park. a gorgeous morning and it is chilly out there as we bid farewell to november. thank you so much for starting the last day of the month with us. i'm kira klapper cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast where folks may be headed out for small business saturday, and i need to tell them actually quite a lot of things this morning. good morning kyra. good morning everyone. we of course are starting with those below freezing temperatures up there in the north bay, santa rosa, 30 degrees under that frost advisory. and so is walnut creek. but look at our camera here. under that dense fog advisory. some places out there in the east bay, reduced to almost nothing, about a quarter of a mile concord out there towards the central valley, even worse. and it's trickling into parts of the north bay as well. so please just be careful with that. and then we get scenes like this. just a gorgeous sunrise starting to come over. san jose mid 40s. so after we mix out of the frost and the fog should be a pretty nice afternoon. but there's more to

talk about. i'm tracking the possibility of some spotty showers for our sunday, and then we mix it up once again, dry and mild to start december. i'll wait for you in my full forecast in about 15 minutes. back to you. as long as you get back to that dry. all right. cynthia. thanks. the tree is lit in san jose. hundreds came out last night for the opening of christmas in the park. it's a decades long holiday tradition for many south bay families, but this year, organizers are worried they may not be able to keep the lights on next year, as today in the bay's jocelyn moran reports, the one thing they're asking christmas light goers to do to help them keep the holiday spirit going right. four. three. two. one. the tree at christmas in the park in downtown san jose is officially lit, kicking off the most wonderful time of the year. thank you guys so much for coming out to our tree lighting ceremony. i want to see santa, the lights, the food, the hot chocolate on full display. are you excited? yeah. hundreds of

people made their way downtown for opening night, including san jose mayor matt mahan. it's great to see the park filled with so many families that included yameen and his family. their first time here. we've been here. it was around 5 p.m. like we wanted to be here early. well, for some this is their first time at christmas in the park. others have been coming here for around 40 years. my oldest is 40, so now i'm bringing the grandkids. but this year, organizers are asking for the community's help. the 44 year old tradition has lost several major sponsors. some of our sponsors that have been with us forever don't have the means to keep supporting us, and that's put them in a bind. organizers are hoping to raise at least $100,000 to help ensure next year's christmas in the park event can run as planned. donations can be made at plaza de cesar chavez or by purchasing tickets to the drive thru light show at history park. our drive thru over at history park is this beautiful light show, and when you buy a ticket for the

crime is down there compared with this time last year. police acknowledging their presence has made the difference. everyone is out here to shop and enjoy the city, enjoy the restaurants, enjoy the sights. our police department is out here to make sure that no one does any anything bad. we want to be able to respond immediately to any incident that might occur in the area. police say they are exploring using different types of transportation to get across town, but note they are not allowed to use technology like drones to help respond to crime. and although those black friday crowds aren't what they used to be, people waiting outside in line overnight racing to grab the last item off the shelves. the long holiday weekend is already breaking records today in the bay. sergio quintana continues our coverage from union square. reporter throughout the day and well into the evening, the crowds of people in union square have been pretty consistent this black friday. shoppers have noticed

too. we come to san francisco about 2 or 3 times a year to visit, and this is probably one of the best times we've ever we've seen since we've been here. just as far as the city, the liveliness, the cleanliness. some business owners say they're also noticing a renewed buzz around union square. the energy is back in san francisco. people are wanting to go out. people are excited to be out again in san francisco and downtown, especially john constan jr with john's grill, says reservations through the holiday weekend filled up quickly. plenty of people are also packing into retailers enticed by the traditional deep discounts we're used to seeing on black friday. there are lots of people out here at union square on this black friday, but we have noticed something very interesting about a lot of the people out here. most are not carrying shopping bags. and people wee asked say it's becaue they're expected to do a good amount of their holiday shopping online. yeah, because there's just more deals and more to see.
7:07 am
and they say instead of having sales starting today, they've seen retailers kicking off sales a few days before thanksgiving. there are still a few lines here and there across the bay area on this black friday, but it's just different now. when you think back to black friday's before the pandemic, people used to camp out beginning thanksgiving day to get a doorbuster deal, and they would flood into a store as soon as they opened to get that must have holiday item. let go, let go. stop it. fights would even occasionally break out between people struggling to get a last sale item in stock, but so far, not this year. recently, for the past few years, i'm just like, order some stuff and just pick it up like and i noticed earlier, not a lot of people. there's not a lot in line anymore. according to the national retail federation holiday shopping is expected to increase slightly this year by as much as 3.5%, but it will be a combination of in-person and online purchases. sergio quintana today in the bay. new this morning a terrifying moment for a man in berkeley. he told

in san francisco tomorrow night. much better in san francisco than buffalo. that snow is already starting to come down, and i wanted to take a second to explain it to people who may have never heard that term before. with that lake effect snow warning. so here's what happens. the water temperatures in lake erie and the great lakes is relatively warmer than that cold air that is coming from canada. the surface about 20. so that's not bad, but it's that cold canadian air that rushes over lake erie and that just becomes a snow maker as it brings all of that moisture and turns into snow right there for parts of new york, parts of pennsylvania and ohio. and it creates just situations like this where it just impacts people on the roads, and it just dumps on people's homes with that high snow rate. and here's how it looks as we go on. i mentioned that it already started snowing there. we're looking into later tonight, into tomorrow. watch those contours turning into those purples, dark hues, maybe even some whites. we're not measuring this in

inches. we are measuring about 2 to 4ft that are possible for people going out there towards buffalo. but i hear that they're encouraging fans to bring the shovels. so we'll see how that goes. we're going to watch those temperatures come down into the low 30s, the 20s. but it's that wind chill factor that makes it even bitterly cold. so please, just prepare for this. and if you can't make it out there, we invite you to that watch party here in san francisco. so let's bring it back home. we are starting with that frost advisory until 9 a.m, 30s and some low 40s, and also that patchy fog that i showed you at the top of the hour. so lots of changes here that we'll deal with throughout the morning and then into the afternoon. getting into a nice one with some hazy sunshine at times through about the early afternoon hours. but will stay dry for people hoping to decorate outside. getting ready for the christmas season. watch as we go. san mateo bridge south that's where the more mild numbers are going to be. 67 in san jose, maybe even getting into some low 70s down in gilroy. we're going to keep 50s and seconds up towards the east bay and into wine
