"early today" starts right now. glad you're with me. i'm frances rivera. breaking overnight, more political chaos is sending shockwaves through south korean. after president yoon declared martial law only to walk it back hours later amid protests and opposition from parliament. and six opposition parties submitting articles of impeachment for yoon. good morning, claudio. >> reporter: good morning, frces, that's right. it all started late on tuesday evening when the president of south korean appeared on national television and declared martial law in order, he said, to protect the country from the communist forces of north korea. now this was the first time south declared martial law since the 1980s, and since then,

the country plunged into turmoil. thousands of protesters turned up in front of the national assembly and in other places in the capital of seoul to call for an end to martial law and to call for the resignation of the president. now, top aides of the president also tendered their resignation, including the president's chief of staff and the majority of the members of the national assembly gathered quickly to approve a resolution to call for the president to lift that order. soon after that, the president, in the middle of the night, appeared once again on national television to say he was lifting that order, but he was too late. the opposition has accused the president of trying to overthrow the free democracy and has called once again for his resignation and also submitted a motion, an impeachment motion which may be voted in parliament as early as friday, frances. >> south korean on the world stage now with this upheaval.

okay, claudio, thank you. there are more headaches now for president-elect trump as he tries to fill top government jobs. his pick to head the dea has withdrawn from consideration just three days after being named. chad chronister is the sheriff of hillsboro county, florida. he said over the past several days as the gravity of this very important responsibility set in, i've concluded that i must respectfully withdraw from consideration. for the latest, let's turn to brie jackson in d.c. hi, brie, good morning. do we know why chronister dropped out? >> reporter: in his tweet chronister said there was still work to be done in his current job. but after he was tapped to lead the dea, old controversies reemerged. as sheriff. chronister strictly enforced covid regulations, even arresting a tampa-area pastor for flouting lockdown orders in 2020. a spokesperson for the sheriff's office did not respond to questions on whether that criticism played a role in his decision.

a spokesperson for mr. trump's transition team did not respond to request for comment either. now meanwhile, trump's pick for defense secretary is in peril in the senate. sources tell nbc news that as many as six republican senators are not currently comfortable supporting pete hegseth' nomination, following allegations of drunkenness and mistreating women. he's denied wrongdoing. no republican has publicly come out against hegseth, but some trump allies are voicing their concerns. >> i think there are questions that some members have and we're going to be looking for an answer. >> reporter: are you among the members who have questions? >> i'm looking to be supportive. >> the articles i've read? yeah, some of them are concerning. i don't know if it's true or not, but he'll go through the process. he'll be asked about it. we'll see what happens. >> reporter: and, as hegseth's nomination is looking increasingly troubled, mr. trump is considering replacing him with florida governor ron

desantis, that's according to "the wall street journal" citing people familiar with the discussions. desantis was on an earlier list of potential defense secretaries. that other names being floated are former pentagon official eldridge colby and iowa senator joni ernst. nbc news has not independently confirmed the reporting and is seeking comment from desantis. >> so many fast-moving parts to consider. brie, thank you. ashley benefield, th ex- ex-ballerina convicted of killing her husband was sentenced to 20 years in prison and 10 years of probation. she shot her husband after an argument turned physical. we are learning new details about the stow away who was able to g through airport security in new york and board a flight to paris without a ticket.

stephanie gosk has the update. >> reporter: new details about the woman who allegedly snuck on board a delta flight to paris from new york's jfk airport over the holiday. a passenger shot this video that he says shows her being questioned when the flight landed. >> she ended up pulling out this pass and gave it to the flight attendant, and it was just not a boarding pass. >> reporter: french border police say she did not have valid travel documents and was detained. a source familiar with the matter says saturday night she was put on a return flight to jfk. gary was on that flight. he says she appeared to be russian and middle age. >> she was escorted off the plane. >> reporter: the woman managed to elude tsa and gate agents.
