three recent high school grads who were killed in a fiery crash. plus, a thanksgiving tradition returns the way glide memorial is working to help move the bay area forward and feed those in need for the holiday. this is today in the bay. good thursday morning and happy thanksgiving. i'm kira clapper in for laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. so let's get this thanksgiving started with a look at that forecast for you. forecaster cinthia pimentel has a look at a cold start for us. definitely. we are looking at a frost advisory this morning until nine. areas shaded in blue. so that includes the north bay the east bay hills and down into parts of the foothills down here in san jose. so i want you to lay up as you get the day started and protect those, especially important for you. let's look at some of the coldest numbers on the map. boulder creek not included in this frost advisory, but 29 degrees on this thanksgiving morning. 31 in danville. and we go into the low 30s up there in
5:02 am
the north bay. 33 in sonoma. aside from getting the day started on a cold note. maybe you're trying to get to that thanksgiving destination. i want you to be careful for that dense fog that we're seeing through the valleys, including parts of the delta here for solano county. that will be with us until 11:00 this morning. we start to clear things out so that includes areas up to chico as well. something that i want you to be careful of. i want you to get to that thanksgiving dinner. now let's go out to the roadways. there is something that i'm watching here. and what would normally back up traffic up there in the east bay. we are looking at westbound 80 around cutting. so around the home depot it is in the clearing stages. there were a couple of cars involved in this. some injuries. but aside from this we are looking at the lanes opening back up some of the bay area transits are also running on a holiday or reduced schedule, so watch for bart. the golden gate ferry is not running. the transit is on a weekend schedule. there's no service for ace trains. guys, back toou. all right. thanks, cynthia. well, new details in the tragic

crash involving a tesla cybertruck in piedmont. city leaders encouraging mourners to gather later today. this is ahead of the piedmont turkey trot. to remember those three people who died. now, we follow this story all morning long. yesterday here on today in the bay. that's when a tesla truck crashed into a retaining wall and burst into flames. we've now learned that the three people who died all graduated just last year from piedmont high school and were all home for the holidays. one friend of the victims, in a separate car, managed to pull someone from the burning vehicle with serious injuries. a former teacher, as you can imagine, just heartbroken. this shouldn't happen to any kids. when you know them. just makes it worse. now the leaders there in the city are hoping that the turkey trot this morning allows people to gather and grieve. the mayor also plans to attend. it will include a moment of silence. as for the exact cause of this crash that is still under

investigation, but speed right now is being looked at as a likely factor. new repercussions this morning. in the controversy surrounding the san jose state women's volleyball team, boise state is now backing out of tomorrow's mountain west tournament semifinal in protest against the spartans alleged transgender player. it follows other tumultuous events for the team this past week. a judge denied efforts to stop that player from playing in the tournament. boise state had previously forfeited its two regular season games against the spartans. it's not clear if the university or the volleyball team called for this semifinal withdrawal, but with boise state out, the spartans now move directly into saturday's championship game. and there is some good news in this follow up for you on this thanksgiving morning. oneouth bay family is no doubt thankful for a local nonprofit group. their car was targeted by thieves on monday.
5:05 am
the crooks stole a customized wheelchair used by a teenage boy with cerebral palsy. the replacement cost would have been several thousand dollars, but volunteers heard the story. volunteers with the wheelchair foundation delivered the boy a new chair just in time for thanksgiving. police, meanwhile, have not made any arrests. now to an annual thanksgiving tradition in san francisco. it is back once again. glide memorial church's thanksgiving meal and celebration will feed thousands of people once again today. yeah, today in the bay's ginger conejero saab is live for us over at glad this morning and glide this morning. excuse me, but a lot of people are glad to be there because this is truly a big tradition there. ginger. and very much so dear to their hearts. this year as well. that's right. good morning and happy thanksgiving, marcus and kyra. you know, today thanksgiving is especially a memorable one or a special one here for the glide community.
5:06 am
today is the first thanksgiving after the passing of reverend cecil williams. and you can see his picture there just behind us. he passed away earlier this year. the charismatic leader here at glide memorial. he left an example and a legacy that so many are thankful for today and every day. reverend williams, as i mentioned, passed away in may. his life was celebrated and honored by the community that he served. and one of the things that reverend williams preached was to be, quote, radically inclusive. he believed that inclusivity would create a community to support and care for those who are experiencing poverty, homelessness, addiction and those who longed for acceptance. and to this day, glide is that place. on days like today, we're we're, you know, getting ready to serve the community here. we're at the breakfast room here. this is it's still quiet, obviously. it's about 5 a.m. some of the volunteers are going to trickle in at about 530. there are some people here, but this is going
5:07 am
to be filled with people. this will be for seniors who are enjoying the thanksgiving meal. their breakfast later this morning. those who have disabilities downstairs, they changed it up a little bit this year. that is where the turkey and ham carving will happen. that starts. that first shift starts at six this morning. there's also breakfast at 730 that ends at nine. other things that glide is offering this morning, like a vaccination clinic. that is something that they've continued to do throughout the years that will begin at eight. and of course, so many are looking forward to that thanksgiving celebration that will start at glide memorial church at 10 a.m. now, volunteers are packing hundreds of meals to also be distributed in different neighborhoods in san francisco. another key piece to today's thanksgiving celebration. i know we're going to be talking to some of the volunteers, some of the people who have dedicated their lives to the mission of glide, and it's especially memorable and meaningful this thanksgiving with reverend cecil williams there looking over our shoulders
5:08 am
and hopefully smiling from where he is. yeah, guys, back to you. ginger, thanks so much. happy thanksgiving. well, along with turkey football and black friday shping, two other traditions on thanksgiving happening right he on nbc bay area today, the macy's thanksgiving day parade and the national dog show. okay, now, compared to the parades 98 years, the dog show a mere pup at 23. but you know what? it's really carved its own turkey day niche earlier this week onoday in the bay, we actually got a chance to speak with the two co-hosts about the show and what we all can expect. family show. it's a great family topic. everybody's got their family dog and you can watch the 23rd national dog show right here on nbc bay area. all of that action begins at noon. all right. now to a live look at palisades tahoe, one of the many sierra resorts benefiting from all this recent snow. take a look at those flurries right now. palisades already reporting close to three feet of snow at
5:09 am
the base. a few resorts have yet to open, but if you're still thinking about a late run to tahoe, driving conditions should be improved from just a few days ago. let's turn to cinthia pimentel. cynthia has the long weekend shaping up. it's looking great. i mean, just last week we were talking about all of that rain that was dumping across the state. not now. we are looking at a gorgeous weekend outlook in tahoe right now though. 14 degrees. but it is just a stunning live shot. you can actually see some of the stars up there in the ridge tops as we take it on through the weekend. there's no alerts for me to tell you about, so go ahead, get going. we are going to be chilly though. 40s continue through our daytime highs. sunny skies. not a bad idea to bring some sunscreen in. just protect that face of yours. now, coming back here into the bay area. my full forecast coming up in just a little bit. we, of course, are starting off with a cold morning. i told you about the dense fog through the valley later on this afternoon, though if you have plans outdoors in
5:10 am
stores, whatever they may be should be a nice one to celebrate with friends and family and guess what? the weekend here also stays gorgeous. so i like my 7-day forecast. i think you will too. back to you. i like the sound of that. sounds good. cynthia. thanks. 509 for you this morning. ensuring a good deal the next time you order food on your phone. so ahead this morning on today in the bay, we're going to talk about the changes doordash is making for customers this holiday season. what's open? what's closed. and australia passing an amazing historic law. and do you have questions when it comes to cooking your turkey? the hotline you can call today to get free advice. keep it here. you're watching today in the bay

5:13 am
take a look at our planner up there in napa for the locals and the family that's coming into town. we are starting this morning in the 30s. that frost advisory goes up until nine. from then, we should start to gradually warm up and see lots of sunshine for this afternoon. highs there will be in the 60s. then once we get ready for dinner, coming back down into the 40s. so bundle up. i have a look at the rest of our thanksgiving outlook. bay area wide coming up. well good morning. very happy thanksgiving thursday to you. now you're going to be looking behind me saying there are no numbers. stock market closed today half day tomorrow. so i will take this opportunity to remind you turkeys take a long time to defrost. it's a personal experience. if you're planning
5:14 am
to defrost a frozen bird in cold water. the usda says a 16 pound turkey, which is average size, will take eight hours. add to that about 3 to 4 hours of cooking and resting. and if you start now, you are eating at 3 or 4 in the afternoon. do not defrost in warm water. you will eat sooner, but wish you hadn't. if you do need something last minute, safeway will be open until six at most locations. walgreens that are normally open 24 hours will stay open. others will be closed. cvs shortened hours. starbucks whole foods says it depends on the location closed. our target, walmart, trader joe's, costco hardly a complete list, but you get the idea where you can go to get that stick of butter. some historic news out of australia this morning. the country has passed a law banning anyone under 16 from using social media. everything from facebook to reddit to snapchat. off limits. the legislation will not take effect for a year as lawmakers work out how to
5:15 am
implement it. it's a first in the world law. the social network blue sky says it's adding content monitors as fast as it can, as usership skyrockets, blue sky looks and feels exactly like the old twitter. before elon musk bought it and changed it to x power users. people with tens of thousands of followers who moved to blue sky say they like it a lot better. i have 90 odd thousand on twitter, but even as it grew, i wasn't getting that much engagement with blue sky. when i had five, i had like 60 something thousand. now, even when i had 5000 people, it was more lively because the anti bot stuff is stronger. but also people are more engaged. people want to be there. twitter, like many social networks and i think blue sky will become this one day as well, is a place they feel they have to be. but blue sky feels more fun, at least for now. meantime, a new study of online influencers show most of them do not double check their facts before they post. unesco, the united nations education
5:16 am
arm, says six out of ten content creators pass along news and other information to their followers that they heard about, but they never actually researched. one thing you can depend on from mainstream media is much critic criticism. as we get, is we are going to hear about something and then track it down to its source and speak to that person. yes. yep. despite what other people might think. right? yeah. scott. thank you. you bet. 515 right now. doordash. the palo alto company. that's been delivering food to your doorstep for 12 years now is delivering a new feature to help move the bay area forward through the holidays. so doordash will deliver meals or groceries to addresses of your choice within an hour. this is whether you order on the spot or scheduled delivery ahead of tim. but because they offer so many different categories, they now have an enhanced search tool. this is to help you find what you need. and for the lowest price, we actually have beauty and home goods, flowers, pet
5:17 am
supplies. to your point, food and groceries. all the above. which makes it a little bit hard for it to kind of navigate. and one of my favorite things that we have to make it easier for people this year is we have a new search engine which allows you to type an item, and then it's going to tell you every store that item is in, and the lowest price available that's located near that address. saving a buck. all right. doordash is also getting in on the black friday deals, offering money off certain orders and additional discountsts for selt restaurants, stores and even gift cards. doordash will also now allow snap and ept recipients to use those benefits in order to save the expensive trip to the store. if this is your first time hosting thanksgiving, marcus washington and you need some help, of course you can look it up online. but did you know you can also call an expert for help? the butterball turkey talk-line is back open for its 43rd season. we spoke to one of their experts who reminds us, don't
5:18 am
wait until the last minute to thaw your turkey. it they say, okay, this is differing information from the usda, but they say it takes 24 hours to thaw 4 pounds of frozen bird, which means a 20 pound turkey can take five days to thaw. always use that meat thermometer when it comes time to cook your bird. have your meat thermometer ready because that will tell you when your turkey is actually done. 170 in the breast, 180 in the thigh. and if you're stuffing it 165 in the center. but honestly, it's so easy to do a butterball turkey that even the most inexperienced cooks can make a wonderful thanksgiving. the butterball turkey talk-line is open through. oh oh. i was not expecting that in my ear. open through christmas eve. the number is one 800 butterball. or you can text. i prefer text (844) 877-3456. i only pick up the phone if i think it's like an emergency. like, why are you calling me? is everyone safe? i just wanted to say, hey, happy
5:19 am
holidays. see you later. yeah. text. don't call. okay. text. yeah. well, we are going to just tell you the forecast. now because, cynthia, you've been working hard with that cold start to the morning, but not a wet one. not a wet one. we have clear ies throughout the bay. so that allows the earth to cool. and those overnight hours we might even dip a few more degrees as we get closer to sunrise. i've been looking at santa rosa. there is some areas of fog there through the north bay. low 30s continuing througuh pleasant as well, but we get into some 40s as we move up the peninsula. san carlos and 40 degrees to start our day down here in san jose. so that means bundle up if you're heading for any turkey trots. kudos to you and not my thing. we are looking at 30s and 40s through 7 a.m. and then getting more of that sunshine and temperatures warming up as we go on into noo, people rushing to the grocery stores. not bad. at least there is no rain. we go on into the
5:20 am
afternoon and it is just lovely. something to be grateful for later on. today will be that nice and dry. thanksgiving forecast seconds and 60s bay area wide. we'll keep it at 59 out towards the beach. half moon bay. if you want to get a little walk in 62 san jose and 59 out in concord, it is a chilly and soggy start though, and evening for thanksgiving. if you have any late minute travel plans heading east, there are some showers that we're watching through new york city, even some snow, and through parts of d.c. also looking like a soggy one. for this thursday, we are going to continue that frost advisory here in the bay area for tomorrow. so bundle up even later tonight. you'll feel that chill if you're spending some time outdoors. 30s and 40s return once again. could even stay with us as we go into the weekend. now, speaking of the weekend, maybe you're coming back. you've had enough of that family time. we are looking at dry conditions as you make your way up the state, or even down the state along 99 101. the five
5:21 am
that looks clear for the weekend. maybe some stray showers that want to come up the coast. i'll be watching those here, but as we go on into early december. yes, final month of the year, it is looking like a dry start. so i mentioned that i liked my 7-day forecast. here's why we look at those sunshine icons staying with us. temperatures. not bad in our inland valleys. aside from the cold mornings, we are looking at 60s even gradually warming up as we go on into next week under all that sunshine, maybe even some mid 60s popping up in some spots, our san francisco and peninsula forecast also looks very lovely with that sunshine. staying with us for the next seven days. back to you. i'm walking on sunshine. yeah, yeah. 520 this morning. next here on today in the bay. know that if you're feeling it it is something. it's real. and we say you know your body best. so if something feels off it is two women struck with thyroid eye disease in the prime of their lives are using their experiences to raise awareness about ted and the connection to

now at 530, lacing up and hitting the pavement. the silicon valley, turkey trot is back ahead. we are live in the south bay with everything you need to know. if you're thinking about running this thanksgiving morning and the key funding, it helps deliver in the bay area. plus, speaking of tradition, the final preparations underway for this year's macy's thanksgiving day parade in new york city.

this is today in the bay. big time across the country. people watching that. but you're in the bay area watching us this morning or online somewhere else? yes, my mom in la. hi, mom. my mom in memphis. hey, mama. well, it is thursday, thanksgiving day. happy thanksgiving to you all out there. i'm marcus washington, and i'm kira klapper in for laura garcia, who's probably awake anyway. cooking right now. let's start with a look at the forecast. kari is off to. but cinthia pimentel is in and tracking what we can expect. i know once you're in morning news, you just wake up and you're ready to go. so good morning to all of our fellow users that have the morning off. it is a cold one. on this thanksgiving morning, we were talking about the silicon valley trot. there we are starting in san jose, the center of it, 40 degrees. but you go drive down into south san jose, just above freezing at 34. the foothills are included in the frost advisory until 9 a.m. other parts of the bay area, including the east bay and the north bay
5:31 am
hills, seconds and some low 40s out there towards hayward. 32in sonoma. so please bundle up and let the car run a little bit before you get in there and run some of those last minute errands. let's take a look at our planner. if you're staying down here in the south bay after the cold morning, we should start to warm up, get into some 50s and 60s by lunchtime. lots of sunshine, a few high clouds will come around here throughout the day, but no rain to rain on our thanksgiving parade here in the bay area. whether that be your running outside by your own or gathering a couple of people, we are seeing our temperatures stay in the 60s. there is lots of sunshine in that 7-day forecast. something to be grateful for. i'll be back with that in a few minutes. back to you, cynthia. thanks. we want to tell you about a bitter contract dispute. that may mean curtains for this year's popular nutcracker performances in san francisco. opening night. right now is still scheduled for
5:32 am
december 6th at the war memorial opera house in the city. but sf ballet and its union are currently at an impasse. after five months of talks, one union representative tells us most performers are considered low income in the city and they need better benefits. we've seen injury levels really grow in the past couple of years. we've seen the workers comp costs for san francisco ballet really jump up, which is not not great for the company or for the artist. in a statement, sf ballet management says our proposed salary increases for dance and stage management continue to align with those offered by our peers, including american ballet theater and new york city balle, ensuring competitiveness and fairness within the industry. we, of course, will continue to cover that story. well, it's thanksgiving, and that means turkey trot time again in san jose. thousands of runners and walkers are gathering later this
5:33 am
morning. today in the bay thom jensen is already there, so he can be first in line to start running for the 20th annual silicon valley turkey trot. hey, tom, how's it going? good morning. good. i hope you're doing well. happy thanksgiving. yeah, i'll be doing the very slow walk if i'm involved in this. no trotting on my part or running for sure. we're already seeing some of the workers and volunteers showing up here this morning. no runners yet. that's going to be a few hours from now. but a lot of volunteers involved in this event every year. and i checked the website this morning once again, this is the largest thanksgiving day race in america. more than 20,000 runners and walkers expected again this year. here in san jose, more than 26,000 volunteers have contributed to the event over the past 20 years, and more than 300,000 runners have participated. it's one of the major donors to
5:34 am
nonprofits like healthier kids foundation, second harvest, and many more food pantries in this part of the bay area. the silicon valley leadership group, foundation partners with and is sponsored by applied materials and puts on the race. it's contributed more than $13 million back to the community over the past 20 years of the turkey trot. this participation has translated to 10 million, literally over 10 million meals for those in need in our community. so you're staying in shape, you're having fun with your family, but you're making a real contribution to help. now there are five k and ten k races, but you don't have to run to participate. you can run or walk or a combination of both. there's even a kids fun run. and if you don't feel like coming down this morning, you can donate at spivey. turkey trot .com. we'll hear more from the race sponsors coming up. in a live interview at 630 this morning on today in the bay. for
5:35 am
now, we're just watching as the volunteers once again get the race started. police have arrived. they're cordoning off a lot of the streets down here, so be aware of that. if you're planning on coming in to downtown san jose. but it should be a great morning weather wise at least. clear skies. but we expect to see a lot of people. of course, with the long johns on underneath their shorts this morning because it is quite cold. i had to pull on all the winter gear. i've got my snow pants on my snow boots about four layers, and my bay fc scarf of course, to represent underneath because we got to represent the team, right? absolutely. i'm always so amazed by people who run on thanksgiving morning. my husband is one of those people, but i didn't grow up in that family. but now i'm in that family and my. so you support? yeah. i'm supportive. yes. from here. thanks, tom. happy thanksgiving. good to see you. thank you. happy thanksgiving. well, you
5:36 am
know, later this morning the annual holiday spectacle returns to new york city. that's the macy's thanksgiving day parade. yeah. today, the bay's jay gray, our favorite live in the big apple for us. hi, jay. happy thanksgiving. lots of buzz surrounding this year's parade balloons. i hear there's even a new one. absolutely. kira marcus, good morning to you. happy thanksgiving kara i'm a runner as well. i run straight from the couch to the kitchen for seconds. about midway through the thanksgiving night, i want to give you a look at what's going on. the parade has started to roll, and one of the new floats is just out and on the parade route. many mouse hard to believe many's never been a part of this parade. there you see one of the minions, stuart the minion with his banana on his way to join the parade. you've got 700 clowns that are a part of this parade. 22 floats, 11 marching bands, and then all the entertainers, all the performers from dan and shay to t-pain to
5:37 am
the temptations, kylie minogue. they'll all be performing as a part of this parade. you can see it's raining has been for a few hours and expected to rain for the duration of the parade. i'm going to tell you it hasn't slowed things down. millions lining this parade route. we got to get here at two 3245. there were already families picking out their best spot along that route. here's one thing, though. no umbrellas. so you can't bring an umbrella. you can't block people's view and all that. a lot of people wearing ponchos, raincoats, they say, hey, it's a part of what we do. it's a part of our tradition. are we traveled from across the country to be here and a little bit of rain is not going to stop that. another thing i learned this morning that i hadn't known this parade the broadcast has been the most watched broadcast on u.s. tv for the last three years, so obviously a lot of people have that as part of their tradition as well. hope you guys get done with the show. marcus kira get home, get your nice comfy place on the couch and watch the parade as well.
5:38 am
should be a lot of fun. yes, definitely. i'll be running from the couch to the kitchen just like you. j stay dry out there. we love seeing you. happy thanksgiving my friend. thank you. and don't forget you can watch the parade right here on nbc. bay area's going to start for us at 830 this morning. all right. back here at home, taking a live look over at sfo. you know, holiday travel rush, full force triple a saying about 6 million people will be flying domestically this holiday season. more than 71 million travelers will hit the roads. but all traffic might be terrible. gas prices not so much nationally. that is the national average for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is around $3.06 this week, which is $0.20 lower than it was this time last year. those prices will be higher if you are traveling on the west coast, and some spots over in the northeast. the south and great plains are already seeing prices below $3, so that would be nice. as for when to hit the
5:39 am
road, well, triple a has some advice for us. we always said the wednesday before thanksgiving is the worst day to be traveling, and then that sunday is the worst. those are still pretty bad, but now over the years, people not only have taken our advice and said, okay, i'm going to leave a d day earli or come back a day after, but also because of remote work and, and sort of this post-pandemic trend that we're seeing. more people are leaving on tuesday and also returning on monday. so triple a says that if it's possible for you and your famil, the absolute best travel day is on thanksgiving day. time now for a look at that forecast for you. the weekend weather forecaster cinthia pimentel has a look what we can expect. so airport delays how are they looking this morning? right now i think everything is pretty calm. even if we are looking at satellite and radar picking up on some of that rain and some snow showers making their way up the east coast. but so far, zero minute delays, that's a good one. we'll watch that throughout the morning. if you're heading that way or expecting a plane that's coming into the bay area. now, speaking of the bay area
5:40 am
from sfo down to mineta, everything looks good, even down into southern california. so let's take a look at our forecast across the state for today. as you make those final plans, we'll do low 60s here in san jose, 40s up there in tahoe. and just some beautiful, stunning weather through la and palm springs. if you're going down south 70 degrees and lots of sunshine. now, aside from thanksgiving, people are planning ahead for the weekend. we do have christmas in the park that officially begins tomorrow in downtown san jose, right behind our graphic we see the ferris wheel, everything getting started. it does start in the evening time, so please bundle up and bring some good walking shoes because you're going to do a lot of it as you make your way into the cesar chavez plaza, we go down into the low 50s and even even into the 40s later on at night, and we go on and carry it through. shop small saturday in san rafael and the holiday of lights, the tree there, all of those celebrations that will be in downtown starting from 12 to 6. so as we look towards the

states. you'll recall the first incoming trump administration got mired in controversy after it was discovered general mike flynn was talking to the russians. now, no allegations of wrongdoing in this phone call between trump and mexican president claudia sheinbaum. they talked about border security, though, in competing posts on social media. the two didn't seem to agree on what they had actually agreed upon. if anything, sheinbaum also had tough talk at a press conference responding to trump's call for new tariffs on mexico. she pointed out while there is a problem with drugs flowing from mexico to the united states, there's a gun problem. too many guns flowing from the united states to mexico and said mexico could very well place tariffs on american goods in response. meta. the old facebook says ceo mark zuckerberg visited trump at his mar a lago estate for dinner last night. zuckerberg, one of several ceos trying to get on trump's good side. trump, highly critical of zuckerberg after facebook kicked him off the

service. in fact, trump so disliked zuckerberg it influenced trump's proposed ban on tiktok. trump is now not in favor of a tiktok ban because it would drive traffic to facebook, trump at one point writing on social truth social rather, if you get rid of tiktok, facebook and zucker will double their business. now, he didn't use the word zuckerberg. trump used a crude yiddish word to make fun of zuckerberg's name. trump at one point also posting that teslas are prone to crash and spacex launches rockets to nowhere. now ceo tesla ceo elon musk works for trump as the head of yet to be created department of government efficiency. musk has also been posting threats online, repeating threats to arrest american mayors who oppose immigrant deportations, and this week accusing retired army colonel alexander vindman of treason. vindman that's alexander vindman, trump's

former national security council member who testified in his first impeachment trial, has committed treason, musk wrote against the united states and will pay the appropriate penalty now for someone to publicly accuse another american, particularly a military officer wounded in battle of treason is unusual at best for the ceo of tesla, who holds no position of government authority but appears to think he does well, that's very unusual, marcus. all right, scott, thank you. okay, so the holidays already the most challenging time of the year for mental health and new research shows that climate change adding another layer to distress, especially for younger americans, teenagers as young as 13 telling researchers that climate change makes them feel afraid. it's known as eco grief or climate anxiety. and for some, those feelings can be overwhelming. the national climate reporter chase kane well, he's talking to experts about ways to cope with climate emotions. if you're feeling worried, stressed, anxious or
5:49 am
even depressed because of climate change, you should know you are not alone. i've previously shared my struggle with this. i'm one of them, and it's the same for millions of other people. i mean, new research published in the lancet shows that 43% of gen z americans say climate emotions are impacting their mental health, 85% of gen z is worried, and roughly 70% of millennials, too. yeah. it's not. it's not a good feeling. and i think a lot of gen z ers are really feeling that as well, because they're thinking, well, i even have an adulthood. can i even have children like those sorts of scary things. it is a depressing thought looking ahead into the future. yeah. i mean, it's just super sad that people don't see it as something that needs to be taken care of right now. but experts say it's also important that we understand that those feelings are not a problem with us. it's quite the opposite, actually. eco anxiety as a term might make some people think of, oh, diagnosis, oh, a clinical condition. it's not. it's not in the dsm. it's not a mental

health disorder. it's a sign that we are awake and that we are connected and that we care, that we feel this form of distress. britt rae studies eco grief at stanford university and wrote a book on it called generation dread. and those hard emotions. i would argue that eco distress needs to rise to the surface and be met head on for the transformative work to begin. we won'get there by continuously feeling comfortable and pretending ourselves away from the pain, she and other experts agree that communicating how we're feeling is a great start. and if you want to do that with the help of a professional, you can search for a climate aware therapist through the climate psychology alliance. talk about it in therapy, talk about it at school, talk about it at the workplaces. and in that process, we will feel better ourselves because we'll realize we're not alone. and we will also break down the false social reality that we're the only ones and start developing more momentum. the next thing that you can do is you can be mindful. this is a good self-care practice. wait a minute, what am i thinking? what am i reflecting on? what's what is my mood? another important

piece of advice is to engage, to take action and to do that locally. that can look different for everyone. but maybe you start cleaning up a beach. volunteer for climate research at a local university or plant trees. local climate action can bring purpose and connection. it will help introduce you to other like minded people and that helps build community. local action gives me so much more hope. i don't know why. i feel like things tend to change a lot faster, and that can lead to systemic changes, which are really cool. motion is lotion. i need people to get up. i need folks to get active. that's going to release that tension. it makes me feel more purposeful in this crisis to be able to work on it day in and day out, and to really work on the thing that stresses you with others in community can be massively uplifting, even though it's still hard in los angeles, i'm national climate reporter chase kane. let's take a live look outside at bay area roadways. happening now a chp maximum
