close. he's accused of killing tech ceo bob lee. we are live in san francisco with the final steps before the jury starts deliberations. and a stunning reversal. president biden pardons his son, hunter biden, clearing years of legal trouble. but now the backlash following that abrupt change, of course, coming from even fellow democrats. plus, legally protecting california head of the trump presidency, the steps being taken today, some argue, may keep the state trump proof. this is today in the bay. good morning to you on this monday.
6:01 am
i'm marcus washington and i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for laura garcia. and welcome to the first monday in december. we hope that it's off to a good start for you. we are dry so far. yeah. and it's going to be dry for the next several days. but just cool out there. and so as we take a look at our live view in san francisco, no fog as of right now. and we're going to see in some spots in the inland area, some reduced visibility. but the main concern today will be our air quality. it's a winter spare the air alert day. so that means no wood burning and doing anything that may add to the pollution already out there in the air. and it is a dry start to december. we're going to continue to see a mix of sun and clouds in gilroy. it is a cool morning start with some low 40s. we're headed for close to 70 degrees for today and we'll see some 70s for parts of the south county, while much of the rest of the bay area stays in the 60s. we'll talk about what's
6:02 am
ahead for the rest of the week. but, mike, we're returning to familiar patterns. yeah, as far as the volume goes and where it drifts around, right on schedule, we're seeing that first burst in san jose start to ease up for those speeds. the second one should kick in in about 40, 35 to 40 minutes. for that one. same section of north 101 that will stick for the morning commute, and it will continue to build. no surprises for the east bay. a little slowing here for 880 south down through hayward and the build heading down toward union city shows up. we'll see more traffic across san mateo bridge without any drama right now. we do have a crash that showed up on the east shore freeway waiting for chp to give me updates, whether it's westbound, the commute direction or eastbound counter commute. typical slowing behind me highway. 437 and at the bay bridge toll plaza, it's filled in. of course. back over to you. thanks, mike. well, happening today, san francisco closing arguments will begin in the high profile murder trial of nima momeni. he's accused of killing cashapp cofounder bob lee today in the bay. ginger conejero saab. live for us this morning in the city. so, ginger, talk to
6:03 am
us about what could happen toda. well, good morning marcus. we expect the attorneys from both sides to really make a solid push for jurors to believe two very different versions of what happened. the night that bob lee died. prosecutors have argued all along that nima momeni stabbed bob lee to death in a drug fueled rage over an alleged sexual assault involving his sister and a drug dealer. his defense team, however, has said the stabbing was an act of self-defense. they claim it was bob lee who turned violent on momeny after the two did drugs in a car. who the jury believes rests largely on how attorneys will piece together one and a half months of testimony. now, that testimony comes from a range of witnesses, from investigators assigned to the case. bob lee's friends, his sister césar momeni, who is the tai to both men, bob lee and the defendant nima momeni took the
6:04 am
stand in his own defense in a rare move. the judge allowed jurors to submit questions to witnesses, including momeni. now, one of the focal points during juror questioning for many is why he didn't call 911 after he claims that lee attacked him. the defendant said he had no idea that lee was injured. now, this case has drawn national attention, both because of the high profile victim and the often salacious testimony involving an exclusive world of sex, drugs and parties that in this case has led up to the death of one man. now, once closing arguments end, the jury will receive the case. marcus. we can receive a verdict on this or hear a verdict on this sometime. this week in san francisco, ginger conejero saab. today in the bay. all right, ginger, thank you. well, also today, three men accused in the deadly shooting of a retired bay area police officer will be formally charged in court. kevin died while working as a security guard for a local tv news crew
6:05 am
in downtown oakland. this was back in november of 2021. we know that lauren gilbert, herschel hill and jediah mitchell, they will all be arraigned in oakland later this morning. those three face multiple charges, including murder. well, this morning we take a live look at the state capitol in sacramento, where today, governor newsom and state lawmakers will begin an unusual special session. the governor's goal in calling the session is to protect california's progressive policies before president elect trump takes office. california sued the first trump administration more than 120 times, with varying levels of success and anticipating similar legal fights with the feds. newsom is now asking legislative democrats to approve additional funding for the california attorney general's office. ag rob bonta will be in sacramento this morning as well, to announce new legislation to protect reproductive rights. in washington, meanwhile, that major late night announcement from president biden still sending shockwaves. as you may
6:06 am
have heard, the president is pardoning his son, hunter biden, who was set to be sentenced on convictions related to a gun purchase and taxes. today in the bay's brie jackson live in washington and brie. what can you tell us about the president's reversal after so many times saying he was not going to pardon his son? yeah. chris. good morning. so president biden gave his son, hunter biden, a full and unconditional pardon. and this move comes after the president had promised to not interfere in hunter's cases. president biden pardoning his son, hunter biden, who was convicted earlier this year of felony gun and tax charges, writing in a statement no reasonable person who looks at the facts of hunter's cases can reach any other conclusion than hunter was singled out only because he is my son and that is wrong. the decision marks a reversal from the president's previous comments. i said i
6:07 am
abide by the jury decision and i will do that, and i will not pardon him. mr. biden, ignoring questions from reporters about the matter. president elect trump among those blasting the outgoing president posting does the pardon given by joe to hunter include the gia six hostages who have now been in prison for years? such an abuse and miscarriage of justice? even some democrats say the pardon is the wrong move. arizona congressman greg stanton writing this wasn't a politically motivated prosecution. hunter committed felonies and was convicted by a jury of his peers. the pardon covers any potential offenses that hunter biden may have committed over a more than ten year period, beginning in january of 2014. typically, people have to apply, and usually they've already served a sentence. they've been convicted. this is not the normal process. hunter, reacting in a statement, saying, i will
6:08 am
never take the clemency i've been given today for granted and will devote the life i have rebuilt to helping those who are still sick and suffering. the pardon comes after the biden family spent the thanksgiving holiday together in nantucket, and marks one of the president's final acts before leaving the white house and public life. and hunter biden was scheduled to appear in two separate courtrooms this month for sentencing in two separate cases. but the pardon means that hunter will not be sentenced for those crimes. kris. i know we're going to hear more fallout as well. lots of people talking. thank you. brie. 607. this morning. now we want to take a live look. look at this downtown san jose christmas in the park. lights glowing this morning. meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect. weather wise, for anybody wanting to go out there and enjoy tonight. this will be a good time. nice and clear for us, right? and it's always a good time. i mean, we are just looking at this beautiful tree.
6:09 am
and that's just only a small part of christmas in the park. so if you are going to go out and enjoy it today or the next few days, the weather will look just like this. we're starting out our morning with some low 50s as we go throughout the day. it warms up nicely, briefly touching 70 degrees and then it temperature starts to dip very quickly as soon as the sun sets, so make sure you're prepared for that with extra layers. so even though we are going tsee highs in the 60s and low 70s for toda, our mornings and evenings will be very chilly. as we typically see this time of year. we'll talk about one thing i'm watching and concerned about in our forecast. that's coming up in a few minutes. mike is a look at where you can fill up for a little bit less. yeah. if you're returning to town, you have empty tank. go ahead and live it up in livermore. fourth best in the state now with 329 at marathon on home street. top number here. next is marine county will find their best price at 363 in mill valley at arco on redwood highway and at the bottom in the south bay. san jose's low is 371 at dimond gas
6:10 am
and market on south winchester boulevard. you can check what's changed while you were out town. gasbuddy.com helps you out there on the roadways. we'll look at the bottom of the screen. that's slowing. right on schedule has cleared up for north 101. that will kick in again in a half an hour. as we look at the east bay, we see typical build for highway four. no drama there for walnut creek interchange. the incident on east on westbound 80. it is the commute direction, but it's at the bear on ramp only. no lanes of westbound 80 are blocked. typical slowing through richmond and then get toward the bay bridge. we have the backup at the toll plaza. here's the volume in oakland where it's a good steady flow of traffic, but we're seeing more company here as the traffic returns from last week. back to you. thank you mike. all right. 610 right now. okay. so have you ever been to the golden gate bridge? and you haven't noticed the humming sound? well, it's happening when you. it's really windy out there. maybe you noticed that. well, it can get pretty loud there, but the solution is on the way. so coming up this morning, we're going to break down the timeline for a fix to silence it. plus it

day morning. right now, at 613, we're heading to santa rosa with a look at what to expect over the next several hours. we're in the upper 30s right now, and it is all clear. we haven't seen much in the way of any widespread dense fog, but we are going to see a mix of sun and clouds for the start of the day, and temperatures gradually warming and headed for the upper 60s for this afternoon, we'll get a look at all of our microclimates and what to expect coming up and looking on the peninsula. a pretty predictable pattern here, 101 at speed, just picking up the volume headlights, traveling north. if you're traveling south, see that sun's coming up. get ready for that sunrise slowdown. we'll track it. any impact it has coming up. well good morning. very happy monday to you. it's the first trading day of december. markets had a strong november. the dow the s&p 500 best month of the year. we get the big jobs number at the end of the wee we do have breaking business news this morning the ceo of intel pat gelsinger, says he is stepping down effective as
6:15 am
of yesterday. intel's stock is down 52% year to date. two intel executives will serve as co-ceos for now. stellantis. that's the company that makes chrysler. and dodge already was in trouble. now its ceo says he's stepping down. also, the biden administration today will clarify new restrictions on chips to china. nvidia had been moving higher on the understanding these new restrictions may be a bit more relaxed. america has been prohibiting china from using some american technology onfearn weapons or spying or ai. it's cyber monday, a holiday created back when people didn't have access to the internet at home. so they came into work on monday and spent the workday shopping. there are deals out there, notably with apple, the macbook pro, 14 inch down to 1600 from 1850. apple watches the entry level kind as cheap as 230 bucks. an apple tv box will cost
6:16 am
you 80 bucks at costco. the new york times consumer watchdog, meantime called wirecutter, tracked tens of thousands of prices over the year and said it discovered just 1% of the products it tracked were deals it could recommend over these holiday sales. it also warned some manufacturers have models that are just for black friday and cyber monday, like a tv maker for instance, may have a ridiculously low price on a big tv, but it's not the same tv that's been in the stores all year now. we've been tracking for products since before black friday, and look at this. three of them are lower. this cyber monday the jbl bluetooth speaker, same price. in fact, it's actually to its original price on the manufacturer's website. but the coffee machine, the little outside fireplace and the barbie dreamhouse also a price cuts today, and they're significant. the espresso machine is $100 less the less, and the solo stove is down $50
6:17 am
as well. we have in the past tracked these prices and discovered they barely move at all. and this one, at least our four completely random choices doing well, well, sometimes it's just the psychology of that little red slash. like, absolutely like, wait, that was the same price it was yesterday, right? it just has a red and it will be tomorrow. but you know but it'll be on sale though, right? exactly. yeah. thanks, guys. you bet. all right. new at six. relief is coming to help. quiet. what at times is a noisy golden gate bridge. for years now, especially on windy days, of which there are many in san francisco, the bridge has given off an unusual humming sound. it started back in 2020, when new slats were installed on the pedestrian handrails, which actually vibrate when the wind passes through. one bridge spokesperson just told the sfgate. new clips with rubber sleeves will be installed next year. according to the engineers, the rubber sleeves
6:18 am
will help to absorb those vibrations. i didn't realize it just started in 2020. oh yeah. all right. hey, guess what though? kris. it is the first monday of december. you know that, right? december 2nd. you know what that means. 23 days until both christmas and this year, the start of hanukkah. kwanzaa starts the next day, 30 days from today. it will officially be 2025. that's a new year. this year has just flown by. i know. well, still, for a few more weeks to go. so. all right. well, you know what happening tonight. a new round of holiday tree lighting in san francisco. yes, that includes the annual castro tree lighting ceremony. this is video from last year, which was super nice. happens tonight at 6:00 at castro and 18th streets. there's also a tree lighting on nob hill, including live music, hot beverages, and awards for local police officers. that starts at 530 in huntington park, across
6:19 am
from great grace cathedral church. have you all put your trees up yet? we did. yeah, we did our because we wanted to do it while our college kid was here. yes. yeah, but it was like, hurry up, put up the tree. hurry up. take your christmas card. hurry up. she's got to hit the road. yeah. ours is poised and ready to be raised. yeah. kari poised. yes. i love that. yes. it's up. i'm up to my first one. all right. all right. baby's all grown up. and you hosted a thanksgiving dinner that i did. 17 people. wow. wow. they grow up so fast. all right. well, maybe we can. now that the tree is up at home, we can head out and celebrate in san francisco. the castro lighting tonight is going to be very chilly. so you might want to make sure you get one of those hot beverages out there. it's going to be 60 degrees at 5:00 and then dropping down to the mid 50s later on tonight. all clear throughout the day, but it
6:20 am
will look hazy outside. we're going to have another day with unhealthy air quality for anyone with any heart conditions or breathing problems. this is going to be an issue because of all of the pollutants we're putting out there, and we don't want to add to it by burning the fireplace or any wood that just makes it even worse. so we're going to see throughout the day a hazy sky and the worst of the air quality will be in the north bay, the coast and the bay, as well as santa clara valley. all those low lying areas get that smoke trapped in as we get high pressure, and it just forces it down even more to settle in the valleys. and we are all clear as we look across the region. no rain anywhere close by and the storm systems that are out there in the pacific are well to the west of us, andill be driving farther to the north as we g go roughout the week. so we're going to continue with our dry conditions and slightly warmer than normal temperatures, with highs in the upper 60s and low 70s today. san jose and los gatos will head for a high of 71 degrees, and mostly upper 60s
6:21 am
for the east bay, with antioch high at 65 degrees and 68, in hayward and oakland, 66 in daly city, and as well as some mid 60s for much of san francisco into the north bay, where mill valley will reach a high of 65 and 68. in napa. tomorrow morning it's going to be just as cold as this morning, with lows in the upper 30s and low 40s, and it just continues as we go throughout the week with cold mornings and mild days. no rain anywhere across the region, at least for california all the way through the week. and then next week there will be slight rain chances and a slight chance of snow, but it really won't be thatig of a deal, is what we're seeing right now. looking out at least through half of the month. so we're seeing a lot of sunshine in the forecast and highs in the upper seconds. lows in the mid 40s. and in san francisco we're going to see upper 50s today with low 60s throughout much of the rest of the week. mike, you were looking
6:22 am
at the crowd in richmond. yeah. jagger the crowd heading out of richmond? i guess more accurately, over at the toll plaza from richmond to san rafael. westbound 580, your commute kicks in there. it's been here for a while at the bay bridge, there's movement, and that's good because for a period of time, things are kind of stagnant here. so that's good for both of these spans. heading across of course feeding off the east shore freeway, slowing through berkeley. highway 37. highway four shows the slowing. there we go. 242 shows a little brake taps, and now there's more build heading down to the walnut creek interchange. no problems, but a little slowing. just outside the caldecott tunnel, westbound 24, we expect that dublin interchange looks great, but there's a little bit of slowing that shows up over the last two minutes here, heading through pleasanton and towards sunol for south 680. southbound 880 has held steady with that initial slowing off of 238 and now down past the san mateo bridge, there's a build that we're about the speed limit through union city and fremont, though, and that first burst kicked off right on schedule. the second one starting to kick in a couple minutes early. maybe
6:23 am
for the south bay. will watch anything unusual. but here, northbound 101 in san jose shows your typical slowing. and here's that feeder coming in out of san martin. you know that volume is going to push up through morgan hill in the next few minutes, and we'll continue for the morning. back to you. thank you mike. well, first a blizzard, en a blowout. sunday. more than just a night to forget in buffalo. up next, the niners key injury that could just leave the entire season on ice.
6:26 am
the bay area and blizzards really do not mix. and we learned that the hard way last night on nbc's sunday night football, that lake effect was in full effect and the niners were no match for the buffalo bills. who are used to that sort of business. the bills came out firing and won the game 35 to 10, but that is just the start of a new set of worries for the faithful. the star running back christian mccaffrey suddenly went down with an injury all by himself. he didn't even get hit on that play. the team is now calling this a knee injury. we should learn more today when head coach kyle shanahan hosts his weekly conference call. but after the game that pain could be felt all around. i'm real disappointed. you know, we got a lot more pride than this. and you know, i know we definitely know we have some people out and stuff, but we can play a lot better than that. we have three
6:27 am
turnovers again. it's hard to win football games when you're not. we're not scoring in the red zone. you turn the ball ove. the niners next game is next sunday at levi's stadium, where they will host the chicago bear. hopefully sunshine for that. well a shout out to our bob redell who helped host last night's sunday night watch party at thrive city outside chase center. bob trd to distract the fans, but it's too bad the niners couldn't cooperate. he did his part. look, he did all right? and he's up this morning to all right. 626 for you right now. we got a lot more ahead for you at 630, including the unbearable tragedy for one east bay community, friends and loved ones mourning the deaths of three students killed last week in a deadly cyber truck crash. we have the new details emerging about those victims. and declining enrollment and budget cuts at california universities. the dozens of lecturers laid off as a result at sf state. stay with us. you're watching today in the bay
6:28 am
6:30 am
have fewer classes to choose from. right now, at 630, a major bay area university suddenly hit with layoffs. the growing economic uncertainty behind that move and the big loss this will mean for students. meanwhile, in the south bay, students and families await answers. the final list of school closures in one district, set to be revealed in a matter of hours and overrun
6:31 am
with geese. city leaders now have a plan. the new call for residents, just like you. this is today in the bay. thanks so much for joining us on this first monday of december. i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for laura and i'm marcus washington. it's time to get a look at that forecast for you this morning. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking what we can expect weather wise out there today. beautiful sunrise there. kari. yes. we're getting to my favorite time of the day. the sunrise. and we are all clear as we take a live look outside in san francisco, looking from oracle park. now, here's what we're expecting today. looking at a day where we will once again have to deal with some unhealthy air quality. it is a winter spare. the air alert day due to wood smoke pollution. we don't want to add anything to that. so we are also watching out for the possibility of dense fog and some of the inland area. but overall it's a dry start to december and we will see more of that. take a look at our live view in san jose. waiting for
6:32 am
the sun to come right up over those hills there. and it's going to be in the upper 40s in the next hour. we'll see those temperatures holding steady and throughout the day all sunshine as we warm up nicely into the upper 60s and low 70s. mike, you checked out some of the early slowing in san jose. you showed 280. this is 101. this is where the speed sensors were slowing down. quite a bit. let's take it to the map where we see northbound 101. it did simmer down. it was really focused for just a couple of minutes. no incidents reported. nothing on that camera. so typical build there for 101. coming up for the second build at about 640. i've circrcled the walnut creek interchange here. southbound 680 does show slowing down toward 24. something may have happened there as far as someone hitting their brakes, because this is sorting itself out. we're tracking that build there, and a lot more slowing at the berkeley curve. the bay bridge doesn't show anything, but look at the top of the screen. some truck with larger, bigger lights there. there may have been an issue in the in the maze. we'll check that out. back to you.
6:33 am
thanks, mike. well, developing this morning in a sad sign of the times, san francisco state is firing dozens of lecturers because of budget cuts and declining enrollment. today in the bay's bob redell live for us this morning. okay, bob, some of those lecturers there, they're actually meeting today to try to come up with some path to move forward. you are correct. good morning to you, marcus and kris. today some of those lecturers fired by san francisco state, they're going to come together for a support session to try to help each other look for things like health insurance and of course, new jobs, which unfortunately is tough to do during the holidays. we spoke with one of those who was let go, adjunct lecturer sean connolly. he says he will soon lose the job he's had for 17 years in the humanities and comparative literature department at sf state. the university did not disclose how many lecturers have been let go, but connolly estimates it's more than 100. a university spokesperson says lecturer hiring is based on student enrollment and confirms some lecturers will not be rehired in spring, saying, quote, as enrollment has declined. unfortunately, lecturer faculty are being significantly impacted as there are fewer sections to
6:34 am
teach, especially course sections which are populated by incoming freshmen. between fall of 2017 and fall of 2021. sf state saw a 10% decline in overall enrollment, and the numbers, unfortunately have continued to decline. connolly says. the firing of people like him will hurt the student's education, so for sure they're going to have fewer classes to choose from. they're going to be a bigger classrooms. they're going to lose people who are absolutely passionate and dedicated to the public mission of higher education. i put so much of myself in my, my, my work life into this. and, you know, i think like a lot of other people, i kind of feel a little bit at a loss. sf state is not the only california university dealing with declining enrollment and budget shortfalls. last thursday, cal state university trustees announced that cal maritime in vallejo, which has seen a sharp decline in enrollment, will
6:35 am
merge with cal poly san luis obispo. that integration is expected to be completed by july of next year. kris i interesting times. thank you bob. speaking of declining enrollment, south bay families tonight are expecting to learn the final list of closures for one struggling school district. the tentative list for closures in san jose's alum rock schools includes donald j. meyer, horace cureton, lindale and sylvia castle elementary schools. there's also one middle school, joseph, george and two academies. aptitude, which is spelled that way, and renaissance and other schools are being listed for consolidation. the school board presented the last list during a tense public meeting last month. the district now facing a $20 million budget deficit and the declining enrollment that bob was talking about at san francisco state. tonight's meeting begins at 530. also this morning, there is a growing memorial at the piedmont site where three college
6:36 am
students died last week in a tesla cybertruck crash. the victims have been formally identified. sean dixon, jack nelson and krista tsukahara all lost their lives when that truck burst into flames after striking a retaining wall and tree. all three graduated from piedmont high school. you can see the growing memorial at the site of that crash, and the lone survivor is 20 year old jordan miller, who is currently enrolled at the university of wisconsin. this morning, the national highway traffic and safety administration nhtsa, tells today in the bay its teams are still collecting evidence on the cause of that crash, but they have not opened a formal investigation. 636 right now and happening today in san francisco, closing arguments scheduled to begin in the high profile murder trial of nima momeni. now, prosecutors say he stabbed cash app founder bob lee to death in april of last year. this is in a drug fueled rage over lee's relationship with his sister. the defense argues that
6:37 am
lee actually lunged first with their client with a knife. once closing arguments wrap, jury deliberations will get underway. also today in foster city leaders there, they will hatch a new plan. this is for what some call a noisy and messy situation involving a hard to control goose population. yeah, critics say that these geese have been a problem for years over at leo ryan park. well, tonight, council members, they will consider adopting a new management plan. and supporters say that it will focus on non-lethal methods like habitat changes and noisemakers. the public is invited to weigh in at tonight's meeting. well, taking a live look at palisades tahoe right now. and the sun is coming up over the mountain, which has some snow. hopefully enough snow for people to have some fun out there. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the forecast there and here. morning. kari looks beautiful. wanted to show you another view of palisades tahoe this morning. and you can see the snow on the mountains there.
6:38 am
as the sun is rising this morning. it's been nice to get a pretty decent amount of snowfall there, but it's going to be dry for a while. getting there and back. you shouldn't have any issues with the roads and we're going to see our morning starts there in the 20s, headed for highs in the upper 40s and all sun throughout the day. and unfortunately there is no snow in the forecast this week. had to run this model all the way out to next wednesday to even get one inch of snow. so this is going to be as good as it gets for now. and then we'll have to wait a while before we get another snow storm. for the sierra. that means it's going to be dry as well for the bay area. cool temperatures, just not cold enough for anything to freeze just yet. we're in the upper 30s. low 40s across much of the bay area as you're heading out, but it will warm up and make it to the upper 60s and low 70s for today. as you're taking a look at the screen in your microclimate. much of the south bay will be in the low 70s for this afternoon. mike, what's happening now at the bay bridge?
6:39 am
we saw those bright lights traveling to the toll plaza. i saw a lot of slowing at the berkeley curve checked it out. a number of sources, nothing reported at or near that part of the maze. we do still see the slowing on the berkeley curve. it may just be the buildup. perhaps those metering lights are a little slower, but there's no problem, so maybe they can loosen them up a little bit because everything seems to be flowing across that bridge just fine. the build is down the east shore freeway, westbound 80 from richmond to the toll plaza itself. and right here, look at that. more slowing for southbound 680. so the volume is there for contra costa county coming down out of concord, pleasant hill and down toward the walnut creek interchange over here, i saw some slowing south 880 right around the coliseum area. whatever was going on and cleared from the sensors. and it's also not been visible on this portion of the nimitz. so we're going to continue to move on where we see a little bit of slowing south of there. and also the build for west 92 across the san mateo bridge, a couple of incidents in foster city, nothing major for 101. we'll track that though. and that little slowing north 101 here in san jose has kicked
6:40 am
in. back to you. thanks, mike. a special dedication coming up for the former speaker of the house. next on today in the bay, the new honor happening later today in san francisco for leading bay area lawmaker nancy pelosi. president biden promised he would never pardon his son, hunter, and then he pardoned his son, hunter out to the big board this morning. yesterday or last week, rather, we had one of the best weeks of the year. looks like we're off to a slow start this morning. plus, i would love to see us be a part of revitalizing this part of oakland. you know, this is a tough neighborhood. charting a new path following the passing of their boss. we're going to introduce you to a group of oakland bakers now fulfilling her vision and working to move the west east bay forward

confirmed the death in gaza of an american hostage from new york on october 7th of last year. terrorists abducted 21 year old omar neutra from his military tank crew. he was born and raised in the u.s, but took a break in his schooling to enlist in the israeli military. authorities say hamas terrorists are still holding his body, and yet more accusations against president elect trump's pick for secretary of defense this morning. scott mcgrew there was that devastating letter on

saturday, and now we have that report of misconduct against pete hegseth. right. and this is a new one. this is a new article in the new yorker that suggests trump's pick to run the military was forced out of previous jobs for sexual misconduct and drunkenness. and this was before he was working at fox news. the new yorker report, which nbc news has not yet corroborated, says hegseth was forced to leave two nonprofits after allegations of personal misconduct, financial misconduct and sexual impropriety. hegseth lawyer declined to comment both to the new yorker and the nbc news system on what he calls outlandish accusations. on saturday, an email to hegseth from his own mother was unearthed by the new york times, which his mother warns him to get help for his philandering. i have no respect, she said. for any man that belittles lies, cheats and sleeps around and uses women for his own power and ego. penelope hegseth went on to
6:45 am
say, on behalf of all the women and i know it's many, you have abused in some way. i say get some help and take an honest look at yourself. hanks mother told the new york times she immediately apologized to her son in a follow up email, and told the times he's a good father and husband. nbc news has not independently obtained that email, and has reached out to penelope hegseth for no comment for a comment, but got no comment. over the long weekend, president elect trump said he would nominate kash patel as the new fbi director. two issues here is mr. patel, a longtime right wing provocateur experienced enough to run the fbi. and secondly, perhaps more importantly, we have an fbi director, christopher wray, on your left, has three more years in his ten year term. now, new presidents replace a lot of people in washington. that's their right. but not the fbi director, who remains traditionally independent. so the new announcement means trump would fire wray, a man he
6:46 am
himself appointed just seven years ago. president hasn't fired an fbi director since the last time trump fired an fbi director. last time before that was when bill clinton fired william sessions for misconduct and ethical lapses in that time. that was the very first one. so there have only been two in all of history. almost certainly no coincidence. shortly after trump said he would replace the current fbi director, the president, biden said he would pardon his son. this may go down as the most controversial action of his presidency. after years of promising not to joe biden pardoned hunter. hunter. you remember, was facing possible prison time over tax fraud and checking a box on a gun form, assuring authorities he was not an addict when he really was neither traditionally kari prison time, but a plea deal to keep him out of prison fell apart. president biden wrote, quote, in trying to break hunter, they've tried to break

me, and there's no reason to stop there. enough is enough, and i hope americans will understand why a father and a president would come to this decision. all pardons are, in some way presidential interference with the justice department. but this is exactly the sort of mixing of the white house and the doj that democrats have been accusing trump of wanting to do. and marcus doing in the past. do you have it? all right. thanks, scott. well, happening today in san francisc, a special new tribute to former speaker. the house nancy pelosi. that's where the federal building on seventh street crews were there putting up the finishing touches on the 18 story building. it will now be known as the speaker, nancy pelosi federal building. she will be on hand for that unveiling and the new signage. the federal building currently houses pelosi's office, along with other state and federal agencies. well, it is the biggest online shopping day of the year, cyber monday, and experts say that americans will

spend about $13 billion to prepare some retailers invested hundreds of millions of new dollars for new shipping facilities like this massive fulfillment center for walmart, which opened six months ago in greencastle, pennsylvania. more than 1000 workers keep that plant running along 20 miles of conveyor belts. the size of 26 football fields. again ahead on today's show, we're going to show you the guide to finding your best bargains, including new steals and deals loaded with savings. well, sometimes the biggest challenge is just trying to find a way to move forward. yeah, and for the new owners of one west oakland bakery, tragedy turned the world upside down. this is when they endured the murder of their boss. well, then it became a sweetness they could have never imagined on the corner of fifth and brush streets in west oakland. this is a tough neighborhood. such an unassuming, sweet treasure to this community. there's a lot of

great history here as well. do you have all the cakes? the history of angel cakes doesn't go back too far, opening in 2016, but the story of how six women became its co-owners started with an angel of a woman of sorts. the original owner, jen angel. she was amazing. she was just an incredible person. jen needed part time employees. i could bake, and that is the story for most of the women of how they became part of the angel cakes family. what they didn't know their time as a family would be cut short. unexpectedly. jen died in february of 2023 from injuries sustained during a robbery outside of a bank in downtown oakland. the 19 year old responsible arrested and sentenced to state prison. one by one, everybody came in and we all just hugged each other and then we all started saying, okay, now what? from that tragedy, a light from their now angel, jen, the business was theirs. if they wanted it, we knew that if we were going to do it, we had to do it together. so
6:50 am
that was very clear right from the beginning. the past year and a half hasn't been a piece of cake by any means, but they are making something sweet out of the bitterness life dealt them. as a collective. i often struggle with the happy moments because i want jen to see it. like the first cake i did. claire and i kind of got swindled into making a wedding cake and you know, it was scary, but it felt really good. and i wish that jen could have seen what we did because it was it was awesome. we have coffee stout, blueberry, chocolate, matcha, strawberry. that's a really popular flavor. for now, the women just hope to continue growing the business, feeding a community that is now home. and i think that if we can bring some attention to this neighborhood and be part of that revitalization process, that would be really beautiful. beautiful indeed. you know, they do a lot of great work over there. when i was in there, someone picked up a wedding cake. they were doing a birthday
6:51 am
cake. and so, you know, they were doing a lot of things. so if you have some time, you're in west oakland, you might want to stop and get one of those cakes. you know why you were there. you said yes. so can you verify that there is a quality product there? yes. you can verify. yes i can one, two, three, four, six times over. i can tell not all in one sitting, but yes, congratulations. he had a little tummy ache. you know, i'm a growing boy so it's working well. kari, i was shocked to hear you say this morning that we're going to be dry for the first half. it looks like it's going to be a while before we see any rain coming in or sierra snow. so we are dealing with another issue that you get when it's been dry for a prolonged period of time. unhealthy air quality. but at least we are starting out with a beautiful sunrise and no fog here as we take a live look at san rafael, where the temperature has dipped. now down to 39 degrees, a cold morning start. but look
6:52 am
at the trend throughout the day. it's going to gradually warm up and head for the 60s for the afternoon and lots of sunshine that will continue. and once again, talking about the air quality, we had this from over the weeke. it continues today. it is a winter spare. the air alert day. that means that all of the wood smoke that's been put up there is what we're breathing in. so you do want to make sure that you're trying not to contribute to the unhealthy air quality. it will be unhealthy for sensitive groups. that means anyone with any kind of heart or breathing condition, you do want to limit time outside throughout the day, and much of the bay area will see that hazy sky and slightly more unhealthy air quality. so the weather set up here is also contributing to our unhealthy air quality, where we have a lot of high pressure, clear skies, and that just causes everything to sink down to the surface. any storm systems or low pressure that causes the air to rise as well out into the pacific and not heading our way any time soon. so today we're going to
6:53 am
see highs in the upper 60s and low 70s for the south bay, and mostly upper 60s for the east bay. danville reaching a high of 70 there, 68 degrees in hayward and fremont and san mateo will see a high of 66 degrees, also 66, in downtown san francisco and for the north bay, some mid to upper 60s, with sonoma reaching 67 degrees. tomorrow is going to be cold once again, and we just set this pattern on repeat day after day, cold mornings, mild afternoons, and lots of sunshine. it does once again look dry for quite a while as the storm track heads farther to the north. it may not be until about the middle to end of next week, before we get a significant chance of rain in the forecast. so you see a lot of sun icons here as we take a highs in much of the inlandand areas and spots like livermore and santa rosa in the upper 60s. and mike, now you're tracking a crash and slowing in the south bay. and they might not entirely be related. i mean, this crash here, north 101 at 880, it's on
6:54 am
the shoulder. it involves a larger truck and a smaller vehicle. so that might be a distraction adding to a little slowing right there. but the rest of it's a pretty typical build. 85 now shows slowing actually off the split with 101 up to as it crosses highway 17, a smooth drive for the south bay, and a build for 680 south through the tri-valley and the nimitz of course. back to you. thank you. mike. happening now. the thanksgiving holiday travel rush is starting to wind down at airports across the u.s. a forecast today to be the final day of unusually large holiday crowds following yesterday's epic numbers. in fact, just moments ago, the tsa posted that more than 3 million fliers pass through checkpoints nationwide. yesterday, the most in a single day in the agency's 23 year history. we'll be right back with a look at this
