the cleanup plus. without the ground based truth, without a spotter report, you know someone from the ground literally sending us a picture or calling the office. we have no way of telling if it's actually on the ground. a lack of warning. this morning we are getting answers from the national weather service as to why a tornado warning was not sent out to santa cruz county residents ahead of the rare weather event and awaiting his sentence. deliberations for nina nima momeni set to resume today. this is jurors way the first degree murder charge he's facing for killing cashapp founder bob lee. this is today in the bay. well, a very good monday morning to you, everyone. i'm scott mcgrew, and i'm ginger conejero saab. laura and marcus have the morning off. it is that week kicking off. really the holiday spirit. but we're going to get a we're going to get a look at the traffic. that holiday traffic
5:02 am
has the spirit. but firste're going to take a look at that forecast with meteorologist kari hall. it's been so busy here in the weather department. i mean yeah, those storms over the weekend. and now we're tracking a new storm system arriving in the bay area, bringing more rain to the already saturated north bay. and we're seeing some pretty widespread rain here. and there are some pockets of some heavy rain that we're seeing just north of santa rosa, as well as parts of northern napa county. as we get a closer look, we can see the rain is coming down from bodega bay to santa rosa and extending over toward yountville and farther to the north, as well as down to petaluma and now approaching novato. this is a part of the next storm system that will be in and out of here quickly. that's the good thing, is that we're not expxpecting ts to have a major impact. opening up the picture, we can see there's still several more storms developing out in the pacific, but a lot of them will take a more northerly turn and avoid the bay area after today. so we are going to see this wave of
5:03 am
rain coming through over the next couple of hours. by 9 to 10:00, it is still raining across much of the north bay and into the south bay, but by 430 during that evening commute, we're expecting things to clear out. so we will have several more hours of this rain, more wet weather coming in. to start out the week, we'll be tracking what to expect for the rest of the week coming up. but mike, you've been seeing some police activity. yeah, that's the one blip on the radar right now. we do expect things to lighten up after the last hurrah for the work traffic, probably tomorrow and wednesday. but right now, light traffic as we expect. the issue is on 280 southbound. i've been watching this for about a half hour. police activity declared right around westboro boulevard. you see that a number of lanes, three lanes, perhaps are impacted by an unspecified activity. we're tracking that in the newsroom. but you do see the slow drive on 280 south coming through that portion of south san francisco. over here, 101 is completely clear. so is el camino. so you do have your options if you want to avoid
5:04 am
that highway 35 as well, coming through that portion of the bay, a smooth drive. there may be a crash around san pablo and we see some fog. that's a note for highway four and for 580. back to you. all right, mike, thanks. well, the cleanup continues in scotts valley from the rare tornado over the weekend, which left one person critically injured. the tornado was an ef one that is small by comparison, maybe to what they see back east, but still a tornado. new video capturing its force traveled about 30 yards across part of downtown scotts valley, sending a lot of debris flying through the air. flipped cars upside down, damaged businesses. some business owners belie the damage was not worse. we were worried about the business and you know, you couldn't get here because the power lines were down, power was off, you couldn't figigure outhat was going on. and, you know, again, you never expect something like a tornado to hit. tornado also damaged a classroom at scotts valley middle school. a pine tree fell on the roof. that classroom will be closed today, but schoollill go on as

planned. well, this morning, san francisco is still cleaning up after saturday's storm brought down a lot of trees in the city. so. nbc bay area's bob redell joins us live from downtown. and bob, over the weekend, the national weather service had its first ever tornado warning for san francisco. good morning, scott and ginger. you are correct. this was a first in recorded weather history here in the city of san francisco, because that incoming storm on saturday was so turbulent. that morning, the natnal weather service did issue its first ever tornado warning for san francisco, something that is common in places like the midwest, but unheard of here in the city. later that day, meteorologist dalton beringer, who works out of the weather services office in monterey, he came up to sf to investigate whether a tornado had in fact touched down here. and even though there was a lot of storm damage, he concluded there was no tornado that touched down in the city because of the way the trees here fell. they didn't
5:06 am
fall in a pattern indicative of tornado activity. now they ended up rushing. the meteorologist ended up rushing to scotts valley, where, as you mentioned, that tornado did actually touch down and cause serious damage. now, we asked why was a tornado warning issued for san francisco and not for scotts valley and santa cruz county? with the lack of ground verification and just taken into account what had happened earlier in the day, and having the knowledge from us surveying that the tornado actually didn't touch down in san francisco, i think that kind of prompted, you know, a little hesitancy. now, the city of san francisco is still cleaning up after saturday's storm, with reports of trees down in places like golden gate park, the presidio, the richmond district, the mission and bernal heights, among other locations. reporting live here in sf bob redell. today in the bay. thanks a lot, bob. well, still at work. pg&e crews working to try to restore power to some neighborhoods, which went dark during

couple of more dry hours for your commute. if you're up early and about to head out the door. but then we'll continue to see the rain into late morning as well as the afternoon, and we could pick up another half of an inch of rainfall to three quarters of an inch from mill valley to oakland, as well as san francisco into the tri-valley. that's where we're expecting the higher rainfall totals, about a quarter of an inch possible for los gatos, and 3/10 of an inch of rain possible for san jose. it will reach morgan hill a little bit later and then continue to weaken, so we're not expecting as much rain in the south county, but we'll talk about all of the impacts that we're expecting and what's ahead for the rest of the week. mike has a look at where we can get some gas for a little bit less. yeah. today's best ties the best in the bay in livermore. we've been talking about that all for the last two weeks, but we're going to call out the same price. 329 the best in livermore, the best in contra costa county as well, to call it concord ultra on clayton road. again, the best prices are starting to creep down in many

up for marin county as well. we're able to track this all with storm ranger. you have the same tool if you have the. nbc bay area app. you can click on the storm ranger icon and actually see exactly what our radar is picking up on. and we could see the reds and the yellows there in the north bay, indicating some heavier rain just north of santa rosa, as well as in parts of northern napa county. so we're going to see this picking up in intensity as it moves in, lasting for a few hours. and once again, we've been talking about how many storms we've had recently, how the ground is already saturated, there are more storms out there, but the storm track will start to lift to the north and will give us a break. so that's some good news. looking ahead for the rest of the week and our temperatures starting out chilly only in the low 40s right now for palo alto and walnut creek, it's 43 degrees 48 in san francisco, and the timeline of the rain for the rest of the bay area begins to pick up. during that main morning commute, 7 to 8:00, and then by 830 9:00, it's

moving into san jose as well as partrts of the south county. and then look at 415, 430 this afternoon. it's still cloudy, but at least the rain will be letting up and it's going to be a chilly day. so as you're standing in front of the closet getting dressed, lots of layers definitely. and make sure you grab that umbrella on the way out. as our temperatures today only make it into the low to mid 50s for the north bay, we will see a high of about 59. in san jose. that's one of the warmer spots. so we're all staying in the 50s, but looking a little bit warmer tomorrow. and that's going to be the trend as we go throughout the week. warming up, feeling nicer. upper 60s for the south bay by midweek. so that's going to be nice to have. and speaking of the cold weather, it is definitely very chilly in the sierra where we're getting another 2 to 5in of snow, very slick up there and they have at times had to close the roads or definitely have those chain controls in effect throughout the week. we are all dry all the

smoothly into and out of san francisco. give us a second to look ahead. we'll predict the traffic flow will be altered here for muni between 6 and 7 tonight. there's a menorah lighting over at jane warner plaza. i know the first night of hanukkah is not until the 25th, which is also christmas, but this is going on for the local festivities there, just on the edge of the castro. we'll look to the north bay as well. over the weekend, we had the smart system doing maintenance in preparation for some improvements, but then there was some storm damage, trees down andther issues going on. so they've extended the closures for the system, the smart train, the smart system is not moving this morning. it's closed until tuesday from best we know. but there's more rain coming. we'll keep tracking those updates. meanwhile, the rest of the bay shows a pretty predictable plan we have slowing for highway 37. some fog over here in contra costa county. but you see, those speed sensors are great. that slowing kicks off right here in san jose, as is usual here. just north of just south of oakland road. back to you. we'll check back in. thanks, mike. well, demanding a solution. ahead on

and mike. let's take a live look at capitol hill this morning. president elect donald trump's selection to lead the nation's health agencies is preparing to participate in a series of meetings this week. robert f kennedy jr is trying to drum up support ahead of formal confirmation hearings. that is where he is expected to face tough questions about his views on vaccines. this comes after reports a lawyer who is helping him build his team petitioned the fda to revoke approval of a polio vacne. kennedy's team responded to the reports, releasing a statement saying in part, quote, the polio vaccine should be available to the public thoughly and properly studied. 544 mounting questions this morning, after weeks of unknown drones flying around parts of the u.s, lawmakers in the capitol facing growing calls for action, with top democrat asking for a drone detection system today in the bay's brie jackson. following the political fallout on this

growing mystery. can you see it? questions swirling about mysterious flying objects reported in the skies over new york and new jersey. it is not the iranians. it is not the chinese. they aren't martians. our local people who have questions about these drones should not have to shake an eight ball to get an answer. the fbi has been investigating hundreds of reports of drones operating at night. investigators say they have seen no evidence that the sightings pose a national security or public safety threat. but the new york stewart international airport was forced to shut down its runways briefly because of drone activity. senator chuck schumer wants federal leaders to deploy technology, including robin radar systems, to better detect and track drones. if the technology exists for a drone to make it up into the sky. there certainly is the technology that can track the craft with precision and determine what the

heck is going on. lawmakers are demanding action. we need to know who's behind it. but right now, i think law enforcement seems to be the department of homeland security and the defense department are kind of all doing this and pointing at each other. the administration has repeatedly assured people that they are safe. however, one, we need a briefing for the members of the senate to figure out what's going on here. two we need more transparency. the sightings have residents, investigators and members of congress searching for answers. in washington brie jackson, nbc news. well, from the nation's highest court to the state supreme court justice ketanji brown jackson made her broadway debut over the weekend in a one night only role in an juliet. i like it, too. i think what i like about it is that i am having a very strongly negative reaction to it. like i hate it,

which makes me think it must be brilliant. not something you see every day, right? jackson has frequently talked about her love for the stage in her memoir. the justice shared that in her application essay to harvard, she wrote that she wanted to become the first black female supreme court justice to appear on a stage. and guess what? yeah, she did it. that's so cool. it's fun to see them have fun. it is. yeah. makes them more human outside of the opinions that they write. right. and the black robes and the black robes. see them come to come to real life. well, christmas is just over a week away. that's right. way to wake up on a monday. yeah. somehow, some way, you're not totally in the holiday spirit yet. little big town aims to get you there with its christmas at the opry special tonight on nbc. here's mark barger. yeah. my soul. one thing i know, little big town's been so by over the years. one

5:51 am
ago reinstated a cursive requirement for grades one through six. but before that, for more than ten years, schools almost everywhere tried to erase the idea of writing in cursive, which many experts now call a mistake. now, states are really starting to see that cursive really helps the brain activity. and currently, right now we have 24 states that have mandated cursive into their legislation. that's up from, i believe, ten states in the last ten years. well, she also says cursive knowledge is really a generational thing with many people in their early 20s and early 30s having the least developed handwriting skills. now, all this gave us an idea. so if you thought that you would get off easy in interning here at today in the bay, well guess what guys? think again. we recently had several today in the bay interns do the cursive

challenge, and we should point out, well, they all scare. they all scored fairly high marks. i'm taking a look at grace there. that is not. yeah i have. well, she's doing it with her left hand too. my goodness. yeah, but you said there were ten years. so if there are interns, most likely they had cursive. they had training. right? yeah. i'm thinking about my son. he's in the seventh grade. he did not have that in school. and now that they're starting it back up, he kind of missed it. so are you going to still have this gap of kids who just moved through as a generation? yeah. they didn't know of course. i will say most a lot of school administrators would say, listen, we got a certain amount of time to teach these kids. is cursive one of those things you're saying brain development, which is interesting. very, very. but at the cost of what? right, right. that was part of the whole common core schiff. they were focusing on different aspects, and now they're realizing, yeah, but even things like the constitution or grandma's recipe cards, you can't read those cursive. that's true. my mom only writes in cursive. she
5:53 am
doesn't even know how to print. so she thinks she writes in code. maybe it's a way of talking above the kids. you could just write things on a whiteboard and you'd be like, yeah, we should do that. yeah. christmas list. i will say handwriting was so important for my mom. she made me rewrite my homework in cursive until it looked nice. and so that is something that i will say, handwriting challenge. bring it on. right. that's the one thing i can bring. all right, let's check the weather with karen. all right. well, we're starting out this morning with some rain that's going to be moving in, but we're still trying to clean up from the storm we had over the weekend. let's talk about how much rain we measured. and the winner goes to mount diablo. almost six inches of rainfall over the weekend. and marin came in over four inches of rain. santa rosa three and a half and over two in san francisco as well as sunnyvale. much of the bay area had rain totals like this, anywhere from an inch and a half to two inches of rainfall. and here we go again. the storm ranger is lighting up
5:54 am
with some reds and yellows over the north bay, where the rain is pretty steady, and moving through much of sonoma and northern napa county, as well as northern marin county. now. and we're going to see the activity getting heavier for some of the spots that are seeing some green, like yountville and novato, as well as fairfax. the rain will be picking up here within the next few minutes. all of this surging in with a fairly quick moving system that will be with us through the morning into the afternoon, and there is a lot more activity out there in the pacific, several more storms developing, but this activity will be lifting back to the north and affecting the northwest and giving the bay area a break. so we are still going to have several hours throughout today with some rain coming through. we're at 10 to 11:00. seeing the rain moving into the tri-valley, the east bay and the peninsula, and then eventually into the south bay during the morning commute and then starting to taper off with some very spotty activity for the afternoon. but we may pick
5:55 am
up another half to three quarters of an inch of rainfall. the heavier amounts will be in the north bay from mill valley over toward oakland and dublin. that's where we could see some very high amounts of rainfall, but we're watching a different kind of flooding. the last day of king tides in these areas shaded in green, which includes those low lying areas, creeks and streams that kind of feed into the bay where the tide levels will be higher by late morning. and you want to make sure that you're also watching for that park and ride in the north bay, where we very often see that flooding the rest of the week, it's looking dry once again, storm track staying to the north. but then on saturday rain will be back. and i know that's a very busy day for shopping and trying to wrap up those last minute holiday gifts and getting things done. we are going to have at least much of the week for the best weather that we'll see. warming temperatures and a mix of sun and clouds. by sunday, it's going to be drying out once again. and in san francisco once again. king tides today. but a mix of sun and clouds and warmer
5:56 am
temperatures the rest of the week. and mike, you're seeing that monday morning commute building at the bay bridge. yeah, but it's a little slower, a little more gradual than most mondays. we talked about the last hurrah. as we get toward the end of the year. schools start vacation. but right now a lot of high schools at least, and, and, and middle schools are having their final exams before that break at the end of the year. and so we do have a lot of families still in town, but it will continue to gradually build lighterommutes. tuesday will probably see a good burst of traffic, folks getting in for some of the last meetings before they get some vacation. we do see some slowing on highway four again, a gradual build over at the bay bridge. it is not full. it typically is by this time of morning. highway 37 a little bills remember those wet roadways in the north bay? some fog over here, including vasco road where it combines with the build for some slowing. back to you. mike. thank you. happening now. former speaker of the house nancy pelosi is still recovering this morning after she was injured during a trip to europe over the weekend. she went underwent hip replacement surgery in germany. this comes
