ever. we begin with new twists in the case of a missing woman in los angeles that we have been following for nearly a month. >> her family said today the search is, quote, far from over after police said last night that she voluntarily disappeared into mexico. she was first reported missing november 12. that happened after she did not board a connecting flight from l.a. to new york city that she had booked. that same day, the lapd now says video from customs and border protection shows her crossing into mexico on foot. police say she appeared unharmed and there's no evidence of any foul play. detectives say based on her social media posts, she had a desire to disconnect. >> we have basically done everything we can do at this point. she's left the country and in another nation now. if she comes back into the u.s., law enforcement will be notified of that. >> marissa parra reports on what's next.

>> reporter: a story that continues to take twists and turns. lapd now talking about how they not only believe this is a voluntary missing person's case, but that they have no evidence of any criminal activity anywhere. to recap where things stand, how this has happened, we know that there were text messages send to hannah. her family tried to reach out. she wasn't responding. police ah's part to, quote, disconnect.combed throug her social mode edia. they found an indication she wanted to disconnect, to get away from it all. this missed connecting flight to new york at the center, , lapd saying she had her luggage rerouted to l.a. now we are hearing about new video evidence of her leaving the country. here is what we heard from lapd's chief. >> we reviewed surveillance from

u.s. toms and border protection which shows her crossing on foot into mexico. she was alone with her luggage. appeared unharmed. she has a right to her privacy. we respect her choices. we understand that the concern her loved ones feel for her. a simple message could reassure those who care about her. >> reporter: you can only imagine how horrific this is for her family members. i phrase it that way because we know tragically, her father committed suicide after she had gone missing. this was near lax airport. we have seen a lot of pushback back and forth between the family and lapd. lapd said they believe that she had intentionally missed her flight. the family pushed back on that. now we have this new statement from the family just released in light of lapd's new -- what they are saying was a voluntary and

intentional effort to disconnect. this is what they said. our family remains hopeful and we hope hannah is safe. stay focused on finding her. they are saying they are not giving up. we know this case will remain open until her safety is absolutely guaranteed. >> marissa parra, thanks. the romantic partner of the former top executive at abercrombie & fitch is out on bond. matt smith along with the former ceo and their employee face federal sex trafficking and interstate prostitution. the other two have also pleaded not guilty. >> steven romo joins us on set.

walk us through what happened in court today and remind us how we got to this point. >> a lot leading up to today when we got the arraignment of mr. smith, pleading not guilty to this. he was granted bond and is expected to go back to florida to a home that he shares with jeffries. his travel is restricted. he had to turn over his passport. he is a british citizen. the accusations leading up to now are -- they are eye popping. these young men accusing the three individuals here of extorting them and using force, fraud and coercion to get them to attend these sex events where they describe in some lurid detail in the indictment what they say went on there. prosecutors laying out that case for them saying that they used a casting couch situation on these men. the youngest was 19 years old. they say they will trade that

casting couch for a prison in federal custody. a lot going on there. a lot of attention on this case due in large part to the brand, which it's gone up and down in terms of popularity over the past several years. the executive team now distancing themselves from jeffries saying they were not aware of the accusations that took place between 2008 and 2015. >> can we talk more about the brand? it was so popular. why is this all garnering so much attention right now. >> growing up in the '90s, this brand was everywhere. it was pricey. the models were often accused -- the company accused of using the models' sex appeal to sell things. there was a documentary that came out in 2023 called "white hot," the rise and fall of abercrombie & fitch. it laid out the controversy behind the scenes but didn't

touch, it seems like, these 15 accusers who are now being looked at for these current charges. the brand everywhere is accused of using sex to sell these clothes, the products. now potentially accused of literally selling sex, prostitution, sex trafficking. >> thanks so much. in new york city, jury deliberations are underway in the trial of daniel penny. >> charged with manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide after he put a man in a deadly chokehold in a subway car. that was caught on camera. >> he was experiencing homelessness at the time. his death touched a nerve in new york city and across the country, sparking demonstrations, fuelling the debate over race relations and public safety. penny is white. penny said he didn't apply enough pressure to kill him. rehema ellis is outside the

courthouse in lower manhattan. walk us through what's happening in the court. >> reporter: let me tell you jury deliberations got under way a short while ago. we got a message that the jurors are asking a question they sent. the note says, we the jury request a reading the instructions, explanation of the law as it applies to the crime. it's a long explanation. the first part was mentioned today, that is the defendant does not have to prove he was justified. was not.e has to pro the question is, did he use ordinary physical force or deadly physical force leading to the death? that's what this case is all about. the prosecution has presented that it was the chokehold that caused his death as a result of what the medical examiner in new york said. we should point out that defense presented an expert medical witness that said the chokehold was not but

mateo county sheriff christina corpus. they also approved a motion to invite the sheriff to appear at a subcommittee to testify y on her balf. the board has been listening to public comment before the vote this morning. most of them were in support of the sheriff from the ones i was able to hear. the board has been calling for the sheriff's resignation after an independent report by retired judge ladoris cordell cordell, released earlier this year, found that sheriff corpus has allegedly fostered a culture of racism, homophobia, fear and retaliation in her department and may have had a romantic relationship with her chief of staff, who she has since promoted to assistant sheriff. her newly hired counsel this morning, a surprise for the board, showed up and spoke, asking the board to delay the vote and give the sheriff time to respond. i hear from supervisors their sense of urgency to get this done. urgency to you, the members of this board who are attorneys is not a reason to eliminate due process or the sheriff's

constitutional rights. you're looking at a one and a half page letter that the sheriff submitted to the board last night, in opposition to what she calls a, quote, despicable, despicable chapter for the county. she questions the independence of that report issued by retired judge ladoris cordell. she said she had no opportunity for her to review that before publication. the sheriff also wrote, quote, i was elected by a large margin of voters because the voters demanded change. this process undermines the will of the voters and gives four individuals the role of judge and jury. this is not democracy. here in redwood city. bob redell nbc, bay area news. a bay area man accused of domestic terrorism has made his first appearance in a uk court. he is now facing extradition back to the u.s. the fbi had him on its most wanted terrorist list in connection with pipe bomb attacks in 2003. those attacks targeted biotech companies in emeryville and pleasanton. he believed the companies were involved in animal testing.

after more than 20 years on the run, agents arrested him last week in wales. the judge in the case has set another court hearing for december 31st. city leaders in san jose are laying out a plan today to replace disgraced councilman omar torres. he resigned last month hours before police arrested him on child molestation charges. the city council then voted to hold a special election in april. an interim representative will fill his seat until then at the city council meeting. today, city leaders will finalize the interim appointment process and the special election timeline. that meeting will begin in about an hour from now. we've got clear skies and sunshine across the bay area today. here's meteorologist kari hall with the details. today, the sky will look a little bit me blue with better air quality as we go throughout the day. and it's also going to be very comfortable. but we do still have high pressure that's blocking any of the storm systems from moving our way. so the storm track continues to be well to the north of us into the next several days, as our high

bottom of the hour. here are some of the stories making headlines. >> no one was hurt but look at these pictures of a $4 million connecticut mansion burring to the ground on thanksgiving day. a turkey fryer caught fire inside the garage before spreading to the house. around 40 people were at the home when the fire started. firefighters say it took 16 hours to contain that blaze. no injuries but the house is uninhabitable. the nfl has suspended a linebacker from the houston texans for three games after his head to the head of trevor lawrence. it happened as lawrence was sliding to the ground and caused the quarterback to leave the game. the league condemned him for the hit as well as his conduct in the fight that broke out afterwards. he said he did not see lawrence sliding until it was too late. he will appeal that suspension.

an update to a story we brought you yesterday. a south carolina woman has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to that deadly dui that killed a bride and seriously injured a groom on their wedding day. the 27-year-old was charged with reckless homicide and three counts of felony dui. the family got a chance to speak out after her guilty plea. the bride's father did not mince words. >> for the rest of my life, i will hate you. you have ruined so many people's lives. >> she promised to spend the rest of her life helping people with suss stance use disorders and warning about drinking and driving. we are following breaking news out of south korea. there's been chaotic moves involving the government. protesters flooded the streets of seoul after the president declared martial law. then lawmakers voted to block the measure and the president

gave in and reversed the martial law order. let's bring in janis mackey frayer who has been watching this. a lot has happened in the past few hours. walk us through and maybe why some of this is happening. >> reporter: this has been an extra turn of events in south korea with president yoon agreeing to lift martial law forced by an emergency vote. in declaring martial law, yoon said he had no choice in order to safeguard constitutional order. it was basically a move against the government, citing what he called despicable pro-north korean anti-state forces. he has been in a bitter standoff and political gridlock with opposition members since he was elected in 2022. the main opposition party condemned the move as unconstitutional and immediately defied the president with this vote to revoke martial law. large crowds have gathered outside the national assembly

building in seoul. people were inside the building, windows have been smashed. popolice araround it. there's confusion about exactly where things stand, because under the order, political activities are banned, protests are prohibited. military officials have been told to pull back. the biden administration is in contact with the south korean government and is monitoring the situation. president biden is yet to comment on the declaration of martial law. south korea is an ally of the u.s. there are 30,000 american troops stationed in the country to guard against north korea. this is a political situation that's still shaky. it's unclear. people in south korea stunned by what's unfolding. >> i can imagine. >> reporter: the rocket man sharing a devastating update on his health condition. the five-time grammy winner addressing a theater full of fans who gathered to attend the

you covered it extensively. why did you want to make it into a documentary? >> i had a lot questions after this was over what the republican appointed judge who stopped the policy called one of the most shameful chapters in the history of the country. that's the judge that stopped it. a filmmaker reached out to me after reading the book. we talked. he wanted to make a movie. that was four years ago. we didn't know president trump would run for re-election or become the president-elect. now it's more relevant than ever. >> you talk about your experience going into these immigration detention facilities, seeing kids separated from their families. you did what journalism does at its best, you also took viewers there. many of them for the first time saw kids in what some described as cages. what was that like for you as a

journalist but also as a human? >> will never forget it. the images are seared into my memory. kids in cages supervisors in a watch tower. they were separated by the trump administration. it's not about what i feel or think. it's about what the 5,500 kids have gone through. the film is a look back but also a look forward at the incoming trump administration. it's a story of people who stood up and stopped the policy. not in a bipartisan way but universal across the country. >> talk about the incoming trump administration. one of the key trump administration officials that was behind family separation is coming back and leading the mass deportation effort that they are talking about. his plan has a lot of support. this administration was just elected by a majority. what do people at home not know about deportation? >> i remember reporting from the republican national convention talking to the two of you from the floor with signs, mass

deportation. there's a lot of support across the country for that policy proposal. what i believe in covering this is i think you have to think through, what does that mean? it's really family separation by another nail. it's not taking children from their parents at the border but it's taking -- there's 20 million people that live with an undocumented family member in the country today. in our schools and churches and our homes, frankly. i think people haven't really internalized what that might look like. you have the architects of the family separation policy ready to go back and do this again. i'm sure everybody is prepared for what that will look like. look back at the film and remember what happened in 2018. >> and briefly, what do you want viewers to take away? >> this is a hopeful story. there were career government officials that did everything they could to protect the health and well-being of the children. many are still inside the government. they took big, big risk to talk on this film. >> thank you.

spent time with family which was really stressful in some cases. i would argue that high sugar, emotional stress, people not prioritizing sleep. let's be fair. grandma or grandchild or niece or nephew is there, you want to spend time with them. >> you mentioned sugar. you talk about alcohol, restricting that, and caffeine. >> i'm like no fun for the holidays. here is what i tell people. these things you can have. look at them in moderation. give people a few quick instances. number one, many people don't know this but sugar affects your body's ability to produce mel melatonin. having desserts right before bed is probably not your best idea. eat dessert during the day. have them before the big meal. that might work better. alcohol really disrupts your eep. it's about ththe amount and how close to lights out that you have it. we talk about it in the book.
