games either sewn up or a somewhat comfortable lead in the fourth quarter where they gave the lead back. and then you have to throw the special teams unit in there. the big plays that they gave up against the la rams in the first game, the multiple mis kicks from moody to finish games. yeah, they had a ton of different issues on the defensive side of the ball. it has been some play calling. the la rams took advantage of the 49ers not using calls in their man coverage and picking guys. and then on offense, they had some issues with the four week blitz earlier in the season where they couldn't pick it up and they couldn't finish games, so it's been everything at every level and every side of the ball. time for our red zone drive of the game. it's brought to you by toyota toyotas red zone drive of the game. beginning of the fourth quarter. niners are trailing 19 to 10 and purdy is going to do some things. first, he's going to find deebo deebo dante maybe not having a great season, but but had a pretty good game today. he looked extremely motivated. and
9:01 pm
this is the game that you expected deebo samuel to come out and bounce back with. and then purdy he's going to run it now. maybe i'll pass it. and he finds kittle for a nice play. kittle has been his most reliable pass catcher all year long. he's the only all-pro on this team. and then saubert. not everyone knows who this guy is, but he's in the end zone. that made it 1917. i guess my question, dante, is do you give him credit for not giving up? absosolutely. this is a time in the season and i played in buffalo five years. we never made the playoffs. we didn't expect to win games. so i played in a lot of these games. that didn't really mean much to really the, the, the outside people, but it means a lot for the players because that tape is their resume. and all of those players out there are independent contractors, so they play well. they just didn't make enough plays. they had too many penalties, they gave up too many rushing yards and they didn't finish. you always hear this thing too, that if you don't play 100%, you're more likely to get hurt. absolutely. is that true? absolutely. which is why i played 11 years and had zero

the sports sunday presented by feldman. all right, a downve season, maybe by brock purdy. maybe not. last season was exceptional. maybe, you know, as you documented earlier in the show, all those injuries, would you have called this a down season? he missed one game and he didn't have offensive weapons almost the entire season. i would say that it's been a down season, but he did the best that he could, especially when you don't have your left tackle, your number one pass receiver in downfield threat and brandon aiyuk, they had to do some some
9:05 pm
patchwork things to the offensive line for the majority of the season. but brock purdy gets the 49ers the best opportunity to win. there's been points this season where he looked like the mvp versus chicago, and i believe it was a game earlier this season where he came out the gate, let him down to two consecutive scores, and then there's been games like the buffalo bills game and the game last week versus the la rams, where he turned the football over late and they couldn't really get the consistent type of playmaking and consistency that we're accustomed to seeing on this offense. so i would say that brock purdy at times looked like he pressed too much not having his his weapons out there. but for the most part, brock purdy is everything that this football team needs. he just needs players around him healthy and performing up to the level that they're expecting. what jumps out from last year's comparison is the 31 touchdowns versus only 17 this year. last season, he did lead the nfl in yards per catch. he led the nfl in passer

rating and he was in the mvp conversation. he finished in fourth. t that bar was so high.e started so high never losing a regular season game. it was so high that i think no matter what happened this year, it might have come down. and then you add to the fact that mccaffrey was out, trent williams was out, aiyuk was out for the whole season. i mean, it would have been almost impossible to match that success from a year ago. it would have been very difficult. and when you think about the solidarity that they had on the offensive line last year, they really had injuries. they had consistency there. they had christian mccaffrey, who was able to create a lot of explosive plays and make the game easier for the guys around him, because they had to allocate so many guys to the run. and the 49ers offense was different last year. a lot of play action passes, a lot of pop passes. not this year. it was more so drop back pass. teams weren't really respecting the run game, and they were really relying on brock purdy to look guys off and fit the ball into a lot of tight windows. and then when brandon aiyuk goes down and
9:07 pm
they can't separate from man coverage, it makes it even more difficult. whihich is w we saw him scramble around and improvise a lot more this year. so yeah, brock purdy took a lot of the onus on his shoulders this year. time for our must-see moment. it's brought to you by zenni. zenni is the official eyewear of the san francisco 49ers. second quarter 49ers are trailing three nothing and purdy is going to find number one, deebo samuel. now, deebo samuel could have caught this and maybe gone down at the 8 or 7 or 5 or 4. no, he's going all the way into the end zone for a touchdown. deebo has been criticized for not having a good season. is that criticism? is that criticism accurate? and today was one of his better games? no. the criticism has definitely been warranted for deebo samuel, a guy who is an all pro player, who is an anomaly in what he does, being able to run the football and create explosives, catch the football underneath and run through tackles like we saw in that example there. he hasn't
9:08 pm
really done that for the majority of this season, and he had his opportunities, and he brought a lot of the criticism on himself by speaking out i the media, by lashing out at jake moody. and then last week, you drop a touchdown pass to really keep yourself in the playoff race. so today he came out and he he performed as if his job is on the line, as if he has to prove himself all over again. so this was a good start. i like to see it again versus detroit arizona. and then i want deebo samuel to have a good offseason and the 49ers will bring him back because as you saw today, he still has the capabilities to be a home run hitter. he does. he went out on social media when some of that criticism was coming at him and said, no, they're not giving me the ball enough yet. and he misspoke. they were trying to get him the football, but the players around him and the type of plays they were in, situations they were putting them in, the players weren't executing, so he didn't throw the playerers under the bus. he should have just said nothing and went back to work, came out and had a good game versus the

9:28 pm
tore through a giant pile of scrap metal at this west oakland metal recycling yard in the summer of 2023, and it wasn't the first. it was the fourth. over the years, at the plant formerly known as schnitzer steel, we always ask, well, how is it a giant pile of metal catches fire? west oakland resident and environmentalist brian beveridge lives near the radius recycling plant. he co-founded the west oakland environmental indicators project to track pollution in the industrial area. it's a $3 billion company. they should actually know what the heck's going on in a pile of scrap metal. prosecutors say that in the days before the fire radius kept taking in wrecked cars that can contain hazardous materials even after its shredder broke down and just stored the cars in a remote, unprotected area where the fire started. and despite being told to preserve burn remains flagged as evidence. managers ordered the material
9:29 pm
shredded, according to the grand jury indictment. using the public records act, we obtained what may prove to be a key piece of evidence. it shows an explosion that prosecutors say indicates hazardous materials, possibly magnesium, used in engine blocks, were being kept in a pile designed for harmless scrap metal. we never saw anything explode like that. one firefighter told the grand jury, and kruse testified they saw ten explosions that day, but a radius official testified the blast was due to a reaction of non-hazardous metals being doused with water. nobody seems to have a solution to fires. beveridge, whose group has long been critical of the plant, says if prosecutors are right about hazardous materials being kept in an unprotected area when the shredder broke down, this is a demonstration of their priorities. process profits are
9:30 pm
more important than toxic fires. radius attorney issued a statement denying it stores or treats hazardous materials at the yard. we are fully confident that the company's actions will be proven to a prioritized public safety and compliance with the law, while acknowledging shredding remains of the fire. the statement says it was done as a safety precaution and only after authorities had the opportunity to examine and test the material. although the indictments were unsealed in july, company officials have not yet formally entered pleas to the felony and misdemeanor allegations. jaxon van derbeken nbc, bay area news. if you have a story for our investigative unit, cal this number 888996 tips or visit our website nbcbayarea.com. slash investigations. those rumors of people leaving california in an exodus. that's true. at the same time, the population of the
