york. in a chaotic scene before today's extradition hearing -- you hear it there -- luigi mangione shouted. last night, he was officially charged with murdering brian thompson in new york city. he is facing separate charges in pennsylvania. >> the 26-year-old was arrested at a mcdonald's in altoona, pennsylvania. police there released these photos taken from an offir's body camera. he began to shake when they asked if he had recently been to new york. new york city's police commissioner said despite getting hundreds of tips, his name was not on their radar. joining us now is tom winter and

ny sovalo >> there's going to be a legal fight in court for him to come back to new york. they will have to present evidence why he should be removed to new york to face those homicide charges in connection with the death of brian thompson. the most simplistic terms, he will be held without bail. that outburst, we have a team on the ground. they reviewed the tape. they were there when he said it. what they say he said is, it is completely out of touch and -- excuse me. it is completely out of touch and is an insult to the american people in their lived experience. what that is referring to, to your point, we don't know. that's what he said. he was flanked by seven officers. there were no other outbursts according to our team there. >> how surprising is this to see an extradition court hearing so quickly in a case like this?

pick up on what tom was describing, what happens now since he is facing the two separate charges in new york and pennsylvania? >> pennsylvania procedure, extradition law requires he be brought to a pennsylvania judge. really, extradition is governed by the governor, governor shapiro. the governor will issue a warrant, an extradition warrant. he will deliver that. he will be transported to the requesting state. he is allowed time to file a habeas petition. i can tell you, he will lose. the law requires that governor shapiro turn him over to the requesting state. one winkle that isn't going to happen. in the situation where pennsylvania has its own charges, which it does, felony two forgery, they could keep him because they got him first. whoever has the guy can prosecute. that's never going to happen. governor shapiro will turn him over and strangely enough, he is

theoretically entitled to bail but not if he is charged with a crime that has a life or death penalty. that's why his bail was denied. people in extradition hearings with entitled to bail in pennsylvania. >> as this continues to play out, we are trying to understand a motive. what have we learned? >> we have new reporting. this reflects the work of myself and my colleagues. it's a little early in this investigation, as yowould imagine. what we are starting to circle is that investigators are looking into whether the targeting of the ceo was the culmination of his troubles and list of grievances that the murder was a symbolic takedown in a fight against corporations in this country. that's what we are hearing from several law enforcement owe fishes who have been briefed on the investigation. that tracks. that tracks with some of the statements that he had in his writings and some of the things that we have been reporting on, this tone towards big

corporations, the health care system and unitedhealthcare specifically. >> how difficult will it be to defend him in a court? >> it's tough to forecast this. there are a couple avenues that are a bad idea to try. do not try the whole put the insurance industry on trial defense. that probably won't be allowed at the trial. to some etch xtent, there appea be people who see this as a possible who done it. they compare pictures from the hostile to the pictures of his mug shot and saying, that might not be the same game. probably not a viable defense because believe me, the prosecution will have a lot more than pictures to compare it to. i expect we don't fully know the full extent of the evidence that the government has amassed so far. we will see that if this case goes to trial. >> thank you both. the murder of the unitedhealthcare ceo has sparked

support for the killer online. >> that includes merchandise. nbc news has found listings for items, including t-shirts, mugs and stickers being sold in support of him online. valerie castro joins us now. valerie, for most of us, this is abhorrent. can you describe what's for sale and how are retailers reacting? >> reporter: most of the merchandise that we have en have been around the words deny, defend and depose. those were on the shell casings found at the scene. as you mentioned, t-shirts, mugs, bumper stickers, have all been emblazoned with those words. etsy earlier this afternoon and i found a sweatshirt and ornaments and friendship bracelets. those beaded bracelets, those

were being sold. most of the online retailers, they prohibit items that glorify violence. ebay did issue a statement around this exact issue saying -- we did reach out to other retailers. they have not gotten back to us. >> valerie, beyond merchandise, there's a lot of chatter in the comment sections online. people seemingly celebrating the murder of this ceo. how concerned is law enforcement about this discourse and behavior? >> reporter: the biggest concern from law enforcement is any copycat violence. actually just today, the altoona police department were the suspect was taken into custody said they have been receiving threats there. the deputy chief calling this a very polarizing case.

there is a security and risk management company that nbc has spoken to. they tell us that there have been an increase in violence ad threats towards health care companies. they expect that to continue. >> thanks so much. in idaho, one of the strictest abortion bans is back in the spotlight today. >> a federal appeals court is expected to hear arguments on whether a federal law overrides the state's near total ban of the procedure, the biden administration sued the state arguing the law violates the emergency medical treatment and labor act which requires doctors provide care to patients in emergency medical situations. >> laura jarrett joins us now. idaho officials argue their abortion ban doesn't violate federal law because it has the exception for procedure if it's necessary to save the life of a pregnant person. what's at issue here legally?

could the decision here in idaho affect other states? >> absolutely. at least six other states which have similar laws on the books right now. the real conflict is, what if there's care not to save a woman's life but her health and things could quickly deteriorate? you think about an infection, something like sepsis. maybe you are not going to die in the moment, but if you allow it to go on, the patients -- this is not a workable standard. it can't only be to save the woman's life. that's the conflict. that's the rub in this case. >> it comes on the heels of another case in idaho invoing four women. one of whom you spoke with. in part, what they are saying they were denied abortions in emergency medical situations. >> same thing. somebody isn't on death's door but has a condition which affects their life or reproductive function. >> i imagine the outcome of this case could impact theirs. >> it could. we will see how they write it in this case. it's worth mentioning -- you mentioned the biden

says he sustained a cut to his face and sprained his wrist. he is clear to resume his schedule. there has been focus on the health of the senate leader from kentucky in recent years. he missed an extended period of time catol after falling at a political event at the beginning of last year. we are following more breaking news on capitol hill. the republican-led house task force has just released its final report on the first assassination attempt on president-elect trump this past summer. let's get to ali vitali. we just got this report. what doeit reveal? >> reporter: this is after months of investigation by a bipartisan task force here on capitol hill. they have come away with a few dozen recommendations, both for the secret service and then also other things that the legislative branch, congress, can undertake in the future when it comes to the secret service and the people that it protects. some of the recommendations are not going to be shocking, especially if you listen to any of the explanations around what

happened, both at the assassination attempt in butler, pennsylvania, but also the attempted assassination at one of trump's golf courses in west palm beach, florida. this task force was investigating both of the events. of course, they treated butler, pennsylvania, differently, given the fact it was an instance where the former president of the united states was actually shot at. some of the recommendations that they make include things like going forward the secret service should make sure all entities involved with the planning of security for an event should be present when they go through the plans. they recommend that secret service should record some of the communications. then there are larger questions that are posed in this report where they ask if the secret service should remain housed under the u.s. homeland security agency. that would be a change in who commands the secret service from the top down. then there are bigger questions around how they plan things and the way that congress is able to give them more funding. there are certainly questions about if the secret service not

just has enough money to operate but has enough money to provide futurehiring and really generate more manpower. when they are stretched thin, much like they were last summer, they are able to rise to meet that challenge. you will remember that one of the challenges the secret service was experiencing during the waning months of this year was the fact that they are responsible for protecting leaders who are coming to the united states. that's also a question that this task force poses should that be the pose of the secret service. >> a lot in there. ali, thank you. to a rapidly growing wildfire in malibu forcing evacuations. >> the franklin fire has burned more than 2,500 acres in less than 24 hours. strong winds and dry conditions are fuelling the explosive flames. a shelter in place order at pepperdine university was lifted earlier today. this is video of the fire taken from inside the school's library. looking out the window.

pepperdine says power is out across most of the campus. >> following this is liz kreutz in malibu. we got an update from the fire department earlier today. what did they say? >> reporter: wellll, 's 2,600 acres. 0% contained. the big question is, what are the s going to do? it does feel like the winds have subsided a little bit from earlier this morning. certainly, from overnight. it's the santa ana winds. some got as high as 80 miles per hour that fuelled this fire. folks had to get out at a moment's notice late last night around midnight, rushing to get out. behind me here, this is the pacific coast highway. the fire is pretty much burning up in these hills here and the homes here. you can see the smoke. on and off, the smoke will die down and flare up again. we see a flare from the spot fires. there's more than 800

taking a shorter morning break. now you may look into that and say those 12 men and women are working hard to get a consensus because you'll remember they will need to be unanimous in their decision. i previously spoke with legal expert steven clark, who describes the deliberation process as stair step jurors will not move to the lower charges until they reach a verdict on the murder. charge in this case is charged with first degree murder. now, prosecutors argue that he attacked and killed lee in a drug fueled rage after learning his sister's allegations of sexual assault against a man that bob lee knew. defense attorneys say it was lee that lunged at momeni and fatally stabbed him self defense. now, jurors must unanimously agree whether or not is guilty of first or second degree murder, they cannot return a guilty verdi on manslaughter, for example, unless they are unanimous in a not guilty verdict on murder.

schools with a drop. many schools are blaming the upgraded fafsa roll out last spring. you might recall it had technical issues and caused a lot of delays in processing for hundreds of thousands of hopeful students. the lights on the bay bridge are coming back. workers began installing 50,000 led lights on theestern side of the bridge. the nonprofit illuminate first put up the lights on the bridge ten years ago, but then they went dark last march because of a funding issue. the nonprofit was able to get enough donors to bring the lights back, but still, you have to wait till next year for the installation to be completely back up and running. billie eilish is kicking off her two night stay at sap in san jose tonight. caltrans says a special billy carill depart from san francisco this evening to san jose, where riders can win free merchandise along the way, and sap says it will make its menu fully vegan and vegetarian. like billie eilish's diet. that billy

undergone emergency surgery to address a brain eed. he is doing well after a successful operation. earlier, he had a fall in his home that left a cut on his head. doctors believe the two incidents are related. in syria, rebel alliances have named an interim prime minister to lead the country after the fall of the assad regime. >> rebels promised a more moderate and inclusive government. while there are still celebrations in the streets, many in the country and the wider region are bracing for what comes next. >> since the rebels assumed power over the weekend, israel conducted hundreds of air strikes across syria to destroy what israeli officials say are strategic capabilities that threaten israel's security. let's get to matt bradley. he is in damascus. what are hearing from people? there was celebration for a while. is there a sense of unease? >> reporter: there's a ton of celebration here in damascus.

in fact, being around this hotel, we haven't been leaving at night because there's a curfew in place from sun down t sunup. you can hear people shooting in the air. there's a lot of enthusiasm here for what happened. then this morning, earlier we were driving up from beirut to damascus. we were crossing through the border. we met a lot of people, hundreds of them who were fleeing. they didn't say they were fleeing, but they were fleeing from syria into lebanon. some of them said that they were affiliated with the former regime and they were uncertain about the future. they were worried about reprisal or retaliation from the rebels and from other people within syria. others were ethnic or religious minorities. i spoke with a family of four who said they were shiite muslims. the rebel group that took over here, unseated the gornment, they are sunni islamist who are historically opposed to shiites. they have fought conflicts

particularly here in syria and in lebanon. i spoke with this family and they said, we are not necessarily worried that the government is going to discriminate or persecute us. we are worried about our community that they could turn against us. that's the atmosphere we are talking about. it's not just a dawn for freedom here in syria. there's also a lot of worries that this new government could be just as intolerant as possibly just as violent as the previous regime. >> matt, briefly as we mentioned, israel has conducted hundreds of air strikes across syria since the assad regime fell this weekend. we know israeli ground forces have advanced beyond a demilitarized zone along the border. row mind us of the significance of those moves. >> reporter: this is a really big issue because we are hearing condemnation from around the world. israel has scandalized much of the world with its actions in southern lebanon and in the gaza strip over the past year.

now it looks as though they could be opening up another front in syria, despite the fact that the regime of bashar al assad, backed by iran, has since fallen. this is something that's attracting so much criticism. it looks to be a destabilizing factor. the israelis said this is only a temporary incursion, they are trying to neutralize some of the dangerous weapons the regime of bashar al assad held, including chemical weapons and missiles. we saw just earlier today , the israelis struck a port. essentially destroyed a fleet of syrian naval vessels. that's a major escalation against a country that barely even exists anymore. this is something that a lot of people throughout the middle east are saying looks like a land grab on israel's part. something israel denies. >> matt bradley in da mascus, stay safe. when you think of

concussions, you may associate them with football or the battlefield. in the past decade, there's been an effort to raise awareness about the dangers of head injuri. for survivors of domestic violence, their injuries often go undiagnosed and untreated. now at west virginia university's rockefeller neuroscience institute, they are working to change that. tua says he will be returning to the field after suffering the third concussion. >> from high school football to the nfl, there are strict guidelines for head injuries. for survivors of domestic violence, there are not. >> domestic violence survivors do not have a concussion protocol. they don't have thib anybody to to. it's never safe for them. >> good morning. >> this doctor runs the

concussion and brain injury center at wvu's rockefeller neuroscience institute. this is one of his parent tient. she was in an abusive marriage for 11 years. how many times were you hit in the head? >> i lost day. >> one day he attacked her in the bathroom. >> my body slamd against the wall. i slid down to the floor between the commode and the k. i was laying on the floor. he come down and grabbed my arms and started to shake me. my head hit again. i remember i tried to focus on my boys, because i could hear them outside that door. i still hear their voice today crying, don't hurt mama. >> if makes me want to cry. >> i still hear that sound

but she will have a better quality of life. she's remarried now. her sons are doing well. she hopes more hospitals will develop programs like this one. >> when they have a domestic violence victim come into the hospital or their practice, i want them to go about it, their care, with the same dedication that they would if that person had a helmet and pads on when they were wheeled into the hospital. >> wow. thank you. that woman who shared her story told you she wants others to know what to look out for. >> to know the symptoms. if you have headaches, if you have vision changes and you are a survivor of domestic violence, trouble focusing, sleep problems, behavior change, anxiety, depression, ptsd, any of that, see your primary care doctor. you may need to see a neurologist or specialist as well. the doctor made the point to us that even if somebody seeks treatment years after an injury, it's not too late. you can still at least catch up a little bit and feel better.

u.p.s. control room who monitor 600 cameras. >> we got a text message. >> reporter: what are you supervising? >> making sure the package flow is going to the right destination. they are switching destinations from time to time. they are changing belt speeds and direction of the package flow. >> reporter: the team effort helps them move down to the straight line sing ooh later system. humans work alongside the automation to move them into a single file line. each of these chutes is going to a different zip code? >> that's correct. >> when you get enough for one, the person takes the bag and seals it up? >> exactly. >> reporter: to make sure your packages get to the correct destination safely, u.p.s. says pay attention to two key areas. how you package your items and the shipping label. this woman is an assistant manager. she showed me best practices. what's the number one mistake people make? >> i think the box selection.

thanksgiving holiday, and many airline passengers were winding up with unexpected expenses. so consumer investigator chris karma shows us how to apply for reimbursement. if you think an airline owes you money, the first thing you should do is obvious, but i'm going to say it anyway. you should save your receipts. next, check the federal government's airline customer service dashboard. it's online at flight rights.gov. the dashboard lists carrier by carrier what each airline offers or doesn't offer. the reason for a delay or cancellation matters. airlines don't cover expenses for things that are beyond their

control, like weather, but they can cover things like maintenance issues and it meltdowns on the dashboard. each airline name is a link to its full policy. we follow the united link and found it's pretty clear, for example, when controllable delays or cancellations go overnight, united's policy says it will offer you a free hotel. or if you have to book one yourself, you can subt your receipt to our customer care team and will reimburse you for reasonable hotel costs. if you want to file for reimbursement, do so fast. while the airline's records are still fresh, include your confirmation code, ticket number, or boarding pass. if you write a letter, be succinct and stick to the facts. then share your receipts. expect a reply within a couple of weeks. although no airline offers cash compensation when it inconveniences passengers, many do offer an olive branch in the form of airline miles or vouchers. a future free flight might make a sour travel experience a little less bitter.
