coast, satellites capturing sweeping snow across nearly all of the northeast. since friday travelers faced 26,000 flight delays and cancellations. >> it got cancelled and i actually just got the first flight back home in the morning. >> reporter: the tsa says it is expecting to screen some 40 million flyers between theun up to christmas and trip home new year's eve, up 6.2% from 2023. >> it is really crowded in here with a lot of people. >> reporter: some desperate to get home for the holidays, giving trains a try, but critical amtrak routes in the northeast were delayed or cancelled due to downed power lines blocking tracks and unavailable equipment. new york's penn station, snaking lines on sunday. >> really, the traffic on the trains. >> reporter: the vast majority of americans heading to holiday celebrations by car. treacherous driving conditions blamed for this crash outside boston that took down utility

lines, but one bright spot for many motorists, gas prices hovering around $3 a gallon nationwide. now with another round of frigid winter weather on the way, travelers hoping mother nature won't deliver more holiday headaches. we will see some of the heaviest traffic on roadways like this this afternoon, especially in major metropolitan areas like new york city, boston, seattle, washington, d.c. aaa says we could see travel times increase by some 30% and, guys, that's without factoring in the potential for winter weather. >> wow, 9 degrees there in secaucus. emilie ikeda, thank you. let's bring in dylan. how cold is it? >> we're not talking about a windchill in the northeast that's brutally cold. it is actually calm in the northeast with the clear skies. we have a light snow falling across michigan through northern wisconsin. we have snow moving through the rockies and the higher elevations if you are crossing the mountain passes is where you

will see some of the tough travel. record warmth in the southwest. you guys have it just fine, 60s and 70s there, but bursts of snow through the day across the great lakes region, and then in the northeast it is just cold and still a little icy from temperatures in the mid 20s for high temperatures today. then we look at the airports. again, we are fine on the east coast. chicago should see minor delays with the snow. detroit would be the best chance of seeing long-term delays because of the wetter weather and snowier weather that way. in the midwest and new england, slick roads because of the icing that could be there because of the temperatures as cold as they are. on christmas eve we are looking for spotty rain showers across the plains, heavy snow out west. slick travel across new england with slight snow moving in tomorrow. at the airports the biggest trouble will be most likely in boston where we will see the light snow, but even in san francisco and l.a. where we could see rain tomorrow. >> all right.

see you in a little bit. the man accused of killing the ceo of unitedhealthcare is set to go before a judge. luigi mangione will make his first appearance in a new york state court. stephanie gosk joins us with what to expect. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. luigi mangione faces 11 charges, three for murder and two acts of terror. in court today will be his first formal opportunity to answer those charges. luigi mangione will make his first appearance in a new york state court today where he will be arraigned on 11 criminal charges in the killing of unitedhealthcare ceo brian thompson on december 4th. >> the judge will go over issues like bail, which he won't get, and his right to counsel, which he already has. he also will take his plea which almost certainly will be a not guilty plea. >> reporter: among the state charges in new york, murder in

first and second degree and one count of terrorism. in a parallel case he is facing four federal charges including murder through the use of a firearm which has a maximum possible sentence of death penalty. the 26-year-old appeared in court last week pleading not guilty to the charges. this after he waived his right to a an extradition hearing in pennsylvania before being immediately transferred by plane and helicopter to new york. now he is held in the same jail where hip-hop mogul sean "diddy" combs is awaiting crime. >> brooklyn has faced criticism over understaffing, violence and the general conditions. >> reporter: the conditions at the jail have gotten so harsh some judges have refused to send people there. over the weekend mangione becoming a punch line on "saturday night live." >> luigi mangione drops. yeah, yeah.

>> thank you for having me. >> thank you. as you know, diplomats on the ground there including the special envoy for hostages in syria. there's some reports they found some files, they may have found one of the cells where your son had been held at some point. what have you heard from officials on the ground in syria? >> so we are working with hostage aid worldwide and they have been on the ground pretty much for as soon as they could think about getting there. so there have been a lot of opening of the prisons. they've, of course, freed a lot of people, which makes me very happy to see families reunited. there are so many prisons and then there's also -- they are really meticulous about the files and filing and the foreign on the people in the prisons. so it is a lot of work right now.

>> mrs. tice, the u.s. officials who have been there over the last few days including the special envoy, have you heard anything from them that gives you hope? >> well, i know that they were on tv yesterday morning and they shared some information that i hadn't heard before, but they haven't talked to me directly. >> do you find that frustrtrati? >> somewhat, definitely. >> has there been a reason given why there hasn't been more communication? >> no, i don't know. >> you recently sent a letter to russia's president, vladimir putin. you got a very public response from vladimir putin. how surprised were you by that response and what do you make of it? >> well, i am just really thrilled because i had asked him to mention austin and he did that, and i know that our .

but as far as bringing austin home, i do think that our government can work with the russian government. and as we know, bashar al-assad is in russia now, so that puts him right in a place where putin can talk to him directly. so i just am really -- i'm really glad at the very positive response that vladimir putin gave. >> what led you to write that letter to president putin? >> being austin's mom, just turning over every rock, just trying to figure out what can i do next, what more can i do, what can i do that's really different, what have i not done before. until i have him in my arms i am just going to be really focused on that and really thinking about what can i do for my son to bring him home.

period, and today will be busy at bay area airports. it follows a busy weekend. fortunately, even with the weather, there were few cancellations. airlines do expect the busiest days still lie ahead after christmas and before new year's day. on the roads, meanwhile, triple a predicts a record 119 million people will drive more than 50 miles over the ten days leading up to new year's day on bob redell. we're here on the pier in pacifica, where the national weather service has issued warnings not only for high surf, which you can see right here. we've got waves that are 10 to 12ft, but also warning for coastal flooding. it is possible these waves could grow, could double in size 20 to 26ft, up to 40ft in mavericks. a popular surfing spot, of course. and the warning, of course, means do not try to go in the water. and if you see standing water or there's coastal flooding, don't try to drive through it. right. and even though the waves are impressive, try not to go to the

45-minute cut-off before departure time to check your bags for domestic flights. as teams get the bags already in the belly of the plane off and get new ones on. of all of the passengers that fly with american, about a third of all of these bags in some way touch dfw on a given day which explains why there are literally thousands of people on the front lines making sure you bags get where they need to go. >> we are seeing some of the best performance we have seen in a very, very long time in this industry. numbers american airlines is juggling this holiday season, from the 320,000 bags in their system every day to the 23.6 million cans of coke and the 6.6 million bags of pretzels. even the 10.6 million biscoff cookies. but the number one priority remains getting you, your family and luggage through the maze that is the high-octane season with the knowledge all of these

found that thieves stole some $12 billion worth of packages over the last year. our senior consumer investigative correspondent vicky nguyen shows us how some police departments are fighting back. >> porch pirates are the worst, right? >> yes. >> especially this time of year. good morning to you. yonkers, new york, is part of a growing number of police departments now using decoy packages to catch the holiday thieves. yonkers started the program in 2019, but with a record number of online sales and package deliveries this year they're taken a more aggressive approach. >> hey! >> this holiday season these are the grinches to watch for. thieves caught on camera stealing packages in broad daylight. it is happening here in a suburb of new york city, yonkers. >> the items that they usually steal will be just about anything. >> lieutenant fred cazotta is one of the officers cracking down on holiday thefts. >> they will target whatever

good morning. it is 856 a marcus washington right now is crunch time in what's expected to be a record setting holiday travel period and today expected to be jam packed again with bay area airports. this follows a busy weekend. fortunately, there were few cancellations, but airports expect the busiest days are still ahead right now after christmas and just before the new year. the total number of fliers over the holiday this year expected to hit more than 6% higher than it was last year. on the roads, meanwhile, triple a, forecasting a record 119 million people, will drive 50 plus miles over the ten day days leading up to new year's day. up and down the california coast this morning, a high surf warning remains in effect and in some cases it means some
