francisco facing a major budget deficit, and it could get worse. the reason city leaders are now sounding the alarm before president trump takes office. we all kind of hugged our loved ones a little tighter this break. honoring their classmates after a thanksgiving week crash. how friends are remembering three young people killed in a tragedy. plus, a livermore climber is missing in new zealand. the new details being revealed about who he is as the search operation continues and remains in limbo. this is today in the bay. good morning. on this wednesday, i'm marcus washington and i'm kris sanchez.
6:01 am
laura is going to rest her voice just a little bit this morning. so you got me. hey, we are going to talk about traffic in just a minute, but first let's talk about that forecast. it's a little chilly this morning. yeah, it's chilly and this is what we'll see day after day. there's not a whole lot of change as we start out with some upper 30s in parts of the north bay and in the east bay, with the danville now checking in at 37 degrees, we are mostly seeing 40s elsewhere. as you're getting up and heading out on this wednesday morning, here's a look at walnut creek as you're getting started. it's in the low 40s. and then as we take a look at the trend, it does warm up quickly, but then we'll see our temperatures back to our upper 60s that we've seen over the past few days, 69 in san jose and 68 in palo alto and 68 in santa rosa. i'll let you know if there is any changes ahead. but, mike, you are already looking at the crowd at the bay bridge. yeah, no surprise, but it's good, pleasant. look here. the backup is what we'd expect, maybe a little bit lighter than your typical wednesday, but we're watching for another few
6:02 am
weeks before things really lighten up toward the last end of the year holidays. we're going toward a build here for richmond for west 80 highway 37 highway 4 showed earlier slowing than we had seen for a few days. there's westbound through pleasant i'm sorry out of pittsburgh and bay point and in toward concord, clear through pleasant hill and through walnut creek. no major issues south of there. a little slowing for 880 as you travel south from n leandro down in toward union city, but not anything dramatic. in the south bay, we had northbound 101 with early slowing that kind of back to normal now, and we're looking at vasco road, still under a half hour as you travel out of contra costa and in toward 580 alameda county drive out of the altamont pass right here. back to you. all right, mike, thank you. well, a dire financial forecast for san francisco as the city looks to turn the new page with city leadership. now, things could get worse for the city. with threats of a financial slowdown from president elect donald trump focusing on sanctuary cities today in the bay's ginger conejero saab live
6:03 am
for us in san francisco. ginger, the mayor elect. danielle laurie. they're certainly going to have some work cut out for them here. that's right. good morning marcus. we're about a little over a month away from the inauguration of mayor elect daniel lurie here in san francisco. but already he is looking at a financial forecast that will test his administration. the latest fiscal update released yesterday shows a dire outlook for the city's budget, punctuated with an $876 million deficit. lurie took to social media to reassure his voters that they voted for the right kind of change. we cannot simply cut our way out of this crisis, nor can we balance it on the backs of working families. what i commit to you today is to be clear and transparent with you in the coming weeks and months about the priorities that we need to undertake, and that starts with prioritizing essential services and making sure that we don't jeopardize our economic recover.
6:04 am
and you heard it there. lurie called the city's deficit a crisis. he also called it chronic and consistent. so this is how he plans to tackle it head on. he wants to grow and diversify san francisco's economy. he says he wants to prioritize investments that will lead to a full economic recovery, while also maintaining and prioritizing essential services here in the city. but it may not just be balancing the books here locally. lurie and san francisco may also be facing cuts from federal funding, and that is if president elect donald trump's threats of withholding federal funds turns into a reality. it's not the first time that these threats have happened. a little over a month before the new president takes office, his advisers are reportedly discussing how to unilaterally withhold federal resources from democratic run cities that refuse to participate in deportations of undocumented immigrants. now, as many of us know, san francisco
6:05 am
is a sanctuary city, and the city relies on federal funding for its transportation and housing budgets. san francisco's budget could grow, or budget deficit, i should say, could grow to $1 billion if the new administration withholds federal funding. now, still a bit on immigration, attorney general rob bonta will be in the city today to address safeguarding immigrants rights. he will have a news conference at 11 locally here in the city. he's not just going to talk about safeguarding rights here in san francisco, but also immigrants rights across the state. we'll be watching out for the latest on that and have that on nbc. bay area dot com. for now, we're live in san francisco, ginger conejero saab. today in the bay. all right. so we'll be following that. thank you ginger. later today we will get a better idea of when the city of oakland will get a new mayor. after voters recalled mayor sheng thao city council president nikki fortunato bass, along with other city officials, will share a proposed timeline for selecting
6:06 am
a new mayor. they also plan to go over a report from the city attorney. the report details when mayor thao will officially be removed from office, as well as how an interim mayor will be selected until a special election can b held. well, friends of three college students who died in a fiery cyber truck crash in piedmont are returning to school this week and sharing their heartache. the victims were all home for the holiday weekend. this is when the truck they were in crashed one week ago during the early morning hours. now, a fourth victim was pulled from that truck in time and survived. the three people who died, sean dixon, jack nielsen and krista tsukahara. they are all recent graduates of piedmont high school. dixon was a student athlete at usc and a member of lambda chi alpha fraternity. late monday, his friends gathered on greek road to remember him. finding groups to go off campus and go to the beach and go surfing or go rock climbing. he was always trying to find other people who liked

in the park there plaza cesar chavez. that's pretty. it looks a little peacock. oh, it's tail feathers. hey, shake a tail feather. how about it? this morning, kari hall has a look at what we can expect for those temperatures out there. maybe it's shivering in the cold. that's possible. yeah, it is a cold start. it's also been very dry and we continue to see dry conditions all across the west. and the storm systems still being held off the coast as we deal with high pressure. so let's check in on our water year where we are seeing quite a bit of a range here from santa rosa, where we are ten inches above what's normal after that big atmospheric river we had last month. we are nearly 16in of rainfall so far for the water year that dates back to october first. we're also seeing a significant range from where we are at a surplus and also at a deficit. when we take a look at the spread here, santa rosa has had 364% of its normal amount of
6:09 am
rainfall for date to date, while in oakland we are only at half of our normal amount. so y you n see how big that spread is across the bay area. and we're also seeing above normal temperatures again today. usually we're in the upper 50s and low 60s for those highs. mike, how are the high gas prices? are they a little bit lower a little bit few cents lower each of every few nights here. in fact overnight we have a dynamic duo in livermore. we mentioned them yesterday. they're still to number two and three in the state. there, but now a little bit lower priced 319 at both of those marathon stations. the one on home street and the one on south livermore avenue, again, in the city of livermore, now in marin county, the north bay best price is in mill valley. 363 at hq fuels on shoreline highway and the last number we list is in the south bay. the low there is 369 in sunnyvale. that's for all of santa clara county national petroleum on old san francisco road. check gasbuddy.com to find out if prices have changed in

at what to expect today in gilroy with a lot of sunshine. our temperatures go from low 40s to upper 60s and briefly into the low 70s today. it's going to be another nice one, especially for this time of year. we'll talk about what's ahead coming up in a few minutes. and right now we're looking at the bay bridge with the backup reports of a crash somewhere near the toll plaza. approaching the area. i don' see any real difference in the flow. we'll track this, though. then there is a delay, potentially, for you coming out of south county. as well. well, good morning. very happy wednesday to you. the s&p 500 will open at new records again today. there's a fed governor talking on cnbc right now. and he says that the inflation seems to be under control. so i think you're going to see the markets really move higher at the open coming up in about 15 minutes. head of campbell's soup is stepping down to take a new job running the washington commanders football team as team president. interesting move amazon startling the computer world,

6:16 am
airlines discovered they can charge for it. remember spirit airlines, the low cost of low cost is bankrupt. southwest airlines getting rid of the cattle call style of boarding passengers in favor of assigning seats. yes, you'll be able to pay for better seats. you've heard about that. this is all airlines saying add on pricing is critical to survival, and a group of airline executives will testify this morning in front of a senate committee about seat fees, charging more to sit up front or in exit rows, that kind of thing. one senator comparing passengers to piggy banks to be shaken for every last dime. i think you can well, but you can also look at it as a glass half full sort of thing, right? there are flights if you're just going to l.a. or whatever. there's a united basic flight that you can't even bring a bag. but you know, the seat which is back in the back in the back costs practically nothing. that is true. but for those of us who are traveling with families, we get hosed. yeah, for sure, because you got to sit everybody together and it's like, of
6:17 am

to a wrap, spotify wrapped is now out with its list of artists and creators who shaped 2020. so grab your friendship bracelets and top of the goal. artists took over a year and some say this is her era. and for a fortnight there we were forever running to. you sometimes ask about the weather. now you're in my backyard. look, i don't think this is a surprise here. this year's global top artist, taylor swift. this is the second year in a row that taylor has actually taken that top spot, with more than 26 billion global streams. yeah, the weekend is number two, which surprises me, though the weekend number two, and then bad bunny, followed by drake and number five is billie eilish. and you can see your wrap list of spotify right here. this is what yours will look like, showing the top artists and top songs. spotify says that the top song globally is espresso by sabrina carpenter. i
6:20 am
love that song and the most viral song of 2024 is die with a smile. this is by lady gaga and bruno mars. okay, we went dark at the end of this year. well, apple music also has released its 2024 replay for its users. kendrick lamar topped the singles chart with not like us and you know who made the top of the replay list for me anyway? beyonce. i said it right. beyonce. it's beyonce. oh, so you know, my daughter's probably saying they not like us because we share a playlist. we use amazon music. and so it's like i just looked at our list and it's like the rolling stones for dad, latin pop for me. and then she's got, you know, the alternative music that your daughter likes to declan mckenna and conan gray. so poor thing. she doesn't get her cute little raps like her mom's too cheap for spotify. her friends are like, let me see yours. she's like, nah, that's okay. can you get in there and mess it up? a lot of michael bolton on there, friends looking
6:21 am
like, what are you doing? we're supposed to live without you. yeah, quite the playlist. kari who's who did you listen to? i don't even listen to with spotify. so you're a book. you're an audiobook person. i listen to audiobooks and if i do listen to music, it's pandora. so i think they get feel me? you know, my little mix a little bit better. i like christian music and christian hip hop, so. all right. and then me, when we're over in the traffic. yeah. interesting. okay. give us the soundtrack. all right. let's get started with a look at what you may see as you're driving and listening to your top ten songs on your way to work this morning. it's been our air quality that's been in the top ten list for what we're talking about in the weather department. we are seeing the hazy start this morning. we have seen things improving over the past few days, and we are going to see better air quality, but still may look a little hazy out
6:22 am
there. what happens when we have high pressure? the kind of weather setup that we get during these dry days? during our winter months, we see the pollution get trapped below that high pressure and that causes the air to sink down just quite a bit into the valley. so there's also not much enough of a wind to help clear things out. and high pressure is also steering away any storm systems and keeping them out in the pacific. that's going to be driven further to the north with the clouds that we are seeing. so here we go with another sunny day and well above normal highs with temperatures topping out at 67 degrees in santa rosa and 68 in novato and tiburon. today, 63 degrees and upper 60s for yountville, while benicia will see a high of 65. looking at the next several days, more of the same temperatures we've been seeing and also still very dry. once again, the storm track going into the pacific northwest and avoiding the bay area for quite a while. but we are going to see some slight changes in
6:23 am
our temperatures for spots like palo alto, we go from seeing mid to upper 60s to low 60s next week, expected to be cooler, but still no rain in the 7-day forecast. and our mornings will get even colder as well. mike, you're seeing a delay if you're heading into san francisco san jose. that's right. it's through san jose. we're showing a pretty standard build. and in fact, i think these sensors just cleared. they should reset back to just below the speed limit for 87. and a good stretch of 101. so it's a little more spread out. but overall the travel time is about the same for that portion through san jose into san jose, there's a delay because of a crash right around cochrane. northbound 101 has been tied up out of south county, but it is getting through. back to you. thanks, mike. well, next here on today in the bay nbc bay area responds some criminals soul scam is draining gift cards. so you've got to protect that plastic. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. we'll show you how next
6:26 am
protecting a gift card starts at the rack in the store, because that's where many criminals start. before you buy a card, look for tampering. some scammers mess with the barcode. you can feel the sticker. it has a little bit of a ridge on it. former police officer michelle loss spotted a tampered card and made a viral video on tiktok. here's the scam. that barcode sticker is for a different gift card that the thief has. so any money you load onto that card
6:27 am
would actually land on the thief's card. so look for a sticker. take that extra 20s and just kind of feel it, look at it, visually inspect it. you can choose a gift card with extra security. some of them let you set up a pin, especially those used anywhere kind. that might make it tougher for the bad guys to drain your balance. after you get a gift card, use it asap because other criminals are simply hacking to try to drain your balance. there are groups out there that this is all they do, so use your gift card as soon as possible. here's another idea try to cash out your gift card in california. if your gift card has less than $10 on it. state law says the store has to give you cash or a check for the balance. if you have more than $10 on a card, you know you're not going to use, consider selling it on a third party exchan. they might not give you face value for it, but it's more than zero, which is exactly what the thieves will leave you. we h have a lot more ahead for

feel it before you even take the covers off. makes it hard to get up and out the door. but this will wake you up. this is better than coffee in some spots. we're in the upper 30s right now in santa rosa, and in sonoma. it's also 37 in danville, but it's 47 in san jose,e, and we' seeing temperatures start at 50 in san francisco. while in palo alto, it's nice and sunny in the mid 40s. and our trend takes it back to what we saw yesterday going from a cold start to a mild afternoon with even some low 70s for parts of the south county and martinez. today look for a high of 66 and also 66. in fairfield. we'll talk about what's ahead coming up in a few minutes. kris. thank you. kari. happening today, oakland leaders take the first real steps in turning the page as they try to lay out the steps to replace recalled mayor sheng thao. today in the bay's bob redell is live this morning and bob the city they're going to put some information out for voters later today, correct? they are going

to have a meeting at 10 a.m. at oakland city hall, where the city council president, nikki fortunato bass, along with other city leaders, will hold this meeting. it's a media briefing to outline the timeline for selecting someone to replace current mayor. sheng thao, who is recalled from office during the election. this past november by over 60% of voters. now, city leaders also plan to go over a report from the city attorney that details when mayor chow would be officially removed from office, as well as how an interim mayor would be selected. that's until a special election is held, which would most likely take place next april 15th. according to reporting by the mercury news. so they need someone to fill the shoes of the mayor until that special election in the spring. so who could replace mayor chow on that interim basis? normally it would be the council president, but council president nikki fortunato bass starts her new job as alameda county supervisor in january so she can do it. the next in line would be president pro tem dan colle, but he can't do it because he's retiring in
6:34 am
january. so the mercury news also lists possible interim replacements for mayor chow. council member carol fife. council member ignacio de la fuente. lobbyist isaac reed. former council member lauren taylor or representative barbara lee. reporting live. bob redell today in the bay. all right. thank you, bob. so the stage is also now set for an election day showdown to determine the future leadership in the san mateo county sheriff's office. as expected in a vote yesterday, the second vote supervisor signed off on a plan to bring a spring ballot measure to voters. it would give the board authority to remove sheriff christina corpus. she has been at the center of controversy after an independent report accused her of fostering a culture of fear and retaliation, and suggested that she had an inappropriate relationship with a top assistant. she denies all of these accusations, calling them politically motivated, and has refused to resign. well, developing right now, gender

affirming care for transgender minors will take center stage today in the u.s. supreme court. want to give you a live look this morning at the courthouse in washington, dc? that's where demonstrators are already gathering this morning. the justices will hear a challenge to a recent tennessee law banning the use of puberty blockers and hormone therapy. the court will not consider that issue of gender affirming surgery because it was not part of the lower court decision, but anything the supreme court decides may also have an impact. in 23 other states with similar laws. three trans families and the aclu filed suit, arguing that the law discriminates on the basis of sex. now, the justice department echoed that complaint, adding that the law violates the 14th amendment's equal protection clause. as of april, there are about 114,000 trans youth living in states where their care is restricted, according to ucla law school of law. that is, that includes tennessee, kentucky, alabama and
6:36 am
florida. and while this case is about trans care for youth, some fear down the road. it may also impact what's available for adults. the supreme court will likely issue a ruling next summer. well, jury deliberations begin in san francisco today. this will decide the fate of nima momeni. he's accused of murdering tech ceo bob lee in the stabbing last april. yesterday, the defense wrapped up its closing arguments, calling the death in the case self-defense. they claim that lee was high on drugs and was the one who actually attacked mini, who then stabbed lee to death to protect himself. we're going to bring you the verdict on air as well as online whenever it comes down. members of a british rock band are rattled after they were held at gunpoint. here in the bay area. get down! lauren, get down! bring the police! ring the police! guys! somebody ring the police! members of the rock band sports team just arrived monday from england. when they stopped at a vallejo starbucks. that's
6:37 am
when thieves broke into their sprinter van. and when two band members went out to stop the thieves, the thieves drew their weapons. they got away with laptops and clothing, and nintendo switctches, but fortunately not their instruments, which were locked away. band members say things got worse when vallejo police told them to file a police report online, and it just felt like it was really normalized for the whole community there. the people in starbucks, the police who we spoke to, i think that's kind of what is almost more shocking and shaken us more than the incident. we reached out to the vallejo police department. we hav't heard back from them yet, but band members say that this experience actually feels like it connects them better to the bay area. they also hope that things that come across at their show saturday night at the chapel in san francisco, and that everything works out just fine. let's get a look at that forecast for you right now. 637 meteorologist kari hall has been tracking those temps there. beautiful there. it's funny that it is warmer in san francisco right now than it is in san
6:38 am
jose. well, i mean, that's the water that kind of keeps those temperatures a lot more even than we see the big fluctuations with the inland valleys. so we are starting out clear and we'll be in the low 50s, but we also don't see it warming up as much as we'll see in the valleys with highs there in the mid 60s and then low 70s for the south county, with gilroy, san martin and morgan hill all reaching into the low 70s with upper 60s elsewhere in napa. look for a high of 68 degrees. looking at tomorrow, there is not much of a change and we see those numbers coming up or down a degree or two. but overall we're looking at a very steady weather pattern with a lot of sunshine that continues as we go throughout the week. we'll take a look far ahead coming up in a few minutes. but mike, you're starting with what is a pretty predictable east bay commute. yeah, we know the patterns in the bay are. i've been watching them for almost 20 years. so we're looking over here at the backup we expect. and as we approach the end of the month, we'll get lighter traffic for
6:39 am
the morning commute. but this morning we should see really focused traffic between 7 and 9. yesterday really kicked in strongly right here. we are seeing that early slowing we saw for 680 come down through walnut creek just on the verge of the speed limit but a little bit low there for 680 24. no problem. through the caldecott tunnel we see slowing here for 680 south through pleasanton. and that build. there may be a second crash of the morning around a street. southbound 880 shows a tad bit of slowing there. and your typical build down in toward union city, the south bay does show northbound 101 with your slowing, but let's get a closer look as we're looking at the el camino stretch right her. watch for the overnight closures in certain spots for the continued work between mountain view and palo alto. so watch for those parking restrictions after nine. scott. well, mike, coming up next, former obama adviser valerie jarrett will join me. plus, it looks like headsets. headsets, nominations in big trouble. out to the big board. this morning where i do expect. and there it is. lots of green. a fed governor talking right now about how inflation is under control. wall street likes that

like donald trump is comparing his legal problems to hunter biden and scott. trump wants his felony convictions thrown out, right? these are the felony convictions from new york city. the fraud case. trump says he was targeted not because he committed fraud, though he did. he says he was targeted for who he is. in that sense, his lawyers say he's like hunter biden. the younger biden and his father think he was targeted not for crimes, but for who he is. evidence of that, the crimes. hunter biden are accused of are almost always settled, not taken to trial, almost never result in jail time. except this case. wall street journal the first to report pete hegseth nomination for defense secretary is in trouble. trump may replace him with florida governor ron desantis. over the weekend, the new york times turned up an email from hegseth own mother saying she was concerned about his treatment of women. the new yorker says it talked with former coworkers who said hegseth was intoxicated at work. nbc news has confirmed by
6:44 am
talking to ten staffers and former staffers at fox news that hegseth coworkers there were worried about his drinking. a trump transition spokesman calls the claim completely unfounded, and false. if trump does change candidates for defense secretary, that might be good news for women in the armed forces. hegseth has said in the past, he wants to end the practice of women fighting alongside men. i'm straight up just saying we should not have women in combat roles. it hasn't made us more effecective, hasn't made us more lethal, has made fighting more complicated. former president barack obama will speak about bridging the political divide tomorrow at the democracy forum in chicago. he says he plans to speak about pluralism, two or more sides living and working together in harmony, or at least not in a state of violence. valerie jarrett is chief executive officer of the obama foundation. i'm sure that's a familiar name. she served as senior adviser to
6:45 am
president obama for eight years, making her the longest adviser to a president ever. valerie, one of the ways i think we can summarize this is, is how to disagree without being disagreeable. but tell me that's possible. it just doesn't feel possible at this point. well, good morning, scott. and yes, it is absolutely possible. and part of what we're going to show tomorrow is concrete examples of how it's getting done. we know that the american people really have a hunger to come together and we want to give them the tools to disagree without being disagreeable, to do it respectfully, to learn to listen to one another. and none of this is easy, particularly in this polarized climate, that we're all living in. but we want to give them concrete examples and tools of how to do it. we have leaders, for example, that are working on college campuses, bringing people together who have differences of opinions and giving the students the tools that they need to communicate more effectively. we have a terrific leader from selma bridging the bridging the racial gap. we have global leaders who've been a part of our programs, who are out there
6:46 am
every single day practicing pluralism. and so one of the let me push back a little bit on this isn't one of the lessons of the election, though. if one side is fighting in a certain way, you got t to kind of matcht almost the opposite of what first lady michelle obama used to preach. case in point, president biden said he would never pardon his son because that was the wrong thing to do and then ended up discovering, i think, in his opinion, that the other side would never stop pursuing his son unless he responded. and so he changed his mind. well, part of why i enjoy being the ceo of the obama foundation is that i'm not focusing on the politics of today. i'm helping young leaders develop the skills they need to move us in a positive direction tomorrow. and i think it can be done and i know it can be done because i've seen young leaders do it and so we want to make those tools available to everybody. those of you who aren't here in chicago can tune in to obama. org and listen for the day president obama will be
6:47 am
speaking at 5:00 central time and throughout the day, beginning at noon central. we will have these leaders who give you those tools. and so you've got some videos on youtube as well, miss jarrett, that are president obama talking with people like samuel l jackson and others as well, which will attract a lot of attention. make it fun and it's going to be hard. and so i don't want to sugarcoat this look and whether it's your cranky uncle at a holiday dinner or it's your colleagues at work or elected officials, all of us need to figure out ways to listen to one another and to realize that we actually have more in common than we have. differences. and that's the hunger that i hear out there. and so fighting back against this kind of toxic climate and the polarization we're doing, and not just for today, scott, but for the long term. that sounds great. valerie jarrett, i appreciate you getting up early. at least our time and joining us kris love this. they're focused on the

young people and the next generation as well. thank you very much. well, tonight, the tree at 30 rock in new york city will be lit as part of the beloved annual tradition spanning nine decades, nine decades. unbelievable. the today show's sannah guthrie, hoda kotb, al roker and craig melvin will all help light the tree. but first, we get to catch quite the show. yeah, so here is a live look for you right now at rockefeller center, and you can see the tree right there this morning. emmy and grammy award winner kelly clarkson will host the two hour show, which will feature radio city rockettes. there's also quite the musical lineup as well, including broadway star megan hilty, who is who was, i should say, glinda. glinda the good witch for two decades before ariana grande. and she's also back on broadway in the musical death becomes her. when we actually spoke to her about playing tonight, she couldn't tell us exactly which holiday favorites she would be singing. but, you know, maybe it will be christmas in san francisco or christmas by the bay from a very early age, i

loved san francisco, and now playing the nico is one of my absolute favorite cabaret spots. the audiences are amazing and the space is so intimate and welcoming. so i'm i'm really looking forward to coming back whenever, whenever i'm done with my run in new york, the radio city rockettes, as we said, starring role there as well. so look, you can watch all of that christmas in rockefeller center special. it is live tonight. it's going to start at 8:00 right here on nbc bay area. and christmas is just talking about it is just wow, 20 days away. but here on today in the bay we will be celebrating christmas early christmas with the k that is. i'm kicking off my dorky little 12 days of christmas tomorrow and instead of thrifty gifts, which we did last year, i'm going with snack miss. oh, i have 12 little dishes that are pretty easy to put together. budget friendly friend and family favorites. these will hopefully help you get through

your holiday potluck and party season. and they're nice on those nights that we just are too busy to cook along the way, i'm going to point you to the charities that deliver food all year long, way beyond snacks, and i'll remind you that our nourishing neighbors campaign continues at our local safeway stores around the bay area. it is the fastest and easiest way to take $10 and turn it into 20 meals without having to meal prep. that is the best part. i'm posting day one of christmas snack edition tomorrow. it is my kids favorite thing that i make when we have parties and get togethers. you can find it on instagram and on facebook, and i'll have it ready to go for you. i'm excited to see and try a lot of those. hashtag. you said they were easy. hashtag delicious, i think. i think they're pretty straightforward and if not, i'm providing the recipes. i don't develop recipe, but the recipes that i use to get me there. all right, there you have it. danny sanchez salads on the list. no, no salads. only apps and snacks. okay, we're keeping it fluffy
6:51 am
this holiday season. keep you warm. i'll get you. i'll get you back to your sanchez salad in january. it's good because it keeps us warm on a cold morning like this. yes, and i'm going for the coffee this morning because we've had temperatures in some spots dip into the 30s, but we're mostly seeing 40s as we take a look at this map as we sample four of our microclimates. looking at san jose, it's at 47 now, 45, in palo alto and nice and sunny but cooler in walnut creek. we're in the low 40s. and let's take a look at our sunshine, the dry weather that continues, and check in on the water year, because we know that last month we had so much rainfall in the north bay and we're still at a pretty big surplus there. after getting nearly 16in of rainfall since october 1st. and while in oakland, we've had only a little more than a half an inch and a half of rainfall. san francisco had four inches, which puts them at a slight surplus for this date. but everywhere else we are
6:52 am
really lacking, and only at about 45 to 50% of our normal amount of rainfall. while santa rosa is still over 300% of its normal amount of rainfall. after that, once again, big atmospheric river that we had last month and now temperatures are above normal, headed for the upper 60s and low 70s. and we're usually seeing temperatures on this date right at about 59 to 60 degrees. so you can see that even though we do have a cool start, it will be a warmer day headed for the upper 60s for much of the peninsula. and in san francisco will be in the mid 60s downtown and in the mission district in the north bay. 67 for that high in sonoma. looking ahead, the storm system still driven to the north as high pressure remains across the region. no rain here, at least through the middle of the month. while the climate prediction center is showing that we're going to see pretty dry conditions all across the west.
6:53 am
while it's kind of the opposite for the east coast, they're getting a lot of rainfall and above average rain expected over the next couple of weeks. so for us, we're in the 60s for highs, morning temperatures in the 40s. it will get a little bit cooler next week. but that's actually going to be closer to what's normal for the middle of december. and looking at more of the same temperatures in san francisco. mike, you were tracking multiple incidents in the south bay concerned because i saw a lot of things pop up on the chp grid. we have north 101 about the airport. it's over on the shoulder now. so didn't really cause any additional slowing. and that's good because that is the commute direction with a little bit more extended build from capital expressway up over toward oakland road. the other incident in the same area is southbound and not presenting an issue southbound around trimble disabled vehicle. but in the south county, this is the bigger i issue coming in out of san martin, up and through morgan hill. we've had this continued issue right around cochrane, this crash still affecting lanes. so they're restricting traffic there. a typical build for the east bay.
6:54 am
back to you. thank you. mike. happening now san francisco banking giant wells fargo is vacating its longtime headquarters, the company confirming plans to move from its montgomery street high rise to a more modern building in the financial district. the spokesperson cites recent assessments of the company's real estate and calls it a move to better manage costs. wells fargo has no plans to relocate to another city, they say. and for that, we're glad. all right. and we're back with a look at our top stories this morning, including breaking news out of new york city. the ceo of a major health care insurance company, shot and killed. also, oaklandting set to turn the page after recalling the mayor. voters will have a final say in replacing sheng thao. until then, it's up to the city to decide an update on how that choice will be made. plus, the first look in the check in with investigative reporter candice nguyen, a san jose special education student who's hard of hearing, receives a high school diploma. the problem is, he says he's struggling with basic

is after reports emerged of that shooting. police are investigating the shooting as a targeted attack. now another top story this morning. jurors starting deliberations in the high profile murder trial of nima momeni. he is accused of stabbing cash app co-founder bob lee last april in san francisco. the defense just wrapped up its closing arguments yesterday, claiming lee was high on drugs and attacked momeni, who then stabbed lee to death in order to protect himself. if convicted, alemany may face life in prison. oakland leaders today will lay out a plan to replace recalled mayor sheng thao. council president nikki fortunato bass will reveal the proposed timeline for selecting a new mayor in a special election. council members also plan to go over the recent report from the city attorney. that report details when mayor thao will officially be removed as well as a selection of an interim mayor. until that special election takes place. all right. let's take a look at our forecast this morning. still so weird to be in

december and be so dry. it is dry and we sometimes do get these spells during our wet months where we're looking ahead in the forecast, like where is the rain? but that's what we're settling into for the next few days. i can tell you where the slowing is. it's getting out of san francisco, south 101 one incident cleared around silver a second in the same area now slows folks heading south out of the city. all right. thank you mike. today's show is coming up ahead. and we are continuing today in the bay on roku and other streaming platforms. we're going to talk with the leader of one east bay city getting ready for a festive night tonight as they prepare to light up their holiday tree. watch our 8 a.m. newscast right here on nbc bay area dot com or on our smartphone app. all right. and just remember, 20 days until christmas. that is wild. good wednesday morning. if you are about to head out the dooryou better bundle up. >> temperatures are plunging, and al is tracking a new round of snow.
