york after an airport was forced to briefly shut down its runways because of drone activity. >> in just a moment, we're going to show you the technology that everybody is so concerned about. >> we brought in a drone, confirmed by the experts, to be similar to those seen in the sightings, so you can see what everybody is talking about. we start with tom costello who covers aviation for us. tom, good morning. >> good morning, guys. the fbi, faa and homeland security say in many of these cases people are seeing regularly scheduled planes, helicopters or even recreational drones. but there are so many sightings, it's causing some people to panic. >> you see it? >> reporter: across the northeast this morning, high alert and high anxiety. across the northeast this morning, high alert and high anxiety. >> there is two more right there. >> reporter: as the federal government sends extra help to new york and new jersey where the governor has now been briefed by the fbi. the first drone was spotted there nearly a month ago. an fbi official says more than 5,000 drone sightings have been reported.

but there is still no single answer to what's behind the st sightings. >> no state can become a wild west of drone activity. >> reporter: fbi, dhs and faa officials other the weekend say a large percentage appear to be normal, commercial, private and government air traffic confused for drones. but many americans and lawmakers remain wary. the senate majority leader chuck schumer urging federal agencies to use drone technology like the robin radar. >> you should not have to shake an eight ball to get an answer. >> reporter: after runways were closed at newark stewart airport friday night due to drone activity, new york's governor says a detection system isn't enough. posting sunday congress must pass a law that will give us the power to deal didirectly wh the drones. currently there is no national

drone tracking system, making it difficult to identify who is responsible for all l these unmanned sightings. homeland security director al han doe mayorkas offering one possible explanation. an faa policy last year allowing drones to fly at night. >> that may be one of the reasons why now people are seeing more drones than they did before. i want to assure the american public that we are on it. >> reporter: police in boston say two men were arrested over the weekend for flying a drone dangerously close to logan airport. and the faa is confirming its now received multiple reports of people shining lasers at planes in air space over new york, new jersey and pennsylvania. >> they were definitely me. it stayed on me for a period of time it's definitely off putting. >> reporter: while many residents remain unsure and on edge, what to make of so many mysterious sightings. >> sort of scary. i don't know, i mean, i don't know what to think about it. >> i think it is definitely an overaction. i don't think it's a big deal. >> the veteran drone experts say they believe the reports have taken on a life of their own, creating a bit of a public panic. they insist there is no indication of any criminal,

foreign government involvement whatsoever. they're not down -- they're not trying to eliminate the fact that there are drones up there. but the bottom line is they say so far we see nothing nefarious. >> it seems like it's legal to fly drones? >> in many, many cases if not most cases. >> what about the suggestion that some are making, tom, that they should take matters in their own hands -- >> shoot them down. generally thought to be a bad idea. >> seems like it. >> if, in fact, what we are seeing people mistaking legitimate air travel, helicopters, planes, legitimate drones, you start shooting them down, you could kill somebody. not only that, if you shoot down a drone and it falls on somebody, you could kill them. please, please don't do this. >> yeah. i would think so. tom, thank you. you'll come back in the next hour. you brought show and tell today. >> i did. >> a giant drone. we'll get -- there it is right in our studio. >> it is a giant drone. >> it's big. it looks scary. >> it does. tom, thank you. also this morning, new developments in that closely-watched ceo murder case

as the fight to extradite the accused gunman from pennsylvania to new york intensifies. nbc's stephanie gosk joins us here with the latest. good morning. >> good morning. some experts believe luigi mangione will soon be extradited to new york. now a matter of when. this as weearn about the 26-year-old's time in prison so far and how police managed to track him down. accused killer luigi mangione remains in a pennsylvania prison cell but new york officials say they are eager to extradite him. a source tells nbc news as soon as this week a grand jury in new york could indictment the man suspected of murdering unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson. a potential indictment could bolster the manhattan d.a.'s extradition case. the 26-year-old just hired a new defense team. his attorney spoke about the case and mangione's defee on cnn before being hired as his lawyer. >> there might be a not guilty by reason of insanity defense that they'll be thinking about

because the evidence is going to be so overwhelming that he did what he did. >> reporter: while authorities are revealing more about what led up to his arrest. after the suspect was first reported missing by his mother last month, law enforcement officials say a san francisco police officer recognized similarities in the images of mangione in new york and the individual in the missing person report and contacted the fbi. two law enforcement sources familiar with the matter telling nbc news that authorities reached out to mangione's mother two days later who told them the man in the images could be her son. just one day later, mangione was taken into custody at a mcdonald's in pennsylvania. according to the pennsylvania department of corrections, mangione, who is not being held in solitary confinement has eaten every meal in his 15 x 6 foot concrete cell. he does not have a tv and is not yet interacting with other inmates. >> he may only be there for a matter of weeks. for his short stay there, he's going to be treated like any

otother inmate. >> mangione was visited by three attorneys on friday. two from new york, regarding his case there, as well as tom dickey, a lawyer handling his criminal charges in pennsylvania. dickey maintained his client plans to plead not guilty to all charges in both states. >> steph, thank you. we turn now the trump transition. the president-elect expected to map out more goals for his administration today after a public show w of support over t weekend for his embattled choice to lead the defense department. garrett haake in west palm for us. garrett, good morning. >> reporter: hey, savannah. good morning to you. the president-elect set to make what his team is calling a major economic announcement here this morning in south florida. cnbc reporting it's a $100 billion investment from the japanese firm softbank. mr. trump opening up mar-a-lago to the cameras for the first time since his election victory this morning. all as a transition tries to show it's hitting the ground running and getting its team in place by inauguration day.

president-elect donald trump publicly standing by his embattled pick for secretary of defense. appearing with pete hegseth in a host of other top republicans at the annual army/navy game this weekend in maryland. hegseth has faced a barrage of critical media reports after mr. trump first announced his selection last month, including a sexual assault claim for which was investigated but never charged. and reports of excessive drinking, all of which he denies. republican senators now largely rallying to his defense. senator lindsey graham saying on "meet the press" that hegseth would release the sexual assault accuser from a nondisclosure agreement. >> he told me he would release her from that agreement. yeah. just think about what we're talking about. i would want to know if anybody nominated for a high-level job in washington legitimately assaulted somebody. >> reporter: today another top trump pick will make his first appearance on capitol hill, health and human services secretary selection robert f. kennedy jr., slated to meet with several republican senators.

kennedy, long a skeptic of vaccines and vaccine mandates, under new scrutiny over a "new york times" report that kennedy attorney aaron sooery helping him fill other federal health roles took part in a 2022 effort to petition the federal government to revoke approval of the polio vaccine. in a lengthy response online, seary calling the article, quote a hit piece. mitch mcconnell, a childhood polio survivor, firing off a critical statement on friday. efforts to undermine public confidence in proven cures are not just uninformed, they're dangerous. >> rfk jr. said -- >> let's go through and have more science and study more to make sure the safety and efficacy is there. and that's what president trump is saying. >> reporter: it all comes as the president-elect notched a major legal victory with abc agreeing to pay15 million to a future trump presidential foundation and museum. with the network and anchor george stephanopoulos saying they, quote, regret statements regarding mr. trump during a

march interview which he called defamatory. and abc news spokesperson responded to that settlement with an email saying we are pleased that the parties have reached an agreement to dismiss the lawsuit on the terms in the court filing. as for hegseth and the nda, his attorney tells me this morning the accuser is welcome to speak out but saying there will be legal consequences if she lies. savannah? >> garrett, thank you very much. let's go to middle east now and the political transition that is unfolding in syria. u.s. officials announcing they have made direct contact with the rebel group that led the overthrow against the assad regime. we're also hearing from the mother of missing american austin tice who disappeared in syria more than a decade ago. richard engel joins us from damascus. hey, richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, hoda. it's been a week since bashar al assad has been overthrown. here in damascus, life is returning.

christians have resumed services, shops are open. but the profound impact on the region is far from settled. the israeli military this morning dropped a bomb on what it says was an ammunition depot in syria. israel is worried new islamist government may be hostile so it's disarming it preemptively. this as syrians are trying to put their lives back together after decades living under bashar al assad, whose dict dictatorship is accused of killing and disappearing hundreds of thousands. and everyday now, syrians come to this square in damascus to hang posters of missing relatives. this man is looking for his nephew, oday. >> do you think he's alive? >> i don't know. >> reporter: most of the missing were arrested after protests against assad began a decade ago. she handed me this. please, please, put this one on camera.

everyone here hoping beyond hope. but what's so disturbing is not a single person here has said that they've received a phone ll. american journalist austin tice has been missing for 12 years. last week a fellow detainee guided me to what heaid was tice's cell. this weekend on "meet the press" tice's mother confirmed that was the place. >> we were able to verify that he was. as far as, you know, of course we have incredible respect for the people that are going in to the cells in the prisons. that must be very challenging. you do have some feelings about what richard saw. and we're just so glad that he went in there. and we're so glad that he found it. it mattered. it matred to us hugely. >> reporter: and some happy reunions are happening. this morning, we met two cousins, broken out of prison

attention more than 30 years ago. and even though hockman's work is not done, what he has seen so far could signal a tough road ahead for those brothers. with the me mendes's brother push for freedom now officially on his desk, skepticism from los angeles county's new top prosecutor, specifically pushing back on a key claim from erik and lyle's defense attorney. >> if they were the menendez sisters, they would not be in custody today. >> reporter: in a new interview "deadline" nathan hockman rejecting the notion that the years of sexual abuse the menendez brother's say they suffered at the hands of their father was not taken seriously at their 1995 trial when they were convicted of murdering their parents. saying, quote, i think it's a bit simplistic to say that society back in the '90s didn't recognize sexual abuse of young boys or men. adding, the issues that we'll be looking at for the trial will be whether or not these two young men faced an immediate threat to

their life, how they got to the point is irrelevant for the trial. over the weekend, erik and lyle's cousin speaking out. >> i hope that he will broaden his view a little bit and see that that is a relevant factor of this case. >> reporter: the brothers have long maintained their parent's murders were the product of a horrific childhood, filled with abuse. while prosecutors argued they wanted their inheritance money. >> we did it! >> reporter: and while a netflix series and other documentaries thrust the brother back into the spotlight, hockman says in a new interview with lester holt that the fate of erik and lyle may not go hand in hand. >> do you leave open the possibility their cases could be handled differently? that they would be split? >> while they're called the menendez brother's case, there's an erik menendez case and lyle menendez case. we'll look at each case separately. which is the way they actually should be handled. >> reporter: hock man's recommendation expected to come

ginger conejero saab. here's a look at our top stories this morning. jurors resumed deliberations today in the murder trial of nima momeni. he's accused in the deadly stabbing of cashapp founder, bob lee in san francisco. this will the seventh day of deliberations. jurors are weighing first degree murder charges. but if they cannot reach a consensus on that charge, they can still consider lesser charges. the jury met last thursday. they are scheduled to reconvene at 130 this afternoon. good morning. i'm bob redell in san francisco, where the city is still cleaning up after the saturday storm. that brought down a lot of trees and the city's first ever tornado warning. a meteorologist with the national weather service based out of monterey, actually came up here on saturday to see whether a tornado had, in fact, touched down here in the city. even though there was a lot of storm damage, they concluded there was no tornado in the city because of the way the trees fell. they did not fall in a pattern indicative of tornado activity.

drone. it particularly good for aerial cinematography and things of that nature. but this is the thing you might use also if you are out doing surveys, if you are out there, for example, trying to determine if there is an if there is any issue with utility lines, et cetera, et cetera. the bigger the drone, the shorter the amount of time they could spend actually up there in the air. it is controlled by a controller right here. it has two joy sticks on this one right here. and this is how one controller would be able to essentially make sure pilot this drone in line of sight. in line of sight. >> how close do you have to be

to the drone, tom, to fly it? could you do it from state, another country? >> pretty difficult. the average range for a consumer drone, which you might buy online, it's about half a mile for a very basic drone. maybe seven miles for a really advanced drone. for the most part, you got to fly it within your line of sight. so as for the flight time, if this drone was flying, for example, the maximum weight would be 55 pounds. that's according to the faa, and the battery is only going to last 10 to 12 minutes in total. you can't keep it up there long. the smaller drones half pound, pound and a half, they might fly 25 minutes or so. maybe a half an hour. but, really, the shorter flights are what is much more common. for the kind of drones we think are up in the skies over new jersey and new york. and let's be clear, we don't think -- at least people i talk to, they don't think that this is the average drone size in the skies over new jersey. this gives you a sense of how big they can get. >> how does this one compare to what folks are telling you have

been spotted over -- >> first of all, let me make the point. you can categorize drones in sizes. so we have really small and really big. it is all about weight and capacity. we have nano drones, really small. as tiny as you can imagine. almost like an insect. and then you could have small drones, as you see, up to 12 inches. again recreational here. and then you could get up to another a foot in length. and that often includes -- there you go four feet, medium-sized drones. large drones is what we're looking at here. and go beyond commercial grade, up to a military grade drone, which you are obviously not going to see in the skies over the east coast over the united states. but this is really a mega drone size. we're not going to turn the propellers on because we all want to keep our heads this morning. >> yeah. >> yeah. >> wow, that's incredible. >> these must be pretty expensive, too. is it t legal toly these things? >> totally legal. first of all you -- anybody can get a drone. if it's under a half a pound, you don't have to register it.

you have to keep it under 400 feet, according to the faa rules and regs. and you must say three miles or so away from an airport. they must be registered. if you are over half a pound, over 250 grams or so. now, again, this is -- if you are using it for commercial purposes you have to register them with the faa and you also have to get a license. our nbc news guys that are flying drones, they have to get this pilot license. they're not just a hobbyist. and you have to understand what the rules of the air are as described and prescribed by the faa. the faa does require you take a basic license test in order to fly not only this drone but a smaller drone over a half a pound in size. that's the big challenge, right, making sure that the people flying them are flying them according to faa regs. lower than 400 feet, line of sight. you cannot lose sight of it. and then you also have to steer clear of airports and utility towers and the like.

>> let's get to your news at 8:00 on a monday morning. we'll start with those mysterious drone sightings along the east coast. the demand for answers is intensifying this morning. nbc's tom costello is our aviation expert. he is here with the very latest. tom, good morning. >> a lot of questions, not a lot of answers right now. the federal government says it is right now adding more resources to new jersey and new york to help out and try to get some answers. the bottom line is the fbi says so far they have had 5,000 reports, sightings of drones. that doesn't mean that multiple people aren't reporting the same drone. of those 5,000, they really need to get some answers on. they on identified 100. the faa official says, this is interesting, when you overlay a map of the drone sightings, they very often line right up with nearby airport takeoff and landing routes in and out of new york or a new jersey airport. and very often, we can tell you there is legitimate traffic, planes, helicopters and real legitimate commercial drones.

there are 1 million registered drones nationwide. it's just exploded in popularity. but there is no national tracking system to identify which drone right this very minute is being flown by whom. you have to register the drone, but not a national tracking system. and the faa recently allowed nighttime drone flights. as a result, they suggest this may be part of what's happening here. more people flying their drones, hobbyists flying at night and the fbi is suggesting there may be also a a little bit of, my words not their's, public hysteria involved here. in other words, people are all looking for drones. pretty soon you think you see something. in fact, it's a helicopter, a plane, a starlink satellite going overhead. >> it's superman. >> all of the above. >> but they're not dismissing this. they are very concerned about it. and they're investigating. >> okay. >> thank you, tom. appreciate it. former house speaker nancy pelosi is recovering this morning after undergoing a hip replacement surgery in germany.

we're back at 8:44 with our "inside the game" series where we highlight the nfl. >> yes. this morning we will introduce you to the seattle seahawks' live mascot, an augger hawk. one of the team's most valued members. >> liz kreutz got some up close and personal time with him. hey, liz. >> hey, guys. good morning. i have to be honest, i never thought i would enjoy spending this much time with a bird. his name is tama which means thunder. he is one of three live mascots in the nfl. as i learned firsthand, he is definitely not your average hawk. in fact, some might even say this job was his destiny. the seattle seahawks' mascot doesn't run on to the field, he flies. at each home game, this 19-year-old hawk leads his team

on to the gridiron, firing up the players and the crowd. but when he's not flying around the stadium, he spends his days 300 miles away, across the majestic cascade mountains in spokane, washington. this is a bird of prey. to be this calm and friendly is remarkable. >> a lot of people don't respect that. >> reporter: tama's owners have been there with him since day one when the seahawks organization decided more than two decades ago they wanted a live hawk to represent the team. >> reporter: what was the first thing that went through your mind? >> well, it's never been done before. >> reporter: the seahawks needed a largbird who could handle all that stadium chaos, tama passed the test with flying colors. now in his 20th season, he just might be one of the most valued members of the team. >> there are players that need to touch him for luck before the game. >> they don't dare start the game before touching him.

>> he spent a year training him for the role but knew tama was different from other hawks from the start. >> he's got a job. he does his job really well. if you're around a lot of different birds of prey, or just animals, they don't have to let everybody touch them. >> reporter: since then, tama and his owners have been on quite the wild ride from being recognized by the washington house of representatives to going to super bowl xlviii where tama wasn't the only live mascot in the stadium, to the occasional moments where he has a mind of his own. >> he just jump and got loose. now i'm watching him flying around. and flying around. and all of a sudden he just goes up and he lands on the head of one of our fans. everybody around him has their hands on him because they finally got to pet him. and they're going, no, don't take him. he chose us to go to. >> good. >> leading up to game day, he has his own training program, which i got to see f firsthand >> he's training just like the players. >> oh, yeah.

well. good morning everyone. it is 856 i'm scott mcgrew. cleanup continues in scotts valley from that rare tornado over the weekend left one person critically injured. the tornado was category ef one. you can see the force in this video traveling about 30 yards across part of downtown scotts valley sent a lot of debris flying through the air, flipped cars upside down, damaged businesses. the tornado also damaged a classroom at scotts valley middle school. a pine tree fell on the roof. now that classroom will be closed, but school is open as planned. pg&e crews are making good progress when it comes to restoring power. the utility now reporting about 3000 outages, down from 17,000
