thanksgiving holiday travel rush. millions of americans are going to me on the roads or in the sky heading back home this weekend. aaa estimates this could be a record breaking holiday for travel. nearly 80 million will be on the move during this almost week long travel period which started on tuesday and goes until monday. one major factor that could complicate things, the weather. we are tracking a big snowstorm. leading us off, gary and angie. let's start with you, gary along i-95 in virginia. the rain just started coming down there. is that leading to any more traffic? >> reporter: yeah. it is a little rainy here outside. i-95 north here just outside dc. a bit of rain coming through the area. nothing that serious. folks we talked to here are still in good spirits. they have authority

their food and are back home. gas prices have seen a 25% drop since last year to this year. we are looking at $3.06 a gallon today. that is african average nationwide. a month ago it was $3.35. >> coming from suffolk, virginia and its been smooth sailing so far. >> reporter: where are you going? >> baltimore. >> reporter: what do you make of the gas prices in? >> it's lower so we are happy about that. >> reporter: and the rain is slowing it down a little bit here on i-95 in wood bridge, virginia. we have seen steady, steady clear roads throughout the afternoon. >> what about airports in you aren't far from dc's airports there. how are they looking in terms

of disruptions and/or delays or cancellations there and around the country? >> reporter: yeah. no problems at dca or dullus as of yet. it seems like the storm will just roll through and won't be that much of a problem. we will see some of the airports, detroit, buffalo, chicago, what we are seeing there are some serious delays because of some of the lake effect snow, some of the storm that are moving through that area. we have seen about 1800 delays so far this today. 32 cancellations so far. not bad on cancellation front. >> i like how you said people were driving back because they had food and enough family i think you said which brings me to angie. there are somewhere you say i have had enough, got to get out. how will the travel be? i have had enough family and it's my time to go. >> if you are from detroit or chicago you may have more family time in the future. those are a couple of the spot that will deal with the lake

effect snow. not a lot to complain about. yes, it's those pesky lake effect snow showers that will he about be with us. chicago, detroit you will see difficulty travel as far as travels concerned in the air and on the road. 75 and 90. those will be trouble spots. the snow has been ongoing. this is what it's looked like across the region for basically 24 hours now. we have plenty of alerts in effect. we have six million under the winter alerts. the new york governor declaring a state of emergency for those counties down wind of the lake where we expect incredible amounts of snow. over the next 24 to 36 hours we likely will see white out conditions on some of the roadways. really dangerous. those added winds making really hard for travel and when it's all said and done up to 70 inches of snow, especially down wind of ontario. we have places in northern michigan, i-75 likely difficult for travel and this is something that we will see last on top of that. the rest of the country dealing

with cold temperatures as far as south as georgia. >> all right. gary, thank you both. appreciate it. it's the biggest shopping event of the year. according to the national retail federation a record 183 million people are planning to hit the stores this thanksgiving weekend hoping to score on black friday deals and savings and nearly 132 million are going to do that shopping in person and do it today. joining us now is priscilla thomason from memorial city mall in houston texas. i think it's a record 183 million people are going to be shopping online. wait. 132million people today online and in person. what are you hearing from people there? >> reporter: right. that is the big question. you are seeing a lot of shoppers here as you can see but i'm not seeing a ton of bags in hands. so i think that gone are the days where people brought their shopping list and ticked off

off the gifts. instead a lot of people have been shopping before this black friday. we saw a record online sales just yesterday on thanksgiving with all the stores were closed. so a lot of folks are still coming in to scope out the deals but not necessarily with that long list of gifts to buy. take a listen. >> i normally don't come to the mall. i shop online but, you know, i'm just -- i was in the area and so, you know,ly see what everybody has to offer. >> reporter: and while there were some stores like target that had specific deals that you could only buy in the store today, for the most part you can find the promotions both online and in the store. allison. >> so for people who are looking for deals today and throughout the weekend there are some they should try to get today verses cyber monday, right? >> reporter: yes. we have all the details on that. so if you are shopping today,

tvs are the big buy today. they expected to be the most deeply discountied on black friday. tomorrow it'll be laptops and then cyber monday you have electronics and clothing and my rule of thumb is that even if you buy it today and then you find a better deal down the line, just return the more expensive item and keep the good deal you found. >> that is pretty good advice i will say. in terms of -- love a return option. should people worry abt the strike with amazon workers? it'll be at least through cyber monday and 20 plus countries? >> reporter: yeah. thousands of workers across 20 countries that are participating in the demonstrations, demanding better pay and just the better work experience. i will say that experts say it could impact some of the holiday deliveries. amazon known for those quick deliveries, two day so that could be impacted but this is the 5st the year that these

strikes have been going on at amazon. they say they are always working to improve. so, there you have it. >> all right. thank you. the season to pick out the perfect christmas tree but between the recent droughts and hurricanes should you be expecting to pay more for your fir this year? contessa brewer reports from the hudson valley. >> reporter: you know americans will bias many as 30 million live christmas trees this year. the biggest day of year to buy them, today. i'm about two hours north of new york city. they say they are holding the prices steady to where they were last year. that's in spite of northeast drought that grabbedda a lot of headlines though it really affects seedings. en in we have helene that just slammed north carolina so hard.

that's the second biggest producing state for christmas trees trees. they were hit really hard. the roads and the bridges were repaired in time for their mature trees to make it to market as well. weather is not the biggest factor for these growers. they are especially worried about labor supply and inflation. trees are a labor intensive crop. immigration really matters to getting enough workers and by far the biggest worry is consumers pulling back on spending. that's why 65% said they will hold prices steady in spite of paying higher costs. median price is $75 but that could change next year if trump

tariffs hold. so, the take away is if you are in the market for a tree, get out while the getting is good. it's time now for today's money minute. massachusetts looks to ban tobacco products for anyone after 2004 and a man who paid six billion dollars for banana is looking to buy 100,000 more. >> reporter: a group of massachusetts lawmakers is working to get support for a proposal that would ban tobacco based on a person's birth year. the state currently requires residents to be 21 to buy them. this generational ban would make it illegal for anyone under that age from ever buying pro ducts in the future. they plan to introduce it next year. canada accused google of
