murder of unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson. the 26-year-old is in a pennsylvania jail this morning following his arrest at a mcdonald's where an emplee recognized him and tipped off police. >> and the aftermath of his capture, surprising portrait of the suspect has started to emerge from his social media profile and people who knew him. >> we have all of this covered this morning. we will begin with nbc's stephanie gosk. she is at the jail where luigi mangione is currently being held. hey, steph, good morning. >> reporter: hoda and savannah, good morning to you. magione is being held in the prison. up until his arrest yesterday, the nypd said the last time they saw him was in the bus station in new york city. he made his way to pennsylvania from philadelphia to pittsburgh to altoona to yesterday where he was having breakfast. where an employee recognized him and called the police. overnight, manhattan prosecutors filing a murder charge against luigi mangione for last week's

shooting of the unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson, gubed down in the streets of midtown manhattan, as he was visiting for a conference. police launching a multistate manhunt. a senior law enforcement official confirming to nbc news, a handwritten note saying in part, these parasites had it coming was recovered. the 26-year-old suspect was captured monday, recognized by an employee at a mcdonald's in altoona, pennsylvania, five days after the murder and 280 miles away. police say luigi mangione's identity was not on their radar until the sighting. >> no, we did not have his name prior r to today >> officer fry responded with his partner. >> he was wearing a blue medical mask. as soon as we fulled that down, we asked him to pull it down, we -- me and my partner and i recognized him immediately. >> reporter: the arresting officers asked if he had been in new york city recently. >> he became visibly nervous. kind of shaking at that question.

>> reporter: according to a complaint, mangione originally gave police a fake new jersey id, the same one police say was used to book a room at a manhattan hostile. revealing when officers searched his backpack they found a black 3d printed pistol and silencer. he was born and raised in maryland. his last known address in hawaii. he graduated from upenn in 2020 with a masters degree in computer science. the family reacting to the news writing they're shocked and devastated by luigi's ars and extending their prayers to the thompson family. the case sparking global interest and online backlash against the insurance industry. the pennsylvania governor josh shapiro speaking out overnight. >> i understand people have real frustration with our health care system. this killer is being hailed as a hero. hear me on this. he is no hero. the real hero in this story is the person who called 911.

>> reporter: overnight, unitedhealth group the parent company releasing a statement they hope this arrest provides at least some relief for family and friends of ceo brian thompson. as for mangione, his next scheduled court date is december 23rd. back to you guys. >> all right, stephanie gosk. steph, thank you. >> nbc news analyst, former assistant director for counterintelligence at the fbi. frank, it is good to see you. we're starting to see a clearer picture of this suspect. what do you make of it? >> so initially, luigi mangione did not seem to fit the profile of a cold-blooded killer. but as the picture starts to gel and come together, we're seeing what would call an activist killer, an ideology is driving his violence. and we'll learn more about that as this goes on. we're still looking, of course, for that direct connection between mangione and unithealthcare. but as we gather more intel it looks like there may have been

some back surgery. we don't know w if that' connected with the beef he seems to have with the wide health care industry. he's written about it. he's read about it. he'sead the unibomber's manifesto and he's aligned himself with the idea that it's sometimes ethical to murder somebody. >> what do you make -- he was caught with a weapon that was printed on a 3d printer. what do you make of that piece of the puzzle? >> so i'm really using this opportunity to make people more aware of the problem of ghost guns. number one, in answer to your question, this is a young man who really didn't think through fleeing. he made it to altoona, pennsylvania, and then decided to have lunch or breakfast. that's not somebody who had the plan to keep going. was he looking for another target? what's the story there? and with regard to the ghost gun, look a federal violation a state violation. they used that to grab and detain him in pennsylvania. but the problem in our society is those ghost guns are turning up more and more on the scene of violent crimes.

they can't be traced. you can make them on a 3d printer very easily. it's a problem. >> what do you think was the break in this case? it seems once again the public is indispensable. >> oh, for sure. i'm a huge fan of crowd sourcing crime solving these days. i remember way back in my fbi career, we would agonize over the decision to share information with the public. don't agonize anymore. get it out there. that's what broke this case, the video surveillance and the interesting contrast with our high tech forensics and dna, fingerprinting, scuba teams. and what solved this? just putting out a photo of the guy. >> frank, lastly, what do you make of the online kind of empathy for this killer? there's been a lot of talk about that. >> yeah, a couple things. we're all really getting the deep sense that people have horror stories about their insurance. but here's the issue.

corporate security executives who i am in touch with say this is a wake-up call for them and their ceos who are saying, yeah, i didn't want security but now i do. the other concern that developed amongst detectives was, are we chasing a hero? is the public going to help us if they align with him. thank goodness the answer at least for the mcdonald's employees was they were doing the right thing. >> yeah. all right. frank, thank you very much. all right. another major story developing overnight, a dangerous wild fire that suddenly exploded in southern california. the flames fanned by high winds and spreading rapidly, putting thousands of homeowners and a nearby college -- students on high alert at pepperdine. nbc's dana griffin joins us from malibu. what can you tell us? >> reporter: hoda, good morning to you. i can show you what's happening just behind us. we are along the coast. you can see the water out here. and here firefighters are standing by on this hill, as you can see.

there's fire engulfing this part of the canyon. and this is what we've seen all morning. and overnight this fire exploded, doubling and tripling in size at times. this is now dubbed the franklin fire. he has now burned 1,800 acres. there's no containment at this point. but the issue is you have some erratic winds that are whipping up embers. we have had some that have come and landed nearby. and so, this spot is just smoldering, but this is how the fires start. they can overtake a hillside like this. and i want to show you the firefighters that are down below trying to protect these multimillion dollar homes. they are on standby ready to respond if any of those embers blow this way. and off into the distance, you can just see just a smoky, hazy skyline of the malibu coastline. you talked about pepperdine university. we saw several students who were posting videos, hunkered down. they aren a shelter in place, which means they are on that campus. they are all grouped together. and right now officials have

cancelled classes for all of malibu and final exams for pepperdine have been cancelled. and we are just watching this area behind us as we're hearing and seeing the fire erupt all around. hoda? >> dana griffin for us there in malibu. dana, thanks. that brings us to al who is. good morning. >> firefighters are going to really have their work cut out. good morning, everybody. santa ana winds, big, strong, high pressure over the great basin. swinging those winds out of the desert, the dry desert air comes towards the coast. it will pick up at times and the air gets even drier as it comes down out of the hills. dropping the relative humidity 5 to 10% today. and they had very little rain, palm dale, riverside, irvine, just 20% of what they should have. 12 million people at risk. 50 to 80 miles per hour wind gusts. the risk of downed trees, power lines. we have extreme to critical risk for fire damage and these wild fires just cropping up at any moment. guys? >> all right, al. thank you.

to the middle east now, and the upheaval and uncertainty in syria after the sudden collapse of bashar al assad's brutal regime. the country weighs its next steps there's renewed hopes that an american held in syria for ten years could be found and returned home. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in damascus for us. hey, richard. good morning. >> reporter: the sudden collapse of the syrian dictatorship has changed this country and this region profoundly. the entire map of the middle east is now being redrawn by the hour. this morning, israel is using the stunning and swift collapse of syria's dictatorship to take over a buffer zone. new footage shows israeli tanks in the golan heights, a long contested area along israel's northern border with syria. arab states denounced the move as an illegal and provocative land grab. israel says it's temporary. the prime minister benjamin

netanyahu called it necessary. our control of the golan heights guarantees our security. it guarantees our sovereignty, he said. israel is also bombing in syria now, striking heavily in and around damascus. israel says it's targeting military and scientific research facilities to destroy stockpiles of chemical weapons. israel clearly does not trust the new rebel movement that toppled assad and doesn't want it to have the dangerous weapons. the rebel's leader once commanded an al-qaeda faction but split from the group years ago. abu mohammad al jolani is still considered a terrorist by the u.s. and in the turmoil of syria's collapse, the parents of austin tice, a journalist who went missing more than a decade ago say they have renewed hope. >> in chaos, there is opportunity. this is an opportunity.

and it feels stronger than any that we have seen or felt in a long time. >> reporter: thousands of syrians are also searching for their relatives. and this morning, they came to the notorious prison to search. but all they found were nooses used to executive political prisoners in batches. they're describing this as a human press, a torture device that prisoners, like this man is demonstrating here, would be put on this slab and then crushed in order to torture them. in another torture room, this woman showed me a photo of her son missing for more than ten years. he was sentenced for being a militant. my son was a nurse, she says. despite all their searching, families got few answers. no prisoners were found alive. this is one of the most brutal prisons i have ever seen. now it is being exposed to the world in all of its horror. >> richard engel for us there in damascus. richard, thank you. much more to get to this

in san francisco, where emerging details tie the city and the bay area to the man accused of murdering unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson. stanford confirms 26 year old luigi mangione worked there as a head counselor in its pre-collegiate studies program five years ago. the standard is also reporting his mother reported him missing to sfpd last month. police arrested mangione at a mcdonald's in altoona, pennsylvania. court records show he is facing five counts, including one count of murder. strong winds toppled trees overnight in berkeley. in one case, first responders say a redwood tree crashed down into someone's home. it happened on eunice near spruce street. there was damage to the front deck. the tree also clipped the roof of a neighboring home. luckily, no one was injured. elsewhere, a large branch fell on top of a pickup truck on mlk. mlk way near cedar street. it also partially blocked the road. first responders are calling it a reminder to make sure your trees are trimmed and in good

he was an ivy league graduate who had a long trail of provocative social media posts. overnight in new york, luigi mangione was charged with murder in the death of unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson. it comes after a multi-day manhunt led police to altoona, pennsylvania. where mangione was taken into custody. authorities finding three pages of writings which say in part, frankly, these parasites had it comes. a senior law enforcement briefed on the investigation, confirms to nbc news. the writing also include a line that says, i do apologize for any strife or traumas, but it had to be done, the official said. now more background on the suspect's past emerging. his family carving financial and political footprints in baltimore where ththey own t golf clubs. and his cousin nino mangione is a republican state legislature. >> thank you for coming. >> luigi mangione attended the private all boys school in baltimore where he was class

valedictorian in 2016. mangione was also ivy league educated, the university of pennsylvania confirming he earned a bachelors degree and a masters in engineering. investigators say they're doing a complete scrub of mangione's online posts, including good reads where he quoted this take of the unabomber. when all other forms of communication fail, violence is necessary to survive. mangione calling it interesting. and a post elsewhere of an x-ray of a back, two senior law enforcement officials tell nbc news investigators are looking into whether it belongs to mangione and whether it has anything to do with the crime. his last known address was in honolulu, a friend from hawaii told cnn mangione struggled with back pain. >> he confirmed that he had had surgery and sent me the x-rays. it looked heinous. >> reporter: another friend telling "the times" mangione's family said they had not heard from him several months after the surgery. a friend from college telling nbc he's struck.

welcome back. this morning on "today's holiday consumer," a firsthand look at how shipping companies are working around the clock to get your packages delivered. >> lofts lots of packages, too. nbc's vicky nguyen just got back from the largest ups hub here in the northeast. i bet that was quite the scene. >> it is always amazing to be inside of these warehouses where all the magic is happening. and good morning to you. if you are feeling the time crunch, it is not your imagination. this holiday shopping season is shorter by five full days. that means the deadline to get your packages under the tree also condensed this year. we're already seeing a record of sales. here is an inside look of what it takes to keep up with all that demand. >> reporter: through every twist and turn, this is the kind of well-crafted maze your holiday package navigates before landing under the christmas here.

i'm here in new jersey at a u.p.s. hub where they are gearing up for their busiest time of year. with me is the hub manager. jack o'neal. so, jack, what is happening in this facility right now? >> you're seeing automation help u.p.s. deliver packages with speed and agility here. in this facility alone, we have the capacity to process 60,000 packages per hour and over 800,000 packages a day. >> reporter: the warehouse operates 24/7. trucks filled with packages are unloaded on to conveyer belts. the shipping labels are scanned by a camera tunnel that sets each parcel on to a pre-determined course based on its final destination. >> as it passes through that camera tunnel,t is going to read the weight and the dimension of the package. and then it will come across this sorter and the camera in this system has already given it sort instructions based on the destination of the package. >> that's why i'm seeing some of these packages being shifted down different chutes. >> that's correct. >> how bad is it when someone has extra labels on the box? >> it does impact the automation, but that's why we

still have our people. and our people are our greatest assets. >> reporter: employees like trayvon, whose job it to remove any smaller packages from the conveyer belts. >> so those small boxes are okay? >> yes. >> okay. but these are already in a tote, so it's all good. it's happening so fast. helping trayvon behind the scenes is a team of supervisors in a control room who monitor 600 cameras to make sure no packages get left behind. >> what are your supervisors specifically looking for on all of these cameras? >> they're making sure the package flow is going to thehe right destination. and they're switching destinations from time to time. they're changing the belt speeds and the direction of the package flow. >> reporter: the team effort helps parcels move down to the straight line singulator system. here humans work alongside the automation to move the packages into a single-file line. >> so each of these chutes is going to a different zip code. >> that's correct. >> reporter: when you get enough packages for one zip code, the

person takes the bag, seals it up. >> exactly. and sends it on its way. >> reporter: to make sure your packages get to the correct destination safely, u.p.s. says pay attention to two key areas. how you package your item and the shipg label. francesca is an assistant manager at u.p.s. and she showed me her best practices. what is the number one mistake people make when they're trying to pack their items to ship them? >> i think the box selection. we're looking for something preferably new and adequate material inside for protection and safety of your items. >> so if you are packing something like a glass candle, for example, like a couple pieces of packing paper, that's not going to be enough? >> no. we like the bubble wrap. two inches all around. when it comes to the boxes, we don't recommend masking tape or duct tape. three-inch packing tape. and we make like an h. so we're coffering all our seams. >> reporter: when t comes to labels, u.p.s. says double check your shipping address, especially the zip code. if you are reusing a box, make sure to remove any old labels. >> so we have the packing material. we have the tape. we have the box. we have the label.

sponsor at walmart. chef danielle, good to see you. >> good morning and happy holidays. >> you as well. so a ginger bread cake. >> it is great for dessert or breakfast or a holiday brunch. >> it's a lovely centerpiece. >> it is. >> so we'll start off -- you're using cake flour. >> cake flour. >> what's the difference between cake flour and regular flour. >> regular all pour, it has less gluten content will result in a softer, fluffier cake and i also use it in my cookies sometimes to make it soft and chewy. we'll talk about that later. >> what dry ingredients? >> lots of warm spices. we need ginger and cinnamon and nutmeg and all spice and clove and already it smells like the holidays. >> it really does. >> we have fine table salt. need to let those tables pop. levening agent to let everything rise. we want butter to be room temperature. we will add our sugar. brown sugar, white sugar.

>> why do you combine the two? >> we really need these two get nice and light and fluffy. and allow that sugar to just kind of break down and dissolve a little bit. and the fat. or else you'll have a tougher cake. >> hoda and craig are on a little dessert gig. >> we're just enjoying. >> so romantic. >> we'll be joining you eventually. >> we're adding our vanilla extract. we always want to add our extract with the fat. it actually makes the flavors more pronounced. >> pro tip there. >> and some orange extract. we always want an acid, even when we're baking. the acid really elevates flavors and also orange with those warm spices just, to me, tastes like the holidays. >> i notice you have the egg whites and the egg yolks separated. >> yes. we have actually whole eggs and egg whites which i'll explain in a second. first, more fat. little more oil. >> more fat. >> because it's going to make it more moist. then we have molassas.

>> i like the good old grandma's mo-lassass it's called. it's not as dark. if it's a black strap, little too bitter. this is nice and balanced. we have whole eggs and extra egg whites. >> why? >> because it gives the cake a little more lift and also when you're using a more intricate bunt pan, it keeps the structure of the cake better so it will come out better later. >> what else? >> now we have to alternate our wet ingredients with our dry ingredients. we have butter milk to make for a fluffier, lighter cake and bring acid to elevate the flavor. and we're alternating with the dry mix. >> and a little orange juice to really brighten up the flavors again. >> all right. >> now we have our bunt pan. we have to really butter and flour this pan so that it really releases. and then once we bake it, we can let it cool completely. our batter is ready. we're going to keep going.

to our frosting. tastes like christmas. and this is a fun tip. if you want to really white, thick, snowy glaze, start with confectioner sugar, little oil, drop of vanilla extract for flavor and now add water just until it's like a thick paste. you don't want it pourable actually. you want it really, really thick where it seems -- yep. you'll see what happens. put it in a piping bag. go around the top. >> yeah. >> and keep going. want to give it a try. >> sure. >> keep going in the center. what we'll do is we'll tap the pan and it will just slightly. >> ooze off the edges. wait, what? >> not too much where it's swimming around the plate. we want that snowy finish for the holidays. just tapt and you'll see. it's probably better to tap this. >> just a couple minutes. it will start to just spread and
