the community left shocked after a gunman opened fire at a small northern california school, leaving two kindergarten students in critical condition. the new details we're learning about that shooter. plus verdict watch continues in the murder trial of nima momeni. the jury now deciding the fate of the man accused of killing cash app founder bob lee in san francisco. also, a manhunt underway in new york. this is to find the person who murdered the ceo of unitedhealthcare on a busy street of manhattan before disappearing into central park. the latest details on that investigation. this is today in the bay. and good morning to you on this thursdaday. i'm mcus washington and i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for laura garcia this morning. good morning to you, mike. hope the roads are slow. we want to get a look at that forecast with meteorologist kari hall. i was saying maybe a little autopilot right now. i think so. i mean, it's a nice
5:02 am
week. every morning is exactly the same. every afternoon is the same. and so we're settling into this pattern that continues for at least the next few days. here's a look at some of our live cameras and the current temperatures. it is 46 now in palo alto, san jose, checking in at 50 degrees, and we're at 47 in walnut creek. and once again, our highs are back to the upper 60s. i only had the chance to the temperatures up or down a degree or two. so it's about the same as yesterday with san francisco up to 64 today and 68 degrees in dublin and 68 in napa, with some low 70s once again for the south county. we'll get a look ahead to the weekend and some things going on coming up in a few minutes. but mike, you're already tracking a crash involving a big rig. yeah, and it's an issue not because of the injuries. we're looking at the bay area view of the green sensors. we take you up to the east shore freeway. it's counter commute, so even less of it on the tally of concerns, but it is a reportedly a fuel truck. so
5:03 am
we're watching. i believe everything is on the right shoulder counter commute. going to watch this one until everything and everybody is clear of the scene without any issues. eastbound 80 right around potrero. there is that fuel truck on the shoulder and another vehicle involved in the crash. meanwhile, i saw some slower sensors at the golden gate bridge. looks like they've gone back to green. there are crews on the north side of marin county coming into the city, so we'll watch until they're completely clear. back to you. thank you. mike. a really difficult morning this morning. a suspected gunman is dead and two students are in the hospital following a shooting at an elementary school in butte county. it happened around 108 yesterday afternoon. calls came in about a gunman on campus at the feather river adventist church in oroville, just southeast of chico. within minutes, california highway patrol was there on the scene. two kindergarten boys, aged five and six, had been shot. both children are in extremely critical condition. police secured the campus and brought the rest of the students to an
5:04 am
off campus reunification center, and the sheriff says they learned the shooter had been dropped off by an uber driver and was at that school to meet with the principal about potentially enrolling a student. i'm told that that meeting went was cordial. there wasn't anything about the meeting that gave rise to concerns by the administrator. now, sheriff's deputies are still trying to figure out if the meeting was a ruse in order to get onto the campus, or if it was a real meeting. officials believe this was a targeted attack on the school because of its affiliation with the seventh day adventist church. well, today marks the first full day of jury deliberations in the high profile san francisco murder trial. jurors are weighing the fate of nima momeni, who, like you know by now, probably. prosecutors say murdered tech ceo bob lee. today in the bay's bob redell is live this morning. bob, jurors, they have a lot to consider. correct. exactly. good
5:05 am
morning to you, marcus and kris. starting with the potential charge during the trial. both sides agreed, and neither side argued. lee was stabbed to death in april of 2023 during a tense encounter involving many. he's the suspect. the question jurors must answer is what led up to the stabbing? the defense has argued lee was actually brandishing the knife, which he then used in self-defense. the actual weapon was never presented in court as evidence, but after jurors received the case yesterday, the judge instructed them they must consider a single count of first degree murder with an enhancement of using a deadly weapon. but if they cannot reach a unanimous verdict on that, they can consider the lesser charge of second degree murder or even voluntary or involuntary manslaughter. outside court yesterday, lee's ex-wife talked about friends of theirs awaiting word from the jury offering his
5:06 am
love and sympathy, and said i can be on the next flight here. it's, you know, don't worry, honey, we'll let you know when we hopefully, fingers crossed, we will have something to celebrate. but this is not exactly something that you want to celebrate. our hearts are all broken. nima momeni mother was also at the courthouse yesterday but did not talk with the media. deliberations are scheduled to resume this morning, sometime around 930. reporting live, bob redell today in the bay. thank you. bob, when that jury reaches a decision, we will break into programing and bring you that verdict. we will also send a breaking news alert to our nbc bay area app, along with complete coverage here on nbc bay area. the manhunt continues for the shooter who killed the ceo of united health care. this was outside of a hilton hotel in new york, just blocks away from rockefeller center. now a warning for you. the images we're about to show some would consider graphic, and you may find them upsetting. nypd detectives, they are saying that they don't have a motive at this
5:07 am
time, but every indication is that this was premeditated, targeted attack. 50 year old brian thompson arrived in new york on monday from minnesota to speak at united health care's annual investor conference at a hilton hotel. he can be seen in the surveillance video here. yesterday morning, walking down west 54th street. that's when that man you see there in the dark jacket with a gray backpack pulls out the gun, firing at thompson three times. all of this happened in front of a woman who was able to run away unharmed. a man also watched this all unfold from his car. a shock, you know, because it's the first time i see crying in front of me. i was shocked and i felt that she could shoot me too. now, this photo was released of that mass shooter at a nearby store. this was before the attack. police say that that gunman took off through an alley, hopped on an e-bike, then rode into central park. thompson is survived by his wife and two sons. a live look now at the u.s. capitol, where a long awaited measure to provide relief for wildfire victims is
5:08 am
now headed to president biden's desk. california u.s. senator alex padilla and north bay representative mike thompson spearheaded this legislation. it is a tax exemption on financial settlements for the victims of power related wildfires. it's been in the works for years. on the senate floor, padilla cited outdated tax codes and called its approval a new opportunity for victims who've lost everything. disaster settlement funds aren't income. it's not an asset. it's compensation for what a family has lost. it's meant to be an opportunity to begin to rebuild your life. but he also noted that more than 70,000 people suffered losses in just three recent northern california fires. the north bay firestorm of 2017, the 2018 camp fire, and the 2015 butte fire in amador county. president biden

is expected to sign the bill. taking a live look at san francisco this morning, it is all clear there, so i bet a little chilly overnight. kari. yes, and we started out with cool mornings across the bay area. it's also going to be nice and sunny as we take a look at what to expect. of course jacket weather, but also watching out for some patchy fog and parts of the low lying valleys and some of the inland areas. but this afternoon will be hazy once again, and we're headed for a mild and dry weekend for much of the bay area. looking at temperatures now in the low to mid 40s. for the north bay, it's 44. in sonoma and in santa rosa, and it's 41 in danville and san jose, 50 degrees as you're heading out. but we are going to be near record highs once again. santa rosa may be jt 1 degrees shy of a record high temperature for this afternoon. so we continue with, well above normal temperatures, at least for the next few days. we'll talk about
5:10 am
some minor changes ahead coming up in a few minutes. mike's been tracking where we can find some lower gas prices. yeah. now, i'll be honest. livermore still leads the lows for the state, so certainly the best in the bay area, alameda county. but we're going to move over nearby contra costa county, give a check of the best prices there. and that's concord with 345 at bond fair market on willow pass road for our top number in the city. san francisco's best is more by a dime at double time. 355 at their spot on mission street and in the south bay, you need to go to the big box costco. they list 369 as their best, both at the santa clara shop as well as the sunnyvale site. you can check all those spots around the bay at gasbuddy.com. let's get to the roadways where we're looking at green sensors for the most part. coming out of the altamont pass, you expect a little slowing. westbound, there is a disabled vehicle west 580, where it merges with 205, not presenting much of a delay. you're looking at at speed for vasco road coming down from contra costa county toward five 8580 itself. you saw that a little bit of slowing typical out of the altamont highway 4.
5:11 am
you're still at speed. back to you. all right. thanks so much, mike. well, coming up for you right here on today in the bay. one local company is helping move the bay area forward. getting there on time. getting there. with a clear head, most families show up exhausted. still ahead here on today in the bay, the new pilot program that is now offering free rides to families of children with brain tumors. the stock market hits new records, as does bitcoin. it crosses a major milestone. much

taking a live look outside in palo alto. as we go throughout the morning, we go from upper 40s to upper 50s at 11:00 and at noon we're in the low 60s. it's going to be very much like yesterday. a few more clouds in the mix and still looking a little hazy. we're helping you make weekend plans with the look ahead with the forecast coming up in a few minutes. and we're looking here towards san francisco from our camera in emeryville. that's the bay bridge. you see westbound with those tail lights into the city uninterrupted on the span and no pause over at the toll plaza either. we're still too early for your traditional backup here. we'll see how things should be creeping up in the north bay. coming up. well good morning. very happy thursday to yo the s&p 500, the dow and

the nasdaq all hit new all time highs on wednesday. the dow crossing 45,000 for the first time ever. salesforce in san francisco says it's going to hire more than 1000 new employees, mostly in sales. jetblue cutting routes again to all kinds of places and shutting down operations in san jose. no more jetblue there. fed chairman jay powell spoke at the new york times dealbook conference wednesday said the american economy was doing well, meaning the fed did not have to be in a hurry to move interest rates. their next meeting is in the middle of the month after resisting as long as it could. chipotle is raising prices. the chain blames the high price of avocados and beef. not a big price hike, about 2%. and the district attorney for washington, d.c. is suing amazon for slow delivery in poorer areas. the lawsuit says amazon hands over deliveries, responsibilities to the u.s. post office and ups in lower

income zip codes, and that delays packages. and amazon spokesperson acknowledges that that's true, but says it's been forced to over concerns for driver safety. the ag says fine but you can't charge those homes. prime membership prices for benefits they're not getting. and the price of bitcoin has crossed above 100,000 for the first time. on hopes the trump administration will ease regulations around cryptocurrency. bitcoin advocates have long predicted the made up money would hit 100,000. those same advocates often promote bitcoin as an actual currency, something that you can spend. but of course, both things can't be true. you can't have something that constantly gains or loses value. that also works as a currency. case in point, tesla announced it would accept bitcoin at its showrooms for payments for cars back in february of 2021. at the time, bitcoin was worth about $39,000, so you could just about
5:17 am
buy a model three with a single bitcoin. but that single bitcoin today is worth $100,000, and you can buy three teslas with the same amount of money. so you shouldn't have bought that tesla with bitcoin. there was the classic case of the guy bought two pizzas with 10,000 bitcoin when it was first invented, right? billion dollars. wow. you know, i remember when you first started talking about that, i always thought that i was like, well, if the currency can go up or down, i mean, it's an janet nguyen when inflation went up 9%, right? bitcoin is up something like 60%. can i ask a question? yes. doesn't the dollar fluctuate? it does. but but barely. just little ups and downs. and we get very upset. yeah bitcoin is ups and downs like this. yeah. up a lot. up a lot. hey it's making money on it. that's fine. that's how i try to drive a car with no payment. thank you very much scott. well new this morning getting your sick child to a doctor's appointment is stressful enough for just an average child. but for the

families of children battling brain tumors, worrying about transportation is really the last thing they need on their minds. that is the reason the pediatric brain tumor foundation partnered with uber in less than a month. the ptf provided credits to 92 families. it's a pilot program that the foundation ceo hopes they don't have to worry about taking mass transportation. they don't have to worry about the car that they may not have. they don't have to worry about anything. and this is a main stress point for families. having been one of those families getting to and from your appointments and getting there on time, it's a big deal. now, as i mentioned, the pediatric brain tumor foundation is hoping to expand this partnership with uber. they are also encouraging families to continue to ask for help if they need it. you can learn more about that and find the pediatric brain tumor resources at cure the kids.org. well, the roman colosseum comes to saturday night live this weekend and so it shall be. a fight to

the death. why? for glory and for truth. that's funny. the gladiator two actor paul mescal actually is this weekend's host. he's coming off of a busy month. this is following the premiere of the highly anticipated seque. gladiator two has raked in more an $55 million domestic box office price, and paul mescal actually kicks off the final four shows of 2024 alongside musical guest shaboozey. we're going to get a little bit tipsy. yeah, that song is hot. for those who are wondering, shaboozey did not do the soundtrack for gladiator two. as far as i know. i get a good mix. i can't even imagine it together. i can't even imagine it together. squeezing in there somewhere. but it's not. all right. let's go lookt that forecast for you this morning. shaboozey got a soundtrack for us. don't know, i only i only know the one song. it's not even cabrillo street. it's okay. it's a chilly, breezy. breezy. breez.
5:20 am
shazam! shazam! i just making up words. i don't know what's going on right now. all right, let's get a look at our wide view of the satellite and radar, where we are seeing some clouds and even some light rain moving closer to the bay area. the bigger storm system still well off the coast. and as we go throughout the morning, we are going to see a few more clouds in the mix. and for parts of the north bay, some spotty light showers near the coast and around ukiah. so just as you're heading out, you may feel that, but overall it's going to quickly clear out and really not affect much of the rest of the bay area. here's a look at our temperatures for today in the upper 60s. 67 in cupertino with sunshine and low 70s for gilroy again today. we're also going to see a lot of 60s for the east bay, with walnut creek reaching 68 degrees and 67 in fremont. notice these temperatures are about the same that we've had
5:21 am
all throughout the week. we start out with jacket weather, but then later on during the day, it starts to feel a little bit more comfortable. you're probably peeling off some of those layers. we're going to see a high of 68 degrees in santa rosa as well as napa. and then looking at our forecast for tonight for the warriors game, it's going to be in the upper 50s and all clear and a light wind in san francisco. looking ahead we are going to see more weather like that. we are going to see those temperatures heading up and down very quickly. no rain in the forecast through at least next thursday. we'll be wrapping up our weekend with a 49ers game here back home, and it's going to be beautiful. really perfect weather continues into our weekend with upper 60s for the start of the game, and then looking at the rest of the forecast, it will be a little bit cooler early next week. highs will drop down to the mid 60s, even lower 60s and our overnight lows in the mid 30s. that is a bit closer to what we usually see for this time of
5:22 am
year. it has been warm for the season. and mike, you're seeing the north bay commute starting up right. unpredictable timing right here. highway y 37 out of vallejo, mare island. there's where the sensors start to change, typically first in the bay, next up we should see some slowing just a bit coming into concord over the next few minutes. smooth drive at the bay bridge toll plaza. so far, smooth throughout the south bay. i want to point out one crash i've been tracking. it's north 101. as you're coming up toward metcalf and bailey. no slowing shows up. the activity still there on the chp report for the monterey jurisdiction. so we continue to follow that. it is the commute coming in from the south county. we do see a little build coming in to san martin. that does indicate the volume starting to increase for that first burst, about 20 minutes in san jose. back to you. thanks, mike. all right. much more ahead for you this morning on today in the bay, including nbc bay area response. she thinks a utility broke her gas line, but the company won't pay to repair it. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. nbc bay area responds next. it's day one of the 12

5:27 am
does that mean? patricia got a check for $9,973 pg&e let us know it does free gas safety checks for service lines and appliances. you can schedule one by calling that number right there. 800 743 5000. if you think a company isn't following through on a promise, let us know. snap the qr code on screen right now to fill out our consumer complaint form online. 526 this morning. thanks, chris. all right. so top stories we're following today, including a look at your weekend forecast. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we all can expect. plus, what if you're for just one day? your office was the nba all star game or the super bowl, right? how cool is that for people who are local to the bay area? the bay area hosting some very big events in the next year or two. and the group bringing those events here wants our workforce to be ready to benefit. we'll show you how they are partnering with a nonprofit

know, just enjoying the nice weather. and it is definitely chilly outside this morning as we take a look at our air quality. this is one thing that has been of concern in this stretch of nice weather is that we are seeing the hazy sky a little bit more pollution that's settling into the valleys, and the worst of our air quality is for the coast and the bay. the east bay, as well as santa clara valley. and as we take a live look outside in san rafael, a clear start. and in the mid 40s right now will hold steady in the 40s through 8:00 and then start to see those temperatures warming up with lots of sunshine as we head back to close to record highs again for this afternoon. we'll talk about the weekend coming up. but mike, right now you're seeing a little bit more slowing. these are not slowing over here. highway 4picl coming into pittsburgh. the bay bridge shows a little slowing as well as we take a look at the sensors. we see that on the incline but no backup at the toll plaza. still too early for that. should be about another 15 minutes before, maybe 20 minutes before we see any visible backup
5:33 am
here. the metering lights likely turned on, though. in the next ten. in the south bay you see the little signs of that break tapping for north 101. in san jose. no big surprises there. and outside the altamont pass, the east bay tri-valley looking great for speeds back to you. thank you. mike. tragedy at a northern california school. law enforcement expected to update us on the investigation into yesterday's school shooting in butte county, in which two kindergartners were badly hurt. today in the bay's bob redell joining us live this morning. and, bob, do we know how those children are doing? according to the last update. good morning to you, marcus and chris from the butte county sheriff's office yesterday, the two boys, five and six years old, were still in the hospital and an extremely critical condition. again, we are hoping to get another update later this afternoon when the butte county sheriff is supposed to speak to the media. it was just after 1:00 yesterday afternoon. a man with a gun began shooting at the feather river adventist school.
5:34 am
adventist school? this is on the outskirts of oroville, that small city in butte county, southeast of chico. if you're not familiar. about 35 students and teachers were on campus at the time. about 15 minutes later, officers responding to the 911 call found the suspected shooter dead on campus from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. they also rendered aid to the two young kindergartners who had been shot, one of whom had to be flown to the hospital. the sheriff says the shooter was an adult who was dropped off at the school by an uber driver, says he met with administrators to inquire about enrolling a family member at the school. it was a very apparently a cordial meeting and then shortly after he began shooting, we're trying to determine the veracity of that statement as to whether or not he actually was there to enroll or talk about enrolling a student, or if that was instead a ruse to get onto the campus. i also saw them. the shooter, go across a window, like pacing
5:35 am
back and forth, and then we were running to the gym. i looked back and i saw a shadow with a gun. so i told most people to run even faster. you can't understand it. you just. i can't understand it. so i just hope to god those children are well and get better. investigators now think the shooting could have been targeted because of the school's affiliation with the seventh day adventist church adventist church. apologies again for mispronouncing that they put other affiliated schools in the area on alert. the remaining students who weren't hurt were bused to a local church to be reunited with their parents. we're also told the fbi has joined this investigation. reporting live, bob redell today in the bay. we're wishing the best for those families. thank you. bob. well, this morning, day two of deliberations. this is in the high profile murder trial of nima momeni. it's set to begin.
5:36 am
now, verdict could come down as early as today. that jury, now weighing the evidence from the trial, accused of killing cash app co-founder bob lee in san francisco last year. prosecutors accused of killing bob lee in a confrontation over his sister. the defense argues that stabbing was in self-defense. lee's ex-wife says that she hopes for a guilty verdict. hopefully, fingers crossed we will have something to celebrate. but this is not exactly something that you want to celebrate. our hearts are all broken. well, if jurors cannot unanimously come up with a verdict of first-degree murder, they can consider a lesser charge of second degree murder along with voluntary or involuntary manslaughter charges. 535 for you right now and a group bringing events like the super bowl and nba all star game to the bay area are working to move the bay area forward by helping score permanent jobs for people
5:37 am
trying to make it in the bay. bay area host committee is partnering with bay area nonprofit tipping point. this is to make sure that people all around the bay area are ready to get hired for those big events, which could open the door for permanent employment. now, the goal here is to enroll 500 people across the bay area in workforce development program to staff the nba all star game next year and super bowl 60 and fifa world cup when they come to the bay area in 2026. traditionally, when events like this with the super bowl come to town, jobs are filling by the staffing agencies that don't have vested interest in keeping those jobs local. this partnership aims to make sure that workers are trained for long term jobs. this is in fields like hospitality and transportation, so the dollars they earn benefit themselves and local communitie. they may not be local in the market, they may have worked multiple events across the country and just come into the bay area to work the event. that's kind of up next. and they may not actually target
5:38 am
underrepresented populations and therefore may not have the local impact that we really want to see in the bay area. not only will the dollars stay in those communities stay local, but the jobs that people will have in maintain after these events are done will be a huge boost to the economy as well. now, this partnership between bay area host committee and tipping point is a pilot program which has the support of the nba and nfl. they're really hoping bay area businesses and community leaders get on board as well. i love it. why shouldn't those jobs stay local? right? hello. all right. south bay families got a tree up just in time for the holidays. catholic charities of santa clara county and one giving tree partnered to give out 200 christmas trees to families in need of a bit of help. according to data from real estate company zillow, santa clara county is the fourth most expensive county in the country to live in, and some people say getting a real tree is a luxury they just can't afford. but at the event, there
5:39 am
were a lot of smiles as families who might not otherwise be able to afford a christmas tree walked away with one. it's so helpful knowing that right now during the holiday, it's really stressful and knowing that we can get this help, it means a lot. we're doing a very small part to try to really just ease the holidays for families. how many people who got a tree say that they didn't have the resources to buy a real tree, and now having the christmas tree this time of year is a highlight of the holiday. taking a live look now at dublin this morning, traffic flowing smoothly but the temperature is kind of holding steady. kari yeah, it has been a very cold out there and if you're going out to enjoy the sights of the season, make sure that you're layered up, especially this evening, walking lacosta drive in brentwood and enjoying the lights there. it's going to be in the mid 50s right as the sun
5:40 am
sets and then continuing to cool off quickly later on tonight. and then tomorrow we have the. let's go ss sf the holiday projection around the city and it all kicks off tomorrow evening at 5:00. and there it's also going to be in the 50s. we're seeing that temperature pretty commonly, especially in the evenings as the sun sets and temperatures really start to drop. downtown ice happening this evening and until january 20th. so each night we are going to have some nice and dry weather for us at least in the near term. looking at mary healdsburg, the tree lighting celebration happening on tomorrow, it's going to be right at about 61 degrees and then coming down to the mid 50s by 7:00. if you're out there late on saturday, friday into saturday, we're going to also have the san rafael lighted boat parade this weekend. and at 6:00 in san rafael, it will be right at about 56 degrees. so cool and clear. and our weather is
5:41 am
staying dry into the weekend, no matter what. you have planned to celebrate the season and mike, we're not seeing any surprises on our commute right now. not if you've been playing the home game of traffic building. as we talk about this is what we warned you. the metering lights and the backup starting right on schedule here at the bay bridge. no surprises in the maze or on the span itself. a little build for richmond, which we expect at this time. there's 37. there's highway four continuing to show more build. so more slowing because of the volume of traffic they're looking ahead. want you to expect this chase center. the warriors will be playing tonight. so hopefully that hometown crowd gives them that little boost. only needed a few more points last game, making over the w side there tonight. looking at the rest of the bay woodside continues with the daytime work, so watch their 9 to 2 p.m, 9 to 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. there will be some work going on in woodside, so watch highway 84 through the city streets out of menlo park and highway 84 overnight. again, they continue with their restrictions for parking and changes between palo

right now at 544, as we take a look at santa rosa and what to expect this morning. we're right now in the mid 40s and it's all clear. we will see a few clouds in the mix as we go throughout the morning into the afternoon, but we'll be back in the upper 60s for later today. we'll talk about a slight cooldown in our forecast for the early part of next w week. that's coming up ia few minutes. and we're looking at the taillights. southbound 101 through san rafael, right at north san pedro. we're looking

at typical commute in that direction. northbound. there may be some lane restrictions. there's debris reported in the area, and i do see those headlights stop from time to time right as they approach north san pedro as well. we'll try to sort things out for you for the north bay and the rest of your commute coming up. well, president elect donald trump's pick for defense secretary, pete hegseth, says he stopped drinking. and scott. he says that he'll stay away from the alcohol if he gets the job. yeah, that's the promise he's made. he made these promises. in an interview with megyn kelly. and republican senators say he's made that commitment to them in private as well. hegseth met with iowa senator joni ernst on wednesday, who remained uncommitted as to whether he would vote or she rather would vote in his favor. nbc news talked with ten current former fox news employees said hegseth had been drunk at work. the new yorker said hegseth faced the same accusations at two charities. he ran. he says trump wants him to keep fighting for his job. that's what donald trump asked me to do. your job
5:47 am
is to bri a war fighting ethos back to the pentagon. your job is to make sure that it's lethality, lethality, lethality, everything else is gone. everything else that distracts from that shouldn't be happening. that's the message i'm hearing from senators in that advise and consent process. it's been a wonderful process. the editorial board at the wall street journal, meantime, is giving robert f kennedy jr a thumbs down as he fights to become the next secretary of health and human services. the conservative board says his nomination is a threat to medical progress. the journal says if kennedy, who has spread misinformation about vaccines, were a democratic nominee, republican senators would reject him as, quote, a threat to public health. other names president elect trump wants paul atkins to run the securities and exchange commission. jared isaacman to run nasa. atkins is very well qualified. he's a former sec commissioner. very well liked in washington as well. isaacman if that name

sounds familiar, he's the billionaire pilot and entrepreneur who commanded that private space mission and became the first private astronaut to conduct a space walk. if confirmed, he would be the third nasa administrator to have previously flown in space, including the current nasa administrator, bill nelson. utah senator mitt romney announced last fall he would retire at the end of the term, and that's coming soon as the republican party has changed, romney has gone from his party's top choice to be president to someone the maga calls rino republican in name only. i've been in public service for 25 years. i have learned that politics alone cannot measure up to the challenges we face. our country's character is a reflection not just of its elected officials, but also of its people. i leave washington to return to be one among them and hope to be a voice of unity
5:49 am
and virtue for it is only if the american people merit his benevolence that god will continue to bless america. romney said. there were those who want to, quote, tear at unity in our country and replace love with hate. one bit of trivia about romney, which really kind of isn't trivial at all. as governor of massachusetts, he was the first to institute an idea born in a republican conservative think tank, universal health care. they called it romneycare. america eventually adopted the same idea with the affordable care act. kris obamacare. back in the day when people worked together and good ideas were just good ideas. thank you very much, scott. all new this morning. the nfl is making a change to its drug policy involving marijuana. that is according to a memo that was sent to agents and players. the league is raising the thc level for a positive test. thc is the substance that is primarily responsible for the effects of marijuana on a person's mental
5:50 am
state. it's also reducing the fines imposed on players who test positive for thc at those levels, or who miss their thc tests. their new policy goes into effect tomorrow. the warriors, meanwhile, suddenly facing a little turbulence. not only are they in the midst of what is now a five game losing streak, but two star players, they will be out of the lineup tonight in the first back to back games over at chase center. steph curry is out with what's been called knee pain. draymond green has calf calf tightness and that has already caused him to miss two of the past games. tonight the dubs host houston. tomorrow night they'll host minnesota while the golden state warriors take on the houston rockets tonight. as marcus mentioned at the chase center. but hours before the game time we are seeing it rain on the basketball court. doo doo doo doo doo doo. yeah. harlem globetrotters. yeah! they're coming back to the bay area in a new year. this is this morning.
5:51 am
one of the globetrottersrs is actually here on today in the bay with ginger conejero saab out there. and ginger as i understand it, the globetrotters. you want to give steph three runs for the money i mean what are you what are you doing. he's like i'm ready. put me in coach. he's ready. he's not called buckets for no reason. i mean he's not just called buckets for whatever reason. guys. good morning. good morning to you. we are inside chase center this morning i know the warriors are going to be on this court later tonight, but way before that we're going to show you some basketball magic. we're joined by jason buckets barrera of the harlem globetrotters. they're going to be back in town next year. buckets. tell me first how you got your name. why call you buckets? good morning. good morning. great morning actually. so the reason why they call me buckets is because i'm an exceptional shooter from everywhere on the court. i can shoot the three point, the mid range and i can even dunk a little bit. you know, despite my height. all right okay. well we're going to see that. we're going to see some of those
5:52 am
tricks. and i mean talk to me about what you love about being i let her do that for camera. all right i'm just kidding. talk to us about the tricks. the spins. yes. all the magic of the harlem globetrotters. what keeps it new and fresh for you? yeah. so the harlem globetrotters visit over 350 markets this year. and the next year. and the fact that the harlem globetrotters travel all around the world and bring the best brand of trick hoops and alley. oops, there's no game like it. let's see it. let's see, let's see it. let's see what we got. i put my hair up for this. so we're okay. let's let's see it. buckets now. whoa, whoa. i told you i'm not even 6:00 bouncy. not even 6:00 in the morning. yeah. you know, i got to warm the legs up. you got to warm the legs up. i know i was trying to stretch them out myself, right. i know you talk about all the best tricks and trades when you guys travel around the world. do you pick up things depending on like which countries, which markets you go to? i mean, so we travel, like i said, all around the us and we go international as well. and there's players who've been on the team for like
5:53 am
15, 20 years. so you can always pick up things from the vets. and you know, the one thing i learned, the most important thing as a globetrotter is to spin on the finger. if you cannot do a spin on the finger, you're out. go home. just go home. there's no point of it right? you can't do the spin of the finger. that's a logo right there. so that's the most important trick right here. all right. well i'm going to show you a trick. trick. let's see what you got. let's see let's see let's see let's see what you got. so your jump shot a little bit i saw you. yeah. oh that was we didn't get that on camera but okay. this is your rebound. this is for the seventh grader b team point guard in me. that's right. we're not live. we're not live. go again. whoa! oh, no. you know what it is? it's the court. i know it is, but. wewell, so the magic of the globetrotters. come on. there you go. there we go. there you go, guys. all right. now we're going to bring you much more. we're going to bring you much more in the next hour. buckets. we're going to be practicing for the next hour. yeah. we'll get you right. hey, ginger, get me right. coach wants to know if you're available tonight. we need some help. yeah, we got an early
5:54 am
morning tomorrow. i don't know, guys. that's the only reason. did you tell buck? because he doesn't want to mess with you once you get warmed up, i promise you, you look like a future globetrotter. they say you don't want to mess with me when i get warmed up. i don't think. i don't know what i'm talking about. swiper. let's go. just like you did before she got those handles. cross over swipe. sam. i'm seeing. i'm seeing the team player. she can pass it. next thing we're gonna do is a dunk right off the backboard. the dunk. all right, well, check out the dunk. okay. legs here. boom. okay. you gotta jump and dunk it. oh it's like when you do like dunking is easy. all you gotta do is just jump i gotta jump, jump. look, i gotta do a jump. all you gotta do is jump. you have to do jump for the 6:00 hour we'll give you a few minutes to work on that. she's got to warm up a little bit. come on. buckets. hold on. oh, you have to do too much too early. i love when we use a regular person to show that it
5:55 am
is not as easy as they make it. look, you know, it is ugly for regular people. all right, well, we'll let ginger practice a few more of those shots. we're going to get a look at what to expect with our forecast. and there's a lot of clouds out there in the pacific, but it's been blocked by high pressure. although we have seen a few of those spotty showers sliding in under the radar as we start out this morning, some light rain moving in farther to the north. and it's also affecting the coastal areas in sonoma county and extending over toward lake county. so watch out for those spotty showers this morning that will eventually clear out within the next couple of hours. and then we're back to the sunshine and high temperatures in the upper 60s for today. in napa today, 68 degrees will be the high once again. also, upper 60s for dublin and 68 for san jose. really not much of a change from what we've seen all week long. and that continues tomorrow. and just a touch cooler in some spots on saturday. i think it's going to be more in the way of
5:56 am
that morning fog that lingers in the valls, keeeeping tho temperatures cooler for the inland areas and we just got an update of the drought monitor just a few minutes ago. let's check in with a look at the widespread drought that we're seeing across the country. but for the bay area, we are now being removed from the abnormally dry conditions. for the most part, we are still seeing some dry conditions farther to the south. for the bay area, it's mainly the tri-valley and for the foothills, those areas that didn't get a lot of the rainfall with that last atmospheric river. and then the sierra snowpack is doing amazing. it's at 134% of the normal amount, but unfortunately we don't see any more storm systems coming our way, at least not for the next week. so our 7-day forecast shows it will be dry and temperatures holding steady. marcus. all right. thanks so much, kari. well, happening now stanford health care is reportedly looking to expand service inside its palo alto facilities. the school recently asked the city for permission to
