vegas and talk to santa via chatgpt. that's this week on press here. good morning everyone. i'm scott mcgrew. you see folks holiday shopping and hanging stockings by the chimney with care. you know, it's a sign that ces will soon be here. the consnsumer electronics show that runs every january in las vegas. brian, let's start with how complicated and crowded and big this conference is for someone who's never been. it's got to be one of the biggest shows on earth, right? definitely is. and even though there's a lot of crowds, there's a lot of people there. it's really about making a plan when you go to the show, right? so we expect thousands of exhibitors over well over 100,000 people to come to this event. and the key to it is the tips i always tell people is we have an incredible app. download it before you go to the show. if you're going to attend and make a plan, figure out what exhibits
9:02 am
what type of technology trends you want to see. and then the last one wear comfy shoes. it's we're on the las vegas convention center campus, the venetian campus, and then the c-space campus over at the aria. it's all across vegas. so comfy shoes. definitely a recommendation. okay, so not at the convention center. it's been a couple of years since i went. it is at the convention center. that's one campus. we're at, the venetian and we're at aria. we're across the entire vegas footprint. very good. so are you back to a full house? i mean, you know, there was the post pandemic where maybe people didn't attend for a variety of reasons or they were virtual. are you back to where you were pre-pandemic? i think we're definitely have been building on momentum since the pandemic. and one of those, we'll have the official numbers after we do our independent audit of the trade show. were you were you back last year? we were around 138,000. so getting close to basically where we were prior to the pandemic. and i think a lot of that is a recognition of, you know, i think people are ready
9:03 am
to meet in person, are back, and our trade show offers that, you know, apple does this kind of odd thing where people are in person watching a video of recorded executives. so nobody's actually there in front of them has virtual worked, because one of the problems with with virtual is you don't have the networking and you don't have access to, you know, one of the highlights for ces, for me, which is these just jaw dropping show floors. yeah, i think that there's certainly a role for virtual to play in terms of providing access to live streams of keynotes, and we'll have an incredible lineup of keynotes from nvidia and volvo and beyond. there's also the ability to get on demand features later, but you've touched upon a really important concept with trade shows, which is that being able to see the demos in person, to see those exhibits, there's an authenticity of being able to enjoy the technology in person and really get to experience it and understand how it's going to impact a consumer's life or a business's operations. so, you
9:04 am
know, when you go to the show floor, you see these gigantic tvs. you know, years ago we thought a 30 inch tv, that's enormous. the smart refrigerator always makes some kind of appearance. what's what's new? i mean, because tvs can only get so big and smart refrigerators can only get so smart. what's what's going on in the electronics world that's new? yeah. of course. well, certainly with the television side, you know, there is going to be always a range of different sizes, but it's about the features that are on board. so you've seen with lg, samsung and some of our other exhibitors there last year they had made or i should say earlier in 2024, they made up the show announcements about having ai processors on board. it's not just a hardware upgrade for better visual and audio fidelity, but what you're really seeing as well is by adding in ai processors, you can get more features on your tv and you can already enjoy some of them. now, if you watch prime streaming, you can pause a scenend you can see exactly which actor is in each scene. the next step of
9:05 am
that with ai on board is, well, what if you really like what the actor or a actress is wearing during the scene? you want to buy it. interactive e-commerce features that really transform the television from being just an entertainment console to really this coordinating smart home command center that can communicate with some of these other devices that we've mentioned, like a smart refrigerator or more. so it's about personalization. that's the story that's on display at ces. an investor call recently, the ceo of best buy pointed out that there isn't an electronic made that doesn't at least have some part that is coming from overseas, usually china. well, representing the technology industry as you do, what is your what is your industry? think of these threatened tariffs against china and mexico and canada? yeah of course. well there's certainly it's something that we're watching quite closely in our industry across the board. and when you think about tariffs right there's an impact thahat uld be happening on costs. we know that looking post pandemic, about a third of inflation could
9:06 am
be the post pandemic. inflation could be the result of the 1 to 1.5% price increase from tariffs across the board. on the electronics side, the annual household spending could increase up to $7,600 in a year. and that's from one of the studies that have come out of yale university. so it's a direct impact on the consumer and household spending. so it's something that the industry is going to have to watch quite closely and learn how to navigate, because certainly that's at stake here with tariffs. you've answered this question, but it is one that i have almost as a policy started asking manufacturers and manufacturer representatives. et cetera. to be clear, because this is something that americans are growing to be clear on, but not yet. when a product comes into the united states, a sony receiver for your home theater system, you know, a roku device that was built in china. when a product comes into the united states, it is the manufacturer,
9:07 am
the importer that pays the tariff, and it is the american consumer who's that cost is most likely passed on to the american pays the tariff. yes, certainly the american pays the tariff on this one. it is not the country that it originates paying the tariff. that's something to be quite clear on.n. that ct is passed through directly to the consumer in this case. and that's why i what i'm really excited about cs two is this idea of we're bringing back south hall online again with design and source, and you'll see comnies that are talking about how to diversify the supply chain. we'll certainly still see china have a lot of those parts coming in. and being a part of that supply chain story of building the components of technology. but india, the philippines and other countries in apac region will be showcasing some of their efforts in design and source to really diversify the supply chain. south hall is the one with the smaller gadgets and the smaller companies accessories and design source. i would say maybe smaller because it's where you find the spinning, spinning spaghetti fork. yeah. oh no, not necessarily. it's more the
9:08 am
components that go right into the system itself. spaghetti. spaghetti fork is probably the venetian campus where you'll see some great food technology. fair enough. all right. well, last question is, i heard you off the top. you know, make a plan, download the app. but for those who are going, what's the what's the can't miss. yeah of course. so for those who can't miss, i would definitely say tune in to some of the live streams on the keynotes. we're going to kick it off with jensen wong, co-founder and ceo of nvidia, which has had a major year in the ai space. and that sort of lineup continues where we'll have the ceos of waymo, we'll have volvo group, we'll have panasonic, accenture, sirius xm and more really talking about advancements across the board. so don't miss the keynotes. and then of course, through kstc, you can find more information that's coming out around some of the announcements and other exhibitor info. it's going to be an exciting show. brian, i appreciate you making the time with us. brian comisky is senior director at the consumer technology association, which again runs ces. we'll be back in

community forward. good morning everyone. i'm scott mcgrew, a u.s. court of appeals says a law that requires the chinese company bytedance to sell its tiktok social network or face a ban here in america, can go into effect early next year. bytedance is appealing that decision to the u.s. supreme court, and bytedance has been pretty clear it's not going to se. but if it did, to whom would it sell? frank mccourt says he would buy it. he calls it a people's bid. a consortium of investors, though he will be adding quite a bit of money to the bid himself. mccourt is good at owning stuff, including the french football team marseille, and for a while the los angeles dodgers and dodger stadium. frank, i'll get to the why in just a second, but let's start with the price. i mean, what is let's say you bought it. what is a fair price for tiktok? yeah,
9:12 am
very, very hard to determine that without knowing what what bytedance is selling. and you know, we've circled about 20 billion thinks we think that's kind of order of magnitude. but of course this will depend on what exactly bytedance decides if they decide to sell it. and we'll have to get into a data room and really, you know, really fine tune all this. but i think that's order of magnitude the, the what we're looking at here. all right. so now let's get to the why why why do you want to buy tiktok. wel you know, i started project liberty five years ago to really, really reimagine and build a better upgraded internet, one where individuals own their and control their identity, their data and their relationships. and so we've been plugging along that technology is working. we have nearly a million and a half people using it now. we just had a recent summit in in washington, dc, where we announced four more apps coming
9:13 am
over. and we demonstrated interoperability and so on and so forth. and so we're we're moving forward and, and have been and then, you know, in march, i actually wrote a book put my point of view down in writing. and then in april, you know, this legislation happened, which was a, you know, a nice surprise. and we pounced on the opportunity. why? because if we can move 170 million users, 170 million americans over to a new, upgraded internet, well, we've just spun up an alternative to the mess we have right now. and then people can decide to continue with a surveillance based internet, or one where they're in charge of themselves. you know, our our data, our personal data is our virtual is our virtual being. you know, it's our personhood. so i think you and i andveryone else should be able to control how our data is used. yeah. you feel strongly about this and your project liberty is around the
9:14 am
protocols of how internet data moves back and forth. so in this case, you'd want the users, you'd want all their content, but you don't want the algorithm. but tiktok's algorithm is one of the things that makes it valuable. one of the things. but there's other things that make it valuable as well. not as valuable as with the algorithm, but the user base, the content, the brand. those are all valuable things, too. so where where we know we're not going to get the algorithm. china has made that very, very clear, which, by the way, limits the, the, the, the potential buyers because the legislation requires that this be that the user base be moved onto a clean american stack. and we've been building that stack for five years, coincidentally. i mean, if we hadn't been building a clean stack and had it up and running, we wouldn't be having this conversation now other than making it safer and, you know, maybe chinese spy proof, would you change anything
9:15 am
about the content on tiktok? because i'm going to say, sometimes when a billionaire buys a social network, he can screw it up. yeah, that's for sure. so that's why i don't want to. i say to people, this isn't about trusting me. this is about trusting themselves. people should should own their identity, control their identity, control their data, own their relationships, and decide how to permission its use and so on and so forth. i, i am adamantly against platforms that surveil, scrape people's data, aggregate them, and then put the control into into,ou know, a company's hands, whether it's a company in silicon valley or a chinese communist party. i mean, obviously there's a difference, right? one's a you know, china has has interests that may be adverse to the us, and that's the national security issue
9:16 am
we're talking about here. but in either case, and as i pointed out in, you know, our biggest fight, the book i wrote, this is really a battle for who owns each of us. are we going to be are we going to give up our citizenship, our personhood, our virtual being for free apps? i think it's a bad deal. i really think we need an internet, really, that optimizes for what our our ideology, our political ideology and our very the very basic, basic premise of america is individual rights, liberty, agency, choice, autonomy. we have technology that is anything, anything but that. and if i if i asked you to describe democracy, i don't think you'd say surveillance based, autocratic, centralized, exploitive. and so we we're we're we need technology that's in harmony with what we want to be as a country, in my opinion. how do you see this playing out? donald trump in that administration was when we originally heard of this idea of banning tiktok, the biden
9:17 am
administration and congress at the time ran with it. president elect trump has now said that he actually doesn't favor a ban on tiktok. where do you see this ending up? well, we don't favor a ban on tiktok either. that's the whole point of our people's bid for, you know, for tiktok, like president elect trump. we want to see the app continue. and what we've put forward here is a win win win. it satisfies china's objective not to not to give up the algorithm. it satisfies president elect trump's objective not to see it banned. and it satisfies the objective of the user base of tiktok who want to see it, want to see it continue as well. so we see this as a as a win for everyone. well, and that's why it leads to my last question is just i think there are you know, the folks in washington tend to be older. the folks in washington tend to be men. i think ere is a and i understand the risk that comes
9:18 am
from tiktok, that there is a vast underestimation of how important tiktok is to several generations of younger people. it would be if, even if it's a good reason to take to make the ban, it would be like taking television away. well, it's interesting survey that was done recently, and if you take gen z, the gen z was polled about tiktok and 43% they wish it had never been invented. and the reason is they know it's highly addictive. they know they spend a ton of time on it and kind of can't, can't get away from it. right. because that's that is the design. let's have a, a version of tiktok that 100% of the user base is excited about. fair enough. all right. well, frank mccourt, i wish you the best of luck. thanks for joining us this morning. frank mccourt, perhaps will be the next owner, along with a number of other people of tiktok. we'll be back

9:22 am
mine set to spruce, which is described as a motivational speaker. how do you. i mean, on a layman's term, how do you create the voice, including santa? do you describe to ai what you think santa sounds like and then it tries it? yeah, we actually contract with real voice actors. we go through a whole process to find these people. we're looking for people with voices that you could listen to for a long time, with depth of emotion and tone. and then we take recordings from those actors, and we use them to train our models to speak like them. and then, of course, there's personality to it as well. i mean, santa sounds like santa, and it's fun for kids. i assume it is. it is a safe thing for children to use. so chatgpt in general is a 13 and up product. i really like santa in particular as a product for parents. i myself am a parent of a four year old. i find it really useful for inspiring christmas stories, even christmas jokes. and i also
9:23 am
think santa is really useful for new users. you know, if you've never used chatgpt before, santa is a great way to get started. just feel free to like, jump in and ask him your questions about santa in general, or even about, you know, christmas cocktail if you're throwing a party. okay, so this is full chatgpt with a santa voice and best used with apparent supervision. that's right. okay, now i'm sure you guys have thought of this. what happens if you ask santa if santa is real? you know, santa actually handles these questions pretty well. somebody else asked me, what happens if you tell santa what you want for christmas? he generally leans on, you know, some reference to, you know, santa as a magical person. but my best advice is to just jump in and give it a try. i think you'll find it highly delightful. that's cool. and of course, it's a real flex for parents because, you know, they can get santa on the phone. i mean, how cool of a dad am i? how cool of a mom are you? if we
9:24 am
can actually literally talk to santa, i think we're pretty cool. yeah, well, jackie, shannon, i think it's just an outstanding little fun program. i so enjoy using chatgpt. thank you for joining us this morning, jackie. you bet. jackie. shannon with open ai as we leave you here, is santa telling the story of the night before christmas, millennial style. hey santa, can you tell me the story of the night before christmas? but say it like gen z. ho ho ho ho. all right, let's try this. twas the night before christmas. and the vibes were calm. not a creature was stirring. not even your mom. the stockings were hung. all fam tucked in tight. while dreams of viral vids danced through the night. when out o the lawn. there was major commotion. i yeeted from bed to check out the
