friday shoppers, meanwhile, are ready to roll. but the holiday rush is already on. with so many deals online, what's in store for buyers? we are live this morning at one bay area hotspot, and if you're heading out, you may want to bundle up. it's a chilly start to this friday, and we have a look at your black friday forecast. this is today in the bay. and good morning. the sound of the words friday. oh yes, i am marcus washington and i'm kira klapper in for laura garcia. let's start with a look at that chilly weather. cinthia pimentel is in for kari tracking what we can expect on this friday. friday freezing in some parts of the bay area, so please bundle up as you head out the door. we go up to the north bay 34 right now in santa rosa and napa 32.o right at freezing as we go up into lake county, clear lake, good morning to you. those 30s continue out
5:02 am
towards the east bay. 36 in dublin, and we're waking up to 39 down here in san jose. so it's another morning where we are repeating that frost advisory once again for the north bay hills, the east bay hills and down into the foothills of the south bay. so again, remembering to protect not only ourselves, but our pets and don't freak out like i did yesterday about your tire pressure light coming on. yes, that happened to me. that cold weather is compressing those tires and that is something to watch out for. but aside from the cold mornings for today, and even in through the weekend, we're going to have some stunning sunshine. i'll show you the outlook coming up in a few minutes. back to you. all right. thanks, cynthia. well, new overnight firefighters are still at the scene. this is of a fire that destroyed a century old shared victorian home in vallejo. this started around 230 this morning at ohio and sutter streets. those flames fully engulfed that home. which one tenant only learned about when they arrived back from their thanksgiving celebrations? it looks like the fire was started from another unit. like you see up here in the attic of
5:03 am
somewhere. mine is at. the mine is at the bottom on the lower level, and so i'm trying to sleep. once the fire is out, we're trying to figure out basically what's going on. now. he also says everyone made it out safely. firefighters. so far are not saying if they know how this fire started. a thanksgiving morning turkey trot meant to benefit piedmont high school athletics, instead turned into a run to honor three of their former classmates killed in a tragic car crash. the emotion and heartache changing the tone of the 23rd annual community event. yesterday's race began with a moment of silence led by the mayor. hundreds of attendees mourned the loss of the three young lives. all 2023 fhs graduates. early wednesday morning, they were in a fiery crash while riding in a tesla cybertruck. a fourth victim survived, but was seriously injured. race organizers changed the route so that runners could place flowers
5:04 am
at the site of the crash. there are no words that will bring these kids back to us that will make this all okay. everybody knew the families. everybody knew the kids or of the kids. i had a daughter in the class of the kids, so it was particularly meaningful that to come today. the victims have not been formally identified, but those who knew them say they were well known student athletes. the cause of that crash is still under investigation. one san francisco family has firefighters to ththank for ving their thanksgiving. it started around noon when crews responded to a north beach home after the oven caught fire. now, firefighters successfully put out the fire, but now the family had nowhere to cook the turkey. well, those same firefighters, they saved the day again. cooking that turkey at their firehouse just one block away. 2.5 hours later, the turkey was brown and crisp and delicious looking and we were very happy and honored to be able to take it back up to them and make sure
5:05 am
they were able to enjoy a wonderful thanksgiving dinner. talk about a success there. okay, so f firefights do say they don't typically cook food for others in their ovens. but you know what they say on this occasion they were happy to do so to help save a neighbor in need are such a great story. happening now. black friday shoppers are ready in stores are too. you can expect apparently even bigger discounts than online and extended hours, but more and more deals can also be found online today in the bay's thom jensen live for us over a the san francisco premium outlets in livermore. okay, so tom stores open in about an hou. they're seeing any shoppers arrive early. we are. we're seseeing thestream in right now and they're looking for these hot deals. you can see my breath. it's cool out here, but the deals are hot and people are coming in to get them. workers and shoppers already coming in even though they don't open for another hour here at 6 a.m, retailers are expecting another record. black friday today, though the one day sales in the
5:06 am
us in 2023 hit $9.5 billion, expected to exceed that greatly today, more than 65 billion globally last year. much of that is being done online these days, with nearly 125 million americans staying home to shop on black friday 2023. but our amigos found some shoppers on thanksgiving night who still prefer doing it. the old fashioned way. i'll probably go to actual store for macy's and maybe walk around, you know, the mall santana row as well. you know, i can't miss out on the discounts i prefer in store. there are deals to be had. whether you're coming out to stores or buying your gifts online. they are offering some really good detail or deals to get people in the stores. though the average black friday discount in 2023 was more than 30%, experts say, due to low unemployment and strong economy, they expect similar discounts and buying trends and record sales of more than $12 billion.
5:07 am
this year in the us. still a lot of time to get out here. the stores here at the premium outlets. if you're in the area don't open until 6:00. however, we are seeing shoppers, more of them coming right now to get in on some of these deals before some of ese deals are sold out. so we'll try to talk to some of these shoppers in the next hour. until then, back to you guys in the studio. i hope you're all getting your gifts online or at stores. start of the shopping already. i feel like this. the sales already started. the last few days i've been trying to get that list checked off. i start today, we'll follow up on monday and see if marcus was successful. thanks, tom. well, you know what? if you are planning to do any shopping of your own, experts do remind everyone. with the holiday shopping season here, of course, more people are going to try to take your hard earned money. yeah, new aarp data finds more than 4 in 5 people have experienced consumer fraud of some kind this year. that includes empty gift cards,
5:08 am
phishing through email or texts, even delivery thefts. also, consumer awareness about scams is lower, leading to more victims, according to fraud watch experts. the best protection is learning how to spot the fraud or the suspicious activity. and remember that anyone can be a target. it's transnational criminal enterprises behind this stuff now, and they're they've got a playbook, and the playbook works on everybody. and it's all about raising the emotion of the person. because when we're in a heightened emotional state, we tend to sort of bypass logical thinking. it's just how our brain works. and when it comes to gift cards, inspect them first before buying them, even grab them from the back of the rackto learn more, visit aarp.org/fraud watch network. i like that, grab it from the back. yeah, yeah, i always get gift cards for my kids teachers. oh that's good. they're actually better at the register now. like they check for you. they make
5:09 am
sure that the barcode isn't ripped. that's good to know. stuff like that. yeah, that's what i found, at least. all right. a lot of folks, though, certainly heading out to try to get some of those deals today. a jacket is needed. yes. was tom wearing too? i didn't get a chance to check, but he was cold out there. and yes, we are continuing with another cold morning. if you're headed out early, might have to use that debit card. that's going to get a lot of use later today to scratch some of the frost off your windshield. let's look at some of the coldest numbers right now with me. 31 in danville, under that frost advisory until about nine this morning. similar to boulder creek, it is chilly in the mountains up into the north bay. 33 in napa, but just a little bit more mild. as we go along the peninsula. we'll do 45 in san mateo. so let's take a look at our planner out there in livermore for people that are going well, if your jacket is not doing the work of keeping you warm and you want to buy yourself a new one perfect spot, we're going to continue with those 30s through about eight 9:00. slowly start to warm things up and get under some filtered sunshine, but still
5:10 am
pretty cool out there in livermore, only at 59 degrees in the middle of the day. more sunshine is on the way and actually temperatures warming up as we go on into the first couple of days of december, i'll show you the seven day outlook coming up in a few minutes. back to you. all right. thanks, cynthia. turns out black friday isn't the only big shopping day still ahead on today in the bay new data on just how much more sales were up on thanksgiving. plus, the way artificial intelligence is now helping inmates prepare for their life post prison. our scott mcgrew is breaking down the skills they're now learning. there's much more ahead. this morni here on today inng
5:13 am
second to last day of november, and it is a cold one up in san rafael. currently at that freezing point, the lack of the clouds overnight making it chilly, but a few of them will come rolling in. we'll see some filtered sunshine later on throughout the day, but it will be a cold morning on this black friday. nice weekend though. i'll show you the outlook coming up. bertha coombs from cnbc and it looks like the market is going to start higher on this last trading day of november. stocks slipped on wednesday ahead of thanksgiving, with the s&p 500 snapping a seven day winning streak. big tech names like nvidia led the losses as investors appear to be taking a little cash off the table and cashing in those stocks that have really performed well this year. still, the dow is on track
5:14 am
for its best month in a year, and the s&p since february. as a reminder, it's just a half day of trading today. markets will be closing at 1 p.m. eastern, as they traditionally do the day after thanksgiving. meantime, the federal trade commission has reportedly opened a broad antitrust probe into microsoft, likely the last major action before president elect trump takes office in january. and ftc chair lina khan is expected to step down. the agency is looking into allegations microsoft is abusing its market dominance and productivity software, which includes imposing strict licensing terms to prevent customers from moving their data from its azure cloud service to competition. microsoft has declined comment. meantime, it seems a lot of us were probably shopping for more couches on thanksgiving. salesforce says online sales were up about 4% through yesterday afternoon. that compares to a 2% rise last year. a fresh sign that shoppers
5:15 am
are snapping up steep discounts from retailers. salesforce is projecting cyber week, which started on tuesday and runs through cyber monday, will generate about $311 billion in global sales. i think we need to stop talking about these special days of sales. i've been seeing sales since the beginning of october. it seems like every day we were just talking about that birthday and you're going to get a notice every single day from now until christmas. exactly. everything is special. then. nothing is special. i know i'm right there with you, bertha. all right. great to see you. happy black friday anyway. great to see you. it's been a while, but good to see you. you too. all right, so we hear this often here in silicon valley, but a pair of engineers from facebook and next door quit their jobs to create what they hope is the future of learning. yeah, it's really cool. it's an ai powered computer course, but it goes as quickly or slowly as you need it to. as our scott mcgrew reports, it's attracted some unexpected
5:16 am
students. those students are prisoners at san quentin who are learning to use that platform. you're talking about. it's called formation to learn to how code. now, we've talked about coding at san quentin before. here's some video of the prisoners. the men in blue, they call themselves learning how to program tic tac toe, part of san quentin. surprisingly rich offerings of classes and other self-improvement, all coordinated through a program called the last mile. now, those engineers you're talking about discovered the last mile. and offered their coding course to the men in blue. now, keep in mind, when you're teaching someone at san quentin how to code, you're teaching someone who may have never seen a website before. here's foundation founder and ceo sophie nobody. i was visiting and seeing some of the student projects, and they were asking me, hey, like, does my shopping application look good? and i looked at the website and it
5:17 am
just looked bizarre, you know, and the reason is because they never seen a shopping website before, right? they don't have access to the internet to know what the norms are on the internet, and they're just, you know, they're just imagining reimagining what the internet could look like based on, you know, renderings that and kind of in their own creativity. and, you know, they have to transition through that. now, inmates who go through these programs like these end up with marketable skills in the last mile, has success stories of inmates released who got actual high paying jobs in bay area tech. and of course, there's another challenge before landing that tech job beyond just coding. it's the job interview, which may be the first job interview they've ever had. but for people who have who aren't used to talking to people in the tech industry at all, or an engineer is critical practice to help them be able to be able to
5:18 am
succeed in the technical interview process. now, the program is not just limited to the incarcerated, formation says a lot of their paying customers are people from underserved communities as well. and indeed, anyone can try their hand to learn to program like any school. this one's expensive, actually very expensive, but the jobs are available and may be ana. that's incredible scott. thank you. good to help them reenter. now to oakland's chabot space and science center. it's doing something a little different this year for the holidays. it all starts today. they're calling it sock skating. and they posted a sort of teaser video of it on social media. look at that. families will be able to kick off their shoes and skate on two artificial ice rinks that they claim work, just like a real ice rink. it will be available each weekend, starting on fridays through january 5th. and you know what the funny thing about it is? we were talking about this earlier last night. i was doing that in my
5:19 am
house, have hardwood floors, and i had everyone take their shoes off and so i was and i just was like, this is kind of fun. yeah, it reminds me of a little kid. so the thing you could do too, is you can open the windows and it feels like you're skating. yes. it's perfect. save a little money, but i'm sure it's fun to see other people do it. i think that's probably the most fun about it all. and check back next week for money saving tips with holiday money. trying to make everybody make it in the bay. thank you. yes, it is a cold one and you can open up those windows and make it feel like t the northole in your house if you want to. let's take a look in oakland where that event will be going on. we see light traffic through parts of 880 there. the inner bay not included in that frost advisory, as temperatures are just a touch warmer. 44 there right now. we could dip them a little bit as we see the sunrise coming up, and then get into some pleasant temperatures out there for people that are visiting anybody in oakland. the other thing that i want you to watch, besides those cold numbers on our map, 30s and 40s, even around freezing point in napa, people
5:20 am
that are making it up into parts of sacramento through the valley, we're going to see some dense fog there until about noon. as we get more of that mixing happening. so if you're headed towards somebody's house in the central valley to give them a little thanksgiving hug or whatever, just watch for that. other things we're watching is you might notice more high clouds in the picture later on. today, we have just a little bit of a subtropical tap going in. so you'll notice that through parts of the bay down towards monterey and even down into southern california. but at times it will be plenty of sunshine for you to get out there and shake off some of that extra weight from thanksgiving. now let's take a look at where we're headed for today. under that filtered sunshine might even be a beautiful sunrise and a beautiful sunset as we go through our final friday of the month. 64, in santa rosa. similar feel down here in san jose. everywhere in between those low to mid 60s in place. 62 san francisco for people heading to the city. and we talked about those low 60s in livermore for people going out
5:21 am
there shopping. definitely sweater weather. maybe even buy yourself a new one. you deserve it. let's go and take a look at what we can expect as we head into the weekend and into early december. dry weather, maybe some more filtered skies at times. and that valley fog, but otherwise no rain in the picture for the next seven days. so that paints a beautiful 7-day forecast. check it out here for our inland valleys. aside from the frost advdvisories the mornings, we have temperatures in the 60s and even starting to climb as high pressure pushes away that rain. maybe some spots getting into the 70s by early next week, getting the week going after that long holiday break, san francisco and the peninsula. also with some lovely take a look at the roads on this friday light. we do see sensors pretty green to go, and aside from the roads, i did want to let you know that if you are taking transit today, there are some schedules that are running a little bit differently. modified schedule for caltrain. if you want to check out those

new electric trains, the holiday schedule on the ferry for your friends and family in town. and we have a modified schedule down here with the vta. no express route is available. back to you. thanks, cynthia. 521 for you this morning. next on today in the bay nbc bay area response. packing your bags this holiday season. we'll tell you about one travelers single mistake that cost them hundreds of dollars twice, and how you can avoid it. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura, nbc, bay area responds next. and a reminder for you as we head toward the holidays, we're helping make sure that everyone has food on the table, our nourishing neighbors food drive is underway right now. it is easy to help out, so the next time you're at your local safeway, you can donate $10 at the checkout. that money benefits bay area food bank, serving hundreds of thousands of people. a nurturing neighbsor

north bay couple whose european adventure cost them a lot more than they expected just to get home. so they asked our response team for some help. consumer investigator chris chmura found a lesson for your future flights as well. hello from sfo. let's talk about arthur and laurie in novato. they were booked to fly home from milan first to frankfurt, then to sfo, but they missed their first flight. next, the airline charged them more than $900 to take a new first flight. they paid up and got to
5:26 am
frankfurt in time for their original connecting flight. but then they decided that they had the right to charge us an extra $277 each. as it turns out, missing that first flight set off a domino effect that pinched the couple twice. some fine print cost them dearly. namely, a common airline rule that you have to fly your flights in order or you could be forced to pay a penalty. the moral of the story is always let an airline know asap if you're running late and might miss a flight. you can watch our full story online right now at nbc bay area.com/response. spoiler alert punctuality pays. back to you. good to know, chris. he always has the helpful tips. and very true. yes. all right. 526 right now, next year, the top stories we're following. frosty forecast this morning for you. here's a live look outside. you know, right now we are under a frost advisory. our cinthia pimentel breaking down how soon some of that warmer weather m arrive.

and vibrancy of san jose. black friday means more than good deals. it also means small business. saturday is just around the corner. we're going to tell you how san jose leaders are helping small businesses grow. also, a south bay holiday tradition returns. we have information on today's christmas in the park grand opening and the changes you can expect to see this year. this is today in the bay. good morning. hoping you had a wonderful thanksgiving. i'm kira klapper in for laura garcia and i'm marcus washington. all right. you step outside. you know, it's cold. so let's get a look at that forecast for you this morning. forecaster cinthia pimentel is tracking those numbers. and they are low this morning 30s and 40s. once again a repeat pattern of what we had thanksgiving morning. now for that black friday. so maybe treat yourself to a nice scarf as we go on into the next couple of days. busy shopping season. we see san jose focus right there. christmas in the park 40 degrees to start this friday. finally, the weekend. but yes,
5:31 am
some numbers are coming down into the 30s. palo alto and walnut creek. walnut creek is in that frost advisory until 9 a.m. as we see those clear skies through the east bay. also clear skies and dazzling right there through san francisco. just a touch warmer, 45 degrees now as we go throughout the day. aside from the cold mornings, we are watching places, getting into some of that fog, especially in the inland valleys. so if you're waiting for somebody to come in from the valleys, or if you're heading towards maybe some leftover plates this morning in those areas, just be careful with the changes in visibility. further than that, we are going to start to talk about december. we are wrapping up the year, but it will be a dry and pleasant start to the month. i'll talk about the outlook coming up in a few minutes. all right cynthia, thanks. and east bay burglary suspect is now in custody after apparently picking the wrong church to break into. it all started early thanksgiving morning when church pastor nick nieves responded to an early morning alarm at first family church in antioch. pastor nick
5:32 am
tells us he unexpectedly came face to face with an intruder who used an ax to smash his way in. but the intruder clearly had no idea. the pastor is trained in martial arts. the pastor says his instincts quickly took over, and i shouted at him to stop, and that the police were going to be on the way. and he ran, and i grabbed ahold of him, and we ended up wrestling in the parking lot of the church. i was able to pin him to the ground, you know, he got up and tried to get away several times, but basically just trying to wear him out. i thought i could outlast him. wow. go pastor nick. pastor nick says the intruder ran out ofteam within about 15 minutes. right around when police arrived. you see him in cuffs there? most of all, he says he hopes the man learns from this and can change his ways. well, another unexpected and hopeful twist this morning for a family who nearly had their thanksgiving ruined by thieves. we've been following this story since it first
5:33 am
happened on tuesday. you may remember that's when someone broke into the suv outside of a san jose family's home and stole a customized wheelchair they desperately rely on for their teenage son, miguel. he has cerebral palsy. now, on wednesday, volunteers delivered a replacement wheelchair, saving the family from what would have been a $6,000 replacement cost. well, we've now learned that someone returned that stolen wheelchair and a new social media posting. the family says that someone left it across the street and they are grateful for the community support. wow. i love that. happening tonight. the return of a south bay holiday favorite san jose's christmas in the park opens at plaza de cesar chavez. the two acre downtown park is being transformed into a holiday fantasy with more than 40 musical and animated exhibits. tonight at six, they'll light the 65 foot tree that will serve as the centerpiece. organizers say this year's event includes an expanded stage for holiday

themed performances, and it's all free and not too far north of there in santa clara, great america today opens its annual winterfest celebrations. this is video they posted on social media. you can see the park takes on a festive feel with added light displays, holiday themed food and attractions, and that continues through january 5th. happening today the holiday shopping season kicking off with black friday deals at stores everywhere but south bay leaders, they really want to make sure that those small businesses don't get lost in the shuffle. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab is live at one previously vacant storefront, now transformed into a pop up collective to keep entrepreneurs in business. i love this hey ginger. hey. good morning, kira and marcus. you say shopping? i want to be there. that's why we are at this holiday pop up. you know, this store was empty just days ago. it used to be a petco store that
5:35 am
closed down eight months ago. and just until a couple days ago, it is now transformed into a holiday pop up. for the next ten days, we're in san jose's willow glen neighborhood, which is pretty cool stuff. there are ten vendors here. it will be for the next ten days, and i want to show you this is really a great way to bring vendors together all under one roof. i also want to point out that the city of san jose is really into supporting small businesses. in this video that was provided by the city of san jose, you can see that there are some other mom and pop shops highlighted in the holiday san jose campaign. now, there are more than 300 small businesses in 12 unique neighborhoods where you can buy, dine and celebrate with a san jose flavor. the city is investing in its business corridors. it's hosting workshops for owners and creating opportunities f new businesses like night markets and pop ups. that can sometimes be the first step towards a more permanent business. we're providing technical assistance,
5:36 am
helping them understand things like permitting and complying with public health marketing, even talking about more sophisticated techniques like use of ai tools to identify and market to their target audience. and with us, this morning is carol dombkowski of three sisters. carol, i know you're putting this pop up together. we were just talking about supporting small businesses, also bringing together some holiday cheer. talk to us about why you put this together and how it's really a big boost. so probably about 4 to 6 years ago, i was doing pop ups as a means to bring other vendors together. and with the decrease in open, empty shops, we stopped doing it. and then when i closed my business in july, i knew i wanted to do pop ups and we had ample buildings available on lincoln avenue. so i approached
5:37 am
michael mulcahy, and this worked out that i was able to rent the old pop up petco. that's great. well, let's walk around here because you have a lot. you have ten vendors under one roof, so you kind of have everything that maybe people are looking for when it comes to holiday shopping. talk to us a little bit on this side here. so later we'll talk about the other side. we have vendors that bring together all different errors we like for instance from the 1800s all the way up to about probably the 1980s. yeah. take a look at these chairs. this particular vendor picks up the vintage or chairs and re-upholster. so she's saving stuff that would normally go into a landfill. an, you know, the vintage oil paintings, you've got lady head vases over here that were real popular in the 50s, where people would put them, comes under the
5:38 am
hollywood, hollywood regency era. you've got lots of christmas, vintage christmas available. well, i love it, carol. you know, because there are things that, you know, you go into the store, you go online. well, first of all, personally, it's hard for me to find stuff online. i mean, i call myself old school, but i still like to go into the store and i want to feel it. look, that's right. right. raise your hand because we're hosting christmas. so these are very cute. but, you know, i mean, these are things that you can't find. i'd love to still see things that you are buying. see how it fits into your space. this particular vendor has a lot of the really, really old santas, which are really hard to find. wow. okay. all right. well, i know we're going to see some more vendors because in the next hour we'll get the other side of this of this store. but i do want to point out that there is a website, that there is a website that you can check out here in san jose. this is
5:39 am
shop local san jose website. you can find some businesses that are also celebrating latino culture. we're going to talk more about that in the next hou. we're going to find out more from the other vendors here. and carol. but for now, we're going to send it back to you guys. thank you. tell me if you want me to pick you anything up. yes, yes, we were just talking about that ginger. there's some good options there. i knew it. and great to support local businesses. three sisters in willow glen, great. thanks, jen. all right. see you in a bit. we're going to check in now with cynthia for a look at our weekend weather. because who cares about friday. everyone just wants to go to saturday and sunday. especially if you have people visiting. right. you need to do something with them because it gets crowded in the house sometimes. get outside, get outside. you mentioned that yesterday too, right? let's go to pacifica. maybe some of those people want to see the gorgeous coastline here. we'll see some clouds throughout the day, maybe a few more peeks of sunshine through the middle of it.
5:40 am
temperatures chilly though, so let them borrow a jacket if they didn't bring 159 there as the high in pacifica. let's go to wine country. maybe it's a treat. you're taking your friends and family up towards wine country. we will see more sunshine up there. temperatures at 62 degrees later on this afternoon with some high clouds rorolling arnd for the evening and cooling down into the 40s. now, speaking of cooling down, you want to bundle up and bring your best christmas gear to christmas in the park. that opening ceremony is tonight at six. we see all the lights right there and our live camera at cesar chavez plaza. some hot cocoa definitely in the mix as we see those temperatures get down into the 50s and some low 40s as we go on into the nighttime hours. it is shop small saturday after this black friday, let's go up into the north bay san rafael will have its holiday of lights and shopp sml saturday around downtown. we're going to see a nice day there. cool in the upper 50s, but overall not too bad once you get walking around fourth street. it's a lovely day. let's go down south. a little bit of a road trip. we will see warmer
5:41 am
numbers down there in la under some cloudy skies, though 70 will continue for the weekend. bring them up a little bit more for tomorrow and then just a touch cooler for our sunday plans. as people are wrapping up that holiday weekend. back to you. thanks, cynthia 540 this morning, new revelations about the negative impacts pollution can have on our brains. yeah. still ahead for you here on today in the bay, the research about rising health concerns as our climate in crisis worsens. el capitan in yosemite, not only one of the most famous mountains in the world, now also the world's fastest supercomputer. i'm bob redell will take you inside the lawrence livermore lab for this marvel of computer engineering. i thought that was real. that was incredible. i was like, really? first, another edition of our school shoutout series. we're seeing our school in newark, california. good morning, bay area. woo! oh my
