people out in the freezing cold. can you take a look at the crowd? >> how you doing? it's 23 degrees here in new york city. it's just a couple of weeks before christmas. it's a cold start. we are grateful for them. >> we know the tree is the draw. we are happy to have them. there is a lot to get to this saturday morning with now less than two weeks to go until christmas, including weather whiplash. millions of americans waking up to below freezing temperatures. there is relief in sight. angie will let he know when the warm up begins. we have the latest on former house speaker nancy pelosi's health while overseas with a delegation. let's start with the investigation into the suspected shooter of unitedhealthcare's ceo brian thompson. the suspect's mother was contacted by police in san francisco and asked if she thought the shooter could be her son.

nbc's priscilla thompson is covering this from the jail outside pennsylvania where the suspecis still being held this morning. priscilla, good morning. >> reporter: laura, good morning. while the nypd says they did not id luigi mangione until after he was arrested, we know authorities reached out to his mother the night before he was taken into custody. she confirmed the suspected gunman could in fact be her son. this morning, new details about an urgent tip identifying luigi mangione as the possible shooter of unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson four days before arrested. two officials tell nbc news that san francisco police thought the man caught flashing a smile in the hostel looks similar to the man in the missing person's poster. one of the tips nypd received days following the murder. mangione's mother filed a

missing person's report in november after not having spoken to her son since july. the information comes as the fight to bring mangione back to new york intensifies. >> i will continue to say he will be prosecuted in new york city. >> reporter: manhattan district attorney may soon drop his fight for extradition from pennsylvania to new york. >> we will see if he waives extradition. >> reporter: mangione's attorney has not responded to nbc news's request for comment. investigators are still working to identify a motive. unitedhealthcare says mangione was not insured by the company. the written ges on mangione found the name. it was more ideological than personal. he wrote about debilitating back pain. >> it was a life changing injury and that's what may have put him

on thispath. >> reporter: the why of the horrific ambush fueling a larger conversation around a flawed healthcare system. senator elizabeth warren making headlines with these remarks on wednesday. >> violence is never the answer. you can only push people so far and then they start to take matters into their own hands. >> reporter: thompson's boss also speaking outaging in this an op-ed the health system does not work as well as it should. calling for changes that make the health system better for everyone to honor thompson's life and legacy. even with the united health group ceo's calls for change and ing the violence, we have seen a wave of violence online which raises questions with copycat violence. a woman in florida was chargege with threatening her insurance company. she pled not guilty. this is raising concerns with

the nypd as the case continues to develop. laura. >> priscilla thompson starting us off this morning. thank you. we turn to the growing mystery in the skies. near nightly sightings of the drones. first appeared in new jersey and maryland and delaware andes where. sam brock is in new jersey this morning with more. sam, good morning. >> reporter: peter, good morning. words we are hearing from lawmakers are outrageous and unacceptable. the wait and see as the state of new jersey saw 80 reported suspected drone sightings in a single night. there are 21 counties in the state, at least ten have reported dozens of drone sightings from monmouth county. this has been expanding across the northeast. the fbi and department of homeland security reviewed imagery, peter, from the

imagery, quote reported the sightings are manned aircraft. the fbi said to the public there is no national security risk here at all. we can't explain what is going on and the mayor of bellevue, new jersey, excuse me, he said that explanation is lacking. >> when you have our governor going out on social media saying we don't know what it is, but we don't think it's a credible threat. you can't have it both ways. they are looking for something. i want to know what they are looking for. >> reporter: so president-elect trump weighed in had on social media saying either the public has to be informed here or the drones need to be shot down. that is not legal for drones flying in unrestricted air space and the risk to public safety. peter. >> some of the drones are good size. sam, so many questions about them and obviously who is behind them. significantly, another question, who is actually responsible for

answering these questions and getting to the bottom of this? >> reporter: that is a question of the hour. you talk about the fbi. their role is specifically determined is there or is there not a national security risk? the fbi is not know the drone chasing business. what about the faa? the faa does create rules for drones. they added a new page to the web site about drones. they do not have the reinforcements. the resources to investigator actual enforce president ment o broader scale. there is a broad gap with the security risk and who goes from here. in the meantime, you have refrigerator-sized drones hovering over communities and people want to know what is behind this. peter and laura. >> sam brock, we appreciate it. thank you. also today, president-elect trump is set to attend the army-navy football game with his pentagon pick expected to be there with him. pete hegseth has faced tough

scrutiny and making the rounds on capitol hill trying to convince lawmakers he is fit for the job. we have aaron gilchrist with the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, laura. president-elect trump will attend the army-navy game this afternoon. he will have pete hegseth with him in the suite. as the army veteran and former fox news commentator has sought support from lawmakers, there is still a concern with the allegations of drinking and sexual assault which he ies. support has grown for the embattled pentagon pick to go through the process, the nomination process, but that may not be enough to turn into votes come confirmation time. trump seems to bebe stanng by hegseth and that will be on display at the game today. also worth noting, vice president-elect jd vance will attend the game. his pick is daniel penny.

the man found not guilty in the chokehold death on the subway, laura. >> i want to ask about rfk jr. he is a noted vaccine skeptic and it has led to the position of authority and mitch mcconnell to speak out about his experience with poil lio. >> reporter: he warned anyone looking for senate confirmation should r clear of the polio vaccine. he was a critic kennedy lawyer, aaron siri, who's been helping him pick federal health officials for the incoming administration asked the fda to revoke the approval of the vaccine two years ago

they're packing up and they're leaving the country. and syrians are still celebrating. we wept to huge dem stations yesterday where there were thousands of syrians, women and children waving the country's new flag. they were singing and dancing. but i've got to tell you, whereby there are still so many unanswered questions here. we don't have the sense how this new izslaumest regime is going to govern, whether they'll lead with the liberalism and inclusivity. it's one region anthony blinken is in the region. she's speaking to leaders in most of the countries surrounding syria, trying to ensure a peaceful transition to this new government. and overnight we got an update from american travis timmerman. he's back in the united states now after he was found in syria this week after months after being jailed. >> pictures in syria you couldn't imagine a week ago. there's obviously been an

ongoing search there for another journalist. that's the journalist austin tice who's not been seen or heard from for more than a decade now. is there any new indication where he might be if he's still alive? >> reporter: yeah, peter. my colleague, richard engel, spoke with an activist who said he'd been imprisoned across a hallway from tice as recently as 2022. and there was a reuters story that came out yesterday that said some american and it's believed he might have been austin tice was seen running around the neighborhood right across the street where i am now actually here in damascus about ten years ago and it looked as though he'd been escaped from prison. he was returned to jail, according to this reuters story, and that person, that american's whereabouts is unknown. peter? >> and his mom is going to be kristen welker's guest on "meet the press" tomorrow as well. matt bradley, thank you very much. some breaking news out of

south korea today. the south korean president has been impeached. president yoon suk-yeol remains inthe palace. the constitutional court will decide to uphold the impeachment. former house speaker nancy pelosi is waking up this morning in the u.s. military hospital in landstuhl, germany after being air lifted there last night. the 84-year-old sustained an injuries during an official congressional visit friday and nancy pelosi is continuing her n the hospital, but did not provide any other detail. to an update on a troubling case that made national headlines back in 2006. the woman who accused those three duke university lacrosse players of raping her is admitting for the first time she made the whole thing up. more now from nbc's liz kreutz.

of michigan. columbus, more of the same. as far as nashville, a temperature of 41 degrees. by this afternoon, we keep the cooler than normal temperatures across the northeast and mid-atlantic. notice where the more mild conditions are. dallas, low 70s. kansas city that 50s. the milder conditions are e goin to spread north and east as we get into the day tomorrow. you will peel back the layers in parts of the great lakes and midwest. we head to the mid-50s for st. louis. nashville at 59. 70s for the center of the country. look what happens as far as the early part of our next week. we start in the mid-40s or upper 40s for monday. we get to the upper 50s on tuesday. it will feel spring-like and upper 40s on the way by wednesday. that's the look at the weather across the country. storm ranger is lit up in all of these bright returns of not only

kira klapper. former house speaker nancy pelosi will be medically evacuated out of luxembourg after she fell at an event. pelosi is being moved to a u.s. military medical center in germany. this is video that was taken last week while pelosi was in san francisco. yesterday, the former speaker was in luxembourg to honor two veterans for their service in world war two. that's where she fell down some stairs. last we heard, doctors say she likely will need surgery. back here locally, a scary situation in san jose after a fire broke out at an apartment complex last night. several people were rescued from their second floor balconies at the complex on moorpark avenue near san tomas expressway and 280. one person was hurt but is expected to be okay. two families had to find another place to sleep last night because of the fire. the start is under investigation. we're going to turn now to cinthia pimentel for a quick look at our

microclimate weather alert. yeah, we have that storm really barreling into the bay area. you can see it taking that counterclockwise turn. it's sucking in a lot of that moisture creating the instability. and it has been a pretty active morning so far. look at your screen right now. dozens of lightning strikes that have approached the coast around half moon bay to santa cruz and coming inland into san jose. so it's been a pretty exciting morning to watch this as well. we continue to watch with storm ranger our mobile doppler radar. those areas of yellows and oran on your screen showing us some heavier downpours right now with those rains we go down into the south bay. heavy rain right now through los altos, los gatos, the summit into san jose along the peninsula as well, where we'll still seeing some lightning being detected right around 280. so just be careful with these heavy downpours as they come through in the morning. they could dump a l of rain on you. and that is the situation going on right now as we move on into the east bay, through concord, down into san ramon, east towards brentwood as well up into the north bay. it is a little bit heavier as we

ken paxton announced the suit on friday. it launches the first challenge to shield laws that states passed to protect physicians after roe v. wade was overturned in 2022. texas has some of the most restrictive abortion bans in the country. president-elect trump is weighing in on daylight saving time time. president-elect posted on truth social he wants to get rid of it. he calls it inconvenient and costly to the nation. the american medical association agrees. saying cking with standard time is better for your health. if you were hoping to win the mega millions jackpot on friday the 13th, sorry, it was bad luck for all of us. the good news is the prize is up to $740 million. it is the eighth largest mega millions jackpot ever. the next drawing is on tuesday. let's turn to the years long challenge for millions of

americans. that is losing weight. this morning, new hope with the study showing people are slimming down. anne thompson is here with more. >> peter, good morning. this is good news for our health and healthcare costs. losing weight can help reduce the risk of some very serious illnesses like type-two diabetes and certain kinds of cancer. the question is is this just the blip or the start of the long-term trend. >> reporter: this morning, americans at long last are slimming down. body mass index and obesity prevalence dropping in the u.s. for the first time since 2013. >> i'm keeping the weight off. >> reporter: according to the cdc, nearly 2 in 5 americans have obesity. studies show a small decline that may be due to the popular weight loss drugs like ozempic. ♪ o-o-o ♪♪

midwest. 12 million people included in that. you sesee out we, too. this area is where we watch for the potential of icy conditions. it's not all that impressive, but still could slow you down if you hit the road anytime throughout the day today. notice the heavy rain in the ohio valley. the storm system works farther east tomorrow. this is what it looks like for sunday. not quite as robust, but we will see a potential for .50 to 1 inch of rain as well as the difficult road conditions with the ice accumulation across the midwest. that's the weather across the right now, very active, giving us those returns of heavy rain and also dozens of lightning strikes that are coming in from offshore. so we're seeing some right now. you might see that bright light through los altos hills, san jose, up towards parts of the peninsula around san mateo to 80. and we're seeing some heavy rain over the east bay, lightning also being detected over the altamont pass.

of unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson four days before arrested. two law enforcement officials tell nbc news that san francisco police thought the man caught flashing a smile in the manhattan hostel looked similar to the 26-year-old in the missing person poster and notified the fbi. one of hundreds of tips the nypd received in the days following the murder had. mangione's mother filed a missing person report in november after having not spoken to her son since july, the report says. the new information comes as the fight to bring mangione back to new york intensifies. >> i'll continue to say be prosecuted here in new york city. >> reporter: the manhattan district attorney alvin bragg suggesting the 26-year-old may soon drop his fight for extradition from pennsylvania to new york. >> whether he will waive extradition and contest. >> reporter: mangione's attorney has not responded to nbc's request for comment.

good morning. thank you for joining us on this saturday, december 14th, i'm kira klapper. former house speaker nancy pelosi will be medically evacuated out of luxembourg after she fell at an event yesterday. pelosi is being moved to a u.s. military medical center in germany. this is video taken from last week in san francisco. the former speaker was in luxembourg to honor two veterans for their service in world war two. that's where she fell down some stairs and apparently hurt her hip. last we heard, doctors say she likely will need surgery. now to san

jose, where a fire broke out last night at an apartment complex. several people had to be rescued from their second floor balconies. this is at a complex on moorpark avenue near san tomas expressway and 280. one person was hurt. we are told they will be okay, but two families had to find another place to sleep last night because the fire destroyed their home. it's unclear what started that fire. we're going to turn now to cinthia pimentel in that microclimate weather alert. good morning carol. good morning everyone. well, people in san francisco and san mateo counties just starting to bring their heart rate down after being woken up by that emergency alert for the tornado warning. yes, you heard that, correct. it has since expired. it went till about 615. but if we zoom in on here with storm ranger, it was caught in the middle of all that action. all of the area for the city, parts of south city into san bruno were highlighted in red for that tornado warning. we were detecting with the radar some strong winds that were coming in heavy rain rates. so
