a man goes missing from a cruise ship. the investigation now underway as the coast guard continues its search. what officials believe may have

happened before the ship's arrival to the city. plus, a boost for people trying to make it in the bay. the minimum wage increase set to come for south bay residents in one area and when it's t to go into effect. also, our climate in crisis now having a negative impact on your home maintenance. the reason your bottom line will soon feel repercussions as local extreme weather and what you could do to help stay ahead of it. this is today in the bay. good morning to you on this tuesday, i'm marcus washington and i'm laura garcia. we're going to check the roads with mike in just a little moment. but first let's start out with a look at that forecast. meteorologist kari hall tracking what we can expect. good morning. good morning. it is another cold start across the bay area with temperatures dropping down to the 40s. it is now 47, in san francisco and in san jose and 45 in palo alto. walnut creek, 41. but as we have this cool
5:02 am
morning, this morning, it's basically matching yesterday's temperatures. and then we go back to the upper 60s for highs and low 70s for much of the south bay. san francisco topping out at 66 degrees today. 68 in oakland and 66 in livermore. in gilroy today, 73 degrees. we will see more temperatures like this. we'll talk about if there's any changes ahead. and mike, you're giving us a look now at the golden gate bridge. yeah. for a while i was watching the crews as they got working and then they got cleared here. so the cones on the south end and san francisco side are clear. looks like there may be some crews clearing from the mid section of the golden gate bridge. so those crews are clearing. that's one hazard. you don't have to worry about over the next few minutes. but a new hazard just did pop up on the richmond center fell bridge. i don't know which deck which direction it is. chp should let us know that in just a couple of seconds. once they get back to my desk, no slowing shows up on either direction though. a smooth drive across the areas. there's construction on the benicia bridge. we're watching,
5:03 am
but no slowing. they should clear right on schedule here, as well as southbound 680 between acosta and koopman. there should be a crew there. i saw some slowing at bernal for a few minutes and that has cleared. i'll track the grid and see if there are any more crews there. as you head down through the tri-valley into the south bay, with no major issues. back to you. thanks, mike. well, developing this morning, a mystery aboard a cruise ship that docked yesterday in san francisco. one passenger missin, and it's believed to have been gone overboard. not to have gone overboard. that is. now. teams combed the waters for hours there today in the bay's ginger conejero saab. she's live for us in san francisco. so, ginger, what do we know at this point? good morning marcus. we do not know the identity of this person yet, but we do know that it is a 72 year old man who boarded a ruby princess cruise ship last wednesday before it began a five day voyage to ensenada, mexico. now, the ship stopped in san
5:04 am
diego before arriving in san francisco yesterday morning. but along the way, that 72 year old passenger went missing. princess cruises has released a statement saying in part. cctv footage has also been extensively reviewed and the ship was searched thoroughly seval times without success. having ruled out other possibilities. this is being treated as a man overboard incident. now, a report by the cruise lines international association, the industry's largest, says in every case where the cause of a man overboard was established following a careful investigation, it was found to be the result of an intentional or reckless act. there were some incidents, however, which were impossible to determine a motive. now also, according to kahleah, the cruise lines international association, there are about 20 reports per year of people falling overboard from cruise ships. it is considered to be the largest cause or the leading cause. i should say, of death on these big ships. while
5:05 am
the identity of that passenger has not been identified, princess cruises has released a statement sending its condolences to the family and friends of that passenger, who they say was traveling alone in san francisco, ginger conejero saab today in the bay. so sad to hear. all right, ginger, thank you. closing arguments continue later this morning in san francisco in the murder trial of nima momeni. he's accused of stabbing cash app co-founder bob lee to death in april of last year. prosecutors yesterday used a powerpoint with videos, texts and testimony to argue he had the motive, carried out the stabbing and then tried to hide his involvement. the defense presents its side today, which prosecutors will then bellowed to review. lee's family members say they're pleased with the job prosecutors are doing and are hoping for a quick verdict. honestly, we have no idea how we're going to manage that time. it seems completely untenable for us, right? it seems like the most anxious i'll ever be in my life. stay with nbc bay area,

both on air and online as we await the verdict. you can download our free nbc bay area news app to get updates on the case sent straight to your phone. and once the verdict does come in, join us for breaking news coverage on air or wherever you stream. for anyone living in santa clara trying to make it in the bay, the minimum wagege will climb slightly at the start of the new year. it will go from $17.75 to $18.20 per hour. this is due to the city's annual inflation index adjustment. more than a dozen other bay area cities will experience similar increases, and the statewide rate will climb to 1650 in santa clara. the height affects anyone performing two hours or more of work per week. that hike only applies to the city of santa clara, not the county. let's take you out to the east bay on this tuesday morning. live. look outside in walnut creek. folks, up and out the door already. we'll check that commute with mike in just a little bit, but let's talk about the forecast.
5:07 am
kind of a chilly morning out there. yeah, we are getting started with a clear sky and chilly temperatures once again. here's a look at where we are starting right now where we are seeing those numbers in the upper 30s and low 40s. and the north bay the coldest, with temperatures starting out at 39 degrees. as we look at the parts of the tri-valley as well as the south bay, we are going to see our morning start in the low 50s and then a live look outside in san jose. here's a look at our trend throughout the day, where we go from upper 40s to upper 60s and a mostly sunny sky. and then we take a look at all of our high temperatures across the bay area. we'll be up to 71 in morgan hill. that's one of the warmer spots compared to the mid to upper 60s. we will see elsewhere. and now turning to our climate in crisis. extreme weather is making owning a home even more expensive. home repair companies say hot temperatures caused spikes in ac maintenance.
5:08 am
frozen pipe damage is also going up in the bitter cold temperatures and flooding from big storms not only causes water damage, but you might also have to consider pest control when ants start moving into your home. experts say homeowners can fight back by focusing on regular maintenance to avoid costly emergency repairs. there is managing that tree trimming fixing caulk and managingtected, weatherstripping around all of your doors and your windows. and then wrapping pipes. and you may not be thinking of replacing your roof, but experts say they have a lifespan of about 15 to 40 years, depending on the type. so you might want to take time to check that out and make sure that you can keep everything inside your home protected. and we're going to post a link with more information on this story on our website, nbcbayarea.com. if you'd like to learn more, just click on the climate in crisis tab. and mike gives us a

look at where we can find some lower gas prices. yeah, we're looking around here. we're checking those prices. they've been holding steady over the last two days. two of the state's best five price points are in livermore. still, this is 3.29 for both marathon shops. one of them is on the south livermore and the other is on holmes. you might know them in your area. look for the marathons there. in solano county, we have the low of 365 and that's in fairfield. bond, fair market on walters road and in the south bay. cupertino's best listed is 372. that's at aria gas and market on stevens creek boulevard. you check for those subtle changes. gasbuddy.com will get you located, getting you out onto the maps. we're looking at the speed sensors and we don't have any change to those sensors, but i did get an update. chp says there's a disabled vehicle on the upper deck or heading over from richmond into san rafael. so westbound your commute direction again, no slowing shows up, but one lane might be blocked and there may be some flashing lights headed across the span. i'll continue to
5:10 am
monitor that. it's still early, so there's no real backup at the toll plaza. and they wouldn't use metering lights anyway. they would have to be a pretty significant issue. again on the span. not a major problem. the bay bridge just show a little more volume. we'll see how this tuesday shapes up. folks should be returning to work after last week. back to you. should be welcome back. laura. hey, i made it back at least. right? heilman 509 right now turning your workout into a work of art coming up next on today in the bay. how one man's effort to track his runs is actually going viral, and the stock markets hit new records. and a judge once again tells elon musk he cannot be paid that much money. and the holidays mean holiday light displays back in full force. find out what's new at one of the most epic family run light shows right here in the bay area. but first, we're moving the bay area forward with organizations. you can help this giving tuesday, this giving tuesday. join us in spreading holiday cheer to families in

13. we are taking a look at what to expect today in napa. starting out at 8:00. it's going to be 44 degrees, but look at how fast it jumps up to 55 degrees. only a couple of hours and we're headed for the mid 60s for later today. it's going to be a nice one with a quick warm up and a quick cooldown as well. we'll get a look at all of our microclimates in the forecast for the rest of the week coming up. and right now we're looking at those tail lights, the red lights heading away from us or heading toward the golden gate bridge after they leave san rafael, coming into san rafael across the bridge from richmond, that's where we have the one incident i'm tracking disabled vehicle blocks one lane as you travel over from richmond to san rafael. we'll check on those sensors and the progress coming up. well, good morning. very happy tuesday to you. new records on the stock mart. this has happened dozens of times in 2024. the nasdaq, the s&p 500 both at all time highs. now the dow dipped. and this if

anything shows you what a lousy measure of the stock market the dow is. there are only 30 stocks in there and they're weighted. so if one goes south it can pull the index down. tesla. i will get to that one in a second. intel shareholders apparently unimpressed or unconcerned about the surprise retirement of the company's ceo, paul gelsinger. he is the third intel ceo in about 20 years, and the second to resign in about the same time. intel making big layoffs as it tries to find its way. but one of the analysts that follows intel says it's thousands of south bay employees who remain should be okay. i think those who might be concerned about jobs or loved ones or things like that. i do think the company is as strong as it's been in years, even though it has had some missteps. i think the company is in a in a very good place. a judge in delaware
5:16 am
said for the second time that elon musk should not be paid that enormous pay package granted to him by the board of tesla, because the board at tesla is too far under musk's control. the judge ruled that earlier this year, then, tesla took the issue to musk's $100 billion pay package to the shareholders and said, all right, you guys own the company. should we pay the ceo millions of shares in tesla stock? and the shareholders said yes. tesla went back to the judge and said, see? everybody wants this. and the judge yesterday said no. again, it's a huge amount of money. but musk did do the things required in the contract to get that kind of pay. he boosted tesla's stock enough to make all shareholders happy and profited in the process. now, some criticized musk for making pie in the sky promises to boost and keep the stock high. but hey, it does the job. incoming president trump says he will not allow u.s. steel to be purchased by a japanese steel company. both biden and harris said the

same thing. u.s. steel says it needs the purchase to stay solvent. trump says he'll grant money and tax breaks. the u.s. taxpayer coming to the rescue. and a guy in toronto has gone viral with his stickman animation made by tracking his daily runs on the strava app. duncan mccabe ran pretty much the same route every day, changing up a bit to move the arms and the head. this is 120 separate runs. it's been viewed more than 25 million times. he found that, you know, doing these animations, it was better if you had lots of pictures, you know, as opposed to herky jerky, like the little flip books, right? but it means that much more running. so cool. it is fun. well, we saw that that guy, guy or gal do it chapell roan in the city. yes. that's right. it was really cool. yeah. now the challenge is to make movies. let's see how those knees are in a few years. i know, just thinking about it. thanks, scott. you bet. today is giving tuesday, and we're calling out one organization support who serve our country each and every

day. the navy, marine corps relief society was created more than a century ago to take care of family members left behind after a service member died in combat. but the president and ceo says it has now grown into a group working in all sorts of ways to care for families of those who are actively serving from home loans to mental health needs a lot of challenges. they face have to do with housing costs, gas inflation, life events that happen that they can't control, emergency leave, those kind of things. lockheed martin is doing it now for the third year in a row. so what they do is they do $1 million match. and this is not just for the navy and marine corps relief society. it's for for the military aid society. so we're talking about army emergency relief. we're talking about coast guard mutual assistance. we're talking about air force aid society. their collective theme, this year is mission give by visiting the site. mission gives us you can give back to help max out that million dollar

match from lockheed martin, the company based in maryland that helps develop space and satellite systems. also located in sunnyvale. it's go big or go home for one of the most spectacular neighborhood holiday light displays in the bay area. yeah, this is the widmer world 2024 light display opened over the weekend over on chelsea court in pleasanton. this is near fairlands drive. now each year it attracts children and adults of all ages. widmer family says that it really takes hundreds of hours to make all of this happen. the display includes moving parts like trains, a merry go round along with disney characters, and a nativity scene. now, this year, it's also hosting a scooby doo themed scavenger hunt. the whitmers say that if you want to beat all of the big crowds that they normally get every year, stop by during the first ten days of december and you can see it for free each night between 6 and 9 p.m. until the end of the month. wow. you know you got it all when you got baby jesus and scooby doo. are what christmases

are made of. zoinks! you're going through the manger. all right, heading out there should be nice for all the families. yeah, you just have to bundle up because it's going to be cool in the evenings. and at least it is dry. we are taking a look at our air quality, which was a major issue for us yesterday. and now we're starting to see things improving just a little bit. we are looking at some moderate air quality out there today. yesterday it was unhealthy for sensitive groups. so once again a slight improvement over yesterday's air quality. and we're going to see quite a bit of a bluer skies for today. now looking across the region we still have the high pressure that's giving us the clear conditions and steering. also, the storm track well to the north of us. we can see there are a lot of clouds and a lot of rain showers out there in the ocean, but this is not going to head our way for quite a while. so we are going to be dry. temperatures warming up above what's normal for the bay area
5:21 am
this time of year. los gatos headed for 71 degrees and downtown san jose in the upper 60s. we'll also see upper 60s for much of the east bay, with walnut creek reaching a high of 6768. in oakland, it will be in the mid to upper 60s for much of the peninsula. san mateo 66 and 65, in downtown san francisco for the north bay mid to upper 60s. so once again not a big range in those high temperatures. after last month's rain, all of the downpours that we had. now we're checking in on our reservoirs that are doing pretty well. most of them, on average, are at about 65% of capacity for the four largest reservoirs across northern california. a lot of other ones are at least at about half of the capacity. and now that we're in the month of december, we are getting into one of our more rainy months. but so far, looking down the line, we don't have any storm systems that will be coming in, at least not for possibly the next couple of weeks. as high pressure
5:22 am
dominates, keeps it clear, sunny and also warmer than normal. as we take a look at our highs and what to expect, it will be very nice and comfortable each day, but just a little chilly to start out each morning. and mike, you have a look at one bridge delay. yeah, one bridge delay. and it's not because of the volume of traffic. it's because the incident there, the disabled vehicle. i'm watching these speed sensors creep across from mid-span over to the san quentin side. i think they may have hooked up the disabled vehicle and now are slowly moving across. that's the reason why these sensors are slowing. we see some recovery as the farthest point to the east here. so that should mean they're moving over towardrd the san quentin exit and then clearing the span. we'll track that. we do have the bill. we expect at this time every day looking over highway 37. it's tuesday. we do see an earlier start for this highway 4 slowing as well. we'll track the build and the volume, but so far no major issues, including out of contra costa county looking good. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. it is 522. coming up next on today

decision is leaving many upset. we are breaking down the impact for families facing major upheaval next fall. plus, peninsula leaders move to oust an embattled sheriff. we're live this morning with a look at what's at stake in today's key vote. this is today in the bay. good tuesday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. let's get you started with a look at that forecast this morning. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can expect out there. it's been winter pleasant outside. yeah. you know, a new term. winter pleasant. i want to say pleasant because, you know, people are like, no, it's cold. no, but it's cold in the morning. the afternoons have been so nice. nice. yesterday. and we really don't get days this warm this time of year.
5:31 am
quite often. so we're looking at a trend that in gilroy goes from low 40s in the next hour to upper 60s and briefly making it into the low seconds for today. and so a lot of these numbers are well above normal, even close to a record high, with santaa rosa topping out at 68 degrees. that would be a new record for today's high temperatures. so even though we talk about it being cool, this is well above what we typically see even in early december. and mike, you're starting with those speeds, recovery coming out of richmond, out of richmond and over towards san rafael. see that san quentin exit that chp did? just update saying they've cleared that vehicle from the span. so those speeds should come back to green for westbound 580. you expect that? we also expect the slowing for highway 37 at the top and over on the right side of the highway for slowing coming in to pittsburgh being tuesday, we should see that slowing start where it does and then be more gradual with the build kicking in very shortly. actually, right now
5:32 am
coming into concord, you see all those sensors change there. we're looking at the bay bridge with the bigger volume. we should see a backup forming over the next ten minutes. there may be backup visible the next time we check with them. the rest of the bay showing a typical tuesday. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. some south bay families are now processing the reality of school closures now that their district made a final decision on which students will be impacted. today, in the bay's kris sanchez has alum rock union school district's big decision that will certainly have an impact beyond next school year. right, chris? yes. good morning to you, marcus and laura. so the future impact is really twofold. there are schools that will close at the end of the school year. and one more that will close after next school year. and then there's the fact that some families will be leaving the neighborhoods where they live to get their kids to school, going forward. let's get right to that list. the elementary schools are sylvia castle, donald meyer, horace cureton and a.j. dorsey, elementary schools, and joseph george middle school. and then at the end of this academic year, renaissance academy at
5:33 am
fisher will merge with renaissance academy and madison lieu elementary will merge with san antonio elementary and paynter elementary will merge with shepherd middle school. now, critics say that these closures will impact low income families who can least afford for their children to go to school farther from where they live, where they cannot walk necessarily. now, the school district has been firm in saying that it cannot afford to operate the same number of schools, with three fourths of the students that they had ten years ago. now, the new superintendent visited campuses on the closure list, but at least one parent told us she didn't feel hurt. it's heartbreaking because the district d not take the parent concerns into consideration. superintendent went to our school, spoke to our parents, spoke to him and he didn't put anything on his report back to the board members. i personally emailed each and every one of the board members got two responses back. now, there will be a number of changes in the 2627 school year with the merger
5:34 am
of two adelante academies into one, but at a different campus. aptitude and hubbard academies will be redesigned, and cesar chavez early learning will serve now just pre-k students only. that's year after next. now, the superintendent did say that the district will provide mental health and transportation resources for students who are changing schools. laura. big changes for those families. thank you. chris. well, just into our newsroom, three mountain climbers, including one from the bay area, are missing after never returning from a climb in new zealand. two of the missing hikers are american, including 50 year old carlos romero. he is listed as a certified guide from livermore by the american mountain guides association. also missing. a 56 year old man from colorado and an unidentified canadian hiker. the three arrived on saturday to climb aoraki, the nation's tallest peak and a popular destination for advanced climbers. they never arrived for
5:35 am
their flight home yesterday, and the search has been temporarily halted due to severe weather. later today, san mateo county leaders are expected to take another significant step in their push to oust an embattled sheriff. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live outside the government center in redwood city. what's expected to happen today, bob? well, good morning to laura marcus. when the san mateo county board of supervisors meets at the government building behind me here in redwood city, this will be later this morning, they will hold a second vote on their plan to oust their sheriff, who has lost the confidence of many leaders here on the peninsula in san mateo county. last month, the supervisors unanimously approved a special election to take place next year that, if voters were approved, would grant the board the power to remove san mateo county sheriff christina corpus. now, the board must give final approval for this special election. during a second public vote today. so again, they had one vote last month. second vote today. an
5:36 am
independent report released earlier this year says sheriff corpus, has fostered a culture of racism, homophobia, fear and retaliation in her department and may have had a romantic relationship with her former chief of staff, who has since been promoted to assistant sheriff. corpus denies all accusations. the san mateo county deputy sheriffs association has called for her to resign and last week the san carlos city council passed a vote of no confidence in asked her to step down. sheriff corpus has since launched a new community newsletter, and in it communicated that transparency and information sharing are essential pieces for building trust within the community. after last month's vote, here at the government center by the board of supervisors, the sheriff did issue a statement that read in part, quote read in part, quote. excuse me. the vote was wrongheaded and anti-democratic. it is a mean spirited political scheme. this charter amendment with sunset language that only applies to me, is an effort to go around
5:37 am
the voters to try to unseat me. i will fight it tooth and nail. i am not going anywhere. the supervisors do not control the sheriff's office, unquote. supervisors do not have the power to remove an elected official from office, which is why they've proposed this change in policy. they're asking voters to amend the county charter in the special election that would take place march 4th of next year. again, if they approve it. with that second vote today. and again, that is assuming that they approve that. reporting live here in redwood city. bob redell today in the bay. all right, bob, thank you. well, also today, san jose leaders expected to lay out a clear timeline on the special election to replace disgraced councilman omar torres. he resigned last month, hours before police arrested him on child molestation charges. the city council then voted to hold a special election in april. it's expected to cost at least $2 million. an interim representative will fill the role until then. at today's
5:38 am
meeting, they will finalize the interim appointment process and the special election timeline. 537 for you this morning, let's take a live look outside and cesar chavez. plaza de cesar chavez. this is christmas in the park in san jose. meteorologist kari hall has aook at what we can expect. weather wise. a lot of folks heading out there. taking a look around, and it should be nice for them. yes. it's going to be nice and cold. kind of giving you the winter feels as we are starting out with temperatures in the 40s. a live look outside in san rafael where definitely the heaters on inside the vehicles as people are heading to work. it is now 48 degrees there and we're seeing upper 30s, low 40s as you're heading out and getting this day started, here's a look at our high temperatures. it's going to be nice and comfortable. maybe some light long sleeves for today. but overall that sunshine makes it feel much better with oakland's high up to 68 degrees and martinez, it will be 66 later today, 67 in pleasanton, and about the same in antioch as
5:39 am
well as union city. and when we take a look at what we expect versus our normal high temperature for this date, it's usually right at about the upper 50s and low 60s. so this in many spots will be well above what we typically see for those highs during the afternoon. mike, you were hearing about a crash in fremont. yes. i'm taking a look. it was not far from this camera here. southbound 880. that's the direction around auto mall parkway. so it's actually just past where our view is right here. but you can see the steady flow of traffic, and it's about typical volume. we don't see any slowing. but at auto mall parkway is where the crash is supposed to be located. maybe off the roadway completely, completely off the roadway. from what i understand, a single vehicle involved there. so we'll get chp updates. n injuries reported. no slowing shows up just yet as you're heading down into the south bay in the south bay. your typical pattern here for northbound 101 does see that slowing right at 5.40 and more significant than yesterday of course, tuesday's having more traffic than monday. we're owing your typical expected
5:40 am
pattern through the south bay. keep in mind also there's going to be 680 over here at alum rock. the overnight roadwork there. no problem and no delays through the area. highway nine. over the course of the daytime we'll have that closure over near sanborn. and here overnight. this section of el camino will continue to have that ongoing work that will have parking restrictions between mountain view and palo alto. so keep that in mind if you are going to plan on parking anywhere in the area after 9 p.m. over here, we're looking at the recovery, complete recovery for that bridge out of richmond. we have slowing for highway 37, and behind me, highway four shows a good slow drive coming in, gradually building into concord out of pittsburgh and bay point. no issues for walnut creek, the interchange, or for the caldecott tunnel, the bill that the bay bridge toll plaza right on schedule for this tuesday. we're seeing now lines backing up approaching the toll plaza with the metering lights active. back to you. thank you. mike. well, honoring a warriors legend and his bay area impact coming up here on today in the bay. the new honor coming for steph and ayesha curry from one

544. we're taking a live look outside in dublin, where it is all clear. we haven't had any issues with fog and we will have a lot of sunshine throughout the day. our temperatures going from upper 30s in the next hour to mid 60s by noon. that's a nice recovery. we will get a look at all of our microclimates, and a look at the rest of the week's forecast coming up. and we're looking at the bay bridge right on schedule. we have all lanes showing them, filling in back to the end of the parking lot. that's what you'd expect. unexpected. there may be some additional slowing on the nimitz. there's a crash and maybe a door in the roadway. we'll talk about 880 coming up. so much. kari and mike. it is 544 right now. president biden is rushing more weapons to ukraine for its fight against russia. scott mcgrew here for us this morning. okay, so scott biden is worried that incoming president trump will hold up more aid. yeah. incoming president trump once got impeached for holding up aid to ukraine. t trump sayhe will bring peace to ukraine in the first 24 hours of his

presidency. so an end to the war no later than 49 days from now. it's certainly on our calendar. meantime, the biden administration shipping $725 million worth of weapons, including anti-personnel mines, something the white house had been reluctant to send until now. now, a reminder when we use figures like 725 million, that's money spent here on u.s. weapons manufacturers, not money sent to ukraine. meantime, incoming president trump postining on social media there will be, quote, hell to pay his words if the hostages held in gaza by hamas are not returned to their homes by the time he becomes president. now, he didn't specifically mention hamas, but i think hamas got the picture. he went on to say those responsible will be hit harder than anybody's been hit in the long, storied history of the united states of america, which implies the u.s. military would conduct those strikes with the exception of a few missile

interceptions, we have not been directly involved in that war, other than, of course, providing the weapons. trump's candidate, meantime for attorney general, made the rounds of the senate offices, including the chair of the senate judiciary committee, iowa's chuck grassley. i will do my best every day to work tirelessly for the american people, and i will make you, the president and our country, proud. you better. thanks, chairman. you bet. thank you. there's going to be easier than mr. gates. investigators. no questions, no questions. thank you. thanks. everyone out the door. trump's pick for defense secretary. also up on the hill making the rounds hoping for yes votes despite his own mother accused him of abusing women. penelope hegseth withdraw that accusation of pete hegseth shortly after making it, but his nomination is in trouble. here's republican senator tommy tuberville. he's going to do his due diligence. and again, we'll meet. i think we're having a meeting tonight with about 12 or 15 more senators as a group that

will meet with him. and but he's got to continue to do this. he's going to have to answer a lot of questions, not just to y'all, but to people that are going either either possibly give him a confirmation vote or not give him a confirmation vote. now, republican senator markwayne mullin, meantime, has dropped his opposition to promote this man. army general chris donahue, last american soldier to leave afghanistan. that moment captured in this picture, trump has said he will fire the general who led the withdrawal. and some reports say the trump team are pushing for courts martial of some. president biden of course, ordered that withdrawal. laura, in august of 2021. thank you very much, scott. well, happening today, steph and ayesha curry are being honored for their work off the court. the oakland city council is expected to adopt a resolution recognizing the couple and their eat, learn, play foundation. the foundation has renovated 17 playgrounds and raised $6 million for literacy programs. it has also provided

25 million meals for kids. well, turning now to today is giving tuesday experts say family homelessness is an invisible problem in san francisco compared to the more seen troubles of single adult homelessness. and today, we are putting the spotlight on an organization that's giving back in small and big ways to help break the cycle of homelessness in san francisco. today, in the bay's ginger conejero saab live for us in the city this morning and ginger experts there, they're saying that family homelessness is an increasingly invisible problem. there. that's right. marcus and laura, you may walk past a family experiencing homelessness and have no idea. and that's because the needs aren't as telling as those from single adult homelessness that we often see on the streets of san francisco. i sat down with the director of children of shelters, alexandria lewis, to learn more about the complexities surrounding family homelessness and how they try to fill in the gaps. homelessness has been a decades long issue in
5:50 am
san francisco. according to the city's point in time count this year, which gives a snapshot of the city's unhoused population on one given day, 2024 has seen a 7% increase compared to 2022. a more significant jump comes in the number of persons and families experiencing homelessness in 2022. there were just over 600 persons in over 200 families identified. that number has jumped to over 1100 persons in over 400 families this year. if one person loses a job or falls behind, it can really disrupt the entire family unit. alexandra lewis has been the director of children of shelters for almost seven years now. these children, they don't have a choice as to where they are, you know, at this stage in their lives. and so i believe that family homelessness deserves to have a lot more resources allocated to it, because this is really where we can really help break the cycle of homelessness. children of shelters works to directly provide or enhance often
5:51 am
overlooked needs of children in shelters. whether it's providing a wig for a child who has alopecia and is getting bullied at school, and this is really going to help boost their self-esteem and provide them that confidence, they need to show up on a day to day basis or if it's enrolling a child in summer camp programs. we really just are trying to make sure that we're meeting the family where they need. children of shelter is partnering up with schools in the city to give tutoring and support services, like speech and language therapy. they offer empowerment and nutrition programs. favorites are the birthday bunch and art and music enrichment classes that we really are just looking to, you know, give families the confidence they need and help these children in this time of their lives, feel human, feel quote unquote, normal as much as we as much as they can. and parents know well that there are so many little things that go along with children's development and ways to enrich their lives. children

of shelters really works directly to support those needs of children impacted by family homelessness. this year, they've helped about 1000 families are looking to help, even more. you can go on their website to find out, to find out how you can give back. that's children of shelters.org. guys, back to you. all right ginger thank you. time now to get a look at the forecast for this. now tuesday morning it's a chilly start out there. yeah it's giving today. giving tuesday the weather is giving us a cool start. and then a nice and mild afternoon. and the air quality is improving as well. so we are going to see it a little bit better today. not as hazy. and you won't have to really limit your time outside as we've had to do over the past couple of days due to all of the pollution. a little bit more of a breeze today and our high temperatures headed back to what we saw yesterday. mid to upper 60s for the north bay, upper 60s for the tri-valley and low 70s
5:53 am
for the south county. this afternoon, looking at tomorrow, it's about the same. not much of a change. this is what we'll see throughout the week. so the dry weather pattern continueues and rain chances stay mostly to our north, even into next week. we're still looking at some dry temperatures and slightly warmer than normal at least for the near term. as we take a look at livermore, we are going to be in the upper 60s through thursday and mid 60s for the weekend, but it does look like next week, even though we're not expecting much in the way of rain. is going to drop back closer to what's normal for this time of year. so what we are seeing right now is more like a little earlier fall in our fall temperatures with highs in the upper 60s, low 70s. but it is cool in the mornings with some low 40s for a lot of our inland valleys and spots like napa, as well as heading over toward concord and in san francisco, it's going to be in the low to mid 60s all throughout the week. not a single chance of rain here
5:54 am
through at least monday. mike, you've got another crash on the nimitz now. yeah i thought i had two, but we have one. it looks like over here. this is northbound. your commute direction past the coliseum toward the bay bridge, where the toll plaza is filled inor all lanes. we're looking at what looks like a activity over on the right shoulder. and some debris was reported a little farther north. just about the high street exit. there's high street. i saw a lot of clustering and slowing flashing lights. they may be clearing whatever debris is there, so we'll track that and we'll watch for any sort of traffic break. so far it looks like they're able to get past it. maybe just north of the bend. we'll track that again. it is an important time in the area. we see a little bit of slowing from all the earlier activity and the build coming in out of the tri-valley, so we'll watch for that. some reports of a fire along san leandro boulevard. it looks like we'll track that again. i'll let you know if there's any major structures involved or any alterations for traffic flow. so far, nothing reported in that area. and your typical bill here for westbound 80 coming down through pinole and richmond, you're slowing for highway 37 and highway four with
5:55 am
the build now 242 already showing a little brake tapping going on. so indicating a heavier volume than yesterday, we're looking at 24 with no problems all the way to the maze. and the toll plaza where the metering lights are active there. the other issue for 880 is the one we talked about last report, southbound. still a little slowing. there's a crash reported off of the roadway, a single vehicle involved as you head toward auto mall parkway. there may be activity and some damaged. so you might see the flashing lights as folks head down through fremont without any major problems for 880 or 680. and that first burst of traffic for north 101 easing up. the next one will kick in in about 45 minutes. back to you. thanks, mike. well, happening now it sounds like all systems go in foster city for what leaders are calling a new nonlethal goose management plan. last night, council members unanimously approving a new measure, officially walking back the previous plan that would have involved eliminating many of the geese. well, teams will instead focus on the non-lethal strategies like habitat changes as well as noisemakers. we

mentioned that yesterday. funding for the new plan is still up in the air. we are covering some breaking news just into our newsroom. south korean president declares martial law. we'll have more information on that. but closer to home in east bay market owner thought he found a way to stop burglaries after multiple break-ins, but they still found a way to get in and get away with stolen goods. just ahead at 6:00, we'll hear from him about the constant break-ins, the damage it's doing to his business, and morale. and a reminder we're helping to make sure everyone has food on the table this holiday season. our nourishing neighbors food drive is underway right now. it's easy to help out. the next time you're at your local safeway, you can donate $10 at checkout. and that money benefits bay area food banks serving hundreds of thousands of people. the money stays here. our nourishing neighbors food drive runs through christmas day. a lot more news ahead on this tuesday morning. you're watching today in the bay and don't forget that
