he was led outside in handcuffs. >> the judge denying the 26-year-old bail and his lawyer is set to fight extradition to new york. meantime, officials are starting to piece together a possible motive. d friends are revealing more about his surprising background. >> we've got all the latest developments covered. so starting this morning with stephanie gosk on the story for us again. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. well, any expectation that luigi mangione will be back in new york city to fight these charges quickly is gone. his defense attorney telling the judge here at this courthouse that they would be fighting extradition while his client sat there calm, relaxed and even quiet at times and smiling, a far cry from how he went in. 26-year-old luigi mangione resisting sheriffs deputies as he entered the courthouse in pennsylvania yesterday shouting at cameras. >> it's completely out of touch and an insult to the intelligence of the american

people. >> reporter: he is charged with murdering brian thompson in midtown manhattan in a brazen shooting that sparked a days' long manhunt. his attorney says they will fight efforts to extradite him to new york, potentially slowing down the process for weeks. >> for the record, he's pleading not guilty to this. i have seen zero evidence at this point. >> reporter: these new photos released by local police show the moments before officers detained the alleged murderer. and now more background on the suspect's possible thinking emerging. in an internal nypd analysis, investigators are looking into whether luigi mangione had grievances against the health care industry, possible seeing the killing as a, quote, symbolic takedown" in a fight against corporate power games. police say mangione was carrying a three-page handwritten documents. three senior law officials say the notes were critical of the health care system in the u.s. and specifically unitedhealthcare.

writing in part, i do apologize for any strife or dramas, but it has to be done. luigi mangione acted alone, but while there is no indication he had help, they are not ruling out the possibly. the nypd also warning of copy cats. mangione has seen support online with many expressing frustration with the health care industry. officials have been pushing back and urging calm. >> this guy is not a hero. he is not a hero. if you have issues with somebody, we don't go out there and commit violence. this guy committed cold-blooded murder. >> reporter: investigators are still looking very closely at that 3d printed weapon that he had. they're trying to determine whether luigi mangione built the gun himself or got it from somebody else, savannah. >> stephanie, thank you very much. as this case moves forward, we're learning more about his

background, including the health issues he faced. >> hoda. good morning. according to the owner, luigi mangione suffered from debilitating pain that he says affected everything that he did. he said mangione came to hawaii to live a healthier life, but his time there might provide a window into how that pain could be connected to a crime. luigi mangione is sitting in a pennsylvania jail cell this morning. but before his arrest in altoona monday, his most recent address was in hawaii. that's where rj met him in 2002 20 -- 2022, when he interviewed him for a spot at his living community. luigi mangione spearheaded a book club and wanted to surf but ran into roadblocks because of intense back pain. he said at points the maryland native had a hard time sitting up saight and struggled to have intimate relationships. what did you know about the condition of his back? >> i knew it was something that constantly weighed on him and it was something that impeded him from doing many things.

>> reporter: an archived version of his reddit account writing he had sciatica and low back pain, also posting about brain fog. in 2018 writing, it is absolutely brutal to have such a life-halting issue that wears down the critical mind, adding that others don't understand his symptoms. martin last checked in on his friend nine months ago and found out he had undergone back surgery with the 26-year-old sending him an x-ray. >> it broke my heart to know he had these three-inch screws in his spine. >> reporter: those that knew him reacting. >> i just remember him as him always being a kind, well-liked person. i just can't imagine what drove him to this. >> reporter: many who knew him expressing surprise not only at the charges but how it could take five-plus days for his capture with such an extensive network of friends nationwide and a family with a significant public profile. yet, it took a stranger to id him at a mcdonald's. >> is this a name you saw anywhere prior to this arrest

yesterday? >> it is not. and we have been working this hard for five days and gotten hundreds of tips to our tip lines, but this was not a name that was called into us. >> reporter: now many in luigi mangione's life left with lots of questions but few answers. >> he was such a bright person. he had everything going for him. he was the kind of person that you would know is going to do great things. >> reporter: so in all of their conversations, martin said he never heard mangione complain about the health insurance industry and was not aware of any medications he may have been taking for that pain. mangione's decision to have the back surgery, he says, appeared to be years in the making. >> all right, sam. sam brock for us. sam, thank you. savannah, over to you. this morning, hoda, crews in southern california working around the clock to battle a wild fire.

it is tearing through malibu this morning causing panic on college campuses and forcing thousands to evacuate, including some celebrities who call the area home. dana griffin in malibu with the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: hi, savannah. good morning to you. overnight the santa ana wind gusts picked up once again. seven homes destroyed. there are 1,500 firefighters working around the clock to bring this destructive wildfire under control. overnight, the franklin fire exploding in size, growing to more than 3,000 acres racing down hillsides, crossing the pacific coast highway and putting fire crews to the test. the fire gusting up to 65 miles an hour. the blaze shining so brightly along the coast it can be seen in this satellite image. as the flames raced down bone dry canyons early tuesday, thousands of residents in the area forced to flee. >> the wind is coming straight down malibu canyon like a blowtorch.

>> just fire everywhere around us. >> reporter: linda michelle said she had just minutes to escape. flames destroying the guest house where she lived but sparing horses on the property. >> the smoke was so thick and just like all that, all, everything was just orange, orange, orange. >> reporter: multimillion dollar homes in jeopardy. some already burned to the ground. some residents like alec taking matters into their own hands in an effort to save homes. >> the houses can go like dominos. so one goes, another can go and it starts with the spot fires and someone has to be there to put them out. >> reporter: celebrities, including cheer and dick van dyke among the evacuees. to tackle this flame, two helicopters are landing at pepperdine university, collecting water to take it to the fire. the pepperdine campus narrowly escaping disaster, students forced to shelter in place in a

flame resistant structure. but this morning the combination of low humidity, high winds and lots of potential crew is keeping crews and homeowners on high alert. those santa ana winds are expected to die down today, replaced by a strong onshore breeze coming off the ocean, and that should bring much needed humidity. today all malibu schools will remain closed again. >> thank you. let's bring in al. he's tracking that fire danger, the storms here in the east. they need water out there. >> sure do. from santa clarita to riverside to pine valley, they have an elevated risk for fire. as dana just mentioned, the gusty winds will start to die down and we will see more of an increase in the humidity. here in the east, 11 million people in new england under

flood alerts. wind alerts up and down the eastern seaboard. you can see this mess all along the cold front pushing in here. it will bring in heavy rain, wind, slow travel for the entire east coast, i-95 corridor, isolated flash flooding. tomorrow behind this, heavy snow bands of lake effect snow on the eastern side of the great lakes. eight million people from winter storm warnings, lake-effect storm warnings as well as that snow comes across. some places between erie and buffalo could see three more feet of snow. river and flash flooding likely from portland to philadelphia with rainfall amounts anywhere from two to four inches in some isolated sections. and then we've got wind warnings. 32 million people impacted along this. wind gusts of up to 50 miles an hour and airport delays stretching from boston, new york, down to d.c. some slower delays out into detroit. guys? >> all right, al. thank you so much. got a lot more to get to. we welcome craig to the table.

good morning. >> good morning. good morning to you as well. let's turn to the latest on the trump transition and a scramble playing out on capitol hill right now for some of trump's cabinet picks. on tap today a new round of high stakes meetings with senators who will decide their fates. we're also hearing from president biden and what he hopes to see from the next administration, specifically when it comes to the economy. nbc's garrett haake has it all covered this morning. garrett, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, craig. good morning to you. yeah, the capital has been buzzing as these slip from meeting to meeting surrounded by reporters on tap for pentagon pick, pete hegseth today is a sit down with moderate maine senator susan collins could sink his nomination or send him to the pentagon. this morning another day of high stakes meetings on capitol hill awaits president-elect trump's picks. the combat veteran turned tv host meeting with lisa murkowski

tuesday. >> our foreign policy has been going in the wrong direction, and she will change that. >> reporter: as the president-elect builds out his new administration team, president biden giving an economic speech, hoping to shape understanding of his administration's successes. >> most economists agree the new administration will inherit a fairly strong economy. it is my profound hope that the new administration will preserve and build on this progress. >> reporter: and back here in palm beach, trump announcing a flurry of new administration picks overnight, including a couple top allies for ambassador posts. his long-time friend tom barrett will be his pick to be ambassador of turkey. and kimberly guilfoyle has been selected to be ambassador to greece. >> garrett, thank you. in the meantime, today marks two weeks to christmas, one week to the start of the busy travel rush. there are more predictions that more records could be set on the

roads and our nation's airports. nbc's senior correspondent, tom costello, joins us here. i'm in your neck of the woods. what are we expecting? >> both the airlines and aaa say thanksgiving and that volume we saw, that's just a warmup act. here comes act number two because they're talking about this continuing through the holidays. this morning aaa is predicting 119.3 million people will travel 50 miles or more from saturday, the 21st, to wednesday the 1st. the vast majority will drive 107 million people on the roads. think about that. 107 million people. that's a third of the population. most people prefer the flexibility of driving, of course, especially if you have kids in the car. gas prices are lower than last year. big time, right? the average last year, $3.02 a gallon. a year ago $3.12. 34 states are now paying under $3 a gallon. who would have thought, right? when it comes to the busiest days to drive, aaa says the

weekends before and after christmas will be the busiest on the roads with delays about 30% worse than normal. sunday, the 22nd, could be the absolute worst. busiest >> all right. well, what about flying? let's see some good news there. >> listen to this. every one of the tsa's busiest record-breaking days ever have been this year. the top ten have all been this year. and the sunday after thanksgiving was a barn burner. they had nearly 3.1 million people screened at tsa check points. for the upcoming holidays, the airlines are estimating 2.8 million passengers will fly every day. that's 6% more than a year ago, with record, a record 54 million people flying between december 19th and january 6th. by the way, the airline's travel window is longer than aaa's. the busiest days to fly, sunday, the 22nd. and then the thursday, friday, saturday and sunday after christmas.

costco. a portion of oak grove road was shut down for the investigation. witnesses told our crew at the scene they heard five gunshots and saw a bicycle in the middle of the street. we've reached out to police about more details and bring you updates as soon as we get them. now to a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. the bay area toll authority oversight committee is expected to vote on a series of toll hikes across bay area bridges. if approved, starting in 2026, fastrak users will pay $8.50 for all bridges excluding the golden gate. tolls would increase by $0.50 every year over the following four years, by 1050 by the year 2030. drivers without fastrak will pay slightly more. no doubt those drivers out there better be bundled up. cynthia is in for kari this morning. it's a cold start. it is a cold start. heaters on blast as well as we start freezing right now in santa rosa. also watching some areas of low clouds and fog through pleasanton. continuing in the 30s mid 40s through san

that targeted professional athletes. but these are break-ins that authorities have called fast, efficient and pressional. >> burrow. >> reporter: as joe burrow was leading his team to victory in dallas monday night -- >> someone broke into my house. >> reporter: police say his cincinnati area house was broken into. >> we do have a shattered window in the bedroom. e bedroom has been ransacked. >> reporter: the latest in a string of high-profile burglaries appearing to target professional athletes as they're competing on the road. according to an incident report, "sports illustrated" model olivia ponchin who works for the quarterback arrived monday night. >> can you please send other people? >> her mother making the call. >> my daughter is there. this is joe burrow's house. she is staying there. he's at the football game. >> reporter: police not detailing what was damaged or taken, but it comes as several professional sports leagues are warning of burglaries by

organized and skilled groups. in october, the homes of patrick mahomes and travis kelce were broken into within hours of each other. >> it's frustrating, disappointing. >> reporter: multiple nba starts also hit in recent months. bobby portis saying on instagram his home was burglarized in early november. >> they took most of my prized possessions. >> reporter: while no suspects have been identified in any of the cases, the nba sent a letter to staff saying there was a connection to transnational south american theft groups, that groups are primarily focused on cash and items that can be resold on the black market. the fbi is working with local authorities to find their suspects. >> they can do the reconnaissance. they fly a crew in to actually do the physical break-in. so none of those people are even in the country when they start investigating it. >> reporter: the nfl's memo suggesting that athletes always activate their home security

systems and avoid posting expensive items on social media. as investigators work to track the next suspects before the next away game heist. >> let's talk about that. it seems to keep happening. what are the next steps to track down a suspect or maybe even a potential link to these other robberies? >> reporter: yeah. they said a sheriff was on the ground, and police contacted neighbors to see if there is any surveillance images or videos of the suspect or suspects in this case. we do know that the county sheriffs office says a deputy was actually stationed at burrow's house. part of that detail not clear what response or what impact he had on the investigation to this. we did reach out to burrow. he has not responded to our request for comment. but the nfl says that it's been in contact with the cincinnati bengals about this incident. what they can do to warn athletes of the growing threat, craig. >> all right. shaq brewster for us there in cincinnati. shaq, thank you. coming up, another major

that is not how he went into the courthouse as he was escorted by armed shsheriff deties. he resisted that escort and he started shouting at cameras. and was clearly agitated. you know, this morning, we are learning more about his possible motive for the alleged shooting and killing of ceo brian thompson. according to an internal analysis of the nypd, investigators are looking at whether or not this was, quote, a symbolic takedown. also, according to three senior law enforcement officials, the writings found on luigi mangione by local police broadly criticize the health industry and also specifically criticize unitedhealthcare, calling them parasites in those writings. this morning luigi mangione is back in a pennsylvania state prison. he will stay there because bail was denied. the next scheduled court appearance for him is december 23rd. savannah?

>> all right. stephanie, thank you. all right. crews in southern california are still battling that out-of-control wildfire in malibu this morning. the fire has grown to 3,000 acres and destroyed seven structures. thousands of people are under evacuation orders. the flames are being fueled by those gusty winds. al is back now. a lot of people have their eyes on the weather. al, what do you see? >> the good news is things will get better today. right now we have an elevated risk from north of los angeles santa clarita, all the way down to pine valley, so the worst weather is going to be this morning. gusty winds, low humidity. by the afternoon, those winds will decrease. we will get an on shore flow, which will bring more humidity in, and that will help those firefighters. here in the east coast, we have a heavy line of showers and thunderstorms and mixed frozen precipitation up into northern new england. heavy rain.
