did not go off. right now, at six tsunami warning alerts blaring on cell phones across the bay area after a massive earthquake in northern california. but the sirens didn't go off along the coast. the community concerns now over the emergency response. plus, new images of the accused killer of a health care company. the new part of the investigation. the police are now focusing on after that deadly shooting. and a live look outside. oh that's beautiful. the bay looks like glass. it is friday and we are tracking your end of the week forecast. we're also checking in on your morning drive times this is today in the bay. well, if that just wasn't a great way to
6:02 am
start a friday morning, i don't know what is. thanks for joining us. i'm kira clapper in for laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. let's get a look at that forecast this morning. meteorologist kari hall is tracking what we can e expect. d not a bad start to the morning. not bad at all. it's in the low to mid 40s in some spots. we're at 44 in walnut creek and 45 in palo alto and san francisco. now checking in at 49 degrees. but then when we take a look at our highs, we're back to seeing some of the same temperatures we've had from the past few days in oakland. look for a high of 68 degrees and 68 in livermore, low 70s for the south county and for the north bay. it's going to be in the upper 60s. it may be just a touch cooler in some spots tomorrow, but still mostly sunny and a really nice weekend ahead. but mike, you're saying there is a slow drive now in san jose? yeah. if you're just joining us, this is a tough drive. about four miles of jam, unexpectedly slow, especially for a friday
6:03 am
through san jose. so as you're getting toward tully road, watch out for north 101. you're going to really jam down into the backup all the way up to oakland road. there's a crash involving three vehicles, no major injuries, but one lane is blocked and there are crews on scene. they're trying to clear the area again, unexpectedly slow for this section through san jose, you have an option to get over to 87 and join back up with 101 north by the airport off the guadalupe parkway. everything is fine just traveling north on the 101 area. the rest ofhe east bay, and the approach to the bay bridge. still looking pleasant. back to you. thanks, mike. towns to our north and humboldt county are assessing damage from several big earthquakes, including that 7.0 that hit offshore and triggered a tsunami warning across the bay area yesterday. now, the massive earthquake was centered off the coast. this is near ferndale just before 11:00 and several aftershocks rattled towns. now that aftermath was immediate and redway water sprayed from the ceiling
6:04 am
sprinkler system, the lights and sprinklers look everything in the shop. smart lost power there, forcing that grocery store to close. i got here at 12 and it was just a mess. the floors were just really, really wet. we had about almost an inch of water in here and over at the garberville smoke shop, workers there swept up those items, shattered on the floor and just outside rio del blue slide road, cracked open. look at that lane, now closed with cones. officials say that there was not a lot of apparent structural damage on buildings or homes, and there were no immediate reports of anyone being hurt. marcus. many people who live in half moon bay. a beautiful look for you, right now, but they are questioning why tsunami sirens never went off along their coast following those powerful earthquakes. cell phones across the bay area blared with that tsunami warning alert, but the local sirens never went off. one
6:05 am
woman says after she received that alert on her pho, police came around with a bullhorn, telling people individually to evacuate the san mateo county department of emergency management says it held off on pushing the button that would have triggered sirens along the coast. as every moment evolved, we basically had more information from the national weather service and the national tsunami warning center that basically said that the threat was decreasing significantly over time. i think it would have been helpful to know that the threat was decreasing, like if it would have been a tsunami watch. so beyond feelingng like they were left in the dark, coastal residents also say they were frustrated with the gridlock traffic as they tried to drive inland to higher ground. san mateo county leaders say they have many takeaways from this experience and will be better prepared moving forward. we sent out push alerts just moments after the earthquake hit
6:06 am
and again as that tsunami warning was issued and then canceled. you can be sure to download our free nbc bay area news app and get all those alerts sent right to you. 605 this morning and in a few hours, the man accused in the mass murder of his family will be back before a judge in oakland. today in the bay's bob redell joins us now. and, bob, is there any way to know what we can expect today? not yet. good morning to you, kara. and marcus. shane parrish colleen has already pled not guilty to killing his allegedly two young children, his wife and his father, and mother in law. he's also waived his right to a speedy trial. so this morning's appearance in oakland at the alameda county superior court for a pretrial hearing. it's not going to be clear what any significant issues might arise from that before the judge back in july, killian, who is 54 years d, allegedly shot and killed his family members at
6:07 am
their home on alameda. his children were just one and six years of age. this is a photo we obtained of killian at work as a boilermaker welder on a job at a refinery in martinez. that photo, taken hours before the murders took place. several coworkers at the time say killian came to work that morning, then left midday, saying he wasn't feeling well. one colleague said nothing felt off, but he did note that this was the third time in three months killian had walked off the job. he also said killian was in general, a very sensitive person, that he was easily ticked off when little things went wrong. he did mention some tension between his father in law and him, and so we knew about that. but that it wasn't anything that would have led to the actions that happened. as far as we knew. that was one, again, one of killian's coworkers a few months ago, after one of the previous court hearings, according to sheriff's
6:08 am
records from north carolina, killian was charged with reckless driving and assault with a deadly weapon on a government official back in 2011. if he is convicted in the murders of his family members, he faces more than 100 years in prison. reporting live bob redell today in the bay. all right, bob, thanks for that report. developing. now the nypd has now released new photos of a person of interest in a deadly shooting he's wanted for questiong, for connection with that ambush and killing of the ceo of unitedhealthcare. now, a law enforcement source confirming to nbc news that the images were captured there at a hostel on manhattan's upper west side. an eyewitness saying that that man in the photos shared a room with two others and checked out on wednesday. that's the same day police say that the ceo was gunned down as he was walking toward an investor conference. also, new video obtained by the new york times showing a person resembling that shooter walking not far from the
6:09 am
scene. ten minutes before the shooting. that person appearing to talk on the phone, knowing that the shooter was on the phone talking to somebody else, definitely changes the way the investigation goes. possibly someone knew the shooting was about to happen, or he was maybe calling someone for the last time, or it could be part of a larger plot. shell casings from the shooting are now key focal point in this investigation. a senior new york city law enforcement official briefed on the investigation, telling nbc that the three casings recovered from the scene had three words written on them. they were denied defend and oppose, which is a possible reference to a 2010 book critical of the insurance industry. just about nine past the hour now, we have continuing coverage of the trial of nima momeni. so far, no verdict from the jury in san francisco. day two of deliberations wrapped up yesterday. jurors will not be back today. they will return monday. mo zenni is accused of killing cash app co-founder bob lee in april of 2023. his
6:10 am
defense attorneys argue that mo money stabbed lee in self-defense when lee was high on drugs and attacked him. meanwhile, prosecutors dispute that claiming lee's dna was not on the knife handle, but mo was. several pro-palestinian protesters who shut down the golden gate bridge earlier this year. we'll be back in court today. back in april, they brought traffic to a standstill. while protesters were there protesting the war in gaza. a total of 26 demonstratators face charges. seven of them will appear before a judge on an arraignment hearing. during the hours-long standstill, commuters miss work, school flights and critical surgeries. the demonstrators are being charged with felony conspiracy in connection with the protest. we're going to turn now to a live look at diamond peak, which yesterday became pretty much the final large scale tahoe ski resort to open. today. they are holding their ski season kickoff party. unfortunately, it looks
6:11 am
good out there, but apparently there is no fresh snow on the immediate horizon, so perfect time now to check in with meteorologist kari hall. kari, are you able to see like, long term? maybe theoretically for people who might want to call out sick and head. you can still be on standby this weekend. speaking from personal experience or for a friend. yea. yeah. right. right, right. for a friend. for a friend. yeah, yeah, yeah. well, you'll have a good time getting there and enjoying the snow that they're making because they're at diamond peak. they're all the way up to 8500ft. so really, we don't need a whole lot coming from mother nature. and we don't have any in t the nearerm. it's going to be sunny and good traveling for getting to the sierra and back for the weekend. let's get a live look outside in san francisco as we're getting started this morning. it is another cool one with low 50s and it will make it into the low 60s here today with lots of
6:12 am
sunshine. we're making weekend plans to get outside, but first, mike, we may have to fill up. where can we find lower gas prices? well, let's tell kira's friend who she's asking for. they need to fill up getting her way through livermore toward i-5, maybe, or the sacramento. you can finish the week with livermore in the lead spot, as they have been all week. 319 at the marathon's, there's one on south livermore and there's one on home street. both have that same great price, the best in the bay, one of the best in the state for the best in solano county. we'll head to the club called sam's club at vacaville. got 363 a gallon there. it's on helen power drive, and we'll finish with the south bay's best in sunnyvale. 369 at national petroleum on old san francisco road. wherever you're going in town, or maybe not in town, we're going to go to gasbuddy.com. they'll help you find the best deal on the roadways. pretty good deal, except for the south bay. north 101 continues to be really jammed up traveling through san jose. as you approach tully, you're going to start tapping those brakes and then really hit
6:13 am
those brakes at 280 up to oakland road, one lane blocked. 3rd may 2 or 3 vehicles need to be cleared. and that is the big jam. 87 should see more traffic. it will get you past that slowdown. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. good job on those prices of gas, mike. but i heard kira's friend has an electric car. yeah. all right, just saying. i will be here tomorrow morning, tune in at seven. it's 612 for you right now. reversing its policy coming up here on today in the bay. we're going to tell you the reason one of the country's largest health insurers is backpedaling on its plan to limit anesthesia coverage. and just into our newsroom, the latest jobs report. and it is more good news out to the futures this morning. we've set several records on the stock market this week. and scott, it's time to don your best ugly sweater this weekend sweater fest. you can attend and show off your your threads. you're watching today in the bay.

(♪♪) start this morning as we take a look at our live camera in palo alto. looking at highway 101 now, we're in the mid 40s right now and it stays that way through 8:00. but all of this sunshine is going to make it feel nicer. even though our temperatures stay in the 60s. for today, we'll get a look at what's ahead in our weekend forecast coming up. well, your
6:17 am
shot of highway 101 looks great. look in san jose. it is jammed up for about four miles. we have traffic crawling past the scene of a crash 101 at oakland road in the northbound commute direction. we'll follow any progress there, and we'll talk about the rest of your drive coming up. well, good morning. very happy friday to you. san francisco's wells fargo denying talk. it's thinking about moving its headquarters out of san francisco to texas. anthem blue cross that's run by a company called elevation changing its anesthesia policy. you probably saw this on the internet. anthem said it would stop paying for your anesthesia if your surgery goes wrong. this new policy would have taken effect in three states, not here. that announcement, coming at the worst possible time. anthem blue cross said people misunderstood it, so they're not going to enforce that new policy. big numbers just in from the jobs report, more than 227,000 jobs added to the american economy. that's enormous. bigger than expected. unemployment rate
6:18 am
4.2%. now, some of this could be a hiccup in the last months report. the october jobs report, you may remember, was depressed by two hurricanes and some really big strikes. so last month we saw kind of garbage numbers. this report may be artificially inflated for the same reason. but you know, all in all, good news. other news. a federal judge in texas has rejected boeing's guilty plea stemming from the crashes of its 737 max airplanes. part of the deal involves the appointment of a government monitor to boeing to oversee safety policies. the judge is worried that monitor will be appointed through die. that's diversity, equity and inclusion, which has fallen out of favor in some quarters. walmart and lowe's and other companies have started to drop these programs. the texas judge told boeing and the government to renegotiate the deal. president elect trump has appointed this man, silicon valley's david sacks, as his ai

and crypto czar. sacks, a longtime conservative, was one of the first silicon valley execs to support and raise money for trump. speaking of ai, meta says it needs so much power to run its ai computers. it needs someone to build a nuclear power plant near its server farms. meta. not alone, microsoft, google have warned they'll need far more electricity in the future. how much electricity will? openai is looking for a five gigawatt power supply to run one of its artificial intelligence systems. this is miami. it uses about five gigawatts of power. that is a huge amount of electricity and kira. that's for just one proposed server farm. bloomberg reports openai wants to build a half dozen of them, and don't want to put you on the spot, but where are these going to go? well, next to the server farm somehow. oh my goodness. all right scott, thanks so much. we're g going to rn now to. did you know that this time of year

uber gives rides in a different way for the holiday season? the ride hailing service delivers christmas trees, even a group of carolers to your front door. uber has offered limited christmas tree delivery service off and on since 2015. it's being expanded nationwide this year through uber eats. the carolers will only be available to customers in new york city, los angeles, miami and d.c. starting tomorrow. no bay area. they'll also bring a boozy gift in partnership with drinks maker diageo. well, bart holiday sweaters are becoming so popular there's now an entire festival to celebrate them. so tomorrow in oakland, you can now show off your own bart ugly holiday sweater. that event is called sweater fest, and it's happening from 1 to 4 p.m. over at the rock ridge station. and this is from the pictures you're looking at. these are from last year's event. all those sweaters. okay,
6:21 am
so bart recentntly unveiled this year's ugly sweater. it's the fourth year of offering them. these are available for purchase at the event, along with live music and transit themed crafts. and if you just can't wait until the weekend festival, you can buy one of those hollywood holiday sweaters right now over at rail goods dot com. i did go on there to see. they can't fulfill the two x the medium, and i think three x. but you can get the small large and extra large and you could get i think you'd look good in one of those vests. no. are you looking at the cart? i'm just. oh my gosh.. ohy gosh. okay i'm psychic. i'm sorry. kari. you have an ugly. it's your turn. but he has a vest in his shopping cart. kari. i got to be prepared. well, you should get the small, you know. now, that would be a that would be so much more than ugly. kari. he's busting out of it. you can wear it to christmas
6:22 am
in the park. that's where you have the lights on all these muscles. crop top. all right. we'll give you time to work on those muscles. today, with all of this sunshine, we have great weather for getting out, exercising, checking out the lights or decorating. we are going to see some warm temperatures for the middle of the day. we're in the low 70s for a high today in gilroy, mostly upper 60s. elsewhere it will be 68 degrees in livermore and 67 in fremont and 68 today in oakland and mid 60s for half moon bay in palo alto, 69 degrees there and 64 in the mission district for the north bay, 65 in mill valley. pretty even temperatures where most of us will be in the 60s. once again, we have christmasas in te park, the drive through at history park in san jose. it starts at 5:00, so if you've got the tickets you're going to be riding through, i know it really doesn't matter what the temperatures are like because you're in your vehicle, but it's going to be nice. just crank up
6:23 am
the heat a little bit and then we'll have some very comfortable weather for the 49ers game on sunday. it will be in the upper 60s and we're going to continue on with sunshine. looking ahead into next week, it is still dry all the way up towards the end of next week, and then maybe a more active storm pattern after that. but at least in our 7-day forecast, we continue with dry conditions and above normal temperatures. mike san jose still has the big delay this morning. this is the tough drive friday. we really don't expect this on 101. this stretch from basically two 8680 up to oakland road where there is a crash, two vehicles involved. we still need two tow trucks to arrive on scene. they were called about 25 minutes ago and the jam on 101 starting to build now. before you get to tully road. i haven't seen a major shift, but 87 is a good option to take you past the scene. lighter traffic overall does keep everything else moving smoothly. getting over toward the bay bridge, the metering lights are on and we're finally starting to see that backup. back to you. oh, wow. yeah. big backup there. thanks, mike. we
6:24 am
have a really nice story coming up. one of the south bay's most popular holiday attractions is making some changes this weekend. next on today in the bay is an inclusive event, making it possible for everyone to enjoy christmas in the park. much more ahead. you're watching today in the bay.

6:27 am
lit up for christmas in the park. and this weekend, organizers there they are, making sure that everyone can get in on all that fun by announcing the parks accessible sunday celebration. yeah, it's a day that's been designed specifically for those who need extra assistance or more personal space. on sunday, visitors will find a sensory santa who understands some may need a quiet area or people who don't like to be touched. some exhibits will have fencing removed to help those who are visually impaired experience the splays with their hands. deaf children can visit wishing wells that vibrate with the drop of a coin. this new event was made possible through a generous donation, in part from tj rogers. we spoke with him. he is proud of making this event accessible. we've also got services there so they can counsel. you know you know this is available tt's available. so it's a couple of four hours actually on sunday. and it's

the communities rattled after a powerful 7.0 earthquake prompts a tsunami warning. but the concerns after the coastal community alert system fails to go off. plus, only on nbc bay area masked thieves target a group of teenagers in the east bay. the reason the victims say they're more upset with the police department and lighting up san francisco. let's glow. s.f. is back tonight. what you can expect to see if you're in the city tonight. this is today in the bay. and a good morning to you on this friday. i'm
6:32 am
marcus washington. and i'm kira klapper in for laura garcia. so much going on tonight, especially in the city. like you just mentioned, meteorologist kari hall has a look at our forecast. looking so pretty in blue. i forgot to call you out from head to toe. literally. oh, thanks. yeah, we are just trying to get in the holiday spirit and also just trying to stay warm, too. we are going to have some cool temperatures looking at just a little bit of fog rolling over san francisco. while it is all clear overhead. we're going to have another beautiful sunrise heading into a mild and dry weekend and slightly cooler early next week, with rain possible next weekend, so it's going to be a while as we get a look at fremont and what to expect. it's in the mid 40s and warming up into the upper 60s today. all of these numbers are above normal and we'll see that into the weekend. mike, do you have better news in san jose? we do. traffic is moving better no. highway one on one. look at that beautiful view. sun's up. thumbs up. look at that. thumbs up for
6:33 am
the clearing north. 101 at oakland road. we should have some pretty good recovery because of a lighter volume of traffic, but still, you are slowing at tully road. clearing by oakland road again. that crash cleared. we do have a truck fire reported, but no injuries. they're working on a tractor trailer westbound 580 just off of 205. that's going to slow folks dow so it's making continued slowing. the continued slower build thrhrough livmore for westbound 580. but we do have the backup at the bay bridge. took a while to form but it's there now. back to you. it sure is. all right, mike, thanks. well, we continue to follow that breaking news we brought to you yesterday morning the earthquakes and the tsunami warning. and in half moon bay, there was relief that there was no tsunami after all. but then a lot of questions came about why the sirens didn't actually sound during the national weather service's tsunami warning today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us from half moon bay this morning. so, kris, do we have any answers from that question? you know, we've been asking this question since the
6:34 am
tsunami warning happened in about an hour after when it was canceled and the sheriff, christina corpus, here in san mateo county, along with the emergency services director, say they there was no problem with the sirens. they just weren't acvated. so that is the word this morning. now, when the national weather service did issue that tsunami warning shortly after the 7.0 earthquake yesterday, people got alerts on their phones to evacuate coastal areas like half moon bay, the county office of emergency services also sent an additional emergency alert to phones and did not trigger the sirens. but in some neighborhoods, they did send police officers. people there tell us they heard police officers on bullhorns, telling them to evacuate. the director of emergency services says not sounding the sirens wasn't a mistake. it was a choice. but some residents say it just didn't feel right. there was a second alert later. so i mean, and still no sirens. so we're like, this is saying right now
6:35 am
everybody goes somewhere but there's no sirens. but there's people, you know, cops running around with bullhorns in neighborhoods as every moment involved. we basically had more information from the national weather service and the national tsunami warning center that basically said that the threat was decreasing significantly over time. but people want as much notice as possible because of this. in this community, if you live here or you come here, you know that the roads to get out are very narrow and very slow. some people actually walked to higher ground because of the gridlock. so the warning expired within about an hour's time, which is a long time when you're talking about a potential emergency. other communities did issue evacuation orders that were timed differently. we saw west berkeley really quickly. fremont, though, we got their evacuation order after the tsunami warning expired. so a lot of communities are going to
6:36 am
be talking about what they did and what they might do better next time. in half moon bay, kris sanchez today in the bay. yeah, almost thankful nothing bad happened. and then they can use that as a learning experience. kris, thanks so much. well, don't you forget we are always tracking any shaking that happens. i want you to bookmark this website nbc bay area.com/quake tracker. that way you're going to see the listings of all the shaking in the bay area. and you can also find out the resources like what you should pack in that go bag. 35 past the hour right now. and the man who went on a deadly shooting rampage at a sunnyvale tech company 36 years ago is expected to have his death sentence reduced to life in prison today. back in 1988, richard farley killed seven former coworkers at esl incorporated shortly after he was fired from the company. investigators determined he was stalking a woman there and was furious. after she served him with a restraining order. santa clara county district attorney

jeff rosen has been in the process of reducing the sentences of more than a dozen death row inmates, from death to life, with no chance of parole. today, a vigil will be held for the two students that were hurt in that school shooting in butte county. butte county sheriff is identifying the victims as five year old elias wolford and six year old roman mendez. the two were kindergartners attending feather river adventist school. this is where that shooting took place. officials adding that the two are fighting for their lives. they have a very long road ahead of them in terms o recovery. it's very likely that they are going to have to have a number of surgeries as going forward. but the fact that they are currently still with us, i think is a miracle and something that we should all be very thankful for. the sheriff identifying the shooter as 56 year old glenn linton. investigators say that he was unhoused and had a lengthy criminal history that includes

6:39 am
call me when they're on their way here. our nbc bay area crew at the scene was in touch with oakland police. the department told us, because no one was hurt. that call wasn't a high priority. so the girls were told they could stay there to wait for an officer or file a report online. after several hours of waiting for police to show up, the girls left. well, san francisco ballet's nutcracker season will kick off as planned. this is despite concerns that opening night will be canceled due to a stall in contract negotiations. the ballet's dancers and stage managers have negotiated with the company for months and threatened to strike. they've been fighting for better wages, limitations on unpaid student labor and protections on overtime. the sf ballet said that it had come to a tentative agreement with the dancers and stage managers. the ballet company's executive director releasing a statement saying in part i am delighted to say that we achieved this tentative agreement with mutual respect and dedication to reaching a

and in healdsburg we have the mary healdsburg tree lighting celebration. we have a lot of tree lighting events going on around the bay area, and it's going to be one where you do have to bundle up, but staying warm with some hot chocolate most likely. here's a look at some really cold temperatures at palisades tahoe. we are enjoying the view of the snow with a clear sky overhead, and that's what you'll see throughout the weekend. mike, you're tracking the recovery after a crash. yeah, fewer headlights here at northbound 101 as the sun comes up. we have recovery for the speeds. all lanes cleared. we've had just a few minutes, but lighter traffic on friday means we can have a quicker recovery. that's good for the south bay. and we look at the rest of the bay. lighter volume of traffic again shows up a little slowing for the nimitz, down through hayward and in toward union city. looking ahead, we'll see more traffic into the city. of course, we have the backup at the toll plaza, but we're also talking about warriors. so chase center will have a crowd around there. and the 280 extension. keep that in mind. through the city and in the north bay. much

farther north, we're looking at the area between saint helena and calistoga. highway 29. we'll haveve some tr removal work from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. there will be traffic control, so watch those crews. scott. all right. mike, lots more still to come on this friday morning, including elon musk in washington ready to cut the budget. plus calling all dolly parton fans to make a living. there you go. calling all dolly parton fans who can sing this once in a lifetime chance to become the queen of country in her new musical. how you can be a part of it next. and before we go to break another edition of our school shoutout series. hi, we're from vargas lomita elementary in the beautiful city of oakland. good morning to. hey, good morning kids. that was a cool one, right? all right. yeah. don't forget, you can be a part of

6:47 am
take a live look outside in the east bay. we're checking out walnut creek. it's a clear start and we have lots of sunshine today, so we're going from mid 40s to mid 60s for this afternoon. enjoy another nice and dry day. we'll talk about farther down the line. rain chances coming up in a few minutes. good sunrise. good recovery because of a lighter friday volume of traffic on the roads. 101 is able to get back to what we'd expect as far as the drive through san jose. we'll show you where there are other slowdowns, other backups coming up. all right, mike and kerry. thanks. new financial filings show elon musk spent more than $250 million to help get donald trump elected, and scott mcgrew the most money spent by one donor in american history. that's right. and that was just the money spent on the political action committees for trump. you're not counting the money he contributed down ballot as well. according to the latest reports from the federal elections commission. something to remember as we watch the tesla ceo exercising his new

power in washington. musk has told lawmakers he will fund primary fights to oust them if they don't go along with what trump and most likely by extension, what he wants them to do. musk, joining vivek ramaswamy on the hill yesterday talking about their new department of government efficiency, or doge, not really a government department, at least not yet. musk says doge aims to cut $2 trillion out of the government budget, but $2 trillion is more than the government's entire discretionary spending, meaning he would have to cut into defense or social security or other programs to get that number. everything is up for consideration. say lawmakers. they listen mainly, but basically they say they're going to tackle. nothing is sacrosanct. nothing. they're going to put everything on the table. nothing is sacrosanct. musk and others have pointed to inefficiencies and fraud as a way to cut the budget. few
6:49 am
americans oppose that. politicians have always promised to cut the budget through pursuing fraud and inefficiency. thomas jefferson was concerned by what he called the multiplication of public office, and recommended using a pruning knife, but cutting inefficiencies don't get you to 2 trillion. as for fraud, that's already illegal and already investigated by agencies like the fbi and the irs, which are two agencies republicans would like to make smaller. here's speaker johnson. we have long lamented the size and scope of the government that it has grown too large. and let me be frank about this. government is too big. it does too many things, and it does almost nothing. well. the house subcommittee, looking into what went wrong in butler, pennsylvania, where donald trump was nearly killed during a speech, wrapped up its investigation and testimony this week with quite the scene. a republican lawmaker from texas accused this man, the interim director of the secret service, of showing up to a nine over 11 memorial as a political stunt.
6:50 am
director ronald rose said he was there to mourn a secret service agent killed in the attack. i actually responded to ground zero. i was there, going through the ashes of the world trade center. i was there at fresh kills. i'm not asking you that. i'm asking you, congressman, were you the special agent in charge to show respect for a secret service member who died on nine over 11? y you're trng to be. do not invoke nine over 11 for political purposes. oh. i'm not. i'm invoking this war, sir. gentlemen, you are out of time. gentlemen, to ask him a question, please. you are out of order. don't try to bully me. order! and finally, a few minutes ago, president elect trump once again put his support behind fox news anchor pete hegseth for secretary of defense, posting, quote, pete's a winner, and there's nothing that can be done to change that. jd vance just chimed in a few minutes ago, saying far too long. the pentagon was led by soldiers who lose wars. j.d. vance's words. marcus. all right. thanks, scott. okay, so

the niners, they may be down, but they are certainly not out. in fact, a late season run likely would land them in the playoffs. that means it all starts with sunday's game at levi's against the bears head coach kyle shanahan. this week, suggesting if the niners do make it to the postseason, the injured christian mccaffrey may be able to return. but first things first, and don't forget fans. nbc sports bay area will have pregame coverage for you starting at noon and 49ers. postgame live will air immediately after the game on nbc. bay area sports plus. okay. for anyone who is a singer, you think you can sing? never thought that you would hear these words, but training for you this morning. the queen of country needs your help. yes. your help. country icon dolly parton is announcing an open casting call for dolly, an original musical. whether you're chasing your dreams from a small town or you've spent years performing on stages across the

6:53 am
stronger than others, but it's going to be very active because the ground just moved. it's going to continue moving. it's not just going to suddenly settle. so looking at the weather systems that are out there as well, all being blocked by high pressure. so we're still going to enjoy the sunshine and the storm track going farther to the north. no rain headed our way for the weekend, but take a look at the fog rolling right over san francisco right now. we will continue with dry weather for the weekend and just a little bit cooler early next week, but we will be watching farther into next week for the possibility of some rain. right now we're in the upper 30s and low 40s as you're heading out, and we'll see highs in the upper 60s once again with this weather repeating throughout the weekend, a few low 70s in the south county going out to the game tonight. it's going to be in the mid 50s for the warriors game at the chase center. a nice cool evening and throughout the weekend the cool weather continues mainly in the evenings. whether you're going to a basketball game, a football game or enjoying the lights or

getting an early start on that shopping. mike, you were checking in on the friday commute. yeah, and fridays we typically see a lighter volume of traffic. but look, we haven't even filled in to the end of the parking lot. from now through the end of the year, we've only got less than three weeks. and so we should see continuing lighter traffic for fridays and for mondays, compressing to tuesday through thursday for the bigger commutes for the morning. right now we see a typical pattern, but again, a lighter friday. so we had some slowing in walnut creek. it's teetering right on the on the speed limit there. the south bay is starting to build northbound routes. back to you. all right mike, thanks. 53 past the hour. happening now. if anyone was worried about the a's somehow missing their target date for a new vegas ballpark, not to worry. the stadium authority leaders yesterday finalized their preliminary work in a special meeting. they approved all the remaining outstanding issues, including lease and development agreement. they did not announce a groundbreaking date, but that's still on track to happen before june of next year. the a's plan to start playing in vegas in 2028, and we'll be back with a

six years old. colleen has already pleaded not guilty and waived his right to a speedy trial. this morning's appearance in alameda superior court is for a pretrial hearing. seven people facing felony charges are scheduled to be arraigned today in connection with that april protest that shut down the golden gate bridge. a group of palestinian supporters protesting the war in gaza brought bridge traffic to a standstill for hours. another 19 defendants are facing misdemeanor charges. well, cities and towns in humboldt county are now assessing the damage from that 7.0 quake and numerous aftershocks. still shaking that same area this morning. yesterday's initial quake triggered a brief tsunami warning here in the bay area, and it also centered off the coast near ferndale. and in some cases, roads have been have been repaired or need to be repaired. there also some homes and businesses are dealing with major cleanup, including the

smoke shop in garberville. now authorities do say that it appears to be little structural damage to buildings and homes. so far, there are no reports of injuries. before we go, kari has one last look at the forecast. yeah, we have a lot of sunshine for the weekend. it's going to be a nice one. just warming up during the afternoon and cooling down quickly at night. we'll see our overnight lows in the low 40s for the inland areas and in the south bay. the northbound routes for this friday commute have finally kicked in, but an added problem. we do have a crash in mountain view in the middleanes for north 101. all right, mike and kari, thanks so much. and that's what's happening here on today in the bay. today's show coming up next. we hope you have a great weekend. and we'd love to see you right back here on monday. good friday morning. th
