as we've seen all week. highway 37 your typical build out of vallejo. and as we're looking over here toward the bay bridge, we have just the early start for the backup visible at the toll plaza, indicating the metering lights and the slowing incline. a typical trend right now as we're looking at 5.40. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, instead of filling the holiday cheer, many are now stressing over the spending ahead for you. this morning on today in the bay, we're going to talk about the growing affordability fears ahead of christmas and tips to help alleviate your crunch. and in washington this morning, a deal to keep the government open past saturday has been busted. let's first check in with investigative reporter candice nguyen, a nurse in contra costa county blows the whistle about a major health care system ignoring medical needs for medi-cal patients. her complaint and our reports sparked a criminal investigation and now action by the county. why? that story right now on
5:42 am
- i had health insurance before. (discouraged) so expensive. i mean, i'm helping my mom out, i don't have that kinda cash. - ugh, i know. but you can get financial help now through covered lifornia. it's totally affordable. you'd be surprised. they've got this calculator thing that shows how much you'll pay. - for real? - yeah! what are you doing not having health insurance, man? - hey, i know, i know... - here, let me show you... - we all have questions. covered california has answers and can find a health plan that's right for you. covered california. this way to health insurance.
5:44 am
43, and we're checking out brentwood and what to expect. today, the fog hanging around throughout at least noon and our temperatures staying cool. even at noontime. it's going to be 48 degrees and only making it into the low 50s today. once we get some peeks of sunshine. cool here, but in the 70s in other parts of the bay area, we'll talk about our microclimates coming up and the fog is affecting the benicia bridge right now, and most heavily, the
5:45 am
bay bridge. it's the volume that's starting to build. i forgot to mention this, though. in the city itself, the t-third line is replaced by bus today between sunnydale and third marin stations there, and that will cause some delays or at least alterations to your schedule from 7 a.m. until just after noon. keep that in mind. the t third line is impacted between sunnydale and marin. a deal between republicans and democrats to keep the government open has gone bust and scott mcgrew telling us just yesterday about that. the deal bloated with special interest. so that really seems to have wreaked really wreck the deal i think. yeah, absolutely. i mean, we were seeing we were saying yesterday rather a continuing resolution to keep the government open is as simple as a few words that might fit on a cocktail napkin, but instead, the deal we're talking about was full of spending, good spending, perhaps hurricane relief help for farmers, but spending seemed to be the only deal that republican speaker of the house
5:46 am
mike johnson could push through. he needs some democratic votes in most cases, because he can't depend on all republicans to say yes. but elon musk started tweeting about this, and then trump reacted and told republicans to vote no. musk, any member of the house or senate who votes for this outrageous spending bill deserves to be voted out in two years. he then reposted a picture of himself with a sword, ready to chop the continuing resolution bill in half. then trump, on his own social network, said the republicans should only vote for a clean cr. that is a simple kick the can down the road bill that keeps the government funded past this weekend. it's not clear, though, that johnson can get a clean cr passed. it's not clear johnson is going to keep his job at this point, but he's stuck in the middle. here's his counterpart in the house minority leader, democrat hakeem jeffries. house republicans have now unilaterally decided to break a
5:47 am
bipartisan agreement that they made. house republicans have been ordered to shut down the government and hurt everyday americans all across this country. other news the federal aviation administration early this morning ordered the grounding of all drones in certain parts of new jersey. this comes, of course, after a rash of reports of strange lights in the sky. authorities say there's no unusual flight activity. people are seeing airplanes, tower beacon lights, even in some cases mistaking stars for strange lights. these social media panics tend to come in waves. back in 2016, you may have forgotten america was gripped by the sightings of creepy clowns. it got so prevalent, someone in the press corps asked the white house about it. did the president have any thoughts on creepy clowns? i
5:48 am
don't i don't know that the president has been briefed on this particular situation. this is something that i've i've read about in some of the news coverage. obviously, this is a situation that local law enforcement authorities take quite seriously, and they should carefully and thoroughly review, you know, perceived threats to the safety of the community. kris sharks are another one that, you know, takes a trend. usually in the summer, media starts noticing people posting about sharks. they consult with experts who say there are no more than usual. that becomes an article. experts deny there's a surge in shark attacks, and somehow we have a shark summer out of that. and then a movie after that. thanks, scott. well, happening today, santa clara county is showing its support for immigrants today. community members and advocates will hold a press conference to help immigrants know their rights. there will be speakers, a resource table, and banners from participating organizations so
5:49 am
they know how to connect. that press conference will be on the front lawn of gilroy city hall. that's at 1130 this morning. well, with less than a week to go until christmas, a new study indicates that many americans are stressed about spending all of the money associated with the holidays. that no doubt includes those trying to make it in the bay. i want you to take a look at these new numbers. this is from the intuit credit karma. 44% of americans say that they feel pressure to spend more money than they can afford. one third say that they are heading into the holiday season with more than $5,000 in debt. 21% say they don't care about making good financial decisions during this time of the year. a consumer financial advocate with credit karma says one thing that can save you money is deleting the credit card information saved on your phone. it has never been easier to click a button or touch your, you know, a button on your phone, and all of a sudden you've bought something that you didn't know existed 30s ago, right? it's
5:50 am
just so easy. and so if you're finding yourself really trying to or really, you know, falling into that trap of, of instant spending, try to unsave all your credit card numbers, unlink your wallet from your phone, do anything that makes you actually take a beat or pause. now here's another tip she has. i've used this one and it does work. she says, wait a day or two to make sure you really want that item you're looking for online. sometimes i forget about it. yeah, that's true right? all the mariachi from abraham lincoln high school in san jose has been a student's pride for decades. now they need a little help from the community to achieve one of their biggest goals, which is buying their charro suits. the ones you know, they're so fancy. the group is made up of 73 students of different grades and skill levels, and many of the students say the music is a connection to their roots that they have inherited from their parents and their grandparents, and it's what make ranchero
5:51 am
music also exciting for them as new generations. the group has a go fan account where gofund me write go fan. i'm not sure, so the community can make donations to help the band purchase those symbolic outfits that will make them feel 100% legit. so we will. i'll post that link because i don't think i said it correctly. they sound good. well, we are six days away from christmas, and if you've ever wondered what celebrating christmas might be like inside one of san francisco's iconic victorian homes, yeah, that's the case. don't don't worry about it. we've got you covered. we have an inside look at one of those homes. and here with us this morning is robert pritchard. he is the home owner and steward of the brune reitlinger house. this is near alamo park. good morning to you. good morning. good morning everyone. welcome to the brune reutlinger. so let's talk about it. i love the way it looks inside. i really want to take the tour myself. so give us a
5:52 am
little bit of information about this house. the house was constructed in 1886. heinrich galeforce is the architect. it was built by henry brune. henry brune was part of neighbor alfred brune. the phoenix whiskey bourbon company located on market street. so they actually did have a lot of public soirees here. and they built a ballroom downstairs to have those here. you know, it's always daunting when you have people over into your home and you have opened it not just to your friends and family, but to the public. why did you decide to do that? well,e should start with the name of the house. it's the brune reutlinger. the builder is henry brune. the restorer of the house is richard reutlinger. richard lovingly restored this house for 54 years until his passing in 2019. richard bought the house in 1965. it was not anything like what you see today. richard's quote the house had
5:53 am
good bones, but it needed a lot of help. a third of the ceiling had come down from a leak in the main bathroom. there were holes in the walls. a couple of the windows were broken, so richard just worked room by room by room. and i like the picture of you right there as well, where you are, that picture of you as well. and those decorations look great, richard. oh, that was richard. oh, but you're dressed like richard. no, that picture is richard. oh, yeah. oh, well, yeah, red is the color of this house. yeah. took me for a loop. i'm just saying. all right, well, thank you, sir, for opening up your doors to your home. it's beautiful. and we hope that people are respectful as they come through. and take a look at what san francisco looked like back then. yeah. and we'll see you next hour and talk more about those decorations inside. take care. okay. great. okay. all right. stick around. thank you, thank you. this time of year, it's always nice to have an indoor option just in case. right? and as you're
5:54 am
driving through san francisco, you're looking at the buildings like i wonder what it looks like inside. so that's really cool. all right. so we are getting into our weekend where you will want to find some indoor things to do, mainly on saturday because we're going to see some rain coming in this morning. it's the fog. so that makes it hard and a very tough commute for a lot of drivers in the delta and in parts of the north bay, at least for much of the rest of the bay area. the fog has not been so bad. we've seen visibility in concord dropping down to a quarter of a mile, and be mindful that these sensors are at airports, so we know that we're driving in between and dealing with conditions in between those airport sites. so you may be clear. and then suddenly you hit a wall of fog. and just be mindful of that and allow some extra time to get to work. this morning in oakland. it's clear for now, and our temperatures are in the upper 40s, and it's going to be in the 40s through 9:00. after that, the sunshine helps it warm up gradually as our high temperatures here head. for the
5:55 am
mid 60s. it will be 66 in santa rosa today, 62 in san francisco, and some spots may be just a bit warmer compared to yesterday. south county highs in the low 70s tomorrow. it's about the same where a lot of the east bay will stay cool. upper 50s, low 60s and even cooler on sunday as rain arrives. and here's a look at that srm system. now it's over the pacific northwest and timing it out. by the time it gets to the bay area, a lot of it will be weakening. we're not expecting this to have a big impact, but just bringing waves of rain as one storm system after the next moves into our area next week. but it looks like at least on christmas day, there will be a break in time for the kids to get out and enjoy their new toys outside, and temperatures as well will be cool. while we get all of this rain throughout the weekend into next week, possibly up to three inches of rainfall for parts of the north bay, but not so much for san jose. in morgan hill, the first day of winter comes on
5:56 am
saturday, and we'll only make it into the upper 50s next week. some times of rain and even on christmas eve it could be a bit soggy. and mike, you're seeing a gradual build up in oakland. yeah, because this time of year, toward now, through the end of the year, we have a lighter early commute. we've just now seen about mid parking lots. the last five minutes has seen a lot more traffic at the bay bridge, but it's a gradual build throughout the east bay. light slowing here now coming off of highway 37 and vallejo. highway four did show an early build, but it's gradual there as well through concord out of pittsburgh and bay point, walnut creek just fine. the visibility may be an issue. there's the most fog here influencing highway four and coming down through pleasant hill. no major problems listed, but we do have slowing north 680 past bernal. i believe those crews that were at the onramps overnight may be clearing back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, happening now, the chance to ask peninsula leaders about the response to the tsunami warning issued two weeks ago. members of san mateo county's emergency management
5:57 am
department are leading a town hall meeting tonight in half moon bay. that warning was triggered after the 7.0 earthquake off the coast of humboldt county today. the meeting tonight. that meeting will focus on ways to increase preparedness for future incidents. it's going to start at 6 p.m. over at the maverick house on broadway. we are following several breaking news stories this morning, starting with the man who is accused of killing unitedhealthcare ceo, who is facing a judge this morning. ahead at six, we're breaking down the new developments that are playing out in court. and amazon workers on strike from coast to coast. and the impact this could have on your holiday shipments. we'll be right back.
