1991, when henderson stole third base, passing the record for the most bases stolen in major league history. he went on to record 1406 stolen bases. but back in 1991, when he surpassed lou brock's 938 stolen bases, he celebrated, as you saw, by lifting the base over his head. lou brock brock was the center of great base stealing. but today i am the greatest of all time. thank you. today, the bay's alyssa goard has a look back at rickey henderson. storied 25 years in major league baseball, 14 of them with the oakland a's. his hall of fame record breaking career, and reflections from those who called him a friend. i want to thank the haas family, the oakland organization, the city of oakland and all your beautiful fans for supporting m. in 1991, rickey henderson shared

these words at the oakland coliseum after he broke the mlb record for most stolen bases of all time. known as the man of steel, he wound up stealing a staggering 1406 bases by the end of his career, which spanned nine teams and 25 years, with 14 of those seasons in the green and gold. henderson was born in chicago, but was raised in oakland, where he was a star high school running back. first time i ever heard of rickey henderson. it was actually when he was in high school playing football at oakland tech. but henderson turned down football scholarships to sign with the athletics. in 1976, friend and former teammate bip roberts, who also grew up inakland, said henderson inspired a generation of athletes in the town. that's the impact he had on all of us as players. we wanted to be like rickey. if we could be like rickey, we could make it to the big leagues, and if we could make it to the big leagues, then

it's a dream come true. and that dream started by watching rickey henderson play baseball. a two time world series champion, first with the a's in the 1989 battle of the bay, then again in 1993 with toronto. henderson is also baseball's all time leader in leadoff home runs and runs scored. when you start talking about the greatest leadoff hitters of all times, rickey henderson is that guy and he is from oakland. the left fielder was elected into the baseball hall of fame in 2009, the first year he was eligible. he remained an icon for oakland and the a's. in 2017, the team dedicated the field in his honor, and henderson got plenty of well-deserved recognition as the team said its final goodbyes to the coliseum in september. adriana henderson throwing out the first pitch to a proud papa. when the a's played their last game at the coliseum, henderson was there, along with fellow a's

delivering high quality streaming content is easy, think again. when it comes to big ticket events, millions of people will watch. it gets even trickier, especially for things like streaming nfl games. today in the bay scott mcgrew looks deeper into what it takes for streamers to hit pay dirt. good morning. on christmas day, netflix will stream not just a football game, but football game with a big star at halftime. there are also games on nfl plus and paramount. streaming is fundamentally different than broadcast because with broadcast like you're watching now, it makes no difference if another person joins in to watch or a thousand people or a million people. it's all the same to tv stations. we just send out one signal. streaming is far different. it matters how many people watch, because the more that watch, the bigger the load on the servers. video from our peacock streaming service from our first try at a streaming a game last year, it went just
7:16 am
fine. big christmas ahead. are all the computers ready? yes they are. well, you know, i tell you, it's the internet. that's the challenge. i think there's a lot of capacity that can be built on the back end of these systems that the peacock and now netflix use for their christmas games. but it's really the internet that becomes the issue. you you actually summarized it great. every single view now is a single session back in the tv days. you're right, it was one broadcast. everybody got the same thing. now everyone has an individual session through the internet. so the capacity on the back end systems is number one. but then also making sure the internet capacity, cdns and everyone's devices are performing correctly. it's a very massively complex project to pull off. so it's not it's not trivial, it's not easy. and we're proud to say we partnered with peacock last year and pulled it off very, very well. as a matter of fact, i thought it was one of the best live events we've ever done, and we've done super bowls, world cups for the last ten years. so we've done massive, large live events, and we're proud to say we were part of a very successful one with peacock. and now we'll see how netflix. right? yeah, it's very alarming, by the way, to a tv guy for you
7:17 am
to say back in the tv days. but streaming has really gone mainstream, right? i mean, you were talking about this, the idea of watching something on peacock, on netflix, on amazon. the tyson fight ran into a couple of problems, i remember, but given the size of it, it went well. well, you know, i tell you, i'll tell you the difference between peacock and maybe netflix is jake paul event. was that the ability to have issues is going to happen. like it's just the way that it's set up. i think the peacock situation uses comviva for real time monitoring. so we were able to, with peacock, show exactly when something was starting to happen, and they were immediately able to fix it. the difference in the in the jake paul fight, those issues never went away. they seem to be, you know, all the way through the entire event, which tells me that they don't have the same real time connection to the consumer. they know that there's an issue and they start trying to find it. but the ability to understand what'sappening, especially in a streaming event, the ability to see what's happening as it's happening and fix it, is the answer. there will be good. it's a good ceo answer. you know, the reason is
7:18 am
because they didn't hire us. so let me ask you, and i hate to even bring this up. what is your biggest nightmare when it comes to any sort of streaming event? what's the thing that you check and double check and triple check before you go, okay, let's do it. yeah. you got to check every layer from your source all the way out to the devices. has enough capacity and enough enough bandwidth all the way through. so there's actually not one single thing because of the fact that it's a complex system, which makes it even more important that you just have to have that in your dna. live events are very different than vod. totally different ballgame. totally different. so i think the ability to understand live event distribution and streaming and making sure you check all those capacity boxes would be the one thing, but it's comprised of many things, which is why it's so hard to do. well, i appreciate you being with us, and i and i look forward to these football games. hey, have a great holiday and i wish you the best of luck. the ceo of comviva joining us this morning guys. back to you scott. thanks so much. after that story, it's easy to say football is bigger

get right to it. so i can show you what our mobile doppler radar storm ranger is scanning. we've got some light activity to moderate at times, but you also notice some snow coming down in the sierra. now, this initial system is on the lighter side, but look what's out ahead. i'm going to zoom this out so you can get a better idea of the very stormy weather pattern that we're about to settle into. look at this out in the pacific. now, this is going to bring a series of storms, one right after the other, which is going to bring concern for flooding in some areas, especially up in the north bay. now, fog and visibility, if you're going to be out and about within the next hour or so, keep in mind we're down to less than three miles in san carlos, san francisco. look at half moon bay, but it also stretches in through parts of san jose and the tri-valley. we've got that limited visibility. temperature wise, we're fairly mild. temperatures have been seasonable so far these past couple of days, and that's what we can continue to see. in addition to that dangerous coast, we've got a high surf advisory. this is going to be in place through 4 p.m. tonight, but we're going to transition from a high surf advisory to a high surf warning
7:22 am
heading into tonight. and here's the reason why. so follow along here. at about 530 we're going to start to see some heavier pockets of rain moving through areas mainly to the north. but notice in san francisco we do get some periods of heavy downpours to about 930. we're going to see this decreasing by early monday morning. but then we've got another system coming through, and that cold front is going to bring some changes. as far as rain totals go, we're going to see fairly light rain totals for this first system. and look what's happening heading into tuesday morning. this is when we're going to get some very stormy activity that's going to include rain, wind and the possibility for some lightning as well. monday night into tuesday is when we start to see that activity really ramp up, where you see these kind of red orange pockets of rain there. that's where that instability can create the possibility for some isolated thunderstorms. we clear out a bit on tuesday evening, just in time for christmas day, and then those rain totals are really going to accumulate in the north bay. now over the 7-day forecast, you're going to see rain late on monday and then a
7:23 am
bigger storm heading into monday night into tuesday. wednesday for christmas day things will be dry, but then we get another system that rolls through heading into next weekend. this is going to impact your travel, whether that's on the road in the state of california, along the grapevine or in the air. so please make sure to plan accordingly for a very rainy week ahead. all right, thanks for the heads up. vianey 22 past the hour. much more ahead on today in the bay. coming up, the warriors coming off that embarrassing loss in memphis. they almost blew another lead in minnesota. what steph curry did to rally the dubs to victory.

41 and another drizzle start to our day. we've got cloud cover, limited visibility. temperatures right now are in the 50s. if you look at some of the cameras, we're starting to get some clearing as far as the rain goes, but we've got a lot in store when it comes to the storm systems on the way. storm ranger right now scanning the skies. things are starting to get a bit quiet. we saw some rain overnight, and here's what we're monitoring up. and next out in the pacific, we've got this series of storms lining up right here. we're going to get them one right after the other as we head into the upcoming week. so let's break down what you can expect and what to look out for if you're going to be out and about today. so we've got temperature wise, we're in the 40s and 50s to start, but limited visibility down to about three miles in san francisco, down to about two miles in through parts of the tri-valley. tracey included san jose down to less than six miles. we've also

got this high surf advisory. dangerous coastline today. please be mindful of this wave heights reaching upwards of 20ft. now this is expected to be in place through 4 p.m, but then it turns into a high surf warning. and this is likely going to get extended into monday and tuesday as well. because of that faster run up and the danger for rip currents. now at about 530, we're going to get another quick line of moving storms that pushes through some heavier pockets at times, also expected to bring some gusty conditions. and if you notice, some of the totals for today will be on the lighter side. emphasis more on the north bay, less than an inch there. but then we're monitoring our second, more impactful system that moves through, and this one is going to make its impact heading into late monday early tuesday morning. i want you to focus on the colors here. we've got the reds and the purples. that instability could create the possibility for some isolated thunderstorms. and that's going to remain a threat. in addition to that, rain rates will pick up, which will bring some concern for some localized flooding in the typical areas where we've seen it in the past. we also see a boost in those

rain totals, and this is going to set us up for what's ahead. so christmas eve is looking very active. we've got rain, wind and sierra snow. but then looking ahead in the long range outlook, if you notice. friday, december 27th, this system is even stronger. the high rain rate totals pick up even more for that friday saturday outlook ahead, and then we start to see more of a moisture tap with an atmospheric river extending some of that water vapor into our forecast. so your 7-day forecast looks like this. we've got again, rain late heading into monday, an impactful system early tuesday morning. those early morning commuters really have to be mindful on tuesday morning for ponding water, but also gusty winds. and keep in mind, by the time we get to wednesday, we definitely need this break. that saturated soil is going to bring big concerns for downed trees and power outages, along with flooding concerns in localized areas. perfect day for kids to get out and test those new gifts. all right. thanks. vianey 4

7:48 am
all have had an incredible journey. their family recently grew after kelly gave birth to a baby boy as a surrogate for her best friend. today in the bay's janelle wang shares their beautiful story. oh baby tummy. who's your little brother? this guy. oh. nbc bay area's bigad shaban and his wife, kelly, are parents to five year old reya. these are so many rules. and two year old ziad brie. we eventually adopted our daughter and then my son. we got one embryo in the ivf process, and kelly then became pregnant again. she was nine months along during this interview in early october. it's not my baby. my wife is pregnant with another man's baby, but i'm okay with it. kelly is a surrogate for her best friend, natasha. we had many, many, many years of infertility with these blessings and these miracles that we were

given, it felt like it was my turn to kind of pay it back a little bit. this embryo, like this baby, was not mine and is biologically connected to the parents, the intended parents. when kelly first told me. i remember telling her, i don't think that's a good idea. that's because kelly suffers from retinal detachment in both eyes. it's when the retina lifts away from the back of the eye. she's undergone ten eye surgeries in six years, so those eye surgeries prevented me from even attempting to have a baby because i was on medications that wouldn't be compatible with life. she's lost a substantial amount of vision. but for kelly and bigad, starting a family was always the plan. i'm sitting in the eye doctor chair i had. they had attempted another surgery to try and save some of my vision, and it failed. and literally while i'm sitting in that chair, we get a phone call that there is a mom in modesto that is interested in us. on october 10th, 2019, the siobhans met

their daughter. we're in an open adoption. wow. a few months later, kelly was cleared to try to conceive again. today, ziyad is full of life. i typekit we just, like, still can't believe that he's in the world. oh, did i take a sip too? the pendulum is really swung, you know, in both directions of, like, feeling like god. why am i, like, so unlucky? and then also, why am i so incredibly blessed? the ramifications of all that, of her having lost vision and it doesn't seem fair. it's not fair. and i think her choosing to want to do good in the midst of that, i just think is a testament to who she is. yeah. and whose baby is this? right? matt king. typekit. sha'carri is auntie chachi's baby? that's right. what kelly wanted to do was to help auntie chachi. who is natasha weinstein? dawes, kelly's best friend since high

school. the first child came pretty easily. she developed a heart condition after giving birth to her daughter, london. doctors told natasha she could not carry again. i called kelly just like. like gasping for air. just how sad i was. but yeah, she. i never expected her to, like, fix that. she just offered. there was no ask. there was no ask. it just felt like the right thing to do. it never felt. it never felt. i never questioned it. the offer came in a text message after kelly's eye doctor gave her the okay to go through the process. it's like an immense amount of gratitude. that word also, i think, falls short of like, what? what it feels like. oh my god. two weeks after this interview, natasha and her husband welcomed beckham, ocean kelly doors. i

love this mess. and immediately she was just like, that't's your son. there's definitely always been a part of me that's like, is this is this real? like, is this, is this really going to happen? and then he was just there like perfect. i've actually never in any step of this process had any like regrgrets. i feel like it was something like i felt called to and something that i just felt just made sense in light of how, like our family formed. gave a kiss on a nosy. yeah. not enough words. not enough words. thank you. janelle, for bringing us that story. bigad and kelly, we bowed down. up next, a quick look at our top stories, including the world remembering a bay area legend. oakland's own man of steel, rickey henderson. the massive legacy
