so we're watching these big waves coming off the coast. it's a high surf warning that continues through tomorrow, and most of the bay area beaches means that some of the waves could top 30ft, and treacherous conditions at mavericks, some of the waves are reaching 40ft. we're going to take you to pacifica in our next half hour, but take a look at what's driving those big waves along the coastline. more storm systems that have developed off the coast. and we have another one that's going to come in, and a lot of the coastline is going to deal with those very turbulent and dangerous waves throughout today. and even though we're not seeing a lot in the way of rain or big weather that could impact your day, we're going to see some scattered showers coming in, mainly for the north bay going into this afternoon. and as we go into the evening, it's going to be very hit or miss, but a wave of some more widespread and heavy rain will develop by this time tomorrow morning, and we're going to see some times of heavy rain. also, that high surf

warning may cause some flooding, not because of the rain, but because of some of the coastal areas that may be eroding under those big dangerous waves that we will be tracking goingng into tomorrow. but overall, we are going to see wave after wave of rain as we go through the week, the next one coming in the day after christmas. so i'll be tracking all of that for you. and there is a great weather resource for you as the storm rolls in. check out our free nbc bay area app. you can scan the qr code on your screen to download it and get access to stormranger scans and weather alert, and it works wherever you're heading or traveling. and mike, speakin of traveling, how are the roads looking? a lighter volume overall, as kira talked about, different times of the day are going to see a lot heavier traffic like midday. definitely watch that cross town right now it's the conditions we warned about the mist, the drizzle, the rain in some cases around the bay slicker roadways. we had a crash at the bay bridge. there was a traffic break coming in from the maze, but now everything looks like it's cleared from the incident report. all lanes at the toll plaza are clear. once again,

5:05 am
talked to all 11 supervisors and supervisor elects, and i've told them my plans to tackle this drug crisis that we have on our streets. we're going to declare that on day one of my administration, and we have a lot of work to do. i was down on sixth street with sfpd last sunday, walking and trying to understand what it's going to take to combat these open air drug markets. and whatever people say, we have a job to do. we have to get results for the people of san francisco, and that's what we're going to do. and speaking to the people of san francisco, as you're entering leadership in san francisco, former president donald trump is reentering the white house as the president. and i know he is promising to carry out mass deportations across the u.s. and with san francisco being a sanctuary city, what's your message to immigrants living or even working in the city? i tell people that first off, we were

elected to get a mandate to deliver results for the people of san francisco, and i will stand by our immigrant community. i'll stand by our lgbtq community. they have an ally in me. we are a sanctuary city. we're actually a sanctuary state, and nothing is going to change in the coming weeks and months. about that is our work or talks with the governor's office about just how to handle anything in particular. listen, the governor, our city attorney, the attorney general have actually been through this before. so they are preparing. they are keeping me apprized of how they are preparing the city and state. but let me just be clear to the people of san francisco, we have a mandate to get results for the people of san francisco, not to start getting into national politics, but to make sure that we deliver clean and safe streets, that we tackle this behavioral health and drug crisis on our streets, and make sure that every dollar
5:07 am
that we spend is we have to remind ourselves that is the taxpayers money and they deserve to get results. and so my focus and my administration's focus is going to be on delivering for san francisco, the mayor elect, lori, and i discuss much more, including selecting some big names from the tech industry for his team. also, the best response to companies leaving the city. you can watch that full story on our streaming newscast. that's coming up for you at 8:00 this morning. you can also go online at nbcbayarea.com or wherever you stream. happening today, the man accused of killing the ceo of unitedhealthcare, brian thompson, is due in court. luigi mangione is currently awaiting arraignment in new york on murder and other charges. today's proceedings come after he waived his right to an extradition hearing from pennsylvania last week. mangione faces 11 counts in connection to the december 4th shooting death of thompson. he also faces

we are taking a look at storm ranger, where we're not seeing a lot of widespread or even heavy rain. so it's mainly some spotty light showers. as we go into the afternoon, there will be a chance of rain, but mainly some peeks of sunshine. and this next storm system coming in will affect us overnight into tomorrow. but take a look at the raindrops on the camera lens looking at walnut creek. so it is a very soggy commute and at times we've seen some dense fog developing and moving around the bay area. temperatures are in the mid 50s right now. it is a milder start and will be slow to warm as we are going to see a lot of clouds throughout the morning. but as we take a look at the range and temperatures from clear lake in the upper 50s to the possibility of reaching into the low 70s for san jose, there will be some spots that are going to be much nicer for the afternoon and also more comfortable than others, so we'll be watching that. i'll time out the rain for you coming up in a few minutes, but mike now has a look at where you can find some lower gas prices. yeah, and the lowest is no longer livermore. the streak is

5:22 am
it's going to create some times of some, as we mentioned, some big waves creating some flooding conditions near the coastline. the high surf warning in effect through tomorrow and then showers coming in kind of spotty initially, but then picking up later on tonight into early tomorrow. as far as the temperatures today, it will be a cool one with low 60s in the north bay, 66 will be the high today in oakland and upper 60s, even possibly low 70s for san jose. so the south bay will have the warmest temperatures, and then tomorrow it cools off. once that storm system moves through, it also will bring in some cooler air, and then we'll only make it into the 50s on wednesday. so we're enjoying the milder weather for now, but it does feel very humid and we are going to see some times of rain today, mainly in the north bay. here's a timeline of the rain affecting us tomorrow morning, as we take a look at 4:00 in the morning. really heavy rain and possibly even some thunderstorms with small hail. once that clears out tomorrow afternoon.
5:23 am
wednesday is dry, but then the next storm system comes in on thursday, so we're going to see a lot of rain throughout the week, at least with this first round of rain, it's anywhere from about a half to three quarters of an inch of rain for most of the bay area, but there will be a lot more in the way as we wrap up the year, we are going to see possibly 1 to 2, maybe even three inches of rainfall and the sierra is going to get some snow. as we've mentioned before, it looks like christmas is dry, but that a break in the rain doesn't last long because going into the rest of the week, as well as the weekend, there will be one storm after the next. if you're going to the sierra ahead of christmas, just be mindful that you do need to plan ahead. bring those tire chains. we could see about 5 to 10in of snow there and then for the weekend. in total, we could see about two feet possibly in some of those higher elevations. so that's going to be nice to see going through the forecast over the next several days. lots of breaks in the rain as well as

lots of heavy rain. so we're going to go back and forth from one kind of weather condition to the next. so that's why it's so important to have the nbc bay area app so that you can get those alerts as the weather changes minute by minute. and then looking at what we can expect in san francisco, kind of the same temperatures, as well as the high surf warning that will affect parts of the coastline for today. and mike, we're seeing that fog and mist out there affecting the commute. yeah. so the lighter traffic is the theme for the traffic for the morning commute. but the conditions are not saying you should you should relax at all. you should watch out as go as fast as the conditions allow. so if it is slick, if it's tough to see like this, where it's highlighted with the yellow throughout this portion of highway 101 in the north bay, we just took a look at san rafael right here. then slow those speeds down even though you can go the speed limit. maybe the conditions are not such that you should highway 4 moving. well, there's some dense fog. watch out tough the area of thehr

coastline today, all of this being driven by this storm system that's approaching the bay area, and all the clouds that we can see that are reaching closer to us will eventually bring us some rain and have a bigger impact overnight. but today, we're already seeing those waves piling up near the coastline. the green shows that where we have the coastal flood warning, as well as the high surf warning, and so we are now seeing those waves at about 12 to 14ft, but may possibly reach 30 to maybe even 40ft at mavericks. and some of those places where we do typically have some of those bigger waves as we go throughout today, it's going to be cloudy as well as some mild temperatures. but then later on tonight, as the storm system comes in into early tomorrow morning, it may also cause some thunderstorms and some very dangerous conditions, not only near the coast, but as well for the inland areas where we may see some thunderstorms. so now let's head out to today in the bay's bob redell, who's live at the pier in pacifica. bob, what are you seeing there?
5:34 am
the waves aren't as big as they're predicted to be. 30 to 40ft, at least not yet. but we're looking at if you can see here in the early morning darkness, waves that are about ten feet, this is pretty normal. what we'd see when we have these high surf advisories, warnings here in pacifica, where as you look to the right, occasionally you're seeing it breach the seawall there and go over into the street. there are people who live there. they know that this happens on a regular basis. that's why they put shields up in front of their yard to keep the flooding. and over here to the left, you can see the gates to the pier are still shut down. the sheriff's office has not opened them. here's a gentleman who's out here. i just spoke to him off camera briefly. he's local. he's out here taking video. i also spoke with a crab fisherman who was out here early this morning. he actually left, went north to san francisco to try to get crab because again, the pier isn't open because of these high surf conditions. so again, the national weather service, as kari is mentioning, is predicting waves anywhere from 30 to 35ft up to 40ft in
5:35 am
places like mavericks and half moon bay, which of course is a famous surfing spot. the point is that these are very dangerous conditions. obviously you do not want to go in the water. and on the flip side, a flip side, these waves are a sight to see, which is why many people drove out to the coastline this weekend. again, the waves can be dangerous even if you're staying on shore. stay off any jetties where waves can crash and wash you into the water. and just be aware of the ocean and what's coming your way. the waves look a bit turbulent also with not not as big as i've seen it, but still pretty big. i mean, all up the coast has been huge today, so it's been fun to watch. as kari mentioned, national weather service has warned coastal communities about possible flooding. a reminder not to drive through standing water. these warnings are expected to stay in effect at least until around midday tomorrow. and again, as that lady you just heard saying, these are fun to watch. whoa, it is a spectacle when you when you come out here and you're obviously we're up
5:36 am
here on the stub end of the pier where it is safe. and it's wonderful to see just to be able to be by the ocean and to see these waves coming in. as long as no one is getting hurt. it's a spectacle for sure. reporting live here in pacifica, bob redell today in the bay. and good for our viewers to stay safe and just watch it on tv. bob, thanks. a great weather resource for you. as the storm rolls in is our free nbc bay area app. you can scan that qr code on your screen, download it for free, and then you'll get access to our storm ranger scans, our weather alerts. it works whether you're here or traveling. 535 for you this morning. and as we look ahead to the new year, perhaps no one has more resolutions than mayor elect of san francisco. from taking on the battle against open air drug markets to the economy and housing. today in the bay's kris sanchez joining us live this morning in san francisco with more on what danielle laura has planned. kris. well, hi there marcus. i know that you've also talked with mayor elect daniel lurie, and he says that his

administration is going to reflect the diversity of san francisco, and that means pulling in people to his administration from all backgrounds, including business. he is staffing his team with several big names in tech, including former twitter executive ned siegel and openai ceo sam altman. the message he wants to send is that san francisco is open for business, which will require addressing open air drug markets and crime. we have to revive our tourism. we have to revive our downtown, and that's going to require us making sure that we get conferences back to san francisco, that we get business back, because once we get business back, our small businesses can start to thrive and we can grow our economy. now, of course, bringing in tourists is one thing, but for the people who live in san francisco, housing is a major issue, a critical one for people trying to make it in the bay.

mayor elect lurie says that he is reaching out to labor and community groups to get more middle income housing built, and he says he has a lot to prove. we ask so much of our taxpayers and our residents, and yet we're not delivering. and we do have a crisis of affordability. and so we are going to work with different departments, work with the public and private sector to make sure that we get more housing built. i'm working with the planning department on that as well, and that is key to our economic recovery. mayor elect lurie points to the election results he says are a mandate that he got the vote of confidence from the people of san francisco. he takes office on january 8th in san francisco. all right. big task ahead, chris. thank you. well, i did go in depth with mayor elect on what he planned to do about the drug crisis, as well as

and drizzle that we've been showing on many of our cameras. here's emeryville, the best view we've had all morning from our rooftop camera, looking down toward the tail lights, making their way around the berkeley curve toward the bay bridge toll plaza, where we continue with light traffic volume on friday. of course, it was friday, but we didn't see metering lights on until 6 a.m. and no backup form until 15 minutes after that. we're looking over here to light, but with slick roadways, so do use caution through the area. we already had one crash that cleared about 430 in the morning, and now a little bit of a build getting into the city on that side, the western side of our map, we're looking at the fog through san francisco and north all the way up through novato and continuing toward petaluma. we have now creeping across the delta highway for the fog blending in over here for contra costa county. so keep that in mind. but no slowing shows up on highway four. highway 37 just barely shows any brake tapping right now. coming out of vallejo for the westbound commute. walnut creek interchange all clear. so is the maze looking ahead toward the city? of course, we will have the warriors playing at chase center tonight, so we're looking at possibilities of more crowds
5:43 am
coming in on the 280 extension. oftentimes after school's out for the year, we have more families who are in town able to get there. so there may be some more cars. watch for that. we're looking anywhere south of there. pretty smooth drive, although i've seen patches of fog creeping in toward our palo alto camera, undoubtedly through oakland as well as it was earlier, but no problems. notice the green sensors throughout. there's still one crash showing up on 880 the onramp. at first, the note highway nine. there's no more construction, no more traffic control for the rest of the year. they want to make sure that's open for everyone to get around the area. and i think maybe give some caltrans workers a break. back over to you. all right, mike, thanks. 542 right now there are more and more electric vehicles on california's roads, but it still seems like drivers are fighting to find those open chargers. we're always playing musical charger at home to see you know who get the charge first. up next going to break down the new push to bring more power to the golden state. plus giving santa claus a helping hand. the way these bay area police officers

it is. 546 here's a live look outside at christmas in the park in san jose. if you're going out today, it will be cloudy with some peeks of sunshine by late morning into the afternoon, and temperatures will feel very comfortable, so you'll be able to take off the heavier coat and take some nice pictures out
5:47 am
there by the tree. we are going to take a look at rain coming back and the timeline coming up in a few minutes. yeah, this is the picturesque little glow for these lights. heading southbound on 880 past the coliseum. traffic moves smoothly in both directions, in fact, but you can see the glow for those headlights. little mist kicking up off the ground in some places. watch for that fog impact as well, especially throughout the north bay, but lighter traffic volume dominates, so we'll check where there's slowing. there's a bit of it out there this morning coming up. all right. mike and kerry. thanks. well, there is a new push to make it easier for drivers with electric vehicles. scott mcgrew joins us with a look at the plan set to bring more chargers to california as the incentive to buy an ev could come to an end come next year. good morning. earlier this month, the california energy commission approved new money to build more charging stations for electric cars. that will be welcome news to ev drivers. the washington post calculates, back in 2016, there was one public
5:48 am
charger for every seven electric cars. that number is now one charger for every 20 cars today. i spoke about the issue with southern california electric car maker steve fambro. steve talked to me about chargers. i know you're working on a solar augmented car, but i have a ford mach-e. a lot of our viewers have tesla, so we're circling the same charger trying to get, you know, a charge, a public charge. there just simply aren't enough of these chargers. you know, it's a really good point. i actually my family, we have three electric vehicles and we only have two chargers. and so we're always playing musical charger at home to see you know who gets the charge first. but i think a lot of people that are that are homeowners and also ev owners have the privilege of charging at home. so we don't have to go to a charger. we don't he to rely on an external network unless we're traveling. now you're traveling on a holiday. that's when you really see the problem. you'll have a line waiting for 30 minutes to an hour, you know, to
5:49 am
get to a charger. so i think in removing the friction for long distance travel, we need more chargers. absolutely. incoming president trump has indicated he'll try to end the $7,500 tax credit for electric car purchases. that's a blow to companies like yours, isn't it? i mean, because it was an incentive to buy a car that, you know, let's face it, it's going to cost more. i think we have to question either all subsidies or be more equitable with them. for example, we spend about $750 billion a year as a country to subsidize the free flow of oil exploration, shipping, ports and the defense of it around the world. that's almost $1 trillion just to subsidize oil. we can make the same argument and say, let's not subsidize oil either, and let's let the cost be the true cost, and then we'll see which one wins. governor newsom has talked about trying to increase california's rebate for electric cars to 7500. and to be clear, a rebate and a federal tax credit are not the same
5:50 am
thing. in many ways, rebates are better. so that would be very valuable to you if that gets passed. absolutely. i mean, the governor and also the air resources board under his leadership, have consistently led the nation in doing the right thing. and we do apprececiate h leadership on all things electric. now, you're speaking to me from the factory floor. last question for you is when is it that i'm going to say, oh, there goes an altera down the street and it'll be fairly common. well, you're going to see the first production. aptera is actually driving around las vegas at ces january 7th through the 10th. so we're going to be there. we've got a great booth outside and we're going to be doing riding drives around there. so you're going to see production out there. but sometime in 2025, the first customer will get the first aptera. steve fambro from car maker aptera. costco says it's working with electrify america to build its first charging station at its pleasanton location. costco will set the price on electricity. we don't know what that is yet, but costco tends to give members a
5:51 am
break on gas prices, so we'll hope for a break on electric charging as well. back to you. wow. interesting. all right. scott, thanks. well, there will be no christmas miracle for 49ers fans, at least when it comes to the team making the playoffs. whatever. faint 1% postseason hopes, the niners still had evaporated even before they took to the field yesterday in miami. that's because washington won in the early window. gotta hand it to the niners though. they did play out the string losing to miami 29 to 17. now back here locally to antioch police. they are making this christmas a special one for a family that was hit by thieves yesterday. officers brought them a load of gifts and holiday cheer. of course, this after a family hit a rough patch. first the mother lost her job. and then more recently, burglars stole all of the presents that she purchased for her family and young daughter. one of the officers who responded to her
5:52 am
initial burglary call organized a visit, and they posted these shots on social media. community members pitched in to help. oh, that is wonderful. the community coming together. oh my gosh. beautiful, beautiful. we wish it didn't happen in the first place, but what a gift that antioch police came to their rescue. all right, we'll get to the traffic in a bit with mike. but first, kari is here with the forecast, and you are going to show us something that's taken our newsroom kind of buzzing, right? are you going to show the volcano there or. no, it's just on the screen. yeah. we're just looking at a little. we're looking at it, we're looking at it. but there it is. that's what we're looking at. it's been just as you you said, mesmerizing. yeah, that's really cool. it's the live stream that we see on the usgs website in hawaii. and so that's where we're seeing the glow this morning online. all right. let's talk about what's lighting up our radar here across the bay area a look at storm ranger where we are seeing
5:53 am
some very spotty showers moving through. ovell, it's been a drier morning compared to yesterday and what we had over the weekend. another round of rain is going to come in as we are seeing this storm system approachining, and we are also going to see that rain arriving later on tonight and out ahead of that. it's causing some dangerous waves near the coast. we have a high surf warning. in effect, we don't often get that kind of level of a warning, and it's the magnitude of the waves that we're expecting that's prompting that. and it may also cause some flooding near the coastline. so never turn your back to the water. and if you are going to the coast, stay well away from the coastline. the rain picks up again late tonight into tomorrow, but as of now the commute is dry, at least through the tri-valley. we're seeing some clear visibility and temperatures are in the mid 50s, but it will be a very slow climb to reach our high temperature in the 60s for this afternoon. and as we go hour by hour with our rain forecast, we will start to see some spotty rain, mainly in
5:54 am
the north bay today and then the heavier stuff coming through early tomorrow morning right at about this time. this could really affect your drive, getting to work, or even just trying to get some of those last minute presents we are going to see throughout the morning some heavy rain and possibly even some thunderstorms moving through, as this system will be in and out of here fairly quickly. it does dry out tomorrow afternoon as well as christmas eve, and then we'll also see some additional rain after that. so with this quick round of rain that we'll see between tonight and early tomorrow, we could see anywhere from about a half to possibly three quarters of an inch of rainfall. some of the higher rainfall totals will be near the coast, as well as in parts of the north bay. and then looking at what's ahead for the rest of the week. a lot more rain coming in and that will possibly affect some holiday travel. this next storm system coming in will once again hit us early tomorrow, and then quickly moving out of here to give us a dry christmas. but then right after that, the next storm system comes in and it's
5:55 am
going to be wave after wave of rain and sierra snow into the weekend, as well as welcoming in the new year. so we're going to stay in this active weather pattern, looking at rain chances in the forecast. and it's so important to have the nbc bay area app or something to give you alerts that we're going to see the weather changing minute by minute here. and that will actually give you a heads up if there is some rain moving into where you are. as we look at the rest of the forecast, it will be cool. highs in the upper 50s low 60s for san francisco and mike, as of now, there's no backup at the bay bridge. yeah, there's a little mist and drizzle out there. so that's the conditions we're worried about because cars can, with lighter traffic, go closer to the speed limit, but as low as slow it down a bit if you need more traction or more stopping distance. that may be the case in many parts around the bay. look at the green dominating our maps. the non green. there's a little bit of yellow right here for a little bit of slowing around. mare island for west 37. and then this highlighted yellow here as well as over here in contra costa county. that's where the
5:56 am
visibility again as you've seen over the last few weeks the fog may be a factor. the mist and drizzle dominate though in other areas despite the yellow not being there. it's creeping down through daly city and down along the coast through half moon bay. traditional spots where we would see the fog. so they are there. no major problems. a look at those speeds. they're looking great right now. we're looking over toward one incident reported west 580 approaching hopyard. there's a little more slowing than i saw last couple of minutes. i don't see it on this camera right here. it may be just past the camera, just outside our view. no injuries reported for this crash. we'll check on lanes coming up. back to you. thanks, mike. well, happening now, south bay. authorities have still not identified three people who died in two separate crashes early yesterday in morgan hill. the first crash happened at around 3 a.m. this is near third street and monterey road. in that case, the driver died in a solo rollover crash. about six hours later, a speeding driver lost control and crossed the median on monterey road near middle avenue, crashing head on with an
