tying the suspect luigi mangione to the murder. the new york city police commissioner confirmed that mangione's fingerprints match those found on a water bottle and energy bar discarded near the murder scene and she made major revelations about the gun found on mangione when he was arrested on monday in pennsylvania. take a listen. >> we got the gun in question back from pennsylvania. it's now at the nypd crime lab. we were able to match that gun to the three shell casings that we found in midtown at the scene of the homicide. >> you remember it was a week ago today that united health care ceo brian thompson was gunned down on his way to a hotel where his company was hosting a conference for investors. >> leading us off om pennsylvania, george solis and onset nbc news legal analyst danny cevallos. george, we have these two new pieces of evidence. we're learning more about a

notebook as well found with mangione. walk us through what we learned today. >> reporter: yeah, kate. obviously the gun being a huge part of this investigation. inside of a spiral notebook, they said they found some writings from mangione, giving us a clearer glimpse at a potential motive. they said he wrote, what do you do, you whack the ceo at the annual parasitic bean counter convention. it's targeted, precise and doesn't risk innocence. authorities say he sort of debated on whether or not to use a gun or some type of explosive or incendiary device saying he chose the gun to lower the risk to other people in the area. this is all accocording to sours familiar with the investigation, giving us insight into how luigi mangione may have been trying to carry out this targeted attack. we saw him in court at the blair

county courthouse with that outburst and then he remained quiet as he answered questions from the prosecutors. he had another outburst on the first day of his initial appearance. 're seeing a little more about this suspect's demeanor and character as we learn more and follow that trail of evidence. >> george, thank you. danny, let's bring you in. you're a criminal defense attorney. what's the defense for mangione here, especially given what appears to be a mounting mountain of evidence between the fingerprints and gun? >> early on i was not of the opinion we were dealing with a criminal mastermind. a lot of people thought because he took a bike into central park -- while it's true there are less cameras in central park, there are more cameras in central park than kalamazoo, michigan. other than that we'll see the mountain of evidence that authorities were collecting, but not revealing. things like fingerprints, if he

didn't have a prior record, he's not in the databases. now that they have him, they can match up things like fingerprints, dna. they wouldn't have gotten a hit before if he's not in the system. we have all the evidence, images, all the things we're hearing about now because authorities are choosing to release that information. now that they have their suspect, they can match up the evidence. we'll see an avalanche. we've only seen the beginning. >> george, nbc news has been talking to a lot of people who knew luigi mangione. what kind of picture are we getting? >> reporter: well, what has been gathered is this is a person a lot of people didn't think was capable of doing such a thing. he was an ivy leaguer. he had a background in engineering. that's another question investigators have about the gun. was it a weapon he made or something purchased? some of the many questions mounting, but we've been hearing

from teachers, friends, sources familiar, again, someone they did not see being able to carry something like this out outside of his online postings. we're getting a better picture, but so many questions remain. >> george solis and danny cevallos, thank you. we're following breaking news out of washington. just a short time ago, fbi director christopher wray announced he will resign. >> wray's decision comes following a mounting pressure campaign from republicans in congress to step down. he has three years left in his ten-year term. president-elect donald trump voiced his intention to replace wray with kash patel. mr. trump nominated wray to lead the fbi in 2017 after firing james comey. >> joining us now is ken dilanian in washington. ken, what can you tell us about this move and what happens now that he says he's leaving? >> reporter: once donald trump announced he wanted to make kash patel the next fbi director,

christopher wray faced a choice of remaining in place and forcing donald trump to fire him and resigning. he told the workforce today he decided it was better for the bureau he work through january and resign before the end of this administration. an acting director will be appointed and donald trump can nominate kash patel. mr. trump posted on truth social, calling this a great day and pointing out that chris wray approved the fbi raid, mr. trump called it illegal, which is false, of his home in mar-a-lago. that's something really that donald trump could never forget about chris wray, even though he appointed chris wray as fbi director back in 2017 and wray managed to stay out of donald trump's line of fire during the trump presidency even though there were fbi investigations of mr. trump back then. during the biden administration, once the fbi searched donald

trump's home, he began denouncing chris wray. mr. wray has decided to step down rather than be fired. >> keken dinian from washington, thank you. firefighters in california are up against some tough weather conditions today as they try to contain a fast-moving wildfire. >> here's a look at some of the destruction in malibu. the franklin fire exploded in size overnight. nearly 12,000 people have been evacuated including celebrities like cher. >> locals are taking matters into their own hands. look at this video. a resident on roof spraying the flames with a hose. >> reporter: as you can see from the smoke behind me this caon has been burning all morning. there are still some areas with visible flames. for the most part crews

primarily from the air have managed to bring this down to a smolder. they have with multiple aircraft flying down the canyon and dropping water and fire retardant on the flames, surpressing the fire there. there are approximately 1,500 firefighters assigned to the franklin fire currently battling it from the air and the ground. they've been taking advantage of improved conditions with the winds. the santa ana winds that caused the fire to explode have quieted down somewhat. the fire is now 7% contained which is substantial progress. authorities are confident they can push the fire in that direction. that said, there are still dangerous conditions across southern california, particularly here in malibu. there's a red flag warning. there are both windy and dry

inflation increases were cooling from march to september and are now ticking back up. >> nbc news data reporter brian cheung is here to break down the numbers. where are we seeing the biggest price changes? >> worth rehashing what we're seeing in erms of that 2.7% figure. that's a pick up from what we saw in the last two months, but it's an improvement from 3% in the beginning of 2024 and much improved from 9% in the summer of 2022. when you look at the categories and what we're looking at now are monthly changes, how much did prices increase between october and november. there's an acceleration in food prices, up .4%, most of that is food away from home. energy costs increased by .2%. one encouraging sign was the slowing inflation in shelter. this is the coast for putting a roof over your head. that decreased from .4% to .3%.

prices in america, they're still rising. just at a lower pace. >> the federal reserve is set to meet next week to make a decision on interest rates. is it likely we'll see another cut? >> we could see another cut from the federal reserve. they're looking at that chart and saying it did the job of lowering inflation. even though we want to be closer to 2% that improvement means they can let up a little bit on some interest rate increases saying, actually let's cut this time. they did so in september and november. the expectation is they could cut interest rates again. we'll find out ednesday. >> grocery prices a concern for american consumers. there was supposed to be a merger between albertsons and kroger. what happened? >> when you think about who sets the prices, it's the reason we

focus on these large grocery chains like albertsons and krogers. they proposed a merger, but a judge said we don't think this will bring lower prices and they nullified their agreement. today albertsons is suing kroger for what they say is a botched merger deal. kroger will not be merging with albertsons as of right now, which could have some uncertain impacts on prices going forward. >> brian cheung, thank you. the cincinnati bengals win over the dallas cowboys monday night came at a cost for quarterback joe burrow. >> authorities say his home located in a suburb of cincinnati was broken into between sunday afternoon and monday night. it's the latest in a string of home burglaries targeting high-profile athletes. nbc news correspondent shaquille brewster joins us now.

burrows is joining a growing list of professional athletes reporting home breakins when they're out of town. what do you know? >> reporter: almost always when they're competing on the road. i got off the phone with the sheriff's office and they said they don't have any leads. according to that incident report we saw yesterday, this is something they found out about as he was in dallas competing against the dallas cowboys. they say an employee who works for him went to his house, saw the back window was shattered, saw his bedroom was ransacked. in her words we found out that employee was "sports illustrated" model olivia pontoon. listen to her 911 call to police. >> someone broke into my house, like completely messed up. >> the backyard?

>> no, the whole bedroom is. >> reporter: no word on what was taken or how much exactly was damaged. investigators are saying they're now talking to neighbors to see if there was anything captured on surveillance video hopefully giving em clues of who the suspects were in this case. >> to the point of suspects, do authorities have leads if these burglaries are connected at all, specifically to one group? >> reporter: no specific leads just yet, though the nfl and nba, some nba players have been caught in this as well, they're saying they're being told by the fbi that this is connected to a south american theft group and it's an organized ring targeting cash and other items that can be resold on the black market. watches, jewelry, expensive purses. they're advising athletes to make sure their alarm systems

voltaren, the joy of movement. janelle wang, a san francisco walgreens, was forced to close for the day after a car crashed into the store. it happened around 830 this morning near west portal and 14th avenue. police say two people, the driver of the car and someone inside the store were hurt, but they did not have to be taken to the hospital. sf fire says the driver was elderly, but it's not clear yet what caused the crash. that walgreens will be closed for the rest of the day. parents and students in the east bay will soon learn the fate of their schools, as the district tries to close a major budget deficit. here's nbc bob redell bob redell in oakland. at its meeting later this afternoon, the oakland unified school district board will meet to decide whether or not to go along with staff recommendations to merge ten of their campuses into five. you can see the list of schools that are under

consideration right there on your screen. these ten schools are already located on shared sites, so the proposal calls for the merger of international community school and think college. now manzanita community school and manzanita seed acorn woodland and encompass esperanza and korematsu discovery academy. united for success academy and life academy. now students would continue their classes as normal at these new combined schools, but the district estimates that by merging these campuses, they'll be able to cut down on administrative costs by an estimated 2 to $3 million, which is a small step towards closing the district's projected budget gap of $95 million next year. last month, there was a large crowd of concerned parents at one school board meeting. at the time, one teacher told us these mergers were a bad idea that would take away services from students. oakland unified school board member george lama, who represents district five, where

the majority of the proposed school mergers are located, says the area is also home to a large minority population, which some critics say is not coincidental. lama believes school restructuring does need to happen, but says students success must be a priority. he does not anticipate layoffs, but says administrators could be reassigned or moved to other locations. if the board approves these mergers, they would go into effect next fall. bob redell, nbc, bay area news. thank you bob. also in oakland, a drive by shooting investigation. it happened last night around 6:00 near 73rd and international. one person was shot. is expected to be okay. investigators say the shooting may be connected to a fight earlier in the day. so far, no arrests have been made and police are asking anyone with information to please come forward. in the south bay, check out this large water main break. it sent water shooting up into the air. it happened shortly before 10:00 this morning on the corner of zanker and trimble roads in north san jose. no word yet on the cause of the break.

did cause some minor flooding in that area. let's talk about the weather and some rain on the way for the bay area. cinthia pimentel has your microclimate forecast. we're seeing those clouds rolling in, mixing in with those hazy skies. over the last couple of days, we've just been sitting under that dome of high pressure. but that will change. we do have rain on the way for this evening, so we'll notice the temperatures come down a little bit into the north bay, upper 50s some mid 60s out towards the tri-valley and slightly warmer down here for the south bay. i do see it sweeping in. most of that activity into the overnight hours, giving us some very beneficial rain starting to fizzle out here for our thursday we'll be left with some spotty showers. now there is more rain on the way, potentially a stronger one, so i'll show you when that will come. rolling into the bay area in my next forecast in about 30 minutes. okay, see you in a bit. thank you so much, cynthia. south bay health care workers are calling for better working conditions. workers at valley medical center in san jose picketed this morning. they are members of the

engineers and scientists of california union. the santa clara county public health office and workers at valley medical, as well as o'connor hospital, have been negotiating employment contracts since july. workers say the county has not offered them a fair contract. every day that the county and again, what we believe is really stalling, they're holding back wages from the valuable folks. there's hundreds of folks here who work in the labs. they do the testing every day. they're who you you know, you fd out your results and they come through here. the union says it's scheduled to bargain with the hospital tomorrow. santa clara county sent us a statement that says in part, quote, we are in negotiations with the union and look forward to completing a contract that is fair and equitable for everyone. we'll have more news in the next half hour. and also you can get the latest from our website, nbcbayarea.com, and be sure to download our free nbc bay area

and morocco for the 2030 cup. saudi arabia is set to host in 2034. human rights groups have expressed concern about saudi arabia. saudi arabia has gained prominence in the international sports scene over the last few years. in new york a 40-year-old charged with drunk driving and trespassing after police say he drove his suv down the long island railroad tracks. that happened sunday. police say the man drove half a mile before two of his wheels went up in flames. thankfully no one was hurt. authorities still trying to figure out how he got his car on those tracks. a man who physically attacked a judge in court has been sentenced to at least 26 years in prison. you may remember that viral video of the incident from january in a las vegas

courtroom. the 31-year-old man was being sentenced for an at at the present time attempted battery charge. he's now pled guilty to other new charges with respect to the incident. the judge was hurt, but not hospitalized. new details this hour about a story we brought you earlier this week about the fate of the info wars website owned by alex jones. >> last night a judge ruled he would not approve the sale of info wars to the publication the onion. the onion won a bankruptcy auction to acquire info wars. jones filed for bankruptcy in 2022 after he was ordered to pay a billion dollar in damages to the families of the victims of the sandy hook shooting. joining us now is kathy park. kathy, what reason did the judge give? >> reporter: this was a two-day hearing. the judge wrapped up close to

11:30 last night. he ultimately decided the auction of info wars lacked transparency and left money on the table. he blocked the onion's bid. there were only two bids to begin with, the one from the onion and a company affiliated with alex jones. the judge said both offers were too low. >> kathy, what happens now? is it back to the drawing board for the sale? where does info wars go from here? >> reporter: kate, things actually won't be changing for jones as of now. he will be able to continue his show under the info wars branding. the judge put it back on the trustee to sell info wars in a way that would generate more money. he wants to see a plan within 30 days. it's unclear if there will be a new auction. after this decision last night, onion ceo ben collins released a statement writing, we are deeply disappointed but the onion will

continue to seek a resolution that helps the sandy hook families. we'll also continue to seek a path towards purchasing info wars in the coming weeks. we should also point out jones went live from his studio and told his viewers last night we can celebrate the judge doing the right thing. he originally alleged fraud and collusion with the whole option process that took place in november. kate? >> kathy park, thanks. frustration is growing over unexplained drones. they have been flying above new jersey and new york communities for weeks. >> new jersey governor phil murphy said he's taking the mystery deadly seriously. his office held a closed-door meeting with local officials to talk about the drones. the governor was not there. the fbi is also investigating. >> joining us now antonia hilton. what do we know about this

meeting held at the new jersey governor's office? >> reporter: it was a tense one. it happened earlier this morning. numerous officials gathered to demand answers and try to compare notes about what they could tell their communities was happening. many left frustrated. the fbi wasn't present, although other federal officials were on skype taking part. for some of the local mayors that was an insult. they wanted to go back to people and say we're taking action on your behalf and you're safe. you're seeing these drones which has been as large as small cars and dining tables. rightfully causing a lot of fear. you know, they could give their people some answers. take a listen to what our r te heard on the ground there. >> until you tell me where these drones are coming from, i'm assuming they're a threat. they're evading law enforcement. they're going over restricted air space. we're not talking about the drones that you're picking up on

amazon. these are drones with six-hour battery and flight times. that's significant equipment that needs to be identified as to where it's coming from. >> reporter: residents and local officials are concerned is this a foreign entity. you heard him say, this is not a kid who ordered a drone off amazon for his birthday and is flying it over his neighborhood. these are large and serious flights, sometimes flying in the dozens. people really are urging the federal government to tell them more. >> it's such a weird story. you have the democratic senator from new jersey cory booker calling on the biden administration to help and help them resolve what's going on. has the government said anything? >> reporter: yeah, the fbi is investigating. they're transparent about the fact they don't have answers. the faa is restricting the air space in new jersey. people are seeing sightings in new york as well. we could see an expansion in

danger to american youth, that's the claim against character a.i., now sued over disturbing content parents say artificial intelligence pushes to children and teens. at the heart of the case a feature on the app that allows users to chat with human-like characters known as companion chatbots.. according to the lawsuit, the bot coaxed a teenage boy y to engage in self-harm by cutting himself. the bot telling him, quote, it felt good and ing with his complaints, allegedly writing, i'm not surprised when i see the news child kills parents. lawyers for the parents say it isn't a design flaw, but the direct result of underlying design choices. >> it sends kids down these terrible rabbit holes. >> reporter: i tried out the app myself. i decided to go with a roman play write.

in today's modern parenting the holiday season is in full swing. for many kids that means the most exciting part of the year is right around the corner. >> for some families the gift giving season is a lot to navigate. kids might be getting older. budgets might be getting tighter. even the most well-meaning grandparents might go overboard. joining us now is a therapist. it might be hard to navigate the expectations around gift giving and receiving. where do we start with the communication? >> we need to clarify expectations and find out what

is everybody comfortable with. is everyone buying for everyone or just the kids or secret santas? you want to be mindful of this. when it comes to kids, it's hard to know what they want. they see the latest thing and they want it. when you're trying to navigate relatives buying for kids, you might want to say we have a gift full or an amazon gift list. >> what's a gift full? >> it's an app. it's saved my life. they put together what they want with links and you click on the link and buy it and it shows it's been bought. that's a great thing to share. >> i love that. any other tips for managing expectations for young ones? i know that different families have different budgets. >> that's right. i think especially as the kids get older and they're always comparing, especially siblings. how many did you get?

to offer supplemental early retirement to older eligible teachers. the board is trying to cut more than $100 million from the budget. teachers eligible for the early retirement plan will have until february to accept the plan, and if they do, they must retire on or before june 30th, 2025. many critics say letting go experienced teachers is not the best way to save money. another san francisco business closing its doors because of crime. safeway is shutting down its store in the fillmore district after 40 years. the grocery chain originally planned to close the location earlier this year, but a spokesperson says it stayed open to give the community time to adjust. safeway says all employees will be reassigned to other stores in the area. safeway sent out a statement saying in part, quote, the decision to close the store was made after careful consideration due to ongoing concerns about associate and customer safety, as well as persistent issues with theft. the store is set to officially close on february 7th. we are looking at a rainy
