last week's killing of a health with murder. what authoritiesd are saying about luigi mangione and the suspect's ties to the bay area. also, president elect donald trump is making more picks for his cabinet. the lawyer and ex-california gop official being tapped for a job in the department of justice. this is today in the bay. good tuesday morning to you. 5:00 right w. thanks for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we'll get a look at that commute for you in just a bit with mike. but first, let's start out with that cold start to our morning. meteorologist kari hall been tracking that? yeah, it's one of the colder mornings of the week, and we've seen in some parts of the bay area not only fog, but also near freezing temperatures. and we are now down to 31 in santa rosa. so definitely freezing there. but elsewhere, we are seeing temperatures in the 40s and low 50s, and it is now 49. in hayward, while 52 in san

francisco. we're going to see those temperatures cold start. but warming up for parts of the south bay. you'll notice in the north bay and the inland east bay, it will be lower than it was yesterday with highs in the upper 50s for napa and novato and 57 in martinez. this is where the fog that you may be seeing out the window right now could linger a lot longer. and that's going to keep those temperatures down. eventually we'll have rain coming back. so we'll talk about that in a few minutes. and mike, you are also seeing some of that fog on the map. that's right. we take the weather data and my traffic computer is translated to what might be experienced on the ground showing that yellow highlighting right here. highway four out of antioch, across the bridge and along the delta right there into concord. just the no, no big surprises there coming through patches of the north bay will expect, perhaps, that that might continue as we take a look bay. there is a very seriousrth crash. they've closed down, basically. local police, rohnert park have closed down stoney point road right here for this
5:03 am
stretch between wilfred and lowell. that means you have to go about three miles out, half a mile and a half out and a mile and a half back. if you want to use 101 as your alternate. but that really is your only good alternate, as these are the major roadways here, stoney point and rohnert parkway. so we're going to watch that area of the north bay. but everything else, the freeways through the north bay, move very smoothly all the way down along to the south bay. there may be a new incident in san jose. we'll check on that report. and over here, 80 at 92. that's over on the shoulder. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, new overnight, a huge scare for police officers at the scene of a deadly crash in pittsburgh. suddenly, a car plows into a crash and a scene there, and they nearly became victims themselves. today in the bay's. kris sanchez is here with us right now. okay, so, chris, the driver is now in custody. yes. and we know that that driver now is likely going to be charged with driving under the influence because she appeared to be impaired when she slammed into those three police patrol cars in pittsburgh. the officers were at the scene of a deadly solo
5:04 am
crash that happened earlier in the evening around 7:00 in pittsburgh, and they were about five hours into that investigation. the cruisers were parked with their their flashing lights on. there were reflective barricades blocking the roadway when that driver ran a traffic light and plowed into those three patrol cars. we were able to manage traffic for the first 5.5 hours. we were out here without anybody running through the barricade. this last vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed than was safe for the roadway, and didn't see, for whatever reason, didn't see the barricade or the police cars with their emergency equipment on. and you could see some of that emergency equipment in the video along with those flashing lights. now, the captain said that the driver did show visible signs of impairment and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. that crash and the original crash are still under investigation. the original crash damaged a pg&e

pole which knocked out power. at this point, it looks like it's only impacting one customer. the captain did not mention whether the power outage maybe had an impact on that stoplight that the suspected dui driver ran. marcus. all right. chris. thank you. 504 for you right now and an observant fast food worker being credited for ending one of the largest manhunts in years. one which led to the arrest in the shooting of unitedhealthcare ceo. new york city prosecutors have already charged 26 year old luigi mangione with murder. he's now awaiting extradition. now, authorities in pennsylvania arrested him yesterday as he sat eating breakfast at a mcdonald's in altoona. police say that officers also discovered a ghost gun, similar to the one used in killing ceo brian thompson, and other evidence tied to that investigation, including fake ids and a three page manifesto. the suspect is an ivy league graduate, one who who one childhood friend confirms was

valedictorian at their all boys prep school in baltimore. there was nothing came off weird about him. he had great friends. he had a lot of female friends as well. he was a relatively unassuming kid. he was down to earth. he was smart, well adjusted socially. he was at least a two sport athlete from what i can remember, and he really had everything going for him. the suspect is now facing five criminal counts, including murder. university of pennsylvania says he graduated in 2020 with a bachelor's and master's degree in computer science. police are saying his last known address was in hawaii. the san francisco standard reports the suspect's mother last month reported him missing to san francisco police, but his bay area ties went deeper than that and include a job he once held at stanford. our investigative reporter, candice nguyen is digging deeper into the details. stanford confirms that about five years ago, a person named luigi mangione was a head counselor
5:07 am
for their university. social media pictures appear to show mangione with several other counselors in stanford in 2019. now, this is a part of that facebook group photo you're looking at. mangione. his facebook page has since been taken down. stanford told me today a luigi mangione was employed with them from may to about september 2019, with stanford pre-collegiate students program. we wanted to learn more about this stanford program. what is it and what did mangione do t there? according to their website, it's a summer program for promising high school students. it gives them a sense of what it's like to be at stanford. mangione's linkedin profile shows he specialized as an artificial intelligence teaching assistant, teaching these students about ai. it also says he supervised more than a dozen of these students as a residential counselor and led other counselors. mangione's linkedin shows. more recently, he was working at a company called truecar in santa monica in southern california. he started there in october 2022. now, that's a company that helps

car buyers with research and pricing transparency. mangione was a full time level three data engineer there. a truecar spokesperson told me he parted ways with them in 2023. it's unclear why. candice nguyen, nbc bay area we investigate president elect donald trump is tapping another bay area leader for a high ranking job in his administration. he's nominating state republican party leader harmeet dhillon to be his assistant attorney general for the civil rights division. her law practice is based in san francisco, and she's california's party vice chair, along with co-chair of the group called women for trump on truth social. trump said, quote, throughout her career, harmeet has stood up consistently to protect our cherished civil liberties, including taking on big tech and censoring our free speech, representing christians who were prevented from praying together during covid and suing corporations who use woke policies to discriminate against

understand. isn't there a frost advisory like in the east bay? yeah. so we have a pretty widespread frost advisory in effect this morning. and that may mean you have to allow some extra time to get the frost off the windshield before you hit the road to go to work this morning. and we will also have some mild temperatures again today. looking ahead, there will be rain chances coming back to the bay area starting on thursday, and then we'll see rounds of rain in the forecast into the weekend. some heavier rain expected on saturday with higher winds, and then we'll also see the return of the tidal flooding near the coastline and some of the low lying areas for the bay. starting on friday and continuing into the weekend. but at the same time, we're seeing some low visibility in spots, including the delta and parts of the central valley. i'll continue to watch that and we'll talk more about what's ahead. mike has a look at what you can expect at the pump this morning. yeah. there have been some subtle changes, so we're no longer dominating the top ten. last bay area city in the top ten is livermore. and it's still we've got our low of 319. the

familiar ones the marathons, the one on holmes and the one on south livermore avenue in that city. then in san francisco, our low is 349. today. it's quick stop at speed. it's a quick stop at speedway on cesar chavez street. and then we'll call on the south bay's low of 369 again. today you're going to call out cupertino, cupertino car wash on north de anza boulevard for that price point. you find a few of them around the south bay. you'll find gasbuddy.com will give you a best locations, best prices in your area and on the roadway. we're doing a pretty good drive as far as those speed sensors go. green. that yellow highlighting over on the right side and heading up to the top of the screen. fog registering throughout much of the east bay. contra costa county drive coming down vasco road may be an issue as you head through brentwood, then clearing. by the time we get to 580 and out of the altamont pass. so these travel times, they're just fine right now. again, use caution, lower visibility. vasco road just starting to see a little more traffic coming down out of contra costa county. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, the season of giving is in full swing at oracle park. still ahead on today in the bay. the

now at 46 degrees and expecting those temperatures to drop. a few more degrees around sunrise. and as we go throughout the day, it's going to be partly cloudy and another nice one, but a little bit cooler than it was yesterday. by tomorrow we'll see more clouds and eventually some rain. we'll talk about the timeline coming up in a few minutes. and we are looking at fremont 880 southbound with those headlights heading into silicon valley, northbound heading up in toward hayward and oakland. no slowing along the stretch. the entire nimitz looking at speed. that's great, but we're starting with the creep. we should see some speeds coming down a little bit in the north bay. we'll check on that coming up. well, good morning. very happy tuesday to you. bytedance, the company that owns tiktok, wants the u.s. supreme court to step in and block the law that will require it to sell tiktok or shut tiktok down. doesn't mean the supme court is going to take the case. we will see reddit says it's going to create a service where you can ask questions of it, and it will answer based on its

millions of postings using ai and google. with a huge development, it's created the fastest quantum computer chip ever. here's a look at it. they call it willow. and you might wonder, well, if a quantum chip works on the subatomic level, why is this thing so big? it's mostly a refrigerator. you have to make qubits really, really cold for them to work. and what can this computer do? it can solve a math problem that would take a regular supercomputer ten septillion years to solve ten septillion years is more time than the age of the universe. way more. other news, canadian prime minister justin trudeau says canada will pay a 25% tariffs on all american goods if donald trump goes through his promise to tax canadian goods. trudeau warning a trade war between two friendly free trading countries will raise prices for everyone. americans, he said, are beginning to wake
5:18 am
up to the real reality that tariffs on everything from canada would make life in america a lot more expensive. i was speaking to the manufacturer of artificial christmas trees in redwood city recently, who says if america goes through with massive tariffs on materials from mexico and china where they have factories, the cost of your christmas tree will go up by a lot. we use equipment. we have some machines that cost millions of dollars and are the size of a football field. like that is not something you can just pick up and you can't even put it on a truck, right? you have to disassemble it like it's a huge investment of millions of dollars and a factory that makes christmas trees is like a 50 to $100 million investment. and so those are slower to move. now we have actually moved and we have some of our production outside of china now in asia. and so that's an investment decision. we made years ago in anticipation of potential tariffs because we understand, you know, there are reasons to diversify the supply chain. and
5:19 am
we sort of saw where this was going. but we can't do everything there overnight. it's going to take time. harmon saying the same thing a lot of manufacturers say when you say we'll just move to america, they'll say, you understand our factory is ten football fields big, right? we'd have to move it by ship and you put it right. and how do you get a christmas tree in the in the three years it's going to take to move that factory. yeah. all right. good thing you just got one. thanks, gaugh. well happening today. holiday heroes taking over oracle park. it's all for the annual holiday heroes event. money raised goes to the winter wish foundation, which helps underserved children. it will be jam packed today with arts, crafts, cookie decorating. they're having face painting as well. you can also take a swing in the giants batting cages and meet mascots and athletes, including hunter pence and brandi chastain. and over in mountain view, it's shining a little brighter after the community tree lhting ceremony took place last night over at city hall plaza, our very own robert honda hosted the event.

you see, right there, there were a series of local performances, crafts, food and games, and of course, the beautiful tree lighting. look at it. it's really beautiful. their special guests include santa and mrs. claus. wow. that's nice. they could take time because they're busy right now. yes, they are here. it's their season. yeah. make a stop here. you know, busy. so are you. yeah. we have a lot going on from tracking socal santa ana winds to still seeing the very cold conditions across the bay area, a warm up and then rain ahead and then that rain is also going to be with us throughout the weekend, kind of off and on. right now we're down to 39 degrees in palo alto. in san jose it is 42 degrees and 40 right now in walnut creek, and may drop another few degrees in dublin. it's also 40 degrees and we are going to see those temperatures down to about 37 in the next hour. and then throughout the day, look for those temperatures to gradually warm up. but it
5:21 am
won't be as warm as it was yesterday. for many of us. we're still in the upper 60s for the south county, for morgan hill and gilroy. today, san jose, 66 degrees. but it will be a little bit cooler for much of the east bay. with walnut creek today, up to 57 degrees 59 in livermore and in oakland, we're going to be in the mid 60s. and then looking at san mateo today, 62 degrees with some low 60s as well for much of san francisco, 59 for the outer sunset and then upper 50s and low 60s for the north bay. so we are once again all clear this morning, seeing that fog settle in. but then as we go into the next couple of days, eventually this storm system will start to move in and we will have some rain returning to the bay area starting on thursday. so this first wave of rain comes in fairly quickly. it gets in and out of here and then we're dry for the day for most of the day on friday, and then on saturday we're looking at some widespread rain happening
5:22 am
and then another round of rain in the forecast on monday, tuesday, wednesday, possibly seeing some more rain ahead. so we are going to have a lot more active weather and a lot of rainfall with the possibility of seeing possibly 5 to 6in of rainfall for the coastal areas in the north bay and then the rest of the bay area. looks like the storms will be a little bit wetter than originally anticipated. and then for the sierra, we're going to see anywhere from possibly 1 to 2ft of snow for the weekend into monday. so we're going to have some very wet weather. we are still dry today and another day with above normal highs and then cold again tonight. but then seeing that active storm pattern ramping up starting on thursday. and mike, you're tracking a crash. what's the update. yeah. suddenly showing up on our grid without a lot of detail. chp has told us that north 101 has stopped all lanes of traffic. as you approach 380, that's the reference point. sfo they're traveling north on 101 towards
5:23 am
san francisco and it seems like there's a crash there. and again, no detail comes in just yet, but it's in the social media log. so it sounds like something different is going on than your typical crash. we'll follow that heading along the peninsula. 280 is fine though. getting into san francisco. typical slowing for highway 37. no major issues there. there is some fog along highway four where we're seeing just a little break tapper to concord and south on 242. so there's the start as you head down through contra costa county, rest of the bay is standard. back to you. thanks, mike. well, there's much more news ahead on today in the bay. a reminder, though, that we help to make sure everyone has food on the table this holiday. our nourishing neighbors food drive is underway right now. it's really easy to help out the next time you're at your local safeway, you can donate $10 at the checkout. that money benefits bay area food banks serving hundreds of thousands of people. our nourishing neighbors drive runs through christmas day. 523 we'll be

if you think an airline owes you money, the first thing you should do is obvious. but i'm going to say it anyway. you should save your receipts. next, check the federal government's airline customer service dashboard. it's online at flight rights dot gov. the dashboard lists carrier by carrier what each airline offers or doesn't offer. the reason for a delay or cancellation matters. airlines don't cover expenses for things
5:27 am
that are beyond their control, like weather, but they can cover things like maintenance issues and it meltdowns on the dashboard. each airline name is a link to its full popolicy. we follow the united link and found it's pretty clear, for example, when controllable delays or cancellations go overnight, united's policy says it will offer you a free hotel. or if you have to book one yourself, you can submit your receipt to our customer care team and will reimburse you for reasonable hotel costs. if you want to file for reimbursement, do so fast. while the airline's records are still fresh, include your confirmation code, ticket number, or boarding pass. if you write a letter, be succinct. stick to the facts, then share your receipts. expect a reply within a a couple of weeks. although no airline offers cash compensation when it inconveniences passengers, many do offer an olive branch in the form of airline miles or vouchers. a future free flight might make a sour travel experience a little less bitter.

5:32 am
eunice near spruce street. there was a lot of damage to the front deck. you can see there. the tree also clipped the roof of a neighboring home. luckily, no one was injured. elsewhere, a large branch fell on top of a pickup truck. this is on mlk way near cedar street. it's also partially blocked in the road. first responders are calling it a reminder to make sure that your trees are trimmed and in good shape with the arrival of winter. also breaking now in southern california, firefighters are battling a wildfire which exploded in size overnight near malibu. it's close to pepperdine college. it started a little before 11:00 last night, and within a few hours grew to nearly a thousand acres. evacuation orders are in effect for hundreds of homes, and pepperdine students are being told to shelter in place. meteorologist kari hall is tracking conditions for firefighters. there who are also dealing with this so-called santa ana winds, right now. they can be fierce in that area. yeah. and so that's those downslope winds that blow offshore can have very low
5:33 am
humidity. and that prompted the national weather service to issue a very rare pds red flag warning. that's a particularly dangerous situation. they only do this in extreme situations. and that's what we are seeing right now as those winds continue at 50 to 80mph around l.a. county and around the ventura and also malibu areas, relative humidity has dropped into the single digits. this as the wind this morning is peaking at about 50 to 60mph, and we are going to still see those offshore winds blowing throughout the morning into the afternoon. and unfortunately, it makes it really hard to even get close to a fire when it's burning under these conditions. so we're expecting that fire to continue to spread and get worse before it gets better. we'll continue to watch that. we are also seeing some breezy winds in some of our hills, but in a lot of our valleys and low lying areas, we're not getting a wind at all. and in san francisco
5:34 am
it's 49 degrees right now, a calm wind, and we're going to see those temperatures remain cool throughout the morning. and also into the afternoon. we'll be tracking all of those conditions. mike. been watching this crash. what's the update? you know the best i can tell. highway 101 is still blocked just north of 380. and this will affect folks traveling to sfo. park and ride. keep in mind you need to get off early and take airport boulevard along the eastern side of highway 101. meanwhile, to the west, you can take 380 and get over to 280 if you need to get past that scene. we're looking at this crash and investigation, very scant details. chp just lets us know that it is there in that area. 280 getting into san francisco is without any incident or any slowing. 101 through san jose shows a typical slowing right around oakland road. no major issues, but there's some fog causing perhaps some visibility issues for highway 80. highway four along the delta, so watch for that. back to you. thanks so much, mike. a suspected drunk driver is under arrest this morning after smashing into three police patrol cars that

were stationed at a deadly accident in the east bay. the chain of events played out last night in pittsburgh. officers were already at the scene of a deadly solo crash. happened about 7:00 at night. but some four hours later, with the investation ongoing, police say a drunk driver plowed through barriers into three patrol cars, all of which luckily were empty. the driver did not suffer serious injuries, but she was arrested at the scene. our kris sanchez is following up this story. she'll join us with a full report in our next half hour. 534 right now we're developing this morning the ivy league graduate accused of murdering united health care ceo brian thompson awaits extradition now, and surprising new details are emerging about his background. and it includes ties to the bay area. today in the bay ginger conejero saab live for us this morning. so, ginger, the suspect worked here. what, about five years ago? that's correct. good morning. marcus and laura stanford confirms that luigi
5:36 am
mangione worked there at one point. police say that he has ties to san francisco. the standard is reporting that his mom reported him missing to sfpd last month. but this morning, authorities are still trying to piece tether answers. police arrested the suspect, luigi mangione, yesterday at a mcdonald's in altoona, pennsylvania. that's about 280 miles west of new york. after he eluded them for almost one week. officers say he was sitting eating breakfast when an employee spotted him and called authorities. and when they asked him if he had recently been to new york, police say he became quiet and started to shake. they say he showed them a fake id, and they later discovered a gun and a silencer, similar to the one used in the shooting. now, police also recovered a handwritten document they believe speaks to his motivation and mindset. nypd says the photos released in this case, especially the one where the suspect's face was seen, were

pray for all involved. we are devastated by the news. now our candice nguyen delves deeper into mangione's ties here in the bay area. you can watch her story in the next half hour. for now, we're live in san francisc, ginger conejero saab. today in the bay. all right, ginger, thank you. well, happening today a man investigators say shot and killed his coworker at a vta bus yard is scheduled to enter a plea in september. san jose police say 33 year old bus operator duk min bui shot and killed his fellow driver, angeles teotico. it happened at the vta yard on south seventh street in san jose. investigators later determined the shooting may have sprung from a gambling debt. that hearing is scheduled to happen this morning. now to a live look in san francisco. this is where leaders today will break down results of this year's crime prevention efforts. mayor london breed will join da brooke jenkins, police chief bill scott and sheriff paul miyamoto to

over to you, mike, highway 101, is it still blocked? yeah, right by the airport. so folks heading to sfo need to really take note. there may be a delay for you getting to the park and fly area. if that's where you're going to drop someone off or if you're heading up past the area. in fact, from what i'm understanding, they may be forcing all traffic northbound 101 off at airport boulevard. that would take you right past the areas where you need to go for drop off, but that will be a reroute. meanwhile, if you're just heading into the city, get over to 280. that is clear. getting in towards san francisco. chp is not giving us a lot of detail, so i don't know when they expect to have those lanes reopened. meanwhile, coming over from the east bay, we do have a build up over at the toll plaza in the last few minutes, we've seen this lineup starting over here, coming off the 880 overcrossing, it's just started to move a little better as the middle lane start to fill up. same typical pattern that we see on a tuesday, but it's a little bit lighter than that. 542 normally is. expect that crowd to come in off the east shore freeway, though. there's some fog out there, so keep that

5:51 am
only about half the people who ought to get vaccinated are getting vaccinated, and we should do better if. if you look across the americas, there are other countries, for example, who have much higher rates of vaccination than we do. so i am optimistic that we can reach those vaccination coverages if we get the word out and people go seek vaccination. cdc physicians tell us getting vaccinated helps lessen severe symptoms as winter viruses such as the flu, rsv and covid 19. well, this morning you can get one last look at lafayette's long shuttered park. theater crews are set to start those renovations next month. today, visitors can tour the theater on golden gate way. the iconic marquis tower, and meet the team behind the plans. that theater was built in 1941 and was forced to shut its doors back k in 200. it's set to reopen next year. 551 trending this morning. america runs on dunkin deodorant. yeah, right. so the chain is teaming up with native on a limited edition line of deodorant, shampoos, conditioners and other body care

5:54 am
then other than that, it's going to be a sunny day. and then we see the fog and some of the inland areas clearing gradually. tomorrow we'll see clouds coming in, out ahead of the rain that we're expecting starting on thursday. and we'll also have the return of king tides near the coastline. and for parts of the bay shore that causes that flooding that we see with the tides and looking at our temperatures around the bay area. concord, you're starting out at 40 degrees. it's 35 in danville, and it's 42 in san jose, santa rosa down t to 29 degrees right now. and we are going to see those below freezing temperatures through the next hour and then gradually starting to warm up as we go throughout the morning. it won't be as warm as it was yesterday. we're going to see a high of 62 and upper 50s for novato and napa, and in concord 57 degrees. so a lot of the central valley fog that we're seeing creeping in through the delta, we'll keep those temperatures down. and tomorrow, mostly cloudy with

highs in the upper 60s in the south county. but notice that on thursday it is going to be much cooler. but that's also when we're expecting this storm system that's offshore to start to move in bringing us some rain. and we will see waves of rain throughout the day on thursday. and friday there will be a brief break, but then the next storm system that as of right now looks a little bit stronger. we'll start to come in and produce some rain and wind. and then on monday, another storm system arriving and it looks pretty busy, even after that, going throughout much of next week, at least watching some rain nearby and the rainfall totals that we're expecting between now and monday could reach possibly 5 to 6in in parts of the coastal north bay, and then looking at the purple shading, that's 3 to 4in in the east bay with san jose possibly getting about 1 to 2in n of rainfall throughout the weekend. and the sierra is looking at the possibility of about 1 to 2ft of snow between now and monday. so

it's going to get quite busy here at least we are still enjoying the sunshine for this afternoon and much of the day tomorrow. but then starting to see rain chances increasing on thursday as well as more rain for the weekend. mike, you've got some new info on why part of 101 is closed. yeah, very unpleasant, but as we suspected, there's a very serious issue here. north 101 is blocked. all lanes are blocked just north of 380. folks are being forced off of the freeway at airport boulevard. you can use airport boulevard or san mateo avenue to get past the scene. if you need to access sfo, you have to use airport boulevard because the freeway exits you n normally uld take are not available right now. it turns out that there's an investigation of a death on the freeway right there, and so that will take a while until the coroner gets there and is able to conduct this investigation for north 101. again, those surface streets i mentioned or 280 are your ways to get past the airport. sfo is starting to see slowing down as you approach airport boulevard now for north 101. aside from that portion of
