lighter for friday. back to you. all right mike, thanks. towns in northern california's humboldt county are addressing damage from several earthquakes yesterday, including that 7.0 that hit offshore and triggered that tsunami warning yesterday. now, the massive earthquake was centered off the coast near ferndale just before 11 a.m. several aftershocks also rattled towns. now that aftermath was immediate in red way, water sprayed from the ceiling sprinkler system. there, the lights and sprinklers of shop smart after losing the power, forcing the grocery store to close. i got here at 12 and it was just a mess. the floors were just really, really wet. we had about almost an inch of water in here and also look athis. this is the garberville smoke shop. smokers swept workers, i should say, there swept up those items scattered on the floor and then take a look at this just outside rio del blue slide road cracked

open that lane now is closed with cones. officials there say that there's not a lot of structural damage on buildings or homes, and there were no immediate reports of anyone hurt. w to the peninsula where many people who live in half moon bay are questioning why tsunami sirens never went off along the coast following those powerful earthquakes. cell phones across the bay area blared with that tsunami warning alert, but the sirens never went off, one woman says after she received the alert on her phone, police came around with a bullhorn, telling people to evacuate the san mateo county department of emergency management said it held off on pushing the button that would have triggered sirens along the coast.s every moment evolved, we basically had more information from the national weather service and the national tsunami warning center that basically said that the threat was decreasing significantly over time. i think it would have
5:05 am
been helpful to know that the threat was decreasing, like if it would have been a tsunami watch, that lack of alerts. coastal residents were frustrated with the gridlock traffic as they tried to drive inland to higher grod. county leaders say they have many takeaways from this experience and will be better prepared. moving forward. nbc bay area sent out push alerts just moments after that earthquake hit, and once again, when the tsunami warning was issued. feel free. please download our free nbc bay area news app to get those alerts sent straight to your phone. 504 for you right now and in a few hours, the man accused in the mass murder of his family will be back before a judge in oakland. today, in the bay's bart brendel joins us live right now. bob, do we know what we can expect in court today? it's not clear. good morning to you, marcus and kira. shane parrish, he's already pled not

guilty to the murder of his two young children. his wife, his mother and father in law. and he has waived his right to a speedy trial. this morning's appearance in alameda superior court in oakland is in a pretrial hearing. so again, it's not clear what specific issues might be addressed before the judge back in july, killian, who is 54 years old, allegedly shot and killed his family members at their home on alameda. his children were just one and six years old. this is a photo you might have seen already that we've obtained of killian at work as a boilermaker welder on a job at a refinery in martinez. that photo, taken hours before the murders took place. several of his coworkers at the time say that killian came to work. that morning, then left midday, saying he wasn't feeling well, colleagues said. one colleague said he noted that nothing felt off, but he did note that that was the third time in three months klian had walked off the job. also said killian was in general very sensitive, very sensitive person, that he was
5:07 am
ticked off easily when little things went wrong. he did mention some tension between his father in law and him, and so we knew about that, but that it wasn't anything that would have led to the actions that happened. as far as we knew. that was one of his coworkers who we spoke with months ago during a court hearing, according to a sheriff's records from north carolina. killian was charged with reckless driving and assault with a deadly weapon on a government official back in 2011. if he is convicted in these murders, killian faces more than 100 years in prison. reporting live. bob redell today in the bay. all right, bob, thank you. well, developing now, the nypd has now released new photos of a person of interest in a deadly shooting he's wanted for questioning in connection with the ambush and killing of the ceo of unitedhealthcare. the law enforcement source confirming to nbc news that images were captured at a hostel

judge in texas has rejected boeing's guilty plea stemming from those crashes of its max 737 airplanes. part of the deal involves the appointment of a government monitor at boeing to oversee its safety policies. the judge is worried that monitor will be appointed through. die. die is diversity, equity and inclusion and has fallen out of favor in some quarters. walmart and lowe's and some other companies have started to drop those programs, the texas judge told boeing that the government needed to renegotiate that deal. president elect trump has appointed silicon valley's david sacks as his ai and crypto czar. sacks, a longtime conservative, was one of the first silicon valley execs to support and raise money for trump. speaking of ai, meta says it needs so much power to run its ai computers. it needs someone to build nuclear power plants near its server farms in meta is not

alone. microsoft and google have warned they need more electricity in the future. how much? openai is looking for a five gigawatt power supply to run one of its artificial intelligence systems. a city like miami uses about five gigawatts of power, so that's a huge amount of electricity. and that's for just one proposed server farm. bloomberg reports openai wants to build more than a half dozen of them. kira. and where would those end up, scott? interesting. we know you'll follow along. thank you so much. we're going to turn now to a holiday tradition that continues tonight. nbc presents the 60th anniversary airing of rudolph the red-nosed reindeer tonight. that special event pushes tonight's holiday episode of happy's place to an unusual time of 9:15 p.m, but the wait will be worth it for the show's fans, who are also fans of reba mcentire's earlier sitcom reba. we've kept him here longer than we intended. we he should probably get back to his life.

our loss. yeah, i probably should, but i won't. one of the costars of that show, steve howey, makes a visit tonight to reba's new show, playing a businessman considering having his company's holiday party at the bar to be a part of that studio audience. the night that steve howey came on was so amazing because the audience lost their mind when they saw steve walk into the room with reba mcentire, and it just felt like we were. it felt like it felt like no time had passed. so who was he on reba? i'll have to google that again. happy's place airs tonight at a special time, 9:15 p.m. and then that's followed by a holiday episode of lopez versus lopez. well, you know, this is trending for you. this morning. i know you may be a little sad, kira, but after two years, nearly 150 shows and record breaking movie, it is finally the end of an era for one pop star. and i love you.

it's ruining my life, i love you, it's ruining my life. okay, not the end of her career, but just the end of this era. taylor swift will play her final show of her record breaking eras tour this weekend in vancouver. though she initially didn't have a stopover in canada. but prime minister justin trudeau actually took to twitter to try to convince the pop star to, hey, add a stop of theirs to her here in canada and to everyone's surprise, you know what she did? she added this stop. she's going to play tonight. and of course, no surprise here. those tickets are sold out. wow. is it just that easy? you just tweet her and say like, come to our country and then come to. nbc bay area for your final, final stop on your. exactly, exactly. and look, if she came here kari the weather would be amazing. so why not? yeah, we might need a cardigan or something, you know, to help us out a little bit. it's not like it's on east coast. chilly. and we're checking out christmas in the park in san jose. one of the
5:21 am
great places to enjoy the lights of the season. as we're getting started this morning, it is cool. we're in the upper 40s and headed for very close to 70 degrees today, so it's going to be very comfortable. we will have some low 70s again in the south county from gilroy to morgan hill. elsewhere we're staying in the 60s again today, with a high expected to go back to 68 degrees for oakland and 67 for antioch. no changes here. from the coast to the inland valleys. we're seeing a lot of 60s on the map, and 64 in the mission district for the north bay, santa rosa today will reach a high of 69 degrees. so let's enjoy once again all of the things going on. so we have the tunnels of joy. the christmas lights in brentwood, the neighbors getting together and just making it beautiful there. we're going to see temperatures in the mid 50s right at sunset and then quickly dropping down into the upper 40s. so make sure you're prepared for that. and then for the north bay we have the merry healdsburg, the tree
5:22 am
lighting celebration going on tonight that starts at 5:00. it will be in the upper 50s a few more clouds there, but we are looking nice and cool for the rest of the evening and it stays dry into the weekend. we see there will be a few storm systems coming very close by, but not seeing any rain chances until the end of next week, and potentially some bigger rain chances ahead as we get closer to christmas. so looking at our 7-day forecast, sunny skies and highs in the 60s, it will be cooler next week with our overnight lows in the mid 30s, and san francisco will see highs in the low 60s. mike, you're starting with a hit and run in fremont. yeah there's a crash here. northbound 680 right around auto mall. parkway. sounds like there are no injuries. and the vehicle that was hit, presumably the one who filed the report is also over on the right shoulder. the one who ran there looking for information. so if anybody you hear about something when you get to work, tell your friends to call chp and give them more information on that. a couple of

you know, when we think of who's at risk for lung cancer, men who have smoked their entire lives, top of that list. and while that's true, the list doesn't stop there. in fact, more and more women who have never smoked are being diagnosed, but often not early enough. in this morning's bay area. proud. our garvin thomas introduces us to a san francisco doctor who wants to change that. good morning everyone. there's a doctor in san francisco who has made it a mission of hers to increase early detection of lung cancer in women. doctor heba ismail at sutter health's california pacific medical center has made a specialty out of early intervention for lung cancer

cases. the problem is, for many women who have never smoked, their lung cancer is often misdiagnosed until it's too late. so doctor ismail is starting an initiative where when women go in for their regular breast cancer screening, they're asked questions about lung cancer risks and possibly send for more specific testing. doctor ismail thinks if their program shows promise, it could one day be a regular part of a woman's health care screening. you can experience the whole story at nbc bay area.com/bay area proud, as well as hundreds of other stories of people being good to each other in the bay area. yeah, we were just talking. we always think about christopher reeve's wife, dana. yeah. wow. it's incredible. good stories. always from garvin thomas 26 past the hour. right now. up next, top stories. we're following on this friday, including the show will go on the last minute deal that saved the nutcracker. the announcement from the sf ballet ahead of its opening night tonight. i'm kris sanchez in half moon bay, where

5:32 am
well. taking a look at what to expect today, it will be moderate. it may still look a little hazy out there, but we are going to have mostly clear sky. today we're starting out at 40 in livermore and 47 in san rafael. in san francisco it's 52, and as we take a look at what to expect today, more, well above normal highs in the upper 60s for many of the inland valleys. we'll talk about the weekend ahead coming up in a few minutes. karen marcus. all right. thanks, kari. we're going to stick with the weather and go to half moon bay first. there was relief yesterday when there was actually no tsunami. then a lot of questions about why the sirens didn't sound during the national weather service tsunami warning today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us now from half moon bay. okay. so kris, do we have any answers for that question? you know, that was the question that happened right away as we were covering this story yesterday, marcus and kyra, the answer from the san mateo county sheriff's office and the office of emergency services is that there was no
5:33 am
problem with the sirens. they just weren't triggered. they just weren't sounded when the national weather service did send that tsunami warning shortly after the 7.0 earthquake yesterday at 1045, people got alerts on their phone to evacuate coastal areas like half moon bay, where we are this morning, the county office of emergency services sent their own secondary emergency alert to phones as well, but did not trigger the sirens. then, in some neighborhoods, people say they heard police officers on bullhorns going through the neighborhood yelling at them to evacuate. still, the director of emergency services says that not sounding the sirens was not a mistake. but for some residents, it didn't feel right. there was a second alert later. so i mean, and still no sirens. so we're like, this is saying, right now everybody goes somewhere, but there's no sirens. but there's people, you know, cops running around with bullhorns in neighborhoods as every moment involved. we basically had more
5:34 am
information from the national weather service and the national tsunami warning center that basically said that the threat was decreasing significantly over time. people do want as much notice as possible in this community here because of this. if you've been here, then you know it is a narrow and slow route to get to higher ground or to get out of town. now, tsunami warning expired within about an hour, which doesn't sound like a lot of time, except when you are in an emergency situation like this one. yesterday, as we were talking about evacuation notices, we got some very, very quickly and then some were delayed. we got one evacuation notice right after the evacuation. the warning expired. so definitely a lot of communities are going to be having very similar conversations today in half moon bay. kris sanchez today in the bay. all right, chris, very confusing out there. chris. yeah, thanks for keeping track of that for us. and just so you

students that were hurt in a school shooting in butte county. butte county sheriff has identified the victims as five year old elias wolford, as well as six year old roman mendez. the two were kindergartners attending the feather river adventist school. this is where that shooting took place. officials added that the two are fighting for their lives. they have a very long road ahead of them in terms of recovery. it's very likely that they are going to have to have a number of surgeries as going forward. but the fact that they are currently still with us, i think is a miracle and something that we should all be very thankful for. now, the sheriff identified the shooter as 56 year old glenn linton. he is a person investigators say was unhoused and had a lengthy criminal history that includes an arrest in south san francisco last month for being in a stolen u-haul. he was released from jail about two weeks ago. the sheriff says that linton

live camera does show you slowing right back here, where we expect to see some slowing up at oakland road where there's a crash right now, three vehicles involved, no injuries reported, but this is clearly causing a quick slowdown. unexpectedly slow for north 101 north of 280 all the way up to oakland road itself. outside of that south bay slowing everything else looks pretty standard for this friday, which means a lighter traffic flow. there will be more traffic over toward chase center second night in a row against different opponents. tonight, as kari told you, the minnesota timberwolves will be there and so we'll watch for crowds outside of chase center and on the 280 extension. now during the day, 7:30 a.m. they're going to start with traffic control until 3 p.m. on highway 29 between calistoga and saint helena. there's a tree removal, not christmas trees. they're talking about landscaping. and that's good. before any of that rain comes in, it's not on the schedule yet. kerry's talked about that. we're looking over at highway 37, though right now. the typical morning slow down there and a little build at the bay bridge back to you. all right mike, thanks. 542 for you, this morning and five years after a devastating fire, the

dom cathedral is set to reopen in paris. this is after that devastating fire that ravaged the church back in april of 2019. an opening ceremony expected tomorrow, followed by the first mass on sunday. new financial filings show elon musk spent more than $250 million to help donald trump get elected. okay. scott mcgrew the most money spent by one donor in american history. yeah, and that was just the money spent by political action committees for trump that musk funded. you're not counting the money he contributed to down ballot efforts as well. according to the latest reports from the federal election committee. and that's something we got to remember as we watched the tesla ceo exercise. his power in washington. musk has told lawmakers he will fund primary fights to oust them if they don't go along with what trump and most likely by extension, what he wants to do. musk, joining vivek ramaswamy on the hill yesterday talking about

their new department of government efficiency, or doge. it's not really a government department, at least not yet. musk says doge aims to cut $2 trillion out of the government's budget, but remember, $2 trillion is more than the government's entire discretionary spending. meaning he would have to cut into defense or other social security programs to get to that number. everything is up for consideration. say lawmakers. they listened mainly, but basically they say they're going to tackle. nothing is sacrosanct. nothing. they're going to put everything on the table sacrosanct. musk and others have pointed to inefficiencies and fraud as a way to cut the budget. few americans oppose that. politicians have always promised to cut the budget through pursuing fraud and inefficiency. thomas jefferson was concerned about what he called the multiplication of public office and recommended using a pruning knife, but cutting
5:49 am
inefficiencies won't get you to 2 trillion. as for fraud, fraud is already illegal and already investigated by agencies like the fbi and the irs. two agencies republicans would like to make smaller. here's speaker johnson. we have long lamented the size and scope of the government that it has grown too large. and let me be frank about this. government is too big. it does too many things, and it does almost nothing. well. the house subcommittee, looking into what went wrong in butler, pennsylvania, where donald trump was nearly killed in his speech, wrapped up its investigation and testimony this week with quite the scene. a republican lawmaker from texas accused the interim director of the secret service of showing up at a nine over 11 memorial as a political stunt. director ronald rose said he was there to mourn a secret service agent killed in the attack. i actually responded to ground zero. i was there, going through the ashes of the world trade center. i was there at fresh kills. i'm not asking you that. i'm asking you, congressman,
5:50 am
were you the special agent in charge to show respect for a secret service member that died on nine over 11? you're trying to be. do not invoke nine over 11 for political purposes. oh, i hope not. i'm invoking this war, sir. gentlemen, you are out of line, gentlemen. to ask him a question, please. you are out of order. don't try to bully me. order! and finally, a few minutes ago, president elect trump once again put his support behind fox news anchor pete hegseth for secretary of defense, posting, quote, pete is a winner, and there's nothing that can be done to change that. kira much i want to ask you, scott, but. all right. thanks for now. 49 past the hour. happening today. the future is now for the bay area's newest professional basketball team, the golden state valkyries are a wnba expansion team that begins play in may of 2025 at chase center. tonight, the team holds its expansion draft, selecting from a pool of players left unprotected by the league's 12

other teams. the private event will be held at san francisco's museum of modern art, but it is airing on national tv. that draft gets underway at 330 this afternoon. well, the niners meanwhile, they may be down, but of course they are not out. in fact, a late season run likely would land them in the playoffs. now that means it all starts with sunday's game at vi's against the bears head coach kyle shanahan this week suggesting if the niners do make it to the postseason, the injured christian mccaffrey may be able to return. but first things first and don't forget fans. nbc sports bay area will have the pregame coverage starting at noon. 49ers post game live will also air immediately after the game on nbc sports knibb nbc. bay area sports plus. all right, one of the most beloved christmas songs ever is reaching a big milestone this year. can you guess which song i'm talking about? listen,
5:52 am
last christmas i gave you my heart. but the very next day you gave it away. this year to save me from tears i'll give it to someone special, special. last christmas by wham is celebrating its 40th anniversary this week and the song is hitting a new record. all these decades later by becoming one of the most streamed holiday tracks globally on spotify. that's pretty impressive. move over mariah with an impressive 8 million streams in a single day. one of the members of wham! andrew ridgeley, stopped by the tonight show with jimmy fallon, saying he always knew the hit george michael wrote was special. it was written to be a number one, george, you know, in 1984, we had a fantastic year. wake me up was number one in the uk, in the states,nd careless whisper was number one. and we had, you
5:53 am
know, it was jusa big, big year. and george wanted the cherry on the cake was a christmas song and it had to be a christmas number one, which it eventually was 39 years later. yeah. he never got a chance to see it be number one. no, that's a great shame. yeah he would. george, if you're if you can hear us somehow, you did it, buddy. you crushed it. oh, in honor of that milestone, a new special last christmas 40th anniversary ep will be dropping december 13th. and so. okay, this is the thing i was saying we ruined for all of our viewers because there's a viral trend called whamageddon. okay, it's a game played around the world, apparently that has people hoping they can make it all the way to christmas day without hearing that song ever. at a store, at a walgreens. that's not possible on your television, so you can't make it to december 25th now because we just ruined it. it's just like, i won't hear
5:54 am
white christmas, right? like you're gonna hear them all, you know? and you have no control over it. any story, unless you just stay at home in your room and you don't turn on anything and just keep your ears shut. but who wants to do that? it's such a great song. you don't want to get out and meteorologist kari hall, i won't put you on the spot. i love the song. i won't. it's a good one, i think. i can't tell, i can't read it. it plays in the rotation for you know, wrapping presents. you're one of the 8 million streams, i guess. so. all right, so we are having some beautiful weather for whatever you're planning. in fact, as we take a look all across the west, it is clear the storms are staying offshore. and we are going to see that continue for a while. it's being blocked by high pressure. so that's keeping it away. and we're enjoying sunshine. so take a look at pacifica today. starting out at 8:00 at 51 degrees and only headed for the low 60s for today. and it's going to be partly cloudy. we have upper 60s expected for a lot of the inland
5:55 am
valleys into the north bay. the tri-valley, the east bay down to the south bay. but there will be a few spots back in the low 70s today. we'll see that from los gatos down to gilroy. and then looking at tomorrow, it's a repeat of today, a repeat of what we've seen throughout the week. although a few of our inland temperatures may drop just a bit because of that lingering tule fog that we see in the central valley after getting those heavy rainfalls, at least for the fall, we start to see that fog settling into the central valley. and sometimes that makes it through the gaps in the bay area. so we are going to have those foggy mornings, but a lot of sunshine and mild afternoons enjoying all of the lights and sights and sounds of the season. you may also hear this christmas play later on tonight as you're walking through the tunnels of joy in brentwood. so we're going to be in the mid 50s and then dropping down to the upper 40s and enjoying the merry hildebrandt tree lighting celebration, a lot of tree lighting events going on this weekend. it's going to be chilly
5:56 am
here. temperatures dropping quickly into the low 50s, and more sunshine ahead with noo rain, at least for the next week. so here's your 7-day forecast with highs in the low 60s and a mostly sunny sky in the forecast each day. and mike, we continue with issues for the south bay commute. yeah, we didn't want to see this light show kari but this is north 101 jammed up unusually heavy, especially for a friday. there is that crash. we'rere tracking north 101 at oakland road. there may be a second crash in that same area, so at least the slow lane was blocked. minor injuries reported. that's the less bad news, but the backup really jamming up north 101 for about almost four miles now as you're approaching the two 8680 interchange.o if you can get over to 87 and maybe use capital expressway, we may see more traffic flowing there. that is your alternate. to get onto 101 past that scene, we're looking at the rest of the bay, though the rest of the bay is playing out for a typical friday flow. some minor crashes here and there. nothing major as far as
5:57 am
the impact on your speeds or your drive times. at the bay bridge, we are seeing a little volume increase. there is reports of something going on right at that 888 overcrossing interchange coming out of the maze. we're watching for any additional slowing. we don't really see a problem, but there it is, a disabled vehicle reported and a minor crash around hilltop drive should be off the roadway. but there are distraction. highway 37 shows a little slowing and highway 4 just barely any brake taps into concord. not a big deal. back to you. thanks, mike. well, happening now. any doubts about the a's somehow missing their target date for the new vegas ballpark? pretty much slipping away. that's because the stadium authority leaders yesterday finalizing the preliminary work and a special meeting. they approved all the remaining outstanding issues, including lease and development agreements. they did not announce a groundbreaking date, but that's still on track to happen before june of next year. the a's plan to start playing in vegas in 2028 ski season is in full swing right now. next on
