some gorgeous weather over the next couple of days. really thankful for that. actually, we'll start to warm up as we get on into the first couple of days of december. san francisco and the peninsula. anybody visiting should also be in for a lovely treat. all right. thanks, cynthia. and we are just over an hour and a half away from the 98th edition of the macy's thanksgiving day parade. here is a look for you this morning. live. look there, 22 floats, 11 marching bands, 700 clowns and all. part of this a lot of fun. kylie minogue, dan and shay, t-pain and the temptations among those performing this year. you can watch the parade right here on nbc bay area. it starts at 830 this morning. well, look, that's what's happening today in the bay. today's show sta good thursday morning. the countdown is on. >> you know what, a little rain >> you know what, a little rain is not going to dampen this parade. it's november the 28th. good morning.

this is "today." holiday road. america is on the move jamming highways and packing planes. >> i honestly should not have made my flight. it was crazy this morning. >> in the middle of thanksgiving rush, a security scare, a stowaway gets past the tsa at one of the nation's busiest airports. >> there were no empty seats on the flight so the assumption is that she was hiding in one of the lavatories during takeoff. >> and now the weather could make for a travel mess with the busiest day still to come. we're tracking all of it. high stakes call. new details overnight about the conversation between president-elect trump and mexico's president covering tariffs, the border and more, as law enforcement agencies investigate a series of threats targeting members of the incoming administration. >> i'm not going to be intimidated by these people. >> we're live with the latest. dining under the stars. an exclusive interview with the astronauts spending an unexpected holiday in space.

square. this is going to be the epicenter, the center of where the action winds up. the parade will wind up behind us. >> they're just getting ready right now to rehears one of the broadway shows, the outsiders. craig and sheinelle back in studio 1a holding it down for us. happy thanksgiving. how are you doing? >> we're doing great. looks like the rain is holding off a little bit. the shot looks beautiful where you guys are this morning. >> we have a tent. we have to tell the truth. >> we're wearing our hats. we are ready for the elements and nobody is going to rain on this parade. >> no. >> it's going to be fun. >> so many people, by the way, hitting the road nationwide, of course, looking forward to that big thanksgiving feast hours from now. but unfortunately some nasty, winter weather is going to impact some of those trips and an airport security breach has some flyers concerned after a stowaway was discovered on an international flight. we've got that covered and al is along the parade route with the latest forecast. first to erin mclaughlin on new york's long island with the

latest. hi, erin. happy thanksgiving. >> hi, savannah. happy thanksgiving. with all the wet weather in the northeast authorities are urging folks to be extra careful on the roads. the good news, experts say, thanksgiving is actually the best day to drive. meanwhile authorities are investigating how a stowaway flew from new york all the way to france. this morning, the thanksgiving travel crush is on with nearly 80 million people hitting the road, air, and rails. it comes amid a major security breach at new york's jfk airport. >> they've directed us to keep everyone on the airplane until we sort out the extra passenger that's on the plane. >> reporter: a stowaway managed to get through the airport security screening process without a ticket boarding a delta flight from new york to

paris, according to the tsa. she was not discovered until shortly before the plane landed. >> there were no empty seats on the flight so the assumption is thought she was hiding in one of the lavatories during takeoff. >> reporter: the tsa says it expects to screen a record 18.3 million travelers from tuesday through monday. about 6% more than last year. >> i honestly should not have made my flight. >> reporter: winter weather posing challenges in the air and on the road. denver leading the country in flight days for much of the day and newark passengers experiencing 95-minute delays amid an ongoing shortage of air traffic controllers. but despite long tsa lines, most flights on time for most of the country and with most thanksgiving travelers hitting the road this week dangerous conditions from an arctic outbreak causing headaches in the center of the country. whiteout conditions on highways in wyoming and snow in the mountains of colorado. >> we've definitely seen a lot of stuck cars and cars off the side of the road. >> reporter: now, back to that stowaway, delta airlines has

released a statement this morning saying they are investigating, adding, quote, nothing is of greater importance than matters of safety and security. now in terms of what remains of this busy holiday period, sunday, according to experts, is expected to be the busiest travel day. 3 million passengers expected nationwide at tsa checkpoints. if you are driving, peak traffic times expected from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on sunday, and then again from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on monday. something to keep in mind as you're headed home. guys? >> all right. erin, thank you so much. we've got the outsiders playing behind us. al is up the block about 30 blocks north of us at the start of the parade. he's got a first look at the holiday forecast. al, we kind of know how it's looking. >> yeah. it's going to rain.

here we go. they're rehearsing the open right now. holly williams said in "family guy" going to rain! and that's what's going to be happening. you see minnie mouse in the backound there. let's show you what we're looking at weather-wise as we get into this whole period. we are looking at wet weather, right now light rain, winds out of the northeast, 44 degrees. for the parade, it's going to be raining. we're going to be looking at showers. not a big deal. winds gusting to maybe 20 miles per hour before the end of the parade may have an impact on the balloons. as far as the e rest of e weather is concerned, thanksgiving day east coast is a mess, especially snow up into new england but the other parts of the country very cold in the plains. looking good. now we do have some really cold air coming in. we're going to be talking about that with this 5,000-mile trek from siberia, all the way down south. look at these temperatures. these are 10 to 20 degrees below average during the day, with temperatures in the 30s and low 40s.

and then overnight lows are going to be awfully brisk. i mean we are talking about temperatures that will be near freezing or below all the way down to the gulf and we've got lake-effect snow we've got to worry about that's going to dump a ton of snow into the great lakes region. we're going to take a look at that in just a little bit. guys, we're easing on down the road right now. i'm going to throw it back to you. >> all right. >> well done. >> al is dancing. >> okay. we are getting ready for the biggest macy's thanksgiving day parade ever. and in a moment we are going to speak to the newly minted new york city police commissioner, jessica tisch. but first, let us check in with stephanie gosk along the parade route. good morning, steph. we know the forecast. is everybody for the rain down where you are? >> reporter: happy thanksgiving, hoda. they are. and you know what, you have to hand it to the crowds. there's a group of women who come every single year, they're local, undeterred by the rain. there are people here from colorado, illinois, georgia. the water is not getting in

their way. there are some safety concerns and you heard al talk about them when it comes to the balloons and the wind. there is a unit, an emergency service unit with the nypd, their entire job today is to monitor those balloons. they're trained in the ropes. while there are rope handlers for the balloons these guys jump in if there's a problem. with wind. they have also been along the route, clearing it, making sure there are no obstructions. you know that pulley system, those ropes get pretty complicated, so pretty extensive training so they could be ready in case the wind picks up and, obviously, if it gets too windy they bring the balloons down, hoda. >> even though it's rainy, people always come out to this rain or shine. 3 million people expected to come out to watch this parade. so what's being done to keep everybody safe? >> reporter: this is an incredibly complicated security operation. the nypd does it every year. they're very experienced with it. and while people who are here are certainly

going to see a very visible presence on the ground the idea is to have a security situation that allows them to still enjoy it and have as much fun as possible. there's a lot of things they won't be able to see that will be in the background, counterterrorism units, you also have special ops units there will be drones in the sky keeping an eye on thingsgs and sanitation trucks that are filled with sand to prevent anyone from driving down the streets. the idea here is to have as much fun as possible. they do have a public service announcement of sorts for anyone who is trying to come here. don't get in your car. you're not going to get anywhere near the parade route if you're still on your way here, take public transportation, hoda? >> stephanie gosk, stephanie, thank you so much. right now as we talk about parade security we want to bring in a very important person who has a lot on her plate this morning jessica tisch, the commissioner of the new york police department. commissioner, good morning. first of all, congratulations. >> thank you. >> this is your first week on the job. >> my first week on the job.

>> did you know they were throwing you a parade for your first week? >> i suspected. as a lifelong new yorker, i had an idea. >> stephanie was mentioning what a complex security operation this is. tell us about what you bring to this parade every year. >> so our job is to keep this as safe and fun parade for new yorkers and our visitors and their families and we've got lots of resources out there. we have resources you can see and resources you can't see. we have our k9s, drones, we have the full complement of security out there for the parade today. >> there's no credible threats which is great news. >> there are no specific credible threats. >> this morning. like you said, you guys are ready for anything. >> yes. >> how do you prepare with so many people and so much going on? >> we can pivot on a dime. the new york city police department has seen everything. we learn every year from what we see that year. we're ready for protests if we get them. we don't expect protests today, but we're ready for whatever comes our way. >> well, talk about some of those preparations that you do. i think people might be surprised to know this is

something you're preparing for, essentially all year long. >> this is a huge preparation effort and multi-agency effort. not just the new york police department. we work with our emergency management, fire department, department of transportation, it's really an all-of-city planning event for a year. >> when you -- congratulations, again. >> thank you. >> on this new post. you said you wanted to bring back to the nypd. i thought that was such a profound statement. tell us what you meant by that. >> i think the profession of policing is the nobelist of professions and no one does it better than the men and women of the new york city police department. i want our cops to be proud to be cops. i want them to want their kids to be cops. we have to really get back to it where the cops are our heros. >> we see unfortunately in the last couple weeks some of these random, you know, incidents of violence, stabbing, people are scared.

>> absolutely. >> you can cite crime figures but when things like that happen, it stairs people. what's your word for new yorkers. >> the mayor just announced we're going to get 1600 additional cops in new york city. that is a really big number. people will see and feel those cops. not only makes everyone safer, it makes them feel safer to see a police officer, so we're looking forward to welcoming them in 2025. >> i hope you get turkey today. what are your plans for -- >> i'm going to go visit my grandmother tonight, my 97-year-old grandmother. >> police commissioner, i hope you don't have to cook or do dishes. >> no cooking for me today. >> thank you. happy thanksgiving. >> thank you. back to the studio and craig. >> love she's going to see grandma. savannah, hoda, thank you. we turn to president-elect trump's transition. overnight the president-elect had a high stakes phone call with mexico's president and they talked about everything from tariffs to border security and more. meanwhile, the fbi is now investigating a series of threats targeting several high

profile members of the incoming administration. nbc's kelly o'donnell following all of it for us and joins us from west palm beach, florida. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. there were no explosive devices found why authorities refer to these as hoax threats. still, it set off a lot of concerns for several trump world figures at their homes from new york to florida where local authorities responded. and officials say that this is a fluid situation as they try to determine who made these online and e-mail threats. new this morning, fallout over president-elect trump's latest tariff warnings against mexico. a tax he claims could be imposed to reduce the flow of migrants and drugs. just hours after mexico's president claudia sheinbaum responded with her own tariff threats the leaders spoke in a phoncall described as excellent and wonderful. writing on truth social, mr. trump went further declaring she agreed to stop migration

through mexico and into the united states, effectively closing our southern border. claiming president sheinbaum assured him that migrant caravans were no longer reaching the u.s. however, she later responded on x saying, mexico's position is not to close borders. meanwhile this comes amid a new wave of threats made against the president-elect's team, raising alarm bells. considered hoaxes so far, but disrupting the holiday week, for mr. trump's cabinet picks and inner circle. the transition team described this as violent, un-american threats to their lives and those who live with them. these attacks range from bomb threats to swatting. tom homan, mr. trump's future border czar says he's taking this seriously. >> i'm not going to be intimidated by these people. they're not going to silence me. >> reporter: designated defense secretary pete hegseth says a credible pipe bomb threat was

made to his home where his seven children were still sleeping, and the choice for epa director lee zeldin said a bomb threat included a pro-palestinian message to his long island neighborhood. >> a lot of law enforcement came out. we had some secret service. a bomb squad came out and did a robotic search. >> reporter: according to law enforcement no explosives were found and the threats were conveyed by e-mail and social media. the fbi said it takes all potential threats seriously and president biden has been updated. and here in florida, the president-elect hosted a dinner. a lot of people are thinking about thanksgiving. this was a little bit different. he had the facebook founder and tech titan mark zuckerberg over to mar-a-lago and zuckerberg's company meta said he appreciated the invitation to dine with the president-elect and to meet members of his incoming administration, and this is notable when you think about how this has been a tense relationship publicly.

this might be a bit of a thawing with, of course, back in 2021 after january 6th, mr. trump was expelled from facebook, and he has been publicly critical of zuckerberg. now they seem to be getting along. craig? >> kelly o'donnell, west palm beach, florida, thank you. to a thanksgiving meal high above the earth. astronauts suni williams and butch wilmore are celebrating the holiday on the international space station. of course that wasn't the original plan. their eight-day mission is heading into its sixth month. nasa taking the precaution to keep them in space after issues with their boeing starliner spacecraft. in an interview with lester holt, williams eased concerns about her and her health saying she and butch are eating well and working out. >> do you guys have plans? will you do something akin to a thanksgiving traditional meal? >> our plans as usual get up and workout, do the turkey trot, and watch a little macy's day parade

who died in a fiery tesla cyber crash early yesterday morning. they're encouraging mourners to gather at piedmont's annual turkey trot, which starts at 830 this morning. we've now learned the three people who died all graduated last year from piedmont high school. they were all back home for thanksgiving. a friend who was in a different car than the victims in the cybertruck managed to pull one person from the burning car. that victim is in the hospital with serious injuries. the exact cause of the crash is under investigation, but speed was one likely factor. good morning. we're in downtown san jose, where the 20th annual silicon valley turkey trot is set to get underway shortly. more than 23,000 runners and walkers are expected today. this event raises important money a food donations for area food pantries, feeding thousands of people every year. you can still get on the website and register at spivey. turkey trot.com until
