suspended in the bill is not passed. right now at five, a shutdown showdown. we are less than 24 hours away from a government shutdown after lawmakers failed to pass a gop backed bill. the challenges facing washington as the clock ticks down to the looming deadline. plus, the bird flu now has spread beyond birds. the steps california is taking to curb that infection. and demanding answers from police. the cononcerns people in oakland are voicing after a violent attack leads to the death of a restaurant owner. this is today in the bay. and good morning to you on this friday. thanks for starting your friday with us. i'm marcus washington. we can't say it enough. it's friday. i'm kris sanchez. i'm in for laura garcia. nice to see that. there's not so much fog on the roadways for mike and kari. good news for you, too. yes, absolutely. but we've also seen it in patches. it's not as
5:02 am
widespread and dense as yesterday morning, but we're still keeping an eye on it as things can change minute by minute. and we know that fog kind of moves around as we start out our morning. it's going to be very chilly once again. we're down to 41. in palo alto. it is 47 in walnut creek, and we're in the mid 40s for san francisco as well as san jose. but we are going to see more of the same temperatures that we had yesterday in the mid to upper 50s for the east bay, but we could be in the upper 60s for the south bay into the south county. we'll talk about the return of rain and tomorrow's forecast. mike, you're tracking a couple of things already out there. yeah. so on the chp report, we have this report and i see a little slowing westbound 37 right around lakeville highway. reports of a crash, no major injuries, but that's unusual for your drive i in tard novato, over in the east bay and the north bay. a smooth drive coming downn acrossenicia, carquinez bridges, east bay, tri-valley. we're looking at north 680. not a full closure.
5:03 am
there's 1 or 2 lanes. they have paving work going on still, and they have to wait for that to cure. so that will open in the next hour or so. we don't have an exact time. they're watching the clearing on the roadway. the south bay and peninsula all clear right now. although 17. i saw a little slowing. looks like it cleared. i'll check out what's going on as you head through los gatos. back to you. thank you. mike. developing now on capitol hill. a gop backed bill to avert a government shutdown failed in the house. and with less than 24 hours until government funding runs out and no closer to a deal, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are pointing fingers. today in the bay brie jackson live for us in washington this morning, and brie lawmakers are back at the negotiating table this morning with little time to spare. that's right. good morning, marcus is. and there's little time to do this finger pointing that we've seen lawmakers doing. they need to act fast. after president elect donald trump blew up an earlier bipartisan agreement. house democrats and some conservatives rejected a new measure that mr. trump had praised. house
5:04 am
minority leader hakeem jeffries called that measure, quote, laughable. the chaos continues on capitol hill. on this vote. the yeas a are 174, the nays are 235. one voting present, two thirds not being in the affirmative. the rules are not suspended and the bill is not passed. the house, rejecting a plan backed by president elect donald trump to keep the federal government up and running through march 14th. the slimmed down measure included millions in disaster relief, money and aid for farmers while cutting out pay raises for lawmakers. but it was ridiculous also to put on the floor a bill to raise the debt limit to an unlimited amount for two years, and it should have failed. i'm glad that it failed. democrats denounced the influence of elon musk, who president elect trump picked to cut government spending. the billionaire slammed the original bipartisan spending bill as a steal of your
5:05 am
tax dollars before elon musk uprooted the agreement. an agreement was reached in good faith between democrats and republicans. and that's what we should be voting on. we're the legislative branch of government. mr. musk is not the legislature. as talks continue, some conservatives are demanding more cuts. i want appropriators and leadership who are always the ones who are obstacles to actually cutting spending, to pony up and explain why they won't agree to the spending cuts that we said we should put in place. we're elected to pass a budget. that is what we're constitutionally mandated. the one thing we're actually in the dadgum constitution is a budget, and we abdicate that duty. every congress must act soon or a shutdown will go into effect this weekend. and if a shutdown does happen, the federal government would be unable to pay its millions of employees, including service members and hundreds of thousands of government workers could be furloughed just before the

holidays. marcus. yeah, we're all hoping that they come up with an agreement and a plan that suits everyone very soon. and, brie, before you go, we understand today is your last day with us. and from all of us here today in the bay, you have been a joy from the first day. and thank you for just being so professional, so accurate, and just thank you. well, it's been a pleasure working with you, marcus kris laura, the team there in the control room, everyone's been great. and, you know, the one thing about the morning crew is that having the energy and excitement that everyone brings on in the morning really helps. and so i'm grateful for the opportunity to inform viewers and to work with true professionals like you all. can i add one more thing, please? thank your dad for always being so supportive as well. we love him. also brie thank you. the hair is hair too, i like it. there you go. yes, yes. best wishes. brie. well, in

just a matter of hours, we expect to get a better sense of the steps that the state is going to take to protect us all from the bird flu. today in the bay's bob redell joins us live from the east bay. and, bob, you know, we've heard so much talk about it. how concerned should we be as like average people? good morning to you, chris. the california department of public health says the risk to people is low. there are less than 70 cases of bird flu and people nationwide, about half of them here in california. and most of them are mild cases. there's only been one report of a hospitalization that was a severe case and that was in louisiana. and so far there's no reports of person to person spread of bird flu in our state. almost all infections have been from exposure to infected cattle. so why the concern? well, experts say flu viruses are constantly mutating. it's possible the bird flu could eventually become more dangerous as a result. it's not there yet,
5:08 am
but that is why there are two separate press conferences later this morning, both at 11 a.m. the college of american pathologists. they'll show us how pathologists and clical laboratories are diagnosing and managing the bird flu. and then there will be also another press conference with the california department of public health and the california department of food and agriculture, which will talk about how the state is protecting us and our livestock against this illness. the state does expect more cases among humans who've been exposed to cattle. the virus has been detected in 650 dairy herds in our state. that's why governor newsom declared a state of emergency earlier this week to give state and local agencies more power and resources to manage this virus. we're talking about half a million cows that have been under quarantine and farmers who haven't been infected, their herds haven't been infected, are obsessed right now with trying to make sure that the virus doesn't come to their herd. the fda says eggs

and beef remain safe to eat when cooked properly. and while raw milk does present a risk. pasteurized milk products are as safe as they've ever been. reporting live. bob redell today in the bay. all right. knowledge is power. thank you very much, bob. well, two retired dentists from upscale bay area neighborhoods are now in trouble with the law. each is accused of shoplifting from a sports apparel store near tahoe three separate times this year. the deputies say they released these security images showing the suspects. both of them 68 year old women. one lives in san francisco, the other in hillsborough. the pair, accused of shoplifting $1,500 worth of gear. now, earlier this month, placer county deputies recognized their suv on highway 89 and pulled them over. the identifying factors that did help the deputy identify them is the silver lexus that they were driving, had a handicap license

plate, so that was a little bit more unique. and then, you know, having the two women also in the vehicle together at the same time was also helpful in identifying them. investigators are now looking into the possibility they may have targeted other stores as well. each was released after being booked on grand theft charges in auburn. well, people in oakland's little saigon neighborhood are demanding answers and more of a police presence after the death of a restaurant owner triggered during a violent confrontation. surveillance video from a nearby gas station sunday shows the victim and a coworker chasing down a man. other residents say is a known unhoused person. now, police say it all started when the victim confronted the suspect, vandalizing vehicles outside his restaurant. best dim sum on seventh avenue and east 12th street. police sayt some point, the suspect struck the coworker with some sort of blunt
5:11 am
object. friends of the restaurant owner believe it had an unintended ripple effect caused him to have a heart attack. so the owner's husband and the coworker were both hospitalized. you know, and then just yesterday, he passed away. the tragedy is highlighting what some are calling the out of control crime that the city is not addressing. and it comes after city leaders recently signed off on plans to reduce police staffing levels to offset a massive budget deficit. the restaurant, meanwhile, has not yet reopened. now to a follow up, state regulators have approved pg&e. s latest proposed rate hike. the power company telling the mercury news monthly household rates will go up by an average of more than $3 per month. this follows four previous rate hikes this year alone, and it comes in the wake of the approval this week of a $15 billion federal loan. the utility says it needs more revenue to connect thousands of new customers to the upgrade of

the power grid and upgrade the power grid. and the hike will not appear on customer's bills until 2026. all right. let's take a live look outside at san francisco. and there is a spare the air alert issued for parts of the bay area today. kari. that means even if it's cold, we probably shouldn't light up the fireplace, right? no burning wood today. and if you can also catch public transit and reduce your carbon emissions, that just adds to the unhealthy air quality. the north bay will see the worst of it, and the measure of air quality is above what is healthy for most people. it's also going to be moderate elsewhere, as the a little bit of the pollution, the smoke and settles into the valleys and at times it mixes in with the low clouds and fog. that's what we're seeing over san jose. it will be mostly cloudy throughout the morning into the early afternoon and temperatures staying cool. we're back in the low 60s for san jose today. mike okay, can we get a break in the gas prices today? i feel badly on the heels of your warning
5:13 am
about the spare the air. we're talking gas prices, but some folks load up the car. many people going in one car to get a getaway. so we'll talk about the gas up in livermore for a third week in a row. we send you to the low price leader of marathon. there's two on homes and on south livermore. both are steady at 329. third week in a row. those are the price leaders heading through the north bay. we have a threeee. 44 at vacavie sam's club on helen power drive. and then in the south bay we have sunnyvale's best of great gas. that's 365 there. shop on north matilda avenue. check the gasbuddy.com before you fuel up. if you're going somewhere different, then check that area. as we look at the roadways, a smooth flow of traffic, green sensors, they lit back up for north 680. i believe that paving project is clear now. no problems. pretty clear coming out of the altamont pass. but the upper right corner. you see that yellow highlighting? there is some fog north of tracy heading over east of discovery bay. but look at these travel times. they're great right now out of contra costa county. back to you. we like seeing that green. thank you. 513 right now

clouds today in san jose and becoming mostly cloudy. here's a look in dublin where we have no dense fog right now, and we are going to see a mix of sun and clouds here as well, and a gradual warm up into the afternoon. rain is back tomorrow. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. and right now the live look at the berkeley curve shows you a nice lighter volume of traffic. and that will be the case for the early commute. things will kick in, of course, midday and into the afternoons and evenings. lots of business for folks to do around town. as we approach the end of the year. but let's check in with the business for today. good morning savannah. hey mike, good morning to you. wall street is set to open lower following a mixed session yesterday. and as a vote in the house to avoid a government shutdown this weekend failed. now the dow eking out a small gain to close higher. snapping a ten day losing streak, which was the longest in 50 years. the s&p 500 and the nasdaq giving up early gains to finish in the red. in focus today we get the latest read on inflation with the monthly pce

trolley. this is the car that goes through downtown san jose. it was actually built in italy in 1928 and donated it to california in 1986. the trolley is expected to make an appearance on the weekends before and after christmas, beginning tomorrow, with weather permitting, of course. it will run between the civic center and diridon station free of charge. it's free. free of charge? yes, that's the best part about it. you know i love free. it's taken a while to get here because they had to keep building the track from italy. over. got a little murky over the water. it rained. they couldn't build anything. picking up the old track. put it in front of the. oh my goodness. well, weather permitting, so will the weather permit. ooh! oh, no. i know it's a little iffy right now. we are going to see some scattered showers, and it will be hard to tell exactly where it's going to be raining in the bay area tomorrow. but i do think the north bay will have the best chance. that's where we are seeing some lighter, patchy fog this morning as we take a
5:21 am
are heading out, it is now 48ou degrees and it will be a cool morning. in fact, we'll stay in the 40s through about 10:00 and then slowly making it into the 50s for this afternoon in oakland today, look for a high of 64 degrees and it will be 68 degrees in san jose and 62 for the high in livermore. we've had these cool temperatures, but it will be even lower tomorrow. this as that rain comes in. so we are going to see the storm system coming in, churning up some waves near the coast. so a high surf advisory will be in effect. there will be some large breaking waves, possibly 15 to 18ft, and there may be a few waves that could reach up to 20ft. so very dangerous. near the coastline, we can see the storm system that's approaching and driving up those big waves. as of now, we're seeing some light showers just to our north up around the pacific northwest. we are expecting this to come in as early as tomorrow morning, but notice the system is
5:22 am
weakening so it won't be widespread. heavy rain, just kind of hit or miss showers and also more of the same on sunday into early next week, we see several storm systems coming in keeping it wet, but it does look like christmas day will be dry and rainfall totals for at least the first part of next week will be fairly significant for the north bay, and a good soaker for the rest of the bay area. while the sierra sees some snow, there may be possibly a foot or more of snow into early next week. and a look at our 7-day forecast for the first day o of winte which starts tomorrow. it will be in the way of scattered showers. we'll see that off and on and into early next week. we will see some times of rain christmas eve. we will be watching out for those scattered showers. mike, you're getting reports of a new crash in oakland. yeah, i checked the camera because it's reported south 880 at high street. remember, this is our high street exit here on the northbound side. southbound is just over the high rise. i don't see any problems visible from
5:23 am
our shot, but again, it's cut off at the top of the screen coming down into the area. that might be the case coming down to the bottom of the screen. again, no slowing sensors and no problems reported, but the chp does have reports of a crash. one vehicle ended up facing the wrong way south 880 approaching high street. we'll track that. meanwhile, the rest of this east bay shot shows a smooth, easy drive. highway four no problem for visibility or for the speeds. westbound 37 at lakeville highway, there is still a crash on the grid. might be blocking the slow lane. back to you. thank you. mike. 522 right now next here on today in the bay nbc bay area response two viewers deserve their money back, but two companies aren't following through. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura. nbc bay area responds next. hey, there it is. day 12 of the 12 days of christmas snack mix edition. and since today is the last day, i give you something really special. these are my mama's jalapeno poppers. they are so nice! cut a jalapeno in half filled with some seasoned

5:28 am
retailer's instructions and mailed back the unneeded unit to get his 206 bucks back. but one month later, no refund. the store told him it was still processing it. well, philip asked for our help. we contacted the retailer. it then returned his 206 bucks. if you're hitting a dead end chasing a refund, maybe we can help. just snap the qr code on screen right now to fill out our consumer complaint form online. have a great weekend. i'm ginger conejero saab. we're giving you a live look inside terminal one here at sfo. you're seeing some long lines, but it's moving relatively quickly. up ahead, we'll tell you what you need to know. if you're trying to get ahead of the holiday travel

coming to the bay area. this is today in the bay. thanks so much for joining us on this friday morning. i'm kris sanchez, i'm in for laura garcia and i'm marcus washington. you know a lot to talk about this friday morning. first we have team coverage for you starting with that holiday travel rush. we'll take you out to sfo in just a moment. but let's start with a look at that forecast for you, meteorologist kari hall. of course tracking what we can expect out there. kari. let's get a look at these airport delays that we're getting early on this friday morning. and it's chicago that's really seeing the biggest delays as snow moves into the area. and then elsewhere we are seeing the other flights on time on average, as well as what we're seeing for the west now. it's starting out well, so hopefully it holds up. but once again, this is the area we're watching. if you're going to chicago, michigan, over towards ohio and then pennsylvania and new york, that's where we are seeing these bands of snow coming in, and
5:33 am
that may cause more delays, but it does look good here at home as we are going to have some dry weather today. the fog may cause a few issues. we're going to be watching that as our high temperatures today mostly reach into the 60s. mike, you've got a note for the weekend travel as well. yeah, well, a lot of folks are worried about getting out of town and we're talking about that. that makes the morning commute a little bit lighter. but all weekend, starting tonight, folks in town will have to watch north 101. the university avenue exit will be blocked starting tonight all the way through monday. early morning, open by 5 a.m. they're doing a project, finishing up the last of the project through the area, so watch for that. meanwhile, the roadways right now are showing that lighter volume, as they have been for the last couple of days. we're looking at a smooth flow of traffic as we zoom the map over here. we are looking over at the south bay north 880 right around stevens creek boulevard. disabled vehicle may be in middle lanes. i'm tracking that. no slowing shows up, but if you're traveling through the area, watch for flashing lights. back to you. thanks, mike. well, with five days until christmas,
5:34 am
a record number of people are hitting the roads and the skies. in fact, triple a says it will be one for the record books. with 119 million people set to trav. today in the bay ginger conejero saab beating the crowds there over at sfo this morning. and ginger, i know you were there just weeks ago, so how does it compare from that thanksgiving travel to now? well, we saw some busy activity also during the thanksgiving holiday, marcus and chris, and we're seeing that again this morning. take a look behind me. we're at terminal one here at sfo. you're seeing some long lines here before the security checkpoint, but it has been moving fairly quickly. we're talking about holiday travel this year. it will officially begin tomorrow, december 21st, and it will continue to wednesday, january 1st. it is 12 days long. 12 days of christmas. maybe it's two days more than the last two years. now that's a slice of the holiday travel pie. but the majority of the projected 119 million traveling
5:35 am
will do so 50 miles or more. the majority of people will be traveling on the roads, and with gas prices trending lower than they did last year. that is the that is the case. 107 million people will be traveling by car. now sunday, december 22nd is expected to be the worst day on the road. 7.8 million are taking to the skies. what we are recommending is that give yourself plenty of time at the airport, because what we saw over thanksgiving, especially here in dc, is that traffic going to the airport is bad. a lot of people are stuck in their uber, stuck in their lifts or in their taxi, or they're getting dropped off by a family member, or they're driving, and they planned ahead and knew that they had tsa precheck. i'm not checking you bag. i should be okay, but then they're stuck. so take their word for it. come to the airport early. now, what's interesting about this year's data? triple a says there are other modes of travel that's
5:36 am
seeing a spike. those people taking cruises, trains and busses. that number has increased this year, hitting 4.5 million people, which is the most in 20 years. now, just moments ago i did check flightaware to see cancellations and delays. we're looking at about 30 delays here at sfo. we're also seeing about four cancellations so far. we will continue to see how those numbers move throughout the day. tomorrow is the officiaial sta of the travel season. the holiday travel rush for this two week or 12 day period. but these are people who are trying to get ahead of that rush. we'll check in with them in the next hour. we're live at sfo. yeah. that's right. ginger conejero saab today in the bay. i would try to get ahead to. yeah. i t think te want you to direct traffic though. in the background. when you're in between your live shots, folks are wandering around. yeah. they will. this way, this way. yeah. you got it down. thanks, ginger. look, a lot of folks heading out to do whatever days before christmas. and thousands of amazon
5:37 am
contractors and drivers, as well as warehouse workers across the country, remain on strike this morning. so that includes dozens of workers at the facility in bayview in san francisco. teamsters accused the company of not recognizing the union or meeting the deadline to come up with a bargaining table. amazon says that the group is attempting to push a false narrative, and that customers deliveries will not be impacted by this demonstration. happening today a woman tied to a death which sparked outrage in san francisco, is scheduled to make her first court appearance. 63 year old yanfang wu died last july from a head injury, two days after she was shoved to the sidewalk in the bayview district. at the time, police ruled that it was an accident and did not make any arrests. but that sparked outrage because the woman accused of pushing her was later tied to a separate, different violent assault on another elderly chinese woman. last week, district attorney brooke jenkins announced charges and suspect thea hopkins is now
5:38 am
facing charges of assault and battery, resulting in great bodily injury. later today, south bay homeless advocates will honor those who died in the streets this year. san jose mayor matt mahan and congressman elect sam liccardo are expected to participate in this morning's event. it's scheduled to begin at 1115 at the boccardo reception center on little orchard street in san jose. this comes as earlier this month, volunteers from the tombstone project unveiled a memorial at the headstone. each represents one of the nearly 200 people who died this year on the streets of santa clara county. the group's founder says this year includes the highest number of tombstones since starting that tribute just five years ago. the tombstones will be on display at san jose city hall to raise awareness about the struggles of the unhoused. peninsula leaders are promising changes in the wake of a tsunami alert two weeks ago, which left a lot of people panicked along the coast and asking questions, including why
5:39 am
was the tsunami siren never activated last night? san mateo county agencies held a sort of postmortem town hall in half moon bay to address those concerns. leaders say the siren would have caused additional panic when there were still a lot of unanswered questions. they say also that they are making improvements. what we can do is we can put actually physical infrastructure out along the coast so that people can go ahead and say, i'm in zone x, i'm in zone y, and the information from the county can say, move from this zone to this zone. if you're in these zones, you're safe. we were getting more information that as time went on, there was not a wave, but they could not verify it. so we were still waiting and we had enough time to sound the sirens if we needed to. some residents argue that panic had already set in with the phone alert sent by the national weather service, and that no sirens just added to the confusion. to avoid that,
5:40 am
next time the county is working on developing an online map that people will be able to access. 539 right now, as we take a live look in san francisco, this is where it may feel like winter look, it's been feeling like winter across the bay area for quite a while now, but officially, winter starts tomorrow. today in the bay, cinthia pimentel has more on the start of the new season. winter is coming. the new season starts on saturday and it will align with the winter solstice. so what happens in space saturday morning? well, the sun's rays will be hitting the tropic of capricorn in the southern hemisphere, marking their summer here in the northern hemisphere, we will experience the shortest day of the year with about 9.5 hours of daylight. after this, the days will slowly get longer to reach the summer solstice. six months from now, the winter season will start with some rain and snow. so let's go over to kari for details on the weekend forecast. and it is a busy travel day. cynthia. so we're looking across the state for
5:41 am
where you may be headed and some of the other cities, and forecast that we'll see. if you're going farther north, expect tperatures to be cooler in the low 60s for eureka, but it will be mostly cloudy sunshine for socal and temperatures in the 70s and low 80s there. if you're staying at home, saturday is going to be a busy shopping day in the south bay. it's going to be cloudy. temperatures in the low 60s. there may at times be some sprinkles, but looking at much of the rain farther to the north, as well as a chance in the tri-valley, if you're going to, let's say, the san francisco premium outlets, it's going to be cloudy in the upper 50s and low 60s, so we're dressing in layers as it will be a chilly weekend with some times of rain in san francisco and also some scattered showers on sunday. but there may be a little bit more sunshine here or there if you just want to escape the shopping and the craziness altogether, maybe take a nice, serene drive down highway one. if you're going through big sur, expect temperatures in the low to mid

60s and mostly cloudy. and this weekend in tahoe it is going to be a nice one. very windy though. temperatures there headed for the low 50s and there will be a mix of rain and snow showers on saturday, but overall shouldn't be too bad for any travel. and mike, you're looking at some east bay slowing ahe. yeah. a new crash here. a westbound 80 at appian way may leave a vehicle in the middle of the roadway. chp reports someone walking away from the vehicle with it still in the freeway lanes. we're watching forhat. meanwhile, an earlier crash down here, southbound 880, may be slowing after a traffic break heading down toward high street in the coliseum complex. that should be clearing. we'll track that closely right now. just minor slowing over here. the bay bridge shows some slowing on the incline. no metering lights because of the lighter volume this pre holiday friday. but we still have work going on south 101 as you're approaching the 23rd street overcrossing. maybe another hour while the crews are there. so there is restriction and slowing getting into the city. we sometimes see that and we know there's two games

scheduled here over at chase center, so there will be a crowd around chase center for the invisalign. bay area women's classic there again, a double header at chase center starting at four 3530. i'm sorry. this evening, as we look at the rest of the bay, smooth lighter drive, but we are looking at the south bay as well with north 880, the disabled vehicle at stevens creek, and we're looking at weekend work closing the university avenue off ramp starting tonight off north 101. back to you. i got bamboozled by one of those little closures overnight. almost late to work. mike. well, football fans are gearing up for a big christmas game on netflix ahead on today in the bay, the way the major streaming service is preparing to show the game without any glitches. and we'll take you behind the scenes of how they're doing it. plus, empowering young women athletes, thelag football star, known as the female jerry rice, shares the push to get the sport at the olympics. geraldine rice maybe. and here's another edition of

chino and what to expect. today it's going to be partly cloudy, but it looks like more clouds than sun later on this afternoon. high temperatures in the low 60s and we are gearing up for some scattered showers in our weekend forecast. we'll take a look at when and where coming up in just a few minutes. and right now we're looking at 80. those headlights are heading south past the coliseum complex. top of the screen is high street, where there were reports of a crash. i never saw it on this live camera, but i did see slowing on the approach out of downtown oakland for a traffic break. we'll give you the update, the latest coming up. and now to an update about a family of four found dead in a milpitas apartment. police now say they are investigating this as a murder suicide. officers found the bodies of vin nguyen and betty pham at turning apartments on tuesday, along

with the bodies of tir four year old, their nine year old son andnd four year old daughte. police say each family member had been shot. milpitas police believe the family died on saturday night, but they are still waiting for specific details on an exact cause of death and timeline from the medical coroner. a new surge in demand for energy will likely fuel new jobs across america. that is one of the conclusions made by the authors of a new industry analysis. researchers at grid strategies are now forecasting new growth in power demand and at higher rates than previously estimated. the growth will be fueled in areas including ai data centers and chip manufacturing. and again, they believe job growth will likely be one of the benefits. there are a lot of electricity jobs for people of various skill levels, with advanced degrees, or without college degrees at all. ibew is very active in this space. they're building all kinds of, you know, switchyards

and substations and transmission lines and installing transformers. and there's going to be a tremendous amount of that work, really, all over the country and northern california included. so they also found that while utility companies like pg&e can probably handle the added load, the challenge could come in dealing with the surprise of facing greater usage on a daily basis. well, if you think delivering high quality streaming content is easy, think again. and when it comes to a big ticket event, millions of people will be watching and it gets even trickier. trickier is code for glitchy or sometimes, especially for things like streaming nfl games. today in the bay business and tech reporter scott mcgrew takes a look at what it takes for streamers to hit pay dirt. good morning. on christmas day, netflix will stream not just a football game, but football game with a big star at halftime. there are also games on nfl plus and paramount. streaming is fundamentally different than
5:50 am
broadcast because with broadcast like you're watching now, it makes no difference if another person joins in to watch or a thousand people or a million people. it's all the same to tv stations. we just send out one signal. streaming is far different. it matters how many people watch, because the more that watch, the bigger the load on the servers. video from our peacock streaming service from our first try at a streaming a game last year, it went just fine. big christmas ahead. are all the computers ready? yes they are. well, you know, i tell you, it's the internet. that's the challenge. i think there's a lot of capacity that can be built on the back end of these systems that the peacock and now netflix use for their christmas games. but it's really the internet that becomes thessue. you you actually summarized it great. every single view now is a single session back in the tv days. you're right, it was one broadcast. everybody got the same thing. now everyone has an individual session through the internet. so the capacity on the back end systems is number one. but then also making sure the internet capacity, cdns and everyone's devices are
5:51 am
performing correctly. it's a very massively complex project to pull off. so it's not it's not trivial, it's not easy. and we're proud to say we partnered with peacock last year and pulled it off very, very well. as a matter of fact, i thought it was one of the best live events we've ever done, and we've done super bowls, world cups for the last ten years. so we've done massive, large live events, and we're proud to say we were part of a very successful one with peacock. and now we'll see how netflix. right? yeah, it's very alarming, by the way, to a tv guy for you to say back in the tv days. but streaming has really gone mainstream, right? i mean, you were talking about this, the idea of watchingomething on peacock, on netflix, on amazon. the tyson fight ran into a couple of problems, i remember, but given the size of it, it went well. well, you know, i tell you, i'll tell you the difference between peacock and maybe netflix is jake paul event was that the ability to have issues is going to happen. like it's just the way that it's set up. i think the peacock situation uses comviva for real time monitoring. so we were able to, with peacock, show exactly
5:52 am
when something was starting to happen, and they were immediately able to fix it. the difference in the in the jake paul fight, those issues never went away. they seem to be, you know, all the way through the entire event, which tells me that they don't have the same real time connection to the consumer. they know that there's an issue and they start trying to find it. but the ability to understand what's happening, especially in a streaming event, the ability to see what's happening as it's happening and fix it, is the answer. there will be good. it's a good ceo answer. you know, the reason is because they didn't hire us. so let me ask you, and i hate to even bring this up. what is your biggest nightmare when it comes to any sort of streaming event? what's the thing that you check and double check and triple check before you go? okay, let's do it. yeah. you got to check every layer from your source all the way out to the devices. has enough capacity and enough enough bandwidth all the way through. so there's actually not one single thing because of the fact that it's a complex system, which makes it even more important that you just have to have that in your dna. live events are very different than vod. totally different ballgame. totally different. so i think
5:53 am
the ability to understand live event distribution and streaming and making sure you check all those capacity boxes would be the one thing, but it's comprised of many things, which is why it's so hard to do. well, i appreciate you being with us, and i and i look forward to these football games. hey, have a great holiday and i wish you the best of luck. the ceo of comviva joining us this morning guys. back to you. thanks, scott. all right. so i think we can probably now agree that the ball bigger than ever. and you might not realize it, but that holds true for women's football as well. yeah. and you may not know the person known as the jerry rice of women's football is helping lead the charge. her name is adrienne smith, and she's played women's tackle football for more than a decade. she's also has more championship rings than tom brady. hey, she's hopeful about women's flag football coming to the olympics, along with the news that this week, silicon valley may soon have a women's national football conference team. and she is the founder of gridiron queendom.
5:54 am
this is to boost exposure for the sport that's given her so much. i've just been blessed by this game and it's something that i loved since i was a little girl, since the age of three, and i feel fortunate to have been born in an era where i could live out my football dream. and so when i founded gridiron queendom, i wanted to provide that type of opportunity and that type of support to other girls and women who dream about playing football as well. and it doesn't just stop at football. smith is also the creator of the popular card game. it's called blitz champs. that's something like uno. this is where the players can learn about the sport of football. i got it still is football, but it's, you know, a different form of it. i got to talk to her about that, about the game. and she's like, you don't have to know everything about football. but you learned about the strategies and stuff. so i was like, oh, maybe a little stocking stuffer. there you go. yeah. she says it's a safe space for you to learn football without feeling foolish because you're learning a new game overall. yeah. you don't want to
5:55 am
learn at a sports bar. yeah, not the place. why are they running that way? excuse me. i have a question. everybody. so home run isn't football go sports. oh, that's. right, we have a little time to get in some outdoor football and enjoy a little bit of sunshine for the afternoon. tomorrow is when we see rain coming back. so we're starting out cool this morning. and also the fog is not as widespread as it's been the past couple of days. we're at 43 now in danville and it's 45 in napa. as you step out the door in san rafael, it is 45 degrees. it's a cool start, but once again, we're seeing the low clouds, fog not as thick. and it's in the upper 40s here in walnut creek. it's going to be a cool morning with some peeks of sunshine overall throughout the day we are going to stay cool with a brie bump in temperatures for the afternoon. that brings us to the low 60s in dublin. it will be in the mid 60s in palo alto and in san francisco. look for a high of 62 and 57 in novato. so we see the cooler temperatures where the fog will hang around a
5:56 am
little bit longer. but tomorrow it's mostly cloudy as this storm system comes in and we can see the rain that's just off the coast, and several more storms that are out in the pacific that will be coming in, timing out this system. we'll see the rain developing right at about 7 to 8:00 in the north bay and moving into san francisco with some spotty showers. notice that how you look very closely at your city? you may not see any rain at all throughout the day, but there could be some showers off and on in the forecast through sunday as well as monday. there is more storm systems coming in, and the possibility of rain for the north bay will be the highest. elsewhere. we're looking at some light rainfall totals for the first day of winter, and next week we'll have more rain coming in and on christmas eve, watching out for some rain late christmas eve night into christmas day. mike, you have a traffic break now in oakland. yeah, this is continuing slowdown for the nimitz freeway. south 880 originally reported around high street where we didn't see it on
5:57 am
the live camera near that intersection. we're looking at 29th, where may be a better location for this traffic break and the activity from the earlier crash. no major injuries, but this is slow traffic for quite some time as you're traveling out of downtown oakland and toward the coliseum. complex, 580 and highway 13 are clear, but if you are using the nimitz, you can get through the area there just some activity there by the coliseum. meanwhile, westbound 80, your commute direction. there may be a second crash as you head past appian way. the first one left the vehicle in lanes and that did cause slowing. there's enough traffic now that the metering lights have been turned on, but overall the bay is looking like a lighter drive. back to you. all right. thanks, mike. well, happening now, san francisco state university classes resuming after a shelter in place forced the campus to shut down yesterday. officers say that they received some kind of anonymous threat and placed the campus under a shelter in place. around noon. students were asked to stay away from the campus. university canceled all classes and activities. shelter in place was lifted after about four hours. well, bird flu now has spread far beyond birds.
