healthcare ceo, 26-year-old luigi mangione, shouting at cameras as he arrived for his extradition hearing in pennsylvania yesterday. mangione was denied bail and is now fighting extradition to new york. new york governor kathy hochul will sign a request for a governor's warrant to ensure mangione is tried and held accountable. for more, let's turn to stephanie gosk. >> reporter: allege the murder, luigi mangione shouting at cameras outside court. >> -- the intelligence of the american people! >> reporter: the 26-year-old's defense attorney told the nnsylvania judge his client will fight extradition back to new york city. >> we haven't gotten any evidence. haven't seen anything really yet. >> reporter: mangione is charged with gunning down brian thompson in manhattan. the extradition hearing ing

place 24 hours after the arrest at an mcdonald's in altoona. this man saw him eating breakfast before police were called. >> i kept thinking about it all day yesterday. how can that be, you know? here we are this little town. >> reporter: one of the arresting officers only six months on the job. >> he was wearing a blue medical mask. as soon as we asked him to pull it down, me and my partner and i recognized him immediately. >> reporter: then they asked him if he had been in new york city recently. >> that really invokes a physical reaction from the suspect. he became physically nervous, shaking at that question. >> reporter: according to police, mangiony had a 3d printed weapon, similar to the one used in the shooting, fake i.d.s and three pages of hand written notes. >> you see anti-corporatist sentiment. a lot of issues with the healthcare industry. but, as to, like, particular specific motives, that will come

out as this investigation continues to unfold. >> reporter: saying in part, frankly, these parasites had it coming. to save you a lengthy investigation, i state plainly i wasn't working with anyone. there's no indication at this point that mangione was working with anyone, but they have not ruled it out. he also said i do apologize for any strife or traumas, but it had to be done. after reviewing hundreds of hours of video footage and even using dive teams in a pond in central park, it was this photo, the grinning suspect checking into a hostel in new york city that was critical to breaking the case. up until the arrest, police had not identified him. >> he had been working this hard

for five days and gotten hundreds of tips to our tip lines, but this was not a name that was called in to us. >> reporter: the mangione family releasing a short statement saying in part, we only know what we have read in the media. our family is shocked and devastated by luigi's arrest. >> thank you. now to florida where the suspect accused of trying to assassinate donald trump has a court hearing today. ryan routh who was arrested outside mr. trump's golf course has asked for his february trial date to be pushed back to next december. his defense team says they need more time to go over the discovery in this case, which includes data from 18 phones and three computers, they will make their case at today's status hearing. chris pollone joins me now. we're also learning more about the other assassination attempt, that deadly shooting in pennsylvania. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, frances. good morning to you. the house task force that was investigating these attempts finally released its final report. it's a 180-page report that

found that the shooting in butler, pennsylvania, which wounded donald trump and killed one of his supporters was preventible. they said there were various failures in planning, execution and leadership which exposed everyone at that event to grave danger. the panel also gave dozens of recommendations to the secret service, including adding more staffing, providing more robust training, scaling back the protection of foreign leaders to focus on top u.s. officials and recording all radio transmissions, which is something that did not happen in butler. the acting director of the secret service was questioned by the task force earlier this month. ronald rowe promised accountability for what he called an abject failure by the agency to secure that campaign rally. rowe says the agency is putting a much stronger emphasis on training and doing more regular reviews. in october, rowe said the agency was developing a plan to fundamentally transform the service, including modernizing their technology and building a training plant.

now president-elect trump has not yet named his nominee for the next secret service director, frances. >> okay, we'll wait for that, chris, thank you. today local officials in new jersey will be holding a meeting on the drone mystery after numerous drones have been buzzing over the garden state in at least eight counties since before thanksgiving. gadi schwartz has more. >> reporter: in the skies above the east, reports of mysterious drones. >> look. there's one there, one there. >> reporter: turning into thousands of posts going viral online, with people from coast-to-coast now spending a lot more time looking up and pointing their cameras into the night. >> there's more over there, look. >> reporter: some could be optical illusions, planes that seem closer than they are. >> you can hear that one. that is definitely a plane. >> reporter: but others have defied normal explanations. >> what the [ bleep ]. >> reporter: car-sized drones

orders or evacuation warnings. residents described the fast-moving fire encroaching on their homes. >> the smoke was so, so thick and everything was orange, orange, orange. and the wind picked up. and the wind was flying embers everywhere. >> at least seven structures have been destroyed and eight others damaged. more than 1500 firefighters are assigned to that fire. let's turn to nbc meteorologist angie lassman. soow was the forecast looking? will the firefighters get any help from the weather? >> this morning not a whole lot of improvements. by later today we will see additional improvements when it comes to the weather that is going to help the firefighters tackle that. 9 million people under the red flag warnings. those are going to stay in place even through this evening as conditions improve. we'll still be dealing with low humidity levels and gusty winds.

of washington on the grounds it would reduce competition. now this puts on hold what would have been the biggest grocery store tie up in u.s. history. kroger and albertson's said it would allow them to better compete with the likes of walmart and amazon, but the federal trade commission said that it would block the deal if part of its wider anti-trust clamp down, saying the verdict was a major victory for consumers and would protect them from higher grocery prices. kroger and albertson's said they were disappointed with the ruling and will reconsider their options. the case moves to the ftc. and president-elect donald trump yesterday appointed andrew ferguson to take over as chief of the ftc. we'll wait no see what his view will be on such mega mergers having forward. back to you. >> karen, thank you.
