you've likely heard of summer learning loss. it happens when kids forget some of what they have learned during the school year because of the long summer break. experts say it can also happen during winter break. good news, though, there are ways to prevent it. joining us is lauren thomas who is the director for the virtual learning division at pierceson virtual schools. thank you for being with us. let's start with this idea of christmas break is short. kids don't have a lot of time to be kids. let them relax. how worried should parent and caretakers be about the possibility of learning loss during winter break? >> good question. so winter break is much shorter than summer break. so i think the impact of long-term learning loss is more minimal. however, any time a child is away from that structured setting of practice and repetition, you can expect some decline, so parents should be aware of that. but you can also incorporate

learning into your daily activities maybe with your family and new traditions that will curb that loss. >> how do you suggest parents go about incorporating learning within the daily activities but not overburden the kids or make the whole break feel like work? >> two thoughts. it needs to be intentional and second it needs to be fun. for example, i've cooked with my chirp and have them calculate everything. doubling and halving the recipe and new ways thinking about the recipe, for example. or they brought home a reading assignment and trying to get involved in that. family game night if you're looking at math skills or vocabulary. a lot of games out there that work. it's intentional and trying to incorporate fun. >> if your children was struggling prior to the semester before the break, is this an opportunity to speed up and get back on track and how can you maximize this time to make up
12:49 pm
for lost ground? >> i do believe that rest and relaxation and rejuvenation is very important but there are three things you could do. one is pick a focus. sometimes that comes home by a report card or through a teacher or sometimes just talking with your child and what to focus on. make it fun. games, apps, flashcards, story telling is fun and do it with them. celebrate progress and reward effort. you want them to have fun on the holiday along with you but maximize their time. >> if there is somebody anxiety about the return to school at the end of winter break and i know it's better not to talk about that now, what do you say? what conversations should you be having with your kids and how do you make sure that is easy to go back to school at the ends of the break? >> a great question. i think spending quality time with your child so they feel very saturated and very rested and ready to go back. so that is not about time all the time. it's really about what you do to
