went right through the windows breaking most of them. and tonight we talked to a woman who said that the tornado ripped off part of her roof. my god. caught off guard, people yelled as tree branches and debris came raining down on them, while those on the road described frightening drives. the tornado hit around 140 yesterday afternoon, flipping cars upside down and on their sides. one person pulled out of a vehicle was critically injured. we have two of the people that were taken to the hospital were released. we still have one person. as far as we know. they're still in the hospital right now. the tornado also ripped part of the roof off 86 year old carlene larue's mobile home. it was a big bang. boom. it sounded on this wall. and then the house shook. she says she found her crumpled roof a couple blocks away. the tornado also took out power
9:01 pm
lines and caused major outages. pg&e crews worked overnight and most of the power has been restored, except for more than a dozen traffic signals. the tornado also sent a huge ponderosa pine slamming down onto the roof of scotts valley middle school. the school will be open tomorrow, but the damaged classroom will be closed to students. so the next step is to repair those traffic signals. and that should happen sometime tomorrow. and then also to remove the rest of the debris. but judging by the size of these branches that are still left here, it's not going to be an easy task. reporting live in scotts valley, marianne favro, nbc, bay area news. there's a lot to clean up. marianne. thank you. one of the questions looming tonight. why was a tornado warning issued for san francisco, but not for the santa cruz county, where one actually touched down? our lisa gore talked to the national weather service to get some answers, and

her report is coming up in about ten minutes. let's take a live look outside right now at the view from san bruno mountain. that is our storm ranger, and it is scanning and it's seeing more showers on the way. let's check in with meteorologist rob mayeda, who's got the updated timeline on all that? yeah. calmer day today after the severe weather start. we had to the weekend. we had the tornado warning, the first ever issued for san francisco for an event that included 80 mile per hour straight line wind gusts down to sfo airport, san francisco and san mateo counties. and as you just heard, the ef one preliminary rating on that tornado at 140 yesterday afternoon in scotts valley. widespread tree and power impacts. now, today we've had a break, though we do have more rain on the way tomorrow. but the important factor here is the rain that's coming in tomorrow. mostly light to moderate and storm ranger is scanning the skies, not seeing much currently, but as we move up the coast here, you can see up on the north coast. that is where the rain is right now. and just in time for tomorrow morning's commute. plan on some ponding on the roads for a few areas here

they got creative and made it work. another neighbor sees it this way. it's very inconvenient. they use flashlights and waited for updates from pg&e. this morning there was another message which said the power will most likely be restored to today by 9 p.m. the utility says it's a storm related outage at the height, about 4500 customers in the area were without power. crews spent much of yesterday and today evaluating what needed to be repaired. we've seen a lot of vegetation impacting our lines, trees down, wire down, that sort of thing. today, pg&e gave an update after the powerful and windy storm moved through the bay area. the utility says it uses technology that helps pre-position crews and equipment ahead of the storm, and has about 5000 workers and contract partners working on restoring customers across the state. they say crews have made significant progress. earlier today, about 17,000 customers were out in the

bay area. our crews are making good progress with restoration. we anticipate most of those customers being restored today. in some areas where we've seen significant damage, we may have a few customers out that will be focused on restoring into tomorrow. for me, there was a lot of wind and it was a lot of shaking. neighbors we spoke with say the storm was strong. they're ready to have the lights back on before more rain arrives. christie smith, nbc, bay area news. let's go up to the sierra now. roads are thawing. this is what it looks like on i-80 at castle peak. you see, we can finally see the road. that's a start in the right direction. no chains required. drivers this weekend have been dealing with ice and snow as they try to reach the ski resorts. many having to stop put on chains. chain installers say it's been a long and very busy weekend. everybody is driving good. we haven't had a lot of wrecks. it's just been a tremendous amount of snow and they just couldn't keep up with it. with all the snow equipment.
9:06 pm
installers say the biggest issue while driving in the snow is for drivers going too fast for the conditions. that just makes sense. they say if you have to drive during a storm, slow down, carry extra supplies. our fre nbc bay area app is a great resource to have during the stormy weather, and our newly redesigned weather section is more accurate than what you've got on your smartphone. to scan the qr code on your screen to download it, and it is free. a heartbreaking update in the search for a missing man in gilroy. the body of 21 year old gabriel de lara has been found, according to search volunteers. this morning, members of the group spotted a body in a pond near where his car was abandoned. they say clothing and jewelry matched the description of what de lara was last seen wearing. he had been reported missing since december 1st. family friend says they're devastated, but at least they have some closure. he was very respectful, hard working, responsible, taking care of his kids all thehe time. his, his, s girls in mexico. they need to

9:12 pm
shortly after, beringer and another meteorologist drove north to the city to survey the richmond and golden gate park. they combed through the park and all of the fallen trees, and while there was damage, they did not see signs of a tornado. just as they were wrapping up, that's when they got the call to race down to scotts valley. and that's where they concluded a tornado did touch down. after surveying the damage, the team determined it was an ef1 strength due to the cars that flipped over. today, the question many are asking why was a tornado warning issued for san francisco and not for santa cruz county? with with the lack of ground verification and just taken into account what had happened earlier in the day, and having the knowledge from us surveying that the tornado actually didn't touch down in san francisco, i think that kind of prompted, you know, a little hesitancy after a long day of chasing storms in two places, learn more about these damaging
