the latest on the shocking murder of an insurance executive on the streets of new york. police releasing new pictures, showing the face of a person of interest. unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson was gunned down in what police say was a targeted attack. we begin with nbc's chris pollone. >> reporter: new pictures showing the face of a suspected killer. new york city police releasing these, hoping someone can identify the man who they believe shot and killed a health insurance ceo on a manhattan sidewalk. >> it does appear that the victim was specifically targeted. but, at this point, we do not know why. >> reporter: the pictures showing the suspect's face captured at a hostel on new york's upper west side where it's believed he stayed before the shooting. in what might be a hint to a possible motive, a senior new york city law enforcement official says police recovered shell casings inscribed with the words deny, defend, depose on them. surveillance video shows the gunman calmly walking up onto

the sidewalk and shooting brian thompson in the back and leg before running away. he's seen on surveillance buying a bottle of water and a snack thompson's wife is heartbroken. >> brian was a wonderful person with a big heart who lived life to the fullest. >> this is the safest big city in america. >> reporter: eric adams, a former nypd captain insisted the killer will be caught. >> we feel we're moving at a steady pace, and we're going to have someone apprehended. >> reporter: there's a $10,000 reward for information leading to the killer's capture. chris pollone, nbc news. out west, california residents were rattled by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake erupting off the northern coast, thursday morning. noaa issued a tsunami warning for hundreds of miles of klose line, stretching from california's bay area all the

way to southern oregon, forcing evacuation orders to move inland immediately. that warning was lifted a little over an hour after the quake. in humboldt county, the area closest to the epicenter, about 10,000 people lost power. luckily, there were no deaths or injuries reported. california's governor declared a state of emergency and said damage assessments will continue first thing this morning. we are learning more about that shooting at a school inin rural california. two young children were injured. are lucky to be pay live. they the suspectegunman then took his own life, turns out, he had been to the school the day before, meeting with a school official. here's nbc's jesse kirsch. >> reporter: in northern california, authorities are trying to figure out why a man allegedly opened fire at feather river adventist school, shooting two kindergartners before turning the gun on himself. >> when you're talking about little kids like this who can't

defend themselves, it really does tear at the heart. >> reporter: the sheriff saying the boys, 5 and 6 years old, were taken to the hospital in critical condition. the suspect was found dead with a handgun near by. >> shots tired, 27 cox lane december highway 70 and simpson road. >> reporter: according to the sheriff, the suspect had a cordial meeting with the school principal about enrolllling a student. it's unclear if that was just a ruse. >> shortly after concluding that meeting, the principal heard shots being fired and screams. >> reporter: joslin orlando says she raced to hide in the gym. >> i looked back and saw a shadow with a gun, so i told most people to run even faster. >> reporter: so far investigators have not announced any definitive motive. >> we have received some information that he may have targeted this school because of its affiliation with the seventh day adventist church. >> reporter: authorities say the small k-8 school has fewer than

40 students. no school resource officer is stationed there. and no security guard was on site. jesse kirsch, nbc news. the woman accused of sneaking onto a delta flight to paris was in brooklyn federal court yesterday. svetlana dali could face years in prison. she bypassed two security and ticketing check points before boarding the flight to paris. she was denied entry into france and returned to new york wednesday. she is expected back in court later later today. house representatives voted against releasing a report on matt gaetz on whether he engaged in illicit drug use and had sex with an underaged girl. it's unclear if the report will ever be made public.

gaetz enies the allegations, but the controversy quickly derailed his bid for attorney general. meanwhile, pete hegseth toiled away in the halls of congress yet again trying to win support for his nomination. here's garrett haake. >> reporter: new public hints of potential republican opposition to president-elect trump's pick for secretary of defense, pete hegseth. iowa's joni ernst saying she's not ready to support h him. >> i think for a number of our senators, they want to make sure that any allegations have been cleared and that's why we have to have a very thorough vettin process. >> reporter: other republicans noncommittal after their meetings with hegseth. >> i know we're having meetings. >> reporter: but hegseth telling us he's optimistic. mr. hegseth, do you feel like you're making progress in these meetings? >> great meetings. it's how the process works. it's not going to be tried out here. it's going to be discussed inside the offices, how we

rebuild our military, put the war fighters first. that's what president trump has asked me to do. >> reporter: are there any circumstances in which you would withdraw from this process? >> i'm here for donald trump, as long as he supports me, i'll be here. >> reporter: he's facing negative headlines, including a nbc news report that ten current and former fox news employees say he drank in ways that concerned him. and a sexual assault claim from 2017 which he denies. police investigated it, and he was not charged. it sounds like you're not fully determined whether you'll support this nominee. >> most nominees what you'll do, you'll have an open hearing. he went a long way in getting my full support, but i want him to be able to answer in front of everybody else, the questions that are there. i see no reason at this point to not be supportive of him. >> our thanks to garrett for that report. turning now to the deadly

arctic blast that is whipping across much of the u.s. millions are under winter alerts and blizzard warnings. erin mclaughlin is in hard-hit erie, pennsylvania. >> reporter: across the northeast and midwest, a fast-moving clipper system unleashing dangerous snowfall, powerful winds and freezing temperatures on millions. winds in excess of 50 miles per hour wreaking havoc on the roads, with whiteout conditions in many places. this truck flipped on its side. the deadly storm killed at least two people clearing snow in new york. and, in hard-hit erie, pennsylvania, the first blizzard warning in two years. that alert on top of the five feet of snow already on the ground. >> we're just running out of room to push snow. >> reporter: treacherous road conditions costing plans potentially life-saving time. >> i do most of the critical care before i even start moving.
