lake-effect snow on the way for areas still digging out from several feet of snow over the long holiday weekend. six million people are under winter alerts through friday. >> we will get to al's full forecast in just a moment. but first, nbc's erin mclaughlin is in erie, pennsylvania, tracking that snow and the problems it's causing. hey, erin. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. folks in this part of the country are used to a lot of snow. but they were even caught off guard by the shocking amount that fell seemingly overnight. now there are piles of snow across the region like this one. and there's more snow on the way. this morning, another round of heavy snow blanketing the great lakes region and beyond. as foot after foot of powder and dangerous ice roared quickly and unexpectedly. >> it started some time on friday morning and it hasn't really stopped. >> reporter: this latest blast of lake-effect snow creating

treacherous driving conditions. at least one person is in critical condition in michigan, after multiple crashes shut down a stretch of i-94. views from above show the extent of the damage and delays. semitrucks and cars stopped in their tracks. >> the snow being so deep and getting stuck, you're getting stuck everywhere you go. everybody getting stuck. so that's the worst part. >> reporter: here in pennsylvania, thousands of people have been stuck inside their homes, and this is the reason why. all of that snow fell in a matter of days. among them, lifelong local kimberly stoller who says she was surviving on thanksgiving leftovers. >> we're used to snow. having a lot of it to deal with, this is definitely a new experience for me. >> reporter: this is the first time you have ever been snowed in, and you are from this area. >> yes, ma'am. >> reporter: crews shoveling snow and clearing walkways to help those in need. including a navy veteran who relies on oxygen tanks to breathe. how many folks need help? >> you have hundreds. we don't know the magnitude.

there are a lot of folks that will quietly suffer. >> reporter: some communities grappling with more than five feet of snow and counting. in massachusetts, hundreds of cold, stunned sea turtles washd ashore. the sea creatures receiving life-saving care at the new england aquarium where they're gradually warmed up. because of colder temperatures in the northeast and the midwest, experts say to expect heating bills to go up 10% mpared to last year. and they're advising lower-income households to apply for state grants to help offset those bills. the department of energy says that folks should be setting their thermostats to 68 to 70 degrees during the day and low at night. hoda? >> all right. erin mclaughlin for us, thank you. >> that brings us to al. with a first look at the forecast, what do you see?

>> we're still looking at more lake-effect snow. basically there's no ice cover to cut off the flow of moisture as those winds come across the great lakes, they pick up that moisture. and then once they come back over the land, you can see it cools off and dropops snow. 6 million people right now we've got winter storm warnings in parts of michigan, winter weather advisories and lake-effect snow warnings for parts of ohio, pennsylvania and new york. now, more cold winds, more snow coming off lake erie, lake ontario. then there's a clipper system tomorrow that's going to move into the interior northeast and new england. it will bring rain and snow. and enhance the lake-effect snow that comes across the great lakes. thursday, snow and slick travel for a lot of new england. cold rain, right along the coast. look at the snowfall amounts. between watertown and syracuse, what we call that tug hill plateau, that will be anywhere between 12 and 18 inches of snow from cleveland to erie and south

of buffalo, upwards of another foot on top of what's fallen. guys? >> al, thank you. we move to washington now where more of president-elect trump's cabinet picks are making the rounds on capitol hill. gearing up for their confirmation hearings. nbc's garrett haake joins us now. what came of the meetings and what's the temp on the hill for getting these confirmations through? >> yeah. it really varies by the nominee. pam bondi, now up for the top job at the justice department, had several meetings with republicans yesterday. she seems likely to have a fairly easy path to confirmation. remember, she replaced matt gaetz who pulled out of the confirmation process a few weeks ago. her simple lack of any serious scandal probably helps her. that's not the case for pete hegseth. trump's selection for secretary of defense. he met with conservative senators yesterday who were singing his praises. but the steady drip of reports about personal issues around him related to alleged treatmenting or, alleged mistreatment of women, drinking at previous jobs, some of which he denied,

means he has a lot of tough questions to answer to lock down supporfrom republicans that he'll need. he will be back on the hill today for more of those meeting, savannah. >> another note, president-elect trump just announced his first trip abroad as president-elect. what do you know? >> that's right. mr. trump has rarely left south florida since the election. but this weekend he will be headed to paris to take in the opening of the notre dame cathedral that has undergone extensive repairs. the president-elect, attending at the invitation of france's president, emanuel macron. he will be one of dozens of world leaders there. it is his first big moment back on the world stage. savannah? >> garrett, thank you very much. now another major story from the nation's capitol. president biden's controversial pardon of his son hunter. this morning the fallout is intensifying and we're learning more about what was behind the president's decision. nbc senior white house correspondent gabe gutierrez has the very latest.

>> reporter: this morning, while president biden is on a three-day trip to africa, the firestorm over his full and unconditional pardon of his son is growing, even amongst some democrats. >> and as a member of congress, i'm pretty angry because it will be incredibly important that political leaders of both parties stand up for the independents of the department of justice. >> it is discouraging that he has now gone back on his word on that. >> reporter: for months, the president and his team had repeatedly insisted hunter biden would not be pardoned. >> i will not pardon him. >> we have been asked that question multiple times. our answer stands, which is know. no. >> reporter: nbc news learned he has discussed it with some of his closest aides, according to two people with direct knowledge of the discussions since june. they also said it was decided at the time that the president would publicly say he would not pardon his son, even though doing so remained on the table. the white house now denying that reporting, reiterating the decision was made this past weekend. >> if it was my son, i would pardon him, too. here is what i didn't like.

hunter biden's defense team released a lengthy document outlining why they believe the process had been politicized and mirrored some of what president biden used to justify his pardon. we asked the white house whether the president had seen the document or been briefed on it, we have not heard back, savannah. > all rig, thank you very much, gabe. we want to say good morning to craig. good morning. what you got? >> good morning to you as well. we're following breaking news overnight the middle east. israel and hezbollah trading new attacks, stoking concerns their fragile cease-fire could very well unravel. meanwhile, new demands for the release of american hostages taken in the october 7th attack. nbc's matt bradley is in beirut for us once again. matt, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. that peace here in lebanon is hanging on by a thread. israel's defense minister warned today if the nearly week-long truce is broken, israel will punish all of lebanon, not just hezbollah. and that comes as president-elect donald trump

threatened to take action on those hostages who still remain in the gaza strip. today fresh fighting threatening a fragile peace. israel launching its largest salvo of missiles and targets in leb mon since the u.s.-brokered cease-fire went into effect last week between israel and hezbollah. the strikes killing at least 11. according to lebanon's health ministry. israel calling it a response to hezbollah firing rockets into disputed territory between the two countries. but the biden administration insists the deal is holding despite the violence. >> we are not seeing the -- the -- just daily loss of life that we had seen for two months prior. >> reporter: but there is now an unpredictable new element in middle east diplomacy. president-elect trump weighing in on the hostages. held by hamas in the gaza strip. threatening on social media that by the time he takes office, ed there will be hell to pay in the middle east. adding that those responsible will be hit harder than anybody has been hit in the long and storied history of the united

[ bring them home ] >> reporter: trump didn't specify what he intends to do to free hostages held by more than a year. for american families of hostages in gaza, trump's rhetoric is a welcome change of tone. >> what does a comment like that, how does it land with you? >> i think he means what it says. it needs to happen as soon as possible. within the term of president biden. >> reporter: his son was last seen saturday in a hamas propaganda video in which he begged president-elect trump to negotiate a hostage deal. how do you get by day-to-day? >> just keep fighting for our son as we know he's strong. he asked us to be strong on this video, and we will be strong for him. >> reporter: and over the weekend, some more terrible news about another young israeli-american. the idf announced that omar nutra died on october 7th last year. until this news, his family and israel's military thought he was being held hostage in the gaza strip and that he was still alive.

stories, including an apparent man overboard. first discovered in san francisco. i'm ginger conejero saab in san francisco, where questions remain about a passenger who is believed to go overboard off a cruise ship that docked here in the city yesterday. the coast guard suspended its search yesterday evening off the coast of monterey. the identity of the passenger has not been released, but we know it involves a 72 year old man who boarded a ruby princess cruise ship last wednesday to ensenada, mexico. princess cruise lines has extended their condolences to family and friends of the guest, who was traveling alone. san jose leaders today expected to lay out the timeline for the special election to replace disgraced councilman omar torres. he resigned last month, hours before police arrested him on child molestation charges. the city council then voted to hold a special election in april. it's expected to cost at least $2 million. an interim representative will fill the role until then. at today's meeting, they will finalize the

the renewed attention will generate a break after more than 28 years. the brutal murder of a 6-year-old on her home in christmas night on 1996 shocking the nation and fuelling a frenzy of media coverage that would last for years. >> it was a case that people couldn't stop talking about. >> as a new netflix docuseries contends, problems with the investigation appeared early on. >> why was the ramsey house not sealed off as a crime scene until several hours after the kidnapping was reported? >> reporter: now striking a cord with a new generation on social media and a new push to pursue the case nearly 30 years later. in the late '90s, suspicion and unusual theories in the case. focussed on the ramseys. her parents, jon and patsy and brother. >> a bedwetting or toileting issue -- >> caused pat ramsey to get mad at her daughter? >> absolutely. >> reporter: pat ramsey passed away from cancer in 2006. no one has been charged in the case. two years later, the boulder attorney cleared the family according to dna

evidence. now 80, john ramsey telling savannahah, he is ver going to give up searching for the killer. >> you still have hope this can be solved? >> i believe it can be solved if the police accept help from outside this -- their system. >> reporter: boulder's current police chief says the department has been working for years with other law enforcement agencies and outside experts. including recent efforts by the colorado cold case review team. >> those files include more than 21,000 tips, over 1,000 interviews, which were conducted across 17 states and 2 foreign countries. >> reporter: this documentarian says he believes police could be doing more. >> certain items sent to the crime lab that were never tested should be tested. >> reporter: boulder p.d. writing the assertion there is viable evidence and leads we are not pursuing to include dna testing is completely false. the haunting case frustrating investigators in a family still seeking closure after nearly three decades. now, over the years, several

persons of interest have come up, including john mark car, who was arrested in 2006 after making what police say was a false confession. he and others were ruled out in part because their dna didn't match. but some who followed the case, guys from the start say the tainted crime scene makes it impossible to really rule anyone out. savannah? >> all right, liz. thank you. we want to turn to nbc news legal analyst danny cevallos. danny, good morning. these cases, they just never go away, especially like this one. it is unsolved. john ramsey out there still and i think the boulder police have acknowledged missteps. can you ever solve a crime in those circumstances? >> it is very difficult, especially three decades after a crime is committed. witnesses die. they move away. and, in fact, even the killer may no longer be alive after 30

years. jonbenet's father is 80. people have aged a lot after this and the killer may be gone forever, if he or she is ever identified. it would be virtually impossible to prosecute and actually from a defense perspective, as a defense attorney, i've defended decades old murder case, they're equally as difficult on the defense side. think of it, could any of us track down where we were and what we were doing 28 years ago on a particular day. these cases are difficult on both sides. >> but they keep talking about dna. they want to re-test the dna because there is new technology now. what do you think about going down that road? >> yes, there is massive advances in dna technology in just the last ten years. the old version, i would call it, of police dna evidence relied on a patchwork of police, law enforcement data bases. things changed with the advent of investigative genealogy. now they compare it to larger databases. about 3 million, two major data bases. and they can build. they don't need an exact hit.

they can build a family. they can find someone's distant cousin and triangulate from there using facebook and social media. tremendous advances. it is an expensive proposition. according to jonbenet's father, the offer has been there to help out from outside agencies or group to come in. and that offer, according to her father, has been refused. by police. >> danny, i know you've been following that case for a number of years now. based on what we know and perhaps what we don't know, what's the likelihood that this ever gets solved, that charges are ever filed? >> low likelihood, i would have said almost zero. but with the advent of this new investigative genealogy, you can -- if the dna itself was collected from a reliable source. context is everything. dna captured, for example, under a victim's fingernails has much more meaning than dna on a light switch or counter top because we know about the transfer of dna today. that cuts both ways.

dna can be a fantastic case clearer. but we know now that our dna by just touch transfer can move all around the country. on an airplane or bus, it's moving to another state you may never been to in your life. >> there are a host of potential suspects who were cleared if you watch this docuseries because of the dna in the case. but if the crime scene is problematic, testing is old, do they need to re-examine some of these other suspects, like a john mark car? >> i would say the only hope is dna evidence because from a defense perspective, if they have interviewed a thousand people, they have a million pages of documents in the police file, that's a whole lot of potential other suspects that a defense attorney can point to. although the defense wouldn't have any burden of their own, frequently, what we do is come up with an alternate theory, an empty chair defense. hey, the police got tunnel version on this person, but they ignored this person and you essentially build a case against that third party. after 28 years, there might be a lot of third parties to point the finger at.

freezing up in erie, pennsylvania, tracking the snow and the problems it's causing. hey, erin, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. all this snow caused treacherous conditions on the roads. yesterday on i-94 in michigan, there was a 17-vehicle pile-up, including three semi trucks, one driver critically injured, according to authorities. that pileup was caused by both bad weather and people driving too fast. they're urging folks out on the roads to slow down. meanwhile yesterday here in pennsylvania, according to county officials, thousands were trapped in their homes following that massive snow dump over the weekend. folks spent the day digging out. county officials performed wellness checks. and it is not just the snow, but we're also seeing colder temperatures both in the midwest and the northeast. experts are predicting heating bills to go up by 10% compared

with last year. and they're urging folks to set their thermostats to 68 to 70 degrees during the day and even lower at night and when they're not at home. hoda? >> erin mclaughlin for us, thank you. we will also get al's forecast coming up in a bit. a south carolina woman charged in the dui crash that killed a bride on her wedding day has now been sentenced to 25 years in prison. 27-year-old jamie pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and three counts of felony du-i. officials say she was driving 65 miles an hour when she smashed into a golf cart carrying the newlywed cple and two passengers near their rental house in folly beach. she apologized for what she called her thoughtless actions and said she had been hopelessly addicted to alcohol at the time of that crash. there are new developments this morning on a stow away who successfully managed to bypass security at new york's jfk airport and board a delta flight to paris. the woman had to be removed from

a return flight to the u.s. after causing a disturbance. nbc's stephanie gosk has more on the latest incident. steph, good morning. >> craig, good morning. we spoke with a passenger on board that flight who recorded the incident on his cell phone. he described the woman's behavior as erratic. telling us the disturbance lasted about 20 minutes but ho. delayed the flight for hours. >> reporter: this morning, new video of a passenger removed. the woman taken away before the plane left paris on route to jfk. >> united states broke my heart! >> reporter: nbc news learning there was a distaur bans from the same passenger who stowed away on a delta flight to paris last week. that passenger is in custody of french authorities, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. >> something triggered her to start being uncooperative. >> reporter: gary was on board the flight with his family,

saying the woman in the video who appeared to be russian and middle-aged was restrained by yellow bands on her wrists. >> the tension got worse and worse in the plane. she continued to get louder and louder. >> reporter: he says after about 20 minutes the woman finally started to calm down when four armed french police officers and an interpreter boarded the plane. >> she was then escorted off the plane. our flight was probably 2.5 to 3 hours late for takeoff. >> reporter: a spokesperson for france's border police says a stow away was initially denied entry to the country because she was not carrying a valid travel document or visa. and was placed in a holding zone to be returned to the u.s. tsa officials say the woman stowed away last week on a delta flight, completing a full security screening, bypassing two identity verification and boarding status stations. >> they may be here now. >> reporter: the tsa says she was not carrying any prohibited

items and did not pose a security threat. a source with knowledge of the investigation says the agency only recovered two water bottles in her bag. the source adding the tsa plans to meet her at the gate when she eventually returns on u.s. soil. the tsa releasing a statement overnight saying it opened a civil case against any passenger when there's evidence that tsa regulations may have been violated. still a lot of questions there. >> so many questions. >> how she was able to get past security, guys. >> steph, thank you. a connecticut overpass that was destroyed in a fiery crash in may reopened yesterday. the fairfield avenue bridge was badly damaged after a car sideswiped a fuel truck on the interstate 95 in norwalk, causing the fuel truck to explode into flames. that bridge was deemed structurally unsafe. so it had to be demolished, completely rebuilt. this is time lapse video that shows seven months of work that went into rebuilding it. more than 160 people worked around the rock to rebuild that

things have changed quite a bit. >> i want to start with the title. >> i just wanted to pick something truthful. i feel like your mom would love me. what is your mom's name? >> my mom's name is betty jo. she's a church going lady, so she might be -- >> i can convert her. potentially. my show is way more fun than heaven. >> let's talk about memoirs. if my math is right, you're about 30. >> most people don't write a mémoire when they're that young. >> yeah, most people aren't dumb enough to. >> what was the thinking? what was the impetus? >> first of all, i thought it was important to reflect on everything i've done to get where i am today because it's been a whirlwind in the last two years. sometimes it's hard enough to be present but sometimes it's easy to forget exactly how much work you put in to get where you're at right now. and i have lived what feels like four or five lifetimes to get to where i'm at now. it didn't feel right to wait until i'm 70 and have to summarize everything i'm doing right now, everything i've been through two chapters. >> your story, for folks that aren't familiar with it, it's pretty remarkable, the fact that you are sitting on the couch right now. your father dies by suicide when

you are one. your stepfather, not, you know, necessarily somebody that you looked up to all the time. >> this is a lot stronger to start my morning than coffee. i want you to know that. >> but then you have this grandfather that you write about in this book and you all but say you wouldn't be here if it weren't for him. >> absolutely. >> if folks aren't familiar were -- there he is. >> oh my god, the hair. >> tell us about your grandfather. >> he was the coolest. i spent every weekend with him growing up. every single friday he would pick me up from school and watch comedy movies, adam sandler to jim carey, robin williams. a lot instilled the sense of humor i have to this day. when i found out i wanted to do standup, he drove me to open mics. drive me to comedy clubs that nobody was going to be at so i could perform for five minutes. he would buy tickets so i could perform at these clubs. and he was just my biggest fan and best friend. and he passed away like right when all this started to happen.

so, he got to see all the work they put into it but, you know, i wish he was here to see the cool things that we get to do now. we get to do madison square garden two times next year. and that would be cool for him to get to see that. >> i'm sure grandpa steve will be seeing it. >> i hope he's not watching all the time. it's creepy when people say that. >> i mean, this tour -- you're going to start in dallas, if i'm not mistaken. >> yeah. >> you're selling out arenas. you had 80,000 people watching and laughing in ohio where you're from. >> yeah, yeah. >> that's pretty cool. >> the hometown showed up and showed out. now i get to go back and play nationwide arena in early august of next year, which is where i saw dane cook live. my mom won ticket tons radio when i was 14. that was the show that made me realize i for sure want to do standup. started the next year. now get to go back. perform the exact same arena, in a round just the way he did it. it's a full, cool full circle moment. >> yeah. and by the way, you're not satisfied.

no, no, no. author, standup comic and oh by the way, now you decided you want to be an actor as well. >> of course. i love acting, just as much if not more than standup. >> why? >> it's a different artistic expression. comedy is not all i want to do. i have a lot more to bring to the table than just my comedic skill set. >> in terms of acting mentors, is there someone you look to and you think, this person made the crossover from comedy to acting the way i would like to make the crossover. >> oh. well, a lot of comedians make great comedic crossover. again, jim carey and robin williams are two best possible example. when i look at acting, i don't want to lean just into my comedy roots. i think somebody like -- i'm in love with ryan reynolds, who isn't. >> lots of people are. >> everybody loves that guy. that's somebody whose career i would love to emulate, does everything, acting, horror, rom

com, comedy, brings his own unique charm. >> since you were here last, i did notice one visible change. you decided to go -- gone quite blonde. >> a quarter life crisis. 30 was coming up, i figure to fit the part. >> people treat you differently now that you've gone golden. >> my mom does for sure. she doesn't recognize me. this isn't who i raised. but she was a big fan of the reason i did it. i did it specifically for the tour poster for the tour that went on sale for 2025. i'm a huge classic rock fan. and very big billy idol fan. he had this iconic photo i wanted to recreate. and funny enough the tour was going to be called the rebel yell tour, just an awesome name and one of the greatest rock songs of all time. then right after we did the photo shoot for the poster, maybe two days, my manager calls and goes, hey, billy idol is doing a 40th anniversary rebel young tour next year. >> oh, okay, matt. >> you cnot use his title. >> thank you.
