remember shaping and just the smell and wanting to pop one of those things in my mouth. it was a wonderful family tradition and something i look forward to every year. now the temple estimates people there pound more than one ton of rice into mochi each and every december. mike inouye is a member of the temple there, and he was at the event as well. yeah, they have video proof that i did work here. instead of just walking around and talking to people and stuff like that. did you make a lot? we made over 1,500 pounds again this year, so we do that every year. most of it sold presold. there's a few pounds left over that we can still sell there, but there are other temple organizations. it's that japanese tradition. and my friend rena was the daughter of the minister who was, when i grew up there, and generations of families are there. so we spoke to three and four generations of families. that's lovely. it's great. we love that tradition. and we'll have some more chu. yeah, that's a preorder next year. there. get on the list. trying to drum up

some sales guys. how's it looking out there this morning? it looks nice. it's cold. and once again, and we've seen some even colder temperatures compared to the past few days. take a look at where we are right now for your microclimate. we are just 1 degrees above freezing in napa right now, and it is 50 in san francisco. really just depends on where you are, because we're in pleasanton at 51 and it's 39 in fremont. so already a wide range in temperatures. but we'll close that gap today as most of us make it into the low to mid 60s for this afternoon, even upper 60s for gilroy today and 63 in cupertino, lilly king, for the east bay. with our high temperatures today up to 60 in livermore, kind of the influence of that central valley fog keeping temperatures cooler there while in oakland, we'll see a high of 64. today it will be in the mid 60s for much of the peninsula with palo alto 64, also 64, in downtown san francisco, and for the north bay some mid 60s. now we are all

clear. still with the storm systems remaining well offshore. but then we'll start to see our weather pattern changing by the end of the week. starting on thursday, we could see some rain coming in and more weather systems one by one coming in for the weekend, as well as next week. so we're about to get busy here, but we're still enjoying the sunshine and the quiet weather, at least for now, before rain chances return on thursday, so i'll be tracking that for you. mike's been tracking a lot, and now you're taking us to the south bay. we'll startn mountain view, where there was horrible news of a deadly crash overnight. we're focusing on the traffic incident as the investigation is now clear from 101 and the shoreline boulevard offramp just reopened as well. so everything is clear now. north, heading through mountain view for both 85 and 101 as they merge and pass by. that scene. meanwhile, heading southbound on 880, we have a growing backup. the latest i heard was we still have lanes of southbound 880 blocked. as you approach 237 five vehicles involved. no major injuries.

there. it is cold. and we have more cold mornings ahead. but then also more changes over the next few days. last week was nice and quiet. with all of that sunshine and above normal temperatures, but today we're starting out near freezing in some of our north bay valleys. but then it becomes windy in the hills and mountains, mainly in the north bay, and those overnight lows once again dip back to the 30s for some of our inland areas. now, later in the week, we will be watching out for some rain, but it is all clear and sunny today. and brentwood starts out with low 40s. we'll see the high right at about 62 degrees and then quickly back down as soon as the sun sets. and mike, you're continuing with that jam on the nimitz. yeah. unexpectedly slow here. 880 heading south into milpitas out of fremont, there are two lanes that are reported open after a crash. five vehicles and a lot of debris had this freeway closed for about 40 minutes here. again, it sounds like two lanes are open heading south from fremont into the

5:34 am
other city funds. but here's what really has people talking about. as you mentioned, laura, the first part of the plan would eliminate two police academies, police overtime and several oakland pd special units, two fire stations would be browned out next year, which means oakland would have five fire stations offline, which the firefighters union says is unsafe for everyone. staffing equals safety for us and the more firefighters you have on the street, the safer it is for oaklanders and the safer it is for all of us. i mean, we are stretched thin already. i have confidence in our fire fighters and our fire chief that we will minimize the impact, especially with it being the rainy season. that is just the first phase. there could be up to four more stations browned out before the budget gap is closed, and starting in january, the city will also ask its department heads to eliminate 91 positions through reassignment or layoffs. some of these cuts hinge on the

story. he'll join us with the latest in our next half hour. rap mogul jay-z responding after being named in a civil lawsuit accusing him and sean diddy combs of raping a 13 year old girl in 2000. that lawsuit was originally filed against combs in october. attorneys refiled it yesterday to include jay-z, whose real name is sean carter. that suit claims that the assault happened at an mtv video music awards after party. it also mentions an unnamed female celebrity and claims that she watched as carter and combs raped the victim. combs is currently in jail, facing a string of assault and rape accusations he has denied all wrongdoing. now, jay-z has issued a response a strong one to that claim, saying in part, quote, these allegations are so heinous in nature that i implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one. whomever would commit such a crime against a minor should be locked away. would you not agree? now that response goes on to say that, quote, these

and then we'll start to warm up as we go toward late morning into the afternoon, eventually reaching a high of 66 degrees 62 in dublin today. the cooler temperatures for the inland areas where we see the fog starting to reach in from the central valley, some of that, what we call tule fog that we get in the central valley, that's very low visibility and can kind of linger for a while. so we're looking at that again today. whileome of our parts of the north bay and coastal areas will be still very mild. and mike, you continue to track more and more of those backups. yeah. starting about this time every monday, we typically see a backup forming here at the bay bridge toll plaza right on schedule. and we'll see this pattern for the next two weeks. and then it will really ease off toward the end of the year. we're looking over here toward some slowing, and the metering lights should be activated. any second. a little bit for richmond, highway 37. here's the unusual backup in contra costa county highway four we know is going to build its south. 242 that is jammed to a crash right there where it merges with 680.

and that's because you're taking them out of shelters that they have built, that protect them from the elements, or you're taking away the things that they have that keep them warm. the tombstones will be displayed at san jose city hall to raise awareness about the struggles of the unhoused. 544 right now, president elect trump does not become the actual president for another 42 days. scott mcgrew is here with us this morning. and, scott, i have ask you this. so he's meeting with foreign dignitaries already. they're already making some deals. making some deals. you have to be very careful. there's a fine line legally when doing this as america only has one president at a time, though current president biden getting some of the blame as well. one democratic leader calling him the lamest of lame ducks as donald trump appears on the world stage touring the newly renovated notre dame with french president macron and meeting with ukrainian president zelenskyy and speaking about the end of the war in syria. the wall street journal quoting a number of democrats this morning
5:46 am
who are unhappy with biden's relatively quiet. president biden also spoke about the war in syria over the weekend, though a day after trump did. we will remain vigilant. make no mistake, some of the rebel groups that took down assad have their own grim record of terrorism and human rights abuses. we've taken note of statements by the leaders of these rebel groups in recent days, and they're saying the right things now. but as they take on greater responsibility, we will assess not just their words, but their actions. now, at the end of the war, huge ramifications for the middle east, of course, as now there's an enormous power vacuum and our allies in rkey, well, they don't like our allies in syria. the kurds. it also may free up russian troops to fight in ukraine. so there's lots to watch. busy weekend president elect trump on meet the press, where he covered a number of topics, saying the congressional members of the january 6th committee ought to be jailed and claimed crime is at an all time
5:47 am
high. it is not. he was also asked about his plan for health care. he says he wants to repeal and replace the affordable care act. he said that for many years now, but still says he only has concepts of a plan to do so. when he was president, he often said the release of that master plan was just days away. he also said he would end birthright tizenship. this is when someone becomes an american citizen because they were born here. doesn't matter if their parents are american, it's in the constitution. so it's not really something president can revoke on his own. and for the first time, he acknowledges his tariffs may cause higher prices. economists say it will not may. you are now proposing tariffs against the united states. three biggest trading partners, economists of all stripes say that ultimately consumers pay the price of tariffs. i don't believe. can you guarantee american families won't pay more? i can't guarantee
5:48 am
anything, i can't guarantee. tomorrow, president elect trump says he'll place a 25% tariff on mexico and canada, making those products from those countries that much more expensive. now, over the weekend, the province of ontario ran a commercial during the 49ers game, reminding americans of how dependent we are. and they are laura on free trade. they haveve to pay the price for it. well thank you. well, you mentioned this, scott, but today, for the first time since fire ravaged notre dame more than five years ago, visitors can tour the newly refurbished cathedral. the doors officially opened over the weekend and today in the bay's jay gray is in paris with a closer look at the historic worldwide celebration. hey there. good morning paris. and just outside of notre dame, where you can hear the bells ringing. lines started to stretch from the cathedral before sunrise this morning. the excitement surrounding the reopening of notre dame, fueled by a historic weekend here, the solemn toll of the ancient bell.
5:49 am
the haunting moan of the cathedral's grand organ, along with the angelic serenade of youth choir announcing the return of notre dame. it's a symbol of paris, of course, but it's a symbol of humanity and freedom and kindness all over the world. the iconic church ravaged by fire five and a half years ago. firefighters rushing in, followed by construction teams, artisans, craftsmen and architects. close to 2000 men and women, many of those heroes honored with a standing ovation that lasted several minutes. as they take their place in the cathedral. they brought back to life such an amazing, amazing structure. so the flying buttresses and gargoyles and the rose window, it's amazing. they
5:50 am
did it right. amazing. very proud of them. saturday. dignitaries and heads of state gather for the opening ceremony, including first lady doctor jill biden and president elect donald trump. sunday morning, paris archbishop laurent ulrich leads the first mass since the fire, joined by nearly 170 bishops from france and around the world, and 2500 invited guests. a special moment during the service, the blessing of a new bronze altar. then sunday evening, the first mass opened to the public. the faithful finally returning to worship inside the pristine, refurbished cathedral. in the coming days, notre dame will extend visiting hours until 1030 at night, expecting as many as 40,000 each day to visit the refurbished cathedral. jay gray nbc news,

paris. and the today show's craig melvin was the first u.s. broadcast journalist to get a look inside. later this morning, it's going to provide exclusive access to the restored cathedral with a special tour of the second level. that's coming up for you at 7:00 this morning, right after us here on today in the bay. it's such a beautiful place. okay, let's talk a little football this morning. with four games left. the 49ers still alive in their push to grab a playoff spot. yesterday at levi's. the chicago bears were easy prey. quarterback brock purdy had a great bounce back game, throwing for 325 yards. and by halftime, the niners led 24. nothing. they did lose another running back to injury. recently signed isaac guerendo, scoring two touchdowns before hurting his foot. the niners won the game 3813. snap a three game losing streak. trading for you this morning. the sports world is buzzing about the newest and richest ever contract. baseball's new york mets have reportedly signed juan soto to a
5:52 am
$765 million deal. that contract spans 15 years. it also includes a clause that may boost that total to $805 million. so those contracts are passes the then record $700 million contract deal that was for so hey ohtani signed by the dodgers just one year ago. wow. wow. i did the math. it's $51 million a year. that's a phenomenal number. but also 15 years, right? that's a longng time to play ball, right? that's a long time. how young is he? i don't know. i don't know. they do this weird thing in baseball, though, where they're deferring payments until even after they're done with their career, which i'm okay with that. i guess i'd be fine with that. so give me the check. hey, i've been here almost 25 years. producers say he's 26. so there you have it. look at that, though. wow. but you can play a lot longer in baseball than you can. obviously, you know, football versus football because you get a, you know, an injury.
5:53 am
there you go. all right. not bad for a 26 year old. good for you, juan. let's call our cousin up and see what he's doing. brie marcus soto, washington. that's what my grandmother's father's side does. everybody's got a cousin these days. all right, let's check the forecast with kari. i had multiple layers on when i walked out the door. yes, it is a morning to layer up. we're going to have more cold mornings ahead. at least we don't have to worry about the umbrella just yet. as we take a live look outside in san francisco, we are seeing a nice at 50 degrees while in the north bay we've dropped down into the 30s. sonoma 33 and about the same in napa. just 1 degrees above freezing. while as you head over toward the east bay, temperatures vary from upper 30s in fremont to 52 in pleasanton and in san jose. it is now 44 degrees. let's get a look at cupertino and what to expect over the next several hours. going from upper 40s at 8:00 to a noontime temperature of 60 degrees and really nice and
5:54 am
comfortable throughout the day. comfortably cool. this is about what we typically see for the beginning to middle of december. for this time of year. our temperatures are very normal and maybe even a little bit above normal for spots like gilroy, with a high expected up to 68 degrees. it will be 62 in pleasanton and up to 64 today in martinez, as well as in palo alto, 61 in daly city and 64 downtown san francisco. for the north bay, look for those highs also in the mid 60s. and then looking ahead. while we are all clear now, we continue to see all the clouds and the storm systems remaining well off the coast. it's been blocked by high pressure, but that's going to move out the way and eventually allow for storm systems to start to make its way back to the bay area. we'll see that happening on thursday. and then another storm system right behind that, moving in between late friday and saturday. and then it looks like it tapers off on sunday with more storm systems coming
5:55 am
in after that. as we tee it up heading into our christmas holiday. it looks like it's going to be quite soggy out there and very active even just this week. we're looking at the potential for parts of the north bay to get about 3 to 4in of rainfall, but that's going to be where we see the heaviest rain focus over the next few days. and we're seeing once again a change in the pattern, bringing in cooler temperatures, more clouds and rain. but we do still have a couple of more days to enjoy the warmer than normal temperatures and the sunshine. mike, you have yet another crash details are alarming, although the impact on the traffic seems minimal. we're looking at southbound, not the slow slide, but the counter commute southbound direction of 101. the trimble exit there, or de la cruz. however, you know that right by the airport there is a crash. reportedly, a car went off the roadway going a too little fast, perhaps, and took the vehicle off the road. there is a crash and possibly a car fire. again, this sounds alarming, but the impact look is
5:56 am
minimal as far as the speed sensors go. still getting more detail as chp arrives on scene and gives us more information regarding that crash. meanwhile, the commute direction northbound is showing a pretty typical slowdown up to oakland road and another around trimble by the crash. but it's the opposite side of the freeway. flashing lights would be a distraction, causing some more slowing. now this southbound 880 continues with slowing. we have one lane that's open southbound earlier, five vehicles involved in crashes. no major injuries, but a lot of slowing heading south into milpitas out of fremont. keep that in mind for 886. 80 is smooth coming down through fremont and milpitas, and you may want to take that down to calaveras over here. the corner westbound highway four is building up as far as the slowing goes, but we're still jammed up south. 242. that crash at the 680 merge is causing some more slowing as folks are traveling in the commute direction through concord. meanwhile, the rest of the east bay pretty standard, including the backup at the bay bridge, now filling in most of the lanes. back to you. all right,
5:57 am
mike, thank you. well, happening right now. calistoga animal shelter is asking for help. this is after crates of small dogs were just dumped outside of town. the workers say 27 chihuahuas were crammed into small crates and abandoned just a few nights ago. those dogs are not adoptable just yet. the shelter is already at capacity, so they are actually asking people to help out to ease the crunch right now with people to possibly foster or adopt. and it's actually waiving all of the usual adoption fees. certainly a busy monday here on today in the bay, including a shooting investigation in the east bay. we're following video at the scene shows a car with bullet holes. ahead at 6:00. new details we're getting from the chp. and later. are you slacking from working from home when you should be working? the one industry where some experts claim workers are not actually putting in the time when they're remote. and don't forget nbc bay area streams 24/7. you can watch us whenever you'd like on roku or other streaming platforms. a lot more news ahead on this
