fire. we hear from one shocked tenant who suddenly has lost
6:01 am
everything and the cold weather is back. if you're heading out, you'll definitely want to bundle up. it's a chilly start to this black friday. we have a look at your forecast as you make your weekend plans. you said black friday, so ready set. shop live report on the record breaking black friday shopping getting underway this morning. also, if you plan to shop online, what you need to keep in mind that and more. this is today in the bay. good morning to you on this friday i'm marcus washington and i'm kira klapper in for laura garcia. cinthia pimentel is here in for kari with a look at the forecast. i had to pre start my car today. i haven't done that in a while. it is so cold. once you sit in the car and you're hoping to warm up and it's just freezing in there and it doesn't look at novato 30 degrees right now we are under a frost advisory until about 9 a.m. there in the north bay. also
6:02 am
included are the east bay hills, gradual warm up as we start to peek out of our homes later on. this morning. temperatures in the upper 50s by lunchtime, and we should get a high of about 62. there in novato, 64 in santa rosa, 60s pretty much all around the map. but notice the trend as we go on into tomorrow and even on sunday, should be a lovely weekend, starting to warm up just a little bit. so i'll show you the outlook as we go on into december. i like the 7-day forecast. i think you will too. let's take a look at that in just a second. but there is an alert that i want to let you know about. on the roadways. we go back to the east bay. this is eastbound highway four. on a normal day would be counter commute, but as people start to make their way out towards black friday and any other business on this last friday of the month, i do want to tell you that it is a fatal crash. unfortunately, you see that highlight in red. the chp and other officials there on the scene have closed it right around railroad avenue was the first scene where a couple of cars got into it, and some
6:03 am
behind them maybe didn't see them, but crashed into the scene. we go on and try to divert the traffic on bailey road, but it is a slow morning as you make your way. highway 4 trying to get into pittsburgh. i'll continue to follow the updates as the morning goes on. thanks, cynthia. well, now to that overnight fire there still at the scene. firefighters there. so that fire destroyed an old century home. this was shared by shared shared home in vallejo. it started around 230 this morning at ohio and sutter streets. those flames fully engulfed the home, as you can see right there. we know that one tenant learned about this only when they arrived back from thanksgiving celebrations. it looks like the fire was started from another unit. like you see up here in the attic or somewhere. mine is at the mine is at the bottom on the lower level. and so i'm trying to once the fire is out, we're trying to figure out basically what's going on. so he also says that everyone made it out safely. firefighters. so far not saying
6:04 am
if they know how this fire started. we're going to turn now to. it might feel like you've alrey been inundated with black friday sales via email and text. but there's more coming. today, retail experts expect record sales to top $12 billion. a lot of money there. so thom jensen joining us this morning live from san francisco premium outlets in livermore. this is where they just opened a few minutes ago there. and i know last time we checked, pretty quiet there. is it revved up a little bit? quite a bit. the parking lot is actually just filling up. it's unbelievable how quickly the parking lot filled up. and i just talked to security here. they actually hire a traffic solutions firm to handle the traffic coming in on black friday. and he was telling me, you know, from this point on, it can take folks maybe an hohour to ge in the parking lot once they get off the exit. so it's just incredible how busy it is getting. we're talking to people who are here for these
6:05 am
great black friday deals. you know, a lot of people are shopping online, but they're finding even deeper deals, better deals here at the brick and mortar stores, the one day sales in the u.s. in 2023 hit $9.5 billion for this one day. and like you said, they're expecting more of that, possibly more than $3 billion more in sales up to 12. and a half dollars billion this year. even though most of the black friday sales are online. like i said crowds are still expected, with 75 million people expected at u.s. malls and shopping centers today. but brick and mortar stores are trying to attract shoppers to the stores with huge deals and we talked to people who traveled great distances to get in on some of this black friday action. we always try and come out here every black friday and we always get good deals. so you just know they're going to have deals. yeah, they normally do. yes they normally do. yes. it's better for me than online to get that in person. shopping experience. yes. and to see all
6:06 am
the people right here is kind of crazy. there are still deals to be had, whether you're coming out to the stores or buying online. the average black friday discount in 2023 was more than 30%, and retail experts are expecting more of the same trends this year. as i said, though, even more sales online and in stores this year with $12.5 billion perhaps in total u.s. sales and still plenty of time to get out to the stores. these stores are open until 9:00 at the outlets. some stores are open until midnight tonight, so plenty of time, you guys, to get out and do your shopping. we're live in livermore, thom jensen today in the bay i've defitely already made a dent in my shopping list, but our friend marcus here, he's got a long list. got to make the list. yeah. start there. me too. great. great point. great point. thanks, tom. all right, so a lot of you, i'm sure. are planning to do some type of shopping. and experts do remind everyone out there that the holiday shopping season is here. more people out
6:07 am
there also trying to take your hard earned money. yeah, there's new aarp data that finds more than 4 in 5 people have experienced consumer fraud of some kind this year. that includes empty gift cards, phishing through email or texts, even delivery thefts. consumer awareness about scams is apparently lower, and so it's leading to more victims. according to fraud watch experts, the best protection is learning how to spot the fraud or the suspicious activity and remember, anyone can be a targe. it's transnational criminal enterprises behind this stuff now. and they're they've got a playbook. and the playbook works on everybody. and it's all about raising the emotion of the person. because when we're in a heightened emotional state, we tend to sort of bypass logical thinking. it's just how our brain works when it comes to gift cards. inspect them first before you buy them. even grabb fr the back of the rack. to learn more, visit aarp.org/fraud watch network. so there's a san

francisco family out there, and they say they have firefighters to thank for saving their thanksving. not totally the way u would think, but here's how it all started around noon. this is when crews responded to the north beach home after the oven caught fire. firefighters successfully put out that fire, but now the family had nowhere to cook the turkey. they were able to save that. well, those same firefighters saving the day again, cooking that turkey at their firehouse just a block away, 2.5 hours later, the turkey was brown and crisp and delicious looking, and we were very happy and honored to be able to take it back up to them and make sure they were able to enjoy a wonderful thanksgiving dinner. now that's helping your neighbor, right? or firefighters do say they don't typically cook food for others in their ovens. but you know what? this occasion was a rare one, and they were really happy to do to do so to help that family in need. skiers and snowboarders, get your gear ready. this is a live look at sierra at tahoe. it is set to
6:09 am
open later today. looks ready. dark out there and snowy just in time for the holiday weekend and usually when it's cold there, it's cold here. let's check in with cinthia pimentel to see what our microclimate forecast is like today. sunny but cold. sunny but cold and happy that the resorts are opening our storm. last week. remember that brought about 1 to 3ft of snow. so everybody just getting ready for the season. live camera right now is stunning. look at your screen if you can. but the temperatures are cold 14 degrees. there. the weekend though should be nice. no alerts from my part to tell you about, so just drive safely up into the mountains. we come down here and we're noticing some patchy fog around places in the north bay like santa rosa, novato, our typical spots 33 degrees right now under that frost advisory, another place under it is dublin, where we see temperatures in the mid 30s there with some gradual warm up. that is coming later on this
6:10 am
morning. but it is a frosty start. we are scraping the frost and just bundling up as we try as we go outdoors. 40 right now in san jose as we see christmas in the park. should be a lovely weekend for that. i'll be back with the seven day outlook coming up in a few minutes. looking forward to it. thanks, cynthia. nine past the hour. they are changing lives with the help of ai ahead on today in the bay. our scott mcgrew shows us the way one project is using tech to help prisoners prepare for life after their time behind bars. all right. kira, are you feeling lucky as? sure. okay. don't you just sit down? don't do that. what i'm about to talk about here. so if you are feeling lucky out there, the growing mega millions jackpot up for grabs tonight and your odds of winning the big prize. keep it right here. y're watching toouda
6:11 am
take that up a little bit higher. you should feel that, like, right back here. oh, yeah, i felt that! good, that is so much better than last week. thanks, i've been doing 'em every night while i'm watching tv. - oh, what are you watching? it's a mystery. high quality care that meets you where you are.
6:12 am
6:13 am
the time is 612. let's start down here in santa clara, 40 degrees to start our final friday of the month. we'll bring it down just a little bit right around sunrise at 7 a.m. into the 30s. so bring that jacket with you as you head out the door. overall, we should see some filtered sunshine throughout the day and continuing into the weekend, but it should be nice for all of those outdoor activities. i'll have the full forecast coming u. i did want to check on the traffic. if we can bring up that map too. it is a fatal crash
6:14 am
that has happened. eastbound highway four of railroad avenue off ramp there in pittsburg. we see the closure. that area highlighted in red, stretching back into parts of bay point. they're trying to move traffic down into bailey road to give all of the crews working there some space and to get the coroner on scene. i'll keep watching the details on this as the morning goes on. wall street is set to open higher as the markets return from thanksgiving. stocks slipping on wednesday, with the s&p 500 snapping a seven day winning streak. big tech names like nvidia led those losses. investors appear to be cashing in, taking a little profit off the table on stocks that have performed well this year. still, the dow is on track for its best month in a year, and the s&p its best since february. reminder it's just a half day of trading today following the holiday, markets close at 1 p.m. eastern. meantime, consumers were busy
6:15 am
shopping from their couches on thanksgiving. salesforce says online sales were up about 4% through yesterday afternoon. that compares to just a 2% increase last year. fresh signs shoppers are snapping up steep discounts from retailers. best buy and target are among the chains that have cited a stronger than expected response to those promotions. salesforce is projecting cyber week, which runs from the tuesday before thanksgiving to cyber monday, will generate about $311 billion in global sales. meantime, today, retailers are bracing for black friday crowds as they also face a shorter holiday shopping season and consumers were being pretty picky about their spending. the national retail federation expects more than 85 million of us to visit stores this year, up from 75 million on black friday last year. shoppers and retailers have a much shorter season. only 26 days between thanksgiving and
6:16 am
christmas, compared to 31 days last year. with your cnbc morning business report, i'm bertha coombs. i'm ready for that sprint. i could do that 26 days pretty good at that. i know you are. all right. i want to tell you about a pair of engineers from facebook and nextdoor. so they quit their jobs. but to create what they hope is the future of learning. it's an ai powered computer course. it goes as quickly or as slowly as you need it to. our scott mcgrew shows us that it's attracted some unexpected students. those students are prisoners at san quentin who are learning to use that platform you're talking about. it's called formation to learn how to code. now, we've talked about coding at san quentin before. here's some video of the prisoners. the men in blue, they call themselves learning how to program tic tac toe, part of san quentin. surprisingly rich offerings of classes and other self-improvement, all coordinated through a program
6:17 am
called the last mile. now, those engineers you're talking about discovered the last mile and offered their coding course to the men in blue. now keep in mind, when you're teaching someone at san quentin how to code, you're teaching someone who may have never seen a website before. here's foundation founder and ceo sophie nabati. i was visiting and seeing some of the student projects, and they were asking me, hey, like, does my shopping application look good? and i looked at the website and it just looked bizarre, you know. and the reason is because they never seen a shopping website before, right? they don't have access to the internet to know what the norms are on the internet, and they're just, you know, they're just imagining reimagining what the internet could look like based on, you know, renderings that and kind of in their own creativity. and, you know, they have to transition through that. now,
6:18 am
inmates who go through these programs, like these end up with marketable skills. in the last mile has success stories of inmates released who got actual high paying jobs in bay area tech. and of course, there's another challenge before landing that tech job beyond just coding. it's the job interview, which may be the first job interview they've ever had. but for people who have who aren't used to talking to people in the tech industry at all, or an engineer is critical practice to help them be able to be able to succeed. in the technical interview process. now, the program is not just limited to the incarcerated. formation says a lot of their paying customers are people from underserved communities as well. and indeed, anyone can try their hand to learn to program like any school. this one's expensive, actually very expensive, but the jobs are available and may be worth it. back to you. great, scott. thanks. the mega millions jackpot is growing. ahead of tonight's drawing, the pot total
6:19 am
is estimated to be $514 million. if you're wondering about your odds, you have about a 1 in 300,000,000 chance of scoring that jackpot. by the way, the powerball jackpot is at $214 million with similar odds. so there are about $300 million apart. i would take either i'm look i'm a simple gal i have a chance. yes that's what i heard. oh, that's. you're a real half glass full kind of guy. i am. all right. well, half full is that cold? but is this the weekend? yes. and the sun. and there's going to be sun. there you go. walking on sunshine today. there we go. it is a cold one again today. frost advisory until 9 a.m. so grab a jacket, put on your robe and your fuzzy socks and just be careful as we drive early this morning. you need to scrape some of that frost off of the windshield. 30 to start in danville in our
6:20 am
friday morning. last one of the month, 32 in napa and we see some 40s along the inner bay, not included in that frost advisory, but still very cold. 43 in san mateo, 42 in hayward. let's take a look at where we're headed for the day. i'll squeeze on out of here. so you can get a clearer picture. some filtered sunshine, though, as we see some high clouds rolling around through the bay area later on this afternoon, particularly down here in the south bay. 65 in san jose, 60 out in livermore for our shopping day, 60 in martinez and 64 up in santa rosa. we see those clouds rolling in at times. maybe on your way back or way down into southern california, whatever your weekend is. we could see some showers that want to push along the coast, bringing some of those clouds and some fog at times through the central valley. but overall, we are going to take a look at that. no rain. keep things clear as that high pressure just blocks those systems away from the bay area, and we bump up the numbers a little bit. so check this out in
6:21 am
saint helena for the weekend. we do stay in those low to mid 60s. and then we get into monday tuesday first couple of days of december. here we're talking about maybe going into the 70s territory as we go on into about tuesday, wednesday overall should be some nice days under that sunshine. so we had those storms last week. we get a little bit of a break. enjoy it while we have it. san francisco peninsula low 60s through the weekend. but that sunshine is here. the cold mornings are with us, but at least the numbers are looking good in our inland 7-day forecast. frost advisory repeats again tomorrow as we start the day in the 30s mid 60s in the into the afternoon, and then we see sunshine and some nice numbers to start our final month of the year. back to you guys. wow, it's time to pull out the thicker jacket. it's now time. it's coat season right. i keep saying jacket but yeah coat a tomato tomato 621 right now next here on today in the bay nbc bay area responds packing your bags this holiday season. we'll tell

you about one travelers single mistake that cost them hundreds of dollars twice and how you can avoid it. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura, nbc bay area responds next. but first, a reminder as we head toward the official holidays, we are helping to make sure everyone has food on the table. our nourishing neighbors food drive is happening right now. it's so easy to help the next time you're at your local safeway checkout or andronico's, you can donate $10. that money benefits bay area food bank, serving hundreds of thousands of people. our nourishing neighbors drive runs through christmas day. we'll be right back

bonds to a couple from sonoma county. they went on a bucket list trip to europe, but it was the adventure getting back home that cost them a lot more than they expected. so they asked our response team for some help. consumer investigator chris chmura found a lesson for your future flights as well. hello from sfo. let's talk about arthur and laurie in novato. they were booked to fly home from milan first to frankfurt, then to sfo, but they missed their first flight. next, the airline charged them more than $900 to take a new first flight. they paid up and got to frankfurt in time for their original connecting flight. but then they decided that they had the right to charge us an extra $277 each. as it turns out,
6:26 am
missing that first flight set off a domino effect that pinched the couple twice. some fine print cost them dearly. namely, a common airline rule that you have to fly your flights in order, or you could be forced to pay a penalty. the moral of the story is always let an airline know asap if you're running late and might miss a flight. you can watch our full story online right now at nbcbayarea.com. slash responds. spoiler alert punctuality pays back to you. my gosh. yeah. good. good to know. just call them. just call the airline. all right. 625 for you this morning. we've got a lot more ahead for you. coming up at 630, including a surprise turn for a church intruder. yeah, the way one pastor's unique training helped him prevail during a violent face to face encounter. and we're live in san jose's willow glen neighborhood this morning, where a vintage holiday pop up begins. i want to show
6:27 am
you just how much i want to spend this black friday. small business saturday, and cyber monday for hololiday shoing. take a look at this. $0.40. what? what can you buy for $0.40 these days? i probably won't get far, but we'll have much more from here with you. after the break. stay with us. you're watching today in the bay. look, it makes a sound.

this owners and encourage the community to get out and experience the true diversity and vibrancy of san jose. right now, at 630, black friday means more than good deals. it also means small business saturday just around the corner, and we do have a live look this morning with some unique way that san jose leaders are helping small businesses grow. plus, countdown to kickoff. some big questions for the faithful ahead of sunday night's expected snow game in buffalo and how you can soon snag some one of a kind team memorabilia. this is today in the bay. good friday morning. hope you had a wonderful thanksgiving. i'm kira klapper and i'm marcus washington. let's get a look at that forecast for you this morning. we can certainly tell you it's cold. just open your door. yeah, yeah. a window and you feel it. yeah, but it is a pretty sunrise. we
6:31 am
are starting to get some clearer pictures waiting for that 705 sunrise. and santa rosa has cleared up from the last time i took a look at it, but it is cold 33 under that frost advisory. pleasant pleasanton is to 35 to start the day there. we move towards san carlos and san jose. low 40s. so definitely jacket weather as you step out the door. wouldn't even hurt to get some mittens. honestly, we take it hour by hour here for you. the models are painting some subtropical moisture moving in towards the bay area. so what does that mean for us? we're going to get some filtered sunshine as we go into the middle ofhe day and into our afternoon, but overall temperatures are looking good. weather is staying dry for the long weekend ahead to. all right. thanks, cynthia. well, happening today. the holiday shopping season kicks off with black friday deals at stores pretty much everywhere but south bay leaders, they really want to make sure that small businesses don't get lost in that shuffle.
6:32 am
yeah, tomorrow is small business. saturday, and our today i in the baginger conejero saab is going to help us support some local entrepreneurs at what used to be a vacant storefront, now transformed. hey ginger. hi. good morning guys. just until several days ago, this used to be an empty storefront, an empty space. it was a former petco that closed down eight months ago, but now it's transformed into a vintage holiday pop up. it's bringing together ten vendors for ten days, all under one roof, and it's taking advantage of the holiday shopping traffic without a long term lease. now, speaking of small business saturdays that you guys were just mentioning, the city of san jose is looking to support small businesses. take a look at this video provided by the city. you can see some other mom and pop shops highlighted in the holiday. than 300 small businesses in corridors hosting workshops for
6:33 am
owners, creating some new opportunities for businesses like night markets and pop ups. and speaking of pop ups, this is where we're at the day after thanksgiving shopping after thanksgiving. all right, i want to bring in carol dombkowski once again. ginger. hi, carol. good morning to you. of three sisters. now, i know three sisters has now closed, but you say you you are not turning your back on. no, i'm not done. i'm not done. we're still going forward. we're going to be doing p ups, selling at some of the outdoor antique markets and trying to do more of the pop up situation, bringing small vendors together and creating a great shopping experience for everybody. and speaking of those small vendors, i want to highlight some of them that you have here. this is a willow glen local entrepreneur, glen honey. steve dombkowski, my husband. he also sells. he sells three kinds
6:34 am
of honey and we do one for happy hollow zoo, which 100% of the proceeds go back to them. and then we also have philanthropy, who is a local and she does the body and skin care, and it's known nationally. so you've got my attention, body and skin care. and this is made from this is made from a local ingredients like local. she uses a little bit of the honey and the beeswax that go into the product and does a lot everything in here is natural. so great, wonderful product. yeah i love that natural stuff. okay. there are also some really cool things to check out. i know we're we're going to look at something else there. but those you showed me some of those. so this is one vendor who repurposes items tt people don't use anymore a candle stick, a jell-o mold, an old camera. look at that. oh,
6:35 am
wow. that's a great piece. reminds me of the register that i was just playing with. yeah. oil cans, old oil cans. so she uses a lot of pieces. that. and then creates these little figurines, old pieces. now they've they have been all repurposed. that's right. okay, well, speaking of repurpose, we're also going to go to another vendor who does the same. these are tablecloths. yes. you tell me that have now been made into clothing. unique pieces of clothing. so probably from the 20s she uses all different. here's the tablecloth into a blouse. i was trying to pull up the i was trying to. wonderful. yeah. like, look at the crochet. somebody chatting. somebody's grandmother made this tablecloth. probably took her almost a year. and now it could be a great bathing suit cover. yeah. i was going to say. i mean, like a bathing suit cover. i mean, i, i was chatting with carol about crochet and learning how to make one line and how intricate and hard this is.
6:36 am
yeah. so i have appreciation for this. this is very cool. now you can get ready for summer already and really quick before we have to go. we're over on that side. i don't know if you have time to show there are some kids repurposed clothing as well. she takes adult sweaters maher cuts them, makes them small for children. so it's a wonderful, wonderful pieces. all right, well, just really quickly, carol, you are starting today. the pop up opens today, 10 to 6 daily. okay. 10 to 6 daily and will run until december seventh. seventh. you've got pretty much you're going to be able to find something for someone on that list as long as they're good and not naughty. and we as item sell, we will be restocking almost daily. so okay okay. all right. make it till the end of the week. it'll still be here. you'll still be here. all right. carol, i just want to highlight because there's also a shop local san jose website where you can find other businesses that are in need of support. they're also celebrating latino culture. some of the businesses there are
6:37 am
calle willow, luna park. there are other links to the offerings of japantown and little saigon. i just want to point these out because this is important to support sj economy.com/shop local sj you can go there to find more information. carol, it's been so much fun. oh thank you. window shopping browsing with you. and i told marcus and kira that th can go ahead and send me whatever it is that they see, and cynthia as well. we'll be sending you a text. we'll be sending you a register. yeah, that was pretty cool. how much is the cash register? that thing is cool. not $0.40, i suspect. well, what can you get for $0.40? maybe. that's often $0.40. no, that'll be cool for kids, too, because they can learn a little bit. oh my gosh. yeah. thanks, ginger. so fun. now to an east bay burglary suspect now in custody after he chose the wrong place to break into. it started when church pastor nick nieves responded to an early morning alarm yesterday at his first family church in antioch. pastor nick says early
6:38 am
thanksgiving morning, he unexpectedly came face to face with an intruder who used an ax to smash his way into the church. but that intruder clearly had no idea that the pastor is trained in martial arts. he says his instincts quickly took over, and i shouted at him to stop, and that the police were going to be on the way and he ran. and i grabbed ahold of him and we ended up wrestling in the parking lot of the church. i was able to pin him to the ground, you know, he got up and tried to get away several times, but basically just trying to wear him out. i thought i could outlast him. pastor nick says the intruder ran out of steam within about 15 minutes. right around when police arrived just in time to cuff him. most of all, he hopes that man learns from this and changes his ways. another unexpected and hopeful twist this morning for a family who nearly had their thanksgiving ruined by thieves. we've been following this story since it
6:39 am
first happened earlier this week, when someone broke into the suv outside of a san jose family's home. we told you yesterday morning they stole that customized wheelchair they desperately rely on for their teenage son, miguel, who has cerebral palsy. well, on wednesday, volunteers delivered a replacement wheelchair, saving that family from what would have been a $6,000 replacement cost. but get this, last night we learned someone returned the stolen wheelchair in a new social media posting. the family said someone left it across the street. they are grateful for the community's support. i love that. yeah, well, you know, later today, the niners are scheduled to fly to buffalo. that's where they'll take on the bills sunday night. and what cynthia has been telling us may be a snow filled game. there's still a lot of uncertainty about whether quarterback brock purdy will play. practice yesterday closed to the media, but purdy is listed in questionable there with that shoulder injury. several other players missed practice for injuries, including star defensive lineman nick bosa
6:40 am
and veteran all star tackle trent williams. now don't forget the niners and the bills. they battle right here on nbc bay area for sunday night football. to celebrate, we're hosting football night in the city. this is a watch party over at thrive city outside of chase center. it's going to start at 5 p.m. fans can reserve that spot online. just head to nbc. bay area dot com slash football night. the 49ers are also getting ready to on their playbook, offering rare memorabilia and one of a kind experiences to help give something back for the holidays. next week. the niners foundation holds its eighth annual holiday sports auction. some of the items being offered this year include a vip monday night football experience for the niners game against detroit. also a meet and greet on the field with niners gm john lynch, and a signed memorabilia from current and former players. the foundation's executive director tells us. it's all for a great cause. last year was a record
6:41 am
