this weekend after that devastating fire nearly destroyed the iconic landmark. craig is there for us. we begin this morning with new clues in the ongoing manhunt for the gunman who shot and killed the ceo of unitedcare on a midtown manhattan sidewalk. police releasing these images showing a man now wanted for questioning. >> there are also new details on the gunman's calculated plan. three senior law enforcement officials familiar with the case telling nbc news the shooter may have traveled by bus from atlanta to new york last month. officials now working to see if they can find a name on a ticket that was purchased that would have been on november 24th, a greyhound trip that may help identify the shooter. >> sam brock joins us with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: savannah, that's right. a different day and now a different timeline with authorities now believing the suspect arrived in new york city ten days before the murder took

place here in midtown manhattan. that is ten days potentially of staging and planning with an eyewitness confirming that he shared a room at one point with total strangers. police combing cameras all over manhattan trying to build a fuller picture of what happened as the manhunt now enters its third day. this morning, new camera angles and critical images are emerging that appear to show the suspected gunman sought by an army of law enforcement for the murder of united health care ceo brian thompson. the suspect arrived in new york ten days before the murder. police are investigating whether he paid cash and used a fake id to rent a room at an upper west side hostel, according to law enforcement officials. authorities say these clear photos aref a person of interest taken at the hospital where the man had a flirtatious interaction with a woman working at the desk, according to a law enforcement official.

there's also a wave of new videos tracking the man who may be the suspect around new york city. from this shot, someone with that distinctive gray back park to this person bending over near a pile of trash near the shooting. and this video taken right before 7:00 a.m. that shows a man 30 blocks north of the murder scene biking near central park, this time with no backpack. >> we believe we're going to apprehend this person. >> reporter: those images showing the person of interest's face could also use facial recognition technology to id him. at the hostel where they were taken, witnesses in shock, one saying she shared a room with two rangers. >> makes you second guess who you're staying in the hostel with. >> reporter: a senior new york city law enforcement official saying the superintendent bought two protein bars and a water bottle from a nearby starbucks

and authorities were able to collect the items which could contain vital clues. >> it could be a fingerprint or dna that they could trace. >> reporter: the around the clock manhunt continuing to find an elusive killer responsible for one of the most shocking murders in recent new york memory. >> sam, in the wake of this shooting, it appears other health care companies are taking action to have more security around their staff. >> reporter: that's exactly right. several health care companies have taken steps to protect their top-level employees, either by removing photos or changing names on their websites. cbs health this morning confirming they did take photos off of the site. we're still waiting to hear back from anthem blue cross blue shield. ceos and high-level execs are reaching out now for more protection.

another major story this morning, new aftershocks in california after a large offshore earthquake rattled that region, the tremors felt as far away as san francisco, causing damage and placing millions under a brief tsunami warning. liz kreutz has that story. good morning. >> reporter: hey, hoda. good morning to you. definitelyn unsettling day for people in california. people here in humboldt, california, are thankful it wasn't worse. the owner of this store in downtown ferndale says in ten seconds this quake did thousands of damage to his business with bottles and food and other items falling off the shelves. the cleanup is under way after a 7.0 earthquake jolted northern california just before 11:00 thursday morning prompting a tsunami warning from california's bay area to southern oregon.

>> it's just like a warning, but it's still scary. >> reporter: cities including berkeley, half moon bay and crescent city issuing immediate evacuation orders. this man heading to high ground from his home in stinson beach. >> the probably is low, but i have no reason to take a risk of dealing with a big tsunami. >> reporter: within a few hours the warnings lifted, but experts say it was a necessary precaution. >> the fault is moving the sea floor. if it moves vertically, it can generate a tsunami. >> reporter: the quake's motion turned out to be mostly horizontal. those closest to the epicenter in humboldt county had some cleaning up to do, with bottles and items flying off shelves at this grocery store and at this historic hotel a door shaken off its hinges and making waves in this swimming pool.

let us turn to that brutal winter weather we've been tracking, sweeping across the country unleashing a new round of snow from the midwest to the northeast, temperatures plunging even lower, with some places said to experience the coldest day of the season so far. al has our full forecast, but first, erin mclaughlin joins us. she's in erie, pennsylvania. good morning. >> reporter: hey, hoda. good morning. right now there's a lull in the snow, but there's another clipper system plus more lake-effect snow on the way. as you can see, there's already an incredible amount of snow on the ground, so much snow officials say they're running out of places to push it. this morning, folks in erie, pennsylvania, are dealing with a fresh blast of blizzard-like weather, adding to the five feet of snow that has fallen in the last week. whiteout conditions and gusty winds across the great lakes, stopping people literally in

their tracks. at lake erie, waves as high as 15 feet slamming against the base of bicentennial tower. overnight, up to a foot of fresh lake-effect snow is expected to fall across new york state and parts of new england. officials urging caution after at least two died while clearing snow in new york. even more widespread, the threat of intense wind gusts and frigid cold with some 35 million americans under high wind alerts overnight and temperatures along the east coast plunging as much as 20 degrees below normal, the winds so strong it caused this truck to fold in half. >> it's been a crazy week or so. >> reporter: the onslaught of winter weather so intense even some first responders needed help. a fire house converted into afternoon emergency warming center had to be evacuated after the roof buckled under the

especially in places not used to it from lake charles, louisiana, ocala. look at these temperatures. air temperature 24 in atlanta. it feels like 15. little rock, 24, feels like 16. tallahassee, the windchill at 36 right now. so to the west of the jet stream where it's up to the north, you can see temperatures way above average, double nickels from rapid city, denver, amarillo. temperatures way below normal for boston, d.c., birmingham all the way down to tallahassee today. tomorrow you'll see that warm wedge of air starting to make its way east. in the meantime, temperatures still way below average. then they will start to warm up as erin mentioned. here comes that next clipper that's going to bring a reenforcement of cold air and probably some more lake-effect snow. we have lake-effect snow warnings for ohio, pennsylvania, new york, winter storm warnings right near os wee go. we're talking another foot of

get our top stories. i'm bob redell. later this morning, the man accused in the mass murder of his family in alameda will be back before a judge in oakland in july. shane parrish killian allegedly shot and killed his wife, mother and father in law, and two children at their home in alameda. his children were just one and six years old. killian has already pled not guilty and waived his right to a speedy trial. this morning's appearance in alameda county superior court is for a pretrial hearing. not clear what specific issues might be addressed this morning before the judge. seven defendants facing felony charges are scheduled to be arraigned today in connection with the protests that shut down the golden gate bridge back in april. a group of palestinian supporters were protesting the war in gaza, bringing the bridge traffic to a standstill for hours. another 19 defendants are facing misdemeanor charges. write for our friday forecast.

motivated a fan to open fire at a religious elementary school, seriously jinjuring two little kids. morgan chesky joins us with more. >> police are sharing the identities of the 5 and 6-year-old boys shot on that school's playground. they remain in critical, but stable condition this morning. this as police reveal more about the gunman's motive with new surveillance video showing him seconds before this rampage. this morning, new details emerging about the shooting of two kindergarten students in northern california and what may have motivated the gunman. police say the children were shot on the school's playground. 5-year-old elias hit in the abdomen on his schoolmate, 6-year-old roman sustained two gunshot wounds. >> they are going to have to have a number of sgeries goioing forward the fact that they are currently still with us i think is a miracle.

♪ we're back with today's food loves football. there's another great game on nbc sunday night. it's the l.a. chargers taking on the kansas city chiefs. that's going to be a good one. in honor of it, we're going to show you how to create delicious game day snacks. how are things at the restaurant? >> they're going great. we're getting ready for ski season. >> you've got a couple of great meals. we're going to start with the short ribs? >> yeah. we've got short rib tacos. >> do you have anything like this? >> we have some braised short ribs done in this fashion.

>> we have our pajama eaters over there. >> so good. >> we're going to add scallions and chopped carrots, a little bit of ginger, garlic, sugar, oil. we have the blanched short ribs here. itit's reallimportant to blanch these, so it brings out a little of the impurities. this we'll cover for about 2 1/2 hours. >> what's the heat? >> 350, 300. it really depends on how tender you want it. we'll finish with a little bit of soy sauce. right here we have a little bit of shaved brussel sprouts. you want to shave them fairly thin. we're going to add a little k ki kimchi, a little carrot, scallion, dressing, sois and a little bit of sugar and oil. it's important to let this marinate. >> this is the topping on the taco? >> yeah, the finished taco. let this marinate for about 15.
