correspondent keir simmons with the breaking news. keir, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning to you. even the timing is dramatic. yesterday, he was charged with war crimes. today, they say, they have killed him in moscow. russian media reporting a bomb was taped to the handle of a scooter. this morning in moscow, a dramatic explosion, killing a key russian general and his assistant. the blast so powerful it blew the bricks from the walls and the remains of a scooter, it was loaded with explosives, ukraine says. the operation both audacious and precise. the bomb detonating as he moved between a building and a car. and ukraine's most ambitious assassination deep inside russia since the war began. this lieutenant general was chief of the russian army's chemical weapons division. he was sanctioned by the uk in october for the alleged use of chemical weapons in ukraine.

7:11 am
about those drone sightings, saying we have not identified anything anomalous and do not assess the activity to present a national security or public safety risk over the civilian air space in new jersey or other states in the northeast. though the push continues for answers about thousands of sightings. >> we want to make sure our skies are protected. we don't want anyone using drones that will be harmful. >> reporter: nn nnl governor phil murphy is pushing for legislation to give states more authority to deal with drones. >> it is extraordinary to me that a nation as great as ours and as powerful as ours has the deficiencies that we have seen in living color as it relates to drone incursions. >> reporter: the nypd says many of the tips they've investigated are actually planes, helicopters, even planets. president-elect trump suggesting without offering evidence that the government or the military knows more about the drones than they're saying.

7:14 am
unmanned drones and civil aviation aircraft or commercial aircraft. look, we've got 5,000 tips we've gone through. the fbi is still working on 100 leads from those tips and sightings that we still have to triangulate and finish looking at. we'll do that. as we do that, if we learn more, if we learn something different, well, my goodness, we'll come out and talk about it. we are being as open and transparent with the american people as we can be. what we won't do is speculate or hypothesize about something we don't know. we know there is no national security threat, we know there's no public safety threat right now. >> it seems like in a way the white house is saying nothing to see here, essentially nothing nefarious to see here. people are, in fact, seeing something with their own eyes. let me narrow the question. is there an uptick in drone activity in this northeast activity? have you observed that? >> well, there is a lot of drone activity on the northeast corridor. there's no question about that. thousands per day.
7:15 am
as your reporter rightly noted, there is a million registered drones with the faa here in the country. >> more than usual? more than usual? that's what people are seeing. >> i'm not prepared to say there is more than usual. but there is a lot of activity and it has increased over the last several years. the ecosystem of drones has just grown exponentially, therefore their use has grown exponentially. look, in the wintertime, when the sun goes down earlier, you have more hours at night, these things are legal and lawful so they're flieg using their lights so you can see them. if all the video and imagery you can see their lights. their doing the right thing. so it's just possible that people are seeing more of them now. i don't want to down play the fact that there is an awful lot of drone activity over the skies of the united states, and we do need better authorities to deal with that growing ecosystem of drones in u.s. air space. there are gaps and seams between the federal government and the state government. there are gaps and seams. in local authorities, congress needs to help us get through this.
7:16 am
>> john ad.o.d. official at a briefing on saturday said we have -- echoing yoyou, we ha no intelligence or observations that would indicate that these drones were aligned with a foreign actor or had malicious intent. then he goes on to say, but i just got to simply say, we don't know. we have not been able to locate the operators or points of origins. if you don't know the operators or points of origin, how do you know that it's not? >> part of that comes in the analysis in the detection of the track, the behavior of the aircraft, what they're doing, how long they're there. you can tell a lot about intent how an aircraft operates or how it is operated. again, we still got 100 leads we're working on. we're still working through this. as we learn more information, we absolutely will come forward and let people know. but it is important for them to know now two things. there is a lot of drones in the sky. there's a lot of aircraft in the sky over u.s. air space. and there's no indication that any of it, particular on the
7:17 am
northeast sea board, poses a national security threat or public safety threat. as a matter of fact, these drones are in large part doing public good. they are either helping commercial deliveries or they're law enforcement drones. some are hobbyists, but there is no harm to public safety from this. >> one other thing. some local officials say the drones seem to fly in a coordinated pattern, only at night and for an extended period of time. is that your assessment, too? and how do you explain that? >> i suspect some of them are flying in coordinated ways. that's what you want. you want unmanned aircraft in air space flying legally to fly coordinated flight paths and in an organized fashion. that doesn't mean there is a nefarious intent. it can sound that way, but that doesn't mean maliciousness or criminal activity of any kind. it could mean, in fact, what we think it means, which is that they are flying legally and lawfully for, you know, for legitimate purposes. >> and finally, i mean, the president-elect essentially said the white house administration is keeping us in suspense and we don't know. bottom line, is the
