are not just an issue in atlanta. more than 50 vehicles were stolen at the airport in dallas fort worth. police say a car theft ring targeted airports across multiple states, with authorities arresting the alleged ringleader last month,

thieves of all kinds and criminals target people at a higher volume during the holidays in the new york city area, port authority's chief security officer greg erie calling the thefts an increasingly lucrative organized crime issue. they're doing it for the increasingly high resale value on these vehicles, and the fact that they can get them out of the country and sell them overseas. returning from a work trip last month, katie and her husband were devastated to find their car missing at the columbus international airport in complete disbelief that we parked attached to an airport and came out in our car was gone. we just assumed it was more safe and secure in in that type of an environment. police later found it abandoned and completely stripped. i'm hoping that the airports will beef up their security so that you know, we can travel and come back and have your car there. so what can you do to protect your car? i have an alarm on my car. i just make sure it's locked and i

bring my keys with me. on top of that, experts say make sure to park in well-lit areas and consider additional security measures like a tracking system or a steering wheel lock, to steer clear of any unwanted surprises this holiday season. emily are there certain cars that are more targeted than others? so it's a good question. of course, the luxury brands are targeted for their higher resale value, but it is other models to take a look at this data. kia and hyundai models experienced the highest rates of theft last year, with the hyundai elantra and sonata, along with the kia optima ranked as the top three most stolen cars. now, here at newark, officials are hoping that increasing police patrols throughout their garages, along with an embrace of technology like license plate readers, will help cut back on crime in this very busy time, guys. absolutely. all right. thank you. emily. just ahead, a remarkable new honor for one of our favorites around here, country music icon dolly parton. wait until you hear the new title that dahle just dolly just holds. but first, the buzz over

everybody. thanks for starting your wednesday with us. can we just talk about this crowd that is out here? it is bumping. it's on fire. people are ready for the parade. savannah is enjoying just one day off because we got parade duty tomorrow. looking forward to it. it's going to be fun outside. we've got a whole bunch of surprises outside, so get ready for some fun. let's get us right to our news at 8:00, guys. beginning with, of course, that thanksgiving travel rush. it's amping up this morning. a record number of people are taking to the skies and hitting the roads. and a major storm is on the move. for more on that, we're going to get to alan in just a second. but first, nbc's tom costello is watching the nation's roadways and airports for us. hey, tom. morning. here's the good news, hoda. you may remember an hour ago we had just absolutely very long lines here at the airport that was the morning push the bank. and now it started to die down. but things are really moving. and that's nationwide. i just checked we have minimal delays, minimal cancellations. we're talking 400 delays or so.
8:04 am
not bad for the whole country. only about 20 cancellations. things are moving. the faa has opened up military airspace along the east coast and the gulf of mexico. also put a pause on rocket launches in florida by opening up that airspace. they're hoping things will continue to move along very nicely today and over the next few days as well. we're talking 3 million passengers moving through tsa checkpoints every day. almost that number today, certainly that number on sunday, 50,000 flights today alone. very, very busy airspace. let's talk about the roads. very busy on the nation's roads. we're talking 71.1. make that 71.7 million people hitting the roads. that's where most people that's how most people are traveling, of course, and they're trying to get out ahead of the storm that's moving in. we're going to be watching that closely because on sunday, of course, the big return date, airports and the roadways are going to be very, very busy. the
8:05 am
question is, of course, whether people who are traveling today and on sunday are they going to miss the weather? in other words, they're already at grandmother's house and therefore will miss the weather. we'll leave that to mr. roker to explain. but at the moment here and nationally, airports are looking pretty good. hoda. all right, tom costello, some good news there for us. thank you. all right. tom teed us up perfectly. we looked at the airports. we looked at the roadways. let's look at the weather, mr. roker. all right, guys, good morning and good morning to you. and we've got right now a major snowstorm going on in the rockies. so we're worried about i-80 there here in the east. not too bad now. but that's going to change quickly as this storm moves out of the rockies, heads into the midwest with intensifying rain. so for today, we're looking at airport delays possible. denver, kansas city, saint louis, minor delays, nashville down to houston and the roads, i-64, i-75, i-80 all due to rain out in the rockies. they're going to be looking at that as well. thanksgiving day a lot of wet weather up and down the eastern seaboard. snow back through upstate new york into the into the new england area. gusty
8:06 am
winds. the roads will be a big problem friday. not so bad. lake effect snow. that's going to be a little rough. bitterly cold air in the plains. and then on sunday again, things relatively calm except right around the great lakes where we could see some lake effect snow problems causing road delays and airport delays. guys. all right. thank you, al. now to a terrifying incident at an amusement park in arizona. a man seen climbing out of a roller coaster moments before it was about to drop. nbc's liz croix spoke to him and has more on what happened. good morning to you. hey, sheinelle. good morning. this is truly a nightmare scenario for anyone on a roller coaster. the man tells me, right as they were nearing the top of the ride before the drop, he heard a click and realized his lap bar unlatched. he had moments to decide what to do and he decided to climb out. it's a shocking moment at an amusement park in phoenix. this video showing a rider climbing out of a moving roller coaster just as it's about to drop.
8:07 am
there's a scary moment. the person in the video, a man named ricky who didn't want to use his last name but told us he was at the park with his family when they got on the double looping roller coaster called desert storm. he says the person operating it didn't check the lap bars to make sure they were fully secure before starting the ride. and he says as they were making their ascent, his unlatched. we were right about to the top when that happened, so i had a split decision to either decide to stay on the roller coaster and hope i stay in or get out. ricky chose the latter, hopping out of his seat and onto a catwalk, where he says he then climbed down stairs to safety. you're lucky that you were able to think on your feet that quickly. yeah, i'm thankful that it was me, because if it was one of the 10 or 11 year olds that were going through that, i don't know that they would have jumped out of a moving roller coaster to save themselves. the incident happening at the castles and coasters amusement park, where three years ago, first responders had to help rescue 22
8:08 am
people who got stuck on that same ride. nbc news has reached out to the park for comment, but not heard back. recently, there have been other roller coaster scares nationwide, including earlier this month at knott's berry farm in southern california when a ride malfunctioned, leaving riders stranded mid-air for two hours. the park said they safely evacuated all the guests and are now investigating. as for ricky, he says he hopes his close call helps bolster roller coaster safety. luckily, i'm here to tell my story and the only thing that i can do is just try to spread awareness. now. arizona does not have a state agency that regulates amusement parks, although state law does require annual inspections. again, the park has not responded to ricky's claims. he says he's just thankful to the stranger who happened to capture that video of him. he hopes it leads to change and as he said, grateful it was him and that seat, and not one of the children who were also on the ride at the time. chanel. that is so scary. you automatically think what you would do. yeah. i don't know if i would have
8:09 am
thought to jump out. well, the fact that he was like the right spot. there was a catwalk. he said he could walk down the stairs, but still. that was quick thinking. thank you. liz. liz. thanks, liz. all right. just ahead. would you be upset at very cheap tickets to see the final shows of taylor swift's eras tour? how about, like, 20 bucks or less? carson's going to explain in pop star. also, with just one day to go from food prep to table decor, chef aaron french from the famed lost kitchen, she's here in studio to help answer your top questions about thanksgiving. we'll do that right after this. but first, these messages. looking for a board for my daughter. amex founded small business saturday to make an impact. because for every dollar you spend at a small business, an average of $0.68 goes into making your community better. so on small business saturday, november 30th, shop small.

8:14 am
aaron. the response was insane. so we're going to break it down into three categories. we're going to do the pregame prep, turkey tips, and delicious desserts. so let's start up here okay aaron. all right. so there are one of our viewer questions is what can i do before. how do i prep. what's the right thing. i'll tell you this. it's owning my own restaurant. you know, if you're throwing a big dinner, it's all in the prep. and you can do 90% of your thanksgiving dinner ahead of time. so start your potatoes a couple of days ahead, soak them so the starch comes out. you can make that puree. make all of your purees days in advance. you warm them. we only have today one day. can we still do it in one day? yes, you can and you can make even make homemade cranberry sauce the day before. so you're peeling and you're cutting and you're just soaking and then you're leaving and that's. and then you prepare them the day of the day before or the day before mashed potatoes the day before. put them in the fridge. yeah. warm them up in a double. warm them up. all right. let's do a lot of people want to know about herbs. what's the best way that we can? you know, fill our faces
8:15 am
with if you want to make your table look really beautiful, you don't have to go crazy. you could just have little vases. you can stuff them with herbs. it's so simple. it's really inexpensive. you've got time. there's a little bit of rosemary and sage. put some candles around your table, make it feel personal and like this is not hard. and so look at that. that's like beautiful for the table. yeah. and you also usually have so many of those leftover from cooking. you just throw them away. and it kind of brings everything together on the table. so all right we were just talking about this during the commercial break when we were kids. the turkey i'm not naming names, but sometimes would be a little drier than we would like. what's the key to a juicy bird? aaron french okay, for me, it's all about the brine. and if my dear friend ina garten is watching right now, she's really upset about what i'm about to say because i believe in a wet brine. wet brine. ina is all about the dry brine. we beg to differ on the brine, but we do come together on the brine. so it's all about the brine. so a wet brine, you get your water boiling. we've got juniper berries. we've got time, we've got rosemary, whatever you like. it's really
8:16 am
just salt, sugar, boiling water. let it cool. put it over your turkey, let it sit for 24 hours. at least 24 hours, 24 hours. pull it out and let the turkey sit and dry. also, let your turkey come to room temperature before you put it in the oven. what does that do? oh, that's it'll seize up if you're putting a cold bird in a hot oven. so leave it out first. that's a good tip. that's a really good tip. you leave it out. a number of folks who emailed in, they said that they, you know, love thanksgiving, but they get tired of having the same old dishes. they wanted something nontraditional. just check your email. that's that's what i was told. wow. so an untraditional side dish. erik shoji. okay. so i like this carrot salad that we make that's from our cookbook. so it's just carrots. it's got some marinated apricots. so you get your fruit a little bit of nuts. there's some pistachio, there's fresh mint, a little bit of cinnamon and so you just make you can make this all kind of ahead and then you just pour the dressing over. there's a little bit of ginger in it and rose water. so there's some interesting flavors. you've got some really interesting flavors.
8:17 am
and then you toss it together and you have comforting flavors that feel like thanksgiving and but still feeling a little bit different. and you still have the colors of thanksgiving to make that you have a really nice side dish. you know, aaron carson's been reading a lot of these. i was up late last night reading these emails as well, and a lot of the viewers say if they do have some time and they want to make a pie crust from scratch, can you walk us through that? it's so easy. i mean, literally just a couple of ingredients. but my big trick is that you have to have everything very super cold. so ice water and i like to take frozen butter right from the freezer. and i use a box grater. wait, what? yes. so then you get these little flecks, flecks of butter, because the flecks of butter are going to make your pie crust flaky. and i also like to use a metal pie tin because that's going to make a flakier crust. so where are you putting those flecks of. so you put it right into the into your food processor. and i like to put my food processor bowl in the freezer with the flour. and then you put in the cold butter, you keep everything very cold. you add in your ice water, you just pulse it and you have the easiest people by the pie crust.
8:18 am
i think it's impossible to make, but yeah, two seconds. make it days in advance to you can do that. so here we're talking about i think leftovers. oh this is what you made for us yesterday. this is like the next day i love random things. what did you make. so this is kind of using all of the leftovers. you're going to have your leftover potatoes. you've got your leftover turkey. so you can start layering that. so the next day just take those. you could have some cranberry sauce or i like to saute some grapes just because it has a little bit of extra flavor you see those in. so i saute it with a little olive oil and a little bit of time. and that yesterday was orange zest. orange zest. yummy. so do this. top it with more potatoes because you know you're going to have a lot of leftovers. sprinkle it with some of the crispy shallots. throw it in the oven. try that. serve it with a side salad a couple days after thanksgiving. so good good. you won't be bored. your tastebuds will not be bored originally. all right. what's going on down here? so we've got we've got the cocktails. i thought we had a cocktail. this is a cocktail situation. so it is what you want to do. you'll see. we have. i'm not about
8:19 am
making fancy cocktails. right. really simple. genius. you go to your grandmother's house and you would have like that old fashioned, like ginger ale and a little bit of sherbert. well, this is sorbet with a little bit of sparkling wine. so a scoop of sorbet and then so clever, it'll kind of melt in. it's going to be delicious. so you get a little bit of that. you can, you can use a spoon or you can just drink it. you know what, by the way, for folks who might be a little lactose intolerant, perfect. this is yeah. it's perfect. cheers to that. that is good. and what's your final tip right here? the final tip is my favorite pie of all time. my mother made this my grandmother made this. it's a pumpkin pie. so a little lighter than that. typical really thick pumpkin pie. you've had a big meal. you don't need a big pie. you want this light, fluffy, almost like pumpkin mousse. you're just going to freak out once you have this. how do you air it out? how do you turn it into that mousse? you don't even have to bake this one. what? it's a no bake like a no bake pie. you make a mousse, egg whites, whipped cream. okay. pumpkin pie. that much? that's delicious. cinnamon. yes. so
8:20 am
good. so, aaron french of you to make it that good. and you make it a day or two in advance. you turn something i hate into something i love. so, aaron french, what is going on at the lost kitchen during the season? what do you guys do? we are so busy right now. we have our online shop which is just filled with so many beautiful kitchen gifts and home gifts. we have our retail shop which we're opening day after thanksgiving, so we open the mill for everyone to come and see and enjoy. but you guys do huge online business because no one can get there physically. it's like impossible to get to your place. i bet you just kill it online. that's the thing. we can send anything across the entire country. and do you still have people write a postcard in? if they want a reservation? oh yeah. it's the best thing in the whole world. your postcard yet? i know i'm going to send you one. i'll have some time. that's no good. that's going to be good. i got you, aaron. she's going to apply to work there. and thank you. you can find more of these delicious recipes and answers to your thanksgiving meal dilemmas on our website. the butterball hotline. in the 80s, we used to call that my mom would call it. it still exists. it does. okay. oh yeah. no, it still exists. now you have aaron french helping you out. just the qr code there so you can check that
