making its way in tonight. i failed the team. you know rams are a good, good team overall. playoffs are going to be tough. but we still got some games to play. still got some grit. let's go. niners still showing heart after a wet and disappointing night for the niners at levi's. but it's not just the loss that's hurting the team. there's now also a player trying to call it quits. plus less gassy better for the planet. yeah. california researchers are now changing up cal's diet as a possible solution for our climate crisis. definitely want to stick around for that. this is today in the bay. why is this so funny? why? right. i mean, you never thought you'd be saying that on morning news, baby. right. i want to say good morning to you on this friday. thanks for allowing us to be a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington, and i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for laura garcia. we had our little five year old friend over, so there were a lot of teetee jokes last night, for sure. all right. we want to start with a look across the bay area, where it is wet
6:02 am
outside after the rain rolled through here. but there is another storm headed this way, and the rain will be back in full force tomorrow. rain here, of course, usually means snow in the sierra, and a winter storm warning has been issued there. snow causing a lot of delays. look at that lineup. chp posting this video of the big rigs and cars stopping as drivers struggle to put their chains on near truckee right now. chains are required both on i-80 and highway 50. meteorologist kari hall of course, tracking the timeline for us for the next storm, but still some stuff going on here now. yeah, so we still have some lingering light rain right now. we're tracking that for the morning commute as we take a look at storm ranger. that's our mobile doppler radar and the red beam that you're seeing scanning around the bay area. so it is mostly the north bay, but we are also seeing it moving into san francisco and parts of the peninsula, covering those areas with a steady, light rain. and we've also seen that in san francisco and all the way down the peninsula closer to palo alto. but we are going to see this picking up as the next
6:03 am
storm system arrives, much of it still offshore and connecting with an atmospheric river. so that's going to enhance the amount of rainfall. but really, at any point today we could see the rain, but the most intense of those downpours and the gusty winds will be with us early tomorrow morning through about 7 to 8:00 and then pushing off to the east at 9:00. and then just some spotty activity, mainly in the north bay around noon. so we will talk more about that timeline in a few minutes. but as of now, you can download our nbc bay area app, scan the qr code on your screen, and that gets you the updates from storm ranger, our mobile doppler radar, and me, as well as the rest of our team of meteorologists. and mike, the delay continues for the bay bridge. yeah, but this time today, it's not because of the weather. the conditions. yeah. a little north of there. misty. and watch those slicker conditions possible here. it was an early crash just past the toll plaza for the bay bridge. the backup formed very early. metering lights activated at 509 this morning. still slow, but that's recovering. what is not
6:04 am
recovering is the slowing into san francisco. there is a crew south 101 just past the merge or the split over there at van ness and octavia, and that is causing additional build coming out of san francisco. everything else outside of that drive across the bay bridge into the city, looking pretty standard for a friday, which is lighter. there's highway 37. back to you. thank you mike. new details are emerging about the lead up to the arrest of the alleged killer of the unitedhealthcare ceo, brian thompson. the san francisco chronicle is reporting that san francisco police recognized luigi mangione as the suspect, and contacted the fbi four days before mangione's arrest in pennsylvania. sources told the outlet that an officer in sfpd's special victims unit recognized mangione because his mother had reported him missing to san francisco police just last month. fbi officls declined to comment. the back and forth saga continues for oakland's airport. pushing for that new name, the port of oakland. appealing the order, which temporarily blocks the airport from using its new name.
6:05 am
you may remember the airport announced it was changing its name to the san francisco bay oakland international airport. well, san francisco didn't like that, filing a lawsuit saying that the new name was just too close to san francisco international and would cause confusion. last month, a judge issued a temporary order blocking oakland from using the new name. but now the port is claiming sfo did not present factual evidence. well, fans might be feeling as battered as the 49ers as the season has seen a slow crash and burn, and last night was the perfect example of that at levi's stadium. not a lot to cheer about the rain. partially to blame. brock purdy had a really rough night. missing ricky pearsall in the fourth quarter. he was open and then headed into the end zone. soon after purdy was intercepted, the rams win 12 to 6, but arguably the biggest moment of the night. linebacker de'vondre campbell calling it quits in the thirduarter. he told the coaches he didn't want
6:06 am
to play, so he walked out. has that ever happened to you where a player said they didn't want to play in a game? no one person making a. i think mooney said it a selfish decision and i'm with mooney on that, and i, i've never been around anybody that's ever done that. and i hope i'm never around anybody that does that again. the playoffs are likely now out of reach for san francisco, man. all right. well, the effects of that rain still going on for us here across the bay area. still wet on the roads out there. but how will it shape up for the rest of the day and the weekend? meteorologist kari hall has a look at what we can expect out there. kari, how is it looking? it is a soggy start this morning, and even if it's not raining, the cars in front of you as you're driving will be kicking up some of the water on the roadways. so you will still need the windshield wipers. and it's cool with temperatures in the low 50s and we won't warm up much more from there as we go into today, so expect it to be kind of soggy. some peeks of sunshine going into the afternoon with san jose's high temperatures in the low 60s. it
6:07 am
will be cool as well as some waves of rain coming in, and we are looking at mostly the north bay getting the bulk of the rain for today, and then picking up and moving into the rest of the bay area for tomorrow morning. really heavy rain, but if you have some saturday afternoon plans, it does look like things will start to taper off by then. so that's the good news, that we get all of the rain earlier in the day. and mike are. now let's turn to our climate in crisis. did you know that cow flatulence can actually warm our planet? well, they admit the same methane that is a harmful gas that stays in our atmososphere d traps heat from the sun. researchers from uc davis studied how changing a cow's diet can reduce the amount of methane emitted. they found that seaweed pellets added to the feed of a herd of beef cattle in montana ended up cutting about 40% of methane emissions, without affecting the cows health or weight. we did this experiment in dairy cattle first and then in beef cattle, and then we saw that we were getting quite substantial reductions in
6:08 am
emissions, and that's why we wanted to continue with this in this line of work. and so quite effective. but, you know, we've been working with other feed additives that would also be able to help us in reducing methane emissions as well. 12 to 14% of global greenhouse gases come from cows breaking wind. so as we look for solutions, this one sounds easy with promising results. the findings of this study will be published in the national academy of science, and will post a link to the article on our website, nbcbayarea.com, and look for the climate and crisis tab. mike is tracking gas of a different sort. yeah, thank you for that. breaking news kari. we're over here talking about gasoline. this is in livermore. keeps its place on the top ten list as it's been for a couple of weeks now, loosening its grip, but prices up a dime for their low to 3.29. still, at those two marathons, the one on homes and the one on the south livermore, then in marin county, the next price is
6:09 am
3.59. that's the bargain for mill valley. that's the old fave. hq fuels on shoreline highway. and then in san jose, the bottom number here is the south bay best of 3.69. we pick out san jose as today's source, but a lot of them scattered throughout the south bay. this one's at platinum gas on tully road, but you can check gasbuddy.com for the prices in your area. back out to the roadways where we had a big problem at the bay bridge. everything else is looking friday light. we have a slower drive getting into the city. an earlier crash on the incline cleared the backup recovering, but building off the east shore freeway and the berkeley curve. i've circled the crash now reported west 80 at fremont, one of your first exits into the city, and there's a project going on which is causing more delays and backup as you extend down to 101. back to you. thanks, mike. we are one week away from the start of the end of the year travel rush. let's take a live look at sfo. and with so many people at airports, odds are somebody's luggage is going to get lost. travelers now taking things into their own hands and airlines are taking
6:10 am
notice. coming up at 625, we go one on one with united on the way. they're using new tech to track down your bags. and we have spicy news about a spicy sale. let's go out to the futures as well this morning. see what's happening on wall street. that looks like a mild open except the nasdaq. that's no doubt. broadcom will tell you why that valley company is doing well when we come back.
6:12 am
6:13 am
very happy friday to you. markets moved lower thursday. nasdaq back under 20,000 although barely. this stock is broadcom doesn't look like it based on the stock symbol. broadcom makes chips. it's got investment investors convinced it is the next to pop over artificial intelligence. so shares lower yesterday but much higher in pre trading. amazon the latest company to donate $1 million to donald trump's inauguration. and moments ago so too did sam altman the head of openai. trump meantime had what the new york times called the most 80s day ever as the time magazine man of the year, and then ringing the opening bell on the new york stock exchange. this is the second time the magazine has selected trump. last year was taylor swift. he
6:14 am
spoke from the podium shortly before market ope we had a of turmoil caused unnecessarily. and but the media is tamed down a little bit. they're liking us much better now. i think. trump walked back a promise to lower grocery prices. we'll talk about that in our politics segment. a lot of industries meantime trying to figure out what a trump presidency will mean for them will, for instance, he go through with the tariffs against china, canada and mexico. the ceo of the bay area christmas tree company, balsam hill, has factctories in china and mexico and has several strategies moving forward depending on what happens. it's really going to depend on what actually happens versus what's being said. we've heard so many different things that are being said, and each of those countries can can impact us. we do produce a lot of our goods in china. so obviously if there is a 10% or great tariff on goods in china, unfortunately we're going to have no choice but to raise our prices. matt.

carmen, my guest this sunday morning on press here right after meet the press. we'll also take a look at the huge growth in blue sky as an alternative to the growing toxicity of other social networks. elon musk's charity has not been paying out enough money, according to public filings made wednesday. the irs requires foundations to actually donate or grant a certain percentage of money each year to keep the charity designation, and bloomberg reports this is the third year in a row musk's foundation has fallen short. the numbers show about half of musk's donations from his foundation last year went to another charity he controls, and buzzfeed is selling its youtube show, hot ones, to a private equity firm controlled by george soros. $82 million on the show, celebrity guests eat progressively spicier chicken wings while answering surprisingly probing questions. they say they will not change the show in any way. well, i would never have anticipated a youtube show could be worth tens
6:16 am
of millions, but they are the creativity on these shows and think of how much they make it cost. practically nothing. yes, i mean, the wings are what? right? 26 bucks? yeah, but just the brilliance of it. and i love watching youtube. it's one of my favorite channels because there's so much, so much interesting stuff to watch. and that's why so many people are making money because of people like you watching. oh, absolutely. yeah. i pay for the youtube premium. i don't i don't even have to see the ads. oh. oh yeah. so i'm. but i'm paying them. yeah yeah yeah. that's true. yeah. all right. thanks, guys. you bet. well, california public schools still face an uphill battle when it comes to funding and higher test scores. and that is the message from educators who are trying to figure out how to fix it. california schools used to be the gold standard 50 years ago, and now they rank toward the bottom of the 50 states. more than 4000 california school board members and superintendents gathered last week in southern california to try to find the solutions. a spokesperson for the california school boards association says
6:17 am
don't expect any major changes next school year. people are realistic about the fact that the global conditions are not encouraging for education right now because of all the financial pressures, because of declining enrollment, and because we have struggled to rebound from the dip in student achievement during the pandemic, we haven't recovered as quickly as we would like. the trend is not as positive as what you would like to see, and it doesn't pretend. it doesn't suggest that there's going to be a huge leap this year. now, flint says that california does have the knowledge on how to improve public education, but in some districts, it's a personnel issue and also an issue of funding. well, trending for you this morning. there is a new way to connect to jolly old saint nick directly. life at the north pole is simply magical. the north pole where is santa from? i didn't realize they had that
6:18 am
accident. accident at the north pole? well, chatgpt is actually offering up one on one chats with santa himself. whether you have questions about life in the north pole, or if you're just curious about what his elves and his reindeer are up to, you can find out there. or i can asksk m where he's from. i can do that. the feature is offered as part of chatgpt's advance voice mode. of course, he has the same accent as madonna, so he's from detroit? yeah, by way of london. by way of london. santa does get exposure to a lot of world culture. this is true. perhaps he speaks many languages,, perhaps many accents. that kind of reminds me, though, of, you know, back when we were able to get that app where you can take a picture and then, like photoshop santa in the background, like popping out from behind the tree and stuff. i was telling marcus one time we went out to eat. the kids were small. it was a restaurant in san jose. random october santa walks in, peeks in the door and closes the door to cool october.
6:19 am
and so we look at the kids and we're like, see? he's always watching, always watching, always watching. bigad. they're like, we will eat our vegetables. we've all been nice this year. yes, absolutely. very nice. the weather has been, you know, naughty and nice. i guess it just depends on where you are. let's get a look at what we're seeing this morning as we track the incoming rain with storm ranger. that's our mobile doppler radar, where we are seeing some widespread light rain in parts of the north bay, and it is starting to pick up for marin county near the coast there. and we've also seen light rain in san francisco and the peninsula, but it is pretty much all of the north bay that's getting the wet weather as of now. and then it's starting to pick up in san francisco, the peninsula, and eventually will move into the east bay. it comes all the way down to about palo alto, but we are going to see much more of this activity throughout the morning into the day as we get this initial wave of some light rain. but this is not the storm system we've been talking about. this is out ahead of that, and we can see the rest
6:20 am
of the storm is still well off the coast, and there's that long line of clouds extending into the pacific northwest down to the bay area. this is an atmospheric river. it does have that connection to that deep subtropical moisture. and so that's enhancing the amount of rainfall that we'll see, but also giving it much more strength. so as we go into the next couple of days, we'll be dealing with this high winds as well as the heavy rain. and there is a high wind watch in effect for the coast, including san francisco and parts of the east bay hills, where gusts may top 50mph tonight and into early tomorrow. and that's when the bulk of the storm is coming in, although today we will see some light showers off and on some of the heavy rain and the really bright colors. picking up on the map here is when we'll see the heaviest rainfall, the highest of those winds, and then it quicy starts to taper off late tomorrow morning. there still may be some lingering showers throughout the day, but if you do have some saturday afternoon
6:21 am
plans, things are looking much better and it will be all clear on sunday. it's mainly overnight into early tomorrow, where we're looking at anywhere from one to possibly three inches of rainfall, and then the srra is going to get a high amount of snow about 10 to 27in. the highest snowfall totals will be for those upper elevations for the north lake area and then into early next week. there's more rain coming in on monday. it looks in and out of here quickly and won't be as heavy. and then going into much of next week it is dry as the storms stay just to our north, but we may see some more activity just ahead of christmas. so looking at all of that hea rain coming in for now and into the weekend. sunday is looking dry. another round of rain on monday, and then we start out next week with some cool but dry weather and temperatures in the low 60s. and mike, you've been watching the roads. the bay bridge has been the main issue. yeah, because that's the one that's unusually slow. everything else around the bay is pretty typical for a
6:22 am
friday. lighter traffic flow hov big advantage wasn't earlier. the crash on the incline caused a big backup. then things really cleared on the span. but now you see slowing all the way across cause of that volume of traffic and slowing into the city. a crash at fremont for west 80th may be clearing, but the slowing extends past the incident. there is a project going on south 101, and i think it's still going on. even though it m might have been cleared at six, they're still slowing past that scene. everything else looks pretty standard. there's a lighter east bay, a build to the richmond bridge. back to you. all right. thank you. mike. 621 this morning next here on today in the bay nbc bay area responds. united airlines is empowering passengers like you to help them locate your lost luggage. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. i'll show you how. next. hey, there it is. day seven of the 12 days of christmas snack mix edition. and i give you my friend sonia's mighty little meatballs. she has brought this to so many parties. and let me tell you, this is one of the first things that gets

where holiday travel is set to really ramp up in about a week. today, the bay area's biggest air carrier gave us a sneak peek at some new tech that helps you help them find your lost luggage. we've all been there, right? so consumer investigator chris moore joins us now from sfo. chris, good morning from terminal three. you know airlines have a 99% on time record delivering your bags at the same time they deliver you to your destination. well, what united just showed us empowers you in the 1% of cases when they don't deliver on time. united is now letting you share your air tag location data, and air tag is roughly 20 or $30. apple wi-fi tracker that lots of savvy
6:27 am
travers drop in their checked bags to keep tabs on them. well, by integrating that info into its baggage tracing system, united is hopeful its reps can reunite more passengers with late or lost luggage and more quickly. the goal is to actually not use this technology and never lose a bag. but when we do, in those rare instances that we do and there's an air tag in someone's bag, we can't see it right now. currently. so this will give us the ability to integrate their air tag into our united app, and we can see the bag and recover it. united is the first u.s. carrier to do this, but not the only airline to fold air tag data into their baggage systems. when apple recently announced this new feature, it said it was partnering with more than a dozen airlines globally to start sharing air tag data. united says you need to have the latest ios on your iphone and the latest united app. and that's it from sfo. back to you in the studio. thanks, chris. all right. next top stories we're covering for you today. include that incoming storm taking aim

are getting ready for another round of rain. the weekend warning issued ahead of tonight's storm, a bait and switch caught on camera and officials say it's a growing crime trend. the distraction technique used to swap a south bay woman's necklace right off her neck. plus, making sure shelter animals go home for the holidays. we'll take you live to the silicon valley humane society to talk about their push to clear the shelters this december. this is today in the bay. good friday morning to you, i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for laura garcia. and i'm marcus washington. want to get a look outside for you this morning across the bay area where you know what? the roads are wet, but it's pretty dry out there for the most part. meteorologist kari hall, of course, tracking the impact of your weekend plans. i know a lot of folks are like, okay, are we going to be able to get out and do some things? yeah, there's going to
6:32 am
be some windows to get outside and enjoy the lights, the displays and get some shopping done too. we are starting out with some light rain in much of the north bay, as well as san francisco and into the peninsula. we're tracking it all with storm ranger, but also seeing much more heavy rain farther to the north. and that's not even the brunt of the storm system that's on the way. you can see that long line of clouds, that atmospheric river that will be on the way and already causing the issues and concerns about flooding, mainly in the north bay, where we are still at about 200 to 300% of its normal amount of rainfall from that last storm. so we have we're expecting about 2 to 3in of rainfall in the valleys and possibly over five inches of rainfall in the mountains. so you want to make sure that you have an emergency plan. you know, if your home is in a flood zone or have remember that past history, have a plan and evacuate if needed and never drive where water covers the road. make sure you have your possessions ready and you're gathering the paperwork and you're signed up for either the nixle alerts or the nbc bay area
6:33 am
app to get those alerts. so we're expecting that storm to dump a couple of inches of rain in the north bay are today in the bay's bob redell live there, and you were expecting that much rainfall. it's a concern when you consider how saturated the ground are. you're correct. good morning to kari. and i didt realize we were at a 2 to 3 x, our normal amount of rainfall for parts of the bay area, and that makes sense, given the fact that places like santa rosa up in the north bay, the ground there is already saturated because of that atmospheric river that hit them a couple of weeks ago, during which it dumped 1 14.5in over a period of 72 hours, the ground still saturated as a result, as you mentioned, which means trees are more likely to become uprooted and fall down. we caught up with edgar salas with the tree service, who chopped up and hauled away a giant redwood tree yesterday from a property in napa because the owner there, he wanted it gone before the new rains arrived. salas suggests you check your trees for rot and
6:34 am
think about thinning them to release the load. the trees like that have a lot of weight. i think this is the tree needs to be trimmed. obviously, if you have a leaning trees, you're checking out the base of the trees. it's not just the rain, it's the wind. we actually put a message out to our community this morning that although we're not part of the wind advisory, it's going to be gusty. it's going to be windy locally. so as kari has been mentioning, strong system expected starting later tonight, especially in the north bay, continuing on into tomorrow again, potentially bringing with it a couple of inches of rain for places like santa rosa. more if you're in the upper hills, if roads flood. a reminder from authorities don't drive through those areas. the water could be much deeper than it appears. reporting live bob redell today in the bay. thanks bob, and you can track the rain on the go all weekend lonong. as y're out and about. you can download the nbc bay area app by scanning the qr code on your screen. that'll get
6:35 am
you the latest updates from our storm ranger doppler radar and our team of meteorologists. well, this morning, people living in one sunnyvale neighborhood are on edge. they are trying to find the person who stole one woman's necklace right from around her own neck. the entire thing was captured on surveillance video. kalaiselvi variable was walking tuesday afternoon near san miguel school in sunnyvale. she said a woman stopped to ask for directions and then took out a necklace trying to swap the gold chain she had on her neck. she tried to put that in my neck. and then i think at that time i realized that something she is doing something. so i was struggling to push her out. it's quite precious. i wear it every day. how the jewelry theft is a trend law enforcement has been warning about in recent months in cities like sunnyvale, fremont, san ramon and menlo park as well. we've reached out to the sunnyvale department of public safety. we are waiting to hear back. happening tomorrow san francisco police holding a gun
6:36 am
buyback event. you can turn in your gun for cash, no questions asked. now, if it comes, it comes as we hit the 12 year mark since the sandy hook school shooting on december 14th. that event goes from 8 a.m. until noon at the headquarters of the violence prevention and youth development organization, united plaza. this is a united players. i'm sorry. that's on howard street. well, turning in a handgun will get you $100. and for assault weapons, $200 will be given out. well, let's turn back now to our weather coverage. that snow on its way to the sierra and the winter storm turning this right here, the road there into a standstill for a lot of those vehicles tomorrow. the snow, i mean, sorry, yesterday i should say that snow was causing some major delays along i-80. chp posted this video you saw there of those long lines, big rigs and cars stopping to put the chains on near truckee. one driver said that the roads just were unsafe. it was really going slow, was
6:37 am
kind of getting irritated how slow she was going. to be honest with you. but i seen like, okay, now i understand why you were going real slow, but now it's like, man, it's not, it's not safe. okay, so take a live look for you right now. this is highway 50 at meyers, just outside of south lake tahoe. and you can see that snow there on the ground right now. chains are required on both i-80 and highway 50. i have never put chains on the car, and i don't want to. meteorologist kari hall is here tracking the snowy conditions. you know, people are surprised sometimes when they have to put the chains on, but i'm surprised that people are surprised. you're driving through the sierra and it's winter time. the sometimes it snows, and then that makes the road slick. yeah. and you're driving through mountains. i put tire chains on before or my husband has. okay. it's not that difficult, actually. so i mean, there's always people there to help you, so don't be afraid of it. bring them with you if you're going, because they're really expensive up there. if you don't have them already,
6:38 am
they're like twice or three times. yeah. so it's going to be that kind of weather. but when you take a look at this live view, it's so beautiful. i know you want to go check it out and enjoy the snow. we are going to see more snow coming down. you want to make sure you're safe. you have that emergency kit in the vehicle and we're going to see more snow coming down. so most likely more chain requirements if they don't close the roads altogether. and then we're looking at more of that into tomorrow. and then once the snow ends the temperatures drop down to 12 degrees. it is going to be cold. and of course a lot of that slush starts to freeze. so be careful and mindful of that. and then it clears out as you're heading back to the bay area on sunday, looking at some things to do here locally without all of that risk, we are going to have some nice weather for the tunnels of joy and brentwood. tonight it's going to be cloudy and then watching out for some rain later on in the evening. also, ice skating in san jose will be mostl cloudy throughout the evening. you just want to make sure you're bundled
6:39 am
up as we stay in the 50s into tonight and tomorrow, santacon will be happening in san francisco. we start out the day with rain, and then it tapers off to some showers and then eventually clearing up as we see a lot of those santas running through the clubs and some of the pubs in the city, it's going to be in the mid 50s and at least the rain will be easing up. if you're lucky enough to have those tickets for glow for tomorrow night, it looks good, just maybe a little damp after that early morning rain. and mike, you're saying that the big surprise is still at the bay bridge commute? yeah, usually it's surprisingly light today. it's been surprisingly slow ever since the crash happened on 5:00 in the morning. started an early backup. the incline now jammed all the way across from the earlier crash scene, which did clear on the incline all the way into san francisco, pushing some traffic. now that there's a build through the east bay over toward the richmond bridge, where we do see a good backup here. and look at that. some fresh water on the lens. so there are still sprinkles, as kari been talking about. here's that road weather index showing you the north bay getting some
6:40 am
damp roadways slowing across these westbound bridges, and highway 37 kicking in. now with a little break, tap here through concord and 242. so the build is on for this friday. again lighter traffic flow, but the bay bridge is tough. scott. we even have the lower manzanita park and ride that's still closed. not because of the rain, but because of those king tides. over to you. all right, well, coming up on today in the bay, an interview with the former assistant director of the fbi. plus a look at some of the things that trump has promised out to the big board this morning. we continue to see gains. and i'm cinthia pimentel at the humane society of silicon valley. they have their home for the holidays campaign. so many friends ready to be adopted. it will be the best present that you can get somebody this holiday season. and i've got to show you who's here, ready to be adopted. you don't wtan

the center of this video from a preliminary hearing, pleaded guilty in federal court this week to creating false federal records and obstructing justice. meantime, psident elect trump's choice to run the fbi kash patel continues to meet with u.s. senators who will decide whether or not to approve that nomination. patel has long experience in washington, but no experice in law enforcement. now, someone who do does have many years in law enforcement is frank figliuzzi, the former assistant director of the fbi. before that, an fbi agent. now nbc national security analyst. frank, you worry patel will not be able to pass the fbi background check to become the director of the fbi. yeah. i mean, aside from his total lack of qualifications for the job, other than apparently blind allegiance to donald trump, if he is actually submitted for an fbi background check, he's going to face some problems around
6:45 am
honesty and veracity, particularly the fact that doj had to grant kash patel criminal immunity in order for him to talk freely about his role in the mar-a-lago classified documents case. he's also been accused of lying when he was an assistant at the pentagon in in the middle of a navy seal team six operation that could have jeopardized the operation and the life of a hostage. and then, of course, there's general concerns about his language so far, about his intentions to use the fbi to pursue the media, investigators and prosecutors. so lots of concerns in this nomination process. i think a lot of people also were were disappointed that director wray seemed to clear the way by unexpectedly saying that he will quit at the end of the biden administration. director wray had a, you know, a ten year term with, what, 2 or 3 years still left on it. and one of the points of having this term is to
6:46 am
remove the fbi leadership away from politics. indeed, count me among the people who are disappointed with director wray's decision, because we've got to continue to stick to our norms, even when those norms are continually under attack and people need to understand the fbi directors are appointed to ten year terms for a reason, in part to avoid further politicization of those of that agency. you know, it'sot a political thing. it's not supposed to change over with every new president. yet. donald trump threatened to fire him, didn't like him, didn't like him personally. why? because he views the director as someone who presided over the search warrant at mar-a-lago, went on capitol hill and called january 6th a domestic terror case. actually has has said that trump and his his violent extremists do pose a threat. so those were the cardinal sins for chris wray. i wish he had stuck in
6:47 am
there and made trump fire him. it was indeed a surprise. frank, i appreciate you taking time to join us this morning. thank you ever so much. meantime, president elect donald trump walked back his promise to lower grocery prices in the first weeks of his presidency during an appearance at the stock market on thursday, saying, quote, it's hard to bring things down very hard. trump was at the new york stock exchange to celebrate the pick of the year as person of the year on time. j.d. vance there on the far left as well. cnbc's jim cramer was there. sounded very pleased to interview the president elect. thank you sir. we were together and i was grateful to be a judge on the apprentice. we had a great time. that's right. you were a judge. he was. he was a tough judge. he was a tough judge. well, we had to eliminate some people who didn't cut the mustard. do you? you made me a hatchet man, i respect that. as for trump's promised price cuts, remember, groceries weren't the only promise. he promised to cut electricity prices in half in the first 18 months of his
6:48 am
presidency. so he has to june of 2026 to do this. he's also promised to cut your car insurance in half, although he hasn't explained precisely how he's going to do that. but congratulations, your car insurance is going to be half as expensive. now, car insurance companies are regulated by the u.s. government, by state government, but they are private businesses. trump and his close associate, elon musk, have said they want to reduce regulation, not increase it. so it's not clear how they'll do this. but some governments, like three provinces in canada, lower car insurance prices by setting up government funded car insurance. secretary of state antony blinken meeting with key officials in turkey. that's one of our nato allies talking about syria. remember, syria and turkey share a border. there's a big group of kurds in syria. there are allies, too, because they're very good at fighting isis. the problem with the friends are the turks and the friends of the kurds is they are not friends with each other. you may recal in 2019, then
6:49 am
president trump suddenly and unexpectedly gave the nod to turkey to create a safe zone along its border with syria, killing kurds and displacing civilians. the turks did, as you might imagine, marcus, the still the two still don't like each other. yeah, we still talk about it. all right, scott, thank you. all right. 648 for you this morning. of course, we are moving the bay area forward with something merry and bright this morning for you. maybe you haven't figured out what you need to get that special someone, or maybe even yourself, if you still haven't figured it out. don't you worry, because we always have you covered. the humane society silicon valley wants to help you bring your forever friend home this holiday season. and today in the bay, cinthia pimentel is there this morning to talk about more. good morning to you, cynthia. okay. good morning everyone. yes that's correct. home for the holidays. just in time. maybe you haven't gotten the chance to go to the store. you're still scrambling for that secret santa gift. don't worry, we've got you covered. it's happening here at
6:50 am
the humane society of silicon valley. i'm here with nancy this morning. what do you guys hope to achieve with this campaign, and what can people do to help you guys out? i think it's really just awareness that, you know, shelters and rescues in our area, but also just around the country are full of animals at this point, especially large dogs. so if we can get awareness out about that and help them find homes, then we will feel great about this campaign. and when you come in, you see this huge giving tree. there's different amounts that people can choose to donate that will really help you guys out this holidayeason, right? ranging from $10 to $200, covering those important spay and neuter processes. so when you come in here, that's the first thing you'll see and you'll be greeted with, and another thing you'll be greeted with, and somebody who needs a forever home. here's that secret santa gift for everybody. maybe you were scrambling to find the present. this is carmen with a k and she is a mama. all of her puppies already got adopted and she is
6:51 am
ready to go. and with this campaign, the adoption fee is down to about $50. right? dollars? yeah. it's a select group of animals that you can find on our website, on our shelter spotlight page. and they are, like i said, a lot of the larger dogs and maybe animals that have been here a while. yeah, just need a little extra focus on them. so. and she can be delivered to you on christmas day, right? if you want to make it even more special. carmen isn't part of that. oh, man, i know, i know, but we will have a select group of puppies and kittens that will be available for delivery on christmas morning. so cute. oh my goodness. well, nancy and carmen, thank you so much for being with us on today in the bay. all those details about the home for the holidays campaign that runs actually until about january 5th. you can find them on. h s s v.org. and of course you can find that link on our website if that's too tricky. nbcbayarea.com. but for now live in milpitas. i'm cinthia pimentel. back to you in the studio. come get carmen. i, i
6:52 am
have a carmen already. i don't need another carmen. i know, i love that they give you the option of helping, even if you cannot adopt another pet, because some of us just have a house full, right. and to be able to pay for a spay and neuter, that's just really an excellent idea. yeah, i was just and they always need volunteers. so in any way that you can help, they're always appreciative of that. right? carmen? yes, ma'am. oh my goodness she is cute. she just wants to be loved on. very expressive. yeah. she. all right. well waking up this morning we know we have some shopping to do. maybe heading out to the shelters to see who's available. we are going to have some kin of iffy weather. it's going to be a little touch and go at points. but we are starting out with this beautiful view. looking at dublin this morning as the sun is coming up. and even though it's not actively raining right now, the cars in front of you may be kicking up some water. so you may have to turn on the windshield wipers. and we need a
6:53 am
windshield wiper for the lens here. looking at the richmond san rafael bridge approach, where we are seeing some light showers coming down, the roads are wet and storm ranger is picking up on all of this activity. with the rain covering the north bay and moving into san francisco. it's also starting to also move into parts of the east bay, with much of contra costa county seeing at least some light sprinkles and then moving into hayward and fremont, and then a little closer look down the peninsula where we're seeing the light showers in palo alto. it's going to be moving into sunnyvale within the next few minutes, so we are seeing some light rain to start out our friday morning. but this is not the storm system we've been talking about. this is kind of the appetizer because we are going to see some heavier rain moving in tonight, all connected with that tropical moisture that's being pumped into the bay area. yes, we call that the pineapple express or an atmospheric river. it't'a steady stream of moisture in the lower levels of the atmosphere that also brings in sometimes high winds and heavy rain. so we're going to see that in the
6:54 am
forecast for tomorrow. today it's mainly light showers, just kind of off and on with the north bay getting the most as we time it out. look at these bright colors here. this is really intense rainfall along with some gusty winds that we'll see during the overnight hours. and then continuing into tomorrow morning. the good thing is that most of this is happening during the morning. so if you have some saturday afternoon plans, some sunday plans, it looks good, most of it falling within the period of a few hours, but it will be a lot. we're looking at anywhere from one to possibly three inches of rainfall. and then another system arriving on monday, but then the rest of next week at this point is looking fairly dry. most of our active weather coming in within the next 24 hours and then starting to see activity easing up for the rest of the weekend. and then monday as we go back to work, there will be some more rain on the radar. mike, you're seeing an unexpected delay into san francisco trying to get folks to work for the finish of the week here. we've had an early backup,
6:55 am
an early crash around the toll plaza, then another one over on san francisco side near fremont caused continued slowing across the bay bridge. it's actually showing a better drive now, but there's a build down the east shore freeway, so that will be a factor. same thing for richmond bridge. more slowing backo you. thank you mike. happening now. postal inspectors are asking for the public's help in finding suspects responsible for robbing two letter carriers. video shows the suspect approaching a mailman on parrot street in vallejo last month. investigators say he demanded the mail man's master key at gunpoint. a similar robbery happened in antioch on november 29th, when a woman in a blue jacket also pulled out a gun, taking the carrier's master key. the postal service is offering $150,000

6:59 am
welcomeack. we are here with our top stories this morning and we start with a look outside right now where some roadways are wet after rain rolled through early this morning. but there is another storm headed our way as well. a winter storm warning issued for the sierra and snow caused major delays along i-80. chp posted this video showing the long line of big rigs and cars stopped as drivers tried to put those chains on near truckee right now. chains are required both on i-80 and highway 50. and of course, meteorologist kari hall, of course, has been tracking the timeline for us. even the next storm coming our way. kari. yeah, we are going to see the rain picking up later this evening. and the bulk of the heavy rain and the high wind will be early tomorrow. we're preparing for that. for the potential of wind damage as well as flooding, especially in the north bay. and we're tracking it all with the latest on our nbc bay area app. and the bay bridge is still slow recovering from
7:00 am
earlier crashes. i wanted to show you the rest of the bay. maybe some damp roadways, but use this warning for you on the peninsula tonight all the way through monday morning we have that express lane work on 101. you will have slowing between san mateo and palo alto, so use 280 as an alternate to 101. all right. good advice. the today show is just moments away, but you can stay with today in the bay. for more local news streaming on our platforms. at 8:00, the k pop group coming to the bay area and a health fair looking to move the bay area forward. every time i hear a k pop, i think of a nsync song, dirty pop. oh yeah, i think of cake pop. oh, stick around. inspiring thoughts. we may talk about more coming up at eight. stick around. thanks for joining us this morning. today show is next. what's the rest of that dirty pop? good friday morning, and it is going to be a brutally cold one. >> it will
