wreck during a crash investigation. a suspected drunk driver slams into multiple patrol cars. new details on the close call for first responders. i can tell you that this is one of the last people you'd think would do something like this. charged with murder. the suspect wanted in the deadly shooting of a health insurance ceo is arrested after a lengthy manhunt. the new information we have this morning about his ties to the bay area. this is today in the bay. good morning to you. on this tuesday, i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. so we begin with breaking news out of the east bay, where strong winds caused a redwood tree to come crashing down into someone's home. it happened on eunice near spruce street. the tree also clipped the roof of a neighboring home, but no one was injured. first responders are calling it a reminder to make sure your trees are trimmed and in good shape.
6:02 am
with this soon arrival of winter. now let's turn to meteorologist kari hall. how are conditions looking right now? yeah, most of us are feeling a calm wind, but i did see some of the peak wind gusts around grizzly peak up to about 49mph. while the valleys are feeling a calm wind. the temperature is dropping and we'll have a frost advisory in effect until 9:00 this morning. and then becoming sunny. increasing clouds tomorrow. and then we are looking at rain in the forecast starting on thursday, along with king tides ahead of the weekend. and as we start out right now, it is a very cold and we're also seeing some patchy fog as our high temperatures head for the upper 50s. it will be cooler than it was yesterday. and mike, you have a closure on 101. yes. i need our friends to look at the screen. folks, let me give you a map of the entire bay where there's not a lot of sensor reads that look unusual until we zoom in to this portion of the peninsula. if you're heading to or past sfo from the peninsula, keep this in mind. north 101 is closed and will
6:03 am
remain closed for a period of time just north of 380. folks are having to get off the freeway around the south san francisco exit. you can use airport boulevard to get around your way. if you have to go to sfo, pick up someone, or drop someone off. you can use san mateo avenue as an alternate along city streets, but that will get very crowded over the next half hour. 280 is a much better route if you're going from south bay up into san francisco. meanwhile, the rest of the east bay shows a pretty standard pattern. back to you. thanks, mike. well, new overnight, a huge scare for police officers at the scene of a deadly crash in pittsburgh. suddenly, a car plows into the crash scene. they were investigating, and they nearly became victims themselves. today in the bay's kris sanchez. look. okay, so, kris, we do know that that driver now in custody. yes. there is one driver in custody. that driver under arrest on suspicion of being drunk behind the wheel when she slammed into three pittsburgh police patrol cars. the officers were at the scene of a deadly solo crash that happened around 7:00 last night on east leland road between loveridge road and
6:04 am
gladstone drive in pittsburgh. they were about five hours into that investigation, and though it was dark, the patrol cars were parked with their flashing lights on. as you can see, there were reflective barricades blocking the roadway. and yet a driver appeared to run a traffic light and plowed into those three patrol cars. we were able to manage traffic for the first 5.5 hours. we were out here without anybody running through the barricade. this last vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed than was safe for the roadway, and didn't see, for whatever reason, didn't see the barricade or the police cars with their emergency equipment on. now, the captain said that the driver did show visible signs of impairment at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. that crash and the original crash are under investigation. the original crash did damage a pg&e pole which knocked out power. at this point, it looks like there's only one customer
6:05 am
impacted, but the captain did not mention whether the power outage might have affected that stoplight that the suspected dui driver ran. marcus. all right. chris. thank you. well, it was an observant fast food worker being credited for ending one of the longest man or. largest, i should say, manhunts in years. this also led to the arrest of the shooter and or the possible shooter in united healthcare's ceo. so new york city prosecutors, they have already charged 26 year old luigi mangione with murder. he is now awaiting his extradition. now, authorities in pennsylvania arrested him yesterday as he sat eating breakfast at a mcdonald's in altoona. police say that officers also discovered a ghost gun, similar to the one used in the killing of ceo brian thompson, and other evidence tied to the investigation, including fake ids and a three page manifesto. the suspect now facing five criminal counts, including murder. university of pennsylvania saying that he graduated in 2020 with bachelor's and master's degrees

in computer science. police are saying that his last known address was in hawaii. well, san francisco standard reporting that the suspect's mother last month reported him missing to san francisco police. but his bay area ties went deeper than that and include a job once held at stanford. our investigative reporter, candice nguyen, is really digging deeper into those details. stanford confirms that about five years ago, a person named luigi mangione was a head counselor for their university. social media pictures appear to show mangione with several other counselors in stanford in 2019. now, this is a part of that facebook group photo. you're looking at mangione. his facebook page has since been taken down. stanford told me today a luigi mangione was employed with them from may to about september 2019, with stanford pre-collegiate students program. we wanted to learn more about this stanford program. what is it and what did mangione do there? according to their website, it's a summer program for promising high school students. it gives them a sense
6:07 am
of what it's like to be at stanford. mangione's linkedin profile shows he specialized as an artificial intelligence teaching assistant, teaching these students about ai. it also says he supervised more than a dozen of these students as a residential counselor, and led other counselors. mangione's linkedin shows more recently, he was working at a company called truecar in santa monica in southern california. he started there in october 2022. now, that's a company that helps car buyers with research and pricing transparency. mangione was a full time level three data engineer there. a truecar spokesperson told me he parted ways with them in 2023. it's unclear why. candice nguyen, nbc bay area we investigate. 607 right now, jurors in san francisco today will continue their deliberations over the fate of nima momeni. he is facing a single count of murder in the stabbing death of cash app co-founder bob lee in april of 2023. his attorneys claim he

stabbed lee in self-defense after lee brandished a knife. while prosecutors argue the dna on the knife handle is almost entirely momentous. if jurors cannot reach a consensus on the murder charge, they can consider a lesser charge of second degree murder. voluntary manslaughter or involuntary manslaughter. and when the jury reaches a decisio, we'll break into programing to bring you that verdict. we'll also send a breaking news alert on our nbc bay area app, along with complete coverage that you can find at nbcbayarea.com. anxious families in san francisco are expected to learn tonight how school leaders plan to close a massive budget shortfall. board members are trying to slice more than $100 million from the budget through cutting more than 500 jobs. until recently, school closures were in the works, but the new superintendent took that plan off the table with the idea of creating a budget stabilization plan that includes incentives for early retirement. board members are scheduled to vote on

we'll be tracking all the changes and also giving you an update on the incoming rain in a few minutes. looking at gas prices, mike, where are they? a little bit lower. we're doing our best to check. but you know, we have old reliable livermore still in the top ten, but only these two we talked about at 319. that's the bay's lowest. continuing at the two marathons. the one on holmes and the one on south livermore avenue in livermore, then in san francisco, our low there is 349 in the middle here. take a quick stop at speedway on cesar chavez street, then the bottom number. we'll talk about south bay. the low there is 369. a number of different places. we'll call out cupertino, cupertino, car wash on north de anza boulevard, and you can check wherever you are or wherever you're headed. gasbuddy.com onto the roadways. we have mostly calm drives, but two very serious situations. north 101, just north of the airport, 101 is still closed because of an investigation. turned out there was a pedestrian on the roadway. now it's an investigation for a fatality. so it s should bebout 7:00, i believe, when the

coroner's investigation may be completed. find your alternates. airport boulevard, san mateo avenue will get you past the local streets. 280 will get you well past that scene without any slowing on the freeway itself. then from the east bay, everything seems to be normal except for north of the carquinez bridge, eastbound 80. we heard this earlier crash is now an investigation for a fatality as well. this will counter commute cause slowing through american canyon. back to you. thanks, mike. it is 610 right now negotiating a deal. the a's are long gone. so what's going to happen with the coliseum? coming up next on today in the bay. the debate is set for tonight as ownership for the oakland ballpark remains in limbo. and google announces a super cool new computer. actually, it's super cold out to the futures this morning. we've kind of had a pause on our year end rally. oracle shares under a lot of pressure. mixed market to start. plus stick around because we're going to introduce you to san francisco zoo's newest furry friends. you don't want to miss

trading countries will raise prices for everybody. americans, he said, are beginning to wake up to the reality that tariffs on everything from canada would make life a lot more expensive. i was speaking, in fact, to a manufactururer of arficial christmas trees in redwood city who said, if america goes through with the massive tariffs on materials from mexico and china and canada, they have factories in mexico and china, the cost of your christmas tree is going to go up by a lot. we use equipment. we have some machines that cost millions of dollars and are the size of a football field. like that is not something you can just pick up and you can't even put it on a truck, right? you have to disassemble it like it's a huge investment of millions of dollars. and a factory that makes christmas trees is like a 50 to $100 million investment. and so those are slower to move. now we have actually moved and we have some of ourr production outside of china now in asia. and so that's an investment decision. we made years ago in anticipation of potential tariffs. because we understand,

you know, there are reasons to diversify the supply chain. and we sort of saw where this was going. but we can't do everything there overnight. it's going to take time. i asked mack where was he got all that stuff behind him. he was at the hallmark movie christmas festival in kansas city. he knows my girlfriend likes hallmark movies. he's like, ge on a plane, get over here. you can meet all the hallmark stars. you could be like a lumberjack or something that was. see, that's the problem. i don't want her. my girlfriend. meet the lumberjack who has the puppy. that's because it's just. it's a hallmark movie. all over that guy. i'm that guy. i'd be the one in the big city with the big business. i got very busy. you're right. too busy for your girlfriend. busy? okay, well, you go make time for it right now, but stick around. we might have more for you to do. the magic of christmas starring scott mcgrew all right, i'm tuning in. right. i get my green sweater. okay. 618 for you right now, let's take a live look over at the oakland coliseum and

morning with temperatures below freezing in parts of the bay. and then a frost advisory is in effect for a lot of the inland valleys until 9:00 this morning. and then rain chances increasing, starting on thursday, off and on rain and the return of king tides. here's a live look outside in san jose. this morning as the sun comes up. it's going to be clear for the next several hours at 41 right nonow, and it is going toe very chilly through about 9:00 and then starting to get a little bit better. but we do need some layers for the day as we start out cold. it will be a nice and mild afternoon with mid 60s even upper 60s for the south county. parts of the east bay won't be as warm as it was yesterday due to that central valley tule fog that lingers a little bit longer and that's going to keep those temperatures from rising throughout the next several hours. looking ahead, this is the storm system that's remained off the coast and will start to move in as we go into the day tomorrow, as well as
6:22 am
thursday when the rain begins. so we're starting to see that rain moving closer to the pacific northwest. and it's going to be in and out of here fairly quickly. a brief break before another storm system rolls in. right behind that. and we're going to enter into a very active storm pattern here going into next week with waves of rain in the forecast. even just this weekend, we're looking at the possibility of parts of the north bay. those gray shadings for northern sonoma county. that could be six inches of rainfall. and then for the areas in pink and purple, that's 2 to 3in of rain. san jose could possibly see 1 to 2in of rain, and the sierra is going to get a decent amount of snowfall this weekend with about 1 to 2ft between the weekend and monday. so we're going to start to see things cranking up here. cooler temperatures coming in for those highs and then off and on. rain in the forecast through next week, at least for today. it's still sunny and nice with highs

in the low to mid 60s. mike you've got two traffic alerts. yeah the first one is on the peninsula. heads up. if you're heading to or past sfo 101 is blocked north of 380. all lanes are blocked due to an investigation after a death on the freeway. folks heading to sfo have to get off of the freeway anyway, like everybody else around south san francisco. exit. you can use airport boulevard as your option. getting past the scene, take 280. a much clearer route along the peninsula. the second incident, the alert is eastbound, so getting away from the carquinez bridge on i-80, you have one lane open at american canyon. there's also investigation of a deadly crash there. be careful. back to you. good to know. thanks, mike. 622 right now on the comeback trail up next olympics legend lindsey vonn making her return to competitive skiing. we're going to hear from her. on how she's feeling about her first race in years plus. hey, there it is. day four of the 12 days of christmas snack mix edition, and i give you three bites. i bet you saw these all over your feed over thanksgiving. i know that i

for joining us. i'm laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. we want to start with some breaking news this morning for you. strong winds playing a lot of havoc there overnight in berkeley. in one case, first responders. they say that the redwood tree crashed down into someone's home. take a look at this. this happened on eunice. this is near spruce street. you can see the damage from the front deck there. the tree also clipped the roof of a neighboring home. luckily, no one was injured. elsewhere, a large branch fell on top of a tree. this is a pic fell on top of a pickup truck on mlk way. this is near cedar street. it's also partially blocked that road. first responders are saying that. look, this is a reminder to make sure that your trees are trimmed and in good shape once the arrival of winter comes. also breaking now in southern california, firefighters battling an exploding wildfire near pepperdine college in malibu. these are live. look at the flames right now. an aerial view from our sister station

helicopter. the fire itself started a little before 11:00 last night. and as of this morning, nearly 2000 acres have burned. 6000 people are under mandatory evacuation orders, and pepperdine students are being told to shelter in place with those flames burning dangerously close to campus. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the conditions there for firefighters are also dealing with these santa ana winds that we know can be so strong in that region. yes. so those are the very strong winds that go downslope and kind of funnel through some of the mountains and blow offshore and can create some very explosive fire weather conditions. and that prompted the national weather service to issue a very rare pds red flag warning. that's a particularly dangerous situation where we could see any fires that do start spread so rapidly. and that's what we are seeing now with the franklin fire. this will be in effect until 2:00. those downslope winds may peak at 50 to 80mph. and as of right
6:34 am
now, we are seeing some of those winds gusting in that area. and even at this afternoon from 5:00 to 6:00, we're still looking at some gusty winds. so unfortunately it may make it very hard for them to try to get some containment for that fire that's right there around malibu. as we start out this morning, we are seeing a fairly calm wind, a clear sky, and the temperature right now in san jose is at 41 degrees. it is a cold start and will be a slightly cooler day compared to the past couple of days. we'll talk about the changes coming up. but mike, you're tracking a freeway closure near sfo. that's right. so even though the conditions are calm and fine right now, we've had two major crashes going on this morning. north 101 is still blocked. all lanes are closed just north of 380. that's right near sfo. if you're heading to the to the airport, you can exit at south san francisco exit. use airport boulevard to get to the scene. san mateo avenue will take you past, but 280 is a much clearer

roe if you're heading into the city from the peninsula. meanwhile, heading in through the north bay, away from the carquinez bridge, eastbound 80 does have one lane open through american canyon. there is a deadly crash there as well early morning. and so we have the coroner heading to the scene. should be about another hour until they can clear those eastbound lanes. meanwhile, your commute directions throughout the east bay and north bay looking pretty standard. back to you. thank you very much, mike. it is 634 right now and developing this morning as the ivy league graduate accused of murdering a united health care ceo, brian thompson awaits extradition. surprising new details are emerging about his background, and it includes ties to the bay area. today in the bay's ginger conejero saab joins us live this morning. and ginger, it seems like there's always a bay area tie. i understand he worked here about five years ago. that's right. laura stanford confirms that 26 year old luigi mangione worked as a head counselor in its pre-collegiate studies program back in 2019. now, police are
6:36 am
also saying that he has ties to san francisco, the san francisco standard reporting that his mother reported him missing to sfpd last month. but this morning, authorities are still piecing together more answers. now, police arrested mangione yesterday in altoona, pennsylvania, at a mcdonald's that is about 280 miles west of new w york. he eluded them for almost a week now. officers say he was sitting eating breakfast when an employee spotted him and called authorities and when they asked him if he had recently been to new york, police say he became, quote, quiet and started to shake. they then later discovered a gun and a silencer, similar to the one used in the shooting. they also recovered a handwritten document they believe speaks to his motivation and mindset. mangione is now awaiting extradition from pennsylvania. court records show he is facing five counts, including one count of murder.
6:37 am
now, in a statement, the mangione family says, quote, unfortunately, we cannot comment on news reports regarding luigi mangione. we only know what we have read in the media. our family is shocked and devastated by luigi's arrest. we offer our prayers to the family of brian thompson, and we ask people to pray for all involved. we are devastated by this news now. friends say mangione was the valedictorian at his all boys prep school in baltimore before graduating from the university of pennsylvania with a bachelor's and a master's in computer science. news of mangione's arrest is shocking those who knew him. there was nothing came off weird about him. he had great friends. he had a lot of female friends as well. he was a relatively unassuming kid. he was down to earth. he was smart, well adjusted socially. he was at least a two sport athlete. from what i can remember, and he really had everything going for him. our candace nguyen and our
