twister. just as a city takes account ofhe financial toll. plus, another foggy start to our morning commute. meteorologist kari hall is tracking where we're going to see these dangerous conditions. this is today in the bay. slow it down, slow it down. that's the word for this morning. well, i guess the phrase this morning. good morning to you. on this wednesday, i'm marcus washington and i'm ginger conejero saab. laura garcia is off this morning. slow it down. that's going to be advice mike's going to give you to take my line. we're going to take a look at traffic in just a minute. but first we're going to start out with kari. yeah. you're slowing it down because it's hard to see out there as you're driving. visibility has been very low. and the worst of it is in areas where we aren't always seeing this kind of condition. to start out the day with some dense fog in the south bay, but all of these areas shaded in light blue are included in the dense fog advisory, where visibility and where at times may drop down to about a quarter mile or less

between now and 9 a.m. and looking at some of the numbers here from our airport readings, it's at a half of a mile for san jose, but only a 10th of a mile for oakland and a quarter of a mile in concord. take a look at our live camera in san jose. this is your view. even though we are higher up and in santa clara, we're going to see that fog up until about 8:00 and a mix of sun and clouds and warming temperatures into today. mike, it's a clear view now in san rafael. yeah, and we're seeing lighter traffic around the bay, which starts now and ends through the extends through the rest of the year. we typically talk fog in the north bay, but right now san rafael and the rest of the north bay patches are looking pretty good. the fog is over in the east bay and issue your references may be obscured because of the low clouds, even though you can see the roadway, which is great. you can see the backup at the toll plaza. so do lower those speeds, because friends i've been talking to over at the station, even as they approach the station, we kind of got a little disoriented. we knew where the exits were as far as where those

appropriations done. but our aim is to do it early in the year. among other things, the bill includes $100 billion for disaster relief funding for damage caused by hurricanes helene and milton. there's also $10 billion in aid for farmers, something many republicans support. but the overall size and scope of the measure is drawing pushback from some members of the gop. it's a total dumpster fire. i think it's garbage. this is what washington, d.c. has done. this is why i ran for congress. try to stop this. top senate republicans blame democrats for the last minute push. we're dealing with this mess because the democrathere in the senate failed to take up what i think are the most basic responsibilities of our government, and that's to fund the military and obviously to spend wisely the taxpayer dollars. democrats say getting the measure through congress before funding expires is a top priority. we're getting closer to the december 20th deadline. so time is of the essence for republicans to reach an agreement with us that we can

act on quickly. we are heading into the holidays, and the nation really needs a bipartisan package that will prevent a needless shutdown. the bill also addresses rising concerns about recent drone sightings that have shut down u.s. airspace. one provision in this funding bill would reauthorize a program allowing federal agencies to coordinate and counter threats from drones. back to you. all right. all things. we will certainly be watching closely. brie jackson in washington this morning. thank you. brie. all right. 604 for you now, the man who murdered cashapp founder, bob lee in san francisco will not learn his exact fate until next month at the earliest. that is when nima momeni will be back in court for a hearing to set his sentencing. the judge yesterday scheduled a january 10th court date after jurors yesterday convicted momeni of second degree murder. momeni faces 16 years to life in

because of not very nice customers. okay, as far as interest rates, we expect the rate the fed will cut rates by a quarter point at the conclusion of its meeting today around 11 a.m. our time the third such cut in a row. cutting interest rates, increases the amount of money in the economy by making money easier to borrow. that increases economic activity. and that's all good news. the cuts today, if they come, are a sign the fed thinks inflation is largely beaten. we'll talk more about what those mean for your family at the bottom of the hour. well you may have one of these in your house a tp-link wi-fi router. the company has about 60% market share. wall street journal says federal regulators might ban the sale of tp routers because they're worried t company ships those routers with too many security flaws. flaws. the spy agency could take advantage of tp-link, based in california, but chinese owned says it looks forward to working with regulators. samsung

6:20 am
temperature cools down to the dew point, which we see each and every morning. and so that's the reason for the fog that we are seeing. take a look at this live view in oakland. s so it's very patchy. in fact you can kind of see it from this camera here looking down onto the roadway where in some spots it's hard to see. and then other areas it's completely clear. and it just kind of moves around and drifts. and so our temperatures are starting out cool as we've made it down to that dew point. but then throughout the day, as temperatures warm up and we get a mix of sun and clouds, it's going to shape up to be a nice day. we're dry for a while, but then our next storm system comes in saturday into sunday. and if you have travel plans the week of christmas, heads up that it is going to be very difficult because we have one storm after the next coming in and a lot of sierra snow as well. so if you're going north or south, there is going to be some rain moving through for the sierra. if you're traveling east, going 2 or 3 this year, there could be
6:21 am
a foot to possibly a foot and a half, maybe even two feet of snow, as we're already at the normal amount of sierra snow pack, or even double the normal amount for the northern sierra. there will be some more on the way while the bay area gets some rain. look at christmas eve. it's going to be raining as santa visits the bay area and highs in the upper 50s. we'll be watching all of those changes. but now, mike, you're seeing it in the south bay with that low visibility. yeah. santa has the assistance of rudolph with a bright red nose. over here. you can see the orange lighting throughout along the freeway. you can see that well lit sign, but other signs, maybe the exit signs are being unfamiliar, as those low clouds do drift around many parts of the south bay. traffic volume relatively light, as we would expect for the morning commute during these last few weeks of the year, we do see a little slowing for north 101 denser fog coming through santa clara. watch that watch. cupertino, sunnyvale, mountain view, santa clara saw a lot of fog this morning, just now developing for the east bay drive south on the nimitz, out

of oakland and down toward fremont, and more fog through contra costa county, but lighter traffic volume. back to you. all right. thanks a lot, mike. 621 for you this morning. we have much more news ahead for you here on today in the bay, including our response team stepping in to help a person impacted by a faulty appliance plus. hey, there it is. day ten of the 12 days of christmas snack mix edition, and i give you the classic spinach dip that everybody loves at a party. i've never actually made it, so i took the recipe right off the box and it was so easy to put together. kris i can just stop by and grab some from you too. all right, that's another recipe for you to try this holiday season. check out this one and many more right now on chris's instagram page. you can follow her at kris nbc. there's much more news ahead. you're

foggy start this morning, especially for you commuters out there. i want you to check out these conditions. this is just a short time ago in sunnyvale. a photographer there shot this about an hour ago. this is near lawrence expressway and east wayne avenue. meteorologist kari hall here. i know, and kari, i know we've been talking about it all morning. i can't even see much of what's behind you right now. yes. so that's been the view of a lot of our cameras heading out the door. the fog resting right above the surface here. and in some spots it has settled down to street level, where it makes it hard to drive and get around. take a look at the low clouds and fog we're seeing over san francisco. at least if you're in one of the high rise buildings you can see very clearly. but here at the ground level, it is a really difficult, and we've seen it drop down to about a quarter mile or less. we're down to a 10th of a mile in oakland at the airport. and santa rosa starts out cloudy with fog. it will be with us until about 7 to 8:00 there. and then temperatures going from upper 30s to mid 40s

at 9:00, upper 50s at noon, and eventually making it up to 66 degrees there. it will be mild in some areas as we get some afternoon sunshine. we're watching that as well as more changes ahead in the microclimate forecast coming up. mike, you're seeing the backup in emeryvie. we can see the backup now. those clouds have cleared up a little bit. our rooftop camera looking down to the berkeley curve through emeryville. you see the backup and the backups? no surprise. the visibility starting to shift as those low clouds shift. and that may be a bigger factor than the amount of traffic. we do see a lighter volume, as we expect through the end of the year. right now for the early morning commute. there's the east bay. a little slowing clearing up through richmond later, crew cleared around el portal. south bay pockets, but nothing major. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. let's take another live look over at the bay bridge this morning and across the bay area, so we know the cost to cross those bridges. the toll there is scheduled to increase next year. drivers may just want to get used to that idea. a vote later this morning will greenlight a series of yearly hikes today in
6:33 am
the bay's bob redell. joining us live over at the dunbarton bridge there. okay, look, bob, a lot of folks who crossed the bridge daily, they're like, okay, how much more can it go up? well, we already know it's going to go up at the dumbarton and the six other state owned bridges here in the bay area. marcus, on january 1st, we'll be going from $7 to $8. that's already set in stone. later this morning. we could learn whether or not the hikes, the tolls will go up another $0.50 starting next year. we'll learn that in a few hours from now. later this morning, the bay area toll authority, they're going to meet in s.f. to consider a series of 50 cent toll hikes that would start january 1st of 2026 and go on for five years of each year for all seven state owned bridges. we're talking about the antioch, the bay bridge, benicia, martinez carquinas, dumbarton, where i'm at the richmond-san rafael and the san mateo-hayward bridge. this would not include the golden gate, which is under its own authority. so if approved, tolls would go up from $8.50 in 2026
6:34 am
to eventually $10.50 in 2030. this is for people using fastrak. you can see that on your screen, license plate or invoice. tolling would be slightly more. this is for the maintenance and rehabilitation of the bridges. and what this will do is allow us to meet our statutory obligations to keep the bridges in a state of good repair without having to borrow money to do so. that was john goodwin with the bay area toll authority and the metropolitan transportation commission. he points out that the west span of the bay bridge is 88 years old. the newer e span is just over ten years old, and all the other state owned bridges in our area are somewhere in between. so in other words, these bridges are getting older and they need more maintenance and that costs more money. he says the toll hikes are actually cheaper than the interest they'd be paying on borrowed money to pay for these repairs. the toll authority is also considering this morning a
6:35 am
proposal to allow three person hov discounts at all bridges. that's already in effect at the bay bridge. and right now at the dumbarton in san mateo, there's a two person discount. so they're now talking about a three person discount at all bridges. the proposal also calls for allowing two person carpool vehicles to use the carpool lanes on the approaches to the antioch, benicia-martinez, carquinez, dumbarton, richmond, san rafael and san mateo-hayward bridges. so reminder voters approved a toll hike via a regional measure three that was in 2018. so that means on january 1st and a couple of weeks, the tolls are already set to go up from $7 to $8 at the dumbarton, at the other bridges here in the bay area. just a reminder, reporting live here in newark at the dumbarton bridge toll plaza. bob redell. today in the bay. a reminder we need it. but one you could have kept. all right. thanks, bob. all right, well, still kind of on that bottom line, the federal reserve begins its final policy meeting of the year. with the interest rate decision due later this

morning. and despite high inflation, the fed is expected to cut interest rates this week for a third straight meeting. of course, our scott mcgrew joins us here. scott, a lot of people are wondering here, what does this mean for me? yeah, of course. i mean, we want to know what these decisions made in washington and elsewhere mean for, you know, our paychecks, how much money we have in the bank, what we can buy, that sort of thing. the simple answer, ginger, is less than you might think. i mean, we'll talk about credit cards and mortgage rates, although the fed doesn't set either one of those. but they're related. but more importantly, i'd really rather you pivot to a broader picture. the fed cuts rates when it thinks inflation is under control or close to under control. a little hotter than we would like in the last reading. butre a sign that some of the smartest economists in the world are happy with the economy. as far as the personal pocketbook goes, things do get easier on you. even though the fed again, does not set credit card rates or car loan rates. but by lowering interest rates, banks cut their
6:37 am
expenses, whi theoretically they're going to pass on to you in the form of lower rates. the fed doesn't do mortgage rates either. that's largely attached to a bond, a yield on a government bond. but again, sometimes that leads to lower rates. i know a ■lot of people are watching mortgage rates also here in the bay area. but you mentioned thohose credi card rates. what about that? okay. credit card rates i mean the rates are outrageous. you're paying 17%, 20%, 22%, a quarter point of 1%. change is not going to affect your life. your own credit rating is a much better way of affecting, and you can control that. the fed doesn't control that. if you have a 100 point difference, you're 100 points higher on me than i am on a credit card credit rating. you will pay far less for a loan. so i was saying earlier that the when you're thinking about it as a diet, your your credit rating is the double big mac with extra bacon and a large fry. and the fed cut is the diet coke. i
6:38 am
mean, it makes a difference. but really, we got to talk about this thing over here. it might make a difference. exactly. it might make a difference of how much more of that double big mac you're going to eat if you're too fat. that's one way of looking at it. yeah. all right, well, skip on those big calories. focus on your own credit rating. yes, that's the big lesson there. thanks a lot, scott. you bet. i like that burger analogy. it clicked just like that when you did. i know right. you get it. thanks, scott and ginger. 637 for you right now. new developments coming out of oakland. this is where leaders are taking the drastic steps to commit to painful cuts. this to help offset a massive budget deficit. motion passes with a vote of five ayes. late last night, council members approved that plan. it includes major cuts to the policice and fire departments. the city is now facing a $129 million shortfall. now the cuts will roll out in two phases. phase one takes effect in a matter of days. it will impact city staff and police overtime spending, along with postponing police

6:40 am
not seeing a huge storm that could impact the travel. but this is a look at the visibility right now in san jose. and this is what we've been talking about usually. we're looking at sfo for that potential of the fog causing those flight delays. we're now seeing the fog settling into the south bay where it's 49 degrees. it will clear out quickly and throughout the day. sunshine as our temperatures head for the mid 60s. it will be a little bit cooler in the east bay where that fog holds on a lot longer, making it into thepper 50s and low 60s. but mike, the south bay commuters should probably slow down a little bit. yeah, a little bit, because right now our camera in san jose shows the lighter traffic as we head toward the end of the year. we'll see that for the early commute, but also the fog. even though you can see the lines in the roadway, the context may b unfamiliar. so do note that folks may have to slow down a bit as you travel through the south bay. still registering with light traffic and patchy fog throughout the south bay portions into the city. now san francisco does see some fog, so watch for that. an easy drive

may have to figure out a solution to avoid a government shutdown this weekend. scott mcgrew. it's a bill stuffed with full of ideas, crammed all of those things like a stocking. yeah, like a stocking. theoretically, the bill to keep the government open could have been written on a cocktail napkin. keep funding of government agencies the same, and you're done. that's the continuing resolution, more or less. that's been running the government for quite some time now. but the bill introduced

that's being passed around in the house right now is so much bigger. not only did they add the badly needed storm aid to the bill and relief for farmers to the bill, but dozens of other ideas and projects and spending. and it's got a lot of members of congress, particularly republicans, upset they're due to go home for the holidays and their speaker is handing them a phonebook sized bill, a continuing resolution that they have to read through. and these are the very same lawmakers who say we should be spending less. now they're dealing with a cr that says we should spend more. so sign it and spend more, or the government shuts down saturday. that's the pickle that they are in. president elect donald trump suing the des moines register newspaper for a poll it conducted right before the election, showing kamala harris ahead in iowa. trump ultimately won iowa. the poll was wrong. many polls are wrong. but the trump trump has attacked this newspaper for what he says is election interference. now, trump often sues or threatens to
