as thanksgiving travelers prepare for the journey home, much of the country is experiencing the first cold outbreak of the year with millions under freeze alerts this morning including the south. some areas of the country expecting as much as three feet of snow this weekend. dylan will be along shortly with everything you need to know. >> we begin with the biggest in person shopping day of the year of black friday, of course. millions of people are lining up at stores across the country, like here at the mall of america, in minnesota. you see the lines forming there. >> the lines starting to move too, even as many retailers got a head start on holiday sales this season. a record 132 million people are still set to head to stores across the country today, and according to the national retail federation. >> the total sales for november and december's holiday season expected to near $1 trillion. >> this morning, we have all of your black friday sales and the strategies covered. we want to begin with nbc's brian cheung who is pin one of

those malls ahead of the crush. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hope you had a wonderful thanksgiving. good morning from paramus, new jersey. it is worth rehashing that stat, yes, even though there is that calendar creep of black friday meaning you're getting deals as early as november these days, if there is a deal to be had, it is likely going to be today. >> overnight the start of one of the busiest shopping days of the holiday season, crowds turning out to be first in line to get the best deals. >> $13 at kate spade. >> and normally $200, $300. >> while holiday shopping deals are appearing earlier and earlier every year. >> now it is just november sales. >> reporter: consumers are expected to spend 15% more this weekend, dolling out $650 on average between today and cyber monday. spending is also expected to increase a across thentire

holiday shopping period, up to $989 billion. with five less days between thanksgiving and christmas, retailers are under pressure to get consumers to buy early and in bulk. it comes as thousands of amazon workers across 20 countries are set to protest on today's busy shopping day as well as cyber monday, demanding better working conditions. amazon for its part says the company is always looking at ways to improve, while adding it remains proud of its pay, benefits and safe work experience. meanwhile, retailers like target appealing to consumers by offering exclusive products. >> i'll be at this target, standing out here, 5:00 a.m. >> reporter: swiftie lines up to get their hands on these taylor items. >> this is the an anthropology exclusive to target. on black friday, we have the tour book from eras. >> reporter: as for what to buy, adobe says today will be the best day for televisions, but to wait until cyber monday for

apparel and electronics for discounts to deepen to between 20 to 30%. and the mall just opened here at garden state plaza. there are a few people filling in. a line just outside that just opened up, so 20, 30 people just rushed in there. the activity will pick up throughout the day. there is that exclusive book at target. this is the thing people are lining up for, retailers try to bring people into the store. i can't do a good emilie ikeda impression now. i think this is a big deal, though, eras tour book only available in stores as they try to draw shoppers in. >> a lot of people trying to get their hands on that today. brian, appreciate it. joining us with an inside look at how stores are preparing for this influx of customers is the co-president of simon malls. thank you for coming on your super bowl, we're so happy to have you. your moment has arrived. you heard brian say the door buster days are over, what are

you expecting to see today? is that true? >> we're expecting big traffic today. honestly, leading into this, we saw big traffic coming into this week and so it is a shorter holiday window post thanksgiving. people are coming out today, looking for deals. we're expecting a better holiday than last year this year and better bet better year overall. >> black friday started to morph into black november. what do they do to make today a unique buying experience for shoppers? >> well, we really plan for this all year. and so we're really about having fresh retailers in all of these shopping centers, so the biggest thing we do first is make sure all of our new brands are open for the holiday. so the last two weeks, it is chaos, everybody is putting the finishing touches on their new stores because the malls are about newness and that's our success. we got to get the retailers open. we got to have at all the janitorial, cleaning, all the

elves behind the scenes doing our work for us are ready for the super bowl today and so we have new retailers, and we have just beautiful shopping centers that have changed a lot over the years. >> eric, prices have come down. you think about three years from now, three years ago, where we were, but the president-elect signaled he wants to impose tariffs on goods coming in from some of our allies. how are retailers preparing for that and how concerned are you? >> you know, i'm not overly concerned. what i would say is, you know, we have seen inflation for the last two years, we have been talking about inflation. but yet we're sitting at our highest sales per square foot or near our high water mark for the last two years and contied to grow this year. i think we have a little something for everyone. you feel like you need to pinch pennies because you're feeling a little tight and some americans will, you can come to our outlets where everything is 50% off every day. >> ten years ago, the conversation was maybe malls were disappearing for good. you could do it all online at the tip of your fingers.

now ten years later, they appear to be holding strong now. what is your outlook for the future of malls in this country? >> that is a great question. and i can tell you malls have changed. the malls i grew ugoing to in the '80s, it is different now. these are major destinations with residential -- it is a live, work, play mentality. residential, entertainment, retail, and so these have become little mini cities and that's really the future of the mall. and you know, you'll see that through a lot of our properties, you'll see it all over america and i think the mall has a bright future. especially with the younger generation. the gen z loves the mall. they're all over our socials. meet me at the meal. it has been a great year. >> it is fun to come back together and do something, right? sometimes you want that in person experience. >> that's what it is about. >> thank you, eric, appreciate you being here. >> also this morning, most americans are resting and relaxing and recovering after

their thanksgiving dinners. but even on this relatively quiet day, millions are out on the roads and boarding planes beginning the long journey home. nbc's stephanie gosk is at newark airport with the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you know, imagine thanksgiving travel like a hurricane, and today is really the eye of the storm. kind of a pity i'm here in newark and not traveling anywhere. but all that is going to change this weekend. those hurricane force winds are coming back. this morning, millions waking up to frigid temperatures and dangerous driving conditions across the country. in parts of western and central new york, thanksgiving brought heavy snow and cold lake effect weather. the governor staging more than 100 national guard members to respond to this storm. three to four feet of snow accumulation is possible over the next few days. >> if you're in an area where there is snow or cold weather, have extra blankets in the vehicle, extra water, some

flares, flashlights, anything that could help you if you get stuck in traffic for a long time. >> reporter: snowplows clearing roads in rapid city, south dakota, while train lovers say the rails offer an easier way to go. >> you can just relax and sleep and it is a comfy chair, comfier than being on a plane even. >> reporter: some who waited until the last minute to travel were grateful for quiet roads and few flight delays. >> we didn't know how crazy the airport would be, but it is actually really nice. >> reporter: lines moving smoothly in normally busy airports like atlanta, laguguardia, a l.a. international. >> like the smoothest experience i've had at l.a.x., so crazy. >> reporter: the tsa administrator thanking workers for their efforts over the holidays. >> this has been a particularly busy year in the aviation sector. >> reporter: the peak rush is expected on sunday evening, when tsa says it is preparing to screen up to 3 million passengers. plan for extra traffic on the way to the airport as well. >> the longer you wait to leave on sunday, the worse the traffic

is going to be. >> reporter: one of the issues they have been having here at newark is the shortage of air traffic controllers. it really affects united. this is their hub here in the new york city area. and they are asking the faa to add workers and air traffic controllers so they don't have those problems. about but you may see them return to newark airport this weekend. >> stephanie gosk, thank you. joining us with the all important forecast, dylan is in for al. how is it looking? >> looking better than what it was when people were trying to get to thanksgiving. now you're going back home, most areas looking okay, except for the lake areas, lake ontario, lake erie, some significant lake-effect snow. elsewhere, things are fairly quiet. temperatures on the cooler side. but if we were to see any delays at the airports, chicago could see minor delays, detroit with that lake-effect snow, we'll see more delays. up and down the east coast looking good. orlando may be minor delays because of spotty showers and thunderstorms.

the roadways in and around the cleveland area from cleveland up to buffalo we could see some very slow goings on the roads because of about four to five feet of snow in the forecast over the course of the next several days. saturday we're still looking for that feet of snow up across the great lakes, but elsewhere looks good. sun and clouds in the southwest. temperatures in the 60s. we're looking good at the airports tomorrow. except in detroit. st. louis could see some spotty snow showers too. on the roads looking okay, except for in and around st. louis, cleveland to buffalo and then on sunday, if that's the big travel day for you, we're looking for cooler temperatures, still snow in the great lakes. for the most part, things looking better than they were on wednesday. >> that's good news, thanks, dylan. >> appreciate it very much. we want to turn to politics and the new bomb threats against several democrat members of congress that interrupted some thanksgiving day celebrations. the alarming security scare follows days of different threats against some of donald trump's top advisers earlier this week. kelly o'donnell is traveling with the president-elect and

covering it all for us this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good to see you, peter. these incidents set off a response from local police officers and some cases bomb squads, extending resources and encountering lots of distress and uncertainty. the fbi says it is working with state and local police departments and so far no arrests have been made. new developments this morning as a rash of bomb threat hoaxes expands to include more elected leaders. in an alarming string of phony claims, law enforcement across at least three states race to the homes of officials linked to both president-elect trump and congress. democratic senator chris murphy was a target, his office writing, it appears to be part of a coordinated effort involving multiple members of congress and public figures. the thanksgiving day focus on several connecticut democrats followed two days of similar threats against prominent figures around president-elect

trump, including cabinet picks and top advisers. in all of these incidents, officials say no devices or explosives were found. president biden has been updated on the bomb threat and spent thanksgiving on nantucket where he visited a local fire station. while here in florida, president-elect trump celebrated the holiday at mar-a-lago. posted video shows him taking in one of his campaign songs next to ally and billionaire adviser elon musk. and the trump family. ♪ ymca ♪ >> reporter: it comes a day after mr. trump spoke to mexico's president, following the tariff threats that he claims could hinder the flow of migrants and drugs. he said he will reconsider tariffs on close neighbors. >> i think it is a counterproductive thing to do. >> reporter: and commenting on the coming transfer of power. >> i'm thankful for a peaceful transition. i want to make sure this

is still holding. nbc's matt bradley is in beirut with the latest today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, peter. it has been about 48 hours, more than 48 hours since that tenuous truce between israel and hezbollah here in lebanon took hold and it appears to still be holding. that's despite accusations of reported violations from both sides. the israeli defense forces, the idf, conducted a strike in southern lebanon yesterday for the first time since the cease-fire took hold. and yesterday the lebanese military complained the idf violated the cease-fire agreement by firing on to lebanese territory. at a glance this sounds bad for this precarious peace. but despite the violations and complaints, the peace treaty appears to be holding. and thousands of civilians on both sides of the border are returning home, some after more than a year away. so, if this peace persists, there is still the question of negotiations to end the war in the gaza strip.

>> what was the moment like you found out you were best in show? >> it was wonderful. you never know going into these things. you know, everyone starts from scratch every day. to come out on top at the end of the day was wonderful. >> michael, how does vito celebrate the big win? late night around new york. what do you do to celebrate for a pug? >> he likes to go home and eat pro plan. >> that's a fair strategy. what was it about vito that really stood out? >> they have to be a great specimen of his breed. he's got this whole personality to him. he owns the ground he stands over. he has the perfect pug mug. he has the great attitude and a pug is supposed to be a lot of dog in a small space. he has all of those things going for him and showman. >> can you tell he was the leader of the pack? >> he stood out right away. there are seven great dogs in the end. we had a great time watching and picking winners. we all picked different winners. >> who? >> i was on the pug from the

welcome back this morning in the series "today in the wild." we have access in the bear rehab facility that is caring for the youngest of patients. >> bear sightings are on the rise especially preparing for hibernation. as emilie ikeda will show us, the interaction is more dangerous for the bear than you. emilie. >> reporter: i know we all love baby animals here, but after spending time with black bear cubs, these guys are my new favorite at the center in new hampshire which is a full fledged family effort to rescue

and rehab orphaned cubs. the work led by a man's work who created a lasting legacy. hidden within the tree tops in new hampshire are 18 black bears. jumping, climbing and snacking through the center's 20-acre closure. >> we feel responsible to do something for the cubs to give them a second chance. >> reporter: for more than three decades, dr. ben killam and his wife have rehabbed 600 orphan cubs back to the wild. what types of things lead the cubs to be handed over to you? >> they have no food and they travel and they get hit by cars. more vulnerable to hunters. >> do you return them to the wild? >> all they go back to the wild. they all have to go back. >> reporter: the cubs are brought to the couple by the agencies. each one stays until they are 18 months old. when they are ready to be on

their own in the wild. here, the bears are well fed and protected from threats and learn how to survive in the wild. >> what is it about bears that's fascinating to you? >> there's something about a bear that reminds us of ourselves. you can have a relationship with them. they have personalities. >> reporter: ben learned this first hand in 1996. she was abandoned by her mother and handed over for rehab. >> she came as a three-pound cub that was six weeks old. >> reporter: by using a tracking collar, he followed her in the wild. she's 29 years old today. >> the thing about my relationship with sqrty, she taught me all the complex aspects of bear behavior because i raised squirty. she treated me like a bear. >> is she having the greatest impact? >> she gave me a window.

>> does she remember you? >> she comes up to me. she lets me touch her. >> reporter: squirty, a big reason why the bears thrive. we got to meet the newest guests. look at that. who are in good hands with ethan kilham. >> how old are these cubs? >> they're about nine months. >> reporter: the cubs have all arrived separately over the past few weeks. these bashful bears begin their journey in the barn before graduating to the wooded enclosure. >> black bears are social. given time, all of these cubs will become friends. >> they all get snacks. i'll carry them up the ladder and put them -- >> put them on that first platform there. >> they're all watching me. >> leave them here for a snack. look at this view. >> reporter: the fall is a busy

season for bears. spending up to 20 hours a day doing a lot of this. but the push to pack on the pounds ahead of winter sometimes leads them to residential areas. >> no. go away. >> reporter: there are more than 46,000 recorded human-black bear interactions in 2022 with 18 states reporting an increase. >> these are where bears have scratched their bodies against this tree. >> reporter: the doctor is an ecologist. and co-host of "wild kingdom" on nbc. she says it's important we learn how to co-exist with bears and leave any interaction with the experts. >> people think bears are like cuddly animals you can bring home as pets or they are so deadly if you are near one, you will die. you see a bear, back away slowly and make noise so the bear knows you are there and won't be alarmed. >> reporter: at the kilham bear center, the family is ready to
