the deepening drone mystery over the northeast. heads to capitol hill. we're live from washington with the growing calls for action and transparency. also, across the bay area, a foggy start to the morning commute. meteorologist kari hall is tracking the dangerous driving conditions, and when you head out, what you'll likely see. this is today in the bay. a whole lot of nothing. what you're going to see. i can't just move it. just move it out of the way. good morning to you on this tuesday. i'm marcus washington, and i'm laura garcia. we'll check in with mike because that visibility could be a concern for commuters out there. kari has a look at our forecast. yeah, we're starting out with low visibility all around the bay area. after the recent rain that we've had. this is a live look in san rafael, where a lot of the clouds and fog is just above the roadway, but you are still having that reduced visibility as you're driving to work this morning there, we're seeing it down to about a quarter of a mile in san

francisco. it's zero. and then for the tri-valley, it's said about two and a half miles. once again, it's just above the roadway there. and three quarters of a mile in concord. while in san jose, we're also seeing the really dense fog and a look at walnut creek, where the headlights are traveling there and making it okay. but we are going to see the fog linger through 10:00 this morning. it's going to be with us for quite a while as our temperatures will be cool, but just a touch warmer than it was yesterday as we get some sunshine this afternoon. so in oakland look for a high of 62 today. it will also be 62 in novato and napa and san francisco. looking at a high today of 60 degrees, it's going to gradually warm over these next few days. so we'll talk more about that coming up, mike. tracking the impact of all of that fog. yeah, fog is our headline. so watch those headlights as you have the fog. and these are the low clouds kari was talking about. we're okay on the deck for 101. but, look, we don't usually see this

5:04 am
ahead of the verdict? good morning, marcus and laura. bob lee's ex-wife krista says there is nervous energy before the reading of the verdict today, but she says her family knows the truth. they believe nima momeni killed bob lee wherever or despite where the jury might fall in their verdict. now, she shared several photos with us. i want to share you some of those. share with you some of those photos she shared one of her and bob lee from about 20 or so years ago. she told me they first met at a local spot in saint louis. their first date came weeks after that, and they celebrated that date every year for 20 years. they shared two kids and they maintained a very cle relationship. even after splitting in 2018. now, krista shares, bob's birthday would have been on friday, and he would have been 45 years old. now, krista and her family will be at the courthouse this morning. i also assume that
5:05 am
members of nima momeni family will be anxiously anticipating that reading of the verdict as well. the mom of nima momeni has been there as well. every day throughout these proceedings, marcus and laura and we've been waiting for a while. the jury is deliberating for seven days now. do you think it speaks to where they lean in today's verdict at all? yeah, well, legal experts say that the amount of time that a jury deliberates may be indicative of where they lean. we spoke with steven clark, our legal expert, who has been following this case closely. he says there's a lot of evideou fx week trial, which included testimony detailing that drug fueled party scene of san francisco's tech elite. they heard testimony from momeni own sister, kesar, who was the key piece in connecting lee and nima, and they heard from the defendant himself, who says he acted in self defense the night that lee was fatally stabbed. now prosecutors, they laid out
5:06 am
their case, saying momeni fatally stabbed lee to avenge sexual assault claims from his sister and a man that lee introduced to her. they presented testimony that said momeni dna was overwhelmingly on the knife or what is believed to be the murder weapon. and he said, they said i should say that he fled the scene and he never called police. now the jury was instructed to unanimously decide whether or not they believe momeni is guilty of first degree murder. if they could not, they would unanimously agree he is not guilty of that charge and then move down to lesser charges. we're likely to see a verdict somewhere between second degree murder and voluntary manslaughter. it will be interesting to see what the jurors thought of momeni testimony for the defense. putting momeni on the stand was a high stakes gamble, but it was a risk worth taking. now, laura marcus, irregardless of where today's verdict falls, bob lee's ex-wife krista says that this

may be just part of the bigger legal picture. she plans on taking momeni mother, his sister and his brother in law to court. we're live in san francisco, ginger conejero saab. today in the bay. we will be watching. certainly, ginger. thank you for that. 506 for you right now, the man accused of killing seven farm workers in half moon bay is expected in front of a judge in a matter of hours. a hearing is scheduled to be scheduled to set a date. this is for chung. lee zhao's jury trial has been in custody since the arrest in january of 2023. now he has pleaded not guilty despite confessing to that shooting. during a jailhouse interview with nbc bay area's janelle wang. today's hearing is scheduled for nine this morning just into our newsroom. a top russian general is dead after a bombing attack in moscow. ukraine's security service claims its operatives carried out the mission one day after it opened a criminal investigation against him. the general served as chief of russia's nuclear,

bay. and as we take a look at walnut creek, you can see it's foggy there as well. it's also a chilly start in the fog will linger a lot longer with san jose still seeing it overhead and also reducing our visibility on the roadways through 8:00. by 10:00 we're seeing it lifting and then gradually clearing out as we go throughout the day. and temperatures in the low 60s. we'll be in the upper 50s for martinez this afternoon. still cool for the inland parts of the east bay, where that fog lingers a lot longer. and in santa rosa, look for a high of 62. it will be slightly warmer tomorrow, with some of us heading to the lower 70s. mike, that fog may be a surprise for some. yeah, because we're talking about the fog, usually along the coast where it is there up in san francisco, daly city. but look, it's over on the eastern side of that part of the peninsula. and then creeping all the way down the last hour has seen this really register. remember, we've got the road weather index, which takes the weather data. we share the systems with kari, and that takes the weather data and

5:17 am
month. banning tiktok actually got its start during the first trump administration, but mr. trump has since changed his mind, saying publicly a ban on tiktok would help mark zuckerberg and facebook, with whom trump has issues, though meta, you'll remember, just contributed $1 million to trump's inauguration. one way or the other, president trump cannot overturn the ban alone. he would need congress to reverse itself. trump met with softbank's masayoshi son at mar a lago yesterday, where masayoshi son promised to invest billions in american businesses, much of it in tech. we know this investor very well in silicon valley. he's spent billions here already on all kinds of startups. here's the president elect, and we've just concluded a very productive meeting. and today, i am thrilled to announce that softbank will be investing $100 billion in america, creating 100,000 american jobs at a minimum. and he's doing
5:18 am
this because he feels very optimistic about our country since the election. now, if this sounds familiar, the same pair made the same or at lst similar announcement at trump tower shortly before trump became president, the first time. to be clear, a venture capitalist does not need to stand alongside an incoming president tannounce a new fund. it's not mr. trump's money, and the bank doesn't need his okay to make the investments. but why wouldn't you? masayoshi son kept his promise spent wildly, particularly in the bay area. some ideas were winners, uber comes to mind, and some were a giant waste of softbank's money. investments like wework, the one that always stands out in my head is his investment in a dog walking company called wag. somebody come to your house sort of like a doordash and walk your dog. softbank sank $300 million into wag, a business not that different than the dog walking business you might have thought up when you were a kid. a third

into the end of the week. looking at our temperatures, it is still a little bit milder because of the fog. and that's that's keeping our morning start in the 40s for the most part. we're at 47 in sonoma, 50 now in san mateo, and it's 49 in fremont, pleasanton checking in at 48 degrees in morgan hill. it's also 48 and foggy, 100% humidity. so you know what that means as you're in the mirror this morning getting ready for the day, don't even bother with curling your hair. it's going to be foggy and very humid. and then we start to see things clearing out as we go into late morning, as well as the afternoon, and temperatures just a touch warmer than yesterday, with some low to mid 60s. and tomorrow is even warmer with the south county making it into the low 70s in gilroy, while most of the rest of the bay area will be in the 60s and then going into the end of the week, we're looking at some slightly warmer temperatures and continued

11in of snow from south lake tahoe to tahoe city. truckee about 12in expected kingvale could see 18in of snow and 21 at kirkwood. so we are going to see some more active weather going into the week of christmas. but at least for now, we are taking a break from all of the storms and seeing it heading farther to the north. but if you will be traveling up to the pacific northwest for the holiday, maybe even this upcoming weekend, expect it to be a very slow getting there and also plan ahead for any delays. mike, you're seeing cars. more cars, more fog at the bay bridge. yeah, both are coming together and that's a tough time for the commute. i'll talk about that in a second. but i-80 here is what we're looking at. i-80 through the sierra. i just checked cars are being held in placer county at nyack because of a truck crash heading over towards state line truckee tahoe. so keep that in mind. i'll keep watching that, and i'll let you know if there's anything extended they talk about. but we are looking over here toward the commute through the bay area, and we're
5:42 am
noticing more of this yellow along i-80 highway 24. we're looking at highway four as well, and the corridor 680 heading south through walnut creek. they're all going to get some heavy fog. you're going to have this issue for visibility all along the east shore freeway coming across carquinas, benicia bridge, the richmond san rafael bridge, and across the north bay as well. that's the yellow highlighting. remember, we take our weather data and we can translate to the conditions on the roads itself. better news for the system. smart system is back in service this morning. yesterday they had to extend the maintenance work as well as some repair work and clearing some debris from the weekend. storm damage. that's all back and they should be okay. if you had to extend any expense because of the lack of smart yesterday, you can file that report on their website and they can possibly reimburse you if it qualifies. over here we have the last day of the manzanita lower parking lot that's also closed because of the high tides, not necessarily the rain, but that contributed to more water in the area. meanwhile, we're looking at a smooth drive, but that fog is a factor for the south bay as
5:43 am
well. back to you. thank you mike. well, just ahead on today in the bay, looking for answers after the tragic school shooting in wisconsin. police revealing new details about the shooter and what happened before she opened fire. also overnight, new details on the critically injured victims and what seems like a made for social media crisis. those mysterious drones will have the very latest. plus, moving the bay area forward ahead of the holidays. the new plea for help. this is from one charity as they work to make this a special christmas for families in need. and if you want to help give back this season, you can. our nourishing neighbors food drive is underway. it's an easy way to help families in need. the next time you're at your local safeway, you can donate $10 at checkout. that money benefits bay area food bank, serving hundreds of thousands of people. our nourishing neighbors drive runs through christmas day. a lot more news ahead. it's 543. you're watching

as we take a look at what to expect in cupertino. it's going to be foggy through 8:00 and temperatures very chilly, upper 40s. and then as we go throughout the day, it's going to quickly clear out. we wil have a very nice but chilly day, as our highs here only briefly make it into the low 60s. we'll get a look at some slightly warmer temperatures and more sunshine in the microclimate forecast coming up. yeah, it's
5:47 am
still going to be foggy because it's foggy right now and many patches along the bay. here's palo alto peninsula stretching down toward the south bay. that fog is registering on the road weather index. we'll check out those speeds and other cameras. see your conditions coming up. thank you very much. kari and mike. it is 546 right now. and this morning, multiple people remain in the hospital following a deadly shooting in wisconsin. police say the shooter was a 15 year old female student. they're now identifying her as natalie rubino, who went by the name samantha. investigators say she killed a student and a teacher during study hall at abundant life christian school in madison right now, then turned the gun on herself. officers are now focusing on finding a motive and are combing through her home as part of the investigation. they're still going through evidence in the home, and so we do not have a complete list of the things that were collected from the home. again, that was

done with the consent of the parents. six other people were injured in the shooting. two students are in critical condition at last check. the four other victims are expected to survive. 547 right now, the judge in donald trump's new york felony fraud case says he will not dismiss those charges. scott mcgrew president elect trump. they're his lawyers anyway. they argue that he was immune from prosecution. right? that was their argument in so many words. remember, the supreme court had ruled that presidents cannot be prosecuted for crimes they commit while performing their official duties. but you see the flaw in their argument right away. donald trump was not president when the crimes took place. trump was running for president when he made the payoffs to stormy daniels and others, and then tried to keep those transactions a secret later. there's a separate question as to whether evidence gathered after trump became president should have been used to convict him. trump's pick to run america's health agencies

robert kennedy jr, making another round of meetings in the senate office building in washington. kennedy now says he supports the use and distribution of the polio vaccine after it was revealed a member on his team had petitioned the fda to pull the vaccine from use parts of the government could shut down this weekend unless congress passes a funding bill or a temporary measure to once again kick the can down the road. here's senate minority leader mitch mcconnell on the senate floor warning we need to fix this. extending government funding by friday is our top priority. shutting the government down is a one way ticket to needless disruption of important functions. it's never been a winning proposition, and this time is no different. the house intelligence committee will get a classified briefing about all those drones on the eastern seaboard. faa, fbi assure americans they are not in

danger. some, they say, are hobby drones. many are airplanes, even stars. incoming president trump joining the debate from mar-a-lago. the government knows what is happening. look, our military knows where they took off from. if it's a garage, they can go right into that garage. they know where it came from and where it went. and for some reason, they don't want to comment. and i think they'd be better off saying what it is our military knows and our our president knows. and for some reason, they want to keep people in suspense. have you received an intelligence briefing on the drones? i don't want to comment on that. now, mr. trump is having it both ways here. either he has been briefed, in which case he knows the very thing he claims the government is not telling us, or he has chosen not to be briefed, even though at this point in the transition, he's entitled to the very same classified briefings that president biden gets. trump says he thinks the government might be hiding something, something
5:51 am
that he's entitled to find out about. meantime, people continue to post all kinds of mysterious lights on social media, like these red blinking lights, which on closer examination, most commentators say are radio tower beacon lights. it's just too dark and foggy to see the radio towers, which is why radio towers have red flashing tower beacons. the former governor of maryland adding to the fray with a video he posted to social media. people are rightfully clamoring for answers but aren't getting any. he wrote, the american people deserve answers. now. this is the video he posted the user generated fact check system on x says based on what they can see, what the former governor was seeing with stars, specifically the belt of the constellation orion, where three stars make a perfect line. adding to the confusion, when you use an iphone or a video camera, marcus and laura's to laura to zoomn on a star. it looks bigger, like an object. that's a limitation of the optics. stars don't get bigger

in a telescope, they just get brighter. interesting. thanks, scott. you bet. well, we are moving you forward this morning as one south bay, one of the south bay's largest nonprofits, tries to make sure that everyone is squared away for the holidays. yesterday in san jose, sacred heart community service launched what it calls distribution week, which continues today. volunteers handed out boxes full of holiday food for about 700 families in need. it includes turkeys, hams, chickens and other holiday food supplies. our mike inouye recently spoke with the charity's senior development director. she says between food handouts and a toy giveaway starting tomorrow, a lot of help and donations are needed right now for holidays. our operation gets even bigger so we see a daily during this food distribution. we have like 500 volunteers coming in today and throughout the rest of the week. love to see it. well, toy donations are still being accepted and food donations are
5:53 am
distributed all year long. to learn more about volunteering, visit sacred heart. c s.org/holidays. season of giving. yeah, it's tough to think about the need, but it's nice to know that there's so many people who are reaching out and there's a big need out there. a big need, certainly. so. okay, maybe for a warm coat as well. a little foggy this morning. it's foggy. it's cold. and we are going to have more days like this now that we're into december. after quite a bit of rainfall, we typically do see that moisture condensing in the air, causing the fog as our temperatures cool down during the overnight hours. and that makes it hard to see with all those water droplets floating through the air. and we're going to see visibility down to a quarter mile in san jose, as well as concord and in san francisco. dense fog advisory in effect through 9:00. so that's most likely when we'll start to see it clearing up for parts of the bay area. right now we're in the upper 40s for concord as well as pleasanton, 48 degrees.
5:54 am
san jose is at 51 and 49, in los altos, san francisco at 49 degrees. and then looking at san rafael, where we are once again taking a look at that drive on 101. for a lot of people, that fog is reducing visibility, but it doesn't make it down to zero. so at least it is good enough for you to drive and keep at a good flow of speed as you're driving on the roadways. but we're going to see the fog here in the north bay continue through about 10:00, and then it starts to lift up a little bit, and then it clears out around noon. but it's going to be a cool morning and gradually making its way toward the low 60s for this afternoon, 62 will be the high in napa and oakland as well as palo alto. and for the south county, that's where we have slightly warmer temperatures headed for the mid 60s for today, and even making it into the upper 60s and low 70s tomorrow, while the east bay will be up to the low 60s tomorrow afternoon, we'll see san francisco's high 62 degrees on thursday. it's also going to
5:55 am
be milder, with more sunshine throughout the day and looking at some dry weather continuing. but then saturday, busy shopping day, busy day to try to wrap up all of the holiday activities and get family in town or you're heading out of town. there will be some rain coming in and we are seeing quite a few storms moving in early next week, as well as sierra snow, so we're going to be watching out for all of that. temperatures will be on the cool side, a bit of a warm up going into the weekend as well as early next week, but then cooling down once those storm systems start to arrive. and we're seeing that in our 7-day forecast, as well as our temperatures will be mild and well above normal for this time of year through friday. and then saturday. it does get cooler as the rain moves in. mike has a look on that emeryville camera. can't really see anything, but that's because kari, as you talked about, the fog is just above so low clouds, just about just above the deck for folks who are driving through the area. but 20 minutes ago this
5:56 am
was crystal clear. and so we are looking at that fog continuing to reach down. look at that. every time we take a look, that yellow kind of pushes aund throughout contra costa county, alameda county now being affected. there may be a crash at powell. we're waiting to see any updates from chp. we are looking at a slower drive, but look for a tuesday. highway 37, highway 4 and the bay bridge are the only spots showing any real slowing that's relatively light for a tuesday. lower those speeds, but there should be lighter traffic flow as some folks are starting to get out of town and think about their vacations. the south bay is experiencing lower visibility. watch that through palo alto all the way down toward the south bay, san jose. we do have that slowing for north 101 even now. starting to ease up from their first burst, though. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, the bird exhibits at the san francisco zoo temporarily closed this morning. the zoo has shut down the african aviary as well as the south american rainforest and aviary. it says that it is all to reduce the risk of human exposure of bird flu. the zoo says it's been taking other security measures
