>> we hope you enjoyed your holiday. >> yes, happy thanksgiving. >> we begin this hour with the biggest online shopping day of the year. >> as you and your credit card are probably aware, it is cyber monday and this year is expected to break records according to adobe analytics americans are expected to spend $13.2 billion and that's up more than 6% from last year. here to make it all down for us, nbc news business and data correspondent brian cheung is outside an amazon fulfillment center in new jersey. brian, this is considered the biggest day for online retailers like amazon, and it kind of feels like black friday stuck around all through the weekend and maybe even still today. are these fresh deals? >> yeah, well, look, people we've spoken to is the big discount and it will be cyber monday and it is the last stop to catch people's attention for what consumers expect to be the best time for discounting.

so when you look at the discounts and i'm talking about target, amazon, macy's and petco, you're seeing pretty big numbers in terms of the percentage off, 50, 60, 75% in some cases and again, these retailers are trying to make sure they get you opening up your wallet to buy things during this peak holiday season and outside of this amazon fulfillment center we saw in person just what it looks like when a potentially high and record-setting amount volume is being done. there's 14 miles of the conveyor belt zig-zagging in every direction all to get the packages to you on time, and i do want to mention that's very important because there are five fewer days to get your shopping done between thanksgiving and christmas. not trying to freak you out, though. >> just a little and i imagine someone at home and at work is still planning on shopping and hasn't done it yet and how can we make sure they're getting the best deals. >> some tips for those doing shopping on the cyber monday, for example, if you're going to

charges charges. joining us is mike memoli and in studio danny cevallos. mike, what do we know about how the president came to this decision? >> the white house said he made this decision this week end after spending the thanksgiving holiday in nantucket, but numbers news is reporting this was something he had not taken off the table as recently as june just days after his son was convicted of that first gun case, but two dates that are significant in driving this ultimate final decision, one is the election of donald trump in november. there was concern including we heard from the white house directly on this that the president's political opponents would continue to seek -- to investigate hunter biden going forward including a trump-led justice department, but then also those two sentencing dates that were looming on december, on the 12th and the 16th, the president making this decisions now spare his son from the

appearances and all that comes with it. >> the special counsel who brought these charges against hunter has issued a new filing in the california case, and it shouldn't be dismissed despite this pardon. walk us through. could that matter? is there a way to reverse this? >> i reviewed the filing. candidly, i'm want sure what the special counsel is talking about. it seems to be more of a procedural objection. they say in the filing we have not seen this pardon yet. we've just gotten the notice of filing and maybe they just need to see the actual document, but here's the deal with pardons. it is one of the broadest powers granted to the president. he can pardon federal crimes completely. he can essentially erase them. there's some dispute as to whether or not there are klatt rl consequences and a lawyer may be disbar but as for the prosecution itself it can be erased and that's what biden has done.

pleaded guilty. jamie komoroski's trial was set to start today in south carolina. she was accused of hitting a golf cart killing samantha miller and her husband just outside of charleston in april 2023. the lyweds were driving away from their reception. she was killed and her husband suffered brain damage and broken bones, but did survive. priya srithar, can you remind viewers how we got here and what kind of sentence does komoroski face now? >> this story was in the national spotlight because of just how tragic it was. this was supposed to be the best day of this young couple's life and moments before this tragic accident happened they were celebrating their marriage and then they were driving away, as you mentioned in a golf cart when state prosecutors then jamie lee komoroski came and was driving 65 mis per hour in a

25 mile per hour zone. her blood alcohol content they say was three times over the legal limit here in south carolina when she rammed into that golf cart and threw 34-year-old samantha miller, the bride, out of that golf cart. she was killed. her husband, the groom, eric hutchinson was ejected from that golf cart and sustained very serious injuries, as you mentioned, a brain injury and broke both of his legs and many bones in his body. she was in a year for about a year and bonded out in march and she's been on house arrest ever since then and she's facing three to 85 years in jail for these charges. >> and priya, we heard from the victim's family members in court just after this guilty plea. what did they say? >> reporter: yeah. it's been incredibly emotional listening to all of the pain and suffering they've endured since this tragic accident took place. many of them living with guilt. let's take a listen to what the bride's mother and the groom had to say about all of this.

>> she was light. she was love. she was amazing. >> you took the greatest human being i've ever met. she's not coming back. she's gone. she was my world. and i would give anything to go back. >> so right now what's happening in the courthouse right next to me here is that we're actually hearing from lee komoroski's defense attorney and they were talking about how she was on the dean's list and once she graduated from college she suffered from an alcohol addiion and since then she's tried to rehabilitate herself and she's not trying to play the victim in this scenario. she understands there has to be consequences and they're, sshlly asking the judge at this point for on the lower scale of that

three to 85-year-old sentence. so we will certainly be monitoring this and let you know how the judge ruled. >> certainly a devastating story for that family. thank you so much. the thanksgiving travel rush and preparations for the christmas travel scramble. if sunday was any indication people are traveling and the tsa broke the record for passengers screened in a single day that surpasses the record that was set five months ago after a july 4th holiday. nbc correspondent sam brock joins me from new york's laguardia airport looking empty behind you there, sam. over the weekend, though, not a lot of disruptions or cancellations, right? >> isn't that a wild juxtaposition, kate? the fact that you have these winter storms blanketing huge six of the country, the great plains and you have volumes like

you have literally never seen them before and you talk about the sunday, screening numbers 3.1 million the second time and yet i'm at laguardia airport, and do you know how many cans lagszs there have been in the last two days? two cancellations and o'hare has the most of any of the larger airports in the country, nine. atlanta, six. philadelphia zero. these are major travel hubs. if you broaden the scope of it, kate if you look at the numbers of cancellations in the country. it has been 3,000 or so cancellations and it will fluctuate. on know is, the highest volume day and it was 7,000 delays and 122 or so and 123 cancellations and yet the faa said from tuesday through saturday the largest portion of this travel window, 0.3% of all flights were cancelled and 1.2% of all flights were delayed and given the technological challenge that we've seen in recent months and

reproductive rights. they are proposing two bills, one that would protect a woman's access to abortion medication and another that would find local governments trying to infringe on a woman's right to an abortion. democratic lawmakers fear the trump administration might not be friendly to women's reproductive rights, as they say failing to plan is planning to fail, and we are planning this legislation is us planning to stay ahead of the curve, regardless of what the trump administration has in store for the future of abortion care. lawmakers are also proposing a $25 billion litigation fund to protect california's policies that would help the state doj respond to potential attacks by the trump administration on issues regarding civil rights, climate change, immigration and abortion access. the california doj sued the trump administration 122 times between 2017 and 2021, at a cost of about $42 million. governor newsom expects to sign this new

legislation before january 20th. closing arguments are underway right now in the high profile trial of nima momeni. he is accused of killing cashapp co-founder bob lee. our ginger conejero saab is in san francisco with a closer look at what's expected to play out in court this week. we expect attorneys to make a solid push to convince jurors of two very different versions of bob lee's death. prosecutors have argued all along that nima momeni stabbed bob lee to death in a drug fueled rage over an alleged sexual assault involving his sister and a drug dealer. his defense team, however, has said the stabbing was an act of self-defense. they claim it was bob lee who turned violent on momeny after the two did drugs in a car. who the jury believes rests largely on how attorneys will piece together one and a half months of testimony. testimonies have ranged from investigators assigned to the case. bob lee's friends, mohini's sister kesar momeni,

who is the tai to both men. lee and the defendant nima momeni took the stand in his own defense and in a rare move, the judge allowed jurors to submit questions to witnesses on the stand, including momeni. one of the focal points during juror questioning is why he didn't call 911 after he claims lee attacked him. the defendant said he had no idea lee was injured. this case has drawn national attention, both because of the high profile victim and the often salacious testimony involving an exclusive world of sex, drugs and parties that, in this case led up to the death of one man. now, once closing arguments wrapped, the jury will receive the case. we can expect or we can anticipate a verdict as early as this week. ginger conejero saab nbc bay area news. thank you. ginger. we have some slightly warmer weather returning to the bay area. here's meteorologist kari hall with the details. as we take a look at our highs for this afternoon, it will be warmest in

has reignited a civil war after a years-long stalemate. nbc news correspondent hala gorani joins us from jerusalem. let's start with the news from lebanon and what does it mean for the ceasefire between israel and hezbollah? >> reporter: the ceasefire is just a few days old, kate and for zinhle, and for several days now both hezbollah and the lebanese army have accused israel of violating the terms of the deal. they have accused the israeli military of firing on civilians trying to return to their homes. southern lebanon in charge of enforcing a resolution that ended the 2006 war has reported more than 100 violations by israel. what happened is that hezbollah today launched a rocket on an israeli base in a disputed area called the shiba farms and israel has called that a

violation of the ceasefire deal and has vowed to retaliate, and we are now hearing reports of israeli military strikes in southern lebanon on multiple locations. so this is happening right now. shaky ground is a good way to put it. on paper, this ceasefire is still holding, but in practice, as you can see there are exchanges of fire that are quite worrying, kate and zinhle. >> hala, let's talk about a different conflict in the region, the syrian civil war it had been largely dormant and rebels opposing the regime of president bashar al assad did make significant advances over the weekend. what's happening and why right now? >> reporter: well, it is connected to what's going on in lebanon with hezbollah and israel. hez bella has weakened. it's preoccupied with its conflict with israel and iran is also weakened and russia is involved in ukraine, so it doesn't have as much energy, time or manpower to support and prop up the assad regime. so what happened is that these

coalition of rebel forces including one which is an incarnation of a former al qaeda affiliate marcheded on aleppo, the success largest city like myself basically without a shot being fired almost, syria's second largest metropolitan area and they are now moving on another city called hama. so what's going on is there are air strikes from the regime and the regime assisted by russia on idlib which is a province north of aleppo and many concerns with what will happen as the country grapples with yet another explosive battlefield shift throughout the country. as you said, it was dormant and now it is very active once again, kate and zinhle. >> hala gorani, thanks so much. >> a blast of winter weather

(♪♪) teachers in the south bay are bracing for a big announcement tonight. alum rock union school district is expected to release its final list of school closures. the tentative list includes donald j. meyer, horace cureton, lindale and sylvia castle elementaries. also one middle school, joseph george, and two academies. aptitude and renaissance. other schools are being listed for consolidation. the school board presented a list during a tense public meeting last month. it said the list was a result of thorough review, with a committee of parents, administrators and labor representatives. it all comes as the district is facing a $20 million budget deficit and declining enrollment. tonight's

meeting begins at 530. a bombshell announcement from san francisco state university. the school is letting go. dozens of lecturers due to budget cuts and declining enrollment. the school did not disclose how many lecturers have been let go, but one professor we spoke with estimates it's more than 100. a university sposperson says lecturer hiring is based on student enrollment and confirmed some lecturers will not be rehired in spring. one of the impacted teachers explains how it may affect classes. for sure, they're going to have fewer classes to choose from. they're going to be a bigger classrooms. they're going to lose people who are absolutely passionate and dedicated to the public mission of higher education. today, some of those lecturers are planning to meet to try to chart a path forward. plenty of sunshine in store. this week. here's meteorologist kari hall with our 7-day forecast. we are in for a lot of sunshine as we go throughout the week, and we're also going to watch out for that
