cold. they showed up in buffalo today. take a look. fans took part in raffles and contests, getting hyped for kickoff tomorrow. our anthony flores is in buffalo with a look at how the team is faring ahead of the game. good evening from a snowy buffalo, new york. the 49ers are here to face the bills on sunday night football. the weather is brutal. 2 to 3ft of snow is projected to fall before kickoff. the 49ers other major challenge the bills so far this season they're undefeated at home. reporter a thick layer of snow is blanketing the northeast this weekend. so much snow is expected to fall at highmark stadium in orchard park, about 15 miles south of buffalo. the bills are asking fans to help out on game day. the team is offering to pay $20 an hour to anyone willing to shovel snow to clear out the stadium before kickoff. this is not the only storm facing the 49ers. the team is in last place in their

division with a a five and six record. quarterback brock purdy is expected to be back under center after missing last game with a shoulder injury. even with purdy on the field, the niners have underperformed this year. a win over the nine and two bills would go a long way to try to salvage their season and keep their playoff hopes alive. but first, they have to tackle mother nature. they're obviously more accustomed to it than we are, but i've been in games where you know, it is those type of conditions and you got to just get ready for a grimy game, you know, lots of run game. obviously, the tackling is going to have to improve in order to give ourselves a chance to win. you know, and just playing playing to a higher standard than we've been playing at. kickoff is sunday night. 8:20 p.m. local time. 520 back in the bay area, and the game can be seen right here on nbc bay area. trying to stay warm in buffalo, new york. i'm anthony flores, nbc bay area looks kind of nice.

just a little flurries. but yeah anthony anthony has his tips. yeah. here's another look at the snow dumping across new york. looks similar in several other northeastern states as well. yeah. let's bring in meteorologist rob mayeda. rob it is still november, but i mean, from anthony's shot, it looks like, you know, we're in full blown winter. yeah, it is the perfect snow machine which is set up there. the warmer waters over lake erie, the cold, windy conditions above. it's the perfect ground for these snow bands to set up these strong lake effect snow rates, which just pile on the snow and throughout the day, we've been seeing this going from the simulation to the reality you see here on the radar. really, areas south of buffalo. downtown buffalo, not so bad, but orchard park, that's right. where highmark stadium has been throughout the day. really nonstop snow. now, what's interesting over the next 24 hours is we're beginning to see a little bit of a wind shift. so notice during the day tomorrow, the time stamp up there, a bit of a northwest wind should start

oyster point in south san francisco, with the details. the coast guard received a mayday call around 840 this morning, saying that a 14 foot long boat had been hit by a wave and 18 people were in the water. oyster point marina harbormaster jim smith says the rescued people were part of a club rowing in a large platform kayak. the harbor patrol rescued 15 people and the brisbane harbor master and police department located the remaining three people in the water. he says the rescued included a few children. we talked to the captain of an oyster point fishing charter, who says kayak rescues are not uncommon. it happens a lot. there's a lot of kayakers that come out and they underestimate the tides, the weather. you can get in a lot of trouble really quick out here. i myself have rescued numerous kayakers out here that get in trouble. they get out there and all kinds of kayaks and they can't they can't manage the tides. the harbor

master says all of the rescue people were wearing life vests. they were all returned to the oyster point marina, where they were wrapped in blankets and evaluated. none reported any medical concerns. while fishermen here tonight say that it wasn't a particularly treacherous day out on the sea. it was very cold. the waters are about 51 degrees at oyster point marina. marianne favro, nbc bay area news. thank you. marianne. a burlingame man is in the hospital tonight after police officers shot him. it started early this morning just before 3 a.m. police got a call reporting gunshots on north san mateo drive near an apartment complex. and at the scene, police say officers saw a man walking in the intersection when the officers approached him, he pointed a gun, then ran away. officers found him a few blocks away on bayswater avenue, and there they say the man was holding a gun and yelling in the street. police tried to get him to drop the gun, but when he wouldn't, they shot him. the man was taken to the hospital but is expected to be okay. the san

jose state women's volleyball season has come to an end. it's been a rough season because of the controversy surrounding a member of that team who was transgender. now, late this afternoon, the team lost its final match in the mountain west conference tournament and it's an ace for colorado state. the rams rewriting their legacy. spartans battled colorado state in the championship slot of the mountain west conference. they advanced after boise state forfeited its semifinal game rather than play a team with a transgender athlete. ncaa rules allow transgender athletes to compete under certain conditions, but earlier this month, a group of mountain west players filed a lawsuit. local transgender advocates say they fear that hate for trans athletes could spread. you know, the last thing we want is this focused hate to spread to all trans folks under any condition. you know, if you start hating trans women and being against

trans women playing women's sports, what then? you know, what about trans women in the workplace? now, those who filed a lawsuit say it's got nothing to do with hate. it's about biological males posing a safety threat to teammates and opponents. this week, a federal court ruled that transgender players were allowed to play in the mountain west competition for those in support of the lawsuit. this is just one setback. these women have done everything they possibly could to allow leaders and even judges to intervene and do the right thing at every single level. leadership has failed them. in all, san jose state received six forfeit victories because of boycotts from mountain west opponents this season. well, we now know the names of the three college students killed in a cyber truck crash in piedmont this week. the three have been identified as sean dickson, jack nelson and krista tsukahara.

now, there were four people total in that cyber truck that crashed into a tree early wednesday and caught fire. they all graduated from piedmont high last year and were home from college for the holidays. now at the scene of the crash, a growing memorial to the victims. the lone survivor, 20 year old jordan miller, who is currently enrolled at the university of wisconsin-madison. the mayor of piedmont and the families of the victims are asking for privacy during this time. another controversial pick for president elect trump's leadership team. this time, it's his pick to head the fbi. mr. trump announced late this afternoon his nomination of kash patel. patel is or was the chief of staff to the acting secretary of defense during mr. trump's first term. the president elect called patel a brilliant lawyer, investigator and america first fighter on truth social. today, critics are alarmed. patel has supported conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and the so-called deep state, and has labeled journalists traitors. patel will need to be confirmed by the senate before becoming the director of the fbi. well,

president elect trump also named his pick for ambassador to france today. he's nominating charles kushner for that role. kushner is the father in law of ivanka trump and a real estate developer on truth social. trump called kushner a tremendous business partner, said he will be a strong advocate to represent america. back in 2005, kushner was sentenced to two years in prison for tax evasion, witness tampering and making illegal campaign donations. mr. trump pardoned kushner back in 2020. well, the holiday decorations are up across san francisco, and that includes at chase center and thrive city officially kicked off its winter wonderland celebrations tonight. nbc bay area's alyssa goard was there as revelers got into the spirit of the season with a mix of warrior spirit and classic holiday charm. the folks at chase center tell us there were more than 2000 people here at thrive for city the holiday winter tree lighting, and those attendees were treated to a couple of different surprises. first of all, a countdown to that tree lighting from the one

ended in chaos this afternoon. police had to use pepper spray on the players after a fight on the field. it happened after michigan upset number two ranked ohio state at ohio stadium. you see in the video michigan players attempting to plant their flag in the field. ohio state players went into that confrontation followed. several players can be seen shoving each other, throwing punches. police eventually came in, broke up the fight, and that's when they used the pepper spray. here's what the coaches said about it in the post-game press conference. i was emotion on both sides. it can't happen. so, you know, rivalry games get heated, especially this one. it's the it's the biggest one in the country. so we got we got to handle that better. ohio state's campus police department says they're going to investigate the fight. well the holiday shopping

season is in full swing. and while black friday and cyber monday typically get the attention, small business saturday gives shoppers a chance to support small and local businesses, and events are happening all over the bay area today. you can see two of them right behind me in pacifica and also san rafael. nbc bay area's christie smith spoke with shop owners and vendors in pacifica, who shared how much it means to their business. there's plenty to see and choose from at malt and stoned in pacifica. we are celebrating small business saturday. it is the biggest holiday we all celebrate year round. the shop on palmetto avenue is welcoming customers and there are pop ups outside. brick and mortar and pop-up participation. and it is happening all throughout palmetto and francisco and beach boulevard. shopping small is like such an intentional act that we really, really hope people will take a part of, especially when we're competing against the big box stores. kim hari came out to find a few meaningful gifts. these are sustainable napkins and we just picked up some and are looking

for some little hostess gifts and holiday gifts and shopping local for the holidays. at champy's pies, the co-owner says it's a real opportunity to be seen. we get a lot of people who are like, oh, we never know. like we never knew you were here. so this is a great day of visibility. according to the national retail federatio a record 183 million people plan to shop in person and online between thanksgiving and monday. there's also a trend of early holiday shopping. many have completed about a quarter of their planned purchases, so this weekend can be key. i do all the artwork on all of our t shirts. i'm a biological illustrator by trade over at cotton crustacean today. aaron gregory talked about the excitement of people coming in and what small business saturday could mean. also, it's a really big influx of sales right at the beginning of kind of, you know, the last month of the year. and so it helps kind of set the precedent

south to north and our highs tomorrow actually pretty mild with the partly cloudy conditions. upper 60s around san jose, low to mid 60s from san francisco to oakland and low 60s around the north bay and out towards the tri-valley. storm ranger right now picking up some light showers offshore of the regional view, though, shows you we've been seeing these showers, most of it aloft. sometimes referred to as virga or precipitation aloft. we're just a few drops, managed to fall through the dry air below, and reach the ground. and that's what we'll be seeing tonight. from south to north, from about midnight to about sunrise tomorrow. a few more there around the east bay diablo range. might see a few brief light showers in the morning, and then by the afternoon we begin to get those clearing skies so a chance we could see a few areas of showers into early tomorrow. but after midday tomorrow, look at that 7-day forecast storm chances. stay off to the north. rain chances mostly limited to the pacific northwest as high pressure for us weakens those storms on approach. so beyond the light

members of my chemical romance back in 2004. shortly after, he replaced the drummer, the rest is history. he once told the alternative press one of his best memories was playing a sold out show at madison square garden. brier was 44 years old. a cause of death has not been released. well, thieves across the country are tapping into the supply chain to steal goods. they're breaking into warehouses, raiding trains and overtaking shipments headed to stores. and experts say this could potentially lead to higher prices for all of us. here's nbc's priscilla thompson. at first glance, it looks like business as usual. a pallet of goods pulled to a dock for loading, but look a bit closer. that garage door has a hole cut in it. the men unloading the goods are thieves who walked away with half $1 million in stolen electronics just outside dallas, police say amid the holiday shopping crush, burglars are now targeting warehouses. semi trucks and trains, with monday expected to be the peak

day for criminal activity. we have about a four day period where the freight terminals, the ports, are thinly staffed and very quiet and that's when the criminals like to strike. this video appears to show thieves crawling on the floor during a break in at a computer warehouse in north carolina this month, just weeks after dozens of criminals were seemingly caught on camera raiding this freight train in chicago. it's very lucrative for them. it's low risk for a lot of prison time in their eyes and high, very high reward. a truckload of liquor could be worth a half $1 million. last quarter, cargo net recorded a 14% increase in cargo theft across the u.s. and canada, totaling more than $39 million. the hottest commodities, alcohol and electronics, the majority of which are stolen from california, illinois and texas. and now experts say fraudsters are becoming more sophisticated, even hacking into email accounts to coordinate fake shipment

edition of nbc bay area news. there's travel trouble on one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. a monster snowstorm out east is expected to cause a ripple effects across our nation's airports. a live look at sfo. things aren't too bad tonight. 158 flights delayed today. just two canceled. but at airports like newark and boston tonight, it is a different story. the paralyzing snow hitting parts of the northeast. nbc's george solis has a look. tonight, a major snowstorm is wreaking havoc during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. the storm slamming the great lakes region in northwestern pennsylvania. snow is falling as fast as three inches an hour, causing whiteout conditions with over 3.5ft of snow already on the ground. plows are struggling to keep the roads clear. snow snarling traffic and stranding hundreds of cars for hours. portions of interstate 90 completely shut down from ohio to new york. some

across the country are already feeling winter's wrath, with nearly 70% of americans said to be at freezing or below. back in buffalo, residents bracing for more snow. it's buffalo. bring it on. economists say the early read on black friday spending is one for the record books. american consumers already spent around $11 billion in sales online. shoppers increasingly opting to do most of their spending online where sales were up nearly 15%. some are wondering what the black friday numbers tell us about the overall economy. experts say the economy is robust, but many shoppers have inflation and budgets on their minds. the fact that consumer spending is showing up strong for black friday is quite consistent with the idea that the consumer is continuing to be engaged in this economy. inflation is still pretty high. i find certain items i mean, prices have definitely gone up. so, you know, definitely limits how much

you want to get what's on the horizon. cyber monday, it's coming up and the deals in the shopping are expected to continue. well, president elect donald trump is threatening tariffs on a handful of non-western countries if they abandon the u.s. dollar. brics is a coalition of countries like russia, india and china, and it mainly uses the u.s. dollar for trade. but in recent years, members of brics have talked about creating a new currency for trade. this morning, president elect trump posted a statement on truth social. he said he would impose a 100% tariff on brics countries if they move away from the u.s. dollar. brics countries like india and china are some of the largest trading partners for the u.s. the prime minister of canada is back home now after an urgent meeting with president elect trump on monday. trump said he would impose a 25% tariff on all goods from canada and mexico. he wants the two countries to stop the arrival of undocumented migrants and drugs from the u.s, from the borders of the u.s, so prime minister trudeau urgently met mr. trump

last night over dinner at mar a lago. trudeau shared this photo of them thanking mr. trump for meeting with him. trump called the conversation productive but did not signal a retreat from his statements on tariffs. the u.s. trade representative says canada is the third top supplier of goods to the u.s. small plastics are creating a big problem big enough to get the attention of leaders around the world. next week, the united nations is expected to unveil a global plan to end plastic pollution. senior investigative reporter bigad shaban explains how this could eventually impact what you eat and the safety of vulnerable wildlife across the bay. this california sea lion is recovering from wounds so deep they cut right to the bone. he was nearly strangled by an almost indestructible predator. this plastic. see this big indentation in the skull? veterinarian doctor kara field says she sees these kinds of

injuries on an almost daily basis. it's literally making a dent in the bone there, slowly slicing its way into it. let's try this small cone. she's the medical director for the marine mammal center on the coast of sausalito, tagging the rehab facility has treated more than 20,000 ailing animals, including those entangled in plastic. about 11 million metric tons of plastic waste find their way into our oceans each year. that's enough trash to fill half a million dump trucks. and the flow of plastic is expected to triple by 2040. it's costing a lot of lives of these animals that are not used to this threat in their ocean environment. plastics are changing the appearance of our everyday world. plastic production largely took off in the 1950s and is credited with creating life saving medical devices and safe packaging for food. but plastics durability has led to an increasing amount of pollution. just one plastic

bottle can take up to 450 years to decompose. in fact, it's estimated that most of the plastic ever made around the world still exists, and the effects on wildlife have been devastating. plastic entangling birds, turtles and dolphins. whales have even washed up dead with stomachs full of plastic garbage bags. but lurking in our oceans is arguably an even bigger threat. what's worse than all that plastic we can see? microscopic plastic? we can't. they just get weathered and fragmented into smaller and smaller pieces. margaret spring is the chief conservation and science officer at the monterey bay aquarium, where researchers have been diving into the impacts of microplastics. they partnered with other scientists to operate a small, remote controlled sub and sample more than 26,000l of seawater off the monterey coast, searching for the prevalence of plastic. what we found in every depth was that

microplastics were in the water column. so you found traces of plastic everywhere. everywhere, as far down as 1000m. light can't even reach here, but plastic can at these dark depths, floating microplastics look almost identical to these tiny specks of protein called marine snow, that sealife rely on for food. so the plastic gets eaten up to wreaking havoc in our oceans and eventually our own bodies. plastic has been found in human blood, breast milk, even our brains. the long term effects on humans and wildlife are still unclear, but plastic continues to be part of our own diet. 1 in 4 fish sold at markets in california and indonesia contained plastic or other man made debris, according to testing by researchers at uc davis. i just ate a plastic bag. oh, see, that's not good. to explain the threat to kids, the monterey bay aquarium set up a giant arcade game where players take on the role of sea

creatures as they try to avoid eating microplastics. i ate just part of a bottle. it doesn't seem like there's a way to actually win this game. i don't think we're winning, but we are learning. oh, this is interesting. the aquarium is also partnering with scientists at stanford to test river water, beach sand, even whale feces for microscopic signs of broken down plastic. you can't even see it, right? we actually need a set of policies that reframe the way that we're doing business as a planet with plastic. ecologist doctor douglas mccauley has spent the past decade studying the impact of plastic pollution. this is not a problem that we can solve city by city, county by county, country by country. that's effectively what we're trying to do right now. and it's not working. the current patchwork of solutions is never going to end plastic pollution. it just simply won't. which is why the united nations and 167 of its member countries, including the u.s. india and japan have agreed to strike a

legally binding agreement by the end of this year to end plastic pollution. the problem is finally got so bad that we've realized that we can't let it go on into the future. mccauley and his team of researchers at uc berkeley and uc santa barbara created an online interactive tool using data and artificial intelligence to predict how certain policies can help shrink the world's growing pile of plastic. they've met with roughly 30 nations to explain how a few global changes could reduce plastic waste by more than 90% over the next 25 years. reforms like capping the amount of plastic produced and requiring new plastic products be made with more recycled materials. it's not too late, but we have to do it now. it won't be easy. one thing more resilient than plastic is our reliance on it. despite a messy history, deep wounds and a sea of trouble, the plastics industry association tells us it

during the season of audi sales event. store help fill them up on thanksgiving. nbc bay area's joe rosato jr. explains how it all unfolded. reporter at the north end of the golden gate bridge, the quaint town of sausalito is a mixed bag. it's a town of tourists and locals. some residents liveve on land. some live on the water, so it makes sense. dennis green's store also straddles two worlds. it's a mix of vintage and new product. basically, things that i like. his shop on bridgeway is called carl the store. we named the store after the fog and then we sell lots of candles and vintage clothing. this is like my man cave. back in 1953, a company

called space food products. among his collection of vintage stuff was an old sign. yeah, i had an antique sign in the window. it says ruth's homemade pies. sometimes visitors would come in asking what kind of pies he sold, and i'd have to tell people, we don't really sell pies. it's just a vintage sign for sale. until one day about four years ago, we had a woman that showed up and said, what kind of pies do you sell? one visitor didn't appreciate green's explanation, and she said in her most serious voice, if you don't take the sign out of the window while i'm standing here, i'm going to the police department and city hall and report you for false advertising. they're up for grabs. and that's when green's wife, catherine, baked up a plan. my wife was in the store at the time, and she turned to me and goes, screw her, i'm going to go get my home bakers license. a few blocks away, in her kitchen, catherine green started making pies and selling them in the shop. i think i was just doing it for fun in the

beginning, but then the pandemic hit and turns out people stuck at home needed pie. people couldn't leave their homes. they wanted to do nice things for people. so being able to drop off a pie on somebody's doorstep was a really nice gesture. one second and another dash of fate. kate lost her job during the pandemic, and she comes to me and she goes, oh my god, what are we going to do? and i said, well, we're doing it. you're going to make pies, and we're going to sell them in the store, d everything's going to be cool. so slice of sausalito was born in the couple's kitchen, and then when this thing started taking off, we redid our kitchen and put in two other ovens. so now we have three ovens. those three ovens are busy baking cherry key lime pie, pumpkin pies, midwestern recipes handed down from catherine's mom and grandmother. there's a bit of nostalgia when people taste our pies because it it tastes like what mom used to make and do the sugar. this week, catherine and her helper lola will turn out

return their seats to the original upright position. earlier, the airline says the changes to reduce the risk of injuries from turbulence. well, a busy saturday for spacex. we're talking two launches in one day and liftoff. go, spacex, go! falcon goes. starlink. you just watched the falcon nine rocket take off from cape canaveral in florida this morning. the rocket dropped off 24 starlink satellites into earth's low orbit. the launch was part of a doubleheader for spacex. another falcon nine rocket lifted off from the vandenberg space force base on the central coast this morning. it dropped off 20 more starlink satellites, along with a set of u.s. spy satellites for the national reconnaissance office, or nro, celebrating small business saturday in san rafael. the annual holiday of lights and winter wonderland is a popular draw. each year, especially for families with small children. in addition to the festive lights, people could peruse holiday exhibits, food trucks, local merchants, lots of activities for the kids, including, of

off from the averages this time of year, which is actually pretty close to 60 degrees. one number should jump out at you. san jose was 68 degrees today and early next week we could see 70s around the santa clara valley. christmas in the park right now. dry, 57 degrees with partly to mostly cloudy skies moving in from the south, 48 degrees in dublin as we head over to san rafael, 51 degrees as we begin to see mid and high level clouds increasing. 53 in san francisco and the cloud cover on the increase tonight will keep those overnight temperatures from dropping too much. we don't have any frost advisories tonight. some of the north bay valleys though may briefly touch the upper 30s as we move forward into tomorrow morning. cloudy start to sunday and very likely a few sprinkles or brief light showers moving from south to north. by around noon, we'll begin to see some clearing around the south bay mid to upper 60s. as early as lunchtime in san jose tomorrow and mid 60s from oakland over towards dublin and again tomorrow from san jose

southward. a chance of those upper 60s, maybe close to 70 around morgan hill, down towards gilroy. so first up we have the cloudy skies and for the most part, the rain that's showing up here on the radar is above 8000ft. there's drier air below, so a few raindrops are managing to reach the ground, but not quite as much as what the radar is showing here. but there is enough out there as it comes up from the south, 1 a.m. to 7 a.m, you can see how those brief light showers will move through from south to north. another chance here. mid-morning around looks like the diablo range. a few more here. moving up toward the santa cruz mountains, but after lunchtime, not only the clouds start to thin out as more of that moisture heads northward, but the shower chances leave the forecast as we head through sunday afternoon and through monday, and they're going to stay out of the forecast for a while. you can see how high pressure keeps the storms and the rain chances staying to the north. next best chance might be right there on saturday, but watch what happens as this cold front kind of falls apart as it crosses the finish line there. so best totals for

rainfall over the next seven days will be likely north of mendocino county. and it shows up like that. you see the rain in the pacific northwest around the bay area that is really not what you expect to see for the first seven days of december. and the 7-day forecast will keep temperatures in the 60s around san francisco. it's inland area, though you'll see the temperatures climbing into the low 70s. this will include san jose, i think tuesday and wednesday, low to mid 70s, maybe down towards morgan hill for the first half of the week and then stay tuned next weekend may see some showers around the north bay, but no big rain totals like we had about two weeks ago. those storms for now are staying too far to the north. okay, rob. thank you. the warriors looking to snap their losing streak against the suns. sports is nex.
