heading out. we're down to 40 degrees now in walnut creek. we may even drop another degree or two before sunrise in palo alto. 45 right now, as you're heading out and in redwood city, 46 degrees, where our temperatures stay in the 40s through 8:00 and then start to climb as we make it into the low 60s for the afternoon. we are looking at mostly mid to upper 60s today, and it's very much like the weather we had yesterday with low 70s in parts of the south bay and a lot of sunshine, and we are looking at better air quality as well. we'll talk about any changes in our weather in the forecast for the week coming up. mike still tracking activity by the coliseum. yeah. in fact we may actually have. there we go. we actually have an active traffic break. we had one vehicle over on the right shoulder, and we saw the flashing lights stop just north of there, just north of high street. two vehicles were in the center divide there, pushing one off to the shoulder. there. they got both of them crossed over from the center divide area. able easier to get some assistance and safer perhaps over on this side of the

freeway. after this, traffic brakes should release in just a couple of seconds. we'll give it a second. this is the backup as you're heading up toward the bay bridge past the coliseum. 580 is moving smoothly. no issues there. this will release in the next couple of seconds. we'll track that. there should be more slowing that shows up on the nimitz right there. that's the only unusual slowing. everything else is a pretty standard pattern for the east bay. good volume of traffic and the south bay. only this crash south 880 at auto mall parkway. we'll check on that. back to you. sounds good. thank you very much. we are covering this breaking news this morning out of south korea. we are learning that the president, yoon suk yeol, declared martial law in an unannounced late night address. he's accusing the country's opposition of controlling the parliament, sympathizing with north korea and paralyzing the government with anti-state activities. he declared the step as critical for defending the country's constitutional order. it was not immediately clear how the steps would affect the country's governance and democracy. we'll continue to follow this breaking news and

went missing, princess cruises has released a statement saying in part. cctv footage has also been extensively reviewed and the ship was searched thoroughly several times without success. having ruled out other possibilities. this is being treated as a man overboard incident. a report by the cruise lines international association, the largest in the industry, says in every case where the cause of a man overboard was established following a careful investigation, it was found to be the result of an intentional or reckless act. there were some incidents, however, which were impossible to determine. a motive. now also, according to kahleah, the cruise lines international association, there are about 20 reports per year of people falling overboard. it is the leading cause of death on these big ships. and while we don't know much about that, passenger princess cruises has released a statement also extending their condolences to the family of friends of that passenger who was traveling

alone in san francisco, ginger conejero saab today in the bay, all right, ginger. certainly a sad story right there. and scary. not to know exactly what happened there. all right. thank you. ginger. closing arguments continue later this morning in san francisco in the murder trial of nima momeni. he's accused of stabbing cash app co-founder bob lee to death in april of last year. prosecutors yesterday used a powerpoint with videos, texts and testimony to argue momentwe had the motive, carried out the stabbing and then tried to hide his involvement. the defense presents its side today, which prosecutors will then be allowed to review. the lee's family members say they're pleased with the job. prosecutors are doing, and hoping for a quick verdict. honestly, we have no idea how we're going to manage that time. it seems completely untenable for us, right? it seems like the most anxious i'll ever be in my life. stay with nbc bay area, both on air and online as we await the verdict. download our free nbc bay area news app to get updates on this case sent to

6:07 am
this year that store has been broken into. now the owner has spent thousands of dollars repairing and securing the building. there were different security measures, but says that nothing has been able to stop those thieves from coming back again and again. you really feel for these small business owners? it's tough out there. it is also cold out there for everyone as we take a live look outside, this time from dublin, we'll check the roadways with mike in just a little bit. kerry's got a look at our temperatures for this tuesday morning. and the temperatures that we're feeling this morning. will be what we'll see for the next several days. along with the highs. so really not changing here with a high expected to reach 70 in east san jose and 71 in los gatos. one of the warmer spots will be gilroy today, 73 degrees with mostly upper 60s for the east bay. walnut creek headed up to 67 degrees and 66. in martinez and for much of the peninsula, upper 60s there and mid 60s for san francisco into the north bay. we'll see a high of about 68 degrees today in santa rosa and

66 in napa. we'll be talking more about what to expect heading into the rest of the week, as well as the weekend, and i'll have more on that in just a few minutes. let's turn now to our climate in crisis, where extreme weather is making owning a home even more expensive. home repair companies say hot temperatures caused spikes in ac maintenance. frozen pipe damage also going up in bitter cold temperatures and flooding from big storms not only causes water damage, but you might also have to consider pest control when ants start moving into your home. experts say homeowners can fight back by focusing on regular maintenance to avoid costly emergency repairs. there is managing that tree trimming and keeping your roof protected, fixing caulk and managing weather stripping around all of your doors and your windows, and then wrapping pipes. and you may not be thinking of replacing your roof, but experts say they have a

continuing issue for the area of the northbound 880 past the coliseum. slowing but recovering now there's still activity on the scene. let me show you the camera. there at the bend. you see the flashing lights? now activity is over on the right shoulder, just past the exit and just before the exit. bottom of the screen, you see flashing lights there over on the right shoulder. so that is a slower zone by the distraction. and possibly one lane just north of high street. that's blocked. see that little slowing on the sensors there. and then southbound 880 coming into fremont right about auto mall parkway. there's continuing activity. car went off the roadway. no lanes blocked, but this is a slower drive. once you pass by dumbarton. clear. once you're passing by auto mall parkway. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. the raiders are long gone, and their practice facilities in the east bay still remain empty years later. coming up next, the contract that just fell through. giving way for bay area team to maybe strike a deal and athletic art. a man jogs his way into the art scene. let's go out to the futures this morning.

let's get a look at morgan hill. it is a cold start. we're down to 39 degrees. and throughout the day there will be a quick warm up. by 11:00. it's in the upper 50s and upper 60s. by 1:00 today it's going to be a nice afternoon, but just as fast as it warmed up, it's going to cool down. we'll get a look at what's ahead in our microclimate forecast coming up. and we continue to follow activity over here. at the top of the screen you see the flashing lights just clearing from the right shoulder. north 880 past high street. so the activity now just the disabled vehicle after a crash over on the right side near the exit. things should calm down here as the volume builds overall through the east bay. we'll show you the shift. well good morning. very happy tuesday to you. new records on the stock market this has happened dozens of times in 2020

always a fun time look. but before the celebration gets underway, we are getting a behind the scenes look at the team putting up the decorations. now the company american christmas is behind all the magic we normally see and they actually spend all year decorating and preparing for the holiday season. we actually got a look at the iconic eight foot angels that herald in christmas. tishman speyer owns them and is our client, and what we do for them every year is paint them, take care of them and make them look brand new every year over year. taller than me. so the company says it takes a crew of six to clean, paint and refresh the sculptures every year. that includes fixing 3000 lights. now, to make sure that you don't miss a second of this christmas in rockefeller with kelly clarkson right here on nbc. bay area is tomorrow night at 8:00. you know those angels are such a part of rockefeller center, too. so festive there. yeah. and if you've never been in new york

for city christmas, i mean, it's got to be on your bucket list. it is just. it's nice. it is. and some years, you really got to bundle up. yeah. and it's something we're not really used to. so it's like that level in the snow, right? yeah. so it almost feels like it could be new york city. this is like our high temperature. there. what we're complaining about this morning. so it is a cool start. and a look at another thing we've been watching our air quality because of all of the wood burning that we've had recently. our air quality has been suffering. and so at least today, it's starting to improve. we're not seeing as much of that particulate matter. it's going to be moderate throughout the day, but at least we don't have to really limit time outside. and our temperatures, even though we've been saying, oh my gosh, it's so cold this is actually well above normal. santa rosa. we're used to seeing highs on this date in the upper 50s. today we're headed for the upper 60s, and in concord we're at least six degrees above

average. and in san francisco will be in the mid 60s for totoday. oakland 68 degrees. our average high temperature for this date is only 59 degrees. and that's what we are seeing for today, tomorrow, the next several days still well above normal temperatures with the lack of any chances of rain. although we did get quite a bit of rainfall last month with that atmospheric river. actually even wiped out the abnormally dry conditions. and when we take a look at our four largest reservoirs across northern california, on average they're running at about 65.2% of capacity. and that's doing pretty well there. now that we're entering into our more rainy months, and we get about 60% of our normal rainfall from december to february, a lolot of that happening in december, usually, but we're not expecting any here. and it's a dry start to the month. it looks like even as we go through the middle of the month, we're still not looking at any rain here in the

bay area, but there will be a drop in temperatures. so san jose goes from seeing highs in the upper 60s and low 70s to mid 60s for the beginning of next week. not a significant cooldown, but that will bring us back to closer to what's normal for this time of year. mike, that commute through oakland, is it recovering now? yeah, it's weird to say, but it got better at 621. now, 880 is clear past the coliseum. the earlier incidents not causing any slowing. there's still activity on the shoulder. flashing lights only over here. a build for richmond, typical in through richmond and out of richmond towards the bridge as well. and in san francisco we do have a disabled vehicle at the harrison street exit off the bay bridge. so i'm tracking that. but overall nothing major for the bay. back to you. thanks so much, mike. well, next here on today in the bay, nbc bay area responds. a company recalls his appliance and promises a new one. guess what happened next? nothing. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura, nbc bay area responds next. but first, we're moving the bay area

vote and moving the bay area forward on this giving tuesday, we highlight one organization looking to get homeless youth off the streets. this is today in the bay. hello. tuesday morning. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. let's get a look at what's happening with that forecast for you today. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring those temps out there. beautiful. start there in san francisco, too. yeah, it's nice and clear. it is a little chilly out there as you're stepping out the door, but it will shape up to be a nice day. so we are looking at more of the same weather that we had yesterday. continue into this afternoon. take a look at san francisco where it is now 52 degrees. we'll stay in the 50s through 11:00 and then eventually make it into the mid 60s. but actually, what we're feeling today and what the highs that we've been seeing are very close to record highs. in fact, we may set a new record in santa rosa. the old record was 66 set in 2011, but other areas very
6:32 am
close and definitely well above normal heading into the end of the week. i'll talk about some cooler changes ahead coming up in a few minutes. laura marcus sounds good. we'll check back with you. we know some south bay families are now processing the reality of school closures, now that their district made that final decision on which students will be impacted. today, in the bay's kris sanchez has alum rock union school district's big decision that will have a certain impact beyond the next school year. kris. well, good morning to you, laura and marcus. so this future impact is twofold. there are the schools that will close at the end of the school year, and one more that will close after next year. but then there's also the fact that some families will be leaving the neighborhoods where they live in order to get their kids to school. that is a more long lasting impact. let's get right to that list. the elementary schools are sylvia castle, donald meyer, horace cureton, and a.j. dorsa. and then there's the middle school, joseph george. at the end of this academic year, renaissance academy at fisher will merge
6:33 am
with renaissance academy and matheson lieu elementary school will merge with san antonio elementary, and paynter elementary will merge with shepherd middle school. now, critics say these closures will impact low income families who can least afford for their children to go to school. further from where they live. but the district has been firm in saying that it cannot afford to operate the same number of schools. with three fourths of the students. it had ten years ago. the new superintendent visited campuses on the closure list, but at least one parent told us she did not feel heard. it's heartbreaking because the district did not take the parent concerns into consideration. superintendent sturla went to our school, spoke to our parents, spoke to him and he didn't put anything on his report. back to the board members. i personally emailed each and every one of the board members got two responses back. there will be a number of changes in the 2627 school year, with the merger of two adelante academies into one, but at a
6:34 am
different physical campus and aptitude and hubbard elementaries or other academies will be redesigned. and then the cesar chavez early learning center will only serve pre-k students. going forward, the superintendent did say that the district wil also provide mental health and transportation resources for students who are changing schools. but still, this is a very emotional time for families. laura. yeah, definitely. and they've had to wait so long to find out. tough times. thank you chris. well, later today, san mateo county leaders are expected to take another significant step in their push to oust the embattled sheriff. today in the bay's barbara dale joins us live outside the government center in redwood city this morning. so bob, tell us what's expected to happen today. well, later today, the san mateo county board of supervisors will meet at the county building here in redwood city. this is part of their planned meeting for a second vote to try to plan for an ouster of e san mateo county sheriff, christina corpus. you might recall last month that the
6:35 am
supervisors unanimously approved a special election to take place next year that, if voters approve, would grant the board powers to remove the sheriff. the board must give final approval for the special election during a second public vote today. so an independent report released earlier this year says sheriff corpus, has fostered a culture of racism, homophobia, fear and retaliation in her department and may have had a romantic relationship with her chief of staff, who has since been promoted to assistant sheriff. corpus denies all accusations. the san mateo county deputy sheriffs association has called for her to resign, and last week the san carlos city council here on the peninsula passed a vote of no confidence and asked her to step down. sheriff corpus has since launched a new community newsletter, and in it communicated that transparency and information sharing are essential pieces for building trust within the community. after last month's vote by the board of supervisors, the sheriff did issue a statement that read in part, quote, the
6:36 am
vote was wrongheaded and anti-democratic. it is a mean spirited political scheme. this charter amendment with sunset language that only applies to me, is an effort to go around the voters to try to unseat me. i will fight it tooth and nail. i am not going anywhere. the supervisors do not control the sheriff's office. supervisors do not right now have the power to remove an elected official from office, which is why they've proposed this change in policy. they're asking voters again to amend the county charter in a special election. that's again, if they approve this today, this would be a special election that would take place march 4th of next year, reporting live here in redwood city. bob redell today in the bay. interesting to see how this is all going to play out. thank you. bob. also today san jose leaders are expected to lay out a clear timeline on the special election to replace disgraced councilman omar torres. he resigned last month, hours before police arrested him on child molestation charges. the city
6:37 am
council then voted to hold a special election in april. it's expected to cost at least $2 million. an interim representative will fill that role. until then, at today's meeting, they will actually finalize the interim appointment process and the special election timeline. just into our newsroom, three mountain climbers, including one from the bay area, are missing after never returning from a climb in new zealand. two of the missing hikers are american, incding 50 year old carlos romero. he is listed as a certified guide from livermore by the american mountain guides association. also missing. a 56 year old man from colorado and an unidentified canadian hiker. the three arrived on saturday to climb aoraki, the nation's tallest peak in a popular destination for advanced climbers. they never arrived for their flight home yesterday, and the search has been temporarily halted due to severe weather. 637 this morning, taking a live look out at the golden gate bridge. wow. all right. this is

from our sutro camera there. all right. meteorologist kari hall is monitoring what we can expect weather wise. that was a different look this morning from the cameras from 1950. yeah, i had to make sure i was looking at the right thing. we need to tune that camera a little bit to add some back. i promise you, all of our cameras are not in black and white. this is a live look at san rafael as the sun comes up, looks beautiful today. and it's also all clear. but look at how chilly it is. it is now down to 37 there, and as we go throughout the morning, a quick warm up headed for the low 50s or 60s by the early afternoon and will be in the upper 60s for highs later today. oakland will reach a high of 68 degrees, also 68, in union city and in pleasanton, 67 degrees. pretty uniform temperatures all around the bay area from the coast to the inland valleys. and we'll see this pattern continue for the next few days. mike, you're checking back with that drive through fremont, right? the southbound side, your commute direction into the south

bay has seen some slowing right here by tesla just south of auto mall parkway. everything seems fine, but just north of auto mall parkway, we continue to see a slow drive approaching the crash, which is over on the shoulder. there's some injuries, possibly there, so there will be some activity at the off again, off to the right shoulder and into the fencing there. southbound, past the highway 84, the dumbarton bridge, and acactually srting back up in san leandro. typical slowing in the southbound build for the commute. same thing for 680 coming down through pleasanton. no surprises there. there is a build now across the san mateo bridge. again, no surprises for a tuesday. we see a heavier volume across the span with slightly lower speeds there. the south bay starts to build once again for the northbound directions. and of course the east bay continues with the build now in walnut creek. back to you. thanks, mike. we are monitoring breaking news in south korea and a late night address from the president. in the meantime, here at home. these children, they don't have a choice as to where they are. you know, at this stage in their lives, groups are working hard
